The last time Wales started a Six Nations campaign with a new head coach in charge, George North was 15 years old.

Now a 27-year-old veteran of 91 Wales caps, three World Cups and two British and Irish Lions tours, the wing is a constant in a time of change.

Wayne Pivac has been tasked with following Warren Gatland's 12-year reign, the longest and most successful in Welsh rugby history - and the reigning Grand Slam champions are not the only ones in a state of flux.

Four of the Six Nations sides will be under the guidance of new coaches, while there have also been four changes of captain.

North remains, though, even if the new order takes some getting used to.

"Yeah, the time I've been in the Welsh jersey, Gats has been at the helm - 12 years is a decent shift," he says with knowing understatement.

"New coaches are coming in now, Wayne and the crew. This will be the first proper opportunity they'll have to show what they want to do and put their own stamp on it.

"For me and a few of the older boys it will be a bit of a change, but it's something that probably comes at a good time after the World Cup, get that new energy in."

A Six Nations campaign after a World Cup often represents a fresh start, the beginning of another four-year cycle as teams train their long-term sights on the next instalment of rugby's ultimate prize.

There are retirements - former Scotland and France captains Greig Laidlaw and Guilhem Guirado among them - as the old guard bid farewell.

'Rees-Zammit was me 10 years ago' - North

Then there is the introduction of youth, none more striking than in the Wales squad, whose five uncapped players include the precociously skilful 18-year-old Gloucester wing, Louis Rees-Zammit.

His emergence has come with more than a hint of deja vu for North, who was also 18 when he was first called up by Wales, scoring two tries on his debut against South Africa in 2010.

"It's scary to think that was me 10 years ago, which I don't like to say," North laughs.

"It's brilliant for him. I remember it like yesterday - probably the best experience of my life to be called up and to have the opportunity to play for my country.

"I think he'll thrive in the camp. He's playing incredibly well at the moment."

Rees-Zammit's spectacular rise to prominence - scoring 10 tries in his past 11 appearances - has added to Wales' burgeoning options in the back three, with a rejuvenated Leigh Halfpenny and the uncapped Johnny McNicholl competing with North, Liam Williams and the World Cup's top try scorer Josh Adams.

However, Pivac's wealth of choice of outside backs is in contrast to his shortage of centres, following injuries to Jonathan Davies, Owen Watkin and Willis Halaholo.

That has raised the prospect of North potentially switching from the wing to 13, where he has started four Tests for Wales over the course of his decade in international rugby.

"I guess if required I've played there before and enjoyed the position," says North.

"Obviously I'm a wing, but I played most of my age-grade stuff at centre and I have done for Wales a couple of times.

"For me it's another string to my bow. Obviously if needed I'll play for my country in any position. I'm not playing second row though!

"It's exciting and we'll see how we go."

World Cup 'hurt' can help Wales

North has played his past two matches for the Ospreys at centre, returning to action earlier this month having recovered from a hamstring injury suffered during Wales' World Cup semi-final loss to South Africa.

That was an agonising defeat for Wales, their injury-ravaged side succumbing to a 76th-minute penalty by Handre Pollard after a brutal encounter in Japan.

Last year's tournament had seemed like Wales' best chance yet to reach a first World Cup final. Their preparations had been meticulous, while a record 14-match winning run had briefly taken them to the top of the world rankings.

"You invest so much time and effort, physically and emotionally," North says.

"The squad effort is a two-year or three-year build-up to it.

"The World Cup was disappointing to miss out on that last step, but we did tremendously well to get as far as we did with the run of games we had.

"I'm just excited to be back playing now. I needed a bit of a break after the World Cup, but my focus now quickly turns to the Six Nations and how quickly that comes around."

North says that World Cup hurt will "help" Wales during the Six Nations, not that they will need any added incentive as they aim to defend their title.

There's a baby due in April...

Whether or not Wales can start Pivac's reign with a Grand Slam - as they did with Gatland's back in 2008 - may seem trivial, however, when North considers what lies in wait after the tournament.

In April, he and his wife Becky, an Olympic silver medal-winning cyclist, are expecting their first child.

"We're both very excited now," North says.

"A lot of our circle of friends, there's a kind of baby boom happening. We've both come from big families so it's exciting for us and exciting for our families as well.

"It will probably be our biggest challenge, but we're looking forward to it."

Solskjaer: Man United made strides in Liverpool loss

Published in Soccer
Tuesday, 21 January 2020 02:08

Manchester United made "strides forward" during the defeat to Liverpool, according to manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

United fell to a 2-0 defeat at Anfield on Sunday but the Norwegian insists he saw enough from his team to suggest they are "on the right track."

"We've lost to Liverpool, a team that you all say are fantastic and we've been in the game until the last kick of the ball," Solskjaer said.

"And, for me, that's strides forward. And of course we're disappointed losing the game, we don't want to be behind them in the league, but there were signs there that we are on the right track, definitely."

Defeat to Liverpool, who top the table by 16 points with a game in hand, prompted former United defender and Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville to lay the blame for more than six years of poor recruitment at the door of executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward.

Neville suggested Woodward should be sacked but at a news conference on Tuesday, Solskjaer was reluctant to add any more fuel to the fire.

"Now is not the time to speak about recruitment," Solskjaer said.

"We're looking to the next game against Burnley. We're always looking to improve the squad and to improve the club but for my mind, now is not the time, Gary, to start this discussion."

United face Burnley at Old Trafford on Wednesday without top scorer Marcus Rashford, who is set for a spell on the sidelines with a back injury.

Solskjaer has received criticism for playing the 22-year-old in the FA Cup third round replay with Wolves but the United boss has defended his handling of the problem. "He'll get the time he needs to recover," Solskjaer said.

"We're always looking at improving the squad and seeing if there's anything out there but nothing I can talk about now.

"He's not had that injury before, no. He complained a little bit after Burnley. He felt it the first time, and we managed him as well as we could then.

"He had some days off for treatment and suddenly this was a new injury. He didn't have any injuries before then."

Wenger: Arsenal soulless since moving from Highbury

Published in Soccer
Tuesday, 21 January 2020 00:27

Arsene Wenger has said Arsenal "lost our soul" when they left Highbury to move to the Emirates Stadium.

Highbury was the home of Arsenal for 93 years, with Wenger famously guiding their "Invincibles" to an unbeaten season at the ground in 2003-04, but the club have not seen the same level of success since moving home, only winning three FA Cups in the 13 seasons they've spent at the Emirates.

Mikel Arteta's side are 10th in the Premier League, and with the club languishing at arguably its lowest ebb since making the move to the Emirates, Wenger has now claimed that the soul of the club was left behind when Highbury was knocked down in 2006.

"We built a new stadium but we never found our soul -- we left our soul at Highbury," Wenger told beIN Sport.

"We could never recreate it for security reasons. The distance from the pitch to the stand had to be bigger as we needed ambulances to come in.

"The inclination of the stands had to be smaller all those things together that we didn't find to recreate the atmosphere."

Wenger made the comments during a joint-interview with Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, with the German looking to become only the second manager in the Premier League's history to guide a team to an unbeaten season.

Anfield has been a fortress for Liverpool in recent years, with the side not suffering a league defeat there since being beaten by Crystal Palace back in April 2017, and Wenger believes the intimidating atmosphere is a key reason behind Liverpool's title charge.

"[Anfield] is the best stadium in England," Wenger said. "It's simple because the people are so close to the pitch. People really love football in every family, they are football connoisseurs.

"I've been in positions there where I've been leading 5-1 with five minutes to go and they were chanting 'You'll Never Walk Alone.' It's one of the few cities, maybe the only city in the world where you find that.

"I moved from Highbury [with Arsenal], it was a bit similar to Anfield, if not the same."

Mbappe: Liverpool 'like a machine' right now

Published in Soccer
Tuesday, 21 January 2020 01:50

Paris Saint-Germain forward Kylian Mbappe has likened runaway Premier League leaders Liverpool to "a machine" and expressed his awe at their ability to keep winning under pressure.

Speaking with BBC Sport after launching his charity Inspired by Kylian Mbappe, the 21-year-old marvelled at the Reds' run of form that has put them 16 points clear of second-placed Manchester City with a game in hand.

"What Liverpool do in this moment is amazing," Mbappe said. "They are like a machine, they have found a rhythm and are like 'we play again, we play again.'

"They have lost zero games. When you watch you think everything is easy but that is not easy. The guys are focused -- they play games every three days and they win, win, win.

- Ex-Liverpool CEO Ayre: Klopp like a 'prophet'

Despite opponents being able to identify ways to cause Liverpool problems, Mbappe is impressed with the way Klopp's men find the strength to keep pushing on.

"Now the problem is that everybody watches Liverpool, and everybody watches what we can do against them, so now they have to show they are strong again," the France international said. "It is a very good team with a very good manager, though."

Mbappe has been regularly linked with a move to Real Madrid but asked about a potential future switch he said it was not the time to discuss his future.

"Everyone talks about it," he said. "When I was young, I talked about it too, but now I am a player and I know it is not the moment.

"We are in January. It is the money time of the season. Imagine I answer your question and say something. Everybody will talk about it and it is not good for PSG.

"Now I am with PSG and I am 100% with the club. I want to help the club grow this season, to win a lot of titles, so for me it is not good to talk about [my future].

Mbappe is putting PSG first because of the confidence they showed in him when signing him from Monaco back in the summer of 2017 and turning him into an established star name but suggested he will make a decision on his future in the coming months.

"I think about the club because the club helped me," Mbappe said. "I came here at 18. I was a talent, but I was not a superstar. Now I am a superstar, thanks to PSG and the French national team.

"I have to stay calm and stay focused on PSG. After that, at the end of the season, we will see. But now I am focused on my game."

Looking ahead to the coming year, Mbappe revealed he is dreaming of Champions League, Euro 2020 and Olympic success for club and country.

"[My dream] would be a treble of the Champions League, the European Championship and the Olympic Games," he said. "That would not be bad.

"That seems unattainable for the time being, but I am going to make sure that I fulfill this dream. It would be a proud moment to be able to win the first European [title] for PSG and for our country to keep winning.

"Now people know how I play and how good I can be, I have to work to stay at this level. I have to be better. PSG is a young club; we do not have the history of the other clubs -- but we want to create the history."

With a slate of midweek Premier League matches, here is what to look out for.

THE WEEK'S BIG QUESTIONS

Could Arsenal still make the Champions League places?

Under normal circumstances a team in tenth place, ten points adrift of the top four with 15 games to go, could probably stick their passports away for the following season, safe in the knowledge that they wouldn't be playing in Europe's elite competition. However, things are a little different this season, the campaign in which apparently nobody actually wants to qualify for the Champions League, with all the main contenders tossing around points like confetti.

Arsenal, therefore, are in with a chance. But only if they beat Chelsea on Tuesday, and that's in the words of their manager. "It's very, very important for us to win this game to fight for [the top four]," Mikel Arteta said this week. "The game we played at home could have made a big difference and we were very close to it. Tomorrow we need to win." Victory will take them to within seven points of their rivals: not a small gap, but one that looks very achievable.

Can Chelsea do something about their inconsistency problem?

Following Chelsea this season has been, at the very least, entertaining. It has been since the end of October anyway: since then, a run lasting 19 games in all competitions, they have only registered the same result in consecutive games once, and that was the back-to-back victories against Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup and Burnley in the league at the start of this month. Otherwise, they haven't managed to string two wins together, not even two draws or two defeats.

- ESPN Premier League fantasy: Sign up now!
- VAR in the Premier League: Ultimate guide
- How VAR has affected every Premier League club
- When does the transfer window close?

The most obvious explanation for that is their talented but incomplete and inexperienced squad: with that, this sort of inconsistency is perhaps inevitable. But it's still a concern: Chelsea's grip on fourth place has loosened with this inconsistency, and if Frank Lampard wants his side to be sure of a spot in the Champions League, he has to get them winning like they were in the autumn.

Could Sheffield United get something against Manchester City?

It was slightly unusual to see Chris Wilder display even a hint of an inferiority complex, but when he was asked about his Sheffield United side's prospects against Manchester City, he puffed his cheeks out and chuckled, as if he was the manager of a plucky lower league side drawn against them in the FA Cup.

But Wilder will know that City are vulnerable: they've already dropped more points in 23 games this season than they did in the whole of last term, beaten already by brave minnows like Wolves, Norwich and Manchester United.

So there's really no reason why Wilder's Blades can't get something from the visit of City. Wilder might have been cautious in public, but you can guarantee he will be filling his players with the confidence to beat their stumbling behemoth opponents.

Has the Premier League turned into La Liga?

Ale Moreno believes Liverpool and Manchester City dwarf a large number of "mediocre" Premier League clubs.

MAN TO WATCH

Adama Traore

The one pinprick of light for the other 19 teams in the Premier League used to be Liverpool's inability to keep a clean sheet. In their first 15 games, they only kept their opponents out on two occasions, but in the subsequent seven fixtures they haven't let in a single goal: the last time Liverpool conceded was on December 4, to Everton, some 675 minutes of football ago. They're an utterly absurd team, now at both ends of the pitch.

So it will need something pretty special to breach their backline: step forward probably the most exciting non-Liverpool player in the Premier League at the moment, Adama Traore. Wolves's resources are stretched sugar paper-thin at the moment but their lack of depth is currently being compensated for by brilliance in the players they do have available, most notably Traore who inspired their comeback win at Southampton on Saturday. If anyone is going to break Liverpool down, you fancy it will be someone like Traore.

THE GAME YOU'RE NOT PLANNING TO WATCH...BUT SHOULD

Leicester v West Ham

Even with Leicester's new lofty position in the top four, the prospect of this match doesn't really quicken the pulse. But it will be interesting just to see whether Leicester's recent results and performances represent a blip or something more serious. You can perhaps forgive dropping points against a resurgent Southampton or away to a Burnley side who will always provide a stiff test. But if they don't win at home to West Ham, for whom the new manager shine from David Moyes's return has already firmly dimmed, then there could be more significant problems afoot.

THE TEAM THAT NEEDS A BIT OF LUCK

Newcastle United

Steve Bruce doesn't really need any luck at the moment when it comes to results (although the win over Chelsea was their first victory in four), but he could do with some gods of fate looking upon him a little more kindly as far as injuries are concerned. Jetro Willems was the latest to fall lame, out for the season with a cruciate knee ligament injury, while Paul Dummett has also been ruled out for a long spell and Fabian Schar is only just coming back from his injury sustained just before Christmas. Newcastle could just do with all of their important players staying upright at the moment.

NOTABLE STATS OF MIDWEEK MATCHES

Provided by ESPN Stats & Information

- Arsenal and Chelsea will play for the 200th time across all competitions, with Arsenal leading the series with 77 wins (65 for Chelsea) and 57 draws.

- Tottenham have been held scoreless in three consecutive Premier League matches for the first time since November 2013.

- Manchester United have a 10-game unbeaten streak vs. Burnley (6-0-4), with their last loss to the Clarets coming in August 2009.

- Liverpool's 64 points through 22 matches is the best start ever in Europe's Top 5 leagues.

ONE THING THAT WILL DEFINITELY HAPPEN

Troy Deeney will score against Aston Villa

Perhaps it's because of the Birmingham City tattoo that adorns his chest, but Troy Deeney seems to light up at the very thought of playing Aston Villa: he's faced them three times in his career so far, and has five goals to show for it. He bagged a brace against them a few weeks ago, and given Watford's uptick in form and Villa's assorted fragilities, a bet on him finding the net again looks like a pretty safe one.

PREDICTIONS
Crystal Palace 2-2 Southampton
Aston Villa 1-2 Watford
Bournemouth 0-0 Brighton
Everton 2-0 Newcastle United
Sheffield United 1-1 Manchester City
Chelsea 3-2 Arsenal
Tottenham 2-1 Norwich City
Leicester 1-0 West Ham United
Manchester United 2-0 Burnley
Wolves 1-3 Liverpool

The majority of the Australia one-day squad will return to Big Bash action over the next few days for the backend of the regular season and then the finals for the teams that make it.

Of the players who were in India, only David Warner, Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc - who don't have BBL deals - will not be available.

Here is a rundown of who each team gets back:

Melbourne Stars

Peter Handscomb, who did not get a game in India, will return to bolster the middle order and will likely resume the wicketkeeping duties from Seb Gotch. Adam Zampa will be back as a key part of the spin attack for the Stars who are already assured of hosting the Qualifier on January 31 with the loser of that match earning a second chance to reach the final by playing in the Challenger on February 6.

Sydney Sixers

The Sixers are among the teams currently fighting for second spot to play the Stars and, for the first time in six years, will be able to call on Steven Smith who is available from the match against the Brisbane Heat at the Gabba. Josh Hazlewood will be given a few extra days rest after the India tour, but will likely be available for the Sixers' final regular season game against the Melbourne Renegades and the finals. They remain unsure whether Sean Abbott will have recovered in time for the finals, by when they will have lost Tom Curran to England duty.

Adelaide Strikers

Alex Carey's return will bolster the Strikers' middle order as they push for second place and for the first time this season they will be able to field their strongest possible batting line-up with Carey and Travis Head back in harness.

Perth Scorchers

Ashton Turner and Ashton Agar will be back in the fold as the Scorchers look to build on their handsome victory against the Sydney Thunder. They will hope that Turner's lean time in India does not impact his form for the final stretch of the tournament. Morne Morkel will also play the final regular season match against the Thunder - which may well be a decider for qualification - in place of Chris Jordan so he is eligible for the finals.

Sydney Thunder

The Thunder did not have anyone in the one-day squad. Last season Cummins made one late-season outing for them but he will not play this year.

Brisbane Heat

Marnus Labuschagne is available to add to his seven T20 outings and he may well be seen as a key to stopping the sort of batting collapses - that reached new heights against the Renegades - which have left the Heat battling to reach the finals.

Hobart Hurricanes

It will likely be too late to save their season, but D'Arcy Short and Matthew Wade will be able to link up at last at the top of the order for the Hurricanes' last two matches having not joined forces this season due to their respective international commitments. Short spent the three matches in India carrying the drinks after his late call-up to replace the injured Abbott.

Melbourne Renegades

It is officially all over for the Renegades after their horror run of nine defeats on the bounce ended any chance of defending their title. However, they have won their last two games - extraordinarily so against the Heat - and should have Aaron Finch and Kane Richardson back for the final two outings which could cause problems for opposition still looking to secure their finals berths.

Sachin Tendulkar and Courtney Walsh will coach the Ricky Ponting and Shane Warne teams respectively in the Bushfire Cricket Bash on February 8.

The bushfire relief match will take place ahead of the Big Bash final with the venue to be confirmed on January 31 after the Qualifier is played with the winning team hosting the final. Before that double-header, the Australia and India women's teams will play their tri-series match in Melbourne and it could be the city hosts the trio of matches if the Melbourne Stars secure the BBL final at the MCG.

ALSO READ: Shane Warne and Ricky Ponting to lead teams in bushfire relief match

Alongside Ponting and Warner, Justin Langer, Adam Gilchrist, Brett Lee, Shane Watson, Alex Blackwell and Michael Clarke have confirmed they will take part in the match.

"We are absolutely honoured to be welcoming Sachin and Courtney back to Australia where they both enjoyed a lot of success as players, and we can't wait to have them involved in what is going to be a special day," the Cricket Australia CEO, Kevin Roberts, said.

The Bushfire Cricket Bash is one of a range of initiatives the sport has undertaken to raise funds for those impacted by the devastating bushfires around the country over the last few months. They have included auctioning Test and BBL shirts and players donating money for sixes hit and wickets taken in various competitions.

New Zealand's depth will be tested in the T20I series against India, but Ross Taylor sees it as a good chance for fringe players to stake a claim for spots in the World Cup squad later this year.

The five-match series, part of a full tour by India, which also includes three ODIs and two Tests, begins in Auckland on Friday with New Zealand shorn of two key bowlers - Trent Boult (hand injury) and Lockie Ferguson (calf injury) - who will certainly be part of the T20 World Cup if fit.

A number of other seamers who could have been in the frame - Matt Henry, Seth Rance, Doug Bracewell and Adam Milne - are also nursing injuries, meaning the T20I squad will lean heavily on the experience of Tim Southee along with spinners Mitchell Santner and Ish Sodhi.

New Zealand's most recent T20I series saw them lose 3-2 against England at the beginning of the season - with the deciding match going down to a Super Over - and after the visit by India they will finish the summer with three more matches at home against Australia.

ALSO READ: Virat Kohli stresses on intensity and clarity in New Zealand

"Probably right from the Sri Lanka series and England the focus has been on the World Cup," Taylor said. "It will be different conditions in Australia but getting those combinations, trying a few different guys out, obviously a few injuries as well which changes the dynamic of the side, but tests the depth out and gives guys opportunities which bodes well for competition for spots."

While the upcoming series on home soil are a key part of New Zealand's preparations for the tournament later this year - an event where they have never gone deeper than the semi-finals - Taylor believes there will have to be adjustments made for the conditions across the Tasman in October.

"It's the first time a T20 World Cup is there and you watch the Big Bash, there are big boundaries so you are going to have to skin the cat differently than how you play in New Zealand and other parts of the world," he said.

Kane Williamson, who missed the series against England with a hip problem, has returned to captain the team. New Zealand have won four out of the five T20Is they have played at home against India, including a 2-1 series win last year.

Taylor is also confident that New Zealand will be able to put up a better showing in the two Tests that conclude the tour than they managed in Australia, were they were beaten 3-0 with heavy margins in all the games.

"It didn't go as we would have liked, we were completely outplayed in all three facets of the game," he said. "Now we are back on home soil, India will be totally different opposition, No. 1 team in the world but in conditions we know."

India opener Shikhar Dhawan has been ruled out of the upcoming five-T20I series in New Zealand because of the shoulder injury he picked up during the third ODI against Australia in Bengaluru on Sunday. Dhawan did not travel with the India squad that left for Auckland on Monday and the selectors have not named a replacement yet.

Dhawan fell awkwardly on his left shoulder while diving to stop a drive from Aaron Finch at cover-point in the fifth over of Australia's innings in the series decider. He soon left the field clutching his shoulder, and didn't come out to bat in India's chase as he was rushed to a hospital during the match for X-rays. The Hindu reported that Dhawan had hurt the AC joint on the shoulder which is between the collar bone and shoulder blade. He was later spotted in the Indian dressing room with his arm in a sling as India won by seven wickets.

The T20I series begins on January 24, and will be followed by a series of three ODIs from February 5. In case Dhawan doesn't recover in time for those games, India have the option of picking up any of Sanju Samson, Mayank Agarwal and Prithvi Shaw, all of whom are already in New Zealand with the India A squad for a three-match one-day series that begins on Wednesday. Shubman Gill, who made his ODI debut in New Zealand last year, is also in in the country with the A squad.

Of the four, Samson is the only one with a T20I cap (two of them), and even played a game against Sri Lanka earlier this month before being left out of the New Zealand series because of the return of Rohit Sharma, who was rested earlier. That should make Samson the frontrunner as replacement, but Shaw could also be in contention after his 100-ball 150 in a 50-over warm-up game against a New Zealand XI on Sunday. Agarwal scored 32 and 8 in the two-warm-ups, Shaw played only the second one after recovering from an injury, while Gill scored 24 and 50, and Samson scored 4 in the first game.

Dhawan had injured his left leg before the West Indies T20I series last year, and Samson had replaced him at the time.

'It hurts' - Kagiso Rabada admits to letting his team down

Published in Cricket
Tuesday, 21 January 2020 01:40

Kagiso Rabada has admitted that he had let the team down - again - after copping a one-match ban which will force him to miss the final Test against England in Johannesburg with his team trailing 2-1. Two years ago, Rabada had escaped similar punishment, conceding afterwards that he needed to re-evaluate his on-field conduct.

Rabada was charged with a Level 1 offence for reacting aggressively after bowling Joe Root in Port Elizabeth. It earned him one demerit point, taking his total number of active points to four over a two-year period, resulting in the ban.

While expressing his surprise at the punishment, he refused to comment on whether it was disproportionate keeping in mind the offence. "It's something that I didn't expect, whether it was the right thing to ban me or the wrong thing, the reality is that I am banned," Rabada said in a press conference. "Obviously, it hurts, but I guess it gives me a chance to work on my game and gives me a chance to have a bit of a rest.

"I mean, it can't keep happening, because I am letting the team down and I am letting myself down. It just can't keep happening, that is why it hurts so much."

South Africa find themselves under immense pressure having slumped to heavy defeats in Cape Town and Port Elizabeth, after starting the series on a winning note in Centurion. They have now lost seven of their last eight Tests, four of them at home. Rabada conceded that the mood in the camp was downbeat, and stressed on the importance of getting into a good mental space before the decider.

"Not great (the mood), you know, we know haven't played well, it really does hurt us," he said. "Everyone in our change room, I am 100% sure, are strong characters, and we just need to bounce back. I think, mentally, we need to get into a clear space, so that when we get to Wanderers, we can really play without any second thoughts, and have a good idea about how we want to go about our situation."

Meanwhile, South Africa are back to full strength - minus Rabada - for the final Test, with Temba Bavuma, Andile Phehlukwayo, Keegan Petersen and Beuran Hendricks rejoining the squad after domestic duty. Bavuma, in particular, comes with form behind him, having struck 180 in his last first-class innings, which could augur well for a struggling batting line-up, should he make the XI.

"We were all together as a squad before the Centurion Test, there was a really good vibe," Rabada said. "Those guys are coming back now, there's going to be good vibes again. We are familiar with everyone that was here in the squad, and now when they come back it's going to be like we are reunited. Yeah, it'll be good to finish off with the whole squad being around and finishing off with a win."
