OGILVIE, Minn. — When Skyline Motorsports was left without a driver to field its second car back in mid-June, Shane Clanton answered the call. Fast-forward to Saturday night at Ogilvie Raceway and he turned it into a winning decision.
Clanton outran Brandon Sheppard and Jimmy Mars to give Skyline Motorsports its first World of Outlaws Morton Buildings Late Model Series victory, halting Sheppard’s five-race win streak.
Clanton charged up to the front from his ninth-place starting spot and broke into the top-five by the fifth circuit. Clanton chose to hug the bottom line throughout the entire race and made it stick better than any of the cars in the field, driving under Sheppard for second on lap 22 and polesitter Ricky Weiss for the lead on lap 29.
Clanton masterfully maneuvered a pack of four slower cars to keep his lead over Sheppard with under 20 circuits remaining.
“We were good in lapped traffic,” Clanton said. “They could scoot and I could feel the gap, that’s how I got by Jimmy [Mars] and [Ricky] Weiss. They slipped and our car was good enough to take advantage and fill the hole.”
But “The Georgia Bulldog” had yet to face what was potentially his biggest challenge of the night – a restart with 15 laps to go and a hungry Sheppard on his rear bumper.
Forced to try and outrun the Rocket1 Racing guru, Clanton stuck to his guns on the low side and simply drove away from Sheppard and Mars in the closing laps to earn his 44th career World of Outlaws victory and first since Screven Motor Speedway back in early February.
Earlier this year, Clanton picked up a huge win in a Dirt Late Model Dream preliminary feature at Eldora Speedway under then-car owner Ron Davies in his signature black-and-yellow No.25. Now, just eight races into driving under the new team, Clanton has picked up his first win for car owner Greg Bruening.
“We just got some better help and the crew is just gelling,” he said. “With as much help as I’ve got, I get to concentrate on making adjustments to, instead of working on, my race car, so that means a lot.”
But this triumphant effort wasn’t just any ordinary win. Sheppard and the Rocket1 Racing team have been on an incredible hot streak that still seems endless, sitting 192 points ahead of second-place and on an unheard of 21 top-fives in 22 starts.
“The 1 car had won five-in-a-row, so if all of them other guys thought they could outrun him, just come do it,” Clanton said. “It’s tough. That’s probably the best team in the sport, hands down, year after year. This roll they’ve been on this past month is tough. But we’ve been working and tweaking on our car, and it showed tonight how good we can be.”
Sheppard finished second.
“I just got us behind in qualifying, I didn’t run the right line and that put us starting fourth in the heat race,” Sheppard said. “We ran third in the heat and had to start seventh, but that’s where we messed up tonight, having to start back in the feature.”
The finish:

FAIRBURY, Neb. — NOS Energy Drink USAC National Midget Series point leader Tyler Courtney finished off Jefferson County Speedway’s Riverside Chevrolet Midwest Midget Championship presented by Westin Packaged Meats and Schmidt’s Sanitation by storming to victory lane in Saturday night’s 40-lap feature.
Courtney took advantage of a Kevin Thomas Jr, miscue on a lap-five restart to take command after starting from the pole and led the frantic final 36 laps aboard the Clauson-Marshall Racing No. 7bc NOS Energy Drink Toyota-powered entry.
It wasn’t without some late drama though, as Thomas had one last shot at stealing the win after a final caution that set up a four-lap dash to the stripe.
“I saw someone there racing with me for the win,” Courtney said. “I hadn’t been on the bottom of the track since early in the race so I knew I just had to keep hitting my marks up top.”
While Courtney started from the pole, it was front row outside starter Thomas jumping into the initial lead as Courtney fell back to fourth behind Jerry Coons Jr. and Tanner Thorson on the opening lap.
Courtney rebounded quickly though by getting back up to second by the time the first of three cautions flew after four laps for 2016 Fairbury winner Chad Boat.
And when Thomas stumbled on the turn-two cushion on the restart, Courtney took quick advantage and raced into a lead that he wouldn’t relinquish aside from a few backstretch feet on the 38th lap.
A 22-lap green-flag stretch had the leaders dicing through traffic much of the way until Brady Bacon came to a stop outside of turn two with 26 laps in the books. And, by that time, Courtney had three lapped cars separating himself from Thomas and reigning series champion Logan Seavey.
Courtney raced away on open track as Thomas and Seavey lost ground working lapped traffic. The advantage was negated when Ethan Mitchell spun to a stop in turn three with just four laps to go.
Thomas challenged on the final restart, edging ahead briefly exiting turn two on the 38th lap. Courtney continued to rail the topside and made it work for his sixth win of the year.
“We brought our game tonight,” Courtney explained. “We have to capitalize on nights like this when we start up front.”
Thomas settled for second in the Petry Motorsports No. 5 entry. “Other than my mistake early in the race, I felt like we had equal cars,” Thomas said. “I tried to sneak by and it worked until I got in the grease and pushed up.”
Seavey settled for the show position in the Keith Kunz Motorsports Mobil 1 No. 67 Toyota-powered machine. “Those last 10 laps were a lot of fun, this track is always fun to race at,” Seavey said
Coons crossed the stripe fourth while Tyler Thomas earned Hard Charger honors by rounding out the top five after starting 11th.

WILMOT, Wis. — Donny Schatz couldn’t hold back the emotion any longer.
With his arms raised and cheeks pushed up by a grin, Schatz yelled with a childlike giggle, “Hell yeah, I won at Wilmot! That’s off the books.”
The 10-time World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series champion and now 287-time series feature winner claimed his first victory at Wilmot Raceway Saturday night. It was his fourth win of the season.
“The older you get, you probably put more of a fine-tooth comb on places you haven’t won at and this was one of them,” Schatz said.
Schatz and his Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing team unloaded Saturday evening with a fast race car. Schatz set the pace in hot laps and qualified second behind point leader Brad Sweet.
In his Drydene Heat race, Schatz won by 1.4 seconds. He backed that performance up by winning the DIRTVision Fast Pass Dash with a 2.7-second lead at the finish.
Dominating the night was not enough to convince Schatz he would excel in the feature, though. He admitted he didn’t know what to expect from the third-mile track, anticipating lap times to drop during the feature.
On the initial start, outside polesitter Daryn Pittman made a charge at Schatz for the lead. He kept pace with the reigning champion down the back stretch and dove underneath him in turn three. The two entered turn four side by side — the closest anyone came all night to passing Schatz. But the Fargo, N.D., native had the better run off the corner and cleared Pittman down the front stretch.
For the remaining 39 laps, the only time drivers got close enough to see the bumper of Schatz’s Toco Warranty No. 15 car was during a caution on lap 13 for a car going off track in turn two. After that, Schatz spent his night methodically navigating lapped traffic.
However, Friday night’s feature winner at Hartford Speedway, David Gravel, was not going to let Schatz cruised to the victory. Gravel, Sweet and Pittman traded positions in the top-four all night.
After battling side by side for several laps, having to be gentle on the throttle through the tight slick corners, Sweet eventually passed Pittman for second on lap 16. Gravel did the same a lap later, moving past the Roth Motorsports No. 83 car for third.
With 10 laps to go, Gravel finally put together a strong enough lap to work his way by Sweet and try to track down Schatz.
At that point, there was about a two second gap between Schatz and second-place. Gravel slowly closed it lap by lap. Every lap car that halted Schatz’s momentum was a few more tenths of a second gained by Gravel.
By the time the white flag came out, Gravel had made up close to a second on Schatz. It wasn’t enough, though. He ran out of time.
“I couldn’t get by Daryn very quick and then couldn’t get by Brad,” Gravel said. “Then it was just a little too late to make a charge a Donny.”
He and his Jason Johnson Racing team were happy with the run, though, leaving the weekend with a win and runner-up finish.
By taking the win Schatz finally broke his winless streak he’s had since the end of May when he won at Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway.
“I’m sure somebody was coming there at the end,” Schatz said. “I was kind of hanging. We could get through a few lap cars, but then when I had to move around in (turns) one and two I wasn’t as good. But glad to get a win. It’s been a while. Always feels good to get the win, especially here in Wisconsin.”
Schatz’s win put a small dent in Sweet’s point lead over him – he’s now 38 points behind the Kasey Kahne Racing driver.

Antoine Griezmann's lawyer, who was responsible for depositing his client's €120 million release clause at La Liga's headquarters, has criticised Atletico Madrid's reaction to the forward's transfer to Barcelona.
Sevan Karian paid the money to La Liga on Friday to pave the way for Barca to announce the signing of Griezmann on a five-year deal. Atletico responded furiously to the move, though, claiming that they're due an additional €80m.
- When does the 2019-20 La Liga season start?
Griezmann's release clause dropped from €200m to €120m at the start of the month. The Rojiblancos claim a pre-contract agreement which pre-dates July 1 means Barca should have to pay €200m. President Enrique Cerezo has even suggested he has evidence of the pre-contract.
Sources at Barcelona have told ESPN FC that the Spanish champions remain calm about the threats and insist the club have not breached FIFA's regulations. But Karian said Atletico have completely backtracked on what they told Griezmann when he announced he was leaving in May.
"Antoine is very disappointed with the attitude shown by Atletico and the club's hierarchy," he said. "They are acting in bad faith and are communicating the opposite of what they told him in person.
"But let them do as they see fit, we will do the same if necessary. For the moment, for [Griezmann], he only wants to think about this new chapter in his career. He wants to celebrate this weekend by discovering his new home."
Griezmann's departure has not gone down well with Atletico fans, either. His plaque outside the Wanda Metropolitano -- something you earn by playing 100 games for the club -- was defaced by supporters on Saturday. The same happened last summer when former goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois signed for rivals Real Madrid.
Barca will present Griezmann on Sunday at Camp Nou but they have not yet confirmed what shirt number he will wear at his new club.
There has been speculation the club will give him the No. 7 shirt if they can sell record signing Philippe Coutinho, whose agent has called on Barcelona to clarify their stance over the former Liverpool man.
"[Barca's director of football] Pep Segura told me he was untransferable," Kia Joorabchian told RMC. "He told me that last week. The president [Josep Maria Bartomeu] told me the same the week before, that they didn't plan on selling him to any club.
"Given that, we decided not to look at the market, that's why he doesn't have any offers.
"It is a fact that [Barca's advisor in Brazil] Andre Cury works in a different way from that of Barcelona and he is pressing for Coutinho to be included in the transfer of Neymar from PSG.
"I have kept silent during this period, but I will not allow Barcelona to lie about the player. They must tell the truth. If they want Coutinho to leave, they have to say so -- then we will decide with the player what is best for his future."

Manchester City's preseason preparations have been thrown into disarray due to an "unforeseen administrative issue" by the club's travel advisors, forcing Pep Guardiola's players to delay their flight to China by over 24 hours.
Sources have told ESPN FC that an admin error by Thomas Cook, the company with the contract to arrange all of City's travel, led to the cancellation of Saturday's flight to Shanghai for the first leg of the club's summer tour of the Far East.
- Premier League fixtures 2019-20 in full
- Who has qualified for Europe from the Premier League?
- When does the transfer window close?
Although the City squad had not arrived at Manchester Airport before the flight was cancelled, a large number of the club's staff had already checked in before being told that they would not be flying until Sunday at the earliest.
The club said in a statement posted on social media: "Due to an unforeseen administrative issue beyond the club's control, which is being resolved, regrettably, we will embark on our preseason tour a little later than intended.
Despite reports suggesting the delay was due to City's flight being refused permission to enter Chinese airspace, sources have told ESPN FC that the reason for the delay was down to the club's travel company.
City are due to play their first preseason fixture against West Ham in Nanjing on Wednesday in the Premier League Asia Trophy.
But with Guardiola deciding to have his players train at the club's CFA training centre in Manchester on Sunday morning, the squad were not due to fly out to China until early evening.
As a result, the Premier League champions are not expected to arrive in Shanghai until Monday lunchtime at the earliest -- just over 48 hours before their clash with West Ham.
Earlier on Saturday, City had announced their 26-man squad for the trip which included summer signings Rodri and Angelino as well as 12 academy prospects.
However, Brazil internationals Ederson, Fernandinho and Gabriel Jesus were not included following their victorious appearance in the Copa America final last weekend, while Sergio Aguero and Nicolas Otamendi were also left out after Argentina contested the third-place playoff.

Club America midfielder Guido Rodriguez was awarded the 2019 Liga MX's Balon de Oro award on Saturday, given to the league's top player.
The Argentina international beat fellow countryman Rogelio Funes Mori of Monterrey and French striker Andre-Pierre Gignac of Tigres UANL.
Rodriguez also took home about the award for the league's top defensive midfielder. He was a pivotal anchor for the Mexico City giants, who won a domestic double in the 2018 Apertura tournament.

Leon coach Igancio "Nacho" Ambriz won coach of the year after leading the club to the top of the 2019 Clausura table before losing to Tigres in that final.
Gignac, who won the Balon de Oro in 2016, didn't go home empty handed as he was voted the league's top forward. Funes Mori won goal of the year for his stunning bicycle kick against Santos Laguna earlier this year in league play.
Other winners on the night included America's Agustin Marchesin for best goalkeeper, Leon's Angel Mena (offensive midfielder), Veracruz's Sebastian Jurado (newcomer), and Cruz Azul's Pablo Aguilar (defender).
Former Mexico great Enrique Borja, who played at the 1966 and 1970 World Cups, was honored with a lifetime achievement award.
The awards ceremony was held at the Orpheum Theater in Los Angeles, with the voting done by league executives, coaches, players, and fans through an online poll.

TOKYO -- Former Cleveland Indians outfielder Leonys Martin has signed a one-year deal with the Chiba Lotte Marines of Japan's Pacific League.
Martin, who overcame a life-threatening bacterial infection last summer, was designated for assignment last month by the Indians. He was batting .199 with nine home runs and 19 RBIs in 65 games.
Cleveland acquired Martin from the Detroit Tigers at the trade deadline last season, but he played only six games before becoming ill and being hospitalized.
"It's an honor to be given this chance by the Marines," Martin said in a statement issued by the team. "I'll do everything I can in order to be the best player and teammate that I can become."
The 31-year-old Cuban player made his major league debut with the Texas Rangers in 2011 and also played for the Seattle Mariners, Chicago Cubs and Tigers.
Martin recorded more than 30 steals in the 2013 and 2014 seasons with the Rangers and hit a career-high 15 home runs with the Mariners in 2016.
In 770 major league games over nine seasons, he had a .244 batting average with 58 home runs, 228 RBIs and 126 stolen bases.

Jacques Kallis, Simon Katich part ways with Kolkata Knight Riders

Kolkata Knight Riders' IPL campaign next year will have a new think-tank after the management announced changes to the franchise's coaching set-up. The two-time IPL champions parted ways with head coach Jacques Kallis and assistant coach Simon Katich on Sunday, the former ending a nine-year relationship - as player and then coach - with the franchise.
Kallis was appointed Knight Riders' head coach in October 2015, taking over from Trevor Bayliss, the current England coach. Since his appointment, Knight Riders made three consecutive playoff appearances but failed to make the cut in 2019. Under Kallis and Katich, Knight Riders won 32 of their 61 games - a win-percentage of just over 50. In IPL 2019, the side finished fifth, losing out on playoff qualification based on net run-rate, after a six-match losing streak midway through the season.
Katich was appointed around the same time as Kallis, and the former Australia batsman also coached the team's Caribbean Premier League franchise, Trinbago Knight Riders, helping them win back-to-back titles in 2017 and 2018. The tenure with Trinbago also comes to an end for Katich, who will now coach the Manchester Originals team in the inaugural season of The Hundred.
Kallis, however, could remain a part of the Knight Riders brand, according to team CEO Venky Mysore.
"Jacques Kallis has been an integral part of the KKR family and will always remain so," Mysore said, while announcing the changes. "We will be exploring ways of working with Jacques as we pursue our vision of establishing the Knight Riders brand as a global brand."
Kallis, too, released a statement following the decision.
"After nine fantastic years with KKR since 2011, as a player, mentor and Head Coach, it's time to explore new opportunities," he said. "I would to like to thank the owners, management and fellow players for many happy memories."
Knight Riders are yet to announce replacements for the two coaches.
