COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Peter Laviolette is returning to the bench after being selected as the coach of the United States men's national team competing at the world hockey championships in May.
The move was announced by USA Hockey on Wednesday, and comes seven weeks after Laviolette was fired by the Nashville Predators.
Laviolette ranks 16th in NHL wins with 637 covering four teams over 18 seasons, including the 2006 Stanley Cup champion Carolina Hurricanes. He also coached the New York Islanders and Philadelphia Flyers.
From Massachusetts, the 55-year-old Laviolette also has extensive experience representing the U.S. as a coach and player on the international stage.
The tournament being held in Switzerland will mark the fourth time Laviolette has coached the U.S. at the world championships, and the first since 2014, when the Americans lost to Czech Republic in the quarterfinals in Belarus. He was also U.S. coach in 2004, when the team won a bronze medal, and '05.
Laviolette also coached the national team to an eighth-place finish at the 2006 Olympics.
As a player, Laviolette was a two-time Olympian in representing the U.S. in 1988 and 1994, when he served as team captain.
"Peter is a terrific coach and someone who has had success wherever he's been," said USA Hockey's John Vanbiesbrouck. "We're thrilled to have him back as head coach of our men's national team."
Team USA's roster will begin being stocked once the NHL's regular season concludes during the first weekend in April. The Americans have been limited to winning just six bronze medals since a silver-medal finish in 1950.
The world championships are scheduled to run from May 8-24.

Viktor Hovland eyeing Ryder Cup following maiden PGA Tour win
PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. – Viktor Hovland has enjoyed hearing a lot of congratulations since breaking through to win his first PGA Tour title at the Puerto Rico Open on Sunday, but he took particular delight hearing it from European Ryder Cup captain Padraig Harrington.
They crossed paths arriving at this week’s Honda Classic.
“That was great,” Hovland said. “Hopefully, I can just keep playing well and kind of make more of my mark, that maybe I have a chance to be on the team.”
Hovland, the 22-year-old rookie from Norway, is highly motivated to make the European team that will meet the Americans at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin Sept. 25-27.
“I have been looking at the Ryder Cup as something that I want to play in for a really long time,” he said.
Hovland is now 20th on Europe’s world rankings points list. The top five will make the team when qualifying ends at the conclusion of the BMW PGA Championship on Sept. 13. His victory gets him into The Players Championship in two weeks and the PGA Championship in May. He’s also in good position to qualify for the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play at the end of March. The top 64 the week before the match-play event qualify.
Those all give Hovland better chances to stack up the points he needs to make the European team.
If Hovland doesn’t end up making the team on points, the WGC-Dell Technologies gives him a great chance to impress Harrington with his match-play skills. Harrington will make three captain’s picks after five of his rosters spots are filled off the world rankings and four off the European Tour points list.
“I'm really a big fan of match play, and I would say I've played some of my best golf in matches,” said Hovland, the 2018 U.S. Amateur champ. “So, hopefully, I can get in there and do well.”
Sources: Wisconsin transfer King to join Huskers
Wisconsin basketball transfer Kobe King has committed to Nebraska, sources told ESPN.
King, a 6-foot-4 guard, announced in late January that he was leaving the Badgers. Days earlier, the school announced that King would not play against Iowa to deal with a personal matter. Sources told ESPN at the time that King was unhappy at Wisconsin and that a parting seemed imminent.
King later told the Wisconsin State Journal that he told coaches and teammates he was leaving the team before the announcement about him missing the Iowa game.
King started 19 games for the Badgers this season, averaging 10.0 points and 2.8 rebounds. He scored a career-high 24 points against Indiana in early December and had 21 points against Illinois in January. King faced his future head coach, Fred Hoiberg, and Nebraska on Jan. 21, his next-to-last game at Wisconsin. He played 30 minutes and finished with nine points and five assists.
King played just 10 games as a freshman before suffering a season-ending knee injury in December 2017. He started one game as a redshirt freshman before emerging as a staple in the Wisconsin lineup this season.
King is expected to have two seasons of eligibility remaining and will likely apply for a waiver to play immediately next fall.

Hornets' Monk suspended indefinitely by NBA
Charlotte Hornets guard Malik Monk has been suspended indefinitely for violating the NBA's anti-drug program.
The league announced the suspension Wednesday but did not disclose details of Monk's violation.
The NBA also left the suspension open-ended, saying it will begin with Wednesday's game against the Knicks and "will continue until he is determined to be in full compliance with the NBA/NBPA Anti-Drug Program."
Monk, 22, is averaging 10.3 points in 55 games this season, his third with the Hornets.
Red Sox prospect Liu quarantined as precaution
Boston Red Sox prospect Chih-Jung Liu, who arrived from his native Taiwan last week, is in quarantine as a precaution against the coronavirus.
The 20-year-old right-hander is in his hotel room in Fort Myers, Florida, and says he feels fine.
Liu wrote on his Facebook page that he's doing some weight training, getting in an occasional run and reading about the team online.
The coronavirus originated in China and has killed over 2,700 people worldwide. There are now more new cases of the virus outside China than inside the country, according to the World Health Organization. WHO declared a global health emergency last month.
A Red Sox spokesman told the Boston Globe that the team was using "an overabundance of caution" in having Liu in quarantine.
Liu is scheduled to be released from quarantine on Saturday if he doesn't show symptoms for the virus.
Ahmed Ali Saleh and Dina Meshref win in Tunis, establish records
In both finals, Nigeria had to settle for runners up spot.
Ahmed Ali Saleh, the no.2 seed and now 40 years old, caused somewhat of an upset; he accounted for Quadri Aruna, the top seed (11-6, 5-11, 11-9, 6-11, 11-9, 9-11, 11-3) to secure the title.
“I am very happy because I could not imagine that I would beat Aruna in this tournament. All I did was to focus from the first point to the end. I really don’t want to quit at 40 as I want to play until my body cannot do it anymore. I love table tennis and I will continue.” Ahmed Ali Saleh
Somewhat differently for Dina Meshref, 25 year of age, she justified her top seeded position; she accounted for Offiong Edem, the no.2 seed, in the title decider (11-2, 11-8, 8-11, 11-5, 11-6).
“From the start of the competition, I just stayed focused, played my game and did not think about how many times I had won in the past. I must commend Edem because she is an experienced player who played extremely well. She changed tactics time and again which made it sometimes difficult to play against her.” Dina Meshref
Fourth time
Notably for Ahmed Ali Saleh, it is the fourth time that he has won an African Cup title; thus he matches Quadri Aruna and colleague El-Sayed Lashin. Commencing in 1998 El-Sayed Lashin won on four occasions as, with a first win in 2009, did Quadri Aruna.
Furthermore, Ahmed Ali Saleh breaks the stranglehold that Quadri Aruna and Omar Assar, also from Egypt, have held on the title; since 2014 in Lagos, they have shared the honours, three wins each.
Longevity
However, no player can match Ahmed Ali Saleh in terms of longevity; his first win was over 20 years ago in 1997 when, as an aspiring 17 year old, he succeded in Port Elizabeth, later he was to prevail in 2008 in Congo Brazzaville and in 2011 in Rabat.
Incredibly he has won the Africa Cup title once in each of four decades; presumably he must now wait until 2030 for his next win?
Similarly, it means that he will also compete in the Men’s World Cup over a period of four decades. Düsseldorf will be his seventh appearance in the tournament. He made his debut in 1998 in Shantou, later in 2001 he played in Courmayeur; then in 2005 in Liège. More recently he was present in 2007 in Barcelona, 2011 in Paris and 2012 in Liverpool.
Only one other player has competed in the Men’s World Cup in four decades; Belgium’s Jean-Michel Saive made his debut in 1989 in Nairobi, his farewell in 2013 in Liege.
Clear of field
Meanwhile, for Dina Meshref, she is miles clear of the field; in a totally different stratosphere.
She has now won the Africa Cup title eight times. The only other player to have won on more than one occasion is compatriot, Shaimaa Abdul-Aziz, she emerged victorious in 1997 in Port Elizabeth and in 1998 in Cairo.
The first win for Dina Meshref was in 2011 in Rabat; since 2014 in Lagos she has always won.
Furthermore, she now qualifies for eighth ITTF Women’s World Cup appearance; similar to her success in the Africa Cup, she made her debut in 2011 in Singapore and ever since 2014 in Linz, she has been ever present.
Third place in the men’s event was secured by Omar Assar who beat Senegal’s Ibrahima Diaw (11-6, 11-8, 12-10), in the women’s by Cameroon’s Sarah Hanffou, she overcame Egypt’s Yousra Helmy (11-8, 5-11, 11-6, 12-10).
