Mickelson skipping Scottish Open to prep for The Open

CROMWELL, Conn. – Throughout his Hall of Fame career, Phil Mickelson has made a conscious effort to play his way into form, usually scheduling a start the week before an upcoming major.
For years prior to the Open Championship, that would start would come at the Scottish Open, an event Mickelson won in 2013 the week before he claimed the claret jug at Muirfield.
But for the second time in three years, he won’t be in the field.
Mickelson said Wednesday at the Travelers Championship that he’s skipping this year’s Scottish Open. It’s part of the 49-year-old’s new scheduling strategy.
“I usually play the week or two before majors,” he said. “This year I'm not, and so I have a lot more energy, I'm a lot fresher.”
Mickelson will instead play the new 3M Championship in Minnesota and then head across the Atlantic to begin his prep for Royal Portrush.
After The Open, he’ll head to Memphis for the WGC-FedEx Championship for his final start of the regular season.

Juanfran wanted by Nashville, Corinthians and Sao Paulo - sources

Atletico Madrid right-back Juanfran is wanted by MLS expansion franchise Nashville SC as well as Brazilian teams Corinthians and Sao Paulo, sources have confirmed to ESPN FC.
Having spent the past eight seasons with Atletico, Juanfran will leave the La Liga club when his contract expires at the end of the month. The defender is keen for his next move to be away from Spain, where he has also played for Real Madrid, Espanyol and Osasuna.
Nashville has explored the possibility of signing the former Spain international ahead of its inaugural season in Major League Soccer in 2020. A move to the United States is a very serious option, but so is Brazil.
"It's true that Corinthians and Sao Paulo have sounded him out and they are both very interested in him," a source close to the player told ESPN FC.
Corinthians and Sao Paulo first made contact with Juanfran a while ago now and his agents have listened to what they've had to say. They like the sporting projects at both clubs, but nothing has been finalized yet.
Juanfran, 34, wants to continue his career "in a competitive championship," sources explained, somewhere where he can still test himself. A move elsewhere in Europe has been all but ruled out, though.
On holiday in the south of Spain with his family, Juanfran will begin to think about his next step in the coming days as he prepares to cut ties with Atleti.

Detectives investigating the death of Cardiff signing Emiliano Sala have arrested an individual on suspicion of manslaughter by an unlawful act, the Dorset (England) Police Department announced on Wednesday.
"We have carried out a wide-ranging investigation into the circumstances of the death of Mr. Sala and continue to work with partner agencies including the Civil Aviation Authority," Detective Inspector Simon Huxter said in a statement.
"As part of this investigation we have to consider whether there is any evidence of any suspected criminality and as a result of our enquiries we have today, Wednesday 19 June 2019, arrested a 64-year-old man from the North Yorkshire area on suspicion of manslaughter by an unlawful act. He is assisting with our enquiries and has been released from custody under investigation."
Huxter added: "As is standard practice, we will not be releasing any further information as to the identity of the individual who has been arrested unless that person is charged to appear in court."
The statement said police would provide no further details on the man's identity at this stage.
Dorset police are investigating the circumstances of Sala's death and said they have been providing updates to the Argentine's family as well as the family of the pilot of the aircraft, David Ibbotson.
A plane carrying Sala and Ibbotson went missing from radar over the English Channel on Jan. 21 after the player had finalised a deal to join the Premier League club. The plane was travelling from Nantes, France, to Cardiff, Wales.
Sala's body was identified in the wreckage of the plane on Feb. 7.

O'Dowd's debut fifty helps Netherlands dominate Zimbabwe

Netherlands 209 for 3 (O'Dowd 82*) beat Zimbabwe 205 for 8 (Taylor 71, Klaassen 2-29) by seven wickets
While the cricket watching public are binging on the World Cup, Netherlands made a serious statement by totally outplaying Zimbabwe, with opening batsman Max O'Dowd batting through the innings to ensure a chase of 206 was as straightforward as possible. The 25-year old was on ODI debut and made 82 off 116 balls.
Such was their dominance that Netherlands sealed victory with seven wickets and 26 balls to spare in a 47-over game.
Tobias Visee kick-started the chase with six fours in a knock of 28. But he was dismissed by Ainsley Ndlovu, who became the 26th player in ODI history to pick up a wicket with his first ball.
O'Dowd took control from there on, moving smoothly past fifty, and though Netherlands stumbled from 110 for 1 to 117 for 3, his presence at the crease denied Zimbabwe any further chances to get back in the game.
There were several other highlights for the Dutch as well, namely their Fred Klaassen (2-29), Paul van Meekeren (2-30) and Pieter Seelaar (2-32) restricting Zimbabwe to a manageable total. They combined so well together that only one opposition batsman crossed 35.
Brendan Taylor tried his best, making 71 off 85 even as wickets fell all around him. He walked in with the score on 39 for 2 and watched the innings unravel to 127 for 6. But through it all, he stayed firm, hitting seven fours and two sixes, finally falling in the 40th over. At that time, Zimbabwe were 159 for 7 but Kyle Jarvis and Donald Tiripano hoisted them up over 200.

How a surprise call from 'hero' Andy Roberts lifted struggling Mashrafe

Cricket
Wednesday, 19 June 2019 11:20

Mashrafe Mortaza had been struggling for wickets in the first three matches of the World Cup when he got a surprise call from one of his heroes, Andy Roberts.
Having been introduced in 2001, Mashrafe had subsequently met Roberts on a number of tours to the West Indies, but there had been a long gap since they last spoke. Mashrafe said that the advice was reminiscent of what Roberts, who still calls him by his nickname, had told him the first time they met.
"We have spoken intermittently in the past," Mashrafe told ESPNcricinfo. "We went through a gap. We used to talk at times. But he recently took my number from Courtney Walsh to get in touch with me. He told me that everything is fine. Everyone has a phase. He told me to concentrate. It is the same thing that he told me all those years ago. His message was simple. I was definitely surprised. He is getting old, but he is still following cricket. He still calls me by my nickname 'Koushik'."
On an invitation from the Bangladesh Cricket Board in 2001, Roberts had undertaken a week long bowling camp at the Bangabandhu National Stadium in Dhaka. Mashrafe, the current ODI captain, was only a 17-year old in that camp which was also attended by a number of future Test bowlers. Roberts' contribution to the development of fast bowling in the country is widely acknowledged.
"Those who follow cricket deeply, only they know who Andy Roberts is, and his amazing record," Mashrafe said. "We as cricketers know him well. He is such a great cricketer. He didn't just stop teaching me that one time. He always follows up. It is obviously a big achievement that such a great player like him follows me."
Mashrafe added that back in 2001 they were in such awe of Roberts that for much of the time, they just stared at him. Years later when cricket clips became available on Youtube, Mashrafe said that he used to look at the videos of Roberts bowling in his heyday.
"He told me that everything is fine. Everyone has a phase. He told me to concentrate. It is the same thing that he told me in 2001" Mashrafe relays Roberts' advice
"It was just amazing when he came to Bangladesh in 2001," he said. "I was there with future Test pace bowlers like Talha Jubair, Anwar Hossain Monir, Mahbubul Alam Robin, Shafaq Al Jabir, Syed Rasel, Tarek Aziz and Alamgir Kabir. We just used to stare at him at first, knowing who he was. We never saw him play but later we caught up on Youtube. We saw what a great fast bowler he was. Those who were in his class, it was amazing for all of us."
In the first match since speaking to Roberts, ironically against West Indies, Mashrafe bowled an excellent spell without anything to show for in the wickets column. It did, however, keep the run-rate in check. Then on the back of Shakib Al Hasan's unbeaten 124, Bangladesh ended up chasing 322 with 51 balls to spare.
Mashrafe said that the win has really changed the mood within the team. "It was an important win, not just to survive in the tournament but just seeing how that week leading up to the game went for us. We got one point from a game [washout against Sri Lanka] that we thought we could win, having already lost two back-to-back games.
"Nobody would say it but this did affect everyone in the dressing room. Losing the close game to New Zealand wasn't also a good message for the team. Beating West Indies has reignited the team. Everyone is now confident."

Kane Williamson's hundred downs error-prone South Africa

New Zealand 245 for 6 (Williamson 106*, de Grandhomme 60, Morris 3-49) beat South Africa 241 for 6 (Van der Dussen 67, Ferguson 3-59) by four wickets
As it happened
South Africa came well and truly acropper against Kane Williamson's cool and Colin de Grandhomme's muscle, New Zealand all but knocking their opponents out of a World Cup for a third time with a four-wicket win at Edgbaston.
Williamson and de Grandhomme shared in a 91-run stand that set up New Zealand's pursuit of South Africa's 241 for 6, Williamson pumping a last-over six off Andile Phehlukwayo that brought up a match-winning hundred before his umpteenth dab to third man brought up the win.
South Africa spilled several chances in the field - and would have had Williamson caught behind in the 70s had they used their review - wilting under the pressure as New Zealand secured their fifth World Cup victory over them.

Organisers to review security after pitch invader sustains broken arm
Published in
Cricket
Wednesday, 19 June 2019 12:40

Organisers of the Cricket World Cup are "reviewing circumstances" after a spectator sustained a broken arm at the end of the game between England and Afghanistan in Manchester on Tuesday.
The spectator ran on to the playing field at the end of the match and, as he approached players, was apprehended by stewards. He fell heavily and was subsequently taken to hospital where the broken arm was diagnosed.
But it is the events leading up to the incident that may concern organisers just as much. Earlier in the game another spectator - who had been sitting close to the group who came on at the end of the match - ran on to the pitch and removed the bails at both ends. He was not apprehended until he crossed the advertising hoardings on the opposite side of the ground.
Other spectators in the same stand claim passive stewarding did nothing to prevent the incident. They also claim the spectator - who they say was young and inebriated - was not removed from the ground but kept in a holding area by a public bar for several hours. As a result, they suggest there was little disincentive to deter other pitch invaders.
Pitch invasion is considered a criminal act in the UK. An announcement is made before each match warning spectators that anyone encroaching on the playing area will be prosecuted for aggravated trespass and could face heavy fines. A spokesperson for the Cricket World Cup was unable to clarify whether any further action had been taken against any of the pitch invaders.
"A spectator, who was involved in a pitch invasion at the England vs Afghanistan match, slipped awkwardly and suffered a suspected fracture of his arm," the spokesperson told ESPNcricinfo. "The individual discharged himself from medical care at Old Trafford before transportation to a local hospital was arranged.

"CWC19 and the venues take the security of everyone involved in the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup very seriously and we work closely together to ensure the highest safety standards are adhered to regarding spectators. CWC19 is thoroughly reviewing the circumstances of this accident with the venue."
Armed police and a large numbers of stewards are no longer an unusual sight at sports events in the UK. The global heightened security threat, combined with a fear of further attacks on sportspeople - incidents such as the stabbing of Monica Seles and the assault on Aston Villa's Jack Grealish during the derby match with Birmingham City spring to mind - have created a zero tolerance attitude towards spectators encroaching on to the playing area.
Andrew Symonds and Terry Alderman are among the players to have taken matters into their own hands when approached by pitch invaders. Symonds memorably stopped one such spectator especially abruptly with a shoulder barge in March 2008 while Alderman sustained a dislocated shoulder in November 1982 when tackling a spectator who had run on to the pitch and punched him.

Zion on comparisons: 'I just look to be myself'
Published in
Breaking News
Wednesday, 19 June 2019 12:26

NEW YORK -- As Zion Williamson prepares to be taken with the No. 1 overall pick in the NBA draft by the New Orleans Pelicans Thursday night, he declared that he isn't worried about any comparisons to players who came before him.
"Honestly, with the comparison stuff, it's nice, it's cool, but I don't look into it," Williamson said Wednesday morning at the league's pre-draft media availability in midtown Manhattan.
"I just look to be myself. I'm not trying to be nobody.
"I'm just trying to be the first Zion."
That will certainly be more than good enough for New Orleans, which is expected to make Williamson the top pick.
After averaging 22.6 points, 8.9 rebounds, 1.8 steals and 2.1 blocks at Duke, showing an unprecedented combination of size, strength and speed, the only question was who would get the chance to draft Williamson first overall. That was answered last month, when the Pelicans leaped to the top of the draft and won the right to select the generational prospect.
That -- along with the Los Angeles Lakers jumping up to the No. 4 spot -- helped pave the way for Pelicans star Anthony Davis to be sent to the Lakers in a trade over the weekend, allowing Williamson to walk in as the unequivocal face of the franchise.
Just don't try telling that to Williamson, who was the only person refusing to say he was guaranteed to be taken with the top pick.
"I just want to be in the NBA," he said. "I didn't have a favorite team growing up. Just to be in the NBA is all I ask for.
"Whatever team I end with, I know I'm going to give my all."
When asked his thoughts on the Davis trade, and where he was over the weekend when it went down, he said he was at a driving range in Durham, North Carolina.
"I looked at my phone and I was getting mentioned on Twitter a lot," Williamson said, "and they were just like, 'Anthony Davis has been traded for those three players.'
"He's a grown man. He can do what he wants. But right now, I'm just focused on which team I'm going to go to and try to fit in as best as I can."
Williamson recently visited New Orleans for the first time, and said he enjoyed the trip. But he also made sure to debunk a story going around about chicken tenders.
"The city was just very welcoming," he said. "Everywhere I went, I'm walking down the street and people are high-fiving me, saying they hope I come here. I've been seeing some people saying I got chicken tenders. No, that was my 5-year-old brother that did that.
"I got fried shrimp with some mashed potatoes."
Williamson has connections with several other players in this year's draft. Projected No. 2 overall pick Ja Morant is a fellow South Carolina native who once played on the same AAU team as him, while projected No. 3 pick RJ Barrett and likely top-10 selection Cam Reddish both played with Williamson at Duke this past season.
Naturally, a good chunk of his time Wednesday was spent answering questions about them -- specifically Morant and Barrett, who is likely to be a Knick.
"The way he threw lobs at Murray State, he was doing it back then," Williamson said of Morant. "I'd make backdoor cuts, and I didn't think he would see me. But he'd put it in the perfect spot.
"Can I sit here and say I knew Ja would be this good? I can't say that. I knew he'd be good but not to this level. For him to be here and to be like a top-three pick, it means a lot to me, it means a lot to the state of South Carolina."
Meanwhile, Williamson is confident Barrett will be everything that Knicks fans hope they'll get.
"I think if RJ gets drafted by New York, he'll handle it," Williamson said. "Not just good, but great. Better than people expect.
"RJ is cold-blooded. He's built for people doubting him or telling him he's not ready. RJ is built for that. I got to see it first-hand at Duke. I don't doubt RJ in the slightest. If he gets drafted out here, he's going to come out here and handle his business.
"I think they'll get a great player."
Williamson, who was relaxed and smiling throughout his half-hour chat with a large throng of reporters, looked completely at ease with the world he's about to be walking into. And, he said, he doesn't understand why anyone should think he'd be feeling any differently.
"I don't really see the pressure," Williamson said. "I'm doing what I love to do, and that's play basketball. I don't try to live up to nobody's expectations. They can set them there, I don't try to live up to them.
"I just try to be me. Be the best version of myself that I can be."
He did, however, acknowledge he isn't sure how he'll handle actually being drafted.
"Honestly, I don't know," he said. "I don't know how I'm going to react. I don't know if I'm going to cry or have this giant smile on my face.
"We'll see tomorrow night. But I know I'm very excited about it."

Police in Lakewood, Colorado, have asked the public for help in identifying a man who was involved in a brawl on the field at a youth baseball game Saturday.
Police spokesman John Romero told media that a game between 7-year-olds from Lakewood and Bear Creek got out of control after parents and coaches got into a dispute over a call by a 13-year-old umpire.
These adults took over the field and began assaulting each other on 6/15 during a youth baseball game. We're looking for any info, in particular to ID the man in the white shirt/teal shorts. Several people have already been cited in this fight and injuries were reported. pic.twitter.com/ieenhwCrbU
— Lakewood Police (@LakewoodPDCO) June 18, 2019
Adults quickly amassed on the field side of the backstop and punches were thrown. Police said several people have already received citations for disorderly conduct and fighting in public, but they are still trying to identify one man in particular.
"There were several reports of injuries and one serious injury," Romero said, according to The Denver Post. "We're looking for any information on this melee, but in particular the identity of the suspect in the white shirt and teal shorts who threw a sucker punch."
Romero said that the man they are looking for likely faces assault charges.
