MRI shows mild ankle sprain for Dodgers' Turner

Published in Baseball
Thursday, 12 September 2019 16:14

MRI results on Los Angeles Dodgers third baseman Justin Turner's left ankle revealed a mild sprain, the team announced Thursday.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said he hasn't ruled Turner out of this weekend's series against the wild card-contending New York Mets, but his status won't be decided until closer to game time.

"Right now, with where we're at, to push it doesn't make a whole lot of sense,'' Roberts said.

The 31-year-old Turner sat out the series finale against the San Francisco Giants on Sunday night due to what was termed as ankle soreness, then remained out of the lineup through Thursday vs. the Orioles.

Turner is hitting .291 with 27 homers, 67 RBIs and a .370 on-base percentage in 131 games.

Knee surgery to end season for Angels' Ohtani

Published in Baseball
Thursday, 12 September 2019 14:59

Los Angeles Angels star Shohei Ohtani will have season-ending knee surgery Friday but is expected to recover in time for 2020 spring training.

The Angels announced Thursday that the surgery will "address a bipartite patella" in Ohtani's left knee.

The operation carries an expected recovery of 8-12 weeks, according to the Angels.

Ohtani, 25, had Tommy John surgery on his pitching elbow last October and did not pitch or play in the field this season.

Serving exclusively as a designated hitter or pinch hitter, Ohtani batted .286 with 18 home runs and 62 RBIs in 106 games this season.

Yankees' Encarnacion, Happ sent home for tests

Published in Baseball
Thursday, 12 September 2019 14:43

DETROIT -- Yankees slugger Edwin Encarnacion and pitcher J.A. Happ have both been sent back to New York for further testing after Thursday's first game of a doubleheader against the Tigers.

Encarnacion, who had hit his 34th home run in the third inning of a 10-4 victory against the Tigers in Game 1, left the game with a strained left oblique in the seventh inning. The 36-year-old designated hitter missed nearly a month of action with a fractured right wrist earlier this season.

"He felt it, I guess, in his first at-bat and, obviously, homered in his second at-bat," Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. "My understanding is [that] he was fine swinging; he was just getting it a little when he was coughing or whatever.

"Again, we hope it's minor and we got ahead of it, but we won't know until we get him checked out, obviously. Edwin even took his third at-bat and said he wasn't feeling anything swinging. Hopefully we're ahead of it, but we'll see."

For the Yankees -- who have set a major league record by sending 30 players to the IL this season -- losing Encarnacion would be another blow heading down the stretch after likely having lost outfielders Mike Tauchman and Aaron Hicks for the season.

The status of Giancarlo Stanton's return also remains unclear, though Boone said he's expected to rejoin the team Tuesday for the next homestand, against the Los Angeles Angels.

Nonetheless, Boone remained optimistic that Encarnacion's injury is not severe, particularly because it wasn't affecting his power swing.

"His presence in our lineup is huge, so I don't want to start speculating when we don't know what it is and hope that it's minor," Boone said. "I think it goes without saying how big of a presence he is in the middle of our order."

In seven games since coming off the IL on Sept. 3, Encarnacion was hitting .281 with 3 home runs and 8 RBIs. He suffered a fractured wrist after being hit by a pitch by Boston Red Sox reliever Josh A. Smith on Aug. 3.

Happ, meanwhile, started the first game Thursday, taking a shutout into the fifth inning before giving up a two-run homer and a single. He was then removed by Boone.

Boone said after the game that Happ had been bothered by left biceps tendinitis for a few starts and it had been "planned ahead of time" to send him back to New York after Thursday's start.

"It's nothing that we're too concerned about," Boone said. "... We don't think it's significant. Obviously he's been throwing the ball really well, but it was just somewhere where we wanted to get him back there [for Dr. Christopher Ahmad] to see him."

Happ, who did not factor into Thursday's decision and is 12-8 with a 5.07 ERA and 130 strikeouts this season, said the discomfort has "been getting progressively to the point where we'll get it looked at."

"Hopefully we can figure something out, just to get some relief in between to make sure we're getting the work in [that] we need to," Happ said.

He said he wanted to pitch Thursday and that he "voiced my opinion" about it with Boone.

"Of course, I wanted to," Happ said. "Generally the organization, most organizations, take a cautious approach. I think after we all talked and I expressed exactly how I am feeling and the fact we've been through this before ... I definitely wanted to pitch."

Earlier Thursday, Boone said he expects Yankees pitcher Luis Severino to return to the starting rotation next week. Severino has yet to pitch this season while recovering from right rotator cuff inflammation and a lat strain.

It is officially clinching season across MLB as baseball's best teams vie to lock up division titles, and wild-card hopefuls look to earn a place in October. As the race to the finish heats up and magic numbers shrink, we've got you covered on everything you need to know about which teams have already punched their postseason tickets, who could be popping the champagne next and which races could come down to the very end of the regular season.

For more, including current playoff odds, check out our MLB standings page and get ready for October with our MLB playoff schedule.

Playoff matchups if the season ended today

American League

AL wild-card game: Oakland A's at Tampa Bay Rays

ALDS: Wild-card winner vs. New York Yankees; Minnesota Twins vs. Houston Astros

National League

NL wild-card game: Chicago Cubs/Milwaukee Brewers at Washington Nationals

NLDS: Wild-card winner vs. Los Angeles Dodgers; St. Louis Cardinals vs. Atlanta Braves

Who is already in

Los Angeles Dodgers

The Dodgers clinched the season's first postseason spot with a win against the Orioles on Tuesday night in Baltimore, earning their seventh consecutive NL West title.

Those seven straight division wins rank behind only the 1991-2005 Braves and 1998-2006 Yankees for most in the divisional era (since 1969). This time around, the Dodgers tied for the fourth-fewest games needed to clinch a division since 2000 and the earliest they have secured a division crown since their move to L.A.

What's next? The Dodgers have a three-game lead on Atlanta for the NL's top record and remain in a tight race with the Astros and Yankees for the best record in baseball -- and home-field advantage throughout the postseason.

Who could be next

New York Yankees, Houston Astros or Atlanta Braves

The American League's two top teams are next in line to clinch division titles with New York's AL East magic number currently at eight and Houston's also at eight in the AL West. In the NL, the Braves' magic number to win their second straight division crown sits at eight.

Michelle-Lee Ahye provisionally suspended

Published in Athletics

Commonwealth 100m champion has had a charge issued for ‘whereabouts failures’

Trinidadian sprinter Michelle-Lee Ahye has been provisionally suspended for ‘whereabouts failures’, the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) has announced.

World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) rules require athletes to submit their whereabouts for one hour every day, plus overnight accommodation and training information, in case they are needed for out-of-competition testing.

“The AIU confirms a Provisional Suspension against Trinidadian sprinter Michelle-Lee Ahye for a violation of the @iaaforg Anti-Doping Rules,” the Unit wrote on Twitter on Thursday, with the status of the case listed as ‘charge issued’.

Ahye won the Commonwealth 100m title on the Gold Coast in 2018 and also secured Pan American Games silver in Lima last month.

She formed part of Trinidad and Tobago’s bronze medal-winning 4x100m team at the 2015 IAAF World Championships in Beijing and is the national record-holder in the 100m and 200m with PBs of 10.82 and 22.25.

Ahye also placed sixth in the world 100m final in London two years ago.

Clijsters, 36, to make comeback in 2020

Published in Tennis
Thursday, 12 September 2019 06:20

Kim Clijsters is to make her tennis comeback at the age of 36 with a return to the WTA Tour in 2020.

The Belgian former world number one initially retired in 2007 to start a family, two years after winning her first Grand Slam at the US Open.

She returned in 2009 and won two more US Open titles and the Australian Open before her second retirement in 2012.

"I don't really feel like I want to prove something. I think for me it's the challenge," Clijsters said.

Speaking to the WTA Insider Podcast, she added: "The love for the sport is obviously still there. But the question still is, am I capable of bringing it to a level where I would like it to be at and where I want it to be at before I want to play at a high level of one of the best women's sports in the world?

"I want to challenge myself and I want to be strong again. This is my marathon."

Clijsters is targeting a return in January, but says she will remain flexible in her scheduling.

As a former world number one, Clijsters is eligible for unlimited wildcards at WTA tournaments. She will need to play three tournaments or earn 10 ranking points to re-establish a ranking.

She said not having to play a set number of tournaments a year has "made the choice a little bit easier".

"Kim Clijsters ranks among the greats of the game and her return to the Tour is exciting news for the WTA family and tennis fans around the world," said WTA chairman Steve Simon.

Clijsters won 41 WTA titles and spent 20 weeks as world number one in her two previous spells.

Her daughter Jada was born in 2008, followed by sons Jack in 2013 and Blake in 2016.

Following her second retirement she ran her tennis academy and worked as a commentator, including for the BBC at Wimbledon.

She says she had been contemplating a comeback for two years.

"Even if I don't make it, this whole process has been so worth it for me to get back into a good routine," she said.

"Let's see if I can get my body in shape to play tennis at a level where I would like it to be at, that I have in mind of where I would like to get to, and see if it's possible. To see, first of all, if my body is capable of even doing that."

She added: "We can talk about the start of 2020 and see where can we get a wildcard, but if I feel in December that I'm not even near to where I want to be, then I'm not going to go just for the sake of going somewhere. I want to feel like I'm getting to where I want to be.

"I still have three and a half months before and so I still think I can have a lot of improvement to go through in these next few months and that I look forward to seeing where that will lead me."

Al Unser Jr. Enters VIR Charity Pro-Am

Published in Racing
Thursday, 12 September 2019 06:15

SOUTHLAKE, Texas – Indy car champion Al Unser Jr. will compete in the Sportscar Vintage Racing Ass’n’s Vintage Race of Champions Charity Pro-Am presented by Chopard Watch at Virginia Int’l Raceway.

Unser, who has always run at the front in previous VROC Charity Pro-Am races, joins a stellar field of legendary drivers reminiscent of the original IROC series. Many in the VROC field competed in IROC, including Unser and Bobby Labonte, both of whom became champions of that iconic series. The Sept. 21 VROC Charity Pro-Am at VIR is the final event in the series and will decide the VROC B Production (BP) and A Production (AP) championships.

“I am delighted to race once again in the VROC. It’s great competition and I have nothing but respect the SVRA drivers,” Unser said. “I want to thank Mike Harding and George Steinbrenner for giving me the time off from their Indy car team to do what they know I love best – race cars. The VIR course is particularly challenging and I look forward to having another crack at it because I never got completely comfortable last year.”

“I consider Al a great friend to SVRA,” said SVRA CEO Tony Parella. “Since he won our first Pro-Am at Indy in 2014, he has been a big factor in building our VROC brand.”

Unser is a two-time Indy car champion (1990 and ’94) and the winner of 34 Indy car races, including the 1992 and ’94 Indianapolis 500s. His 1992 Indianapolis 500 victory remains the closest finish in history with a margin of just 43 ten-thousandths of a second over runner-up Scott Goodyear.

A versatile driver, he was a winner in World of Outlaws sprint car racing, 1982 Can-Am champion, and IROC champion in 1986 and again in 1988. He’s also a two-time overall winner of the Rolex 24 at Daytona in 1986 and ’87. Like his father Al Unser Sr. and Uncle Bobby Unser, he enjoyed tremendous success as a star driver for Roger Penske’s team, which provided his winning entry for the 1994 Indianapolis 500.

Unser is currently a strategist for the Harding-Steinbrenner Indy car team, which is competing at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca the same weekend.
