British and Irish Lions duo Josh Adams and Liam Williams return for Wales' Six Nations opener against France in Paris on Friday.

Wing Adams has not featured for Wales since the 2024 Six Nations, while full-back Williams' most recent international appearance was on last summer's tour of Australia.

With more than 150 caps combined, they bring a wealth of experience for what promises to be a stern test in Paris.

Dafydd Jenkins, Wales' captain in the 2024 Six Nations, is also back in the side at lock.

Williams was absent for last year's tournament as a result of his stint in Japanese rugby, but returns after rejoining Saracens in November.

Evan Lloyd and Henry Thomas are given their first Wales starts in the front row alongside Gareth Thomas, while lock Will Rowlands partners Jenkins in the second row.

Wales captain Jac Morgan starts at flanker with James Botham on the other side of the scrum while Aaron Wainwright has proved his fitness to start at number eight.

Taulupe Faletau misses out, with Wales head coach Warren Gatland saying he was not quite ready after suffering a knee injury earlier this month.

Ben Thomas is given the nod ahead of Dan Edwards at fly-half, with the latter set to win his first cap from the bench.

Tomos Williams will partner Thomas at half-back, while Owen Watkin and Nick Tompkins form an experienced midfield.

Tom Rogers and Adams are named on the wings, with Williams starting at full-back.

Cody Coughlin To Make Pro Stock Debut With KB Titan

Published in Racing
Wednesday, 29 January 2025 05:21

COLUMBUS, Ohio Cody Coughlin is shifting gears, literally.

The short-track racing veteran will follow in his familys footsteps and make his NHRA Pro Stock debut this season, driving for KB Titan Racing.

Pro Stock is something Ive always had interest in, said Coughlin, whose father, grandfather, uncles, and cousins have raced successfully in NHRA competition. My dad, John, raced Pro Stock Truck back in the 90s; and my uncles, Jeg and Troy, and my cousin T.J. have all raced in the class. Ive been around the country competing in other forms of motorsports for a long time, but Ive always found Pro Stock intriguing.

Im at a different stage of life now, and this is a good fit. Im looking forward to a great season with Greg Anderson and the whole KB Titan Racing team.

While his family was racking up NHRA wins and titles dad John is a multi-time division champion with five national event wins across three different categories Coughlin was winning races and championships in quarter midgets (five wins and two championships), followed by a very successful journey through the ASA Late Model Series. There, he pulled double duty in the ARCA/CRA Super Series sponsored by JEGS and the JEGS/CRA All Stars Tour presented by Chevrolet Performance, in which he was crowned the Howie Lettow Rookie of the year in 2011.

The 2013 season came with a multitude of accomplishments, including two wins and two Fast Qualifier awards to solidify the first of what would eventually be four JEGS/CRA All Stars Tour championships (2013, 2016, 2020, and 2021). In 2016, Coughlin won the ARCA/CRA Super Late Model championship along with the JEGS/CRA All Stars Tour title, making him the first driver to secure both series titles in the same year.

Overall, Coughlin has secured 20 late model wins in national series, and his experience includes a stretch racing full time in the NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series.
Coughlins interest in straight-line, quarter-mile racing was encouraged by six-time and reigning world champion Anderson, the most winning driver in the history of the Pro Stock category and a willing ambassador for the class that the veteran wants to see continue to grow.

I have a lot of respect for all of the people in the class that have done really well, including my family. I was congratulating Greg on his championship last year, and just in talking, I realized we had a good camaraderie. We get along, said Coughlin. I wanted to give the sport a try, and KB Titan Racing has a really great program that led to some fruitful discussions. We went to the track, and everyone meshed well. Its a good fit.

At a mid-January test session in Bradenton, Fla., Coughlin earned his Pro Stock license in a KB Titan Racing Jerry Haas-built Chevrolet Camaro, and shortly thereafter, he committed to a full season with the 10-time championship winning team.

For his first full pull, initial primary sponsorship will come via the high-end residential real estate business that he built from the ground up, Cody Coughlin Company, and the divisions that fall beneath its umbrella.

Ive been around the sport a lot in my life, so to some degree I was comfortable getting into the car, he said. But going through the motions was different than anything Ive experienced before. I think the biggest thing was how hard the car launches off the line. Ive driven a lot of fast cars in my life, but from the acceleration standpoint, it superseded anything else by a lot. After the first time, I understood the way it should feel. Im still learning, but Greg, Dallas Glenn, and Dave Connolly gave me a lot of great driving tips, and that helped me jump as much of the learning curve as possible.

The team is scheduled for a test session following the SCAG Power Equipment PRO Superstar Shootout, which will take place Feb. 6-8, at Bradenton Motorsports Park. Coughlin will make his Pro Stock debut at the Amalie Motor Oil NHRA Gatornationals, March 6-9.

Im looking forward to getting a few more laps under my belt, said the Columbus, Ohio, native. Now that Ive got the basics down, we can switch things up a little bit and really focus on every aspect of driving a Pro Stock car. I grew up seeing so many Wally trophies in the homes of my family members, and it would really be something special to get one of my own. Im most excited about being competitive enough to do that, and it would be a proud moment and really an honor to have a Wally on the mantle by the end of the year.

Short of that, Im excited to travel and see some of the tracks Ive heard about my whole life but never been to. This is about starting a new chapter after closing the book on circle track racing. Im really focused on my business, and drag racing is an exciting venture where I can get my competitive spirit out. I see this as the beginning of a new chapter in my racing career.

New Regular Season Title Part of $25 Million NHRA Payout

Wednesday, 29 January 2025 07:00

INDIANAPOLIS Ahead of the NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series season, NHRA officials announced Wednesday that $25 million in purse and payouts will be awarded to teams during the 20-race national event schedule.

The multi-million dollar payout includes the event purse for drivers in the Mission Foods and Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series on the national event tour, as well as the year-end championship purse for the Mission Foods Drag Racing Series, payouts for the All-Star Callout races in Top Fuel, Funny Car, Pro Stock and Pro Stock Motorcycle, the Mission #2Fast2Tasty Challenge in the four professional categories and other incentive programs.

It also includes the payout for a regular season championship, which will be introduced this year and will be awarded to the regular season points leader in the NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series. NHRA is set to award almost $400,000 of additional purse to the regular season champions in Top Fuel, Funny Car, Pro Stock and Pro Stock Motorcycle, contributing to the $25 million up for grabs this year during the highly-anticipated 2025 season.

It is always our goal to incentivize our amazing racers at all levels and weve been intently focused on introducing new ways to reward our drivers and race teams. Were excited to award $25 million to these incredible teams and competitors who race at such a high level and put on a tremendous show for our fans across the country, NHRA President Glen Cromwell said. We are thrilled to introduce programs like a regular season championship across our four professional categories, which provides added excitement to the regular season and the worlds biggest drag race, the Cornwell Quality Tools U.S. Nationals.

From our specialty races and bonus programs to our battle for regular season and world championships, we are looking forward to a spectacular 2025 season.

The NHRA season opens March 6-9 with the 56th annual Amalie Motor Oil NHRA Gatornationals at legendary Gainesville (Fla.) Raceway, the first of 14 races during the regular season. The points reset for the championship competitors during the last six races of the year, with the Countdown to the Championship playoffs determining the overall world champion across the NHRAs four professional categories.

In 2024, Antron Brown (Top Fuel), Austin Prock (Funny Car), Greg Anderson (Pro Stock) and Gaige Herrera (Pro Stock Motorcycle) claimed world championships in the Mission Foods Drag Racing Series. Brown won his fourth title in the loaded category, while Prock picked up his first championship in dominant style. Greg Anderson won his sixth world title in Pro Stock in a winner-take-all final round and Herrera rolled to his second straight title.

Doug Kalitta (Top Fuel), Prock, Dallas Glenn (Pro Stock) and Herrera were the points leaders at the conclusion of the regular season.

Amorim: Utd spell most intense, but most special

Published in Soccer
Wednesday, 29 January 2025 06:29

Ruben Amorim has admitted his first few months at Manchester United have been the most intense of his career but also "the most special."

The Portuguese manager took over at United in November after Erik ten Hag was sacked with the team 14th in the Premier League.

Amorim suffered six defeats in his first 11 league games at United, the worst start from anyone in charge at Old Trafford since 1932.

Asked if the last few months at United had been the most intense of his career, Amorim, who had guided Sporting to two league titles in four years, told TNT Brasil: "Yes but also the most special ones.

"The two sides of one coin. I knew it, I knew that it would be an exciting adventure. I knew it was going to be very difficult because everyone knew the calendar that we had and the lack of time [we had to prepare].

"We also had the notion of the challenges that we would find and obviously, with a few defeats everything becomes a little more complicated."

After their last defeat, 3-1 at home to Brighton & Hove Albion on Jan. 19., an alarmed Amorim called the team "the worst, maybe, in the history of Manchester United."

Amorim would later regret making that comment. United have won their last two games since Amorim's outburst and are 12th in the Premier League.

"There's no point in looking at the [Premier League] standings right now because we are not top or in the top positions," Amorim said. "We need to be aware of the context. I don't look at the standings, I look at what the team is doing, what we have to improve on.

"The important thing is that we have a clear idea and a clear path of what we want to do. Even in challenging times we are not lost.

"Perhaps we are more frustrated and angry but we know where to go.

"To feel the support of the fans despite the bad results is a sign that we are doing something well."

Amorim made headlines earlier this week when he blasted out-of-favour Marcus Rashford for not giving his best.

Rashford was left out of the team for the 11th successive game by Amorim during United's 1-0 Premier League win at Fulham on Sunday.

"I will put [63-year-old goalkeeper coach Jorge] Vital on before I put a player that doesn't give the maximum every day", he said of the England forward.

Asked if that was a message not just to Rashford but to all of his players, Amorim told TNT Brasil: "I don't want to send messages to anyone.

"I'm demanding when it comes to certain things ... I think in order for a group to win games and win titles you have to follow a criteria and if that criteria wasn't there, everything would be subjective. There are certain things that have to be very clear with the players."

Amorim, meanwhile, explained the reasons behind Casemiro's lack of playing time under him.

The veteran Brazil midfielder, who is in his third season at United, last played on Dec. 30.

"We realised that Casemiro nowadays has other things [to offer], such as intelligence, his understanding of the game," Amorim said of the former Real Madrid star.

"But we are in a domestic and European league where the difference in intensity and physical demand is great and hence, I feel that this team needs high intensity players that at times we don't have.

"We all know Casemiro's quality, what he has won. It's simply a selection [issue]."

Javier Tebas fighting to keep Olmo unregistered

Published in Soccer
Wednesday, 29 January 2025 06:29

LaLiga president Javier Tebas has said the league is still fighting to have Barcelona forward Dani Olmo unregistered for the second half of the season.

Olmo was unregistered by LaLiga and the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) on Jan. 1 after Barça failed to prove their were compliant with the league's financial fair play rules (FFP) in time for a Dec. 31 deadline.

However, Spain's sports ministry (CSD) reinstated Olmo's registration -- as well as forward Pau Víctor's -- a week later as they agreed to analyse an appeal from Barça.

"We are against the registration and are taking the necessary action with the relevant bodies, requesting that he is unregistered," Tebas said on Tuesday.

The CSD ruling sparked outrage among other LaLiga clubs, with Atlético Madrid, Espanyol and Valencia among several teams to release statements criticising the decision.

"They are right," Tebas added of the reaction from other clubs. "If we, as LaLiga, are taking the action we are taking, it's because we feel that the decision that has been made is not in accordance with the regulations."

Olmo has featured three times for Barça since the CSD's ruling, in the Supercopa win over Real Madrid, the Copa del Rey victory against Real Betis and LaLiga draw with Getafe.

However, he has missed the last two games injured, while Pau Víctor has played just 39 minutes of football in total since the decision, coming off the bench against Betis and again in Sunday's 7-1 win over Valencia.

It had been suggested that teams could report Barça for fielding an ineligible lineup in games in which Olmo and/or Víctor have featured, but Tebas says that is not possible.

"Per the regulations, when a player is registered and has a licence, as Dani Olmo does at the moment, for example, there is no room to challenge the result of a match he's involved in," he clarified.

"Even if we are later proven to be right, that's the case."

Olmo joined Barça from RB Leipzig for 60 million ($62.4m) last summer, while Víctor signed on a permanent deal from Girona after impressing with Barça's reserve team last season.

The duo were initially registered temporarily until Dec. 31 via a rule which allows clubs to allocate up to 80% of the salary due to an injured player -- in this case Andreas Christensen -- on replacements.

Olmo and Víctor were then unregistered by LaLiga on Jan. 1 after Barça missed the deadline to prove they were compliant with the league's FFP rules.

LaLiga eventually confirmed Barça had shown they were able to fulfil certain FFP requirements on Jan. 3 and, therefore, had had their "spending cap extended."

However, in a joint statement with the RFEF, LaLiga added that players who have had their registrations cancelled cannot be re-registered with a club for a second time in the same season.

Barça appealed that decision to the CSD, arguing against the interpretation of the rule, and submitted a 52-page report with their reasoning.

The CSD agreed Barça may have a case, resulting in the temporary re-registration of Olmo and Víctor, but a final ruling from the CSD could take as long as three months.

English refs in Spain? RFEF chief on Pérez desire

Published in Soccer
Wednesday, 29 January 2025 06:29

Spanish football federation [RFEF] president Rafael Louzán has claimed Florentino Pérez told him he'd like to bring English referees to Spain, to improve the quality of LaLiga's refereeing.

Real Madrid president Pérez has frequently criticised the quality of Spanish officials, saying in 2023 that "urgent" reforms were necessary, while the club's TV channel, Real Madrid TV, has regularly highlighted refereeing errors before and after games.

In an interview for the podcast 'El Cafelito' with journalist Josep Pedrerol, Louzán -- who was elected as RFEF president last month for a four-year term -- said Pérez had repeatedly raised the subject in conversations with him.

"My relationship [with Florentino] is good," Louzán said. "But what happens with Florentino is that he says, in strong terms, that he feels aggrieved by referees.

"I said to him, 'I've just arrived. Let's try to get along.' But he's persistent on the subject. He reminds me from time to time, he says, 'sort out the Negreira case.' And I say, it's before the courts."

Responsibility for refereeing in Spain lies with the Technical Committee of Referees, which is regulated by the RFEF, while a designating committee -- which includes both RFEF and LaLiga representation -- assigns officials for specific matches.

"Florentino said to me once that he would bring English referees to referee," Louzán said.

"And I said, 'let's see how we do that!' ... It's not just now, he's said to me various times. In Saudi Arabia a year ago [at the Spanish Supercopa], he said to me, 'you have to sort out the referees issue, because they're damaging us, and we've lost a lot of trophies because of referees.' But I [Louzán] believe in the work of referees."

Speaking to Real Madrid's AGM in 2023, Pérez called for the Spanish Government to intervene on the issue of refereeing.

"It's essential for the wellbeing of Spanish football that things like the quality of refereeing and the use of VAR are dealt with," Pérez said.

"I believe the Spanish Government will take steps to improve refereeing bodies in this country. This is urgent, more urgent than ever. The credibility of our competition has been damaged."

Louzán was elected as RFEF president on Dec. 16, having previously represented the Galician Football Federation.

He was allowed to take part in the election despite being subject to a seven-year ban on holding public office -- handed out by a provincial court for misconduct -- which he has appealed to Spain's supreme court.

Slot looking to boost Liverpool squad in summer

Published in Soccer
Wednesday, 29 January 2025 06:29

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot has said the club are already working on strengthening in the summer transfer window but insists he is happy with his squad.

Slot signed just two players after arriving at Anfield from Feyenoord Rotterdam last summer; forward Federico Chiesa and goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, who is spending this season on loan with La Liga side Valencia.

Despite the club's lack of transfer activity, Liverpool have excelled under Slot this season and are top of both the Premier League and Champions League tables.

Liverpool have yet to bring in any reinforcements in the January transfer window, however Slot has revealed it is likely to be a different story in the summer.

"Liverpool should always be competing for a league title, we should always be competing for the Champions League," he said in an interview for the BBC'S Football Focus. "I'm hoping I will be able to keep the club at that level.

"I know people sometimes question this because they haven't seen us doing a lot in the transfer market in the summer and now in the winter as well. There's a reason for that -- because we're happy with the squad.

"But I do know we're definitely working on strengthening in the summer."

Slot also heaped praise on captain Virgil van Dijk, who is out of contract at Liverpool in the summer, and admitted his team have defied even his own expectations with their success this season.

"Everybody here in England would tell you that Virgil van Dijk is the best defender in the world," he said. "In Holland, he got a bit more criticism than he gets over here in England. I was, in a very positive way, surprised how good he was on the ball and how he could play football through the lines.

"From the first day I was like 'wow, this is definitely another level than I'm used to.' But people in England were used to this."

Slot added: "You don't think after 20 games we will have that many points and I wasn't expecting us to be top with the margin we have.

"It's always nice to be up there, but nobody would have expected this. I'm the last person who would have expected [Manchester] City to have such a bad run."

Kuldeep Yadav has been named in Uttar Pradesh's (UP) squad for their Ranji Trophy match against Madhya Pradesh (MP) at the Holkar Cricket Stadium in Indore, starting on Thursday.

Kuldeep is making a return after a hernia surgery and hasn't played competitive cricket since October 2024. His last outing for India was the first Test against New Zealand in Bengaluru.

While both UP and MP are out of the knockouts race, the match will give Kuldeep valuable game time and an opportunity to test his fitness ahead of the three-match ODI series against England, which begins on February 6. Kuldeep is in the India squad for that series, and the provisional 15 for the Champions Trophy that follows.

On Monday, he had thanked the NCA staff on social media for their help in his recovery.

Apart from Kuldeep, several other India players, including Virat Kohli, KL Raul and Riyan Parag, will also be in action in the last league round of the Ranji Trophy.

Lillian Udeh, the 18-year-old fast bowler, was the star of the show as her 3 for 11 from four overs helped Nigeria defend a total of 94 for 7 and secure victory with six runs and eight balls to spare.
Having initially been behind in the game - Udeh was part of a poor top-order performance where four of five batters fell for single-digits - Nigeria turned things around with the ball and not a moment too soon either. Ireland were 40 for 2 in the eighth over, looking quite comfortable in the chase when Udeh triggered the collapse that defined the match. Four wickets for 14 runs later, they were barely holding on. Annointed Akhigbe, the 17-year-old seamer, also played an important part, striking twice in the 12th over where she got rid of Ireland's top-scorer Rebecca Lowe for 21 off 32. Another 4 for 14 collapse resulted in the team being bowled out for 88, and exiting the competition with just one win.
Nigeria built their eventually defendable total with opener Christabel Chukwuonye scoring 25 off 42 balls with three fours. The other end was leaking wickets though, and they required a lower-order intervention to last the 20 overs. Omosigho Eguakun (17 off 23), Peculiar Agboya (17 not out off 20) and captain Lucky Piety (12 off 11) added crucial runs from No. 6, 7 and 8 helping the team recover from 21 for 4 to finish on 94 for 7.

Sri Lanka hold on for consolation win

Sri Lanka successfully defended a paltry total of 99 against Australia in Bangi, to register their second win of the Super Six phase. Sri Lanka, opting to bat, made a sedate start as their openers Sanjana Kavindi (19 off 35) and Sumudu Nisansala (18 off 15) took their time to get going. Australia, having finished second on the Group 1 table behind India, will now face Group 2 table-toppers South Africa in the semi-final on January 31, while India are set to face England.

At 77 for 2 in the 14th over, Sri Lanka might have been looking for a late flourish, but Lily Bassingthwaighte, Hasrat Gill and Tegan Williamson all struck at regular intervals to initiate a collapse, as Sri Lanka lost their next six wickets for just 22 runs.

Australia lost three early wickets in the chase, but a handy 27 from Caoimhe Bray had the team well-placed at 64 for 3, and within sight of victory. However, Bray was dismissed in the 15th over courtesy Player of the Match Limansa Thilakarathna, offering Sri Lanka a way back into the game. Chamodi Praboda, Pramudi Methsara and Aseni Thalagune picked up two wickets apiece, as Australia completely lost their momentum. They lost their next four wickets for only 23 runs, finishing their innings at 87 for 8.

London derby to launch fifth season of Hundred in August

Published in Cricket
Wednesday, 29 January 2025 06:57

The fixtures for the fifth season of the Hundred have been announced by the ECB, with the tournament set to open with a double-header between London rivals London Spirit and Oval Invincibles at Lord's on August 5.

Invincibles, the defending men's champions, and Spirit, the defending women's champions, are also expected to be the most sought-after franchises in the Hundred equity sale, which gets underway on Thursday, when Invincibles and Birmingham Phoenix are the first teams to go under the hammer.
As reported by ESPNcricinfo, this year's tournament avoids a clash with Major League Cricket, the US-based tournament that will be entering its own third season in 2025. The Hundred final is set to take place on August 31, also at Lord's, with the Eliminator slated for The Oval on August 30.

For the first time this season, direct signings have been permitted in both the men's and women's competitions, with Laura Wolvaardt and Amelia Kerr the first to have been recruited in that fashion, as they join Southern Brave and Manchester Originals respectively.

Charlie Dean, who has been retained by London Spirit after her role in last year's title win, said: "August is fast becoming one of the best months of the summer. The Hundred has developed into an excellent competition, we play in front of fantastic crowds and even from the middle you get a sense of how the crowd is so full of families and young people.

"The cricket itself is high quality, the format is accessible and quick, and we're all really looking forward to getting back to it and hopefully defending our title."

Oval Invincibles' captain, Sam Billings, who is also seeking to defend the title, added: "It will be great to kick off The Hundred with a sold-out derby at Lord's. From our point of view, we're looking to start strongly as we have done the last couple of years to set the tone for another positive year. No doubt it will be a brilliant atmosphere at Lord's.

"It was another fantastic tournament last year, we've worked hard at the Invincibles to build a really strong core and there's no reason why we can't have another great year. The Kia Oval is undoubtedly one of the best places in world cricket to play, our home support is special. We all hope we can build on the last couple of years and keep the trophy in South London."

Season tickets for previous holders will be on sale from today, while an exclusive window for previous attendees will be open from March 4-18. Priority sales will be from April 1-15, before tickets go on general release from April 17.
