Taylor braves blustery conditions to win Pebble Beach Pro-Am

Published in Golf
Sunday, 09 February 2020 10:04

Via a roller-coaster round of 70 that included five birdies, three bogeys, an eagle and a double, a windblown Nick Taylor stayed upright long enough to win the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am on Sunday. Here’s how Taylor fought his way to the finish line on a difficult day on the Monterey Peninsula:

Leaderboard: Taylor (-19), Kevin Streelman (-15), Phil Mickelson (-14), Jason Day (-11)

What it means: This is Taylor’s second PGA Tour victory and his first in nearly five years, since his breakthrough at the 2015 Sanderson Farms Championship. Up one to start the day after sleeping on the first 54-hole lead of his career, Taylor played his first six holes in 4 under, going birdie-birdie-eagle at Nos. 4-6. Up five over Mickelson at the turn, he sure managed to make it interesting. He played a four-hole stretch from Nos. 11-14 in 4 over with two bogeys and a double. Luckily for him, Mickelson was likewise leaking oil, and the lead was never less than two. Taylor then steadied himself with a chip-in birdie at 15 and put the tournament away for good with another circle at 17. Taylor is the first player to go wire to wire at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am in 15 years, since Mickelson did so in 2005. With the win, he secures PGA Tour membership through the 2021-22 season and earns invitations to this year’s Masters, Players and PGA Championship.

Biggest disappointment: Just one back to start the final round, Mickelson got off to an encouraging start, with three birdies in his first six holes. Then the wheels came off. He played his final 11 holes in 5 over par to fall into solo third behind Streelman. A two-way tie for second or better would have seen Mickelson re-enter the world's top 50 and qualify for the WGC-Mexico Championship. He'll have another opportunity to do so next week at Riviera. The defending champion at Pebble, Mickelson in his last five starts at this event has finished second-65th-second-first-third.

Round of the day: On a day with a final-round scoring average of 74.43, Jordan Spieth signed for a 5-under 67 that included three birdies on each nine and just a single bogey. The T-9 finish is Spieth’s first top-10 in a full-field event since the Northern Trust in August, and it should be enough to get him back in the world's top 50, qualifying him for the WGC-Mexico.

Best of the rest: Streelman played his way into second with a 4-under 68 and for the second time in three years won the Pro-Am portion of the event alongside amateur partner Larry Fitzgerald. Maverick McNealy also signed for 68 to secure his best finish on Tour, a tie for fifth at 9 under par.

Shots of the day: Taylor’s two holeouts. From the greenside bunker for eagle at the par-5 sixth:

And from short of the green for birdie at the par-4 15th:

And here's the birdie at 17 that put the tournament away for good:

Honorable mention: This ridiculous up-and-down from Mickelson from some 40 yards over the back of the 13th green:

Quote of the day: “That was amazing. Up-and-down day. You know, I believed I could do it, because I've done it before, but to do it in that fashion, playing with Phil, obviously gives me a lot of confidence going forward.” – Taylor

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – Jordan Spieth is in, Phil Mickelson is still out.

That’s the unofficial projected update for the WGC-Mexico Championship field in two weeks.

Spieth’s hard-closing 5-under-par 67 Sunday earned him a two-way tie for ninth at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. That’s expected to be good enough to move him among the top 50 in Sunday evening’s release of the newest Official World Golf Ranking, which would earn him a spot in the first World Golf Championships event of the calendar year.

Mickelson? He needed to make that last 8-foot putt for birdie at Pebble Beach’s 18th hole Sunday to crack the top 50. He missed, but that doesn’t mean he won’t make it to Mexico. There’s yet another top-50 world-ranking deadline next week. Mickelson has a chance to move up again at this coming week’s Genesis Invitational.

Mickelson closed with a 74 and finished solo third in his bid to win the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am for a record sixth time. He finished five shots behind the winner, Nick Taylor.

The field for the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play on March 25-29 will be set by the world rankings 10 days prior to the event. The top 64 automatically qualify.

Spieth will move from No. 55 to No. 49 in the new world rankings, according to projections. Mickelson will move from No. 72 to No. 55.

Here are the complete purse and FedExCup point breakdowns for champion Nick Taylor and the rest of the players who made the cut at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am:

Galaxy's 'Chicharito' training alone amid visa wait

Published in Soccer
Sunday, 09 February 2020 16:27

The LA Galaxy's newest high-profile addition, Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez, says he is trying to remain patient as he continues to deal with a work visa delay as the regular season fast approaches.

His participation with his new Galaxy teammates has been limited since the team acquired the Mexico international from Spanish side Sevilla last month and signed him to a three-year deal on Jan. 21.

"We are waiting for the visa," Chicharito told reporters as the Galaxy unveiled its new safe-standing area at Dignity Health Sports Park. "Like you saw already, I'm training apart [from the team]. We need to respect the process. So we're going to keep waiting. Hopefully it's sooner than later [that] the visa is going to come."

A league source told ESPN that they expect the situation to be resolved this week.

The popular member of the Mexico national team has played for European soccer powers like Manchester United, Bayer Leverkusen and Real Madrid, in addition to West Ham and Sevilla. He has 52 goals in 109 appearances with Mexico and has played in three World Cups.

"I need to be patient because it's out of my hands and I don't work in that," he said. "A lot of people are doing the best they can so I can get my visa as soon as possible. They are doing an incredible job. Hopefully I can get it [Sunday] or next week or whenever. I'm going to be ready with my fitness even if I'm not training with the team."

The Galaxy have two more preseason games remaining, Saturday against Toronto FC and Feb. 22 against the Chicago Fire. They open the regular season on the road against the Houston Dynamo on Feb. 29 (stream all out-of-market matches live on ESPN+).

Inter go top of Serie A after wild Milan derby win

Published in Soccer
Sunday, 09 February 2020 14:01

Inter Milan went top of Serie A on Sunday after completing a remarkable second half comeback to overturn a two-goal deficit and beat AC Milan 4-2.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic set up Ante Rebic's opener before scoring with a header, as Milan held a deserved 2-0 lead at the break.

But a Marcelo Brozovic volley and Matias Vecino strike in the space of two minutes saw Inter draw level at the start of the second half, before Stefan de Vrij's header put them in front in the 70th minute.

Ibrahimovic hit the post with a late header as Milan pressed for an equaliser, but Antonio Conte's side sealed the win in stoppage time through a Romelu Lukaku header.

Inter move into first place on goal difference, after catching Juventus on 54 points following their 2-1 defeat by Hellas Verona on Saturday, while Milan are 10th with 32 points.

Conte admitted Inter can now dare to dream of the title ahead of a week that will test his team's credentials as they host Napoli in the Coppa Italia semifinal first leg on Wednesday, before travelling to third-placed Lazio on Sunday, who are one point behind them in the standings.

"It's still very early to talk about something we can only dream of for now," the Inter coach said.

"We can have a dream. It's a very intense period for us coming up and after that we'll have a better idea of our potential and our real capabilities.

"We must face important matches, starting from Wednesday's with Napoli, then Lazio, who have really strengthened over the years.

"We can't achieve everything from one day to the next, but we are building. These guys proved they have great strength and guts today."

Milan started strongly, coming close when Hakan Calhanoglu smashed a low shot off the post from outside the box. They took a deserved lead five minutes before the break when Ibrahimovic headed a lofted pass into the path of Rebic for a tap-in.

Ibrahimovic then got a goal of his own in first half stoppage time, heading in at the back post after Franck Kessie directed a corner into his path, making the Swede the oldest player to score in the famous fixture at the age of 38 years and 129 days.

However, Inter completed a stunning comeback in the space of just two minutes at the start of the second half.

Brozovic showed superb technique to guide in a volley from the edge of the area on the 51st minute, before Alexis Sanchez sprung the offside trap and pulled a pass back for Vecino to fire home the equaliser.

Conte's side completed the turnaround when De Vrij stooped to guide home a header from a corner, and substitute Christian Eriksen was inches away from scoring his first goal for the club when his long-range free kick came back off the crossbar.

Ibrahimovic powered a header off the post from point-blank range in the final minute of regulation time, before Lukaku made sure of the three points by heading in his 17th league goal of the season in stoppage time.

"We stopped playing, the team stopped believing, we stopped pressing, didn't pass it around enough," said Ibrahimovic.

"From the equaliser onwards, everything collapsed."

Inter have now won four consecutive Milan derbies in Serie A for the first time since 1983.

Messi sets up three goals as Barca beat Betis

Published in Soccer
Sunday, 09 February 2020 14:01

Lionel Messi had a trio of assists as Barcelona kept pace with La Liga leaders Real Madrid thanks to a 3-2 win over Real Betis in a match that saw both teams finish with 10 players.

Barcelona came into the match trailing Madrid by six points after the leaders beat Osasuna earlier on Sunday and found themselves trailing Betis early when Sergio Canales converted a penalty for hand ball on Clement Lenglet.

The visitors struck right back with an inspired goal to draw level as Frenkie de Jong settled a perfect Messi long ball with his chest and volleyed past Betis keeper Joel Robles with his second touch.

Barca looked ready to add to their lead, but a bad giveaway in midfield sprang the hosts on the counter-attack finished off with a sumptuous strike from Nabil Fekir to put Betis up 2-1.

Betis were seconds away from taking the lead into the dressing room until a free kick into the area fell to Sergio Busquets and he cooly settled it and beat Robles to again draw Barcelona level right before the referee blew the half-time whistle.

Robles came up with two big saves against Messi in the opening 15 minutes of the second half as Barcelona dominated possession but could not find the go-ahead goal.

Lenglet finally headed Barcelona into the lead shortly after the 70-minute mark, out jumping his defender to redirect a Messi cross into the back of the net to give his team a deserved lead.

Both teams were reduced to to 10 players shortly after the go-ahead goal for Barca, as Fekir was given his second yellow card for dissent and Lenglet also getting a second booking for a foul on Joaquin to set up a tense finish.

The result means Barca finish the day exactly where they started, three points behind Real Madrid, and puts an end to a hard week for the defending champions that saw Ousmane Dembele sustain a serious injury, Messi lash out at sporting director Eric Abidal and the team losing 1-0 to Athletic Bilbao to exit the Copa del Rey.

"This is a hugely significant win for us because Betis are a great team and were being roared on by their fans at home," Barca coach Quique Setien told a news conference.

"This is a very important victory because it keeps us near the top of the table and it will give us a huge psychological boost."

Barca, who hired Setien last month after sacking Ernesto Valverde, had not won away from home in the league since beating Atletico Madrid on Dec. 1 and were smarting from a recent defeat at Valencia as well as the last-gasp loss in the Cup to Bilbao.

"It was so important for us to win after losing in the Cup in the last minute but we just had to keep playing in the same way and that's what we did," said Barca's Sergi Roberto.

"It was vital that we found our form and started winning away from home again so we go home feeling happy."

Meanwhile, Setien's opposite number Rubi was left fuming after the match that Roberto was not sent off for a second foul late in the first half.

Rubi said: "Barcelona should have been down to 10 men in the 38th minute, there's no discussion about that. How was that not another yellow card [for Roberto]?

"Although I accept there are some moments they may argue about, too. But it hurts a lot. If they go down to 10, it's a different game."

Messi 8/10 as Barca win five-goal thriller at Betis

Published in Soccer
Sunday, 09 February 2020 15:00

Barcelona twice came from behind to beat Real Betis 3-2 in a thriller at the Benito Villamarin on Sunday, as they moved back to within three points of La Liga leaders Real Madrid.

A Sergio Canales penalty and a Nabil Fekir goal had twice given the home side the advantage but Barca responded each time, first through Frenkie de Jong and then through Sergio Busquets on the stroke of half-time.

Defender Clement Lenglet then headed Barca into the lead in the 72nd minute before the game descended into chaos, with Fekir and Lenglet both receiving their marching orders for picking up second bookings in a frantic finale.

Positives

It's difficult to state the importance of this Barcelona win for so many reasons. At 2-1 down, they risked slipping six points behind Madrid, who won earlier in the day at Osasuna. They were also facing a third straight defeat away from home in all competitions, following losses at Valencia and Athletic Bilbao. To come from behind and win on the road will provide a huge confidence boost, especially with trips to Napoli and Real Madrid to come next.

At the heart of the win, once again, was Lionel Messi. While the goals came from rare sources, the Argentine was the common denominator: he set them all up. Along with De Jong, he was Barca's best player and the Catalans won't worry too much about his bizarre dry streak in front of goal in La Liga. He's had nearly 30 shots in his last three league matches without scoring.

Negatives

Barca were exposed at the back by Betis, and their lack of squad depth means they are likely to continue to suffer in defence. Lenglet's red card means he will be banned for next week's game against Getafe, although Gerard Pique will be back from his suspension.

Manager rating out of 10

6 -- Quique Setien mixed the formation up once again, opting for a 4-4-2 with a diamond midfield on his return to Betis, who he coached for two years until last summer. Things didn't go well in the first half but his substitutions helped steady things after the break.

Player ratings (1-10; 10 = best, players introduced after 70 minutes get no rating)

GK Marc-Andre ter Stegen, 6 -- Could do little about either goal in the first half (a penalty and a really good Fekir finish) and was once again really good with his feet.

DF Nelson Semedo, 6 -- Playing with more confidence following a good run of form, although he was slightly restricted in an attacking sense here with Sergi Roberto ahead of him.

DF Samuel Umtiti, 5 -- Backed off Fekir for Betis' second goal, allowing his former Lyon teammate a free shot on goal. Struggled at times in a right-sided role filling in for suspended Pique.

DF Clement Lenglet, 5 -- An eventful night for the Frenchman. Gave away an early penalty for handball but made up for it by heading Barca into a 3-2 lead. Was then sent off for a second booking, though, for a foul on Joaquin.

DF Junior Firpo, 5 -- A surprise pick at left-back against his former side but didn't even make it to the hour mark before being replaced by Alba.

MF Sergio Busquets, 7 -- As well as providing the base for Barca's midfield, he also pushed forward whenever possible. That meant he was in the right place at the right time to prod home Barca's equaliser when the ball fell to him from a Messi free kick.

MF Sergi Roberto, 5 -- Dallied on the ball too much and was caught in possession too many times. That led to too many fouls and one booking, which very easily could have become two.

MF Frenkie de Jong, 8 -- Started and finished the move which led to the first goal on a really good night for the Dutchman. Assertive in possession, good on the ball and direct when he had to be.

MF Arturo Vidal, 4 -- Gave the ball away for the second Betis goal and was later booked for a really nasty challenge on Fekir. Did not look happy when he was then taken off early in the second half, but he could have few complaints.

FW Lionel Messi, 8 -- Came close to scoring on several occasions, twice denied by Joel Robles and later chipping wide with an effort which drew parallels with the goal he scored at the Benito Villamarin last season. In the end, had to make do with being Barca's chief creator, setting up all the goals and generally being involved with everything good his side did.

FW Antoine Griezmann, 6 -- Worked hard and helped out in defence but didn't offer nearly enough in the final third. With Luis Suarez and Ousmane Dembele out, Barca need more quality from the World Cup winner.

Substitutes

MF Arthur, 6 -- Did well when he came on, keeping the ball and looking to create in the final third.

DF Jordi Alba, 6 -- A bit more active than Junior but didn't have a huge amount to do in the half an hour he was involved.

MF Ivan Rakitic, N/R -- A late replacement for Griezmann as Barca reshuffled following Lenglet's dismissal.

Former Australia fast bowlers Craig McDermott and Sharon Tredrea have been inducted into the Australian cricket Hall of Fame.

McDermott played 71 Tests and 138 ODIs between 1984 and 1996, spearheading Australia's attack during the team's rejuvenation under Allan Border.

Tredrea was regarded as one of the quickest bowlers to play the women's game. She appeared in 10 Tests and 31 ODIs between 1975 and 1988 including four World Cups.

"The selection committee considered a number of nominees to ultimately choose two of the best players Australia has produced for their contributions to club, state and international cricket," Peter King, the chairman of the Hall of Fame, said. "Sharon and Craig are well deserved inductees into the Australian Cricket Hall of Fame to join an elite group of people who have given so much to cricket, the game we love."

"Sharon was a trailblazer of the women's game during her career at a time when opportunities for our women's cricketers were few and there was little or no funding available to them."

"She was a fierce competitor on the field who always strived for the ultimate performance but was equally gracious off the field.

"Craig remains one of Australia's standout fast bowlers after a stellar playing and coaching career. He endured his fair share of injury given the rigours of pace bowling over a long period of time but fought back each time, highlighting his mental and physical toughness.

"Craig led the Australian attack through a difficult period of recovery under Allan Border, ultimately starting the following eras of success for the Australian men's team."

McDermott, who made his debut as a 20-year-old, had an especially impressive record against England with 84 wickets at 26.30 from 17 Tests including his career-best 8 for 97 at the WACA in 1991 and a haul of 32 wickets in the 1994-95 series.

After his playing career McDermott returned to the game as a coach with Australia's Centre of Excellence during a time when Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and James Pattinson were emerging and in 2011 became Australia's fast-bowling coach.

Tredrea had impressive all-round figures, average 31.45 with the bat in Tests and 26.13 with the ball alongside 27.78 in the bat in ODIs and 16.28 with the ball. Her best Test return of 4 for 22 came against New Zealand at Adelaide in 1979 in a match where she claimed 7 for 47 overall.

The best player from the Victoria women's team is given the Sharon Tredrea Award.

Grizzlies waive Waiters days after Heat trade

Published in Basketball
Sunday, 09 February 2020 14:21

The Memphis Grizzlies have waived Dion Waiters, the team announced Sunday.

Memphis acquired the guard as part of a three-team trade with the Miami Heat and Minnesota Timberwolves on Thursday.

Waiters played only three games for the Heat following three suspensions this season, including one for taking cannabis-infused gummies on the team plane and needing emergency medical attention when that flight landed in Los Angeles.

Memphis will owe Waiters $4.2 million over the next three seasons. If they don't elect to use the stretch provision, the Grizzlies will have a $12.1 million cap hit this season and a $12.65 million hit next season, according to ESPN's Bobby Marks.

Waiters, 28, averages 13.2 points on 41 percent shooting from the field for his career.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Suns waiving guard Tyler Johnson, sources say

Published in Basketball
Sunday, 09 February 2020 17:04

The Phoenix Suns are waiving guard Tyler Johnson, league sources told ESPN.

Johnson, 27, is in the final year of a four-year deal and is still owed $7 million of his $19.25 million contract for the 2019-20 season.

Johnson has averaged 5.7 points in 16 minutes per game for the Suns this season. Phoenix planned to move on from Johnson after the season, and released him with the understanding that there wouldn't be much of a role for him the rest of the season.

Johnson spent parts of his first five NBA seasons in Miami before getting traded to the Suns in 2018. He has averaged 10.5 points, 3.2 rebounds and 2.4 assists in his career, which began as an undrafted player out of Fresno State.

There's expected to be interest in signing Johnson in the marketplace.
