Bangladesh's progress in specific areas in the batting haven't been in evidence in the ongoing T20I series in Lahore, according to batting coach Neil McKenzie. The former South Africa batsman, who opted against touring Pakistan and has been working with the Test specialists in Dhaka instead, said the players must trust the "no fear" mantra that coach Russell Domingo has been trying to drill into them.

Bangladesh have already conceded the three-T20I series after losing the first two games. They batted first on both occasions and only managed 141 and 136. They hardly dominated any phase of the games, and failed to build any impetus in the middle overs, which seemed to have improved after McKenzie became the batting coach.

"There's lot of inexperience in the squad at the moment. We knew that was going to be the case before we got there, but still it is disappointing," McKenzie said. "I think we missed out on a good start the other day (in the first T20I). What's been disappointing for me has been the intent. We have been working so hard in the last couple of years on rotation of strike, putting the bowler under pressure, where you are standing, making him bowl to where you want him to bowl, but I haven't seen too much of those in the last T20s.

"We know how he can play but it's also up to him to trust the guys around him. But the guys around him also have to be performing. When you have faith in the team and batting order, you can play a few more shots" Neil McKenzie on Tamim Iqbal

"The intent, looking to be a little bit more hungry, really playing with that 'no fear' that Russell and everybody tries to instill in the players. It is human nature. You have a few young guys and some guys who are getting back. There's a lot of pressure on the guys to perform and stay in the side, which is understandable, but hopefully they all understand that they are getting the backing from all the selectors and coach. They just have to go out there and play."

McKenzie, who has been praised for bringing about a fresh approach to Bangladesh's batting in limited-overs cricket, said that with so many top-order batsmen in the squad, Bangladesh don't have the required experience and expertise in the middle order. Shakib Al Hasan is out of the picture, and the absence of Mushfiqur Rahim - who also opted against touring - is certainly a big factor, but with Liton Das, Soumya Sarkar and Afif Hossain all having made runs in the top-order, it might have been difficult for them to adjust to a new batting position.

"I think you have to look at the combination of who is playing," he said. "Russell as a new coach is trying to look at some different combinations. I think at the moment we have too many batsman that bats at one, two and three. If you look around the squad, they are quality players but they are all top-order batters.

"It is a different skill to bat at No 4, 5 and 6. You are on nought, and all of a sudden you are facing a quality spinner. It is a different mindset. You have to know your game, try to rotate the strike and then go with your boundary options."

McKenzie explained that the players should think selfishly on behalf of the team, so that they finish off games after getting set. "I think there's an improvement [but] the turnover of players - by which I mean there's been a lot of players in my tenure here - is still too high for my liking. It just looks like no one is jumping out of the box, we need someone like [Mohammad] Naim. He got a great eighty [81] in India. He struggled the other day but he got a 40-odd, but we need more consistent innings like that from the Bangladesh batsmen.

"There's no doubt that Bangladesh is full of very talented cricketers, but we need a little bit more consistency. I want someone to be selfish in terms of winning games for the side. Not selfish for their own right. Selfish for not giving it away. If I have an 80, why can't I follow it up with a hundred, 140 or 200?

"A little bit more hunger for that consistency. A lot of the time, the guys are happy to play the next game. If you get a 40 or 60. It is the wrong mentality. I want the guys to try to be the best in the world, or be the best Bangladesh batsman. I think that's what we are trying to instill. We are making progress. But it has been a little bit frustrating."

McKenzie also asked for patience about Tamim Iqbal, who has scored 39 and 65 in the two games, but wasn't able to lift the scoring rate.

"I think you have to cut him a little bit of slack," McKenzie said. "He has been one of Bangladesh's best performers through the years. He is coming back from an injury and a few other things, so he is settling in. I think the positive thing for him is his runs under the belt. We all know what he can do, what he is capable of. You saw how he took it in the BPL final last year. I think we all want him to play more innings like that. He is probably one of Bangladesh's most consistent players.

"We know how he can play but it's also up to him to trust the guys around him. But the guys around him also have to be performing. When you have faith in the team and batting order, you can play a few more shots. I am glad to see him back. It seems he is in a good frame of mind. Hopefully it is the confidence he needs to kick-start and get him going, and turn those sixties into an eighty off 55 balls.

"He is an experienced player. He knows what he should be doing and how important he is for Bangladesh. It is a process, but we are looking for a little bit more fearless batting," he said.

Cyborg pummels Budd for historic 4th MMA title

Published in Breaking News
Saturday, 25 January 2020 22:12

INGLEWOOD, Calif. -- The shots came fast and with ferocity from Cris Cyborg. A knee. A left hand to the head and a right to the body. A hard right kick to the legs. Again and again. Before long, it was over.

It was that kind of long combination, thrown with maximum force, that made Cyborg one of the most feared fighters -- man or woman -- in MMA history. And 15 years into her storied career, she landed another vintage, historic finish.

Cyborg defeated Julia Budd by TKO at 1 minute, 14 seconds of the fourth round Saturday night in the main event of Bellator 238 to win the Bellator women's featherweight title at The Forum. Cyborg completed an unprecedented MMA grand slam, becoming the first fighter to win titles in the UFC, Bellator, Strikeforce and Invicta FC.

"I feel really happy to have the opportunity to make history," Cyborg said. "This is gonna be cool. The only fighter to win four titles [in those different organizations]. It just means we don't quit. I had a lot of downs, good times in my career. But I don't quit. It made me strong."

In December 2018, in the same Los Angeles-area building, Cyborg was knocked out by Amanda Nunes to lose her UFC women's featherweight title. On Saturday, she exorcised those demons, clad in purple and gold in the former home of the Showtime Lakers.

"I was not sad. I feel like everything happens for a reason," Cyborg said of the loss to Nunes. "If I did not lose the belt that today, I would not be here now, champion of Bellator. And here, I'm happy. [In the UFC], I was not happy."

Cyborg, one of the best women's MMA fighters of all time, was making her Bellator debut after departing the UFC in August. Budd had won 11 straight coming in and had not lost since 2011 against Ronda Rousey.

Budd was game until the end. She was able to outmuscle Cyborg at times in the early rounds. By the third, though, Cyborg had seized control. She finished that round in full mount, raining down blows. And in the fourth, the Brazilian buzz saw let loose with a ridiculous combo that started with a knee and effectively ended with a body shot that crumpled Budd to the canvas. It was a brutal display of aggression, the likes of which fans who have followed Cyborg's career have become familiar with.

Cyborg (22-2, 1 NC) has now finished 18 of her 22 victories by KO/TKO. Her only loss since 2005 was the knockout via Nunes. She was unable to come to terms with the UFC for that rematch before ending up with Bellator. Cyborg, 34, owns wins over former UFC champion Holly Holm, former Invicta champion Tonya Evinger and women's MMA pioneers Gina Carano and Marloes Coenen.

Budd (13-3) had won seven straight in Bellator. The British Columbia native had been Bellator women's featherweight champion since 2017. Budd, 36, has lost to only three women in her MMA career: Cyborg, Rousey and Nunes.

"I'll be back stronger," Budd said.

Cyborg's final UFC fight came at UFC 240 on July 27, 2019. Her contract expired with that bout, and UFC president Dana White told UFC.com days later that the promotion no longer wanted to be "in the Cris Cyborg business." Cyborg's relationship with the UFC was dysfunctional from the start, with Cyborg accusing White and UFC brass of bullying and Cyborg's team doctoring a video after UFC 240 that inaccurately quoted White in subtitles.

Cyborg apologized for the latter incident, but the damage was done. She signed with Bellator in September. Scott Coker, who is now Bellator's president, promoted Cyborg a decade ago while with the now-defunct Strikeforce.

According to the California State Athletic Commission, Cyborg made a guaranteed minimum of $250,000 at Bellator 238, while Budd took home a minimum of $350,000.

In the co-main event of Bellator 238, Darrion Caldwell defeated Adam Borics via rear-naked choke submission at 2:20 of the first round in a Bellator Featherweight World Grand Prix quarterfinal matchup.

Caldwell will now meet A.J. McKee in the semifinals of the tournament on a date that has yet to be determined.

Caldwell (14-3) is a former two-time Bellator bantamweight champion and a former NCAA wrestling champion. The 32-year-old New Jersey native has won two in a row and six of his past eight fights.

Borics (14-1), a 26-year-old Hungary native, was undefeated coming in, with five straight Bellator wins.

Milos Raonic moved past 2018 finalist Marin Cilic in straight sets to reach the Australian Open quarter-finals.

The 29-year-old Canadian won 6-4 6-3 7-5 at Melbourne Park.

Both players are known for their firepower but Raonic, seeded 32nd, dominated the Croat throughout with almost double the number of winners and 35 aces compared to Cilic's five.

He will play defending champion Novak Djokovic or Argentine Diego Schwartzman in the last eight.

Unseeded Cilic did have two set points when leading 5-4 in the third set but Raonic saved them and then broke his opponent in the next game before serving out the win.

Seventh seed Petra Kvitova battled from a set down to defeat Greek Maria Sakkari 6-7 (4-7) 6-3 6-2 and reach the Australian Open quarter-finals.

The pair struggled with their service games in a contest where there were 12 breaks and 28 chances to do so.

After trailing by a set and a break, Kvitova broke herself in the seventh and ninth games to take the second set.

The 22nd seed's level dropped further in the third as the Czech 2019 finalist sealed victory with another break.

Kvitova will now face either world number one Ashleigh Barty or American Alison Riske in Melbourne.

"I don't know how I found my game," she said when asked about her fightback. "I just kept playing. I knew it would be a difficult match."

Thornton Tops Winter Challenge Opener

Published in Racing
Saturday, 25 January 2020 17:40

PEORIA, Ariz. – Ricky Thornton Jr. pocketed $1,250 for his victory in Saturday’s IMCA modified main event that opened the Winter Challenge series at Canyon Speedway Park.

It was the season opening event for the Peoria, Ariz., dirt oval. The first of four Winter Challenge series events that featured four IMCA divisions and dwarf cars drew 84 cars to the quarter-mile.

Zach Madrid and Thornton formed an impressive front row for the 25-lap IMCA modified main. Racing the opening lap side by side halfway around the oval, Thornton won the race to turn three with an outside line drive

Once in the lead, Thornton was in control despite eight restarts. Each time Thornton quickly reestablished his lead before finally reaching the checkers. Madrid finished second and Chas Baca Jr. was third.

All but one of the 24 Northern sport mods started the 20-lap, $1,000-to-win main, with the top 12 from heat races redrawing for the front six rows.

Shelby Frye used her outside front row redraw to lead all the laps, smoothly handling four restarts.  Finishing second was another young lady, Taylor Kuehl, with Camron Spangler third to fill the podium. This was the second win this month for Frye after taking the checkers at Cocopah Speedway.

IMCA stock cars had an 18-car field with $1,000 to the 20-lap main event winner.  Chance Hallatz led six laps before Andy Altenburg ran the bottom from turn one to turn four to complete what became the winning pass.

Pressure behind Altenburg was nonstop, but the Truman, Minn., driver made no mistakes and posted the win in the division.

Hobby stocks had 10 cars on hand, with eight starting the 20-lap main. Minot, N.D., driver Brad King drove under Jason Duggins early and controlled the remaining laps for the $500 win.

Six of 10 dwarf cars started their 20-lap feature and Dustin Washburn used the lower groove on the backstretch to lead the final 15 laps.

Heim Tops Chaotic SpeedFest Main Event

Published in Racing
Saturday, 25 January 2020 18:16

CORDELE, Ga. – Corey Heim emerged the victor in a wild and chaotic finish to the ARCA/CRA Super Series portion of SpeedFest on Saturday at Crisp Motorsports Park.

For most of the race it appeared that the battle was going to be between super late model stalwarts Bubba Pollard and Stephen Nasse. Nasse was the leader during a restart with 18 laps left that saw the duo go to war for the lead.

After battling for the top spot for four laps, Pollard made contact with Nasse as they raced in turn two. The bump moved Nasse up the track and out of the way, allowing Pollard to take the race lead.

That wasn’t the end of the contact, as Nasse returned the favor in turn four that sent Pollard spinning. The caution flag was waved and Nasse was penalized for rough driving, which sent him to the rear of the field alongside Pollard.

That wasn’t the end of things for Pollard and Nasse as the two made contact again with 11 laps left while they were battling at the back of the field, resulting in Nasse spinning to bring out another caution.

This time both drivers opted to retire from the race, but words were exchanged between drivers and crews on pit road as neither group was happy with the other.

Meanwhile, Heim and Kyle Plott suddenly found themselves at the front of the field battling for the race win. Another late caution resulted in the pair battling for the lead during a two-lap shootout, with Heim beating Plott to the finish line in a photo finish to earn the victory.

Dawson Fletcher finished third, followed by Willie Allen and Daniel Dye.

The finish:

Corey Heim, Kyle Plott, Dawson Fletcher, Willie Allen, Daniel Dye, Jake Garcia, Jeff Fultz, Brandon Jones, Brian Campbell, Tyler Roahrig, Steve Dorer, Hudson Halder, Shefflon Clay, David Hodges, Eric White, Bubba Pollard, Stephen Nasse, Kyle Seig, Jeremy Pate, Travis Braden, Gabe Sommers, Jeff Firestine, John Coffman, Connor Okrzesik, Nicholas Naugle, Jack Dossey III, Greg Van Alst.

Mazda Moves To The Front In Rolex 24

Published in Racing
Saturday, 25 January 2020 18:58

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Mazda Team Joest was at the front of the field with eight hours complete in the Rolex 24 Saturday night at Daytona Int’l Speedway.

The No. 77 Mazda RT24-P shared by Oliver Jarvis, Olivier Pla and Tristian Nunez cycled to the front of the field under a caution period late in the eighth hour caused by the No. 38 Performance Tech LMP2 entry, which found itself stuck in a tire barrier in the infield portion of the course.

For much of the race it’s been a war between the No. 77 entry, the No. 10 Wayne Taylor Racing Cadillac DPi and the No. 6 Acura Team Penske entry for the race lead. Each have taken turns at the front of the field and the trio appear to have the fastest cars in the top DPi class.

The Wayne Taylor Racing entry, shared by Kamui Kobayashi, Renger van der Zande, Scott Dixon and Ryan Briscoe, was leading the race at the completion of the sixth hour, which gave them the maximum five points toward the IMSA Michelin Endurance Cup.

In GT Le Mans, the No. 24 BMW Team RLL M8 GTE was setting the pace with Augusto Farfus at the wheel. He’s sharing the car with John Edwards and Chaz Mostert. The No. 24 entry moved to the front of the field in the fifth hour ahead of the factory Porsche entries, which also allowed the No. 24 entry to top the Michelin Endurance Cup standings.

The No. 48 Paul Miller Racing Lamborghini Huracan GT3 shared by Madison Snow, Bryan Sellers, Cory Lewis and Andrea Caldarelli was in charge of the GT Daytona class after eight hours, but the battle for the victory in that class remained wide open.

The No. 9 Pfaff Motorsports Porsche 911 GT3 R dominated the early portion of the race in GT Daytona, but fell off the pace in the fifth hour and was the last car on the lead lap in that class. The team, with drivers Zacharie Robichon, Dennis Olsen, Lars Kern and Patrick Pilet, have since fought back and moved back into second at the start of the ninth hour.

In the Michelin Endurance Cup standings, Marco Mapelli topped the class in the No. 44 GRT Magnus Lamborghini Huracán GT3 at the six hour mark.

Finally, in LMP2, the No. 52 PR1-Mathiasen Motorsports ORECA co-driven by Gabriel Aubry, Ben Keating, Simon Trummer and Nick Boulle remained in control. The PR1-Mathiasen squad has led nearly every lap in the class through eight hours. They also topped the Michelin Endurance Cup standings at the six-hour mark.

The race’s first full course caution came out in the fifth hour of the race for an incident involving the GT Daytona cars of Eric Lux in the No. 47 Precision Performance Motorsports Lamborghini and Alex Riberas in the No. 23 Heart of Racing Aston Martin. The cars made contact near the pit entry and both slid through the infield grass.

Lux got the No. 47 running and made his way into the pits, but the No. 23 suffered substantial front-end damage and could not be driven back and later retired from the race.

Rahm (65) takes Farmers lead as Rory, Tiger rise

Published in Golf
Saturday, 25 January 2020 11:45

Jon Rahm turned in a 7-under 65 in Saturday's third round at Torrey Pines' South Course as he took a one-shot lead at the Farmers Insurance Open. Here's everything you need to know heading into the final round in San Diego:

LEADERBOARD

1. Jon Rahm, -12

2. Ryan Palmer, -11

T-3. Rory McIlroy, -9

T-3. Sung Kang, -9

T-3. Harry Higgs, -9

T-3. Cameron Champ. -9

WHAT IT MEANS

A juicy final round is on tap at Torrey Pines thanks to several enticing storylines among the contenders.

The Sunday headliner will be Tiger Woods, who is just five shots back as he chases his PGA Tour-record 83rd career victory. A win would mean even more considering it would come at Torrey Pines, a place where Woods has already won eight times, including the 2008 U.S. Open.

But if Woods fails to orchestrate a final-day charge, McIlroy could be the one stealing the show and returning to world No. 1 in the process. McIlroy, who is three shots off the lead, hasn't sat atop the Official World Golf Ranking since September 2015. A victory Sunday would put McIlroy at No. 1 for the 96th week, just one shy of Nick Faldo, who is third on the list of most weeks atop the OWGR behind only Woods (683) and Greg Norman (331).

Then there is Rahm, the 25-year-old Spaniard, who is looking for his 10th worldwide victory as a pro, third in his past five starts and second at Torrey Pines.

HOW IT HAPPENED

A day after shooting 10-under 62 on the North Course, Palmer returned to the South and shot 71. He carded four birdies, but three front-nine bogeys knocked Palmer back early.

That left the door open for Rahm to rocket up the leaderboard and seize the lead with a sizzling 65 that included a hole-out eagle at the par-4 second hole from 111 yards and no bogeys.

McIlroy delivered a six-birdie, third-round 67 to give himself a chance to win the Farmers in just his second start at Torrey. He tied for fifth last year in his debut.

Woods looked to be putting together a low one with four front-nine birdies, but he shot 1 over with no birdies on the tougher back side and finished with a 3-under 69.

SHOT OF THE DAY

Jordan Spieth shot 1-over 73 Saturday, but he did birdie two of his final four holes, including this chip-in at the par-4 15th hole:

BEST OF THE REST

Former Florida standout Tyler McCumber earned himself a third-round tee time alongside Woods, and McCumber responded with a bogey-free 68 to move to 8 under, four back. Tony Finau and Marc Leishman are also 8 under after third-round 68s of their own.

Sung Kang's bogey-free 67 has him tied with McIlroy, Champ (68) and Higgs (69) at 9 under.

Also shooting 67 Saturday was Tom Hoge, who is 7 under. Hoge closed the fall with four straight missed cuts, but he tied for sixth last week in Palm Springs after sharing 12th at Sony. He was runner-up at the Greenbrier to begin the fall.

BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT

Matthew NeSmith bogeyed four of his last six holes, shot 76 and fell from third to outside the top 40, nine shots back.
