Phillies ace Nola scratched from start due to flu

Published in Baseball
Monday, 09 March 2020 15:11

CLEARWATER, Fla. -- Philadelphia Phillies ace Aaron Nola was scratched from his scheduled start Monday against the New York Yankees due to the flu.

Phillies manager Joe Girardi said with an off day Wednesday, Nola may rejoin the team on Thursday. The date for Nola's next appearance is not clear.

"We've got to figure it out," Girardi said. "So much of it depends on how he feels."

The right-hander had been on track to start the Phillies' opener at Miami on March 26.

"It's something we're going to have to look at," Girardi said. "Does it get him off his day that he was suppose to pitch to start the season? Possibility. I don't know."

Girardi didn't rule out Nola making one fewer spring training start than originally planned.

Nola went 12-7 with a 3.87 ERA in 34 starts last season. He has a 53-35 mark over five big league seasons.

Kershaw back as Dodgers' Opening Day starter

Published in Baseball
Monday, 09 March 2020 15:14

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Clayton Kershaw will start the Los Angeles Dodgers' opener against the visiting San Francisco Giants on March 26.

Manager Dave Roberts announced the decision Monday.

Kershaw will extend his franchise record for Opening Day starts to nine. His streak of consecutive Opening Day starts was stopped last year when he began the season on the injured list with left shoulder inflammation and was replaced by Hyun-Jin Ryu.

Kershaw is 5-1 with a 1.05 ERA on Opening Day. A left-hander who turns 32 next week, Kershaw has not allowed a run in two exhibition starts, striking out eight and walking two in 4⅔ innings.

After Kershaw, the rest of the rotation will be Walker Buehler, David Price, Julio Urias and Alex Wood.

All-Star SS Lindor, Indians suspend negotiations

Published in Baseball
Monday, 09 March 2020 15:37

Francisco Lindor says he still wants to sign a long-term extension with the Indians but that it won't happen in the near future.

In a story published by The Athletic on Monday, the four-time All-Star shortstop said the sides have suspended talks with Opening Day a little more than two weeks away.

"We had good conversations," Lindor told The Athletic. "We couldn't come up with an agreement. So we put that aside and let's focus on winning."

Lindor, 26, avoided arbitration this offseason, signing a one-year, $17.5 million deal -- a $7 million bump over what he made in 2019. He won't be a free agent until after the 2021 season.

Lindor didn't detail what type of deal he's looking for from Cleveland but did tell The Athletic that he is seeking more than the nine-year, $215 million contract Christian Yelich signed with the Brewers last week.

"My agent knows my value, I know my value. But that's something that's a little more private," Lindor told The Athletic. "But I do know what's fair for both sides. I'm very aware. I've studied it."

Ireland 'gutted' by France postponement - Farrell

Published in Rugby
Monday, 09 March 2020 07:56

Ireland coach Andy Farrell says his players have been left "gutted" by the postponement of Saturday's Six Nations game against France.

The Paris encounter has become the third of this season's men's Six Nations matches to be called off because of the coronavirus outbreak.

"The reaction of the players when we've come off the back of a good morning's work was one of deflation," he said.

Italy's games in Ireland and at home to England have already been postponed.

"Yeah, gutted," added Farrell, who is in his first season as Ireland coach after taking over from Joe Schmidt.

"We've built up for a couple of weeks on the back of a bitter disappointment [against England].

"We were looking forward to the week ahead. We're disappointed that it's not going ahead but at the same time we fully understand.

"There's nothing you can do. You can only control the controllables."

With the Six Nations cut short, Ireland's players will now head back to their provinces although it remains to be whether there is further disruption to the European club and Pro14 campaigns over the coming weeks amid the coronavirus concerns.

Ireland will have a summer Test series in Australia before attempts will be made to finish the Six Nations in the autumn.

"Some teams schedule four [games] but we schedule three in November so we've got a window and we're very open to that," added Farrell.

"We're more than [still] in it [the Six Nations]. We're a team that's still in control of its own destiny so it's not a bad place to be."

The chairman of a Premiership rugby club said it was a "commercial decision" to turn away former Flybe staff from a match on Saturday.

The staff had won Exeter Chiefs tickets at work that had been issued as part of a sponsorship arrangement between the airline and the club.

They were among 2,000 workers made redundant when the airline collapsed.

Tony Rowe said "there isn't a lot of compassion in business" after ticket holders were left disappointed.

"I feel sorry for all their staff who have lost their jobs but the reality is they were given something by their previous employers and that item was void," he said.

He added the rugby club was "not a charity".

Flybe staff were allocated tickets as work incentives and some turned up to the match against Bath expecting to use them.

However, they were surprised to be told they could not attend the game as the tickets were no longer valid.

Mr Rowe said he was "saddened to hear of the airline's demise" but it had "failed to conclude a commercial agreement".

He explained tickets were issued to Flybe, who had been sponsors since 2010, and the club did not know some were used as staff incentives.

Mr Rowe said airline managers were told "if the deal is off, the deal is off" and that their allocated tickets would not be accepted at the gate.

"It appears this key information was not forwarded on to those staff who had been allocated tickets for this game and that of future games," he added.

All Flybe staff have now been offered free admission to watch the Exeter Braves, the club's second team, in a match next month "as a small gesture".

Tickets for the match against Saracens Storm are available on the club's website at £10 for an adult.

Exeter Chiefs are currently top of the Premiership after beating Bath 57-20.

This year's Six Nations will have to wait to reach its conclusion.

With the ongoing concern over the coronavirus outbreak, only Wales v Scotland at the Principality Stadium is scheduled to go ahead this weekend on what was supposed to be 'Super Saturday'.

The decision to call off France v Ireland in Paris, along with Italy v England in Rome's Stadio Olimpico, leaves this year's championship up in the air.

As we wait for news on when the postponed fixtures will take place, BBC Sport looks at the key questions surrounding the 2020 tournament.

Are England favourites to win the Six Nations?

With Scotland ending France's Grand Slam hopes following a 28-17 victory on Sunday, the door has opened for England to claim the Six Nations title.

Eddie Jones' side, who beat Wales 33-30 on Saturday to secure a first Triple Crown in four years, are level with France in the Six Nations standings but have a slightly better points difference of 15 compared to France's 13.

When the fixture against Italy is rearranged later in the year, England would expect to win and significantly improve their points difference.

But round four's results have also handed Ireland a chance of winning a second championship in three years.

Andy Farrell's team are on nine points in the table with a points difference of five, but have played one game less than the rest of the teams after last week's match against Italy was called off.

If Ireland secure bonus-point wins over Italy at Stadio Olimpico and then against France at Stade de France, they would be crowned champions regardless of the result England achieve in their rescheduled match.

France could also still win the title if they claim a bonus-point victory over Ireland and England fail to match that result against Italy.

Where can Scotland and Wales finish?

England, Ireland and France may be favourites to be crowned Six Nations winners but Scotland still have a slim chance of causing a shock upset.

If Gregor Townsend's side manage a win over Wales at the Principality Stadium, they would then have to hope Ireland lose to Italy, then draw with France in Paris.

Scotland would also need England to suffer an unlikely defeat against bottom side Italy when the postponed fixture is given the green light.

Wales head coach Wayne Pivac will be hoping to stop the rot and end on a positive note after his side lost three matches in the competition for the first time since 2007 following defeat by England.

The 2019 Six Nations champions have recorded just one win during this year's tournament, opening their campaign with a 42-0 victory over Italy in February.

If Wales secure victory in Cardiff over Scotland, and Ireland lose both their games in hand against Italy and France, then Welsh pride would be somewhat restored with a third-placed finish.

However, Wales could end up bottom of the championship if they lose to Scotland and the Italy stage an almighty comeback and win both of their rescheduled games against Ireland and England.

How many bonus points are on offer?

The bonus-points system was introduced to the Six Nations in 2017 and a change from two to four points for a win to "encourage and reward try scoring and attacking play".

One bonus point is awarded for scoring four tries or more and for losing by a margin of seven points or fewer.

Two points are given for games that end in a draw.

Three bonus points are also awarded to a team that wins all five matches and achieves a Grand Slam, which France would have been a step closer to had they beaten Scotland in round four.

Coronavirus: When will postponed matches be played?

The tournament has been hampered by the spread of coronavirus, with Italy the worst-hit European country with more than 7,000 cases.

There are no confirmed dates as to when the postponed fixtures will take place.

The final game of the tournament between France and Ireland was the latest fixture to be postponed on Monday.

The French sports minister Roxana Maracineanu announced the decision to postpone after an "agreement with the French Rugby Federation and tournament organisers".

Ireland's match against Italy at the Aviva Stadium, which was scheduled to take place on 7 March, was the first game to be called off in February, with Ireland's chief medical officer saying the call to postpone was "not made lightly".

Six Nations officials then made the decision to postpone Italy's fixture with England at Stadio Olimpico in Rome on 14 March.

The announcement was made after the Italian government ordered all sporting fixtures in the country to be held behind closed doors until 3 April as part of measures to contain the outbreak.

England's final match postponed in Women's Championship

In the Women's Six Nations Championship, England are eight points clear at the top of the table after winning their first four matches but have been made to wait to secure a second successive Grand Slam.

They beat Wales 66-7 at Twickenham Stoop at the weekend to secure the Triple Crown but their final round match with last year's runners-up Italy has already been postponed because of the outbreak.

Second-place France could still win the title with two bonus-point victories from their final matches - if England fail to record a point when their match in Italy is able to be played.

France face Ireland at home on Sunday but their match in Scotland, scheduled for last weekend, was called off after a home player contracted coronavirus.

Looking Back: Hamlin Rules Daytona Again

Published in Racing
Monday, 09 March 2020 11:00

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Denny Hamlin became the sixth driver to win three or more Daytona 500s, Ryan Newman survived a frightening crash and President Donald Trump became the second sitting U.S. president to attend the Daytona 500 at Daytona Int’l Speedway.

It all played out over two days, Feb. 16-17, and was the culmination of two weeks of racing that left the historic 2.5-mile speedway looking more like a junkyard than the World Center of Racing. By our count more than 60 NASCAR Cup Series machines were involved in accidents during the Busch Clash, the Daytona Duels and the 62nd running of the Daytona 500.

Trump gave the command to start engines on Sunday afternoon but rain quickly moved into the area and, after polesitter Ricky Stenhouse Jr. led the first 20 laps of the event, the conclusion of the event was pushed to 4 p.m. the following day.

Having sold out for the fifth straight year, much of the crowd returned the following day. And through two stages and more than half the scheduled distance, drivers kept their noses clean and the race built toward its dramatic climax, it had all of the makings of becoming a Daytona 500 the fans would long remember.

But on lap 184 of 200, the much anticipated “big one” happened with 19 cars involved in a massive wreck that began when Joey Logano bump-drafted Aric Almirola into Brad Keselowski, sending Keselowski into the wall in front of the field.

The race resumed on lap 191 only to have another multi-car crash on lap 198, sending the race into overtime. It was on the second attempt at a green-white-checkered finish that the grim and ugly specter of disaster paid an unwelcome visit, producing a Daytona 500 finish NASCAR and its fans will never forget.

Newman had his No. 6 Roush Fenway Racing Ford in the lead heading to the checkered flag off of turn four when he attempted to block a run from Hamlin’s Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota.

Newman then swung back to the bottom of the track with fellow Ford driver Ryan Blaney on his rear bumper.

But the pair made contact and Newman spun into the outside wall with his car becoming airborne when just shy of the finish line it was impacted by the oncoming car driven by Corey LaJoie.

Hamlin took the checkered flag for his second consecutive Daytona 500 triumph, while Newman’s destroyed race car ground to a halt upside down and in flames.

The AMR Safety Crew worked diligently to extract Newman from the wreckage, but when the black screens were brought out to shield the grandstands from the view of Newman’s car, many feared the worst.

Newman was transported to nearby Halifax Health Medical Center while the world waited for news regarding the 42-year-old racer. Two hours after the race ended, NASCAR Executive Vice President and Chief Racing Officer Steve O’Donnell reported that Newman was in serious, but stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries.

The news got better quickly and on Wednesday afternoon — two days after the accident — Newman, who won the 2009 Daytona 500, walked out of the hospital.

The accident came one day short of the 19th anniversary of the death of Dale Earnhardt in a crash on the last lap of the Daytona 500 on Feb. 18, 2001.

While Newman’s survival showcased how safe NASCAR racing has become since the implementation of the HANS device, SAFER barriers, the Car of Tomorrow and other safety measures, it also highlighted to large national television audience, the abhorrent danger of the pack racing that comes with NASCAR events at Daytona and Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway.

Meanwhile, Hamlin quietly took his place among NASCAR’s legends — a three-time winner of The Great American Race.

“When I think about the names and of what a win would do here (Daytona), where does it put you and the names that it puts you with,” Hamlin said. “I consider those professors of racing like this and I’m just a guy that’s a student. It’s been great to be on the run that we’ve been on the last five years at this race track — well, more than five. It’s been eight years or so that we’ve been fantastic here.

“But I don’t know, I just can’t fathom, being that it’s harder to win today than ever because all the cars are so close together and with the attrition, the wrecks. It’s harder to win now than ever.”

Hamlin’s .014-second margin of victory over Blaney made it the second-closest finish in the history of the event. Hamlin also became the first driver since Sterling Marlin in 1994-’95 to win the Daytona 500 in back-to-back years.

Hamlin led 79 laps in what was the longest Daytona 500 on record, with overtime restarts extending the race to 209 laps.

SiteOne Backing Justin Allgaier In Atlanta

MOORESVILLE, N.C. – JR Motorsports announced today that SiteOne Landscape Supply Inc., a national full-line wholesale distributor of landscape supplies, will return as a primary sponsor of Justin Allgaier and the No. 7 team.

SiteOne, headquartered in Roswell, Ga., will partner with JRM for the upcoming NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Atlanta Motor Speedway on Saturday, March 14.

This will mark the second time SiteOne will be on the hood of the No. 7 Camaro. The company first partnered up with the team back in 2018 for the spring Xfinity Series race at Dover Int’l Speedway. Allgaier scored his first of five victories on the season in that event.

“We’re excited to partner with Justin and JR Motorsports again this year,” said Greg Kirksey, director of brand marketing for SiteOne. “It was a thrilling experience to be part of the No. 7 team in 2018 and a great way to connect with many of our customers who are big fans of the sport. We’re hoping to recreate some of that magic again.”

Allgaier is in his fifth year with JR Motorsports and his 10th full-time season in Xfinity Series competition. The 33-year-old driver has 11 series victories, 85 top fives and 177 top 10s to his credit. In nine starts at Atlanta Motor Speedway, Allgaier has two top fives and five top 10s, including a third-place run last season.

“I’m looking forward to having SiteOne Landscape Supply back on board with us in 2020,” said Allgaier. “They’re a great company and I feel fortunate to get the chance to represent them once again. Last time they partnered with us we ended the day in victory lane and I know this No. 7 team would love to be able to make that happen for them again this weekend when we head to Atlanta.”

WATERBURY, Vt. – Two more season-ending prizes have been added to the pool for the inaugural New England Late Model Challenge Cup presented by American Racer.

The American-Canadian Tour announced Monday that ARBodies and Five Star Race Car Bodies will each award a $500 product certificate to a participating driver following the 2020 Challenge Cup season.

The pair of certificates join the Crazy Horse Racing/Port City Racecars ACT chassis drawing that was previously announced. To be eligible for these drawings, drivers must register for the New England Late Model Challenge Cup presented by American Racer by the April 24 deadline. They must also compete in at least 10 eligible Challenge Cup events this year.

The latest contributions by ARBodies and Five Star further sweetens the pot for the first Challenge Cup campaign. The combined value of the season-ending point fund and contingency drawings is now nearing $20,000. At least $3,000 will go to the New England Late Model Challenge Cup champion. New registrations are arriving on a regular basis which will further grow the point fund.

“We’re excited to add two more great companies and drawings to the Challenge Cup,” ACT managing partner Cris Michaud said. “ARBodies and Five Star are already great contingency partners with the ACT Tour, and having both on-board for the Challenge Cup is even better. We think this program is just the start of even bigger things for the region’s weekly racers.”

The New England Late Model Challenge Cup presented by American Racer is a new program for weekly Late Model racers in New England. Five tracks in four different states will be part of this season’s championship. The 10 best results for registered drivers across all participating tracks will count towards their point total using a special system based on finishing position, car count, and cars passed.
