Report: Islanders to play at Coliseum next season

Published in Hockey
Friday, 28 February 2020 14:27

The New York Islanders are expected to play their entire 2020-21 home slate at Nassau Coliseum, Newsday reported Friday.

Nassau Coliseum, which is located in Uniondale on Long Island, also would host all potential Islanders home playoff games this year, per Newsday.

New York Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo is expected to officially announce the news Saturday ahead of the Isles' home game against the Boston Bruins.

The Islanders have split time between Nassau Coliseum and Barclays Center this season, with 28 games set to be played on Long Island and 13 in Brooklyn by regular season's end.

The team is expected to move to a 19,000-seat arena at Belmont Park for the 2021-22 season. Work on that $1.3 billion arena began last September.

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. – Michael Thompson quietly owned the Bear Trap.

Nobody had played it better since the Honda Classic moved to PGA National in 2007. It wasn’t even close.

In 29 times around the Champions Course, he had never hit a ball in the water through the Bear Trap. That’s more than pretty good, with all the water around that treacherous trio of holes, with all the wind that typically howls across them, and with all the drunken fans who like to heckle from the party pavilions amid them.

Nobody else has ever played more than 14 rounds without hitting a shot in the water through there.

But Thompson’s streak finally ended Friday.

He hit a 7-iron into the water at the 15th, the Bear Trap’s opening hole.

“I was aware of the streak,” Thompson said after his round. “That’s why I hit it in the water.”

Thompson won the Honda Classic in 2013, but he said until this year, nobody seemed to know how perfect he was through the Bear Trap. For whatever reason, fans and friends saw the published stat this year.

“Nobody had ever really mentioned it to me before,” Thompson said. “This week, people were calling it out. Nobody was trying to do any harm. They were just having fun.”

So, Thompson said, his focus wasn’t where he wanted it when he teed it up at the 15th.

“I was thinking about that stat instead of the shot,” he said.

And he blocked a 7-iron right, into the water.

The Bear Trap is one of the toughest three-hole stretches on the PGA Tour, and it's back in the spotlight at this week's Honda Classic.

“I’ve been out here long enough that I’m pretty good at blocking something out, but now and then, it will get to me,” Thompson said. “I just kind of came out of the shot.”

His reaction when the ball splashed down?

“I was saying every four-letter word I knew to myself,” Thompson said. “I was pretty ticked off.”

Thompson made double bogey at the 15th but went on to play himself within the cutline.

“I’m proud of my record through there,” Thompson said. “I think the reason I’ve been so successful is that I don’t play those holes as aggressively as most guys. I keep it as simple as possible, in terms of picking out a target and committing to the shot. I think a 20- to 30-foot putt on any of those holes is good, and that thinking has led to some pretty good golf around here. I’m thankful for that.”

Golf can be brutal at times. When they say it's a game of inches, that's no joke.

Just ask Brendan Steele.

In the field this week at the Honda Classic, Steele had it going Friday heading to the famed and difficult Bear Trap at PGA National. Had you told Steele prior to the round he would walk away with a tap-in birdie at the par-3 15th, he probably would have gladly taken that and moved on. But it's how he got that tap-in that makes it so excruciating.

It really doesn't get much more brutal than that, especially with a new car on the line.

Steele would go on to play the Bear Trap at 1 under, dropping a shot at the par-4 16th after finding a greenside bunker. Still, Steele put together a 3-under 67 to take the lead in South Florida.

Trio of Englishmen giving Honda Classic star-power spark

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. – Europeans helped put the shine back on the Honda Classic when the tournament was struggling to rebuild its marquee and bring back the game’s biggest stars.

Maybe it’s only fair the event returns the favor now.

England’s Lee Westwood and Luke Donald took turns holding down the world No. 1 ranking back in 2010, ’11 and ’12.

They were among a growing European contingent that was making the Honda Classic the start of its Masters preparation.

It was a huge boost to the sagging South Florida event’s craving for more star power.

Now, with Westwood continuing his climb back up the world rankings, and with Donald looking to continue his rebound from a back injury, these 40-somethings are looking to take advantage of opportunities at PGA National this weekend.

So is yet another Englishman, Tommy Fleetwood, who put himself in position Friday to try to win his first PGA Tour title.

Westwood’s 1-under 69 and Donald’s 66 moved them one shot behind the leader, Brendan Steele, going into the weekend. Fleetwood’s 68 left him just three shots back.

At 46, Westwood won the Abu Dhabi Championship last month, his 25th European Tour title. He’s seeking his third PGA Tour title.

“Lee has obviously proven that age is just a number,” Donald said. “He's been playing great lately. I've had a little bit of a lean period the last couple years, but just seeing those guys continue to grind and continue to fight and do well, it's nice to see, and, certainly, it motivates me.”

Westwood asked Honda Classic executive director Ken Kennerly for a sponsor’s exemption to this week’s event. Kennerly happily granted it, repaying Westwood for the boosts he gave the Honda Classic.

“I've played a lot of Hondas,” Westwood said. “It’s a golf course I feel comfortable on. Whenever you get on a golf course you're familiar with, and you're comfortable with, it always helps.”

Fleetwood, 29, is a five-time European Tour winner seeking his first PGA Tour title.

Howard: I cried after '09 heroics vs. Man United

Published in Soccer
Friday, 28 February 2020 15:46

Former Everton and Manchester United goalkeeper Tim Howard said he "cried real tears" after his match-winning performance in 2009 FA Cup semifinal between the two clubs.

Howard was in goal for Everton on that day, just three seasons removed from having played for Manchester United. After normal and extra-time finished goalless, he saved two penalties in the shootout that followed to send the Toffees into the final against Chelsea.

"I cried real tears after that game," said Howard via telephone. "It was very much slaying the dragon if you will. It probably wasn't as much for anyone else, but when things didn't work out at Man United, and I had to move on, I had a lot to prove. And that to me was a day that was incredibly poetic. It was simply a way for me to close that chapter and move forward."

Howard had some successes with Manchester United, including an FA Cup winners medal in 2004. But when Edwin van der Saar was signed prior to the 2005-06 season, that spelled the end of Howard's time at Old Trafford. He was loaned to Everton ahead of that campaign, making the matchups with his former club tense affairs.

"I have a lot of fond memories from Man United, but I'm an Evertonian through and through, and I remember those games being really nerve-wracking for me, coming from Man United and having to play against them," he said. "Obviously they were giants and we're trying to slay them all those years. When I look at the 10 years I had at Everton, we had some incredible battles."

Sunday's match between the two sides will mark the first time that Howard has returned to Goodison Park since the 2015-16 season, when following a difficult season he departed Everton to sign for the Colorado Rapids. He left the Toffees having made over 400 appearances for the club. But looking back, Howard admitted that it was time for him to move on.

"It was good to get away," he said. "It was probably by design somewhat, but also I was incredibly busy. For me it was such a perfect ending to my Everton career that I almost felt as if I needed the time away because it was so perfect."

Howard's return coincides with him being named an international ambassador for the club, a role that he is happy to take on.

"When I left the club, I was always going to come back in some capacity," he said. "This is my home, this is the club that I love and hold dear in my heart. I was forever an Evertonian, but to continue in an official capacity is pretty special and when it comes to my duties, I basically told them, 'Use me how you'd like.' I can never say no to this club."

Can Sarri rally Juventus before it's too late?

Published in Soccer
Friday, 28 February 2020 01:11

The first warning sign came in the prematch warm-up at the Groupama stadium in Lyon, France. Leonardo Bonucci did not like what he was seeing.

The intensity he expects, particularly on a Champions League night, was missing from Juventus' backups. To his mind, they were too casual, and he didn't hesitate to tell them in front of a crowd of 60,000 fans. When the game kicked off, the Juventus starting XI did not set a much better example. Adrien Rabiot wasted a 3-on-2 on the counterattack and never recovered. Passive defending from Rodrigo Bentancur allowed Karl Toko Ekambi to get in front of him and head an effort against the crossbar. An errant pass from Juan Cuadrado started an attack for Moussa Dembele that, lucky for the Colombia international, ended with the former Fulham and Celtic striker shooting over the bar. A misunderstanding between Miralem Pjanic and Bonucci let Toko Ekambi in again.

Despite several errors, Juventus can attribute the goal they did concede, which sends them back to Turin for the second leg down 1-0 on aggregate in their last-16 clash, down to bad luck. Matthijs de Ligt was off the pitch receiving treatment for a head injury when Lyon made full use of the extra man and scored what turned out to be the winner.

- Inter vs. Juventus to be played behind closed doors

The Italian side is right to question the referee's decision not to grant Cristiano Ronaldo or Paulo Dybala a penalty in the second half, but truth be told, Juve only have themselves to blame for taking an hour to get the measure of Lyon and find something close to a groove. Extenuating circumstances like Giorgio Chiellini's presence in the stands rather than on the pitch and Pjanic's lack of match fitness in his return from injury only go so far in excusing a first-half performance -- zero shots on goal -- that must rank as the worst of the season.

This had been coming.

Juventus have not played well enough over the past month to inspire confidence that Wednesday's trip to Lyon would be a piece of cake, and even when they have played well this season, the number of one-goal wins (16) mean it has rarely been comfortable.

The team is supposed to peak in February. It's designed that way, in a sense: The medical staff has made more or less everybody available in time, with Merih Demiral the only first-team player not on the short flight across the Alps. New concepts should be assimilated by now, too. Juve fans don't expect to hear embattled coach Maurizio Sarri say: "I'm having difficulty getting the idea across to the team that they need to pass the ball quickly." That will wash in August and September. It won't at this stage of the campaign.

Juventus vs. Inter Milan to be played behind closed doors

Gab Marcotti shares the latest on how the coronavirus is affecting games played in Italy.

So much more was expected of Sarri when he was appointed manager last summer. The fans, used to dominating Serie A, could appreciate that he needed time. The team is transitioning to a style diametrically opposed to the one it has played over the past five years. But here's the thing: Juventus have lost a lot of the qualities associated with them under Massimiliano Allegri without gaining many of the ones that spring to mind when we think about Sarri.

Recently, Sarri has suggested that opinions of Juventus' performances would be different if they'd been a little luckier in front of goal. They struck the woodwork a total of seven times against SPAL, Brescia and Verona combined, but reflecting on those chances, a couple of things stand out. They are either moments of individual brilliance from Ronaldo and Dybala, or they come from set pieces. They are not missing the final touch following fluent patterns of play or truly cohesive football.

Sarri has explained underwhelming league displays away as being a consequence of his players finding it hard to get up for Serie A games, particularly against the smaller teams, having won the Scudetto unchallenged for almost a decade. Aside from the Derby d'Italia in October, Juve's best performances for the most part have been reserved for the Champions League, where they qualified top of their group with two games to spare for the first time in their history. Sarri put that down to the players caring more about it and raising their game accordingly.

So what happened in Lyon, then? And how come it followed the trend of recent weeks? It would suggest this isn't a simple a case of whether the players fancy it or not. It goes deeper than that.

The defence is porous by Juventus standards. They haven't kept a clean sheet on the road in almost three months and have won just one of their past five away games. Letting in the odd extra goal would be acceptable if the attack was firing on all cylinders; instead, it ranks fourth in the league and is Ronaldo-dependent.

All is not lost, though. Juventus are still top of the league, one point above Lazio (and two above Inter) with 13 games left. The second leg of their Coppa Italia semifinal next Wednesday -- stream live in the U.S. on ESPN+, 2:30 p.m. ET -- is at home in the Allianz Stadium, and Milan will be without the suspended Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Theo Hernandez, their two best players. Coming back against Atletico this time last year also represented a much more daunting task than overturning a one-goal defeat against a Lyon side that would be 11th in Ligue 1 were it not for the better goal difference they enjoy over Reims, Montpellier, Nice and Nantes.

That said, Sunday's Derby d'Italia -- stream live on ESPN+, 2:35 p.m. ET (U.S. only) -- with Inter keeps the pressure on. Losing to Antonio Conte on his return to Turin would further complicate life, and job security, for Sarri. Earlier this week, Juventus president Andrea Agnelli said the club is happy with its new manager, and the three-year contract he was given in the summer showed an appreciation that it would take a long time for "Sarrismo" to take hold of the Old Lady. The environment around the club, however, is more restless than rational, and Sarri faces two challenges: improving performances and keeping a skeptical fan base on his side.

New Zealand chose to bowl v India

New Zealand won their second toss of the series, and asked India to bat on a green Hagley Oval pitch after a rain-enforced delayed start to play. The last time New Zealand lost a home Test after winning the toss was way back in 2009.

If that was a daunting statistic for India, they needed to beat those odds with their best bowler from last week sitting out. Ishant Sharma sprained his ankle again, one Test into what was a miraculous, ahead-of-time recovery from a grade-three tear. Umesh Yadav replaced him. That also weakened India's lower-order batting, which meant Ravindra Jadeja replaced R Ashwin as the only spinner in India's XI.

New Zealand didn't bother with a spinner at all. Neil Wagner was back after his paternity leave, but New Zealand didn't want to leave out Kyle Jamieson, who had a great debut in Wellington. Ajaz Patel missing out for Wagner was the only change for New Zealand.

Police: Student joyrides on ATV damage LSU field

Published in Breaking News
Friday, 28 February 2020 15:50

The field at LSU's Tiger Stadium incurred thousands of dollars of damage after a student allegedly took a pair of joyrides in an ATV, according to police.

Clayton Fleetwood, 19, is accused of breaking into the football stadium on two different nights and both times taking a Kawasaki MULE ATV parked inside and driving it on the field, which was under construction.

He was arrested Thursday and charged with simple burglary, criminal trespassing and unauthorized use of a movable. Police later also arrested Thomas English, 18, on the burglary and movable charges, as well as Cathrine Nowery, 20, on the trespassing and movable charges.

A police report obtained by The Advocate says Fleetwood and English were captured on video surveillance late at night on Jan. 21, and that Fleetwood returned with Nowery on Feb. 8.

"It should be noted the field was under construction and without grass, and just had a new drainage system installed," the police report said. "[Fleetwood's] use of the ATV on the field area caused enough ruts/damage to require the precision grading to be repeated."

Repeating that grading will cost $8,000, LSU contractors said, according to The Advocate.

LSU, which won the College Football Playoff National Championship game last month, begins its spring football program on March 7, with a scrimmage at Tiger Stadium scheduled for April 18.

364-lb OT Becton has combine abuzz after 5.1 40

Published in Breaking News
Friday, 28 February 2020 15:05

INDIANAPOLIS -- Two things in a 40-yard dash at the NFL's scouting combine will raise plenty of eyebrows and bring plenty double takes from those in the stands at Lucas Oil Stadium.

The first is rare speed, the kind of speed Alabama wide receiver Henry Ruggs III showed Thursday night.

And then there is big-man speed like Louisville tackle Mekhi Becton flashed Friday night. Becton, who is the biggest player at this year's combine having checked in at 6-foot-7⅜ and 364 pounds, put up an official 5.10 clocking in the 40-yard dash.

According to ESPN Stats & Information research, Becton is the heaviest player to run a sub-5.2 40-yard dash at the combine since 2006. Former Memphis nose tackle Dontari Poe has the fastest big-man 40 over the past 15 years; he ran a 4.98 40-yard dash at the 2012 combine after weighing in at 346 pounds.

Iowa's Tristan Wirfs also had a notable effort on Friday, as the 320-pound offensive tackle put up a vertical jump of 36.5 inches -- the best by any offensive lineman at the combine since 2006. He topped Morgan State tackle Joshua Miles' jump of 36 inches at last year's combine.

Wirfs' vertical topped combine efforts by DeAndre Hopkins (36 inches), A.J. Green (34.5) and Amari Cooper (33) from previous years, and was better than the vertical leap of 26 wide receivers who worked out Thursday at the combine.

Wirfs also ran a 4.86 (unofficial) 40-yard dash, which would be the fastest by any player at least 320 pounds since 2006. The previous fastest was 4.92 by offensive lineman Greg Robinson in 2014.

Wirfs' broad jump of 10 feet, 1 inch was also a combine record for offensive linemen.

Fresno State's Netane Muti, a native of Tonga who played high school football in Hawaii, had 44 repetitions of 225 pounds in the bench press, tied for fourth most in combine history.

Becton did not participate in the position drills with the rest of the offensive linemen after his 40-yard dash Friday and had some ice on his leg. But his athleticism is a drawing card for him given scouts have already circulated Becton's basketball highlights from his high school career, in which Becton is repeatedly dunking the ball.

He is the top tackle on the board for many teams because of his size, athleticism and his willingness to finish blocks.

"It's just fun seeing a man on the ground every play and then going to jump on him,'' Becton said in Indianapolis earlier this week. "That's what I love about the game ... I feel I'm the most dominant tackle in this draft. You wouldn't go wrong picking me.''

Becton has said he expects whatever team selects him in the April draft to ask him to lose weight and said his goal is to eventually play at about 350 or 355 pounds, and that he played at 352 pounds this past season.

"They definitely want me to lose [weight], Becton said. "I'm willing to lose weight. Whatever they want me to do ... I think that was what everyone was looking for. The weight. To see if I came in heavy or not. I feel I had a great weight.''

Rockets sign Jeff Green for rest of season

The Houston Rockets signed power forward Jeff Green for the remainder of the season, the team announced Friday.

Green joined the Rockets earlier this month on a 10-day contract and has played in four games for Houston, averaging 9.8 points and 3.5 rebounds in 19.3 minutes off the bench.

He became a free agent in late December when the Utah Jazz waived him from his one-year deal signed in July.

Green has career averages of 13.0 points and 4.4 rebounds per game while playing for nine franchises, including seven over the past five seasons.
