James Anderson's 650th Test wicket hands New Zealand an early setback

Lunch New Zealand 553 and 27 for 1 (Conway 17*, Young 6*, Anderson 1-13) lead England 539 (Root 176, Foakes 56, Boult 5-106) by 41 runs

James Anderson claimed his 650th Test wicket to hand New Zealand an early setback in their second innings of the second Test against England.
After Trent Boult's five-wicket haul had managed to preserve the visitors' first-innings lead - albeit worth just 14 runs by the time England were bowled out - Anderson struck with his fifth ball to remove opener Tom Latham, who inexplicably shouldered arms to one which clattered into the top of middle stump with just four runs on the board.

New Zealand managed to navigate their way to lunch without further loss, with Devon Conway unbeaten on 17 and Will Young not out on 6.

Earlier, Joe Root and Ben Foakes picked up from where they had left off on the third evening to help England close the gap considerably, having resumed the day 80 runs in arrears.

But the hosts lost their last five wickets for 66 runs in 14.2 overs on the fourth morning at Trent Bridge, Boult claiming 5 for 106 from 33.3 overs as they were bowled out for 539 in reply to New Zealand's 553.

England had begun briskly, Tim Southee conceding back-to-back fours through the off side to Foakes, who was 24 not out overnight, before Root's brazen reverse scoop over the fence at third man - all in the first over of the day.

After five overs, England had scored seven boundaries, including Foakes' fifth of the morning to bring up his half-century with a punch through cover off Southee, who went for 33 runs in his first three overs.

Shortly after that though, Southee held on to a leading edge stooping low to his left at cover to remove Root, who - after ending the third day unbeaten on 163 - mistimed his drive at a Boult slower ball and fell for 176 inside the first half hour.

Stuart Broad was out to a brilliant catch by Daryl Mitchell, who had put down two far simpler chances at first slip on the second evening. This time, Mitchell leapt high to his right to pluck an outside edge off Michael Bracewell out of the air after it had sailed past him.

Foakes fell for 56, run-out by Matthew Potts, who turned a Bracewell delivery beyond short leg and called him through for a single but hesitated a couple of steps down and sent him back too late as Latham threw the ball back to Bracewell, who removed the bails.

Boult sealed his five-for bowling Potts with an excellent inswinging yorker that pegged back leg stump, and Bracewell had his third when he had Anderson caught behind for 9 to end with 3 for 62.
