Daunting task ahead but Tin-Tin Ho ready

Published in Table Tennis
Monday, 13 January 2020 08:30

Tin-Tin Ho is 21 years old, the youngest member of the team, Maria Tsaptsinos is 22 years of age; one year older, Charlotte Carey is the senior member.

Only nine places available for Tokyo 2020, seeded no.25 amongst an entry of 30 teams, it is a quite dauting task for the young British outfit; a fact of which Tin-Tin Ho, currently studying at Nottingham University, is well aware.

“I think it will be a very tough competition with the highest standards but if we all play to the best we can; then who knows what happen, I think we can have a chance.

My ultimate goal would be to qualify for the Olympics; win the National Championships and to really improve my level on the international scene.

It is athletes’ dreams when they were young, including mine to compete at the Olympic Games. I narrowly missed out on the Youth Olympic Games, which was also a dream of mine, which makes competing at the Olympics an even larger dream.

I have been preparing at my club in Linz, Austria. I have been working on lots of match play which involved changing the type of training I would do, which I implemented last year in Nottingham. I feel like all the experiences in the past and my training has prepared me well for the tournament. I believe the team feels the same.

Table tennis has given me the discipline, perseverance and confidence in life which I otherwise may not have developed. It has served me well in other areas of my life. Of course I have made some of my best friends through table tennis. It has helped me become aware of some things in the World which I experienced through travelling.

As my dad was the reason why I began table tennis, along with my brother, Ping, it has also given something in terms of our family bonding.”

I'm not ready for Ireland captaincy - Henderson

Published in Rugby
Monday, 13 January 2020 07:42

Ulster second row Iain Henderson has admitted that the Ireland captaincy is "a step I'm not ready for yet".

The 27-year-old was named as his province's new skipper last summer following the retirement of Rory Best.

Ireland head coach Andy Farrell is yet to name his captain with the Six Nations less than three weeks away.

"Looking at the other candidates I would be confident that they would be able to do a better job than me at this moment in time," said Henderson.

Speaking on BBC Radio Ulster's Sportsound Extra Time, Henderson revealed that although keen to be a leader within the squad he was not harbouring any ambition of becoming captain.

"Anyone who gets the opportunity to lead a team and play for their country would jump at that opportunity," he said.

"Whether it's achievable or not I suppose is a different matter.

"There's obviously such a strength in depth throughout Ireland now with Leinster producing so many good players and leaders - same with Munster."

Johnny Sexton and Peter O'Mahony, both captains of their provinces, are the most obvious candidates to assume the role having previously led the side in Best's absence.

Lock James Ryan, 23, has been touted as a future Ireland skipper while Rhys Ruddock has amassed plenty of leadership experience with Leinster.

Henderson started four of Ireland's five matches at last year's World Cup in Japan. Despite 53 international caps, he does not feel best suited to the role.

"The leaders that are in the Ireland squad, similar to myself, have played with unbelievable captains in their time and similarly will have learned from a lot of them," he said.

"I have every faith in Andy Farrell to make the right decision and I know the right decision will be somebody who we're definitely able to get behind and be able to support.

"Hopefully they will feel the leadership from the rest of the squad as I feel from the squad at Ulster."

'Like going into a new school year with a different teacher'

The first task facing Farrell is to reinvigorate an Irish side that failed to perform in Japan, falling at the quarter-finals stage for the seventh time.

Ireland begin their Six Nations campaign with home games against Scotland and Wales before travelling to take on England at Twickenham.

Farrell is a familiar face to the squad having served as defence coach from 2016 until the departure of Joe Schmidt after Ireland's World Cup exit.

"There was a different feeling in the squad," said Henderson of Farrell's pre-Christmas 'stocktake' to which 45 players were invited.

"One way you could liken it is to going into school to start a new year but with a different teacher.

"I have no doubt in my mind that things will change.

"I think if you look at the performances of the provinces and the players that are in there, the opportunities for the coaching staff at Ireland to produce a team capable of winning the Six Nations is not unrealistic."

Hear the full interview with Ulster captain Iain Henderson on Sportsound Extra Time from 18:05 GMT on Monday.

Wales women's coach Phillips remains absent for Six Nations

Published in Rugby
Monday, 13 January 2020 04:27

Coach Rowland Phillips remains absent from Wales women's rugby squad as they prepare for the Six Nations.

Phillips missed all five autumn matches in 2019 when the Welsh Rugby Union announced he was "taking time away."

In his continued - and unexplained - absence Chris Horsman, Geraint Lewis and Gareth Wyatt have selected a squad of 33 for the upcoming campaign.

Phillips' daughter Carys Phillips and Sioned Harries, who each have over 50 caps, are both omitted from the squad.

Siwan Lillicrap, who succeeded Carys Phillips as captain in the autumn, continues as skipper.

The squad contains one uncapped player, Ospreys prop Ruth Lewis, and 11 players who made their Wales debuts during the autumn series.

Jasmine Joyce, Hannah Jones and Alisha Butchers return to the squad along with Hannah Bluck and Lleucu George.

Horsman says the trio of coaches are in charge for this tournament only.

"It is a fantastic opportunity," said the former Wales prop.

"It is my first senior coaching role and I am dead excited about it.

"I have seen the growth in this group and they are some of the most professional players I have worked with."

Horsman explained Carys Phillips and Harries have been left out of the squad because Wales are looking towards the 2021 World Cup and insisted the door was not closed for either.

"It is all about 2021," said Horsman.

"It is not just myself picking the squad with Geraint. It is the whole department sitting around and saying what is the best way to drive women's rugby forward.

"We are looking to build strength in depth and competition for the group.

"We need flexibility in the group and we have to look at a wider pool of players and get an understanding of where we are.

"We have looked at the make-up of the group and where we are going. We have made a selection based on what we feel we need to look at and achieve with the objective of 2021.

"We still have another autumn campaign and Six Nations so looking at all those touch points, the selections can change varying on the objective.

"Players will more than likely leave the squad and come back in as in any national squad. We are looking at what we want in this moment of time and rewarding what we have."

Lillicrap says she has fulfilled a childhood dream.

"It's such a privilege and honour to be handed the role of Six Nations captain," said Lillicrap.

"It's literally what my childhood dreams were made of and I hope I can do the shirt, the players, my family and the coaches proud."

Former England Sevens captain Ollie Phillips has also been appointed to lead the Wales Women Sevens programme.

Forwards: Alisha Butchers, Alex Callender, Gwen Crabb, Georgia Evans, Abbie Fleming, Cerys Hale, Lleucu George, Cara Hope, Natalia John, Manon Johnes, Kelsey Jones, Molly Kelly, Sarah Lawrence, Bethan Lewis, Siwan Lillicrap, Robyn Lock, Gwenllian Pyrs

Backs: Keira Bevan, Hannah Bluck, Hannah Jones, Jasmine Joyce, Courtney Keight, Kerin Lake, Caitlin Lewis, Ffion Lewis, Lisa Neumann, Kayleigh Powell, Paige Randall, Lauren Smyth, Elinor Snowsill, Niamh Terry, Megan Webb, Robyn Wilkins

Front Row Starts Truck Team, Todd Gilliland To Drive

Published in Racing
Monday, 13 January 2020 07:53

MOORESVILLE, N.C. – Front Row Motorsports announced Monday that the team would expand operations to the NASCAR Gander RV and Outdoors Truck Series through an alliance with DGR-Crosley.

Nineteen-year-old Todd Gilliland is set to drive the team’s No. 38 Ford F-150 in a full-time effort.

Gilliland, a third-generation NASCAR driver, will look to deliver a successful debut season for the team as he takes on his third full-time year in the Truck Series. In 48 starts, he has one win, 12 top-five, and 26 top-10 finishes.

In his teenage years, Gilliland spent time developing in NASCAR’s regional series where he achieved many accomplishments in a short amount of time. After winning in his debut ARCA Menards Series West race as a 15-year-old, the North Carolina native went on to win back-to-back championships and has collected 20 ARCA Menards Series East and West wins in 53 races. Gilliland also has two ARCA Menards Series National victories in nine attempts.

“I’m really looking forward to racing an F-150 in the Truck Series this year with Front Row Motorsports as part of the Ford family,” said Gilliland. “I’ve been around Bob Jenkins and the whole Front Row crew for a long time growing up with my dad racing for them. The talent that they’ve brought in for my program is really exciting. I know or have worked with almost every person that’s on my team this year at some point in my career. That helps tremendously in building relationships and trust with each other.”

The No. 38 Ford that Gilliland will pilot has significant meaning to his family. Gilliland spent most of his childhood watching his father, David Gilliland, race that number in NASCAR’s premier Cup Series driving for FRM and Ford Performance, but the story doesn’t end there. David’s father, Butch Gilliland, also raced the No. 38 winning a Championship in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West in 1997; three years before Gilliland was born.

“Car numbers are important to a driver because they are essentially your identity when you’re on track. It’s cool to think about a Gilliland being back in the No. 38, and I’m really proud to be able to drive the same number that my dad and grandpa did.”

“We’re all very excited for this expansion,” said FRM owner Bob Jenkins. “I’ve watched Todd grow up in this sport and have seen the talent he brings firsthand. Not only does he come from a racing family, but he’s got the natural ability of a winning driver. I’m confident that having him drive in our debut season will be a great success.”

Gilliland will have former NASCAR Cup Series engineer Jon Leonard as his crew chief throughout the duration of the season. Leonard brings significant knowledge and experience to the newly formed team. He served as an interim crew chief for Levine Family Racing for several months before moving back into an engineering role at Richard Childress Racing last season. Gilliland will have veteran NASCAR Cup Series spotter Coleman Pressley guiding him from the spotter stand.

Serradori Nabs First Dakar Stage Victory

Published in Racing
Monday, 13 January 2020 08:28

HARADH, Saudi Arabia – Mathieu Serradori laid claim to his first Dakar Rally stage victory on Monday.

Driving the South African-built Century CR6 buggy, Serradori won the 474 kilometer stage by besting two-time Formula One champion Fernando Alonso by a little more than four minutes.

“I’m absolutely delighted. It’s a wonderful story,” said Serradori. “Yesterday’s stage was very complicated – we made a mistake and paid a heavy price. This morning, we pulled our socks up and left everyone behind us.”

The runner-up stage finish for Alonso was his best showing to date during his inaugural Dakar Rally. Orlando Terranova ended the stage in third, more than six minutes behind Serradori.

In the overall rankings, X-Raid driver Carlos Sainz continues to lead the car division by nearly seven minutes over Toyota Gazoo Racing’s Nasser Al-Attiyah.

In the truck division, Kamaz driver Andrey Karginov earned his third-straight stage victory to edge even closer to locking up his second Dakar Rally victory. He now leads the truck class standings by more than 27 minutes.

The SxS class stage was won by Reinaldo Varela, but behind him stage runner-up Francisco Lopez Contardo made up 16 minutes on class leader Casey Currie when Currie was briefly sidelined by a broken axle.

Entering the day more than 30 minutes behind Currie, Contardo is now less than 16 minutes behind Currie.

The motorcycle and quad divisions were given Monday off after the death of motorcycle competitor Paulo Goncalves on Sunday.

Joey Saldana Acquires John Godfrey’s Oil Tank Business

Published in Racing
Monday, 13 January 2020 08:30

BROWNSBURG, Ind. — Veteran sprint car racer Joey Saldana is getting into the oil tank business.

Saldana, a winner of 105 World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series races, has acquired Godfrey Autosport’s Spike Oil Tank division from John Godfrey. The business will be rebranded under the Saldana Racing banner.

“We’ve been working on it the last two months,” Saldana told SPEED SPORT by phone on Monday morning. “We finally got her done last week to where we can finally say it’s mine and, hopefully, we can make it run.”

The decision for Saldana to acquire Godfrey’s oil tank business comes as the 47-year-old racer winds down his driving career. After only competing in 15 events last season, Saldana said he was looking for a way to remain involved in the racing industry.

“It just seems like 2016 through the last few years it’s just been tough to find a secure ride at a high level,” Saldana said. “I just kind of felt like I’d worked hard to get to that point, running with the Outlaws and that’s really where my heart was and what I want to do. But if I can’t do it the right way…it takes a lot of time and energy and you’ve got to be away from your family a lot. It’s tough. It’s a huge commitment.

“I love racing. It’s all I’ve ever done. My dad raced. I just wanted to be somewhat involved in racing and not be totally out of it. I can’t handle not being a part of racing in some capacity.”

Saldana is no stranger to the parts business. In the past he’s worked for men like Godfrey, Lee Osborne and Donnie Ray Everett, so acquiring Godfrey’s oil tank business seemed like a logical next step for Saldana.

“I kind of talked to John Godfrey about it. He’s talking about retiring. I told him where I was and what I wanted to do and it was just a good fit for both of us,” Saldana said.

Saldana’s list of clients for his new oil tank business is an impressive one. Among them are Spike Chassis, Tony Stewart Racing, Speedway Engine Development, Fisher Racing Engines, HP Engines and Ostrich Engines, to name a few.

“Numerous big-time engine builders were behind me if I did it (bought the business),” Saldana said. “I just felt like it was a good time. The timing was right and having John in your corner, who has already been doing this for a while, and hoping my name can sell some tanks…it’s like well, let’s see if it’ll work.”

So does all of this mean that Saldana, one of the top sprint car competitors in the United States for the last 15 years, is hanging up his helmet? Saldana admits he doesn’t have the answer to that question.

“Paul McMahan asked me that last night,” Saldana said with a laugh. “We got the press release from Brett Anderson and I sent it over to Paul to see what he thought. He said, ‘It’s great, I love it, but do you want people to get the impression that you’re not racing anymore?’ You know, that was a good question he asked me because I love racing and I want to race, but I only ran 15 times last year. I kind of feel like if it’s no racing or 15 races, it’s almost the same thing when you’re accustomed to racing 75 to 100 times a year.

“I think that’s why I want to get into this, just because I can see my future in running with the World of Outlaws is slim to none,” Saldana continued. “It’s getting harder and harder to find a good ride. It’s hard, it’s expensive. The younger guys are coming up. I did my thing when I had my opportunities.

“If I get the opportunity to run a good car like I did last year at the Nationals, I might do something like that. I don’t want to say I’m retiring because man, that’s so definite. I don’t want to be someone that says, ‘Hey, I’m done,’ and then I come back and race again. As of right now, if I don’t race again I don’t race again. I’m happy with what I’ve done and where I’m at.”

Buffalo to remain combine host through 2022

Published in Hockey
Monday, 13 January 2020 08:08

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The NHL's top prospects will continue making their pre-draft stops in Buffalo for at least another three years.

The league on Monday announced an extension of its agreement to hold its annual scouting combine in Buffalo at the Sabres' downtown practice facility, LECOM Harborcenter, through 2022. The announcement coincided with NHL Central Scouting releasing its midseason rankings of draft-eligible prospects.

Buffalo has hosted the combine since 2015, after the weeklong event spent the previous 20-plus years being held at various locations around Toronto.

"I'm very excited about it," said Kevyn Adams, former NHL player and Sabres senior vice president of business administration. "It's an incredible opportunity for us as an organization and city to host such a great event for the last number of years, and now that it's moving forward."

Each year, Central Scouting invites more than 100 of its top-ranked prospects to the combine, where they undergo physical and medical testing and meet with team executives. It's considered the final major step in their pre-draft process and traditionally is held about three weeks before the draft.

The move from Toronto was prompted by the construction of the Sabres' $200 million practice complex, which includes two rinks, a hotel, a restaurant and a workout facility, all connected to the team's arena.

Although the combine does not include on-ice testing, the floor of Harborcenter's main rink provides plenty of room for prospect testing to be conducted while also allowing team executives to watch from the stands.

Those are considered upgrades from when the combine took place inside carpeted convention centers and hotel ballrooms in suburban Toronto.

In Buffalo, teams also have the advantage of going across the street to hold in-person meetings with prospects in arena suites. That's a switch from Toronto, where prospects had to be shuttled to various hotels, depending on where each team was based.

"It just seems to be a pretty good fit, and I do think the three-year term is indicative of that," Adams said. "In Toronto, it was spread out a little bit and just the logistics of it. When the players and team management get here, it's all here."

Central Scouting director Dan Marr referred to the setup in Buffalo as ideal and featuring a venue that meets all needs.

"The NHL's annual scouting combine is one of the most valuable experiences in a young prospects' draft year, and we are thrilled to continue utilizing the Sabres' best-in-class facilities," Marr said.

This year's combine was already on the NHL calendar and is scheduled to take place June 1-6.

The combine is also a boon to Buffalo by annually attracting some 250 NHL executives, scouts and media to the city and its redeveloped waterfront.

"This is exciting news for the Sabres, downtown Buffalo and our great hockey fans in the region," Mayor Byron Brown said. "The three-year extension is the hat trick of extensions and will allow so many visitors during the NHL combine to experience our fabulous Canalside area, waterfront development and downtown development for years to come."
