Blackhawks' Seabrook undergoes hip surgery

Published in Hockey
Thursday, 06 February 2020 15:07

CHICAGO -- Blackhawks defenseman Brent Seabrook is expected to be ready for the start of next season after he had right hip surgery Thursday.

Seabrook, 34, also had right shoulder surgery in December and left hip surgery last month. Team physician Michael Terry said Seabrook will be ready to return in five to six months.

Seabrook, who is under contract through the 2023-24 season at an average annual value of $6.8 million, was placed on long-term injured reserve in December.

The 6-foot-3 Seabrook has 103 goals and 361 assists in 1,114 games since his NHL debut in 2005, plus 20 goals and 39 assists in 123 playoff appearances. He helped the Blackhawks win the Stanley Cup in 2010, 2013 and 2015.

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – Phil Mickelson was glowing after closing with three straight birdies Thursday to get in early contention to win the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am for a record sixth time.

The spark in his eyes was more about all those “bombs” he continued to hit in a 4-under-par 68 at Spyglass Hill, which left him four shots off the lead.

“I drove it like a stallion,” Mickelson said. “Hit almost every fairway.

“And when you’re doing that you can get aggressive and get after it.”

Actually, Mickelson hit 10 of 14 fairways, but what mattered is how much control he felt off the tee. He hit 15 greens and believed he should have posted an even lower number. He wasn’t satisfied with his iron play or his putting.

“The fact that I didn't take advantage of those opportunities was disappointing, but I feel like I'll be able to continue driving it like that, and if I do, I'll get my iron play fixed and roll in some more birdies,” he said.

Those three closing birdies sent him rocketing up the leaderboard.

“It was a good finish,” he said. “I let a lot of shots slide throughout the middle of the round. My speed was a little bit off. I was very tentative with my pace, because the greens were pretty quick, and I just wasn't quite aggressive enough on the greens. I let a lot of opportunities slide.

“But I shot a 4-under par round and it's not going to hurt me. If I go out tomorrow and play well at Monterey Peninsula, I can get a hot round going and move right up the leaderboard, so that finish was very helpful.”

Barca out of Copa on last-gasp Bilbao strike

Published in Soccer
Thursday, 06 February 2020 14:56

Barcelona were sent crashing out of the Copa del Rey quarterfinals as they were beaten 1-0 at Athletic Bilbao on Thursday after a stoppage time header from Inaki Williams.

Striker Williams glanced a cross into the bottom corner to spark jubilant scenes inside a rocking San Mames stadium, just moments after he had squandered a gilt-edged chance.

Barca captain Lionel Messi spurned a glorious late opportunity for the visitors when he could only shoot at the legs of Athletic keeper Unai Simon while his fellow striker Antoine Griezmann also came close in the second half.

The Catalans have won the Cup a record 30 times but join Real Madrid in being knocked out after Zinedine Zidane's side were beaten 4-3 at home to Real Sociedad earlier on Thursday.

Record 30-times winners Barcelona were sent crashing out of the Copa del Rey in a 1-0 defeat at Athletic Bilbao on Thursday after a stoppage-time header from Inaki Williams.

Spanish striker Williams glanced a cross into the bottom corner to spark jubilant scenes at a rocking San Mames stadium and recalled Aritz Aduriz's added-time goal in Athletic's 1-0 win at home to Barca on the first day of the Liga season.

They join Real Sociedad, Granada and second-tier Mirandes in Friday's semi-final draw, which will not include Real Madrid, Barca and Atletico Madrid for the first time in 17 years.

Coach Quique Setien said he was hurt by the elimination but was pleased with his side's performance.

"Today everything went well apart from the result," he said. "We took a step forward in our play and I'm pleased with many things we did, I'm not only looking at the result."

Barca captain Lionel Messi spurned a glorious late opportunity for the visitors when he could only shoot at the legs of Athletic keeper Unai Simon while his fellow striker Antoine Griezmann also came close in the second half.

The game looked to be heading into extra time when Williams missed a gilt-edged chance inside the area but he made amends by getting the slightest of touches on a cross from Ibai Gomez in the third minute of added time.

"I'm lost for words, you should never lose faith," Williams told reporters. "The fans deserved this moment after the way they supported us and I now hope we can go on and fulfil the dream that we all have by going on to win it."

The victory must have also felt like redemption for Athletic, who were knocked out of the Cup by Barca in 2017 and 2016 and lost to them in the final in 2009, 2012 and 2015.

The Catalans have appeared in the last six finals but they join Real Madrid in being knocked out after Zinedine Zidane's side were beaten 4-3 at home to Real Sociedad earlier on Thursday.

Real Sociedad ended Real Madrid's 21-game unbeaten run by winning 4-3 at the Bernabeu, while Barcelona were sent crashing out thanks to hosts Athletic Bilbao on a stoppage time header.

According to ESPN Stats & Information, the last time the two Spanish traditional powers were bounced from the competition on the same day was May 29th, 1955, when Real Madrid lost to Sevilla and Barcelona were eliminated by Athletic Club in the semifinals.

With Real and Barcelona out of this year's competition, Basque clubs Real Sociedad and Athletic Bilbao will join fellow La Liga counterparts Granada and second division side Mirandes in the final four.

The last Copa del Rey semifinals without Real Madrid and Barcelona occurred in 2009-10.

Sid Lowe: 75% chance Messi stays at Barcelona

Sid Lowe explains why Lionel Messi will likely remain at Barcelona despite recent turmoil within the club.

Barcelona have lifted the Copa a record 30 times, while Real Madrid have won it 19 times. Athletic Bilbao have 23 titles but have not won since the 1983-84 season.

Barcelona coach Quique Setien said he was hurt by the elimination but was pleased with his side's performance.

"Today everything went well apart from the result," he said. "We took a step forward in our play and I'm pleased with many things we did, I'm not only looking at the result."

On Real Madrid's loss, manager Zinedine Zidane said: "It's a bad feeling because we lost at home. We started badly. We tried until the end and the second half was much better ... the opponent played well. We were bad in the first half with our press, then we made defensive mistakes."

Feb. 24 chosen for Kobe (24), Gianna (2) service

A memorial service celebrating the life of Lakers legend Kobe Bryant and his daughter Gianna will be held the morning of Feb. 24 at Staples Center in Los Angeles.

There is significance in the date, which reflects the basketball jersey numbers worn by Kobe (No. 24) and Gianna (No. 2). Gianna Bryant's jersey was retired by Harbor Day School in Corona Del Mar, California, on Thursday.

Kobe Bryant, 13-year-old Gianna and seven others died in a helicopter crash in Calabasas, California, on Jan. 26. They were headed to Mamba Sports Academy in Thousand Oaks for Gianna's team's game.

The date for the memorial was finalized with planning and coordination from the City of Los Angeles, the Los Angeles Police Department and the LA Clippers, who have a game at Staples that evening against the Memphis Grizzlies.

Staples Center most recently has staged memorials celebrating the lives of entertainers Nipsey Hussle and Michael Jackson.

Ex-pitcher Young replacing Torre as MLB disciplinarian

Published in Baseball
Thursday, 06 February 2020 15:46

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Major League Baseball will have a new disciplinarian.

Hall of Famer Joe Torre, who has headed baseball operations at the commissioner's office since 2011, is shifting to a role as special assistant to the commissioner.

Former pitcher Chris Young will replace Torre as the person who decides suspensions and fines for on-field matters, such as intentionally hitting batters, charging the mound and fights.

Torre, who turns 80 in July, is expected to travel less during the season. A nine-time All-Star from 1960-77, Torre managed for 29 seasons through 2010 and won four World Series titles with the New York Yankees.

Torre was hired as MLB's executive vice president for baseball operations in February 2011 and became chief baseball officer during a reorganization in December 2014 as Rob Manfred prepared to succeed Bud Selig as commissioner.

Young pitched in the major leagues for 13 years and retired after the 2017 season. He joined MLB in May 2018 as vice president of on-field operations, initiatives and strategy, and he was promoted Thursday to senior vice president. The 40-year-old will oversee on-field operations and umpiring, and he will report to deputy commissioner Dan Halem.

Appeals of on-field discipline decisions will continue to be heard by John McHale Jr., a special assistant to Manfred.

In another staff move, Morgan Sword was promoted to executive vice president of baseball economics and operations from senior vice president of league economics and strategy.

Former players Gregor Blanco and Nick Hundley were hired as senior directors of baseball operations.

Ireland will be biggest test of my career - Wales boss Pivac

Published in Rugby
Thursday, 06 February 2020 14:00

Wales coach Wayne Pivac says the Six Nations trip to Ireland will prove the biggest test he has faced.

He is preparing for his first Wales Test away from Cardiff following a 42-0 Six Nations win over Italy and an uncapped victory against Barbarians in November 2019.

Wales have not defeated Ireland in the Six Nations in Dublin since 2012.

When asked whether this was the biggest test of his coaching career, Pivac replied: "Yes definitely."

The former Fiji and Scarlets boss added: "It will be a massive step up in what we've had so far.

"We've been very fortunate in we've had that Barbarians game which allowed us to iron a few things out.

"We then went into a competition match against Italy and now we go up against a much sterner challenge in their backyard.

"It's built nicely and this will be a real test to see where we are at and how much work we've got to do to be able to play the game under pressure.

"It's been an enjoyable week and you can tell it's a bigger game than last week just from the reaction of the players.

"That's without us poking and prodding them. I expect it to be an enjoyable occasion, but with a lot of pressure."

Weather warning

Wales are expected to have to cope with some challenging weather conditions with Storm Ciara scheduled to hit Ireland this weekend.

"Let's hope the forecast is slightly wrong and it comes through early or later [than Saturday afternoon]," said Pivac.

"Both sides will have to play in it. If the conditions dictate, then we have to win games through an arm wrestle as well and this team has been very good at doing that in the past.

"We will be playing with a positive attitude whether that's moving the ball through the hands or kicking the ball and trying to find space that way."

Ireland won their first game under new head coach Andy Farrell with a 19-12 victory over Scotland last weekend.

"They are very strong. and we've got to bring a physical edge to the game," said Pivac.

"If you don't bring that physicality you are going to come off second best.

"They are good at grinding teams down and getting go-forward and penalties tend to come.

"They've also got a good set-piece which puts pressure on."

Wales struggled in the scrum against Italy by conceding penalties, but Pivac disagreed with some interpretations of English referee Luke Pearce and Frenchman Romain Poite is in charge in Dublin.

"We've looked at the scrum and reviewed it," said Pivac.

"We probably didn't agree with all the decisions there. We see one thing, the referee sees another at times.

"That's just part and parcel of the game, but we've worked very hard on the scrum this week."

Verbal volleys

Pivac insists the build-up to the match will not be affected in the same manner as the Scotland and England game with some of the verbal volleys including words such as "hate" and "war".

"Hate is a pretty strong word and I don't think there's any need for that," said Pivac.

"We talk about getting in the trenches and all teams do. You are five metres out from their goal line and five metres out from your own where you've got to dig deep.

"It's a contact sport, it's a gladiatorial sport and you've got to have the mindset right."

After their Dublin date, Wales host France on 22 February before travelling to face England on 7 March.

"When you look at the way the competition is structured these next three weeks if we don't get them right then it's game over," said Pivac.

"It is massive, but there's also a good vibe in the team.

"The boys are more experienced than I am and know exactly what's required if they want to repeat [the Grand Slam of] last year.

"It's nothing, but a win this weekend. They know if they win this, they get a weekend off and then a home game to hopefully get excited about the last two games.

"It's an important one and the players know what's at stake."

NiTEO Products Backs Kalitta Motorsports

Published in Racing
Thursday, 06 February 2020 13:31

YSILANTI, Mich. – NiTEO Products has agreed to a multi-year sponsorship program with Kalitta Motorsports and will supply multiple brands and products beginning at the 60th annual NHRA Winternationals this weekend.

More than 50 products highlighted by OZIUM air sanitizer and Pyroil automotive chemicals will be used daily by Kalitta mechanics and crew chiefs on all three race teams.

“The return of Pyroil to the drag racing scene is far overdue. It has been a storied brand in NHRA for many years,” said Cameron Evans, CEO of NiTEO Products. “The Kalitta team is a trusted technical partner, so you’ll see us further develop NiTEO brands and products around their pit area, transporters and at their Michigan headquarters. From cleaning the cars and transporters to assisting in a service between rounds, the exact same products the team uses are what our customers buy in retail and installer markets. We are proud of that.”

NiTEO brands in the Kalitta Motorsports program include OZIUM air sanitizers, Pyroil parts cleaner, Car Brite and Hi-Tech detail products, Motor Medic engine degreaser, as well as Cyclo thread locker, anti-seize, silicone and gasket products. Throughout the season the team will be hosting NiTEO brand representatives at various NHRA national events. Additionally, they will be participating in the pit-side hospitality program and business-to-business program managed by the Kalitta Motorsports marketing team.

“This is an exciting opportunity for Kalitta Motorsports to partner with a multi-brand marketer,” said Chad Head, General Manager of Kalitta Motorsports. “There are a ton of products we use every day that are represented by NiTEO. We were blown away with how the aerosol parts cleaner did the job, it evaporated and didn’t leave a big smell behind. Plus, we are using OZIUM in the trailers to take care of daily issues like lingering nitro smell. Their stuff works.”

The featured brand on the race cars will be OZIUM, a retail brand of air sanitizers and odor eliminators.

JD Motorsports Adds Veteran David Starr

GAFFNEY, S.C. – JD Motorsports with Gary Keller has added veteran driver David Starr to the team for the full NASCAR Xfinity Series season.

Starr makes the move to JD Motorsports from Jimmy Means Racing, where he finished 22nd in the drivers’ standings last year.

Starr will pilot the newly renumbered No. 6 Chevrolet for the first time in the team’s history.

“First of all, I am extremely excited to have the opportunity to drive for JD Motorsports with Gary Keller,” said Starr. “In the last two or three years, I have noticed their vast improvements as a race team on the competition side of things, and now that I will be joining forces with them, I hope to help a strong team become even stronger. I want to help grow their program and bring them long run success, and we have all the right pieces together to make it happen. We have a lot of great partners that will be featured on our No. 6 Chevrolet throughout the year, and I look forward to representing them to the best of my abilities.”

Flames captain Giordano won't need surgery

Published in Hockey
Thursday, 06 February 2020 13:30

The Calgary Flames are feeling pretty lucky after an MRI on the hamstring of defenseman Mark Giordano showed he does not need surgery.

Giordano, the Flames' captain and reigning Norris Trophy winner, will be monitored on a week-to-week basis. That means that Giordano could still help the Flames' playoff push. Calgary is currently clinging to the second wild card in the West.

Giordano was hurt in Tuesday's 3-1 loss to the San Jose Sharks. He left the game in the second period, after attempting a one-time shot that stretched his legs awkwardly as he fell to the ice.

"We dodged that bullet," general manager Brad Treliving said, according to the team's website. "We'll get through this next week, take the first week off, and then monitor it. Hopefully he's back sooner rather than later, but it's certainly good news from where we were two nights ago, thinking this was something that could keep him out the rest of the year. ... Probably the best thing I can give you is probably a better sense a week from now, once we know a little bit better in terms of identifying a return date."

Giordano said that he will not rush back, returning only when he's healthy enough to contribute.

"This one, there's no timeline," he said. "We're going to go day-to-day, week-to-week, but I think it's very encouraging that my season is not lost and I can get back after the rehab process."

Giordano, 36, is in his 13th season in the NHL. He has five goals and 27 points for the Flames, but his true worth is on Calgary's back line, where he leads the team with an average of 23 minutes, 57 seconds on ice per game. He has 143 shots on net, most of them slap shots from the point.

Giordano's career season was 2018-19, when he became the first Flames player in franchise history to win the Norris as the league's best defenseman. He was also just the fourth player 35 or older to win the award, after finishing second among NHL players at his position with 74 points.
