Bickerstaff gets multiyear deal to coach Cavs

Published in Basketball
Tuesday, 10 March 2020 14:36

The Cleveland Cavaliers and coach J.B. Bickerstaff have agreed to a multiyear contract, the team announced Tuesday.

Terms were not disclosed, but sources tell ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski that Bickerstaff agreed to a four-year deal that will take him through the 2023-24 season.

Bickerstaff took over as head coach last month after Cleveland and John Beilein agreed to part ways.

Bickerstaff is 5-5 heading into Tuesday's game in Chicago, including impressive wins over the Denver Nuggets, San Antonio Spurs, Miami Heat and Philadelphia 76ers.

Bickerstaff was hired this past offseason as part of an eventual succession plan with Beilein, which happened sooner than expected after the longtime college coach struggled with his transition to the NBA.

Bickerstaff previously coached in Houston and Memphis before coming to Cleveland. He led the Rockets to the playoffs in 2015-16.

Conforto has oblique strain, may miss opener

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- New York Mets outfielder Michael Conforto strained an oblique muscle on his right side, and it's too early to determine whether he will be able to play in New York's opener against the World Series champion Washington Nationals on March 26.

Conforto was injured Saturday against the Nationals and returned to New York on Monday night to meet with Mets medical director Dr. David Altchek.

"We're going to back him off here from activities the next couple of days and then reassess him next week," Mets general manager Brodie Van Wagenen said Tuesday.

Conforto, an All-Star in 2017, set career highs last season with 33 homers and 92 RBIs while batting .257 with an .856 OPS in 151 games. He played in 153 games in 2018.

He was hurt while catching a fly ball.

"Awkwardly in the wind, in the sun, he sort of fell to the ground, and he was sore on his right side," Van Wagenen said. "He was feeling better day over day over the course of last couple of days, but we wanted to be smart about it, get an MRI done."

Conforto, who turned 27 on March 1, is slated to be New York's regular right fielder again this season and a middle-of-the-order bat. The Mets have outfield depth on the roster: Brandon Nimmo, Jake Marisnick and Jeff McNeil could all be options in right if Conforto misses time.

Left fielder J.D. Davis, who can also play third base, recently returned from a jammed shoulder. And left fielder Yoenis Cespedes' playing status remains uncertain after he missed all of last season and most of 2018 with injuries.

Kopech clocks 100 mph in 1st outing since TJ

Chicago White Sox pitcher Michael Kopech made an impressive return from Tommy John surgery with a 1-2-3 inning Tuesday in a spring training game against the Texas Rangers.

According to reporters present in Glendale, Arizona, Kopech's first four pitches were clocked over 100 mph. Kopech, ranked as the No. 16 overall prospect in Major League Baseball by ESPN's Kiley McDaniel, retired Eli White and Isiah Kiner-Falefa on groundouts and struck out Greg Bird.

Kopech hadn't pitched in a major league game since undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2018.

Kopech is known for his high-velocity fastball, but he has said he's now more comfortable with his secondary pitches and is "focused on pitching rather than throwing."

The White Sox acquired Kopech in 2016 from the Boston Red Sox in the blockbuster Chris Sale trade. The 23-year-old right-hander made four starts for the White Sox in 2018, going 1-1 with a 5.02 ERA.

Yanks' Sanchez comes down with regular flu bug

TAMPA, Fla. -- New York Yankees catcher Gary Sanchez missed batting practice Tuesday because he has the flu and will be reevaluated later this week.

Manager Aaron Boone said Sanchez, sidelined since the weekend by a sore back, was examined by team doctors.

"He had the fever last night, " Boone said. "They tested him and it was positive for the flu. He'll be away from us for the next couple days, at least. We'll see where he is at that point."

Sanchez will be evaluated again Friday.

He played consecutive games for the first time this year on Thursday and Friday, then felt back soreness on Saturday and hasn't played since. He took part in catching drills Monday and was scheduled to resume batting practice on Tuesday.

Yankees ace Gerrit Cole missed a couple of days last week because of a fever.

Outfielder-designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton, who strained his right calf during defensive drills on Feb. 26, will start running outdoors Wednesday or Thursday. Stanton, expected to be out until sometime in April, has been playing catch and hitting in an indoor cage.

Left-hander James Paxton is scheduled to start a throwing program Wednesday as part of his rehabilitation from back surgery on Feb. 5 for a herniated disk and the removal of a cyst. He likely will be sidelined until May or June.

YANMAR Increases Support Of Front Row

MOORESVILLE, N.C. – Following a successful partnership in 2019, YANMAR America will increase its involvement with Front Row Motorsports throughout the NASCAR Cup Series season.

The company will serve as the primary sponsor of John Hunter Nemechek and the No. 38 Ford Mustang team at Atlanta Motor Speedway this weekend.

YANMAR, a global company based in Osaka, Japan, with a North America headquarters in Adairsville, Ga., will also be the primary sponsor of Nemechek and the No. 38 Ford Mustang during the NASCAR All-Star weekend and the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway in May.  The YANMAR colors and branding will return to the No. 38 at Kentucky Motor Speedway in July.  In addition, YANMAR continues to be an associate sponsor of both the No. 38 and No. 34 team with driver Michael McDowell.

For more than a century, YANMAR has grown to become a global leader in the design and manufacturing of advanced performance diesel engines and diesel-powered equipment, as well as gas engine-based energy systems. Closer to home, YANMAR diesel-powered generators are instrumental in operating FRM’s team haulers at the track each week.

“We believe that the NASCAR fan base and our customers align perfectly,” said Jeff Holland, Division Manager – Industrial Engine Division, YANMAR America. “The opportunity to continue and grow our partnership with Front Row Motorsports, John Hunter Nemechek and Michael McDowell, will help us reach more fans and educate them about our products and services.  This is an exciting time for YANMAR with this relationship.”

In addition to helping power the team’s haulers and serving as the primary sponsor this weekend, YANMAR is also continuing to work with FRM to produce “Inside Front Row Motorsports,” a behind-the-scenes video series, featuring an exclusive look at the preparations involved in a typical race weekend for the team.

“It’s been a lot of fun working with the folks at YANMAR,” said Nemechek. “As a driver, it means a lot to have a partner like them return for another year. Building our brands together, moving up through the Cup Series together, focusing on that opportunity and growing together – that’s what it’s all about.”

Felipe Nasr Making IndyCar Debut For Carlin

INDIANAPOLIS – Veteran sports car racer Felipe Nasr will make his NTT IndyCar Series debut this weekend during the Grand Prix of St. Petersburg.

Nasr, 27, will drive the No. 31 Chevrolet fielded by Carlin as a teammate to Max Chilton in the No. 59. Nasr tested Carlin’s No. 31 at recent tests at Circuit of the Americas and Sebring Int’l Raceway in advance of the opportunity to compete in St. Petersburg, Fla.

The opportunity to compete in the NTT IndyCar Series is the latest in a wide-ranging career that has seen Nasr compete for two seasons in Formula One for Sauber in 2015-16 before transitioning to sports car competition.

He made the full-time move to the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship in 2018, winning one race in the premier DPi class and capturing the series championship alongside co-driver Eric Curran for the Action Express/Whelen Engineering team.

Last year Nasr won two of IMSA’s biggest events, the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring at Sebring Int’l Raceway and the Petit Le Mans at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta.

Linda Vaughan Named Lady Of The Century

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – One of auto racing’s best-known hosts for more than six decades, Linda Vaughan has been named Lady of the Century by the West Coast Stock Car Hall of Fame.

Vaughan’s many achievements will be feted during the organization’s June 11 Induction gala, presented by World Wide Technology Raceway, at the Meritage Resort and Spa in Napa, Calif.

“We are honored to recognize Linda Vaughan and everything she has done to enhance all forms of racing,” said Ken Clapp, Chairman and CEO of the West Coast Stock Car Hall of Fame. “Our friendship – and her friendship with the racing community – spans a half century.

“The Lady of the Century is a unique award for an individual whose love of racing and racers is without parallel.”

The most iconic model in motorsports, Linda Vaughan was a world-wide figure as Miss Hurst Golden Shifter. But the Dalton, Ga. native was more than that – a self-taught PR and marketing expert who traded her costume after the race into a business suit.

Known as the First Lady of Motorsports, she worked for then-California-based Hurst Shifter, under George Hurst and Jack Watson. Ms. Vaughn was perhaps best known for her work at NASCAR premier series events but appeared at many other races – the Indianapolis 500, Formula One and NHRA national drag races.

In 1972, for example, Vaughan did 172 events. Her first love was drag racing, introduced to sport as a teen. She received a Wally among other NHRA awards for her public relations work in behalf of the organization. She also appeared in a number of film and television productions including, Stroker Ace, and was the subject of ESPN’s 30 for 30.

One of 20 individuals nominated for induction into the West Coast Stock Car Hall of Fame in 2019, Vaughan resides in Southern California.

The organization’s 17th inducted class is comprised of Mike Bliss, a USAC Silver Crown and NASCAR Gander RV and Outdoors Truck Series champion; Craig Keough, a Las Vegas team owner and track sponsor; Rick Mears, a four-time Indianapolis 500 champion; Jim Pettit II, the 1984 NASCAR Pacific Coast Region champion; Jerry Pitts, ARCA Menards Series West championship crew chief and team owner and Tom Sneva, the 1983 Indianapolis 500 winner and a ferocious pavement supermodified champion.

Six additional Heritage members – individuals whose careers took place, or began, prior to 1972 – also will be enshrined during the ceremonies, highlights of which will be shown later in the summer on MAVTV.

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – Plans to stage the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play in Austin, Texas, in two weeks continue despite the cancellation of a major music and arts festival there in the week leading up to the PGA Tour event.

The South by Southwest was set to begin Friday and run through March 22, three days before the start of the PGA Tour event, but city officials canceled the festival amid fears over the potential rapid spread of the coronavirus.

PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan said the Tour has formed a team of experts who are closely evaluating coronavirus threats, with the help of the World Health Organization, the CDC and local Texas public health officials.

“We are fully planning on being in Austin, Texas, for the WGC-Dell Match Play,” Monahan said Tuesday in his state-of-the-PGA Tour news conference at The Players Championship.

Monahan said contingencies are in place should the threat escalate.

“This thing is so dynamic that you just have to go hour-to-hour, day-to-day, but right now we have every assurance that we'll be in Austin for the event,” Monahan said.

The PGA of America issued a statement Tuesday refuting reports that there are plans to move the PGA Championship from TPC Harding Park later this year.

Under intense pressure, the city of Austin canceled its popular music and arts festival. More than 50,000 people signed an online petition calling for city officials to do so. A number of tech companies scheduled to participate also withdrew from the festival before it was canceled.

Austin officials took action even though the number of confirmed cases in Texas was relatively small. That festival draws participants and guests from all over the world.

Monahan said the Tour closely evaluated that decision with the help of local officials.

“When you see these cancellations, they happen for different factors and different reasons, some of which aren't applicable to us ... You step back and you actually look at the data, look at what's happening on the ground there, if your local public health officials feel confident that everybody can enter into a safe environment, and that we're protecting the well-being of all folks on site,” he said. “We feel like we have the support to continue to move forward, full support.”

Monahan said the PGA Tour’s team will evaluate the safety concerns of all its events as thoroughly.

“I think it goes without saying that the health, safety, well-being of our players, our fans, our tournaments, everybody that's involved in our ecosystem, is of utmost importance,” he said.

Judge: Ronaldinho could remain in jail for 6 months

Former Brazil World Cup winner Ronaldinho, who was arrested for possessing a fake Paraguayan passport, must remain in jail in the South American country after a judge on Tuesday refused a request for him to be released into house arrest.

The former Barcelona forward and his brother and business manager Roberto Assis were arrested last Friday after they were caught carrying the false Paraguayan documents. Brazilians do not need a passport to enter Paraguay so it was unclear why Ronaldinho had the fake documents in his possession.

The brothers will remain in a maximum security prison on the outskirts of Asuncion for as long as six months, or until the investigation is complete, judge Gustavo Amarilla said.

"Ronaldinho's freedom could lead to an obstruction [of justice] or an escape," Amarilla told reporters. "His presence in the country is necessary."

The brothers offered a $770,000 property as a guarantee but prosecutor Marcelo Pecchi argued they were a flight risk.

"The investigation is only beginning, we are looking into other conducts that may be related," Pecchi told reporters.

"If these people leave right now they will not be able to be brought to face trial because Brazil does not extradite its own citizens."

Although he last played professionally in 2015, Ronaldinho is still hugely popular with global football fans and advertisers and was invited to Paraguay by a local casino owner.

Chris Woakes hopes his decision to pull out of a lucrative IPL deal will prolong his England career.

The 31-year-old Woakes signed with Delhi Capitals for £160,000 in this year's IPL draft but pulled out of the tournament starting later this month amid the realisation that he had fallen down the pecking order of selection prospects for the looming T20 World Cup.

"I want to play for England as long as possible - that's still the pinnacle for me," Woakes told reporters in Sri Lanka, where England are preparing for a two-Test series beginning in Galle on March 19.

"I just feel like I'd been on a bit of a treadmill and I needed to get off for a bit of a breather. From a mental point of view it's about recharging those batteries.

"The IPL is great but I've been there and done it. That's not to say I don't want to do it again but at this moment England is the most important thing to me, as well as spending time at home with the family where I can."

Allrounder Woakes will return home after the second Test, which starts in Colombo on March 27, having also toured New Zealand and South Africa over the English winter. During the summer, he played every match of England's victorius World Cup campaign and four of the five Ashes Tests.

"You don't put yourself into these things intending to pull out. I went into the IPL auction hoping that I would get picked up, it's a great experience," Woakes added. "But it's impossible to do everything.

"International cricket can be draining at the best of times because there's so much pressure on you to perform. There's always people knocking on the door and to stay on top of your game all year round is hard. The schedule has just got busier and busier - the only breaks you really get in international cricket are at IPL time."

England head to Australia in October to contest the T20 World Cup but, while Woakes remains a key part of the ODI set-up, he has not played a T20I since 2015.

"If I felt like I had real good opportunity to be in that T20 squad I'd probably still go to IPL and try to produce some good form," he said. "They (the selectors) know what I'm about and what I can do but realistically it'd probably take a few injuries for me to be in contention.

"I suppose I don't know the answer to why that happened. I think it happened gradually. The 50-over World Cup was prioritised, which was right, and during that period I was rested during a lot of T20 series. Would I want to change that or have it any other way? No, because it meant that I focused more on 50-over cricket and that has made me a World Cup winner - you can't take that away.

"Hopefully I've extended my career rather than trying to spread it across all three formats."

Woakes claimed 2 for 21 from seven overs during England's drawn warm-up match against a Sri Lanka Cricket XI. The tourists will put the finishing touches on their first-Test preparations with a four-day tour match against a Sri Lanka Board President's XI starting on Thursday.
