Enfinger Edges Anderson In Daytona Photo Finish

Published in Racing
Friday, 14 February 2020 21:00

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – In a three-wide thriller right to the finish line, Grant Enfinger edged out Jordan Anderson to win Friday night’s NextEra Energy Resources 250 at Daytona Int’l Speedway.

Driving for Truck Series powerhouse ThorSport Racing, Enfinger led four times for a race-high 41 laps and took the lead for good with four laps left, just before the dreaded Big One gobbled up the pack.

After contact between Todd Gilliland and Tate Fogleman sparked a 14-truck melee in the first turn, Enfinger lined up as the leader for an overtime restart, with Ross Chastain as his pusher on the inside.

In contrast, defending race winner Austin Hill gridded up outside of Enfinger with help from Toyota stablemate Derek Kraus, but the outside lane dissolved on the first lap of overtime, allowing Enfinger to pull ahead coming to the white flag as Zane Smith snaked through the pack to lead the top groove.

Heading into turn one on the final lap, Chastain started to dart high in an attempt to slingshot to the race lead, but nearly spun out when Enfinger threw a block up the banking to defend the position.

That shot his Niece Motorsports entry back through the pack, while Anderson snuck through behind Enfinger to grab the runner-up position coming onto the backstretch for the final time.

From there, Anderson worked with Enfinger to keep their pairing clear of the pack until the exit of turn four, when the owner/driver jumped high coming into the tri-oval and side-drafted Enfinger to stall out the momentum of the No. 98 Ford F-150.

Anderson moved toward the wall in an effort to escape, but Enfinger countered with a perfectly-timed door slam that broke Anderson’s run coming to the finish line and allowed him to edge ahead.

The margin of victory at the checkered flag was .01 seconds, the closest ever in the Truck Series’ 21-year history of racing at Daytona, with Enfinger collecting the spoils following his third-career win.

Friday night broke a 28-race drought for the Alabama veteran, who won last year’s regular-season title.

“It’s an unbelievable feeling,” said Enfinger in victory lane. “It’s the 100th win for Ford in the series – unbelievable for them. God blessed us with a great opportunity to come out here and pull it off tonight.

“The biggest thing is we had a really good F-150 to (win) with. I made a mistake there with about 20 to go and got hung up there in the sucker hole. I pulled up in front of Ben (Rhodes) too late, and it was either going to wreck me or put me in the middle, and that’s what happened,” Enfinger added. “It got to be about four or five laps to go, and it was time to go.

“We were able to get up in the third groove and make some stuff happen and get the lead just before that last big wreck.”

The race went six laps beyond its scheduled distance, ending after 106 tours of the 2.5-mile oval, but it was the last lap that wrote both the storybook – and heartbreaking – headlines.

While an elated Enfinger celebrated in victory lane, Anderson stood with nearly as big a smile on pit road following a second-place finish, the first top five for him in 102 Truck Series starts.

The smile didn’t mean he wasn’t wondering what could have been, however.

“Grant, what are you doing door-slamming me, man?” Anderson said with a laugh as he watched the replay of the final scramble to the finish. “I came here in 2015 and emptied my bank account to try to come down here and run. To be in a position to even go for a win at Daytona, man … I’m a kid that just wanted to go racing from South Carolina.

“I thought we set him up good. We tried to follow Ross (Chastain) there and push him. I know he got loose, and I got up on Grant’s bumper there in (turn) four and got a good run,” Anderson added. “It was like NASCAR Thunder 2003 all over again. I’m like, ‘God, I can do this!’ And I pushed him out of the way, and I thought we had it.

“So close, man! This is – Daytona, we almost won!”

Codie Rohrbaugh nearly snookered both Enfinger and Rohrbaugh with a full head of steam on the bottom coming to the stripe, but ran out of time and finished third, .07 seconds adrift of the win.

Derek Kraus rallied from losing a wheel weight in the first stage and losing a lap to finish fourth, with Natalie Decker crossing fifth and earning the highest finish by a woman in Truck Series history.

Hill dropped to sixth after restarting on the front row to kick off overtime, with Johnny Sauter seventh and Chastain hanging on for eighth at the flag. Sheldon Creed and Jason White completed the top 10.

In addition to the lap-98 Big One, a second dramatic accident marred the opening stage after Ty Majeski got upside down in turn one on the 16th rotation. Majeski was uninjured in the spectacular incident.

Four top-10 players skipping WGC-Mexico, but why?

Published in Golf
Friday, 14 February 2020 13:44

LOS ANGELES – Tiger Woods isn’t the only big name skipping next week’s WGC-Mexico Championship.

World No. 2 Brooks Koepka isn’t making the trip to Mexico City, either. Same with sixth-ranked Patrick Cantlay and 10th-ranked Justin Rose. Rickie Fowler, Jason Day and Henrik Stenson are also opting for a week off rather than a limited-field, no-cut tournament that offers guaranteed world ranking, FedExCup and Olympic points.

Tiger Woods threw a curveball when he opted to forego next week's WGC-Mexico Championship, but what does it mean about his aspirations for the season?

Woods didn’t offer any explanation why he won’t tee it up in the first WGC event of 2020, a place where he tied for 10th last year but finished 13 shots off the lead. He said all week (and reiterated again Friday afternoon) that he hadn’t yet made a decision, then simply let the commitment deadline pass without any statement. His no-show is the most curious – especially in an Olympic year – but load management is a bigger issue for the 44-year-old Woods than most.

For the rest of the skipping stars, it’s worth offering some context.

Koepka’s record at Club de Golf Chapultepec is dismal: No finish better than 27th in two appearances, and he’s playing the following week at his hometown Honda Classic.

Fowler has never cracked the top 15 there, either, and as a past champion he’s also signed up for Honda, in addition to Bay Hill and The Players.

Rose? Never better than 37th, and he skipped in 2019, too.

Stenson? A tie for 54th last year, after a no-show in 2018.

Day? Never played the WGC-Mexico, and perhaps never will.

Cantlay finished sixth there last year (11 shots back) but now will likely sit out until The Players. A message with his management team asking for an explanation wasn’t immediately returned.

A quirky course that plays 7,500 feet above sea level clearly isn’t for everyone, nor does it fall during an ideal time in the schedule. This week’s Genesis Invitational featured nine of the top 10 players in the world – the strongest non-major and non-WGC/Players field since 2007 – and many top players prefer to get in a start in Florida before heading north to The Players.

That adds up to a WGC without seven top players.

Lockie Ferguson not rushing return from calf injury

Published in Cricket
Friday, 14 February 2020 22:28

New Zealand quick Lockie Ferguson is looking to be "conservative" with his calf injury, instead of rushing back into long-format cricket and risking doing more damage.

Ferguson went down with a calf strain on Test debut, against Australia in Perth in mid-December. He returned to top-flight action on February 9, bowling 10 overs for Auckland in the domestic one-day competition, the Ford Trophy. He is set to play in the tournament's final on Sunday, and has been in touch with New Zealand coach Gary Stead about his recovery process.

"Me and Steady talk all the time - he was asking me how I fared in my first domestic game back, then he was asking me how I was going preparing for the weekend," Ferguson said, according to Stuff.co.nz. "Of course the goal is for me to get back as soon as possible, but there is so much cricket coming up this year.

"We've got a lot of white-ball stuff and I head away to the IPL as well, so it's important with a calf injury, where there's a high percentage chance of re-injury, that we be conservative.

"Sunday's [final] my focus and then I'll be looking to play some first-class cricket."

Stuff also reported that Ferguson had trained with the New Zealand side in Auckland a week ago, when they were in town for the second ODI against India. Returning to Test cricket remains his main goal, Ferguson said.

"Since I started playing professional cricket, it has been my goal to play Test cricket, because personally I feel that's the biggest challenge. I am obviously super stoked to be playing one-dayers and T20s for New Zealand, I love every moment of it, but playing red-ball has been a big goal of mine.

"On the day [of his Test debut] it wasn't to be, I only got through 11 overs, and it was really frustrating. But it's one of those things. When you bowl quick, injuries can sometimes happen."

New Zealand have a two-match Test series coming up against India later this month, but it remains to be seen if Ferguson is match fit enough to make it to that squad.

Indians 59 for 0 (Shaw 35*, Agarwal 23*) and 263 all out lead New Zealand XI (Cooper 40, Shami 3-17, Bumrah 2-18) by 87 runs

India quicks dominated on the second day of the tour game in Hamilton as they ran through the New Zealand XI to bowl them out for 235. Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah, Umesh Yadav and Navdeep Saini shared nine wickets between them, while the final wicket went to offspinner R Ashwin. Following that, openers Prithvi Shaw and Mayank Agarwal got off to a steady start in the second innings to help India gain an 87-run lead.

In reply to India's 263, Rachin Ravindra began positively despite losing his partner Will Young to Bumrah for a cheap score. Shami was the chief tormentor on the day, picking up the first of his three wickets by having Tim Seifert caught behind for 9. Finn Allen then joined Ravindra as the hosts gained some momentum, but Yadav wouldn't let it last, dismissing Ravindra for 34. Bumrah struck soon after to remove Allen as well.

There were brief stages of recovery from the New Zealand XI thanks to the middle-order contributions from Henry Cooper (40), Tom Bruce (31) and Daryl Mitchell (32) but none of them could go on to make a big score. James Neesham, walking in at No. 8, became Shami's third victim, bowled for just 1. The lower order then added 74 runs, taking the total past 200, to finish with a deficit of 28 runs. Shami finished with figures of 3 for 17, while Bumrah, Yadav and Saini picked up two apiece.

After failures in the first innings, Shaw and Agarwal were off to a rapid start, hitting a boundary-laden 35 off 25 and 23 off 17 respectively. The duo was especially severe on Scott Kuggeleijn, who had dismissed them for those low scores in the first innings, taking him for 34 runs in three overs. India finished the second day with the score on 59 for 0 in only seven overs.

New South Wales 4 for 201 (Patterson 54) trail 7 for 431 (Gotch 100*, Maddinson 95, Dean 71) by 230 runs

Wil Parker, the 17-year-old debutant legspinner, claimed two big scalps to keep Victoria on top against New South Wales at the SCG after Seb Gotch had scored his maiden first-class century.

Victoria declared on 7 fo 431 shortly before lunch moments after Gotch had brought up three figures. The New South Wales openers departed after a half-century opening stand but Kurtis Patterson, playing his first Shield match since October, and Moises Henriques both looked in fine form as they added 102 deep into the final.

Then Parker, who had bowled nicely in his first spell, returned to manufacture back-to-back breakthroughs. His maiden first-class wicket came when he slid a delivery across Patterson as he came down the pitch, the ball grazing the edge before Gotch completed the stumping. In his next over he then benefited from some significant fortune when Henriques bottom-edged a pull into his leg which ballooned to slip.

Daniel Solway and captain Peter Nevill saw out the rest of the day but New South Wales have a lengthy tail so there was considerable work to do.

Gotch and Travis Dean had resumed with Victoria well placed on 5 for 318 and carried their stand to 150 in 50 overs with Dean making his highest first-class score in 21 innings after retiring hurt yesterday following the blow in the box from Trent Copeland.

Dean eventually fell when he top edged a sweep off Steve O'Keefe while Gotch continued to carefully accumulate towards his hundred having twice fallen shortly previously in his career. The century arrived from 241 balls with a single off Liam Hatcher.

Armed with a new Duke ball, Victoria's seamers found early movement - Gotch had a difficult time behind the stumps - but it took a while to break through as Daniel Hughes and Nick Larkin settled in. Scott Boland claimed the first breakthrough when he trapped Larkin lbw then Will Sutherland, who began with four consecutive maidens either side of a brief rain delay, produced an excellent delivery to beat Hughes' inside edge.

Patterson, recovered from the quad strain which has disrupted his season, was soon into his stride has he played elegantly off front and back foot while Henriques continued the form he showed before the Big Bash. However, just when they were taking the competition leaders into a position of parity, Parker popped up to produce a moment he'll remember.

Western Australia 4 for 165 (Marsh 63) trail South Australia 389 (Cooper 99, Weatherald 60, Sayers 58*, Nielsen 53 Moody 4-86) by 224 runs

A grinding day at the Adelaide Oval ended with South Australia holding the advantage having whittled out Western Australia's top order including the key wicket of Shaun Marsh.

There was a landmark moment for Chadd Sayers when he claimed his 300th first-class wicket trapping Marcus Stoinis lbw shortly after he had ended a blockathon from Cameron Bancroft who was bowled shouldering arms for 25 off 155 deliveries.

Marsh, who was named the men's domestic player of the season at the Cricket Australia last week, had compiled a steady 63 when he fell under-edging a pull to a very wide delivery from Wes Agar who had taken the title of emerging player.

At 4 for 127 when Marsh departed Western Australia were wobbling but Cameron Green and Josh Philippe guided them to the close as the theme of sedate scoring continued with the pair adding an unbroken 38 in 18 overs.

Sayers had earlier extended South Australia's first innings to 389 as he finished unbeaten on 58 having added 74 for the ninth wicket with Dan Worrall.

Duck, duck, duck as Tasmania batting woes continue

Published in Cricket
Saturday, 15 February 2020 00:29

Tasmania 78 and 4 for 72 trail Queensland 257 (Khawaja 56, Bird 4-68) by 107 runs

Tasmania's horror match with the bat continued at the Gabba as they lost three second-innings wickets without a run on the board to leave them facing an innings defeat against Queensland.

A battling half-century from Usman Khawaja and handy lower-order contributions had taken Queensland to a lead of 179 after they had dismantled Tasmania for 78 on the opening day.

In reply, Alex Doolan, Jordan Silk (who bagged a pair) and Jake Doran all fell for ducks against Michael Neser and Jack Wildermuth.

They regained some composure as Charlie Wakim and Ben McDermott added 72 but Wakim was pinned lbw by Mitchell Swepson late in the day.

Queensland were already in the lead overnight but Tasmania mounted something of a fightback as they chipped away. Bryce Street's 171-ball stay ended when he edged Jackson Bird and Sam Heazlett was given caught down the leg side.

Khawaja held the innings together with his second Shield half-century of the season before the hard work ended when a booming drive was edged to second slip. Cameron Gannon and Mark Steketee chipped in with 20s from Nos. 9 and 10. The innings was wrapped up by the offspin of Beau Webster who, in a game dominated by the seamers, finished with 3 for 44.

MVP Bridges leads U.S. to Rising Stars victory

Published in Basketball
Friday, 14 February 2020 20:58

CHICAGO -- Miles Bridges soared like his boss in Chicago. Zion Williamson delivered his share of punishing dunks, even damaging the rim.

It all added up to a high-flying start to the NBA's All-Star Weekend.

Bridges scored 20 points and took MVP honors, Eric Paschall added 23, and the U.S. beat the World 151-131 in the Rising Stars Challenge on Friday night.

Bridges has been a bright spot for Charlotte in a difficult season. The Hornets are 11th in the Eastern Conference at 18-36. But the second-year pro put on a show in owner Michael Jordan's old home, and was presented the MVP trophy by Hall of Famer and Chicago product Isiah Thomas.

"We wanted to come out and play hard in the Rising Stars and show what Charlotte is about -- me, Devonte' [Graham] and PJ [Washington]," Bridges said. "And that's what we did. I didn't have any extra motivation, really, I wouldn't say that. But MJ putting Chicago on the map, it definitely plays a big part, though."

The Cleveland Cavaliers' Collin Sexton had 21 points, Atlanta Hawks All-Star Trae Young added 18 and Chicago product Kendrick Nunn of the Miami Heat chipped in with 16. Williamson scored 14 and had the baskets inside the United Center shaking whether he made or missed.

RJ Barrett of the New York Knicks led the World with 27 points, and the Washington Wizards' Brandon Clarke scored 22.

The annual showcase of the top rookies and second-year players helped tip off the first All-Star Weekend in the Windy City since 1988, when Jordan dazzled the home crowd at the old Chicago Stadium. Back then, "His Airness" edged Dominique Wilkins in a slam dunk contest that arguably remains the standard and scored 40 points to lead the East over the West in the All-Star Game.

As for Friday's game, as expected, there were plenty of flashy dunks and not much in the way of defense.

Dallas Mavericks All-Star Luka Doncic drew a big roar from the crowd when he banked a 3 from half court just before the halftime buzzer to send the World to the locker room with an 81-71 lead. Bridges had the fans cheering late in the third quarter when he flipped the ball off the glass and jammed it during the quarter when the U.S. took control.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Breaker of rims: Zion damages hoop with dunk

Published in Basketball
Friday, 14 February 2020 19:39

CHICAGO -- United Center rims proved no match for rookie Zion Williamson on Friday.

After catching a lob pass from Team USA teammate Trae Young in the Rising Stars Challenge, Williamson slammed down a two-handed jam that caused the rim to bend.

At halftime of the NBA All-Star Weekend event, United Center employees had to bring out a ladder and realign the basket. That's the force of a 284-pound player who posted a 45-inch vertical leap in college.

After the game, Williamson said he heard about damaging the rim from his teammates. He said he didn't hear a crack when he dunked.

"We went into the halftime, and my teammates started telling me about it," the New Orleans Pelicans rookie said. "I don't know which dunk it was on, but I don't think it was me."

It wasn't the only Williamson dunk that brought the crowd to its feet Friday. He wowed fans and left the backboard shaking with a jam off a between-the-legs pass from teammate Ja Morant. Williamson said his favorite play of the game was when Morant threw him a lob from half court, and he slammed it home.

The two rookie stars -- who went Nos. 1 and 2 in the 2019 NBA draft -- were AAU teammates in South Carolina.

"It was crazy, honestly," Williamson said. "I keep thinking never in a million years would I have thought we'd have been in this game or been in the situation we're in."

Morant agreed.

"The one I threw from behind half court, to Zion," the Memphis Grizzlies rookie said when asked for his favorite play with Williamson. "Tough pass, I got it there. He dunked it, made me look good."

Williamson finished with 14 points and seven rebounds in just under 20 minutes as Team USA defeated Team World 151-131.

Dunks were a theme throughout the night. The teams finished with 41 combined slams (21 by USA and 20 by World). Rui Hachimura and Brandon Clarke led the way with six each.

Ultimately, this exhibition game was a chance for Williamson to wow fans with his backboard-bending buckets. It was also an opportunity for Chicago fans to see Luka Doncic pull up over Young from half court.

Because it was an exhibition, Rising Stars MVP Miles Bridges felt comfortable tweeting an illustration of a gamer going from slouching to sitting up and focused during halftime -- something he said he'd never do in a real contest.

"You shouldn't allow tweeting during [regular-season] games," Bridges said. "The World Team was killing us, and we were like, 'Let's play for real.' So I just tweeted that, just trying to be funny. It's ironic that we came out and beat them by 20."

The Rising Stars Challenge got off to a sleepy start in the first quarter Friday, and Team World took a 10-point halftime lead despite equipment damage courtesy of New Orleans Pelicans power forward Zion Williamson.

But Charlotte Hornets small forward Miles Bridges flipped a switch in the second half, and Team USA ultimately turned the game around by 39 points to take a 151-131 victory in a showcase of the top rookies and second-year players.

We graded all 20 players who were able to participate on a national stage at Chicago's United Center on NBA All-Star Weekend.

Team USA

Zion Williamson
New Orleans Pelicans
Forward | Grade: A

Game stats
14 points | 7-11 FGs | 2 rebounds | 1 assist

Analysis
About the only blemish to Williamson's All-Star Weekend debut was that he couldn't put down one of the three contest-worthy dunks he attempted in the closing seconds of a blowout win. Before that, Williamson had made seven of his eight shot attempts, five of them dunks. Oh, and did I mention he literally tilted the hoop? That's an easy A, in my book.

Trae Young
Atlanta Hawks
Guard | Grade: A-

Game stats
18 points | 4 rebounds | 7 assists | 1 steal

Analysis
The people demanded deep 3-pointers from Young and he obliged, hitting one over RJ Barrett from the edge of the oversized logo and another in the final minutes from similar distance but to the side of midcourt. Though Young shot just 3-of-5 inside the arc, he handed out a game-high seven assists.

Ja Morant
Memphis Grizzlies
Guard | Grade: A

Game stats
10 points | 5 rebounds | 6 assists | 5-9 FGs

Analysis
Nobody needs to tell Morant how to entertain in an exhibition setting. The No. 2 overall pick enjoyed the opportunity to play with top pick Williamson, setting him up for four alley-oop dunks (as well as a fifth to Memphis teammate Jaren Jackson Jr.). The best of them came when Morant went in between his legs in midair before dishing off to Williamson above the rim, and another was thrown from beyond half court. When Morant kept the ball himself, he had a 360 dunk and another he pulled back and dunked hard with two hands.

Jaren Jackson Jr.
Memphis Grizzlies
Forward | Grade: B-

Game stats
12 points | 4-7 FGs | 3-4 FTs | 7 rebounds

Analysis
A 30-foot 3-pointer would have been the highlight of Jackson's night, but it rimmed out. He shot 1-of-4 from beyond the arc but made all three of his 2-point attempts and grabbed seven rebounds.

Kendrick Nunn
Miami Heat
Guard | Grade: A-

Game stats
16 points | 2 steals | 2-4 3s | 7-11 FGs

Analysis
For a moment, it looked as though the Chicago native might win MVP in his homecoming. Nunn's best stretch came midway through the fourth quarter when, after an extended dribbling exhibition, he stepped back into a 3-pointer and then followed it with a steal and a run-out dunk.

Eric Paschall
Golden State Warriors
Forward | Grade: A

Game stats
23 points | 1 steal | 1-1 3s | 10-13 FGs

Analysis
You can take the rookie out of Villanova but you can't take the Villanova out of the rookie. Paschall used an old-school game to score a team-high 23 points on 10-of-13 shooting, doing much of his damage from just inside the arc. Paschall was so hot the USA isolated him against switches on consecutive plays at the end of the third quarter, resulting in a shooting foul but then a turnover.

Miles Bridges
Charlotte Hornets
Forward | Grade: A

Game stats
20 points | 5 rebounds | 5 assists | 3 steals

Analysis
Bridges' 20 points, 5 assists and 3 steals earned him MVP honors. Bridges anchored the USA second unit that pulled away in the second half, outscoring the World team by 33 points while on the court. Bridges did it with style, turning off the "no fun" sign after halftime with a windmill dunk and a pass off the backboard to himself for a dunk that was one of the night's top highlights.

Devonte' Graham
Charlotte Hornets
Guard | Grade: B

Game stats
6 rebounds | 5 assists | 3-7 3s | 9 points

Analysis
While Graham wasn't a prominent figure in the USA second unit, going 3-of-7 on 3-pointers that made up all of his shot attempts, his five assists did help set up his teammates.

PJ Washington
Charlotte Hornets
Forward | Grade: B

Game stats
1 steal | 8 points | 4-5 FGs | 5 rebounds

Analysis
The lowest-scoring member of the USA second unit, Washington attempted only five shots in 20 minutes but made four of them. The best of the bunch was a dunk that left the basket shaking.

Collin Sexton
Cleveland Cavaliers
Guard | Grade: B+

Game stats
21 points | 5 rebounds | 3 assists | 1 steal

Analysis
With the exception of a step-back 3 on a switch, it wasn't flashy, but Sexton had 21 points on 9-of-14 shooting as part of the dominant USA second unit. Apart from that 3, his most impressive play was an instinctive cut that set up an uncontested floater in the paint.

Team World

Luka Doncic
Dallas Mavericks (Slovenia)
Guard | Grade: B+

Game stats
16 points | 5 assists | 1 steal | 4-9 3s

Analysis
Along with Young, Doncic is one of two players pulling double duty this weekend in both the Rising Stars game and Sunday's marquee event. Given that busy schedule, it's no surprise Doncic played at something less than full speed, though that didn't stop him from delivering 16 points and five assists. Most spectacularly, Doncic ended the first half by firing and hitting from beyond half court -- despite having enough time to still leave some on the clock after the shot swished through. Now that's showmanship.

RJ Barrett
New York Knicks (Canada)
Guard | Grade: F

Game stats
27 points | 6 rebounds | 5 assists | 3 steals

Analysis
Barrett led all scorers with 27 points on 11-of-17 shooting and delivered a handful of highlights, including a steal that resulted in a pick-six finish on the other end. He even finished with his right hand, something of a work in progress for the southpaw. Yet Barrett earns an automatic failing grade for fouling Williamson to prevent his former Duke roommate from dunking. There's no place for that in an All-Star setting.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander
Oklahoma City Thunder (Canada)
Guard | Grade: B-

Game stats
16 points | 3 assists | 1 block | 3 rebounds

Analysis
There were two different Gilgeous-Alexanders on Friday. One focused on shooting pull-up 3s with little success, going 1-of-7 from beyond the arc. The other glided to the hoop for a variety of running layups, making 6 of 8 2-pointers. Gilgeous-Alexander also showcased his defensive potential by blocking a Morant fadeaway.

Nickeil Alexander-Walker
New Orleans Pelicans (Canada)
Guard | Grade: C-

Game stats
4 assists | 1 steal | 1 block | 6 points

Analysis
Given Alexander-Walker played more minutes (20) than he has in the past three weeks, it's perhaps no surprise that he looked a bit rusty as a shooter. Alexander-Walker missed 10 of his 12 shot attempts, 10 of which came from beyond the arc. He did hand out four assists, including a drop pass to Brandon Clarke for a layup.

Brandon Clarke
Memphis Grizzlies (Canada)
Forward | Grade: A

Game stats
22 points | 8 rebounds | 1 steal | 11-15 FGs

Analysis
Had the World team won, Clarke would have been a strong contender for MVP. It's no surprise that Clarke, shooting 65% inside the 3-point line this season, went 11-of-14 on 2-point attempts. He had a powerful two-hand finish and went way above the rim to finish a Doncic alley-oop in addition to grabbing a game-high eight rebounds.

Rui Hachimura
Washington Wizards (Japan)
Forward | Grade: B+

Game stats
14 points | 4 assists | 1 steal | 7-11 FGs

Analysis
A popular target above the rim for his World teammates, particularly early in the game, Hachimura dunked home six of his seven field goals. That could have been even more had Hachimura finished an alley-oop from Clarke, but he reciprocated with a nice extra pass to set up a Clarke dunk on the next play -- one of four assists on the night.

Moritz Wagner
Washington Wizards (Germany)
Center | Grade: B

Game stats
16 points | 2 steals | 1-2 3s | 6-9 FGs

Analysis
With 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting, Wagner was the only member of a weak World bench to reach double-figure scoring. However, he might need to adapt to an All-Star style of play. Wagner played hard on defense, which resulted in a strip of Sexton and a forced Paschall miss but also back-to-back fouls at the end of the third quarter.

Svi Mykhailiuk
Detroit Pistons (Ukraine)
Guard | Grade: D+

Game stats
6 points | 4 rebounds | 2 assists | 2-9 3s

Analysis
The night began ominously for Mykhailiuk when he airballed his opening 3-point attempt. A later try caught nothing but glass as Mykhailiuk -- a 42% 3-point shooter this season -- went 2-of-9 beyond the arc. He also just missed a highlight going up to try to tip-dunk a teammate's miss. Mykhailiuk did contribute a nice left-hand pass to set up Wagner out of a pick-and-roll, one of his two assists.

Josh Okogie
Minnesota Timberwolves (Nigeria)
Guard | Grade: C+

Game stats
5 assists | 1 block | 5 points | 3 rebounds

Analysis
Serving as a playmaker for the World team's second unit, Okogie handed out five assists, equal to his season high. He also showcased his defensive prowess by blocking Nunn on a step-back 3 attempt. However, the ballhandling also led to a game-high five turnovers.

Nicolo Melli
New Orleans Pelicans (Italy)
Forward | Grade: B-

Game stats
1-2 3s | 3 points | 5 rebounds | 2 assists
