Orioles reach deal with SS Iglesias, source says

Published in Baseball
Monday, 06 January 2020 12:35

Shortstop Jose Iglesias and the Baltimore Orioles have agreed to a one-year, $3 million contract, a source confirmed to ESPN.

The deal has a team option for the 2021 season, the source said.

The news was first reported by MLB.com.

Iglesias, 30, became a free agent when the Cincinnati Reds didn't tender him a contract in December.

He set career highs with 11 home runs and 59 RBIs this past season and also hit .288, starting 144 games at shortstop with a .980 fielding percentage and appearing in 146 games overall.

He was an All-Star with the Detroit Tigers in 2015 and is a career .273 hitter with 32 home runs and 247 RBIs.

Freddy Galvis will be the Reds' starting shortstop in 2020 after the Reds picked up Galvis' $5.5 million option in November. Galvis, acquired in a trade with the Blue Jays last season, set career highs with 23 home runs and 70 RBIs last season.

ESPN's Jeff Passan contributed to this report.

Australian Open: Air quality being monitored - organisers

Published in Tennis
Monday, 06 January 2020 07:11

Australian Open matches could be suspended if air quality is too bad, organisers said after Melbourne reached "very unhealthy" levels amid bushfires.

Fires in Australia have killed at least 24 people since September and millions of hectares of land have been scorched.

"Assessing the likelihood of smoke-induced interruptions is a bit like how we treat heat and rain," tournament director Craig Tiley said.

"The health of players, fans and staff is a priority at all times."

Visibility in Melbourne, which hosts the opening Grand Slam of the year this month, is less than 1km (0.62 miles) in some parts of the city and surrounding areas, according to Victoria's Bureau of Meteorology.

The air quality index in the city reached 213 on Monday, with a reading above 200 considered "very unhealthy".

Qualifying for the Australian Open begins on Tuesday, 14 January, with the main draw starting on 20 January.

"We have experts who analyse all available live data as specific to our sites as possible and consult regularly with tournament officials and, in the case of heat and smoke, medical experts," Tiley added.

"We have access to real-time monitoring of air quality at all of our venues and are working closely with medical personnel and local experts onsite to ensure we have the best possible information available to make any decisions regarding whether play should be halted at any point."

There have been no smoke-related interruptions so far at the ATP Cup, which is taking place in Sydney, Brisbane and Perth, but this week's Canberra challenger event was relocated more than 450km away to Bendigo and some football and basketball matches have been cancelled.

Nick Kyrgios, Novak Djokovic and Ashleigh Barty have been among the tennis players who have pledged financial support to the relief fund.

Australian Open organisers also announced plans to raise money, including staging an "AO Rally for Relief" with a group of leading players and a music event.

"The inordinate loss of people, wildlife, stock, homes, schools and businesses is going to require an extraordinarily widespread effort to get these families and communities back on their feet," Tiley said. "Our aim is for tennis to play a significant role where we can to help that recovery."

Sam Todd powers through to BJO title

Sam Todd celebrates his under-17 title win in Birmingham

‘I played well and didn’t let him in’
By ELIZABETH BOTCHERBY – Squash Mad Correspondent

Yorkshire squash sensation Sam Todd was crowned Dunlop British Junior Open champion (BJO) for the third time as he cruised to victory in the boys’ under 17s at the University of Birmingham Sport & Fitness today.

His win represents England’s first victory in the boys’ under 17s since 2000, when fellow Yorkshireman and Pontefract team-mate – and former World no.1 – James Willstrop claimed the world’s most prestigious junior squash title.

A former champion in the under 13s (2016) and under 15s (2018), the 16-year-old controlled the match from the beginning and swiftly dispatched Malaysia’s [5/8] Ishant Shah in 26 minutes to secure the title, triumphing 11-4, 11-2, 11-2.

“I’m extremely happy,” Todd said after the match. “It’s great to get my third British Junior Open title.”

The 2019 British National champion, who didn’t drop a game in the tournament was too clinical for Shah, toying with his opponent throughout the long rallies before delivering the killer blow.

Sam Todd follows through on a backhand drive

Playing with maturity and professionalism, Todd quietly executed his game plan before offering the cameras a fist pump at the end of the match, the emotion of the moment finally setting in.

Assessing his performance, Todd said: “I was very happy with the way I played. I didn’t let him get in the match and I thought I was very solid throughout. Overall, I’m just very happy.”

Today’s Dunlop British Junior Open final was Todd’s fourth in five years, and the Pontefract-native was pleased to capture the under 17s title at the second time of asking, having lost in five games to Egyptian top seed Yehia Elnawasany last year.

He said: “This time I was the number one seed so I had more pressure on me than last time and I had to make sure that I was very focused for the match.

“I didn’t let it get tense, I had a good lead throughout and did what I needed to do today.”

Nour El Sherbini back in her favourite city

Nour El Sherbini in action against Raneem El Sherbini at last year’s Tournament of Champions final at Grand Central Terminal in New York

‘My injury hasn’t fully healed but I’m trying to maintain my form’
By SEAN REUTHE – Squash Mad Correspondent

Four-time World Champion Nour El Sherbini will return to her favourite city when the Egyptian competes for the J.P. Morgan Tournament of Champions title in New York’s Grand Central Terminal next week.

The Egyptian is aiming to become the first four-time women’s champion when she battles for the famous trophy between January 10-17 and only the second player in history to achieve that feat after former men’s World No.1 Jonathon Power.

El Sherbini is relishing the challenge of making history though and, after shrugging off a knee injury to claim an incredible fourth World Championship on her 24th birthday two months ago in front of the Great Pyramid of Giza, the former World No.1 is looking to mark her second appearance of the season with yet another piece of silverware in the ‘Big Apple’.

“This is really big for me, it’s a huge challenge, of course,” said El Sherbini. “The ‘ToC’ was my first [Platinum] title and was the only one that I won three times, so yes I definitely love it there and love playing at Grand Central Terminal. Of course, it brings out the best in me.

“I’m looking forward to one of my favourite tournaments on tour. I love it there and can’t wait to be there. New York is my favourite city, and I enjoy my time there, although the ‘City that Never Sleeps’ is a bit cold for me. But I love and enjoy every time I go and I have a lot of memories there. I can’t list them all, but I’m waiting to make more memories.”

El Sherbini has had an injury-hit start to the 2019-20 campaign but is hoping that the New Year will usher in a sustained period of fitness as she bids to reclaim the World No.1 spot she lost to the woman she beat in last year’s Tournament of Champions final – Raneem El Welily – in November 2018.

“I wanted badly to play this tournament [the World Championship], it was very important and I had no idea what’s going to happen. I wasn’t 100 per cent, it wasn’t the best preparation I wanted, but I’m very happy that I ended up on the winning side.

“The injury still hasn’t healed, but I’m trying to maintain my form and trying to be safe to continue the second half of the season without any damage.”

El Sherbini will return to Grand Central alongside former champions El Welily and Camille Serme, United States No.1 Amanda Sobhy, British Open champion Nouran Gohar and 2018 runner-up Nour El Tayeb.

A men’s tournament begins on January 9 and takes place alongside the women’s event. The 2009 winner Gregory Gaultier makes his highly-anticipated return to the PSA World Tour after 15 months out with a knee injury, while defending champion Ali Farag, two-time winner Mohamed ElShorbagy, World Champion Tarek Momen, World Champion runner-up Paul Coll and 2018 winner Simon Rösner also feature.

A record $390,000 prize purse will be split equally between the men’s and women’s divisions at this year’s ‘ToC’, while a place at June’s PSA World Tour Finals will also be up for grabs. The World Tour Finals brings together the world’s top eight male and female players and features the reigning World Champions as well as all PSA Platinum title winners.

The other places will be allocated to the highest ranked players on the Road to Egypt Standings, with points on offer at all PSA World Tour events throughout the 2019/20 season.

Tickets for the J.P. Morgan Tournament of Champions are on sale now and can be purchased at tocsquash.com/tickets.

Fixtures from Grand Central Terminal will also be broadcast live on SQUASHTV (rest of world), Eurosport Player (Europe only) and the official Facebook page of the PSA World Tour.

Wales captain Alun Wyn Jones has criticised the off-field management of Ospreys before his return to action for the struggling region against Saracens.

International commitments and a groin injury mean Jones has not played for Ospreys since May 2019.

In his absence the region have lost 13 out of 14 games this season, leaving Jones to question their recruitment policy and accountability.

"It comes to a point where you need to be honest," he said.

The 34-year-old second row said he was proud of the way the players were applying themselves and facing up to criticism and scrutiny.

But he added: "You could say that isn't being replicated in other areas of our rugby entity at the minute. I'm saying that because I've been here longer than most.

"There are guys who are doing everything they can, being questioned and answering those questions to the press and trying to do it on the pitch.

"There are probably other people who aren't being held to account.

"It's difficult to say, but that's what I feel having watched and been involved with Ospreys for so long.

"I'm not going to name names, but there were eyebrows raised about recruitment, and the squad that we had and the success that we probably had in the past has papered over the cracks.

"We find ourselves where we are. There are a series of decisions and actions that probably haven't supported the rugby side of the business."

'The players are giving 100%'

Jones will be looking to boost a region that have suffered 11 consecutive losses and have parted company with head coach Allen Clarke.

Former Wales coach Mike Ruddock has spent the last month as a consultant and is being considered for a continuing role until the end of the season.

Jones captained Ospreys for eight years before being replaced by Justin Tipuric and says he has raised the issues within the region.

"It is difficult when you try to give that feedback because there are actions and reactions. I think sometimes we can be less reactive," Jones added.

"Hopefully something will be addressed and that is the positive point of having a forum. Whether it falls on deaf ears or not is the question."

Jones insisted the squad remains committed to turning results around and he wants to help that process.

"However difficult it is being injured, it's not as difficult as the period the boys have found themselves in, so hopefully I can come back and put my oar into the water and help things go forward," said Jones.

"This is a clear message from someone who has been involved and had to watch a difficult period in Ospreys rugby, the players are still giving 100%.

"I know we are not where people would like and have been in the past but the players we have are still conscious of what we represent and the effort required."

Six Nations target

Jones is attempting to prove his fitness before the Six Nations, when Wales coach Wayne Pivac will take charge of his first tournament since replacing Warren Gatland.

The 34-year-old, who currently has 143 caps, could equal former New Zealand captain Richie McCaw's record of 148 Test caps during the tournament, but still feels he need to prove himself despite leading Wales to the 2019 World Cup semi-finals.

"That's gone, it's last year," said Jones.

"I have always said you have to play regional rugby before being in contention for Wales.

"That has not changed for myself and hopefully I have an opportunity on the weekend to see where I am at.

"There is a new regime taking over Wales and I need to put my hand up to be in contention for selection.

"I have been frustrated not to be playing. I still have the desire but just need to get out there."

Justin Tipuric (ankle) and George North (calf) suffered injuries in the 25-18 defeat against Dragons but Ospreys hope the duo will recover for the Saracens game or the final European match at Munster on 19 January.

The all-conquering Saracens squad could be dismantled in order for the club to comply with salary cap rules this season, according to interim chief executive Edward Griffiths.

The Premiership champions were docked 35 points and fined £5.36m in November for breaching salary cap regulations.

Griffiths is leading a "scoping exercise" as the first step in making the club "whiter than white".

And he said he has not ruled out the possibility of letting star players go.

"It's too early to say what we will do, but anybody running a business or anybody running any organisation who, for whatever reason, needs to reduce the salary bill has two fundamental choices,' he told BBC Sport.

"One would be to reduce the head count and the other would be for people to take a pay cut. Now I'm not saying either or both are necessary, but those would be the two options or a combination of the two."

Eight Saracens players represented England in the Rugby World Cup final this year, including Owen Farrell and Maro Itoje.

Griffiths, who was Saracens chief executive from 2008 to 2015, returned to the club last week following Nigel Wray's departure as chairman.

"Obviously it's a difficult time for the club and we want to bring certainty as quickly as possible," he said.

"I think the first step is really to demonstrate, unequivocally, that we are operating within the salary cap in the current season, in the 2019-2020 season, and that is really a challenge on two levels. It's a challenge with spreadsheets and calculators and the numbers, but it's also a challenge in terms of perception.

"The uncertainty is unhelpful within the club and throughout the league and, in fact, English rugby generally.

"So we want to try to draw a line under this matter as soon as possible, but equally we need to be mindful that these measures potentially involve individuals and we need to be sensitive to their needs and to make sure things are done correctly. So we want to move with speed, but also with care."

Saracens, who currently sit bottom of the Premiership table on -7 points, are due to appoint a new independent chairman imminently.

INDIANAPOLIS – Penske Corp., a global transportation, automotive and motorsports leader, announced Monday that it has completed its acquisition of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the NTT IndyCar Series and IMS Productions.

“We are looking forward to carrying on the tradition of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Indy car racing,” said Roger Penske. “We have been diligently working with the teams at IMS, IndyCar and IMS Productions over the last two months to ensure a smooth and productive transition and we are ready to hit the ground running.

“Now, it is time to get to work as we continue the growth of the Speedway and we build on the momentum of the NTT IndyCar Series.”

The purchase of IMS, the NTT IndyCar Series and IMS Productions by Penske was announced Nov. 4, ending a decades-long legacy of ownership by the Hulman-George family.

Penske Corp. becomes just the fourth owner in the history of the famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway, which has hosted the world’s largest single-day sporting event – the Indianapolis 500 Mile Race – for more than 100 years.

Penske joins Carl Fisher, who built the track in 1909; Eddie Rickenbacker, who purchased IMS in 1927; and Tony Hulman and Hulman & Company, which has owned and managed the Speedway since 1945; as an owner of the historic race course.

The iconic venue has also hosted NASCAR, Formula One and other racing series events throughout its storied history.

Bruening Running Full Lucas Oil Late Model Schedule

Published in Racing
Monday, 06 January 2020 08:08

DECORAH, Iowa – Tyler Bruening is set to run his first full season with the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series this year as he pursues top rookie honors.

The pilot of the Skyline Motorsports No. 16 Bennett Explosives/Bruening Rock Products/Capital Race Car/Clements Racing Engine Super Late Model will tackle a national tour for the first time in his career.

Following a successful 2019 season that included nine wins, 25 top-five finishes and 32 top-10 outings, Bruening is confident the time is right for him to shift into the national spotlight.

“This is a big deal for me and my team,” Bruening explained. “We’ve been stepping out to some new tracks and events over the past few years and that has allowed us to make a lot of gains toward the success of our team. It’s an honor to be able to commit to the LOLMDS full-time. My primary goals are to be competitive and consistent each night and win the Rookie of the Year title.”

Bruening brings a wealth of experience behind the wheel to his quest of competing on the national tour. While he acknowledges the journey on the ultra-competitive tour will not be an effortless one, Bruening and his team are primed for the challenges ahead.

“I’ve been working toward this goal for a few years,” Bruening shared. “We’ve made a lot of preparations toward being able to do this, including me working to better myself as a driver. We have top-notch equipment and an experienced team that is well-prepared for what is ahead. With the help of Shane [Clanton] and Marshall [Green] we’ve been able to take our program to a whole new level.”

The Eibach Springs Rookie of the Year title with the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series comes with a $10,000 cash prize at the seasons end, along with numerous other contingency awards.

“A lot of people play a role in the success of our season. I’m very excited to get the 2020 season underway and I want to thank everyone who supports this team to make these opportunities possible,” Bruening added.

MotoAmerica Releases New Rules Package

Published in Racing
Monday, 06 January 2020 08:40

COSTA MESA, Calif. – MotoAmerica has announced that the AMA has issued the rules package for the MotoAmerica Series, the home of AMA Superbike Championship, with regulations that feature slight changes to both the sporting and technical rules.

Starting with the Superbike class, the changes are minimal and apply to both the engine and the chassis to further keep the rules in line with World Superbike regulations.

“We haven’t made many changes to the technical rules,” said MotoAmerica’s Chuck Aksland. “Our competitors appreciate having consistency in the rules without having numerous changes every year. The majority of our changes are just to move things even closer to the rules found in the World Championship. Also the chassis changes in the non-Superbike classes should make things easier for our teams and racers when they are forced to use their spare motorcycles.”

The changes to the electronic packages also trickle down to the Supersport and Junior Cup classes with World Supersport-spec ECUs now allowed in both.

The only other change of any substance is freeing up the fairing/bodywork rules in the Twins Cup class with front and rear fender designs now free with some limitations.

Additionally, the AMA will allow competitors in all classes except Superbike to now have a rolling chassis with airbox, etc. as the spare motorcycle. In Superbike, this doesn’t apply because each rider is already allowed a complete spare motorcycle.

As for the sporting regulation changes, those center around opening up testing regulations and with the adjustment of the way results are calculated if a race ends with a red flag.

The rules package is available for download at this link.
