Australia 7 for 132 (Mooney 50, Glenn 2-18) beat England 7 for 116 (Brunt 23*, Molineux 3-19) by 16 runs

A brilliant bowling performance from Australia young duo of Sophie Molineux and Tayla Vlaeminck has put Australia into the tri-series final against India after England were strangled in the middle overs chasing just 133 at the Junction Oval.

Molineux took 3 for 19 off the back of Vlaeminck's two early breakthroughs in the powerplay. Jess Jonassen also bowled a superb spell as England not only failed to chase down the total but they also fell short of the 124 needed to stay ahead of India on net run-rate after all three teams were tied on the table with two wins each from four matches.

Earlier, Australia's innings was held together by a calm and skillful half-century from Beth Mooney in the face of a top-order collapse against England's spin twins. Sophie Ecclestone and Sarah Glenn bowled superbly to take 4 for 37 between them from eight overs to leave Australia in a huge hole. But Mooney's defiance, plus a handy 24 from Rachael Haynes late in the innings gave Australia a defendable total of 7 for 132.

Australia will now meet India in the final on Wednesday at the Junction Oval.

Healy's horror run continue

Healy's last T20I innings prior to this series was a women's world record of 148 not out against Sri Lanka back in October last year. In this series, she has scored just 11 runs in four innings and yet again she fell to Katherine Brunt. After just three balls she pulled a length ball straight down the throat of Dani Wyatt who was perfectly placed at deep midwicket. Brunt has now claimed Healy eight times in T20Is. The spin of Ecclestone and Glenn then took control. Their lengths were outstanding, hitting the top of stumps consistently but they mixed their pace to cause Australia all sorts of issues with three big guns clean bowled. Ash Gardner was undone by Ecclestone, deceived completely in flight running down the track. Meg Lanning was bowled misreading length from Glenn after struggling to rotate the strike, while Ellyse Perry tried to create a cut shot from an Ecclestone arm ball that zeroed in on off stump. It left Australia 4 for 79 in the 13th over.

Mooney shines

Rather than punching balls to fielders in the ring for no reward, Mooney was prepared to drop and run with soft hands and wait for the bad balls to come. Any width that was offered she was able to carve through and over the offside. She made her second half-century of the tournament from just 39 balls with six boundaries. But she too made an error in judgement against Glenn trying to pull a ball that skidded low and crashed into the stumps. But Haynes picked up the slack after a lean summer. She made a valuable 24 from 21 with a six and a four late in the innings to ensure the total ticked up over 130.

Valuable Vlaeminck

Perry noted during the week that extra pace would be a weapon in the T20 World Cup after Vlaeminck took 3 for 13 against India in Canberra last weekend. Vlaeminck's injury history has seen the Australian hierarchy use her sparingly in this series, playing just one game per weekend. She was badly missed against India on Saturday and proved why with a rapid spell that changed the game. England were cruising at none for 21 in the fourth over. Vlaeminck hit Wyatt in the helmet via a top edge with a ball nudging 120kph. She then had her caught off the glove down the leg side two balls later. Two overs later Vlaeminck was unfortunate not to have Nat Sciver lbw but was too quick for Amy Jones, rattling her leg stump to leave England 2 for 39 at the end of the powerplay.

Spin to win

Lanning held her spinners back until the ninth over with Sciver and Heather Knight looking very comfortable against Australia's other medium pacers. Sciver tried to target Molineux straight away and holed out to deep midwicket. It started a rot with Molineux and Jonassen matching what Ecclestone and Glenn did earlier. The two left-arm orthodox bowlers targeted the stumps and mixed their lengths and lines to put England in a spin. Heather Knight was stumped running past one from Molineux after her and Fran Wilson scored just 7 runs in 10 balls following Sciver's dismissal. Wilson was also stumped off Jonassen while Tammy Beaumont was bowled trying to reverse sweep Molineux as the run-rate ground to a halt. It left England 6 for 70 needing 63 runs from 42 balls. They were unable to get near Australia's target with the tail only scoring five boundaries in the last seven overs to miss out on the final.

Chloe Tryon's blitz keeps South Africa's series alive

Published in Cricket
Saturday, 08 February 2020 22:07

South Africa Women 154 for 5 (van Niekerk 42, Tryon 34*, Huddleston 2-33, Devine 2-38) beat New Zealand Women 153 for 5 (Devine 77, Khakha 2-14, Luus 2-27) by five wickets

An unbeaten 16-ball 34 from Chloe Tryon powered South Africa to victory with one ball remaining in the third T20I in Wellington, keeping the series alive with two matches left to play. South Africa needed 52 off 33 balls when Tryon came to the crease, and she clattered two fours and three sixes - including one off Sophie Devine when the equation had come down to eight off four balls - in an innings that prevented New Zealand from taking an unassailable 3-0 lead in the series.

That last over ended a bittersweet match for Devine, who scored a 57-ball 77 and took the wickets of both South Africa openers within the powerplay. From there, South Africa stayed in the game courtesy useful contributions from Marizanne Kapp (20 off 15), Dane van Niekerk (42 off 40) and Mignon du Preez (23 off 22), but tight bowling from the Kerr sisters, medium-pacer Jessica (3-0-14-0) and legspinner Amelia (4-0-17-1), had kept them on a tight leash before Tryon made the decisive intervention.

Devine set the perfect platform for New Zealand, hitting seven fours and four sixes and scoring at a rate well above most of her team-mates'. When Sune Luus dismissed her, New Zealand were 130 for 4 with 19 balls left in their innings. Only 23 runs came off those 19 balls, however, with Kapp, Ayabonga Khaka and Shabnim Ismail tying the middle order down at the death.

Duke rally stuns North Carolina at buzzer in OT

Published in Breaking News
Saturday, 08 February 2020 18:27

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Tre Jones got Duke to overtime, and Wendell Moore Jr. finished off North Carolina.

They did it with a pair of plays sure to live on in replays and the lore of the fierce rivalry, too.

Jones hit a jumper at the horn to force the extra period, then Moore scored on a putback of Jones' air-balled jumper as time expired in OT to help the No. 7 Blue Devils top the Tar Heels 98-96 in a wild renewal of the longtime series Saturday night.

"There's really nothing to put into words," Jones said with a laugh. "I'm still trying to wrap my head around what happened."

So was everyone else in the Smith Center.

"What happened in the game, it's just unreal," UNC freshman Cole Anthony said.

Duke (20-3, 10-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) rallied from 13 down in the final 4½ minutes of regulation on Jones' contested shot after he ran down a long rebound on his own intentionally missed free throw. Then the Blue Devils had to rally from five down in the final 20.9 seconds after the Tar Heels had seemingly steadied themselves after looking staggered following Jones' jumper.

Jones hit a free throw to tie it with 6.6 seconds left in OT only to miss the second, but Moore tapped the rebound beyond the 3-point arc to be recovered by teammate Jordan Goldwire. Jones got the ball and drove to launch an off-balance shot off one foot and missed everything, but Moore flew in behind Christian Keeling to snatch the ball near the left side of the rim and put it right back in.

Two clutch baskets, right at the horn. It was reminiscent of Austin Rivers' buzzer-beating 3-pointer to win here in 2012, right down to Duke players spilling onto the court from the bench to mob Moore and celebrate in front of a stunned UNC crowd.

"If you don't care who won the game, you had to enjoy that as a big-time college basketball game," UNC coach Roy Williams said. "I care who won the game, so I did not enjoy the final outcome."

Jones had 28 points for Duke, which trailed most of the night and led for only 1:47 of game action. The Blue Devils scored nine straight points in the final 50 seconds of regulation, and then the first six points of overtime.

"We've put so much time and effort in and we all have the same mentality at that point," Jones said, "that we weren't losing, that we were going to win this game."

Anthony had 24 points and 11 rebounds for the Tar Heels (10-13, 3-9), who were unexpectedly in control of this one much of the way -- only to be undone by missed free throws and an inability to come up with one or two more clutch plays to close it out.

BIG PICTURE

Duke: Jones offered a reminder of how good he can be in big moments. After big man Vernon Carey Jr. fouled out, the Blue Devils had to go small with Jones running the point with confident and aggressive precision. "He was at another level tonight," Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski said, adding: "He was a stud tonight, man."

UNC: For once, the Tar Heels' season-long struggles seemed in the past, and they had found probably their best mix of Anthony's ball-dominant style with getting the ball consistently in the post even while playing without No. 3 scorer Brandon Robinson due to an ankle injury. And yet, the Tar Heels -- just as in their first-ever home loss to Clemson last month -- faltered at the most critical moments. Most glaringly, they made just 21 of 38 free throws, including 5 of 12 to end regulation.

STAYING CLOSE

This one was fittingly close considering the history of the rivalry.

The teams were marking the 100th anniversary of the first basketball game between the teams with retro-inspired jerseys that had each team sporting its shade of blue. And in an odd stat, the teams had split the past 100 games evenly, even matching one another with 7,746 points in those meetings.

And now, Duke's ahead by a bucket.

DISPUTED PLAY

A disputed no-call in the final seconds of overtime gave Duke the ball and its chance to win. After a driving basket by Moore got the Blue Devils within one with 12 seconds left, the Tar Heels tried to inbound the ball to Andrew Platek -- only to see Moore make contact with Platek while knocking the ball away near the sideline. Officials didn't call a foul and ruled the ball touched Platek last, and then upheld the call after a replay review with 10.7 seconds left.

TIP-INS

Moore had 17 points and 10 rebounds for Duke. ... Carey had 18 points in a dominating first half but didn't score after halftime. ... The Blue Devils scored 25 points off 18 turnovers. ... The Tar Heels shot 52% and had five players in double figures, including Garrison Brooks (18) and graduate transfer Christian Keeling (13). ... Duke earned its first win in Chapel Hill since 2016.

UP NEXT

Duke: The Blue Devils host No. 8 Florida State on Monday night.

UNC: The Tar Heels visit Wake Forest on Tuesday night.

Manager: Khabib uninterested in facing McGregor

Published in Breaking News
Saturday, 08 February 2020 20:01

HOUSTON -- A blockbuster rematch between Conor McGregor and Khabib Nurmagomedov does not appear imminent.

Nurmagomedov's manager, Ali Abdelaziz, told ESPN on Saturday that Nurmagomedov remains uninterested in fighting McGregor again. Nurmagomedov finished McGregor via fourth-round submission at UFC 229 on Oct. 6, 2018.

McGregor's 40-second TKO win over Donald Cerrone last month at UFC 246 has not affected Nurmagomedov's mindset, Abdelaziz said. Nurmagomedov, the UFC lightweight champion, has said previously that McGregor would have to win many more fights before getting a shot at the title. Abdelaziz said Saturday that he doesn't think a second fight will ever happen unless it's outside the Octagon.

"The only chance this fight could happen is in the street," Abdelaziz said Saturday at UFC 247 at Toyota Center. "[McGregor would] have to do something spectacular. He's s---, you understand? ... Conor McGregor is one of the biggest stars, because he's one of the biggest scumbags."

There are still plenty of hard feelings from Nurmagomedov's camp about the lead-up to and conclusion of UFC 229. McGregor, the former UFC lightweight and featherweight champ, was arrested for throwing a dolly through a bus window, targeting Nurmagomedov in April 2018. That incident was in retaliation for Nurmagomedov slapping McGregor's teammate, Artem Lobov.

In the promotion for UFC 229, McGregor brought up topics like Nurmagomedov's Islamic faith, Dagestan culture and his family. He also talked about Abdelaziz's family. After the first fight, there was a brawl involving McGregor, Nurmagomedov and both of their teams. Even since that fight more than a year ago, McGregor has mocked Nurmagomedov's wife on social media.

"Let's be real," Abdelaziz said. "We don't like this guy. We're never gonna like him. Probably every time we see him, there's gonna be problems. He said things about family, things about religion, things about race. He crossed the line. ... You can't cross the line with [Khabib]."

Nurmagomedov will defend his title against Tony Ferguson at UFC 249 on April 18 in Brooklyn. If he wins, the UFC is hoping to put together a rematch between Nurmagomedov and McGregor, according to UFC president Dana White. However, Abdelaziz said Nurmagomedov believes McGregor should fight someone else, a lightweight contender like Justin Gaethje (also an Abdelaziz client).

"Conor needs to earn things," Abdelaziz said. "He was a champion. He needs to earn things. Khabib really, really wants to make him earn it. It doesn't matter, because what he says. We have a really, really tough fight. Everybody forgets about Tony, dismissing him. Khabib has been training for three months straight and he has two more months."

As lucrative as Nurmagomedov vs. McGregor 2 would be -- White has predicted it would be the biggest fight in UFC history -- Abdelaziz said there is no financial motivation involved for Nurmagomedov.

"Listen, there's a lot of money for Khabib if Khabib fights Conor," Abdelaziz said. "... But everything is not about money. Especially with Khabib."

Shevchenko easily defends UFC flyweight title

Published in Breaking News
Saturday, 08 February 2020 21:25

HOUSTON -- Mixed martial arts is running out of words to describe Valentina Shevchenko's dominance. And she is on only her third UFC title defense.

Shevchenko (19-3) completely obliterated No. 1 contender Katlyn Chookagian (13-3) in the co-main event of UFC 247 on Saturday, as she finished the fight via TKO at 1:03 of the third round. Referee Jacob Montalvo stopped the bout after Shevchenko took Chookagian down in the center of the Octagon and unloaded unanswered ground and pound.

Shevchenko's victory at the Toyota Center is her fifth in a row and the third defense of her 125-pound title. She has been more than a 10-1 betting favorite in each of her defenses, against Jessica Eye, Liz Carmouche and Chookagian.

"I expected a ground [knockout], yes," Shevchenko said. "Every time, I prepare for a war at the top, but of course, if I train hard, it makes for an easier fight."

Shevchenko, of Kyrgyzstan, has lost in the UFC only twice, and both losses came against current bantamweight and featherweight champion Amanda Nunes. Shevchenko believes she beat Nunes in their rematch in 2017 and has expressed interest in facing Nunes again but is in no rush to do so.

"I feel there is a lot of great girls in the 125-pound division," Shevchenko said. "I feel I still have a lot of them, but I am open to anything. I am open to any fight."

Saturday's championship bout felt more like a showcase than a competition. Shevchenko out-landed Chookagian, who fights out of New Jersey, in total strikes 82 to 68. Even though Chookagian's numbers were respectable, it was hard to see where any of her strikes had any effect.

Shevchenko, on the other hand, opened a cut near Chookagian's left eye with an elbow on the ground in the opening round. She repeatedly tagged Chookagian's lower leg with combinations, and landed a beautiful spinning wheel kick to Chookagian's face in the second round.

ESPN.com currently ranks Shevchenko the No. 2 pound-for-pound fighter in the world. Chookagian fell to 6-3 in the UFC.

Still the champ: Jones tested, but prevails on cards

Published in Breaking News
Saturday, 08 February 2020 22:19

Jon Jones' title defense Saturday night didn't come easy, as his light heavyweight fight against challenger Dominick Reyes went the distance in the UFC 247 main event.

He ultimately prevailed on the cards 48-47, 48-47, 49-46 in a unanimous decision win.

"It was very close," Jones said in his post-fight interview.

Jones is now undefeated in his past 18 fights, while Reyes dropped to 12-1-0.

Clippers officially waive IT to free up roster spot

Published in Basketball
Saturday, 08 February 2020 15:43

The LA Clippers have officially waived guard Isaiah Thomas, Clippers president of basketball operations Lawrence Frank said Saturday.

Thomas, 31, was acquired Thursday as part of a three-team trade with the Washington Wizards and New York Knicks. The move frees up a second roster spot for LA as it eyes a playoff run.

League sources told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski after the trade that the Clippers planned to waive Thomas.

The Clippers have Patrick Beverley, Lou Williams and Landry Shamet who can play the same role the veteran Thomas, 30, would fill.

Thursday's trade saw Marcus Morris and Thomas head to the Clippers, with Jerome Robinson joining the Wizards. In exchange, the Knicks received Moe Harkless and a 2020 first-round draft pick.

Thomas is averaging 12.2 points this season. For his career, he is averaging 18.1 points and 5.0 assists in 28.9 minutes across 525 games.

Newly acquired Wiggins scores 24 in GS debut

Published in Basketball
Saturday, 08 February 2020 20:37

SAN FRANCISCO -- Andrew Wiggins scored 24 points and had five steals in his debut for the Golden State Warriors during a 125-120 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers on Saturday night.

The veteran swingman went 8-for-12 from the field in 31 minutes. The 24-year-old showed some of the offensive prowess the Warriors are hoping to see more of, especially once Stephen Curry (broken left hand) and Klay Thompson (left ACL rehab) return to the floor. His new teammates and coaches liked what they saw from him.

"It's just great to have a player who we could put on LeBron and at least matchup physically," Warriors coach Steve Kerr said. "It's the hardest position to guard these days in the NBA. So to have a guy who is 6-8 and athletic and knows the league well, understands how to play, it's great."

Wiggins was acquired on Thursday in a package that included a future first-round pick and second-round pick and sent guards D'Angelo Russell, Jacob Evans and big man Omari Spellman to the Timberwolves. The Warriors are hopeful their solid culture can help maximize Wiggins' considerable potential. Wiggins expressed excitement to be part of a winning culture after almost six seasons in Minnesota.

"We lost a lot in Minnesota," he said. "So coming here, being part of a winning culture, it's different. Losing's never fun. Being here, you can tell by everyone's attitude, everyone's approach, everything that's everywhere, they're winners. That's something I've wanted to be my whole career."

While Wiggins is looking forward to more potential playoff games with his new team in the future, the reality is with the injury-riddled Warriors playing without Draymond Green, Wiggins had the second most playoff experience on the roster behind only Kevon Looney. Before the game, Kerr said his directions for Wiggins prior to the game were clear.

"I never said anything about how many shots, I just said sprint the floor both ways," Kerr said. "That is the only thing we are asking, especially here in the first week without him having much knowledge of the playbook. We just stuck to a couple of basic actions and I just told him, 'No matter what happens, we need you to sprint the floor both ways.' And when we are whole again, we got a couple of guys who really throw the ball ahead in transition in Draymond and Steph. Andrew can get out with such speed and that will be a great weapon going forward."

To Kerr's point, Wiggins entered Saturday's game averaging 26.1 points a game in games against LeBron James. That's the third highest average amongst players who have played at least 10 games against James, according to Elias Sports Bureau. The only two players who have averaged more in games against James are Kevin Durant, who is averaging 28.5 a games in 21 contests and Damian Lillard who is averaging 28.1 points in 15 contests.

Wiggins knows there are a lot of critics of his game, especially after failing to live up to his expectations after signing a max extension a couple years ago, but he says he isn't focused on the doubt surrounding his game.

"I feel like everyone's entitled to their own opinion," Wiggins said. It is what it is. I feel like when you're losing there's going to be a little dark shadow over you, but I'm here now. This is a winning culture, a winning team, so hopefully people can take a different view and just watch us ball."

Wiggins received a warm ovation from the sold-out Chase Center crowd during pregame introductions after being announced for the first time. He was also greeted by a familiar face when his former coach with the Timberwolves, Tom Thibodeau, stopped him and gave him a hug prior to pregame warm-ups.

"Go get 'em," Thibodeau told him.

Kerr said he got a positive recommendation from Thibodeau regarding his former player.

"He is just a very humble person," Kerr said of Wiggins. "He is excited to be here. I think he is excited to play with the guys he is going to play with - sometimes a change of scenery is good for a player in his career and I think the timing is right. He is easy to coach. He seems very low maintenance. I had the chance to meet with Tom Thibodeau, who is here right now, he had already planned a trip in to watch us practice the next few days. And I talked to Thibs pregame and he said he loved Andrew, loved coaching him and I can see why. Low maintenance and really good guy, good teammate and everybody enjoyed playing with him."

Morton regrets not stopping Astros' sign stealing

Published in Baseball
Saturday, 08 February 2020 18:31

Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Charlie Morton says he regrets not doing more to stop his teammates from illegally stealing signs when he played for the Astros in 2017.

In an interview with the Tampa Bay Times at Rays Fan Fest on Saturday, Morton said he was "aware of the banging" Astros players were using to warn hitters of what kind of pitch was coming during the 2017 season.

"Personally, I regret not doing more to stop it," Morton said. "I don't know what that would have entailed. I think the actions would have been somewhat extreme to stop it. That's a hypothetical."

However, he admitted that the scandal has damaged the game of baseball and took responsibility for his role in it.

"Because what's wrong is wrong," Morton told the Tampa Bay Times. "And I'll never be absolved of that."

Morton pitched for the Astros in 2017 and 2018, going 29-10 with a 3.36 ERA in the two seasons. He posted a 1.74 ERA across 10⅓ innings against the Dodgers in the 2017 World Series that Houston went on to win.

Morton told the Times that the perception of that championship was "negatively affected, at minimum."

"There are moments during the World Series that will always be special to me, that won't be 'tainted.' But certainly that's justified, that's a justified perception to have, and what people have expressed."

Rays trade Pagan to Padres for Margot, prospect

Published in Baseball
Saturday, 08 February 2020 19:24

The Tampa Bay Rays traded reliever Emilio Pagan to the San Diego Padres for center fielder Manuel Margot and catcher/outfielder prospect Logan Driscoll, the teams announced Saturday.

The Rays boasted one of the deepest bullpens in baseball, and now the same can be said of the Padres, who add Pagan to a group that includes Kirby Yates, Drew Pomeranz, Craig Stammen, Matt Strahm and Andres Munoz.

Pagan, 28, posted a 2.31 ERA across 70 innings for the Rays last season. He led the team's vaunted bullpen in saves (20) and strikeouts (96) and posted career highs in WHIP (0.81) and opponent average (.179).

The Padres lost some outfielder depth in the deal with Margot, who was part of trade talks all winter, including ones for Mookie Betts, according to ESPN's Jeff Passan. The 24-year-old slashed .234/.304/.387 and hit 12 home runs in 441 plate appearances last year. He ranked second among National League center fielders in fielding percentage (.992).

Driscoll, 22, was a second-round pick out of George Mason in 2019.
