Jets acquire Sens D-man DeMelo for draft pick

Published in Hockey
Tuesday, 18 February 2020 11:35

The Ottawa Senators have traded defenseman Dylan DeMelo to the Winnipeg Jets for a 2020 third-round pick, Ottawa announced Tuesday.

DeMelo, 26, has zero goals and 10 assists in 49 games this season. He was part of a blockbuster trade in September 2018 when he was moved to the Senators in a deal that sent Erik Karlsson to the San Jose Sharks.

With Ottawa sitting in seventh place in the Atlantic Division and almost assured of missing the playoffs for the third straight year, DeMelo was just one of several pending unrestricted free agents that the Senators could move this month in search of future assets. They already possess two first-round picks (along with the Sharks') in the 2020 draft.

Last season, DeMelo was one of several Senators players caught in a viral video criticizing the club and then-assistant coach Marty Raymond while riding in an Uber.

The Jets are currently only three points out of the second wild card in the West despite seeing their defense decimated in the offseason. They lost Jacob Trouba, Tyler Myers, Ben Chiarot and Dustin Byfuglien from last year's blue line.

DeMelo has a solid 53.1 Corsi percentage at even strength this season while having a 51.7 defensive zone start percentage, so he should provide some backbone to the Jets D unit.

Featured groups for the WGC-Mexico Championship

Tuesday, 18 February 2020 06:25

Defending champion Dustin Johnson will play alongside Francesco Molinari and Abraham Ancer in the first two rounds of the WGC-Mexico Championship.

The trio will go out at 12:39 p.m. ET off the 10th tee in Round 1 and 1:51 p.m. ET off the first tee in Round 2 at Chapultepec Golf Club.

Here's a look at a few other notable groups (all times ET):

12:51 p.m. Thursday, No. 10; 2:03 p.m. Friday, No. 1: Tommy Fleetwood, Gary Woodland, Rory McIlroy

McIlroy is the odds-on favorite this week, coming off T-5 finish last week at the Genesis Invitational. He finished runner-up to Johnson at this event a year ago. Fleetwood remains in search of his first PGA Tour win, while Woodland is seeking his first victory since capturing last year's U.S. Open.

1:51 p.m. Thursday, No. 1; 12:39 p.m. Friday, No. 10: Hideki Matsuyama, Marc Leishman, Justin Thomas

Matsuyama also tied for fifth at Riviera Country Club, but he hasn't won on Tour since the 2017 WGC-Bridgestone Invitational. Leishman (Farmers Insurance Open) and Thomas (CJ Cup and Sentry Tournament of Champions) both have wins this season.

2:03 p.m. Thursday, No. 1; 12:51 p.m. Friday, No. 10: Adam Scott, Carlos Ortiz, Jon Rahm

Scott ended a four-year winless drought on Tour last week at the Genesis. He won this tournament in 2016, when it was contested at Doral. Rahm is vying for his first individual PGA Tour title in over two years, while Ortiz is making his maiden WGC start.

MEXICO CITY – Collin Morikawa had a general idea of where he needed to finish last week at the Genesis Invitational in order to crack the field here in Mexico.

And while a torrid start on Sunday at Riviera helped, there were no guarantees.

“It was a little stressful after the round just kind of watching. We had to have a few things work themselves out,” Morikawa said on Tuesday at the WGC-Mexico Championship.

He estimated he needed to finish inside the top 40 to move into the top 50 in the Official World Golf Ranking and qualify for this week’s World Golf Championship. His tie for 26th in Los Angeles was indeed enough to push him to 49th in the world.

“I’ve had my mind set that this could definitely be in the schedule. Even since last fall, this was going to be in my schedule,” said Morikawa, who is making his first WGC start this week. “I wanted to make sure I got here. This is where you want to be, and these are the tournaments you want to make your schedule around.”

The World Golf Championships offer guaranteed points and earnings, but that’s not why the 23-year-old was focused on the elite events after he earned his PGA Tour card with his victory at last year’s Barracuda Championship.

“It’s more about having another learning opportunity. When you’re able to play with better players and get in better fields, you’re able to learn more,” he said. “You’re able to look at these guys when you play and practice with them, just what they do a little differently than someone in the top 125 on the FedExCup last year.”

Sources: Pogba eyes move; Man Utd want £150m+

Published in Soccer
Tuesday, 18 February 2020 08:02

Paul Pogba expects to leave Manchester United this summer, but the club are determined that he will not be sold in a cut-price deal, sources have told ESPN.

Pogba was keen to leave Old Trafford last summer but was convinced to stay for at least another season by manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. The France international believes he will be allowed to move at the end of the campaign, with Spanish giants Barcelona and Real Madrid, or former club Juventus, his preferred destinations.

- When does the transfer window re-open?
- All major completed transfer deals

Despite Solskjaer's public declarations that Pogba will not be sold, there is a growing feeling among key figures that the 26-year-old -- along with agent Mino Raiola -- is becoming too big a distraction and will have to move on.

However, United insist privately that they will not be put on the back foot during any negotiations and are prepared to stick to their valuation of more than £150 million.

Pogba has 18 months left on the contract he signed when he joined from Juventus for a then-world-record fee of £89.3m in 2016, and United also hold an option to extend it until June 2022.

United are prepared to enter into talks with any serious bidder, but there remain significant doubts about whether Barcelona, Real Madrid or Juventus could afford a substantial transfer fee and Pogba's hefty wage packet.

Pogba has not featured for United since coming on as a half-time substitute in the 4-1 win over Newcastle on Dec. 26 and has been restricted to just eight appearances all season. He underwent ankle surgery in January, with sources having told ESPN the procedure was to correct a osteochondral defect.

He has started light running without a cast but, due to the seriousness of the issue, United are refusing to put any timescale on a return to first-team action.

Pogba has responded well to treatment and there is hope he will be available again this season and feature for France at this summer's European Championship, but United are remaining cautious about an injury that has caused significant problems for other players.

English midfielder Gary O'Neil was sidelined for eight months during a spell at West Ham after undergoing surgery on an osteochondral ankle defect in 2011.

Meanwhile, after launching a blistering attack on Solskjaer via Twitter on Monday night, Raiola again spoke about Pogba's future in an interview with talkSPORT on Tuesday.

"I've been asked something about if he would like Italy and I am only just answering as Mino Raiola -- am I not allowed to do that?" Raiola said. "I have never said he is mine but that doesn't mean if I'm asked something I can't answer.

"He is an employee of Manchester United. They do not own him. Pogba and I respect United.

"I have no problem with Manchester United. There is no division between me and Manchester United. Ole already snapped out at me two times on other occasions but that's all up to him.

"The only thing is to get back as soon as possible into the team or fit enough to get into the team. It is up to the manager to pick him and to focus on the end of the season and make a good season for Man United."

Trump pardons former 49ers owner DeBartolo

Published in Breaking News
Tuesday, 18 February 2020 08:36

WASHINGTON -- President Donald Trump has pardoned Edward DeBartolo Jr., the former San Francisco 49ers owner convicted in a gambling fraud scandal.

DeBartolo, 73, who helped to build the 49ers' dynasty of the 1980s and '90s, was involved in one of the biggest owners' scandals in the sport's history.

In 1998, he pleaded guilty to failing to report a felony when he paid $400,000 to former Louisiana Gov. Edwin Edwards in exchange for a riverboat gambling license.

The White House announced the surprise decision to reporters on Tuesday. NFL greats Jerry Rice, Jim Brown, Ronnie Lott and Charles Haley were in attendance.

DeBartolo, whose 49ers won five Super Bowls under his leadership, stepped down as owner in 1997 after two Louisiana newspapers reported he would be indicted for gambling fraud. He avoided prison, was fined $1 million and was suspended for a year by the NFL. But the episode effectively ended his NFL career.

Rice, a Pro Football Hall of Famer who played on three of DeBartolo's Super Bowl-winning teams, said DeBartolo "was like that 12th man" of the great 49ers teams.

"He's the main reason why we won so many Super Bowls," Rice said. "So today is a great day for him. I'm glad to be here and be a part of that. It's just something I will never forget. This man, he has done so much in the community, has done so much in NFL football."

DeBartolo withdrew from the riverboat project after the state gambling board demanded he hand over all documents he gave to the grand jury. The documents included an "unexecuted agreement'' between DeBartolo and Stephen Edwards, according to a copy of a grand jury subpoena obtained by the newspapers.

The state gambling board canceled the project after DeBartolo withdrew.

The DeBartolo family built their fortune through commercial real estate -- mostly owning shopping malls. The family business was started by DeBartolo's father, who died in 1994. In addition to the 49ers, the family also owned the Pittsburgh Penguins of the National Hockey League before selling the team in 1991.

DeBartolo Jr. ran the 49ers starting in 1977, and his hiring of coach Bill Walsh in 1979 led to the franchise's most successful era. From 1982 to 1995, the team won five Super Bowls.

After the suspension, DeBartolo gave control of the team to his sister, Denise DeBartolo York.

He never returned to the NFL after his suspension. The team is now run by his nephew, Jed York.

DeBartolo was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2016.

Oddsmakers favor Lions, Dolphins to pick Tua

Published in Breaking News
Tuesday, 18 February 2020 10:48

Oddsmakers at Caesars Sportsbook believe the Detroit Lions and the Miami Dolphins are the two most likely landing sports for Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa.

Caesars has the Lions and Dolphins as co-favorites at -110 to land Tagovailoa, who is recovering from a hip injury he suffered in mid-November. Detroit owns the third pick in April's NFL draft, with Miami at No. 5.

Lions general manager Bob Quinn has denied that the team is shopping veteran starting quarterback Matthew Stafford, but ESPN football analyst Mel Kiper Jr. has Tagovailoa pegged to go to Detroit at No. 3.

The Los Angeles Chargers (5-2), Cincinnati Bengals (7-1), Carolina Panthers (7-1) and Jacksonville Jaguars (9-1) are next on Caesars' odds to draft Tagovailoa, who could return to football activities in March. Sources told ESPN that recent test results showed his hip has healed and he has good range of motion.

On Tuesday, Caesars also released an over/under on the number of quarterbacks to be drafted in the first round. The line opened at 4.5, with the vigorish shaded toward the under at -150. Kiper has four quarterbacks in his current first-round mock draft.

LSU quarterback Joe Burrow is the overwhelming favorite to go No. 1 to the Bengals. The DraftKings sportsbook has Burrow listed at -10,000 to go first overall.

Oregon quarterback Justin Herbert and Washington quarterback Jacob Eason also are currently in Kiper's mock first round. Utah State's Jordan Love, Georgia's Jake Fromm and Oklahoma's Jalen Hurts are other quarterbacks who could receive early consideration.

The NFL draft will be April 23-25 in Las Vegas.

Brees to 'make another run at it' with Saints

Published in Breaking News
Tuesday, 18 February 2020 09:10

METAIRIE, La. -- Drew Brees isn't done yet.

The New Orleans Saints quarterback and the NFL's career passing leader will return for a 20th season after posting to Instagram on Tuesday that he will "make another run at it."

Brees, who turned 41 in January, was scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent March 18, but he has made it clear for the past several years that he has no interest in testing the open market. So his only choices were staying in New Orleans or retiring.

The two sides will need to work out a new contract, but that shouldn't be contentious. The last time Brees was a free agent, in 2018, he agreed to a two-year, $50 million contract that was slightly below market value -- with only one year of salary guaranteed.

The Saints will also have to decide whether they want to try to keep both of their backups: unrestricted free agent Teddy Bridgewater and restricted free agent Taysom Hill. Coach Sean Payton said in late January that he thought it would be "very difficult" and "unrealistic" to keep all three quarterbacks with the Saints slammed tight against the salary cap.

That would seemingly make Bridgewater, 27, the odd man out for financial reasons -- especially if another team is willing to pay him like a starter on the open market. Bridgewater went 5-0 as a starter while Brees was sidelined by a thumb injury in 2019, which should make him more attractive than he was as a free agent last year.

Hill, 29, will be easier to retain as a restricted free agent. The Saints can match any offer he might sign with another team. And depending on the size of New Orleans' qualifying offer to Hill, teams would have to give up either a first- or second-round draft pick if the Saints don't match the offer. A first-round tender will likely cost somewhere between $4.5 and $5 million.

"I had a pretty good inkling that he was gonna come back, [but] I just didn't know when everyone else was going to know," Hill told The Adam Schefter Podcast on Tuesday. "I'm so excited for Drew to come back. He's become such a good friend, such a great mentor to me. When we had conversations, I told him, man I sure hope he came back and played. I felt like it was better for the NFL and for him to be playing.

"Obviously there's a process going to restricted free agency and we'll go through that process and see what happens, but, man, I would love to play with Drew again."

There have also been multiple reports that Payton views the versatile QB/RB/WR/TE/special-teams monster Hill as a future franchise quarterback, despite the fact that he has attempted only 15 career passes, including the playoffs.

No matter who ultimately becomes Brees' successor, he will have to wait at least one more season.

Brees said he wanted to take time with his family after the season to decompress and mull his future -- something he has done after each of the past three seasons. But it would have been a bit surprising to see him walk away now, since he is still playing at such a high level.

He finished with the best passer rating of his career in 2019 (116.3) and helped lead the Saints to a 13-3 record, despite missing those five games early in the season with the thumb injury. He was named the NFC's Offensive Player of the Month for December, when he threw 15 touchdowns with zero turnovers and completed a NFL-record 29-of-30 passes in a Week 15 win over the Indianapolis Colts.

"I still have that same goal to have the opportunity to be that guy for a franchise," Hill told The Adam Schefter Podcast. "At the end of the day, I believe in myself. That's never changed. That's what it's always been. Obviously with Coach Payton and his creativity, the first few years of my career has gone down a different path. But the vision for myself has never changed."

Brees had a disappointing performance in the Saints' wild-card playoff loss to the Minnesota Vikings (208 passing yards, one touchdown, one interception and one lost fumble), but that was all the more reason to expect him to come back and try to return to the Super Bowl for the first time since the Saints won their only championship in the 2009 season.

Apparently Brees also wasn't ready to concede his NFL records for career passing yards (77,416) and touchdown passes (547) to 42-year-old Tom Brady, who is in striking distance of both marks.

Although Brees is no longer throwing for 5,000-plus yards per season and doesn't dial up the deep ball very often anymore, he has continued to adapt his game by being even more efficient. He just posted the three best completion percentages in NFL history over the past three seasons (72.0 in 2017, 74.4 in 2018 and 74.3 in 2019) and has a total of 18 turnovers over the past three years combined.

Payton said in late January that he hasn't seen any drop-off in Brees' performance.

"I'm watching this guy perform, and again his numbers this year exceeded last year's. The job is for him to win, and he's done that," Payton said. "Look, is the ball going down the field the same way? Maybe it's not. And yet his yards per completion and all those things have been real good."

Brees said late last season that when you combine that efficiency with "all the experience and wisdom, I think that just allows you to maintain your prime for longer and longer."

"I really do feel like I should be better every week and every year," Brees said.

HS prospect Maker eligible for draft, if he applies

Published in Basketball
Tuesday, 18 February 2020 09:09

High school prospect Makur Maker will be eligible for the 2020 NBA draft if he applies as an early-entry candidate, according to a memo distributed to NBA teams by the league office.

The memo also included a revised agreement to the collective bargaining agreement between the NBA and the National Basketball Players Association regarding the draft eligibility of players similar to Maker.

Moving forward, U.S.-based players who have not yet graduated high school, but otherwise meet the standard criteria of being 19 years old in the calendar year of the draft and one NBA season removed from the originally scheduled graduation date of their initial high school class, will not be eligible for that year's draft.

The intent of this clarification is to narrow the scope of players who can become draft-eligible and prevent situations in which it is advantageous to drop out of high school before getting a diploma -- something that technically would have made Maker eligible for the 2020 draft under the previous version of the rule.

Because Maker, 19, was two credits short of receiving a high school diploma from Orange (California) Lutheran High School, where he was enrolled during the 2018-19 season, he needed to petition the NBA for inclusion in the draft by submitting high school transcripts to the league office.

Maker started the current school year at a prep school in Orange County, but he moved to Hillcrest Prep in Phoenix in December. He will no longer compete for Hillcrest, now that he is allowed to enter the draft if he so chooses.

According to the new CBA language, the draft eligibility for U.S.-based players who have not graduated high school will be determined by the graduation year of the class in which they first enrolled or last enrolled -- whichever comes later.

Maker will be considered 2020 draft-eligible since he petitioned for inclusion under the previous version of the rule, but similar prospects would only be eligible for the 2021 draft if they currently are enrolled in high school. NBA teams would not be allowed to attend high school games of "draft-ineligible" players of this nature due to the "no-contact" rules, the memo clarified.

The previous lack of clarity here had caused considerable confusion among NBA teams about which high school players were draft-eligible and allowed to be scouted, but this rule clarification is not expected to have a major impact on the 2020 draft.

Since petitioning the NBA for draft eligibility in October, Maker proceeded to have several poor showings in front of executives at events such as the Tarkanian Classic and Hoophall Classic in December and January, which diminished his draft stock to the point that he is now considered a late second-round pick at best.

Maker, who was once ranked in the 30s of the ESPN 100, now finds himself at No. 77, making him increasingly likely to attend college next year, according to his guardian Ed Smith, who told ESPN that Maker will only keep his name in the draft if he is projected as a lottery pick.

Maker will have opportunities to improve his standing in front of NBA teams in April at the Iverson Classic and Nike Hoop Summit in April, at certified scouting events where a large contingent of executives will be in attendance.
