Kyrie has surgery to fix shoulder impingement

Published in Basketball
Tuesday, 03 March 2020 10:19

Brooklyn Nets guard Kyrie Irving underwent arthroscopic surgery Tuesday to fix an impingement in his right shoulder.

Irving was ruled out for the season in February due to the injury that previously sidelined him for 26 games earlier in the season.

The 27-year-old star is expected to make a full recovery.

Irving averaged 27.4 points and 6.4 assists over 20 games in his first season in Brooklyn.

Pistons' Rose (ankle) out at least two weeks

The Detroit Pistons announced Tuesday that guard Derrick Rose will be out at least two weeks with a Grade 2 ankle sprain.

An MRI on Monday confirmed the sprain. Rose will begin treatment and will be evaluated in two weeks, the team said.

Rose injured the ankle Sunday in a loss to the Sacramento Kings.

The 2011 NBA MVP has been having a comeback season with the Pistons, averaging 18.1 points and 5.6 assists for the rebuilding team.

The problems behind Trae Young's signature plays

Published in Basketball
Monday, 02 March 2020 11:12

The future of the NBA is bright. The short list of emerging basketball superstars age 22 and under includes Luka Doncic, Ja Morant, Zion Williamson, Jayson Tatum and Trae Young. But while four of those guys are playing meaningful games right now, Young and his Atlanta Hawks teammates are careening toward the lottery.

Despite the fact that Young is putting up eye-popping numbers -- he ranks third in the NBA in scoring and second in assists -- his individual success hasn't been contagious. The Hawks are an atrocious 19-44, ranking 24th in offensive efficiency and 28th in defensive efficiency. If Young and the Hawks expect to be playing meaningful games at this point next season, they'll need to get a lot better on both ends of the floor.

Building a playoff team around Young is both an alluring and confounding architectural challenge. On one hand, you have to surround him with off-ball offensive threats that open the floor. Then you also need a fleet of defensive talent to compensate for his tremendous limitations.

The current Hawks roster doesn't do either. But the fact that the offense is so bad is most surprising, because their primary ball handler is one of the most talented young playmakers in the game. When Young is on the court, the Hawks score at league-average rates, putting up 111 points per 100, and that number surges up to 115 on possessions that begin with Young bringing up the ball. That's encouraging, especially considering Young leads the NBA in turnovers and his supporting cast is among the least experienced in the league.

That supporting cast absolutely collapses without Young. When Young sits, Atlanta scores only 94 points per 100 possessions, a number so low it's almost 10 points worse than the worst overall offense in the NBA, which belongs to what's left of the Golden State Warriors.

That gargantuan on/off differential demonstrates how potent Young's offense can be. When he's on the court he has the power to transform a hideous offense into an average one. Imagine if he had better teammates. But Young is not blameless here. The Hawks' defense is their biggest problem, and Young is a major component of that issue.

Looking at the data, the best two offenses in the NBA are the Dallas Mavericks and whichever team is playing against Young and the Hawks. Doncic and the Mavs lead the NBA by scoring 116.1 points per 100 possessions. When Young is on the court, Hawks opponents are also pouring in 116.1 per 100. Oof.

And just as Atlanta's offensive on/off numbers reveal how important Young is on that end of the floor, the team's defensive numbers have an opposite plotline. With Young on the bench, the Hawks' defensive rating is 106.8, which would rank just below the Clippers for sixth best in the NBA.

Young's sophomore scoring and assisting has silenced some of the haters from his rookie season. His offensive stats are ridiculous, and they're a boon for any team-building process looking forward into a decade where 3s will only become more central.

At first glance, his 3-point shooting efficiency is modest. He makes just 36% of his attempts, but when you consider the volume and difficulty of his shots, that number looks more impressive -- 77% of his 3-point tries are unassisted and his average 3-point shot distance this year is over 28 feet.

But while those deep-space triples may be his signature play, it's unclear if they are actually helping the Hawks win games. Here's where it gets interesting: When Young misses a 3-point shot, opponents should start licking their chops. Other teams turn Young's missed 3s into points at freakishly high rates.

Young misses 64% of his 3s, and opponents grab defensive boards on about 75% of those misses. On the ensuing possessions, as those defenses turn into offenses, they rack up a wild 127 points per 100 possessions, according to Second Spectrum tracking data. Folks, the league average offensive efficiency following a missed 3 is 112.

In other words, the Hawks play historically bad defense after their best player misses his signature shot. Here's a prime example from a January game against the Raptors. Young has just missed a deep 3, only to turn around and quickly get burnt on a baseline cut on the other end.

That's too easy, and these are the exact kinds of things that must change going forward if the Hawks are going to turn their young core into a contender.

So what exactly is going on here?

The Hawks struggle with every phase of the game, but their defensive awakening has to start with Young. Individual defense remains a difficult skill to quantify, but members of two separate teams told ESPN that their in-house models have pegged Young as one of the worst defenders in the league. Other publicly facing metrics like defensive real plus-minus concur, with Young ranking 493rd out of 495 players.

Part of this is youth -- young players struggle to play great defense, and young point guards are thrown right into the front lines, guarding the best playmakers on the planet at the point of attack. One night you're tasked with stopping Chris Paul, the next night you might have Kemba Walker, Damian Lillard or Kyle Lowry dying to make you look bad.

Part of this is effort. Defense requires equal parts athleticism, smarts and effort, and Young isn't bringing all three of those to the table right now. At this point it's fair to question whether he can ever play satisfactory defense in the NBA.

Young is 6-1 and 180 pounds -- one of the slightest rotation players in the league -- and it's that primitive limitation that hurts him the most on defense. He has no room for error, yet his effort doesn't reflect that reality. When he misses one of those go-to deep 3s, too often he takes it easy on the other end. Other times he's forced to act as the last line of defense because he's the last man back, and there's nothing he can do given his size. That's an issue.

In a league obsessed with pick-and-rolls, Young is simply not big enough or strong enough to fight through screens, and it shows up in the numbers. Among the 79 players with at least 600 such plays, he allows the sixth-most points per chance leaguewide when defending ball handlers in pick-and-roll, per Second Spectrum.

He's arguably one of the worst pick-and-roll defenders in the NBA. That's not good news for a front office charged with building a playoff team around him. He's not long enough to contest shots or clog up passing lanes. He's not bulky enough to rebound. He lacks the body to contain larger NBA guards.

But there are plenty of small NBA guards who still manage to play better defense than Young. Just look at the Oklahoma City Thunder, whose three main guards are all relatively small. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Paul (6-foot-1) and Dennis Schroder (6-1) all weigh 180 pounds or less, and when that trio is on the floor, OKC outscores opponents by 29.6 points per 100 possessions.

Fair or not, Young is the culture driver in Atlanta, and right now that story lacks a consistent character, especially on defense. While other NBA teams featuring young phenoms are currently busy writing exciting new postseason chapters, the Hawks are struggling with Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde-him-on-defense. Unless the defensive culture around the team suddenly changes, next year's chapter will be just as scary.

What fate lies ahead for Hugo Calderano in Doha?

Published in Table Tennis
Tuesday, 03 March 2020 07:17

There’s little doubting Hugo Calderano’s pedigree, he is after all the first player from the South American continent to secure a top 10 spot in the world rankings and only the third from the continent to secure a top eight finish at the Men’s World Cup.

However, Calderano’s association with the Qatar Open paints somewhat of a confusing picture!

He succumbed to an opening round exit in 2016, losing out to Italy’s Alessandro Baciocchi in a shock introduction to the tournament.

Not present in 2017 but in 2018 Calderano experienced completely opposite emotions to his previous outing in Doha, defying expectations with victory over Timo Boll and Lin Gaoyuan on his way to a sensational runner-up finish!

Incredible display

Following his incredible display at the 2018 Qatar Open surely another successful outing awaited one year later? The answer was no! Meeting Cédric Nuytinck at the first hurdle, Calderano was best 4-2 by the Belgian qualifier.

Truly Calderano’s previous with the Qatar Open leaves more questions than answers so what lies ahead for the Brazilian superstar at this year’s event?

Positioned at no.6 in the men’s singles seeding list, Calderano’s 2020 Qatar Open campaign commences on Thursday 5th March when the main draw commences but chances are he’ll have to be at his best right from the word go!

Difficult task

Competing alongside some of the sport’s biggest names, a second round exit at the hands of Sweden’s Kristian Karlsson two weeks ago in Hungary, Calderano is undoubtedly set for a tremendously difficult outing in his search for glory. However, for a player who is used to surpassing expectations, the 23-year-old never backs down from a challenge and will give it his best shot in Doha.

What fate awaits Hugo Calderano in Doha? Another round one exit? Another run all the way to the final perhaps? Or maybe something new altogether!

Former England winger Chris Ashton left Sale after a "difference of opinion" with director of rugby Steve Diamond.

The 32-year-old left the Sharks on Monday after agreeing to terminate his contract early.

Diamond told BBC North West Tonight: "We had a difference of opinion really, me and my coaching staff think we are on the right trajectory and doing things right.

"We had a disagreement about various things."

He added: "We didn't want to fall out over it but the best thing is to part company.

"It is a bit of a shame but these things happen. We have to put it bed quickly and move on."

Diamond is confident that his side, who are second in the Premiership, will not be unduly affected by Ashton's departure.

"We've got Marland Yarde, Byron McGuigan, Denny Solomona, Arron Reed, Tom Roebuck - plenty of players," he said.

"We've got a squad good enough to cope with one or two people coming and going."

Ashton, the Premiership's third-highest ever try-scorer with 86, has been linked with a move to Harlequins.

Harlequins scrum-half Danny Care on BBC Radio 5 Live's Rugby Union Weekly Podcast

I saw the news and got on the phone to see how he was. You see that and think something big has happened.

He is going to come on the podcast and tell everyone about it next week. He is currently looking for a club.

He is fine. It is not a wage-cap issue, it is not a misdemeanour issue, just him and the club have decided to part ways and he is now on the market. I'm pretty sure a lot of clubs will be after him.

I may have stoked the fires a little bit with the picture [below]. It's ruffled a few feathers. People enjoy a bit of a transfer saga. It's big news.

He hasn't gone in there and demanded to leave. This isn't him pushing a move to somewhere else. He is genuinely now without a club. The one thing about him, he can't sit still. He wants to play and do the thing he is best at so he very much wants to get back to somewhere very soon and play some rugby.

England prop Mako Vunipola has gone into self-isolation as a coronavirus precaution and will not face Wales in the Six Nations on Saturday.

Vunipola was named in a 34-man squad on Monday but the Rugby Football Union (RFU) said he did not come into camp after travelling through Hong Kong on his return from Tonga over the weekend.

"Mako is not in camp on medical grounds," said an RFU spokesperson.

"He is not sick but it is a precaution."

Vunipola missed England's victory over Ireland on 23 February after flying to Tonga for family reasons.

But his return flight took him through virus-hit Hong Kong, and he has now gone into an isolation period.

It is believed Vunipola has shown no symptoms of the illness, with his absence from the England set-up a precaution.

Travellers returning from areas where the virus is prevalent are being asked to self-isolate if they have symptoms. Those in self-isolation should stay at home for 14 days.

He is therefore unlikely to be available for England's Six Nations finale against Italy in Rome, which is due to go ahead as planned on Saturday, 14 March.

Ireland's game against Italy has been postponed because of coronavirus, but Six Nations organisers said on Monday that the rest of the weekend's fixtures were currently set to go ahead.

Ronny Adams Memorial Opens Super Dirt Series Season

Tuesday, 03 March 2020 07:20

CONWAY, Ark. – The COMP Cams Super Dirt Series presented by Lucas Oil launches into the new campaign this weekend, March 6-7, with the inaugural Ronny Adams Memorial at Boothill Speedway.

Friday’s program is highlighted by a complete $3,000-to-win/$400-to-start program for the CCSDS competitors. Meanwhile, Saturday night’s event is capped with a complete $7,000-to-win/$500-to-start event.

Additionally, on Saturday night TNT Pick-A-Part is sponsoring a $500 bonus to one lucky competitor. The extra money will go to a driver finishing somewhere from 10th-20th in the feature. A drawing by a fan will determine the lucky recipient.

“This is a great way for our series to open the 2020 season. It’s an honor to be a part of an event that salutes the memory of such a well-respected and accomplished racer,” CCSDS CEO Chris Sullivan said. “Additionally, these are two great purses for the racers, and the fans get the opportunity to see two great shows.”

Veteran racer Ronny Adams died on Aug. 10, 2019 after a short battle with cancer. During his 51-year career the Texas native raced to 589 career wins, including 14 track championships at Boothill Speedway and nine Louisiana State Championships.

After claiming his first CCSDS title in 2019, Louisiana native Timothy Culp is primed and loaded for another championship run in 2020. However, the task of going back-to-back for the driver, who opens the season as the Midwest Sheet Metal Marked Man, is going to be far from easy as a plethora of both returning and new tour regulars have tossed their names into the ring for 2020.

Returning drivers to the tour include Brian Rickman, B.J. Robinson, Morgan Bagley, Kyle Beard, Scott Crigler, Hunter Rasdon, Chad Mallett, and David Payne. In fact, nine of the top-10 drivers from a year ago have confirmed their return to the series in 2020.

A host of fresh faces plan to dot the CCSDS landscape as well. Perspective full-timers, who are looking to compete on the full tour for the first time, currently include Logan Martin, Kaeden Cornell, Colton Horner, Jeff Roth, Joe Godsey, Drew Armstrong, Brett Frazier, Michael Coldwell, Spencer Hughes and Jamie Elam.

With several new drivers voicing an intent to run the series in 2020, the Midwest Sheet Metal Rookie of the Year battle is shaping up to be the best yet. Currently more than half a dozen racers have shown an interest in the program.

Additionally, the CCSDS contingent will likely face adversity this weekend with a strong cast of regional and national independent drivers, who are looking to capitalize on the big weekend payouts.

The weekend opens with an open practice session on Thursday, March 5. Factory Stocks and Limited Modifieds will join the program on Friday and Saturday. On Friday both divisions will contest heat races, while Saturday will see each class battling in $1,000-to-win/$100-to-start finales. Additionally, Pro Mods will run a complete $400-to-win/$50-to-start program on Saturday.

On Friday and Saturday adult grandstand admission is $20 each night. Children (ages 5-and-under) are free in the grandstands. Pit passes are $20 on Thursday, and $35 on both Friday and Saturday.

On Thursday the gates open at 4 p.m. with practice beginning at 6 p.m. On Friday the gates open at 5 p.m. with the draw ending at 7:15 p.m., hot laps at 7:30 p.m. and racing action at 8 p.m. Saturday’s program includes gates opening at 4 p.m. with the draw ending at 6:15 p.m., hot laps at 6:30 p.m. and racing action at 7 p.m.

Sebring – One of Florida’s Most Prominent Events

SEBRING, Fla. – Springtime in Florida attracts many significant sporting events and festivals, but few have the international acclaim of the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring Presented by Advance Auto Parts.

In addition to Sebring’s signature event on March 21, no sporting facility in Florida, and perhaps the world, will be as active as Sebring Int’l Raceway in the first three months of 2020. Long known as one of the most active racing facilities in the world, of the 91 days from Jan. 1 to March 31, only seven will not include cars racing or testing on track at Sebring – and the majority of those days are set aside for track preparation.

In its traditional third weekend of March spot, in the midst of other highly attended events including PGA Tour tournaments, Major League Baseball Spring Training games, NASCAR and IndyCar races, as well as dozens of festivals and concerts, racing at Sebring Int’l Raceway March 18-21 will draw headlines for newspapers and broadcast networks around the world who follow international car racing.

In 2019 the 12-Hour classic was named the No. 1 motorsports event in North America by a fan vote conducted by USA Today.  Other world-class events included the Daytona 500, the Rolex 24 At Daytona and the Indianapolis 500.  A worldwide audience will be able to watch the broadcast of the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring through live coverage on NBC Sports networks, and a world feed of the WEC 1000 Miles of Sebring will expose the area to millions of followers of that series.

More than 130 professional racing teams are expected to compete in four races over the weekend – each team will include a minimum of 10 crew members, drivers and team principals.  Some teams will include as many as 30-40 crew members.

“Sebring is very high on the list of motorsports events with global interest,” said Wayne Estes, Sebring Int’l Raceway president and general manager.  “When you talk to people with ties to the racing industry, Sebring, Daytona, Le Mans and Indianapolis are the venues that are most often discussed.  We often joke that maybe more people from Europe know about Sebring than those from Orlando, Tampa or Lakeland.  Regardless, during March the population of Sebring is multiplied several times over with attendees who patronize businesses and spend money throughout Florida.  What was once one of Florida’s best-kept entertainment secrets is quickly becoming a must ‘must-see’ event even for casual motorsports fans.”

As every year since 1952, gates will open at Sebring at 6 a.m. on Wednesday of race week (March 18) and will remain open around the clock through Sunday.  Guests have already started lining up outside the Raceway in order to be among the first to claim their spot in unreserved parking areas inside the facility.  All reserved trackside parking spaces are sold out, as are many premium fan hospitality options and all corporate hospitality.  Only the brand-new Celebrity Cruises Luxury Lounge has limited fan hospitality still available.

The defending champion of IMSA’s Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring Presented by Advance Auto Parts is the Action Express Whelen Engineering Cadillac from the United States.  The No. 31 Cadillac will again be driven by three-time 12-Hour champion Pipo Derani who will be joined again by Felipe Nasr Filipe Albuquerque.

The FIA WEC 1000 Miles of Sebring was dominated in 2019 by the Toyota Gazoo Racing team which will defend its title with drivers Sebastien Buemi, Kazuki Nakajima and Brendon Hartley on March 20.

On March 19 CarBahn with Peregrine Racing’s No. 39 Audi R8 will defend its 2019 Alan Jay Automotive Network 120 IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge victory with drivers Jeff Westphal and Tyler McQuarrie, while earlier that day the No. 10 Robillard Racing team with drivers Stevan McAleer and Joe Robillard will attempt to go back-to-back in the IMSA Prototype Challenge.

DENSO Renews Support Of Angie & Matt Smith

Published in Racing
Tuesday, 03 March 2020 08:43

LONG BEACH, Calif. – DENSO Products and Services Inc., an affiliate of leading global automotive supplier DENSO Corp., is returning as the primary sponsor of NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle racers Angie and Matt Smith.

The new season marks the third consecutive year DENSO has supported the husband-and-wife teammates after first sponsoring Angie Smith in 2017.

Pro Stock Motorcycle racing kicks off March 12-15 at Gainesville Raceway in Florida, the third race in the 24-weekend NHRA schedule. After ending the 2019 season in the top 10 and with DENSO’s continued backing, the Smiths are eager to vie for this year’s championship over the next nine months.

“I’m ready to get after it in Gainesville. Winning the championship in 2018 and being in the thick of the final battle until the last day of 2019 has lit a fire under all of us at Matt Smith Racing,” said Matt Smith, who finished the 2019 season in third placeand set the sport’s national speed record of 201.76 mph in Gainesville last year. “With DENSO’s support over the last few years, we’ve taken our whole racing program to the next level and our DENSO EBR is the one to beat.”

“Our relationship with DENSO gets stronger every year, and it’s a true testament to the loyalty we have together,” said Angie Smith, who finished the 2019 season in eighth place overall and spent the offseason preparing for this year’s challenge. “I am more confident than ever that my pink DENSO EBR will be in the winner’s circle. Our team has had zero failures since we’ve been using DENSO’s Iridium spark plugs, and that speaks volumes about the quality of DENSO products on the racetrack and the roadway.”

Both born and raised in North Carolina, the Smiths have been fierce competitors for decades dating back to the time she raced under her maiden name, Angie McBride. Matt invited her to join his team in 2008, and the couple married in 2009. They are the only husband-and-wife teammates in the NHRA.

In addition to sponsoring Angie and Matt Smith, DENSO is the title sponsor of the DENSO NHRA Four-Wide Nationals April 3-5 at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. DENSO has served as the title sponsor of the weekend race and a supporting sponsor of the entire NHRA Mello Yello Series for the last four years and will continue as title sponsor of the Four-Wide Nationals in Las Vegas through 2021.
