NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. – Monday qualifier David Morland IV shot a 10-under 61 on Friday at Newport Beach Country Club to take a two-stroke lead in the PGA Tour Champions' Hoag Classic.

"Nice stroll in the park," the 50-year-old Canadian said.

Morland had five birdies on each nine, closing with a birdie on the par-5 18th. He was a stroke off the course record set by Tom Purtzer in 2004 and matched by Nick Price in 2011 and Duffy Waldorf in 2015.

"I've been playing well for a few months now," Morland said. "Finished second in the Jamaican Open in December and then I finished second at the Q-school for the European Senior Tour, so I've got full status over there this year, and finished third and first at the other two tournaments over there. Naples, I lost in a playoff to get in, and then, obviously, got in this week and just making the most of it."

He qualified for the event Monday at Goose Creek in a fire-shortened round, with ties broken by matching scorecards.

"It's the craziest thing," Morland said. "I've got video. We were on the 18th hole, I think I was 3 under for the day and the chopper was picking up water right in front of us and dropping it on the fire. The flames looked about 20 to 30 feet and they said you've got to evacuate the property. So we were sending our scorecards in by picture because they wouldn't let us back on the property."

Defending Charles Schwab Cup champion Scott McCarron and Ken Duke were tied for second. They each had an eagle - McCarron on the par-5 third and Duke on the par-4 fifth.

"It was a pretty solid round all day long," said McCarron, a former UCLA player. "I drove it pretty well, I hit a couple real close shots like a couple inches on a couple holes. It's always nice to have birdies where you're just tapping in. Played the par 5s very well. Just one hiccup, a three-putt."

The 51-year-old Duke is in his second season on the senior tour.

"I'm very happy where I am today," Duke said. "Been struggling for the first rounds and finally we kind of made a little different game plan."

David Toms shot 65, and Ernie Els was at 66 with Miguel Angel Jimenez, Chris DiMarco, Steve Flesch, Ken Tanigawa and Billy Mayfair.

"My body feels good, swing feels pretty good, too, so I had a nice day," Els said. "It's tough putting. The greens are quite tricky this afternoon, but I feel like I'm hitting it nice."

Fred Couples topped the group at 67. The 2010 and 2014 winner eagled Nos. 3 and 18.

"I had two eagles and a birdie on the par 5s and that was it," Couples said. "I bogeyed the par 3. So it wasn't real good on some of the shorter par 4s. I've got to be a little better, maybe get a few more birdie putts on those holes. But again, the par 5s were a blessing, I played them 5 under."

Bernhard Langer, the 62-year-old German star coming off a victory last week in Tucson, Arizona, opened with a 70. He won the 2008 tournament.

Defending champion Kirk Triplett also shot 70.

'Better feel' at Galaxy with Ibra gone - Lletget

Published in Soccer
Friday, 06 March 2020 18:18

Zlatan Ibrahimovic may have brought plenty of goals with him in his two years with the LA Galaxy, but according to Sebastian Lletget, there's a "better feel" around the team now that he's gone.

Lletget, 27, opened up about life in MLS with Ibrahimovic, who left at the end of the 2019 season for a second stint with AC Milan, and said that despite the goals and offensive prowess, he was left frustrated playing alongside the former Sweden international.

"There's definitely a better feel around the place for sure," Lletget said on BSI: The Podcast this week. "As far as chemistry, that's only going to build with time."

Ibrahimovic scored 52 goals for the Galaxy in two seasons in which they failed to make the playoffs one year and were bounced from the postseason by crosstown rivals LAFC in his second.

However, Lletget maintained the scoring return was often not worth playing alongside the mercurial Ibrahimovic despite his prowess in front of goal.

"You couldn't be free," Lletget said. "It was super frustrating. You feel like you want to literally take your boots off and just walk off the field.

"It's tough to play against him and tougher to play with him."

Now the Galaxy are settling into a new reality, with Mexico star Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez brought in to help make up for some of the goals that Ibrahimovic took with him to Serie A.

Asked recently if he felt any pressure to fill the vacancy left by Ibrahimovic, the Mexico international said no.

Hernandez said: "Not really, because he didn't win a championship. If he won a championship that would change everything."

The Galaxy drew 1-1 with the Houston Dynamo in their season opener and will host the Vancouver Whitecaps on Saturday at Dignity Health Sports Park (stream live at 10 p.m. ET on ESPN+).

In his last ODI as captain of Bangladesh, Mashrafe Mortaza wanted to make sure he did not slip up even once, being aware that players are "vulnerable" to mistakes when they are ending a stint. Mortaza signed off as captain in style, leading Bangladesh to their 50th win under him in ODIs with a 3-0 whitewash over Zimbabwe in Sylhet. After Liton Das and Tamim Iqbal amassed big hundreds, Mortaza provided the first breakthrough in Bangladesh's defence of 322 and remained in control of his emotions throughout the game.

At one point he even allowed Mustafizur Rahman to keep a slip in the dying stages of the game, resulting in a catch the next ball. His open faith in his players, young and old, was one of the hallmarks of his captaincy.

After the game ended, Iqbal picked him up on his shoulders for a lap of honour. The Bangladesh players wore special jerseys with his name and number at the back, and "thank you captain" written in the front. They presented him with a special edition jersey as well as a commemorative plaque. There are also strong rumours that Mortaza's jersey may be retired by the BCB soon.

After all the formalities, Mortaza cut a relaxed figure in the press conference, particularly candid when speaking about his experience as one of the most important figures in Bangladesh, for more than five years.

"Now I am feeling relaxed," he said. "There's one less thing to worry about. It was a big responsibility. Usually at this time, some feel good some feel bad. I have mixed feelings too. To be honest, I am happy that I could finish well as a captain. I also ended on a win.

"Our main focus was winning the game. We planned and thought about the match. We knew that everything would have been spoiled had we lost. We had a big score but I didn't want to make a mistake today. When a person announces that something has ended, he is vulnerable to making mistakes. He knows there's no one to answer to afterwards. I was really focused on not making any mistakes. Everyone assumed that this was a straightforward win, but I wanted to finish well."

Mortaza took four wickets in the three ODIs against Zimbabwe, a stark improvement from his last campaign - the 2019 World Cup - when he took just one wicket in 56 overs across eight matches. He said that wickets have obviously given him some confidence, and he wants to keep performing.

"I had a really bad World Cup, and the team struggled too," he said. "I have turned around a bit. It is about time that I regained the confidence. Bowlers get confidence through wickets, notwithstanding how we bowl.

"I have to perform. It will be up to the selectors. A player has to play well, and then he becomes the captain, which itself is a huge pressure. But now as a player, I have a lot of time to think about myself which will help me a lot."

Mortaza downplayed his performance as a captain and said that a Bangladesh captain has to deal with a lot more off-the-field issues with players. "I never evaluated myself, I think I am an average captain," he said. "I have never given it any thought. For a captain in Bangladesh, though, there's a lot more work off the field with players. Once you are in the field, there isn't as much to do.

"But players are disturbed in many ways: personal problems, being out of form, not going on well with the coach, fitness problems. Everyone has a different struggle. The captain has to be with the player during those times. The captain has to take responsibility of the whole team, regardless of the team's result."

Mortaza also reiterated that a senior player should be given the ODI captaincy now, as he would have the prerequisite experience to handle high-pressure situations on and off the field.

"Captaincy was a big responsibility but whoever comes in next, he has to be three times more sensible and thoughtful. It will be easy when he wins, but when you lose there is a lot of pressure from the media, board and spectators.

"I have done it for six years, so I feel relaxed now. Which is why I said that one of the senior cricketers should take over the captaincy. They can face the media, and have played for a long time. They can better handle pressure."

Mortaza was hopeful that Bangladesh will keep improving beyond his stint as the ODI captain. He repeated what he had said at his last press conference in the 2019 World Cup, that with many of the current young players reaching a peak in four years time, Bangladesh could make it to the last four of the next World Cup.

"It is hard to say but I believe Bangladesh will do well in the 2023 World Cup. I think I said it in the last press conference in England, after the Pakistan game, that we will play in the semi-final of the next World Cup. Most of the young players will have the peak of their career during that time, so there's no reason that we cannot reach that far in Asia."

When Liton Das crossed 158 in the third ODI against Zimbabwe on Friday with the crowd in Sylhet having a party, Bangladesh's highest individual score in ODIs was his property now. He got a big hug from Tamim Iqbal, the man who had set the record just two days ago. But it was also Iqbal, according to Das, who reminded him around the 120-run mark that the record was for his taking, and he shouldn't leave the chance. Das went on to finish on 176 off 143 balls that helped the hosts amass 322.

Das said that twice during their record 292-run opening stand, Iqbal's words motivated him greatly. The first was when they struggled to find singles for a brief period and Iqbal calmed down Das. And then when Das was on 120, Iqbal charged him up.

"When I was batting on 80, the bowlers were going through a good time," Das said after the game. "Neither of us could find the singles. Tamim bhai said that we can overcome this situation. We will get the runs and the boundaries, our batting will become normal. This was before my hundred. When I was around 120-122, I was going after the bowling. Tamim bhai reminded me that this was my chance to cross his highest score. 'Do something that will last for a long time', he told me."

Das said that despite the big-hitting finish to his innings, the thought of reaching a double-hundred never crossed his mind. He just reacted to the situations, particularly after the rain break when Bangladesh were 182 for 0 in the 34th over, and the match was reduced to 43 overs a side. Das scored his last 76 runs off just 29 balls, with the help of eight sixes and three fours.

"The double-hundred was never on my mind," Das said. "I wanted to bat till the 30th over but after the century the momentum of the match changed. I had to play my shots, and I was successful. There became a bit of a chance. As a batsman, I have the belief that if I can bat for 30 overs, I can get a hundred.

"It is one of my best knocks. I always performed at the domestic level, but there were problems at the international level. My playing style was different. I am working on it, but I am sure that I can do better in the future."

Mashrafe Mortaza, the outgoing captain who always banked on a good opening stand but had to work hard to find a better partner for Iqbal throughout his captaincy, said that Das is certainly reaching his peak as a batsman.

"I always love watching Virat Kohli and Liton Das," Mortaza said. "There's a lot of great players but as long as these two are at the wicket...I have told Liton for a long time. I believe that Liton can change the momentum of an innings, he can play an anchor role, and he can also play a big innings.

"I think that he has picked the momentum. He understands his game now. He has played for four years, and this is his peak time to score runs. His hundred in the Asia Cup final was his natural game."

Mortaza said that the first time he found confidence speaking to Das was couple of years ago in the West Indies when the young batsman was struggling to break into the playing XI. Mortaza had decided to give Anamul Haque a fair go to open with Iqbal, but Das stuck to his guns, and only wanted to open. It impressed Mortaza.

"Liton told me once, in West Indies when Bijoy (Anamul Haque) opened in all three games and he didn't get a game, that he wanted to bat in his best position. He had made runs in the practice game but we decided to stick with Bijoy in that whole series.

"Naturally, Liton was disappointed. But he told me that he if he fails at his preferred batting order, he would take the responsibility. We spoke for about 30 minutes, and it gave me confidence in him.

"I saw a young player taking responsibility, so I told him that next time whenever you bat for Bangladesh, I will make sure you open the innings."

A captain perennially worried about his batting line-up, and in particular the opening pair where only Iqbal has been consistent, Mortaza will be satisfied that by the time he finished as captain, Bangladesh at least had an exciting opening pair, and one that comes with a lot of promise.

Undrafted Robinson breaks multiple 3-point marks

Miami Heat sharpshooter Duncan Robinson broke multiple single-season 3-point records Friday night. And with 19 games left to play in the regular season, he's on pace to shatter them.

With three 3s in the first half against the New Orleans Pelicans, Duncan increased his total 3s made to 228. That's the most in Heat franchise history (Wayne Ellington, 227), the most by an undrafted player (Damon Jones, 225) and the most by any player in either of their first two NBA seasons.

Robinson, 25, is shooting 44.6% from 3 on 8.1 attempts per game. He's on pace to hit 296 3s this season, a feat accomplished only by Stephen Curry and James Harden.

Robinson played his freshman season in college at Division III Williams College before leaving for Michigan. He went undrafted in the 2018 draft and signed a summer-league deal with the Heat.

After playing in only 15 NBA games last season, he has worked his way into the likely playoff-bound Heat's starting lineup this season -- averaging 13 points in 29.6 minutes per game.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Orlando Magic coach Steve Clifford left Friday's game in Minnesota after falling ill and was taken to an area hospital for further evaluation.

Clifford "came down with an illness" during the third quarter, the team said.

Clifford was replaced by assistant coach Tyrone Corbin. The Magic went on to beat the Timberwolves 132-118.

In the men’s singles, the names to note in particular were those of Frenchman Bastien Rembert and Irvin Bertrand, alongside Moldova’s Andrei Putuntica, Hungary’s Csaba Andras, Russia’s Lev Katsman and Ioannis Sgouropoulos from Greece.

All ended the second phase of play unbeaten but of the top eight seeds the only member of that group to remain unscathed was Bastien Rembert, the no.2 seed; the other names had all competed in the initial phase of play.

Russia’s Vladimir Sidorenko, the top seed, Romania’s Rares Sipos, the no.3 seed and Frenchman Jules Rolland, the no.4 seed, all had to settle for second positions. Likewise, it was the same outcome for the Belgium duo of Florian Cnudde and Laurens Devos, the next in the order of merit, runners up spot was their lot.

Notably, Vladimir Sidorenko finished behind Leo de Nodrest; thus no less than four French players gained main draw places. A surprise first place for Leo de Nodrest, who had started proceedings the lowest rated in his second stage group, it was a position Serbia’s Dimitrije Levajac also held. He ended the day in second spot behind Bastien Rembert.

Unexpected second positions but they live to fight another day. Alas for Russia’s Denis Ivonin, the no.7 seed and Romania’s Cristian Pletea, the no.8 seed, it is the end of the line; third position was their lot. Denis Ivonin finished behind Ioannis Sgouropoulos and Germany’s Meng Fanbo; Cristian Pletea next in line to Gerritt Engemann, also from Germany and Russia’s Artur Abusev.

Players urged to limit fan contact due to virus

Published in Hockey
Friday, 06 March 2020 16:58

TORONTO -- The NHL has sent a memo to teams urging players to limit contact with fans because of the coronavirus outbreak.

NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly confirmed the league issued the memo in an email to The Canadian Press on Friday.

The move follows a similar directive this month by the NBA, which has told its players to stop high-fiving fans and strangers and to avoid taking items for autographs.

NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said Wednesday at the close of the annual general managers meetings in Florida that he has ordered a halt to all business-related travel outside North America for league employees.

And if an individual ends up in a location affected by the virus on their own, the NHL is mandating a two-week quarantine before that person can return to work.

The Ottawa Senators' road game against the San Jose Sharks on Saturday night remains on schedule despite a recommendation to cancel large gatherings in the county where the arena is located.

The Sharks encouraged fans to follow another suggestion from the Santa Clara County's Public Health Department, which recommends that "persons at higher risk avoid mass gatherings such as parades, sporting events and concerts where large numbers of people are within arm's length of one another."

The Sharks announced Friday that all events at SAP Center this weekend will go on as scheduled.

Annika Sorenstam and Gary Player will be awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom on March 23, the White House announced Friday.

President Donald J. Trump will present the honor in a ceremony.

Sorenstam and Player will join Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Charlie Sifford and Tiger Woods as the only golfers to receive the award.

Images from the Hall of Fame career of Annika Sorenstam, which included 10 major championships and eight LPGA Player of the Year awards.

The Presidential Medal of Freedom recognizes “an especially meritorious contribution to the security or national interests of the United States, world peace, cultural or other significant public or private endeavors.” The Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Congressional Gold Medal are the nation’s highest civilian awards.

Sorenstam, 49, won 72 LPGA titles, trailing only Kathy Whitworth (88) and Mickey Wright (82) as most in tour history. She won 10 major championships, trailing only Patty Berg (15), Mickey Wright (13) and Louise Suggs (11) as most in the history of women’s golf. Sorenstam won the LPGA’s Rolex Player of the Year Award eight times and the Vare Trophy for low scoring average six times. She’s the only woman to shoot 59 in LPGA history.

Player, 84, took pride taking the game around the world, winning 165 times around the globe, with 24 of those PGA Tour titles, nine of them major championships. He is one of just five men to win the career Grand Slam, joining Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods.
