Sophie Devine named New Zealand captain

Published in Cricket
Wednesday, 15 January 2020 19:58

Allrounder Sophie Devine is set to lead New Zealand at the Women's T20 World Cup, having been named captain on Thursday. Devine takes over indefinitely from Amy Satterthwaite, who recently gave birth to her first child.

Devine's first assignment as full-time New Zealand captain will be the three ODIs and five T20Is against the visiting South Africa team, leading into the Women's T20 World Cup in Australia from February 21.

Medium pacer Jess Kerr, sister of allrounder Amelia Kerr, was also picked for the ODI series against South Africa. This was twenty-two-year-old Jess Kerr's maiden New Zealand call-up. She plays for Wellington in domestic cricket.

Devine's new assignment comes on the back of some red-hot form in her previous high-profile tournament, the Women's Big Bash League, where she was named Player of the Tournament. There, playing for Adelaide Strikers, she led the batting charts with 769 at 76.90 in 16 games, scoring at 130.33 runs per hundred balls inclusive of a whopping 29 sixes. She was also fourth on the bowling charts, with 19 wickets at 20.68, conceding just over a run a ball. In all she has played 102 ODIs and 83 T20Is for New Zealand, having debuted in October 2006.

Speaking about her new job, Devine said: "This is a team I'm deeply passionate about and to have the opportunity to help drive its future is a privilege.

"It's an exciting time for women's cricket in this country with the recently signed MOU with NZC, a fresh direction with our new coach Bob Carter, and two ICC World Cups [the upcoming T20 World Cup in Australia, and the one-day World Cup in New Zealand in 2021] on the horizon.

"We've got a good mix of talent and experience in the group and I'm looking forward to leaning on my fellow senior players to try and build on the good work done by Amy and Suzie Bates."

Satterthwaite had announced in August 2019 that she would be taking a break from cricket to have her child with her wife and team-mate Lea Tahuhu. Under the new Women's Master Agreement, Satterthwaite will continue to be contracted with New Zealand Cricket while she is on her break. She had said she would look to take up mentoring duties during this period, and looked forward to "working my way back with an eye on the 2021 ICC Women's World Cup held in New Zealand".

Jess Kerr credited sister Amelia for pushing her to get to the level she is at, and said she was excited to play alongside her for New Zealand. "To be selected in my first White Ferns squad is a huge honour and it's something I've been working towards for a while. To be picked in a squad alongside Melie [Amelia] is pretty special. She's inspired me a lot to get back into playing cricket competitively and push for higher honours.

"I've loved playing alongside her in the [Wellington] Blaze but to be representing our country together is even more special."

New Zealand's ODI squad for the South Africa series: Sophie Devine (capt), Suzie Bates, Bernadine Bezuidenhout, Lauren Down, Maddy Green, Holly Huddleston, Hayley Jensen, Leigh Kasperek, Amelia Kerr, Jess Kerr, Rosemary Mair, Katey Martin, Katie Perkins, Anna Peterson, Rachel Priest

S. Diego State to retire 1st jersey: Kawhi's No. 15

Published in Breaking News
Wednesday, 15 January 2020 19:44

SAN DIEGO -- Kawhi Leonard will become the first San Diego State basketball player to have his jersey retired when the No. 7 Aztecs honor him Feb. 1 during a game against Utah State.

Leonard helped lead the Aztecs to national prominence during his two seasons, including reaching their first Sweet 16 and finishing a program-best 34-3 in the 2010-11 season.

Leonard is expected to be present as his No. 15 jersey is hoisted to the rafters at Viejas Arena. His LA Clippers play a home game that afternoon. Steve Fisher, who turned around the program in his 18 seasons as coach, also will participate.

Leonard led the Aztecs to a 20-0 start in 2010-11. The current Aztecs are two victories shy of matching that start.

He is one of just three players in the program's 99-year history to average a double-double for his career, with 14.1 points and 10.2 rebounds.

Leonard is in his first season with the Clippers. He was named NBA Finals MVP after leading the Toronto Raptors to their first title last season. He was named Finals MVP after helping the San Antonio Spurs win the championship in 2014.

Edwards-Helaire among 7 from LSU entering draft

Published in Breaking News
Wednesday, 15 January 2020 19:33

The post-championship exodus at LSU Tigers hit another gear Wednesday as seven underclassmen declared for the NFL draft.

Gone next season will be the team's leading rusher (Clyde Edwards-Helaire), leading pass-catcher (Justin Jefferson), leading tackler (Jacob Phillips) and the nation's top defensive back, Jim Thorpe Award winner Grant Delpit.

The mass departure comes less than 24 hours after passing-game coordinator Joe Brady accepted the job as offensive coordinator for the Carolina Panthers.

Center Lloyd Cushenberry III, left tackle Saahdiq Charles and inside linebacker Patrick Queen announced their decisions to turn pro earlier Wednesday. ESPN's Mel Kiper ranks Cushenberry and Charles as top-10 prospects at their positions. Queen, who is not ranked among Kiper's top-10 prospects at linebacker, finished with 85 tackles, 12 tackles for loss and three sacks.

Kiper ranks Delpit as the top draft-eligible safety and No. 10 overall prospect for the 2020 draft. He finished this past season with 65 tackles, including two sacks and 4.5 tackles for loss, to go along with two interceptions, seven pass breakups, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.

Edwards-Helaire, Kiper's No. 8 running back, emerged as one of the best all-around backs in the country this season, rushing for 1,414 yards and 16 touchdowns to go along with 55 catches for 453 yards.

Whoever replaces Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Joe Burrow will also be without Jefferson, Kiper's No. 7 receiver, and his team-leading 111 catches, 18 of which resulted in touchdowns.

It wasn't all bad news, though, as safety JaCoby Stevens and nose tackle Tyler Shelvin announced they would be returning next season. Stevens ranked second on the team in tackles (92) and third in interceptions (three).

ESPN's Adam Rittenberg contributed to this report.

Conor predicts KO of Cerrone, but 'no bad blood'

Published in Breaking News
Wednesday, 15 January 2020 19:05

LAS VEGAS -- Conor McGregor walked out on stage, shook hands with UFC president Dana White and then turned to opponent Donald Cerrone. There was no pull-apart confrontation or bottles flying like previous promotional events. Instead, McGregor extended his hand and exchanged pleasantries with Cerrone.

That was how the rest of the UFC 246 prefight news conference went Wednesday at the Palms Resort Casino. There was very little trash talk, few barbs and more compliments than venom. At one point, McGregor complimented Cerrone's python-skin jacket. Cerrone called McGregor "f---ing great."

The environment and McGregor's demeanor were in stark contrast to previous McGregor news conferences. When McGregor went up against Khabib Nurmagomedov, the insults were very personal. Against Nate Diaz, McGregor was fiery and intense. Now, more than 15 months after falling to Nurmagomedov by submission and looking for his first UFC win since 2016, McGregor was almost demure.

"It's hard not to respect Donald right now at this stage," McGregor said. "He has my respect. And although there will be blood spilled on Jan. 18, it will not be bad blood. And for the Mystic Mac prediction, it will be a KO."

At a 2015 news conference, Cerrone and McGregor went at each other verbally even though they weren't slated to fight. Cerrone chided McGregor for wanting to move up to his lightweight division. At the time, McGregor was competing at featherweight. Saturday's fight is at welterweight -- 15 pounds heavier than lightweight. Cerrone said he had changed his tune on McGregor.

"He did everything he said he was gonna do, didn't he?" Cerrone said. "Any feelings? Yeah, he's f---ing great man and I'm honored to share the thing with him."

Cerrone even came to McGregor's defense at one point in the news conference. A reporter asked McGregor about the New York Times report that he is being investigated for two alleged sexual assaults in his home country of Ireland.

"We're here to talk about a fight, nothing he does outside of fighting," Cerrone said.

Fans booed the reporter who asked McGregor about the investigations, and White further shut down the question saying McGregor "answered these questions yesterday on ESPN." White said the allegations did not lead to any concern that McGregor vs. Cerrone would be in peril.

Also at the event, McGregor said he could fight again soon if things go well enough against Cerrone. "The Notorious" said he could potentially return March 7 at UFC 248 in Las Vegas, a card that does not currently have a main event. That would be the quickest turnaround of his UFC career.

"Yes," McGregor said after being asked about UFC 248. "God willing, we come out safe from this bout here Saturday night. Most certainly, March would be well attainable."

When asked about that, White said "anything is possible" and it would be determined following the fight with Cerrone on Saturday.

Who would be a potential UFC 248 opponent? A composed McGregor didn't seem too concerned.

"Line them f---in' up," he said. "I couldn't care. Any weight, any division. Any anything. I am in prime condition and ready to go."

Nuggets G Murray injures ankle vs. Hornets

Published in Basketball
Wednesday, 15 January 2020 20:17

Denver Nuggets guard Jamal Murray was helped off the floor by teammates and taken for X-rays on his left ankle after an awkward fall Wednesday night in Denver's home game against Charlotte. He didn't return to the Nuggets' 100-86 win.

Murray was defending a 3-point attempt from Hornets guard Terry Rozier when he rolled his ankle near the Hornets bench with 1:32 left in the second quarter.

Murray had five points and two steals before the injury. He is averaging 17.9 points, 4.2 rebounds and 4.7 assists this season.

She has been retired for more than seven years, has a hectic life as a mum of three and is not as "fit and fast" as she used to be, but Kim Clijsters believes she will still be competitive on her return to tennis.

The former world number one, 36, is making her comeback in March after a knee injury put the brakes on plans to return at next week's Australian Open.

In a wide-ranging interview with BBC Sport, she explains what motivated her to take to the court once again, which players she is looking forward to facing and what she makes of the air quality issues the players are facing at the Australian Open.

She says a lot has changed while she has been away - but can she still do the splits?

'I would be vocal' on air quality issue

The media day at her academy in her hometown of Bree in Belgium was supposed to be all about the four-time Grand Slam champion's much-anticipated return to tennis, but Clijsters inevitably found herself being asked about the air quality issues in Melbourne, where qualifying has been delayed because of poor air quality due to bushfires and players have had breathing problems.

Clijsters says if she was at the Australian Open she would be "vocal" in getting organisers to explain how they are going to deal with the issue when the main draw starts on Monday.

"If it's not possible to play in then what's the point?" she said.

"If you can't play and bring good tennis and be fit enough to play two hours, or even the guys 4-5 hours in this environment. You can't avoid or ignore it.

"They have delayed matches but it's not going to solve the air quality. On the centre and show courts there is not an issue - they can close the roof and they can have the ventilation on but on the outside courts… you can't play a whole event just on a few show courts that have a roof.

"If I would have been there I think I would have been very vocal and at least talk to the board and the tournament directors to try to think about solutions."

She said some of the players from her academy are involved in the qualifying event and have been talking about how hard it has been.

They feel the struggles at night, the coughing," Clijsters said. "It's a tough situation to be in. It's something that's out of anyone's control. It's important that players stay healthy."

She praised player efforts to raise money for the relief fund to help the crisis, in which at least 28 people have died and an estimated 10 million hectares (100,000 sq km) of land has burned since 1 July.

"Tennis is a sport that has always come together very well to try and make money for [disasters]," said Clijsters, speaking hours after tennis greats Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal were among a number of players to feature in a charity match for the bushfire appeal.

"Everybody cares about it, they all love the Australian Open, we just have to make sure that the people stay safe and healthy."

What made Clijsters come out of retirement (again!)?

Clijsters, who first retired in 2007 at the age of 23 to start a family, hung up her racquet for a second time in 2012 and has since thrown herself into being a busy mum as well as working as a TV pundit and playing at various Legends events.

But while she commentated on players like Serena Williams, who is still winning titles at the age of 38, she had a nagging feeling that she might not quite be done.

"Whenever I went to a couple of tournaments, even if I was doing commentating or if I was playing some legends, at the back of my mind at times I still felt I could still be a player - I'm not saying win Grand Slams, but be a player and not be among the legends or not doing commentary - still being competitive," she said.

"Then I would come home and be in craziness of the hectic life with kids and be like 'yeah, it's not possible'."

That was until her youngest son started school.

"I thought this will maybe give me some time and maybe I should just see how far my body can go and just go from there," she said.

"Maybe this can lead to coming back or playing a few tournaments a year, see how I will react. It very easily could have gone the other way."

The other key element was the rule that as a former world number one, Clijsters is eligible for unlimited wildcards at WTA tournaments. And there is no prescribed number of events that she has to play at.

"If they told me I had to play 16 tournaments a year and I have to go here, here and here, I would have said it was impossible to combine it but in this situation I can combine it," she said.

She is due to make her comeback in March and has wildcards for the events in Monterrey, Indian Wells, and Charleston.

Asked if anyone had tried to talk her out of returning, she laughed: "At least not to my face, behind my back maybe a little bit."

How will she fare against the new generation?

Clijsters, who won 41 WTA titles and spent 20 weeks as world number one, has not set herself - publicly - any goals for her comeback in terms of rankings or results.

But she is looking forward to mixing with a new generation of players, who she has been observing from afar.

"Simona Halep is not a young player but is someone I've never played against - the way she played against Serena [Williams] in that Wimbledon final [last year] was incredible to watch," she said.

"Bianca Andreescu - what she did at the US Open [when she beat Williams in the 2019 final]. Naomi Osaka is a player I enjoy watching - not just on the court but her press conferences. [American 15-year-old] Coco Gauff is definitely a girl I have my eyes on, especially in the big events. Fun girls, interesting."

It is not just the players who have changed since she played her last competitive match at the 2012 US Open.

"There is more and more science behind things these days, for my trainer and my osteopath - they also look at treatments differently. There is the cold therapies, so many new approaches to help," she said.

"I've been trying to go more - not fully vegan - but trying to be more healthy. You look at food that triggers inflammation differently. [But] there are things that haven't changed - I was a big believer in deep tissue massage back in the day - and I still do that."

Can she still do the splits?

Clijsters was always well known for her agility on court - often doing the splits when trying to get to shots. Unsurprising, perhaps, given that her mother was a gymnast.

And it sounds like we can expect to see some more.

"A few weeks ago when I was on training camp I did [the splits] out of the blue. Everybody on the sideline stopped and was kind of like 'why did you do that?', I was like 'sorry, I don't know, how it happened'," she smiled.

"I should be able to, just make sure I'm fit enough to get back up again with no pulled muscles."

Despite her return already being postponed because of a knee injury, she has not been put off by the physical pressures.

"The knee was an out-of-the-blue bad luck thing. If you put in the time, and you look at everything around you - the diet, the sleep, then you are capable of doing a lot of things," she said.

"If I do all that - I'm not saying I'm going to be as fit and as fast and do the splits like I used to do - I do think I'm capable of getting to a certain level that I feel happy with. It doesn't have to be a contender for a Grand Slam but to put myself for a level where I'm happy - that's the goal."

But before all that, though, she tells us she needs to take her daughter to basketball practice.

"But I like that, it's my life."

Scrum-half Rhys Webb has been warned he faces a battle to regain his number nine jersey after being recalled to the Wales Six Nations squad.

Webb has been named in Wayne Pivac's 38-man squad after becoming eligible for Wales again.

The 31-year-old last played for Wales against South Africa in December 2017 and Pivac says he faces competition from Gareth Davies and Tomos Williams.

"He needs to come in and prove himself again," said Pivac.

Webb had been ineligible for Wales since the WRU brought in a selection policy in October 2017 that meant players would not be picked if they had won fewer than 60 caps and opted to move away from Wales.

The British and Irish Lions scrum-half had announced he was signing for Toulon from Ospreys and missed the 2019 World Cup in Japan.

Webb is eligible to play for Wales in the 2020 Six Nations after announcing he will return to Ospreys from Toulon who agreed to Webb's early release from his contract for family reasons.

The Welsh Rugby Union confirmed Webb was available for immediate selection after being given a "six-month dispensation".

This had caused concern from the French side with Toulon owner Bernard Lemairtre suggesting Webb might have played the last game for the club.

Pivac is concerned with how Webb performs with Wales as he bids to try and oust Williams and Davies as well as helping his scrum-half rivals.

"We know what he's done in the past," said Pivac.

"He's been a British and Irish Lion, is a very capable player, has a lot of experience.

"Bringing him back in is an opportunity for him but it's not an automatic selection by any means. He knows that.

"What it does do is that it is great for Tomos Williams - another experienced player to learn from.

"He is still developing his game. Rhys can play a part and create even more competition than there was."

Pivac also outlined why he selected Owen Williams as one of his thee fly-halves with the Gloucester 10 chosen alongside Dan Biggar and Jarrod Evans.

Williams provides an option at centre compared to Dragons half-back Sam Davies who is more a specialist 10.

"We know he can do both play and he has done it against the All Blacks at 12," said Pivac.

"We have young Jarrod (Evans) there who is battling a bit of a head knock, so Owen is there to cover 10 and if we need to 12."

'Ridiculous' Saracens schedule annoys Scotland boss Townsend

Published in Rugby
Wednesday, 15 January 2020 14:01

Scotland head coach Gregor Townsend describes Saracens' schedule as "ridiculous" and says it has affected his Six Nations squad selection.

The English champions play Harlequins six days before Scotland's tournament opener against Ireland on 1 February.

Townsend has chosen Saracens' Sean Maitland but Duncan Taylor misses out.

"We're training five sessions from Monday 20 January to Monday 27 and those Saracens players can only make one of those sessions," Townsend said.

"It's not Duncan's fault or Sean's fault or Saracens' fault. But to have a fixture the Sunday before a Six Nations - none of the England players will be playing, they're away in a camp in Portugal the whole week - does make it really difficult for us to prepare the team as best we can."

Scotland players convene in Edinburgh on Sunday before flying to Spain for a warm-weather camp seven days later.

Under World Rugby regulations, players must be released from club duty five clear days before the start of the Six Nations.

A deal between England's Rugby Football Union and top-flight clubs allows Eddie Jones access to his Test players outside of designated windows.

Eight of Townsend's 38-man squad, including new captain Stuart Hogg, play in the English Premiership.

Gloucester lock Alex Craig and centre Chris Harris, London Irish prop Allan Dell, Worcester Warriors back-row Cornell du Preez, Northampton Saints centre Rory Hutchinson, Sale Sharks back Bryon McGuigan and Saracens' Maitland all ply their trade south of the border.

Townsend has selected experienced wing Maitland, but says the club's fixture list dented 30-year-old centre Taylor's hopes of reclaiming his berth.

"We rate Duncan very highly," Townsend added. "But unfortunately, Saracens play Sunday-Sunday the next week which to me is ridiculous, that a Premiership have got a game six days before we play Ireland.

"Duncan's been unlucky in that regard. The fact we know he's only going to make one of those five sessions means we've not included him this time."

Sponsor Pulls Faccinto From 34th Chili Bowl

Published in Racing
Wednesday, 15 January 2020 14:42

TULSA, Okla. – The No. 08 Tulsa Sod & Mulch Spike-Toyota of Michael Faccinto has been withdrawn from the 34th annual Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Nationals after a third-place finish in his preliminary feature.

The decision to withdraw Faccinto was made following his post-race interview Tuesday night, where he made a derogatory comment on the Racinboys pay-per-view broadcast.

Faccinto’s primary sponsor for the Chili Bowl Nationals, Tulsa Sod & Mulch, issued a statement on social media regarding the decision to withdraw him Wednesday morning.

“Tulsa Sod & Mulch is more than a sod and landscape business. It’s a company that supports the local racing community every chance it gets,” said James Moran, president for Tulsa Sod & Mulch. “This year we had the honor to team up with Dave Mac Motorsports at the 34th annual Chili Bowl. As a team, we have made the decision to pull the Tulsa Sod & Mulch No. 08 entry of Michael Faccinto for the remainder of the Chili Bowl.

“We are truly sorry for anyone who was offended by a comment made following the final race on Tuesdays night’s event card.”

Faccinto, who was competing in his seventh Chili Bowl Nationals, was in line for a front-row starting spot in one of Saturday’s B-mains, but will now have to watch the festivities from the sidelines.

The 29-year-old from Hanford, Calif., accepted full responsibility for his actions when SPEED SPORT spoke to him on Wednesday afternoon.

“First off, I again want to apologize,” said Faccinto, who issued an initial apology on social media late Tuesday night. “That’s something that should never come out of my mouth, at all. I feel bad for the Dave Mac team and I feel bad for Tulsa Sod & Mulch, because those are two great brands and two great companies. Dave (McIntosh) fields great race cars and I’m just disappointed at what happened. It should never have happened.

“This was easily my best opportunity to do well in the main event on Saturday, but you have to learn from your mistakes and just keep digging and moving forward. That’s what I plan on doing.”

“We’re happy to announce that Aaron Telitz will, once again, be part of AIM Vasser Sullivan team for the 2020 Rolex 24 at Daytona,” said Jimmy Vasser, co-owner of AIM Vasser Sullivan. “Aaron did a good job going from open wheel cars to sports cars last year. He was one of the guys that helped us finish second in our Rolex 24 debut and hopefully we can take to the next level this year.”

AIM Vasser Sullivan will campaign two Lexus RC F GT3s at the Rolex 24 at Daytona in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship GTD class.

The No. 12 Lexus RC F GT3 will be manned by Townsend Bell, Frankie Montecalvo, Shane van Gisbergen and Telitz, while the No. 14 Lexus RC F GT3 will be campaigned by Jack Hawksworth, Parker Chase, Kyle Busch and Michael De Quesada.

Telitz, a native of Wisconsin, drove for AVS last year in all four endurance races helping the team to a second-place finish in its Rolex 24 debut.

“Coming from open wheel racing to sports cars last year I didn’t know what to expect,” said Telitz. “However, I had a great time working with all my teammates and to finish second in our first Rolex 24 was awesome. I’m honored that Jimmy Vasser, Sulli and Andrew Bordin made it possible for me to come back for a second time. I think we have a great driver line up with Townsend (Bell), Frankie (Montecalvo) and Shane (Van Gisbergen) and I am looking forward to, hopefully, having another good race in this year’s Rolex 24.”
