Dolphins top Jets and ex-coach Gase, get 1st win

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. -- It's not quite a pop-the-champagne moment, but the Miami Dolphins are winless no more.
The Ryan Fitzpatrick-led Dolphins ended their 10-game losing streak with a 26-18 victory over the New York Jets on Sunday. There was an extra satisfaction in winning Sunday because they beat former head coach Adam Gase and the AFC East-rival Jets.
Dolphins second-year linebacker Jerome Baker sent a tweet three hours before their game calling his shot: "Today is the day," he wrote.
Baker was right. Following weeks of emotional postgame locker room interactions after embarrassing blowout losses and head-shaking close defeats, Dolphins players and coaches finally had joy.
"I woke up and it was on my heart. We had a great week of practice. I just felt like it was going to happen. I had to let the world know. We were tired of losing," Baker said after the game.
Dolphins coach Brian Flores was doused with a postgame Gatorade bath, a dozen players surrounded him with congratulations, and owner Stephen Ross gave him a hug as the two headed into the locker room with wide smiles. Ross was also seen giving a fist pump to a pending Dolphins victory by the CBS broadcast.
Flores got the game ball from Ross after the victory.
"A lot about coaching is building relationships and having fun out there, so those moments mean a lot more. I wasn't expecting any kind of bath," Flores said. "It was a fun moment for them, fun moment for me. It was something I'll never forget."
Flores said he immediately thought of his mother as he was walking off the field. His mom, Maria, died in March due to cancer. Flores dedicated his first NFL victory to her.
"She's been my good-luck charm for a long time," Flores said. "This is the first season of football I've had without her. She's the person that came to mind. This one is for her. It was a lot of fun. It was a great moment."
Players were ecstatic in the locker room. Fitzpatrick gave a group hug to his offensive linemen and then proceeded to his locker where two of his sons were hanging all over him laughing and pumped that their dad got a victory.
"I had a lot of pressure on me today because my two boys were here, and when we win I bring my boys in the locker room. I was tired of the puppy-dog eyes when I was walking off the field with them not being able to come into the locker room. So we were going to get them in the dang locker room today," Fitzpatrick said. "I know we didn't win the Super Bowl, but I know the things that we've gone through already this season and trying to deal with it with a smile on your face and remaining positive. To have my two boys sitting here watching this, those are lessons that are hard to teach in other aspects outside of sports. That's part of the reason you still play and part of the reason it's such a special win for us."
Fitzpatrick has been the leader of a resurgent Dolphins team that has turned its performance around over the past few weeks.
"To do it with these guys, the things that we've had to fight through and all the negativity that is surrounding from the outside looking in, the way that guys have decided to be positive, decided to practice well, decided to come to work every single day and work hard, that's what makes this one so special," Fitzpatrick said. "It's nice when something like that pays off and you can see the fruits of your labor."
For the 1-7 Dolphins, it's just a small taste of victory in an otherwise painful 2019 season. For the 1-7 Jets, it's another embarrassing showing in what has become a rapidly snowballing disastrous season.
"We're 1-7. Everybody... you feel like crap. You don't put in all this time and effort to come out here and lose. We've got to get things fixed. That's what they know," Gase said.
Asked if the loss was embarrassing, Gase said, "It's the NFL. You can't be embarrassed by this s---."
Jets safety Jamal Adams, asked if the Jets still believe in Gase, said: "Right now, Adam is our coach. I'm pretty sure he's going to continue to be the coach, so we have faith in him. That's not going to change. Whoever is in the building, that's who we're riding with, so I got his back. That's just how it is."
Fitzpatrick had a revenge-game-type performance against one of his former teams. He went 24-of-36 for 288 yards, three touchdowns, zero interceptions and a 118.8 passer rating.
Rookie receiver Preston Williams and second-year tight end Mike Gesicki had the best games of their young NFL careers in the Dolphins' first victory. Williams had five catches for 72 yards and two touchdowns. Gesicki had a game-high 95 receiving yards on six catches. The Jets couldn't figure out how to stop either one of them.
Sam Darnold went 27-of-39 for 260 yards, one touchdown and an interception.
The Dolphins have been synonymous with tanking through the 2019 campaign, but there was plenty of expressive joy, not disappointment, as the clock hit zero with a victory.
For a franchise that has the only undefeated team in NFL history (1972 Dolphins), it has to be a relief that the Dolphins won't be historic for having a winless team as well.
The Dolphins hadn't won a game since the "Miami Miracle" against the Patriots in Week 14 of the 2018 season, nearly 11 months ago.
On the other end of the spectrum, some Dolphins fans may worry that the win may hurt their bid to land the No. 1 overall pick in the 2020 NFL draft. The 0-8 Cincinnati Bengals now are in position to land the top overall selection. The Dolphins' chances to obtain the top pick dropped from 66% to 52% with the win, according to ESPN's FPI. The Bengals and Dolphins face each other in Miami in Week 16.
But all that was forgotten for one Sunday. They'll worry about the draft-pick implications another day. On this Sunday, a win made those who work for the Dolphins very happy.

Pelicans' Ingram (head) cleared to face Brooklyn

New Orleans Pelicans forward Brandon Ingram was not listed on the injury report Sunday evening and will be cleared to play Monday night against the Brooklyn Nets.
Ingram left Saturday's game against the Oklahoma City Thunder with a head injury and did not play in the second half.
According to a team source, Ingram was evaluated for a concussion but was not diagnosed with one. The team monitored him on Sunday to see if he developed any symptoms and when he didn't, cleared him to play Monday.
In the loss to the Thunder, Ingram had just seven points in 13 minutes.
In his first five games, Ingram was averaging 26.8 points, 8.2 rebounds and 4.8 assists per game while shooting 51.0 percent from the field and 50.0 from deep while making at least two 3-pointers in every game.
Pelicans forward Derrick Favors could make his return on Monday. Favors has missed the last three games with right knee soreness.

CHICAGO -- One day after picking up the 2020 option on pitcher Jose Quintana, the Chicago Cubs have done the same with former All-Star first baseman Anthony Rizzo.
Rizzo will make $16.5 million next season, the first of two option years the Cubs hold on him.
Rizzo, 30, has been the heart and soul of the team since coming over from San Diego in a trade before the 2012 season. He has averaged 27 home runs and 90 RBIs during his time as a Cub. The popular lefty has stated on numerous occasions that he'd like to finish his career in Chicago. The team has an option on him in 2021 for $16.5 million, as well.
On Saturday, the Cubs picked up Quintana's $11.5 million option and declined pitcher Derek Holland's option for $7 million. Pitcher Yu Darvish and outfielder Jason Heyward also chose not to opt out of their long-term deals. The organization still has decisions to make on team options for pitchers David Phelps and Kendall Graveman. The team won't pick up injured reliever Brandon Morrow's option for 2020, but it hasn't made that move official yet.

Two-time Olympic 400m hurdler plans to go into coaching
British hurdler Jack Green has announced his retirement from competitive athletics and his plan to move into coaching.
The 28-year-old is a two-time Olympian, having competed in the 400m hurdles at the 2012 Games in London and in Rio four years later, also forming part of the 4x400m team to finish fourth in London.
He claimed world relay bronze in the UK capital in 2017 and claimed a medal of the same colour as part of the GB quartet at the European Championships in Amsterdam in 2016.
His hurdles PB of 48.60, set in 2012, puts him seventh on the UK all-time list.
Green has spoken openly about his mental health struggles during his career and in a 2016 interview he told AW how he considered retirement before achieving Rio Olympics qualification.
“For someone with mental health problems it’s tough giving your whole life to track and field. You have to find the balance,” he said then.
Announcing his retirement on social media on Sunday evening, Green said: “A new chapter begins. I have decided to retire from track and field. I had every intention of training towards a third Olympic Games but after taking some time out and learning more about myself I came to realise that I wasn’t willing to give myself to the sport and make the necessary sacrifices to be the best I could be on the track.
“I was not willing to lose myself or anything else in the hunt for Olympic success. There’s a damn sight more to life than running around and after nearly 10 years at the elite level I’m more than happy to move forward with the next part of my story.
“I finish my athletics career having represented my country at every major championships possible, including two Olympics. This was something I dreamt of as an eight-year-old. I would write stories in English about beating Maurice Greene in the 100m and taking home gold. I didn’t quite get the gold but I did achieve my dream!
“Fourth at the Olympics, bronze medals from the Worlds and Europeans and a fourth at the Commonwealths. Not too bad an innings!”
Giving thanks to his mum, nan, coach and others to have supported him, he added: “I will not be leaving the sport completely as I plan to step into the world of coaching, something I thoroughly enjoy and can hopefully help some athletes achieve their own dreams.
“I will still be sharing my story about my mental health struggles and being an elite athlete. I’ve been lucky to speak for some of the top businesses and organisations in the world. So, feel free to get in touch if you think I could help you or your team!”
Navid Shams and Charlotte Lutz justify seeding, win in Nitra

Fresh from the ITTF World Cadet Challenge in the Polish town of Wladysawowo, Navid Shams secured the cadet boys’ singles title at the hands of Frenchman Célian Besnier (12-14, 11-7, 11-8, 12-10), after in his opening round contest having experienced somewhat of a fright; he was extended the full five games distance by Gabrielius Camara of the Netherlands (10-12, 11-3, 11-5, 7-11, 11-7).
A hard earned success, Navid Shams beat Poland’s Dawid Michna (11-8, 10-12, 11-8, 11-3), followed by success in opposition to Flavio Mourier (11-3, 11-6, 11-3), like Célian Besnier from France, to reserve his place in the final.
Success and thus three titles secured in the week. In Wladysawowo Navid Shams had not enjoyed the best of fortunes in the boys’ singles event but alongside Japan’s Sora Matsushima, Korea Republic’s Jang Seongil and India’s Payas Jain had been a member of the successful Asian outfit that won the boys’ team title. On Thursday 31st October, the concluding day of play, he partnered Sora Matsushima to boys’ doubles gold.
Célian Besnier again the runner up
In the opposite half of the draw, Célian Besnier had beaten Slovakia’s Samuel Palusek (11-13, 11-7, 11-8, 11-5), followed by success in opposition to Germany’s Manuel Prohaska (11-8, 11-7, 7-11, 11-7), Kristian Uherik, also from Slovakia (11-8, 15-13, 15-13) and Poland’s Michal Gawlas (14-12, 10-12, 11-6, 11-6) to reserve his place in the final.
Runners up spot for Célian Besnier, it was the same in the cadet boys’ doubles event when partnering colleague Milhane Jellouli, the player with whom the previous day he had secured the cadet boys’ team title.
After recording a semi-final success against Michal Gawlas and compatriot Milosz Sawczak (11-8, 9-11, 11-7, 11-9), the duo experienced defeat at the hands of colleagues Flavien Coton and Nathan Lam (7-11, 11-8, 11-9, 11-8). The title secured but the champions almost came to grief in the penultimate round; they trailed the host nation’s Samuel Arpas and Samuel Palusek by two games to nil, before emerging successful (9-11, 8-11, 11-7, 11-7, 11-8).
Stepping higher
More gold for Nathan Shams, for Charlotte Lutz is was one and two steps higher. Earlier in the week she had been a bronze medallist in the junior girls’ singles event, losing at the semi-final stage to England’s Charlotte Bardsley, the champion elect (10-12, 11-9, 6-11, 11-9, 13-11, 11-7). The previous day it had been junior girls’ team silver in partnership with Marie Chapet and Sofia Ray, an event in which she lost just one match. Notably the only defeat was against the Czech Republic in the group phase; she lost to Kristyna Pankavova by the narrowest of margins (11-8, 10-12, 11-9, 5-11, 11-9).
Joining forces with Clea de Stoppeleire, the partnership accounted for Slovakia’s Ema Cincurova and Laura Vinczeova (11-4, 6-11, 13-11, 11-8), prior to securing the title at the final expense of Luxembourg’s Enisa Sadikovic and Melisa Sadikovic (11-4, 11-5, 11-2). In the adjacent half of the draw Enisa Sadikovic and Melisa Sadikovic had beaten Germany’s Mia Griesel and the host nation’s Dominika Wiltschova (11-7, 8-11, 14-12, 11-4).
Confident, Charlotte Lutz secured the cadet girls’ singles title overcoming Russia’s Anastasiia Ivanova in the final (6-11, 11-9, 11-8, 11-3), having earlier ousted Slovakia’s Laura Vinczeova in what proved her most severe test of the day, she needed five games to claim victory (12-10, 6-11, 7-11, 11-1, 11-7). A testing hurdle negotiated, she followed by recording wins against Mia Griesel (11-5, 11-6, 11-8) and colleague Crystal Chan (11-6, 12-10, 11-8).
In the opposite half of the draw Anastasiia Ivanova had beaten Italy’s Miriam Carnovale (11-8, 11-3, 11-5), Germany’s Jele Stortz (11-7, 9-11, 11-6, 11-4) and Dominika Wiltschova (11-4, 9-11, 11-8, 11-6).
Next stop
Play concluded in Nitra, the next stop on the ITTF World Junior Circuit is Szombathely, the 2019 Hungarian Junior and Cadet Open, an ITTF Junior Circuit Premium level tournament, commences on Wednesday 6th November.

CLAREMONT, N.H. – Mike Parks and MDP Motorsports Promotions have entered into an agreement to lease New Hampshire’s Claremont Motorsports Park beginning next season.
Starting in April of 2020, Parks and his team will have complete control of all motor sports operations at the track.
The historic New Hampshire facility was purchased last winter by Ben Bosowski and Norman Wrenn. The duo ran the track this year with the help of General Manager Phil Hayes, but the duo have made the decision to go another direction in 2020.
Parks, the founder and owner of the Granite State Pro Stock Series, along with Wrenn and Bosowski, have reached an agreement that will allow the two southern New Hampshire race track owners to concentrate on their other tracks and allow Parks to live out a life long dream.
“I have to thank Norm and Ben for giving us this opportunity,” said Parks. “We have held several one off events over the last couple of years and this is the next step in the progression.
“This is my home track,” continued the resident of Walpole, N.H. “To have the opportunity to actually run the place is a dream come true.”
For 2020 there will be a combination of old and new on several fronts. The track will continue to be a Friday night track, racing under the NHSTRA and NASCAR banners featuring the sportsman modified division racing bi-weekly.
Alternating with the modifieds will be the mini stocks as they return as a points paying division for 2020. Also returning will be the late model sportsman, six shooters, pure stocks and what has become the most popular division in the region, the street stocks.
“We will be backing up the start time to 7:30 p.m. with a goal of having people out by 10:30,” Parks said. “We want to run an efficient, fast paced program that fans look forward to watching week in and week out.
“We have started to assemble a staff that will have some old and some new faces. There are still some holes to be filled but the key positions are filled and we are excited about the team we are assembling.”
For 2020, the speedway will host several of the regions top racing series. The Granite State Pro Stock Series will open the the facility on Saturday, April 25, with the track kicking off its Friday night schedule on May 1.
“The GSPSS opening both the track’s season and the series season has become a tradition.” stated Parks. “We look forward to kicking off both seasons with a bang.
“We are in talks with numerous other groups about the possibilities for next season. We will also be participating in the NHSTRA battle for the belt series for all divisions involved.”
Also in discussion for 2020 are the memorial races that have become a staple of the Claremont Motorsports Park schedule. These races memorialize people from the tracks past and provide for unique events for the competitors. Parks said a full schedule is expected in the near future.
“We are really close to having it ready for release,” Parks said. “We have a few I’s to dot and T’s to cross but it is close and will be released in the not to distant future.”
The property not only contains the popular third-mile oval, but also a go-kart track, mud bog pit and sand drag track. All of these venues will be under the control of Parks and his team and announcements will be made about their operation in the weeks and months to come.
Todd rolls in Bermuda for first Tour win in five years

After five tough years, Brendon Todd has returned to the winner’s circle on the PGA Tour. Here’s how it all unfolded Sunday at Port Royal as Todd won the Bermuda Championship:
Leaderboard: Brendon Todd (-24), Harry Higgs (-20), Scottie Scheffler (-18), Hank Lebioda (-18), Brian Gay (-18), Aaron Wise (-18), Fabian Gomez (-17)
What it means: It had been five years since Todd won the 2014 Byron Nelson for his first win on Tour. Later that season, he cracked the top 50 in the world rankings. But by the end of 2016, Todd had lost his card and his swing. He missed 37 of 41 cuts from 2016-18 and fell outside the top 2,000 in the world. “I was beat up,” Todd said earlier this year. “Hitting a 4-iron like 50 yards right, out of play, every round, and I did that for like two years.” Even after regaining his card via the Korn Ferry Tour Finals this year, Todd missed each of his first four cuts of the fall before tying for 28th in Houston. Less than a month later, the 34-year-old Georgia product again has job security after flirting with 59 and instead carding a final-round, 9-under 62 to win by four shots.
Round of the day: Two days after matching his career best round on Tour with a second-round 63, Todd set a new mark Sunday. He birdied Nos. 2-8 to post a 7-under 29 on the front nine, and he then followed with back-to-back birdies, at Nos. 10 and 11. Though the bid at 59 fell short and he capped the day with a bogey at the par-4 18th, Todd still ended the week with just three total bogeys.
Best of the rest: Wise posted his first top-30 since May, a T-3, despite capping his final-round 65 with a three-putt par at No. 17 and short birdie miss at the last. ... After not recording a top-10 in last season's rookie campaign, Lebioda closed in 63 and also shared third. ... Scheffler birdied three of his final four holes to shoot 66 and join Wise, Lebioda and Brian Gay at 18 under.
Shot of the day: Todd moved to 9 under through 11 holes after nearly holing this approach shot.
Quote of the day: "A year ago I wasn't sure if I was going to keep playing, so it's really special to get this win this soon. ... I'm just overcome with emotion right now." – Todd

Bayern Munich have sacked Niko Kovac as manager after Saturday's embarrassing 5-1 defeat at Eintracht Frankfurt, the club announced on Sunday.
"The performance of our team in recent weeks and the results have shown us that there was need for action. [Bayern club president] Uli Hoeness, [sporting director] Hasan Salihamidzic and I had an open and serious conversation with Niko on this basis on Sunday with the consensual result that Niko is no longer coach of FC Bayern," Bayern CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said in a club statement.

Defeat by Eintracht was Bayern's second of the season, but they have also drawn three and are in fourth place in the league standings.
"We all regret this development. I would like to thank Niko Kovac on behalf of FC Bayern for his work, especially for winning the doubles this past season," added Rummenigge.
Assistant coach Hans Flick will take charge of Bayern's Champions League clash with Olympiakos on Wednesday and for next Saturday's key clash with Borussia Dortmund.
Kovac, who took over at Bayern in 2018 after a spell in charge of Eintracht Frankfurt, said it was the "right decision".
"The results, and also the way we last played, made me come to that decision," he said.
"During this time, our team has won the championship, the DFB Cup and the Supercup. It was a good time. I wish the club and the team all the best."
