Sources: Kobe, daughter die in helicopter crash

Published in Basketball
Sunday, 26 January 2020 11:58

NBA legend Kobe Bryant and his daughter were among five people killed in a helicopter crash in Calabasas, California, on Sunday, a source confirmed to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski. Bryant was 41.

Bryant was on his way to a travel basketball game with his 13-year-old daughter Gianna Bryant when the helicopter crashed, sources told Wojnarowski. Those aboard the helicopter also included another player and parent. According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, there were no survivors of the crash. An investigation is ongoing.

The crash comes one day after Bryant was passed by Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James for third place on the NBA's all-time scoring list. As late as 10:39 p.m. ET on Saturday, Bryant was active on social media, congratulating James on Twitter during the Lakers' 108-91 loss to the Philadelphia 76ers.

James inscribed his sneakers with "Mamba 4 Life" and "8/24 KB" in gold marker before the game, showing respect for Bryant, an 18-time All-Star with the Lakers who is eligible for the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2020. All week, in the lead-up to the milestone, he was quick to laud Bryant.

"It's another guy that I looked up to when I was in grade school and high school," James said. "Seeing him come straight out of high school, he is someone that I used as inspiration. It was like, wow. Seeing a kid, 17 years old, come into the NBA and trying to make an impact on a franchise, I used it as motivation. He helped me before he even knew of me because of what he was able to do. So, just to be able to, at this point of my career, to share the same jersey that he wore, be with this historical franchise and just represent the purple and gold, it's very humbling and it's dope.

"Kobe's a legend, that's for damn sure."

A 6-foot-6 small forward with the ability to swing up front and play point or shooting guard, Bryant entered the NBA straight out of high school. In 1996, he became the youngest player in NBA history.

He won five NBA titles in his time with the Lakers, as well as two Olympic gold medals playing for the United States. Now fourth on the NBA's all-time scoring list with 33,643 points, Bryant won two NBA Finals MVP awards and one NBA regular-season MVP nod in 2008.

This week marked the 14-year anniversary of his 81-point game against the Toronto Raptors, still the second most points ever scored in an NBA game behind Wilt Chamberlain's 100.

Bryant passed his childhood idol, Michael Jordan, on the all-time scoring list in 2014. Jordan embraced Bryant, fueling his passion for the game. The two had a memorable matchup in Bryant's first All-Star Game selection in New York's Madison Square Garden, and later, when Jordan played for the Washington Wizards, Bryant scored 42 points in a half (en route to 55 for the game) against him.

"He knows how much I've learned from him," Bryant said of Jordan in 2014, "from the other legends and him in particular."

A native of Philadelphia, Bryant was selected No. 13 overall in 1996 by the Charlotte Hornets before being traded to the Lakers. He wore both No. 8 and 24 with the Lakers, both of which were retired by the franchise. He was credited with changing how NBA front offices viewed wing talent coming out of high school into the draft.

"I'm happy just to be in any conversation with Kobe Bean Bryant. One of the all-time greatest basketball players to ever play, one of the all-time greatest Lakers," James said Saturday night. "The man got two jerseys hanging up in Staples Center. It's just crazy."

Bryant is the only player in NBA history to have multiple jerseys retired by a single franchise.

On Nov. 29, 2015, Bryant announced that he intended to retire at the end of the season, which launched a farewell tour for the ages around the NBA. He played in 66 games that season for Los Angeles, averaging 17.6 points, 3.7 rebounds and 2.8 assists.

In his final game, on April 13, 2016, he scored 60 points, leading the Lakers past the Utah Jazz 101-96.

While Bryant was an unqualified star on the court, he did have controversy off it. He was accused of sexual assault in Colorado in 2003. The criminal case was dropped the next year, but Bryant still issued an apology. He said that he considered the encounter to be consensual but recognized that the woman "did not and does not view this incident the same way I did."

Bryant was married to Vanessa Laine Bryant in 2001, and they had four daughters together. His father, Joe "Jellybean" Bryant, is also a former NBA player.

A moment of silence was held at the first NBA game of the day Sunday -- the Nuggets' contest against the Rockets in Denver. In San Antonio, after the initial tip-off, the Raptors and Spurs each allowed 24 seconds to run off the clock on the first two possessions without playing.

Bryant transitioned into a post-basketball life that was far from retirement. He won an Academy Award in 2018, taking home the Oscar for the animated short, "Dear Basketball." Bryant also created a children's book series, inspired by his love for Harry Potter, which became a New York Times best seller.

Bryant's death was first reported by TMZ.

ESPN's Dave McMenamin contributed to this report.

Star of the show, as she has been throughout the whole Korea Republic campaign, was 15 year old Shin Yubin.

She partnered Choi Hyojoo to doubles success against Stéphanie Loeuillette and Yuan Jia Nan (8-11, 11-5, 11-6, 11-9), before in the fourth match of the fixture returning to the table to beat Marie Migot (11-9, 11-9, 11-7).

“This was a very big match. I was thinking about keeping my concentration. In both matches I was afraid but then I became more and more felt confident. Very happy with the victory. I want to get a medal at the Olympics.” Shin Yubin

Sandwiched in between Lee Eunhye accounted for Marie Migot (13-11, 4-11, 12-10, 11-4) to extend the Korea Republic lead, prior to Yuan Jian Nan, giving France hope. Employing high thrown serves that matched the highest of Hungarian international of yesteryear Csilla Batorfi, she overcame Choi Hyojoo (13-11, 11-8, 11-5).

Lost just one match

Success for Shin Yubin and more success for the teenager, in the whole of the five days of play in Gondomar, she lost just one match; most significantly remaining unbeaten in singles. The only defeat was against DPR Korea, the no.10 seeds, when in the decisive round in the main draw to determine Tokyo places, partnering Choi Hyojoo defeat was experienced at the hands of Kim Nam Hae and Cha Hyo Sim (7-11, 11-7, 11-9, 12-10).

A 3-1 reverse was the end result; most pertinently the one win for the Korea Republic was secured by Shin Yubin. In the third match of the contest she overcame Cha Hyo Sim (11-8, 9-11, 15-13, 11-1).

Maintained tradition

Hard earned, the long route but the tradition of being present in the women’s team event at the Olympic Games was maintained; furthermore with a very new selection. Choi Hyojoo and Shin Yubin played in every fixture, the one remaining place was shared between Lee Eunhye and Suh Hyowon, the latter the one player remaining from the Rio 2016 Olympic Games team.

In the Brazilian city Suh Hyowon had lined up alongside Jeon Jihee and Yang Haeun, a most worthy doubles pair having won no less than eight ITTF World Tour women’s doubles titles, notably succeeding just over three months ago in Germany. In Gondomar Choi Hyojoo and Shin Yubin proved equally adept; they were partners in every fixture; only against DPR Korea did they not give their team the perfect start.

New era

A new era dawns for Korea Republic; now the task is to follow their predecessors. In Rio de Janeiro it was quarter-final exit; in 2012 in London fourth place. In Tokyo can the current players match the team of 2008 in Beijing?

On that occasion Dang Yeseo, Kim Kyungah and Park Miyoung won bronze.

Pair of GK howlers see Roma and Lazio draw

Published in Soccer
Sunday, 26 January 2020 11:32

Lazio's 11-match winning run in Serie A was ended on Sunday following a 1-1 derby draw with AS Roma that was decided by two goalkeeping errors.

Thomas Strakosha misjudged a cross to allow Roma's Edin Dzeko to head in the opener after 26 minutes, but Lazio were level just eight minutes later when Pau Lopez failed to gather his own punch before Francesco Acerbi tapped in.

Roma came closest to clinching the win when Lorenzo Pellegrini curled a shot off the post, but Simone Inzaghi's side held on to stretch their unbeaten league run to 15 games.

Lazio are on 46 points, two behind second-placed Inter Milan and with a game in hand.

Roma have 39 points, one ahead of Atalanta.

Shrewsbury rally to force FA Cup replay with Liverpool

Published in Soccer
Sunday, 26 January 2020 11:04

Shrewsbury Town rallied for a shock 2-2 draw against Liverpool in the FA Cup fourth round on Sunday, forcing a replay of the match to determine which team will advance.

Jurgen Klopp fielded a heavily rotated starting XI for the runaway Premier League leaders, with Harvey Elliot, Divock Origi and new arrival Takumi Minamino starting up front.

Liverpool had a 2-0 lead early in the second half, but substitute Jason Cummings scored a pair of goals late on to bring the League One side level and force a replay.

It was one of Liverpool's most promising youngsters that opened the scoring on the quarter hour when Curtis Jones latched onto a through ball from Pedro Chirivella and calmly tucked it away past Shrewsbury keeper Max O'Leary.

Shrewsbury had a golden opportunity to equalise when Shaun Whalley broke in behind the Liverpool backline, but Adrian, deputising for Alisson, made a fine kick save to preserve his team's 1-0 lead.

Despite conceding over 70 percent of the possession to the Premier League visitors, Shrewsbury fashioned several chances on the counter and defended well as Liverpool took a 1-0 lead into half-time.

Unfortunately for the League One hosts the second half got off to a terrible start when Donald Love inexplicably turned a Liverpool cross into his own net less than a minute after the restart to put his team two down.

Shrewsbury were given a lifeline in the 64th minute when Liverpool's Yasser Larouci was whistled for a foul in the penalty area and Cummings stepped up and beat Adrian to cut the lead to 2-1.

Cummings then scored a surprising equaliser in the 75th minute, slipping a low line drive past Adrian at the near post to the delight of the home support.

Klopp brought on Mohamed Salah in hopes of avoiding a replay but the home side hung on and will now travel to Anfield to see who will advance to the fifth round of England's oldest annual cup competition.

Liverpool are next in action against West Ham on Jan. 29 to make up their game in hand in the Premier League.

Ex-Penn State WR Shorter headed to Florida

Published in Breaking News
Sunday, 26 January 2020 11:18

Former Penn State wide receiver Justin Shorter announced Sunday he is transferring to Florida. Shorter entered the transfer portal in November, 2019, and is now headed to the SEC to play for the Gators.

As a five-star recruit in the 2018 class, Shorter was the No. 8 overall recruit and was targeted by nearly every major program in the country. As a New Jersey native, Shorter committed to the Nittany Lions and chose to stay close to home.

His first season on campus, Shorter had three receptions for 20 yards and no touchdowns, following that with 12 receptions for 137 yards and no touchdowns in 2019.

Four of the top six leading receivers from this past season for the Gators are graduating or headed to the NFL, including Van Jefferson, Freddie Swain, Tyrie Cleveland and Josh Hammond.

Florida has made the wide receiver position a priority because of those losses, especially in the 2020 recruiting class. The staff has now added Shorter, as well as transfer Jordan Pouncey from Texas to go along with ESPN 300 wide receivers Xzavier Henderson, Jaquavion Fraziars and Marc Britt, as well as four-star receiver Leonard Manuel.

Henderson, Britt and Manuel are not signed, but are committed in the current 2020 recruiting class.

Super Bowl LIV picks and analysis from Pro Bowlers

Published in Breaking News
Sunday, 26 January 2020 05:46

The NFL's best gather in Orlando, Florida, this week to play in Sunday's Pro Bowl at Camping World Stadium (ABC/ESPN, 3 p.m. ET). How do they see Super Bowl LIV playing out between the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers?

We asked 18 Pro Bowlers and a Legends captain to weigh in on who's going to win the big game. Not everyone went on record and chose a winner, but everyone offered a take. Here's what they said:

PICKING THE 49ERS TO WIN

Shaquil Barrett

Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebacker

"The Niners -- but a really, really, really close game. It's just so hard, like it's hard, but I just think that [the 49ers'] defense is gonna limit [the Chiefs'] offense a little bit, and then if they do enough difficult stuff on offense of not being straightforward, then they'll get enough points."

What makes the Niners' defense special?

"Mentality, everybody want to make that play, everybody hungry to make that play and you can see it [in] the way they play."

Von Miller

Denver Broncos linebacker

"49ers. I can't go with the Chiefs. I can't go with the Chiefs."

Courtland Sutton

Denver Broncos wide receiver

"It's going to be a good game. Being a Broncos fan I can't cheer for the Chiefs. But it's going to be a good game. I'm not going to pick winner or loser but it will be a good game, and I can't pick the Chiefs so I guess that's my answer right there without saying it."

Jurrell Casey

Tennessee Titans defensive tackle

"Honestly I've got to go with my guys the 49ers. I'm a Cali guy, one, and then my boy Arik Armstead is up there, so I've got to go with my guy."

Casey: 'Your body goes through a whole lot through this sport'

Titans defensive lineman Jurrell Casey weighs in on the possibility of adding more regular-season games.

Cameron Heyward

Steelers defensive end

"I'm going to say San Fran. I think they've got a really good front four and they can get after it."

What about Patrick Mahomes?

"Mahomes is the X factor. I don't know what he's going to do but he's been carrying that team. I think everyone wants to see Andy Reid get one, but it's going to be tough versus that vaunted defense."

PICKING THE CHIEFS TO WIN

Marshal Yanda

Ravens offensive lineman

"I think it's going to be a really good game, but if you make me choose I'm going to go with the Chiefs. I think the Chiefs had a really good defensive performance against Derrick Henry so I think if they can keep that up vs. San Francisco's running game, that'll be good, and then I just think that Mahomes is going to make his plays. So I'm going with Kansas City."

Darius Leonard

Indianapolis Colts linebacker

"It's hard. I'm going to stay with the AFC, though. I say Kansas City might get it because their offense is pretty nasty. They've got a lot of weapons there. They've got a lot of speed there. One of my former teammates from South Carolina State [defensive back Alex Brown] is playing there so hopefully he can get it his rookie year."

Calais Campbell

Jacksonville Jaguars defensive end

"Kansas City Chiefs because I feel like they're playing really good defense right now and I think they'll be able to handle San Francisco's run game. But it's going to be a good ballgame because the 49ers have a defense to slow down the Chiefs, too."

Joe Haden

Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback

"I'm going to go with Kansas City. I'm just a Patrick Mahomes fan. I really love him. That offense is crazy and then their defense getting Tyrann Mathieu I think really, really helped them out. But I think their offense is just very, very powerful."

D.J. Chark

Jaguars wide receiver

"I'm gonna have to go with the Chiefs. I think I have more former college teammates with the Chiefs. And shoutout to Tyreek Hill for going to the Super Bowl so I could come here, so I'm going with the Chiefs. They're just explosive. But the 49ers are very good, too. It's gonna be a good game. I just like the explosive offense from the Chiefs."

Kyle Fuller

Chicago Bears cornerback

"Kansas City. I think they're pretty balanced, offense and defensive-wise, even special teams -- I think they're definitely a threat for sure with Patrick Mahomes and their receivers. I'm also a little bit biased. My brother [Kendall Fuller] is playing on their defense so ... but yeah, I'm gonna go with Kansas City."

On his brother, Kendall Fuller, playing in the Super Bowl

"It's pretty cool. I'm looking forward to watching him."

NFL testing out alternative for kickoffs in 2020 Pro Bowl

Dan Graziano says the NFL expects plenty of touchdowns in the Pro Bowl which gives them a chance to test out their new alternatives for kickoffs.

HOW THE SUPER BOWL WILL UNFOLD

Drew Brees

New Orleans Saints quarterback

"It's gonna be a heck of a battle. I'm excited to see it. I know everybody else is. We're talking about a super explosive offense -- with all those weapons. [Chiefs quarterback Patrick] Mahomes' ability just to make plays when there's nothing there ....

"The challenge that the 49ers present is that they have an excellent front seven, and lots of subbing in that can play ball, too. And then their back end is very good. So there's no weak link on that defense.

"On the flip side, the Niners' offense is so good at controlling the ball, running the ball. They've got weapons -- obviously their tight end and receiver position -- Jimmy Garoppolo's gonna have a terrific day. So it's almost gonna be like a game of keep-away -- just keep the ball away from Mahomes, because you know when he's out there, something exciting is gonna happen."

Earl Thomas

Baltimore Ravens safety

"That's a hard question because me and [49ers cornerback Richard] Sherman are really good friends. Me and [Chiefs defensive lineman] Frank Clark are really good friends. It's hard, man. It's tough. It's going to be a great game."

Jared Cook

Saints tight end

"Both offenses really use and really figure out a way to get their tight end involved. [Chiefs coach] Andy Reid really creates plays with Travis Kelce and the same with [49ers tight end] George Kittle. Big guys that run well, run well after the catch, run well after the first contact. That's gonna be tough because both of them are key in their offensive production. I'm not sure [who will win]. That's gonna be a tough one.

"San Fran's defense is good. But I feel like there's a blueprint out, and I feel like there's a way to beat 'em. I'm more excited about the offense. I feel like it could be a high-scoring game. Maybe one for the record books."

Mark Ingram

Ravens running back

"Man, I don't even care, man. For real, man. But I know it's two good teams. Mahomes is a beast. The Chiefs, they're hot. San Fran, tough defense, I love the way they run the football. It's just going to be a great game, man. I'm looking forward to it. I mean, I hate it, man. I hate it. ... I'm going to watch. I'm a fan of football. No matter how bad it hurts or stings I'm a fan of the game. I love watching the game so I'm always going to be tuned in."

Matthew Slater

New England Patriots special-teamer

"I don't really make Super Bowl picks. Two great teams. Obviously they've proven to be the two best teams over the course of the season. I think it'll be a really fantastic game. Great quarterback play, great defense, great players all over the field. But I don't make predictions. I just hope everybody's healthy and everybody plays a game that they can be proud of and we'll see how it goes."

Josh Allen

Jaguars defensive end

"For me, I don't got a team. I think it's going to be a really good game. You have probably the best offense in the NFL versus the best defense in the NFL. The defensive line for the 49ers are playing at an unbelievable level right now and you have Kansas City's offense that's putting up points that people don't do regularly. I feel like it's going to be a good battle. It's going to be a great battle. So I think the battle is going to be won with 49ers offense and Kansas City's defense. It's going to be a good game."

As a defensive guy, do you lean toward the best defensive team?

"I want to go with the best defense but I want to go with the best player. Patrick Mahomes, he's a generational player. You can't bet against a generational talent like that."

Budda Baker

Arizona Cardinals safety

"I see a high, prolific offense [with the Chiefs] versus a gritty defense that gets after the quarterback that gets their hands on the football [with the 49ers]. I'm just very excited to see that matchup. Same thing with the other side of the ball -- the Chiefs are doing a lot better getting turnovers. I know Tyrann [Mathieu] helped a lot with that. I'm just excited to see the defense really."

Bruce Smith

AFC Legends captain

"At this point I just don't [have a pick] right now. These teams are outstanding. They are both extremely talented. What I think it's going to come down to, though, is the 49ers' defensive line versus Patrick Mahomes and all the weapons that he has on offense.

"If they're able to put pressure on Patrick Mahomes and make him throw under duress, [that] doesn't allow him to extend the play. They are most explosive when he extends the play and runs around and finds that open receiver way downfield. Or he takes off. I think that could be the determining factor of the game, but right now I'm keeping my powder dry for another few days until I see the injury report."

Heat's Waiters takes blame for being suspended

Published in Basketball
Sunday, 26 January 2020 11:29

MIAMI -- Dion Waiters spoke about his issues for the first time in months Sunday, accepting responsibility for the matters that led him to being suspended by the Miami Heat on three separate occasions already this season.

Waiters didn't specifically address any incidents, including his decision to take cannabis-infused gummies on the team plane and needing emergency medical attention when that flight landed in Los Angeles. That led to a 10-game suspension in November; his other banishments were for the season opener after complaining about playing time, then a two-week one in December for continued violations of team policy.

"I'm a grown man. I don't point fingers. I could easily say this and that, but at the end of the day, it's me," Waiters said. "I made immature decisions. So, you know, I take full responsibility."

Waiters finally made his season debut for Miami on Friday, scoring 14 points in a loss to the LA Clippers. Miami plays again Monday against Orlando and Tuesday against Boston, and with several players -- including perimeter players Jimmy Butler, Goran Dragic and Kendrick Nunn all dealing with injuries -- there still could be a spot for Waiters in Miami's rotation.

"There's so many moving parts right now," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. "You just want everybody to put in the time behind the scenes and get into a healthy head space where you can contribute when your number is called and he did that. He still has a ways to go with his conditioning, particularly game conditioning. That's to be expected. But he's a gamer."

Waiters' suspensions have cost him about $1.4 million in salary this season. That doesn't include a $1.1 million bonus that he could have earned by appearing in 70 games, a level that has been mathematically out of reach for months.

"I'm happy for him. I'm very happy for him," Butler said. "He's working. He was ready to go out there and hoop and that's all we were saying, just stay ready. Now it's all about trying to stack up however many good days you can."

Waiters said he relied on family to get him through the suspensions and not playing, saying he would not let going through it all break him.

"I'm not going to lie to you, man. My kids. My kids, my family, my support system is so strong," Waiters said. "I've got a lot of good people in my life. You find that out when you go through them times. This is the first time I've been through something like this in my life. ... I don't feel like I lost anything, besides my money."

Waiters had a simple answer on whether he expects to keep playing.

"Hopefully," he said.

INJURIES

Justise Winslow (back) remains out for Miami, while Bam Adebayo (ankle) was listed as probable. Butler is questionable with a sprained ankle, Dragic is questionable with a sore calf and Nunn is questionable with a sore Achilles.

Butler said he would wait until he wakes up Monday before knowing if he can play against the Magic. He did, however, say that he wants to play, mindful that Miami is 0-1 against Orlando this season and has lost five of its last six against the Sunshine State rival.

"I would think that they think they're the best team in the state," Butler said. "We believe otherwise. We know otherwise. But we've got to go out and prove it."

Harden out against Nuggets with thigh injury

Published in Basketball
Sunday, 26 January 2020 11:19

Houston Rockets guard James Harden will not play in Sunday's game against the Denver Nuggets because of a left thigh contusion, according to coach Mike D'Antoni.

Harden left Friday's win over the Timberwolves in the third quarter after taking a knee from Karl-Anthony Towns to his thigh. He was limping badly but returned in the fourth quarter, finishing with 12 points and five assists.

D'Antoni said Harden is also considered doubtful to play Monday against the Utah Jazz. D'Antoni also added that Russell Westbrook will sit that game out as well.

This marks the second game Harden has missed this season. He also sat out a loss in New Orleans on Dec. 29.

Harden is averaging 36.1 points this season to lead the league and has scored 40 or more points 16 times. The Rockets are 14-2 when he does.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Juan Martin del Potro will have surgery in Miami on Monday in a bid to return from a serious knee injury.

Argentina's former US Open champion, 31, last played at Queen's Club in June where he fractured his right kneecap for a second time.

Surgery last summer failed to alleviate the pain, which has prevented normal activities, such as walking up stairs.

"We hope this is the definitive solution to eliminate the pain," said a statement on his Instagram account.

His team added: "It has not only prevented Delpo from playing tennis, but also making it difficult for him to perform daily activities."

Del Potro suffered the initial fracture of his kneecap in October 2018 in Shanghai. He made a comeback a few months later but the injury recurred when he slipped on the grass during a second-round match with Canada's Denis Shapovalov at the Fever Tree Championships last summer.

Plans to return for the European indoor season in October had to be shelved and now, after speaking to doctors in Europe, Argentina and the United States, it has been decided further surgery is necessary.

Del Potro won the US Open in 2009 and was runner-up in 2018, and has been a semi-finalist at Wimbledon and the French Open. He lost to Andy Murray in the 2016 Rio Olympics singles final before helping Argentina win the Davis Cup for the first time later in the year.

Since he made his Grand Slam debut in France in 2006, Del Potro has been forced to miss 19 of tennis' biggest events, but when fit, he has been a formidable opponent for Murray, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic.

No timeframe has been given for any potential return.
