Arsenal ousted after shock late Olympiakos goal

Published in Soccer
Thursday, 27 February 2020 15:46

Youssef El Arabi's last-gasp goal in added extra time helped Olympiakos pull off a major upset and oust Arsenal from the Europa League.

El Arabi's strike in the 2-1 win on Thursday at the Emirates secured the Greek side's passage to the competition's last-16 on away goals after Arsenal's 1-0 win in the first leg.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored a stellar scissor-kick goal in the 113th minute to seemingly put Arsenal through, but El Arabi's game-winner six minutes later left the London club stunned.

Pape Abou Cisse's goal in the second half gave Olympiakos a lifeline to set up the epic ending after the sides went into halftime scoreless.

But the Greek side then came out the break strong, with Cisse getting on the scoreboard in the 53rd minute with a header from Mathieu Valbuena's corner-kick.

Arsenal upped their urgency as the match wore on including solid efforts by Alexandre Lacazette, but the second half concluded without a goal from the hosts.

Until Aubameyang's score, Arsenal controlled possession but couldn't manage to put the ball in the net. Olympiakos forward Georgios Masouras had a great chance when his curling shot from outside the box rattled Bernd Leno's crossbar.

But it wasn't meant to be for English side, as El Arabi found space and directed the ball past Leno from Masouras' deep cross.

Ole: I thought I'd die before seeing Fred score

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer joked that he thought he might never see Fred score for Manchester United before the midfielder's double against Club Brugge.

The Brazil international scored the fourth and fifth goals as United beat the Belgian side 5-0 at Old Trafford on Thursday to secure a place in the Europa League last 16.

Fred has not scored since September 2018 and Solskjaer admits he was beginning to think it might never happen.

"I wasn't sure if I was gonna be alive the next time he scored a goal," laughed Solskjaer.

"It's been an ongoing joke between us of course, but he got that goal. I'm very pleased with him."

As well as Fred's brace, Scott McTominay and Bruno Fernandes also scored while there was a first United goal for deadline day signing Odion Ighalo.

It was a well-timed contribution for the Nigerian, who may have to start again against Everton at Goodison Park on Sunday after Anthony Martial failed a fitness test on Thursday morning.

"He went off in training," said Solskjaer.

"He had treatment, he tried [to play against Brugge]. He reported and had a fitness test. It's his thigh, it's in and around the knee."

Lacazette 3/10 as Arsenal crash out of Europa League

It was a Greek tragedy at the Emirates stadium, as Olympiakos shocked Arsenal at the end of extra time to win 2-1 on the night and advance via away goals to the Europa League's last 16. It was Youssef El Arabi who bundled home the winner in injury time during the second half of extra time, to knock Arsenal out of the competition and spark absolute scenes in the away end.

It is Arsenal's first defeat of 2020, who thought they had won it when a moment of magic from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang gave them a 2-1 lead in extra time. The Gabon striker scored with an acrobatic overhead kick, his 20th goal of the season, and later had a gilt-edged chance to win it after Olympiakos had scored, inexplicably missing from inside the 6-yard box after a fortunate bounce landed the ball at his feet.

Imposing defender Pape Abou Cisse nodded the visitors ahead on the night with a powerful header in the 63rd minute, and though Arsenal had chances to win it in normal time, they were too static and slow to move the ball and ultimately were punished for it.

Positives

Nicolas Pepe and Bukayo Saka both impressed. Pepe was the brightest attacking presence and looked dangerous with the ball at his feet. Saka was a constant menace on the left, but he just didn't see enough of the ball.

Negatives

Mikel Arteta will be frustrated by Arsenal's lack of tempo. There was a lack of movement, too, while the Gunners were wasteful in possession. Again, Olympiakos exposed their vulnerability from set pieces and were allowed to grow into the game. They switched off at the death when they needed to keep it tight.

Manager rating out of 10

5 -- Arteta fielded his strongest side and his most attacking formation, but Arsenal simply never got going. They enjoyed the best of the first half but created little, and while fans expected a fast start in the second half, they didn't get it. He probably could and should have introduced Gabriel Martinelli earlier to try and inject some pace into a lacklustre attack, but the introduction of Lucas Torreira did at least end the visitors' attacking threat towards the end.

Player ratings (1-10, 10 = best; players introduced after 70 minutes get no rating)

GK Bernd Leno, 5 -- Leno was a bystander in the first half, his first "save" was from a tame daisy-cutter five minutes before the break. He could do little about the first Olympiakos goal, but he saved well at full stretch from a curling goal-bound effort. He made a mistake with his feet that resulted in the corner ahead of Olympiakos' decider.

DF Hector Bellerin, 4 -- Bellerin showed good attacking intent at times. He made a good run from his own half in the first 10 minutes, though later in the half he left his defence exposed, leaving Olympiakos with a shooting opportunity. He was substituted as he tired.

DF Shkodran Mustafi, 7 -- Mustafi has been in fine form recently and was again solid at the back, doing well to block a shot by throwing his body in front of the ball on the half-hour mark. He also made a crucial block at the death, picking up a knock for his troubles.

DF David Luiz, 5 -- A quiet game for the Brazilian. His highlight was a nifty turn on 22 minutes which drew warm applause from the Emirates crowd. He did well to cover when Bellerin was exposed, but the Brazilian was then guilty of not picking up Cisse's run -- after he'd left Ozil for dead -- for the visitors' opener and then failed to deal with the cross that resulted in the winner.

DF Bukayo Saka, 6 -- Saka had a quiet start but on one occasion in the first half tracked back well to thwart an Olympiakos attack. He rarely gave the ball away, and he thought he'd added his 11th assist in 11 games when he crossed perfectly across the face of goal for Lacazette to finish from close range, only for the goal to be disallowed.

MF Dani Ceballos, 5 -- Pulled the strings from deep in midfield, but found the final ball elusive. In the second half he could do little to prevent Olympiakos from growing into the game and was substituted.

MF Granit Xhaka, 5 -- A typically tenacious performance from Xhaka, who was walking the tightrope of being one yellow card away from missing the next game. His passing was often wasteful, but his incisive and perfectly weighted through ball set Saka free to cross for the goal that was disallowed.

MF Mesut Ozil, 5 -- Ozil had only played 30 mins in this competition this season before tonight, and while his flicks and passing brought some quality to Arsenal's attack, he did little to influence the game until his cross for Aubameyang's finish. At the other end, he was guilty of letting Cisse run past him to head home the opener.

MF Nicolas Pepe, 7 -- A threat on the right all game, Pepe's quick feet and trickery were a constant menace. He was brought down on the edge of the area by Ousseynou Ba when through on goal on 20 minutes and hit the subsequent free kick over the bar. In the second half he had the beating of his markers on several occasions and came close with a shot on 75 minutes.

MF Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, 5 -- Aubameyang was largely anonymous for long spells and couldn't quite seem to be able to get into the game. He moved closer to Lacazette in the second half to try and get more involved, and it was his moment of brilliance, the aforementioned overhead kick, that should have sealed Arsenal's progression. His subsequent miss in the dying seconds after Olympiakos had retaken the lead will keep him awake tonight.

FW Alexandre Lacazette, 3 -- The lone striker had a quiet game, though he thought he'd opened the scoring before the break, only for his close-range effort to be ruled offside. He lashed wildly from the edge of the area with 10 minutes remaining, in what was an under-par performance from the Frenchman.

Substitutes

DF Sokratis Papastathopoulos, N/R -- Came on for the injured Mustafi in extra-time.

MF Joe Willock, 4 -- He had played every minute of every game in this competition before tonight, and he came on to replace Bellerin late on. Looked dangerous at times.

MF Lucas Torreira, 6 -- Back in the squad after a heavy cold and after a 15-minute cameo against Everton at the weekend, he came on with 18 minutes of normal time remaining. His introduction stemmed the tide of attacks, and at the other end he had a shot saved by Jose Sa in the last 10 minutes.

FW Gabriel Martinelli, N/R -- The youngster injected some much-needed pace and excitement into the side, and it was his presence at the near post that saw Ozil's cross find Aubameyang. He should have come on earlier.

Punter steals show at combine on bench press

Published in Breaking News
Thursday, 27 February 2020 15:55

INDIANAPOLIS -- In a sea of All-Americans and award winners from this past college football season at the NFL scouting combine, it was a punter who snatched at least some of the attention away from the quarterbacks, wide receivers and tight ends who were working out inside Lucas Oil Stadium on Thursday night.

Arizona State's Michael Turk, the only kicker or punter to take part in the bench press at the combine this year, put up 25 repetitions of 225 pounds. To put that in perspective, it means the 6-foot-1/2-inch, 226-pound Turk did better in the bench than all but one of the tight ends who participated Thursday and better than all 33 wide receivers who took part in the drill.

Turk's 25 reps were more than current NFL mainstays Frank Clark (19 in 2015), Jadeveon Clowney (21 in 2014), DeMarcus Lawrence (20 in 2014), Devin White (22 in 2019), Chandler Jones (22 in 2012) or Michael Bennett (24 in 2009).

Turk spent one season with the Sun Devils after transferring from Lafayette. This past season Turk punted 59 times in 12 games, averaging 46 yards a punt, a total that included a 75-yard punt in the team's season opener against Kent State.

Twenty-one of Turk's punts went for 50 yards or more, and he had just six touchbacks.

Turk's uncle, Matt, was an NFL punter for 17 seasons with Houston, Washington, Miami, Jacksonville, the New York Jets and St. Louis.

76ers still evaluating Embiid, who sits vs. Knicks

Thursday, 27 February 2020 15:17

PHILADELPHIA -- The Philadelphia 76ers are down two All-Stars.

Already missing Ben Simmons because of a back injury, the 76ers played without center Joel Embiid on Thursday night against New York due to a sprained left shoulder.

"It's a painfully obvious bind," Philadelphia coach Brett Brown said. "We're missing two All-Stars. You yank that from the team and it's painful."

Embiid was injured Wednesday night in a loss at Cleveland when he collided with Ante Zizic. X-rays following the game didn't show a fracture. He was being reevaluated prior to the game Thursday, and the 76ers said they would have another update Friday.

Embiid sat for the 17th time this season due to injury or suspension.

Simmons missed his third game. Injured in a practice, he has a nerve impingement in his lower back and will miss at least two weeks.

NBA fines Timberwolves $25K for resting Russell

Published in Basketball
Thursday, 27 February 2020 14:47

The NBA fined the Minnesota Timberwolves $25,000 Thursday for violating the league's player resting policy, marking the first time the league has enforced the load-management rules put in place in 2017 and clarified in November.

The violation occurred when the Timberwolves rested D'Angelo Russell -- a healthy player under the policy -- during Sunday's road game against the Nuggets in Denver, the league said.

The resting policy limits teams from sitting healthy players in "high-profile" nationally televised games. Sunday's game was on NBA TV. The policy requires that teams rest players only when they are home, unless there are unusual circumstances.

The Wolves said in a statement that they accepted the fine but noted: "We are a player-centric organization that's focused on learning and optimizing our players' bodies. As a new player in our program, we chose to rest D'Angelo in order to learn his body better and to optimize his health during a difficult stretch of games and travel."

In November, the NBA fined the LA Clippers $50,000 for comments made by coach Doc Rivers that "were inconsistent" with Kawhi Leonard's health.

Leonard had sat out the first of a back-to-back set of games for the second time this season. In its ruling, the NBA made it clear the Clippers were compliant with league rules in the team's decision to sit the All-Star for load management of a knee injury. But Rivers, when asked before the game about Leonard and his health, said he "feels great," that there was no reason to be concerned and that the team has to make sure Leonard stays feeling great.

The league then outlined new guidelines for injury reporting in a Nov. 11 memo to teams, a copy of which was obtained by ESPN. The short version: Load management is now rest. If that term is used, it will mean a healthy player is taking the night off. If skipping that particular game violates the league's resting policy, that player's team will be penalized.

The league implemented the rules in 2017 after several instances in which teams rested players that would've resulted in a fine under the rules. But the history of "load management" dates to at least 2012, when Gregg Popovich sent Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili, Tony Parker and Danny Green back to San Antonio before the Spurs' last game of a six-game road trip. That drew widespread attention most notably because it was a prime-time matchup with LeBron James and the Miami Heat.

Then-commissioner David Stern, calling it a "disservice to the league and our fans," fined the Spurs $250,000.

Information from ESPN's Ohm Youngmisuk, Zach Lowe and The Associated Press was used in this report.

Verlander (groin) throws 2 IP in simulated game

Published in Baseball
Thursday, 27 February 2020 15:04

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- Justin Verlander pitched a two-inning simulated game on Thursday in place of what had been scheduled as his spring training debut, a switch made because of groin tightness.

"Actually, my dad sent me something last night: An ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure," the Houston Astros ace said.

Scratched from Thursday's start, Verlander threw approximately 30 pitches off a back-field mound before the Astros' game against Washington.

"It went about as good as I could have felt today," Verlander said. "Maybe noticed it just a little bit. Once I got on the mound, just kind of tried to pitch and not worry about it too much."

New Houston manager Dusty Baker liked what he saw of the reigning AL Cy Young Award winner. Verlander was 21-6 with a 2.52 ERA last season.

"He looked very good," Baker said. "He looked sharp. He wasn't satisfied with some of his pitches, but I was."

The 37-year-old righty disliked his first inning but saw significant improvement in the second. Verlander considered extending himself to a third inning, then thought back to his father's message.

"I asked Dusty, 'If this were a game and we were out there with the bright lights on, would you take me out?'" Verlander said. "He said, 'Yep, you'd be done right now.' I said OK. Day accomplished."

Groin tightness isn't new to Verlander, but when it has occurred in the past it has been during the regular season.

"So I kind of know, or have an idea, how to maintain it and try to avoid anything serious," Verlander said.

Baker thinks Verlander will start Tuesday against St. Louis in Jupiter. Verlander won't commit until he sees how he recovers.

Verlander will have time to make at least four starts during the remaining spring games and could potentially make five.

"If there's a lot of stuff I need to work on, I don't have a lot of time to do it," said Verlander, who has four or five turns before the March 26 opener against the Los Angeles Angels. "But if I feel pretty good and my stuff's working, then it's just about building my pitch count."

Manfred, Selig to be deposed in foul-ball lawsuit

Published in Baseball
Thursday, 27 February 2020 15:27

A judge ruled Thursday that baseball commissioner Rob Manfred, his predecessor, Bud Selig, and his top deputy, Dan Halem, are to be deposed by April 3 in a lawsuit over injuries a fan suffered three years ago when he was hit in the head by a foul ball at Wrigley Field.

The negligence suit against Major League Baseball alleges that MLB failed to take proper action to protect fans after conducting a 2015 review of safety in the stands regarding foul balls and thrown and broken bats.

Manfred, who succeeded Selig in 2015, has never officially mandated safety netting guidelines, but he did recommend extensions of the netting to the near ends of the dugouts by 2016. All 30 teams had extended netting to the far ends of the dugouts by 2018.

The plaintiff, Jay Loos, now 62, lost the sight in his left eye and suffered multiple facial fractures.

He was seated along the first-base line for a Pirates-Cubs game on Aug. 29, 2017, when the foul ball struck him.

Cook County Circuit Court Judge Melissa Durkin denied a motion by MLB in opposition to the depositions sought by Loos. MLB argued that no commissioner has ever been deposed in such a case.

Contacted by ESPN's Outside the Lines on Thursday evening, both a spokesman for MLB and the attorney for Loos declined to comment.

MLB announced in December that all 30 teams would have netting extending beyond the far ends of the dugouts for 2020 and some would have it extend to both foul poles, as is the case in Japan

Lawmakers push for Flood's enshrinement in HOF

Published in Baseball
Thursday, 27 February 2020 16:00

WASHINGTON -- Curt Flood's widow has a simple explanation for why her late husband, who is revered by players for sacrificing his career to advocate for free agency, has not been enshrined in baseball's Hall of Fame.

"I think the holdup is that he got on a lot of people's nerves," Judy Pace Flood said.

Flood has some powerful advocates on his side.

Members of Congress sent a letter to the Hall of Fame on Thursday asking that Flood be elected in December by the next golden era committee. The recognition would coincide with the 50-year anniversary of Flood's defiant letter to baseball Commissioner Bowie Kuhn in which he wrote, "I do not feel that I am a piece of property to be bought and sold irrespective of my wishes."

"What Curt Flood did and championed is resonating throughout professional sports for the past 50 years," Rep. David Trone, a Maryland Democrat who is leading the push for Flood's enshrinement, said at a news conference.

Flood was 31 when he sent that letter on Dec. 24, 1969. He had spent most of the past decade as the starting center fielder for the St. Louis Cardinals. A three-time All-Star, Flood won seven consecutive Gold Gloves and helped lead the Cardinals to three National League pennants and two World Series titles.

"What a great ballplayer," said Sen. Roy Blunt, a Missouri Republican. "When the great Stan Musial was finishing up his career in right field, Curt Flood would play all of center and about half of right so that Stan the Man could still be on the team."

After the 1969 season, Flood asked the Cardinals for a pay raise. Instead, they traded him to the Philadelphia Phillies. Under baseball's reserve clause, players were fully under the control of their teams.

Flood refused the trade and, with the backing of players' union executive director Marvin Miller, filed a federal lawsuitin January 1970 challenging the reserve clause. The Supreme Court ruled against him in a 5-3 decision in 1972, but the justices agreed Flood's arguments had merit. They said they could not intervene because it was up to Congress to alter the antitrust exemption created in 1922 when the Supreme Court ruled baseball was not interstate commerce.

The union kept fighting, and the reserve clause was struck down in December 1975 by arbitrator Peter Seitz in a case involving pitchers Andy Messersmith and Dave McNally. The following July, owners and the union agreed to a labor contract that included free agency.

"I will tell people to this day: Curt did not lose that case," Pace Flood said.

Flood's efforts essentially ended his career. He only played in 13 more games in the majors after his letter to Kuhn. With 1,861 hits, a .293 batting average and his defensive prowess, Flood could have retired with Hall of Fame-worthy numbers had he spent several more seasons as a regular player.

Flood battled alcoholism before rebuilding his life with the help of Pace Flood, an actress ("Peyton Place," "Cotton Comes to Harlem") who broke down barriers for black women in Hollywood. The couple dated in the '60s and married in 1986. Flood died of throat cancer in 1997. He was 59.

The significance of his contributions is not lost on today's players. Pitcher Gerrit Cole mentioned Flood when he signed his $324 million contract with the New York Yankees in December.

"It's so important that players know the other sacrifices that players made in order to keep the integrity of the game where it is," Cole said.

Players' unions from the NFL, NHL, NBA and MLS had representatives at Thursday's news conference, and 102 members of Congress signed the letter to the Hall of Fame. Miller was elected to the Hall last year by the modern era committee, an encouraging development for Flood's advocates. Flood's letter to Kuhn is on display in Cooperstown, too.

"He had a clearly building Hall of Fame career cut short," said Donald Fehr, the former MLBPA executive director who now leads the NHL players' union. "It was cut short because he said, `Thus far and no farther. This is wrong. It has to change."

Very best on duty, leading ladies centre stage

Published in Table Tennis
Thursday, 27 February 2020 13:16

An added ingredient, it is an Olympic year, skills are honed to perfection, in the Aspire Dome, excellence is the order.

Chen Meng, no.1 seed

The world no.1 is not only the world no. 1 for a reason – being the very best in the world – but also because of many other reasons. The first thought when you hear the name ‘Chen Meng’ is realising that the Chinese star is in the form of her life.

Having won the Agricultural Bank of China 2019 ITTF World Tour Grand Finals not more than six weeks ago, she has started 2020 as she ended 2019 – winning the ITTF World Tour Platinum German Open. In Qatar, she is a previous winner in 2012 and 2017.

Sun Yingsha, no.2 seed

However, Chen Meng isn’t the only woman coming into Doha in form. Using her youthful exuberance to the fullest, compatriot Sun Yingsha, the winner of three titles last year is out to to really prove herself to the table tennis elite.

Collecting gold in Australia, Japan and Germany, Sun climbed from world no.29 last April to currently occupy the no.2 position. The 19 year old is more than just a threat to Chen, she’s a real rival.

Mima Ito, no.3 seed

Another teenager in the mix in Qatar is Japan’s Mima Ito, her confidence boosted at the recent 2020 ITTF World Tour Hungarian Open. In the women’s singles final, she recovered from 2-3 down in games and 2-7 in the sixth to beat Chinese Taipei’s Cheng I-Ching.

Her personal rivalry with Sun Yingsha is one to watch as well. Will Ito be able to overcome the Chinese dominated women’s elite? The thing is, when you beat one, there is always another waiting.

Liu Shiwen, no.4 seed

World Champion and World Cup winner Liu Shiwen is a three times the champion in Doha, having secured gold in 2011, 2016 and 2018.

She has a clear target. Can she match Zhang Yining’s four wins from 2005, 2006, 2008 and 2009?

Wang Manyu, no.5 seed

Qatar will also see Wang Manyu in action who, like Sun Yingsha, is eager to showcase her true class on a more consistent basis on the World Tour and define her worth as a future first team selection.

She is the defending champion; last year no opponent was able to take the 21-year-old to seven games. Shortly after that performance, she was on her way to the later stages of the Liebherr 2019 World Championships, only to miss out against Chen Meng in the semi-finals. Can Wang display that sort of form at this grand stage again?

Zhu Yuling, no.6 seed

The winner of the Marvellous 12 tournament earlier in the year in January, China’s Zhu Yuling is playing with increased confidence.

On a mission beyond the gold, Zhu will want to prove she is worthy of carrying the national team flag after the potential retirement of Ding Ning and Liu Shiwen who are now the wrong side of 30.

Ding Ning, no.7 seed

Speaking of 30, don’t forget the Queen of Hearts, Ding Ning. Winner in 2013 in Qatar, this is all but familiar territory to her.

The Tokyo Olympic Games 2020 is certain to be on her mind, and it will stand to reason how her form is going into the biggest challenge she will face at this age. Luckily for her, she is not showing any signs of slowing down at the table.

Feng Tianwei, no.8 seed

The Singaporean veteran Feng Tianwei will also be in a similar boat to Ding. Nine ITTF World Tour women’s singles titles to her name, could 2020 be her swansong year?

In order to to keep pace with current generation, Feng will need all her experience and patience in Doha, building a head of steam – and form – going into the Olympic Games not too far in the future.
