Cowboys to move on without Garrett, source says

Published in Breaking News
Thursday, 02 January 2020 19:08

Jason Garrett's time with the Dallas Cowboys is coming to an end.

A source told ESPN's Ed Werder that after showing an "abundance of care and respect" for Garrett, team owner/general manager Jerry Jones and executive vice president Stephen Jones have decided the coach will not be part of the organization moving forward.

According to multiple sources, the Joneses and Garrett did not have their scheduled meeting at The Star on Thursday after meeting on Monday and Tuesday without any resolution on the coach's status. Garrett's contract is set to expire on Jan. 14 and his status with the team has been uncertain since last February, when the Cowboys opted not to offer him an extension.

The Cowboys missed the playoffs in 2019 and finished 8-8 for the fourth time in Garrett's nine seasons as coach. He will finish as the second-longest-tenured and second-winningest coach in team history to Tom Landry with a record of 85-67, but he won just two playoff games and was unable to get past the divisional round.

Once the parting becomes official, the Cowboys will begin their first full-blown coaching search since Bill Parcells' retirement following the 2006 season. Before hiring Wade Phillips ahead of the 2007 season, the Cowboys cast a wide net in their interview process that included Garrett, Norv Turner, Mike Singletary, Jim Caldwell, Ron Rivera, Todd Bowles, Todd Haley and Tony Sparano.

Clips' George ruled out with hamstring tightness

Published in Basketball
Thursday, 02 January 2020 21:41

LOS ANGELES -- LA Clippers star Paul George was ruled out of Thursday night's 126-112 victory over the Detroit Pistons with tightness in his left hamstring.

George went back to the locker room with 3:45 remaining in the second quarter. At the end of the half, the team said the guard was questionable to return.

The Clippers started the second half with Rodney McGruder in place of George. The team eventually ruled George out after pushing its lead well past 20 points in the third.

"Nothing happened, he just felt tightness," coach Doc Rivers said after the game. "He said it at halftime and then we just decided not to bring him back. So he's going to be evaluated clearly, I think it's the back more than the legs but I'm not sure."

George left the game with 12 points in 16 minutes.

The Clippers next play on Saturday in the first of a home back-to-back set against Memphis and New York.

Sources: Nets' LeVert expected to return vs. Raps

After missing seven weeks following right thumb surgery, Brooklyn Nets guard Caris LeVert is expected to return to the lineup against the Toronto Raptors on Saturday, league sources tell ESPN.

LeVert, ramping up his workouts lately, will return to a team that has lost four straight -- including 123-111 to Dallas on Thursday -- to drop to 16-17 and in seventh place in the East. Brooklyn has been without two of its best players --LeVert and Kyrie Irving -- for an extended period.

LeVert, 25, had averaged nearly 17 points, five rebounds and four assists before going down in a Nov. 10 game against Phoenix.

LeVert missed 42 games with a foot dislocation last season -- and will have missed an additional 23 games upon returning on Saturday. LeVert signed a three-year, $52.5 million contract extension in the offseason.

He has shown All-Star potential in his four seasons with the Nets, but a series of injuries have curtailed his production. LeVert averaged 21 points in five playoff games against the Sixers last season.

ESPN's Malika Andrews contributed to this report.

Ex-Astros pitcher Harris joins Series nemesis Nats

Published in Baseball
Thursday, 02 January 2020 19:26

Former Houston Astros reliever Will Harris is heading to the team that beat him in last season's World Series.

Harris confirmed Thursday that he has agreed to join the Washington Nationals, with a source confirming to ESPN's Jeff Passan that it is a three-year deal. USA Today reported the deal is worth $24 million.

Harris should jump into an eighth-inning role and could get save opportunities, too, according to Passan.

Harris, 35, was one of manager AJ Hinch's go-to guys out of the bullpen for Houston last season, but he'll inevitably be remembered for allowing the go-ahead home run to Howie Kendrick in Game 7 of the World Series against the Nationals.

"Will it be awkward for a second or two? More than likely, but that stuff fades and it's about playing baseball," Harris told MLB.com when asked what it will be like to see the Nats receive their World Series rings. "I've done my homework, and the guys they have that I know who have played there and been there, everybody has told me I'm going to love it."

Harris said he lived "every reliever's nightmare" after allowing the seventh-inning home run to Kendrick. He also gave up a two-run shot to Anthony Rendon in the seventh inning of Game 6 that gave the Nationals a 5-2 lead.

Harris had a 1.50 ERA and 62 strikeouts in 60 innings for the Astros during the regular season. He also had 26 holds and four saves as the Astros led the majors with 107 wins. He made 12 appearances during the postseason, posting an 0.93 ERA while striking out 11 in 9⅔ innings.

"I felt like the whole process was kind of trending toward the Nationals maybe from the beginning," Harris told MLB.com. "They seemed to be the most bullish on me and made me a priority from the beginning. ... They were on my really, really short list of places I wanted to go, and to have that kind of matchup, I think, was great for everybody."

On Aug. 3, Harris was one of four Astros pitchers to participate in the 14th combined no-hitter in MLB history when they blanked the Seattle Mariners 9-0.

Harris, who broke into the majors with the Colorado Rockies in 2012 and spent two seasons with the Arizona Diamondbacks, joined the Astros in 2015. One season later, he had a career-high 12 saves and made his only All-Star appearance. In 2017, he won his first World Series title.

For his career, the right-hander has a 2.84 ERA, 20 saves and 422 strikeouts in 419 appearances over 396⅓ innings.

Dustin Johnson is a two-time winner in nine career starts at the Tournament of Champions, so he knows his way around Kapalua. But in Thursday's opening round, Johnson likely saw some spots on the course he’d never seen before.

It was an all-over-the-place round for Johnson, who is playing his first individual event on the PGA Tour since the Tour Championship last August.

Johnson missed six fairways and six greens, and he ranked ahead of just one player in strokes gained: off-the-tee, a statistic that Johnson normally dominates. Three of Johnson’s tee balls ended up in the penalty area.

He opened play with a 362-yard drive and 31-foot birdie make at the par-4 first hole, and he added four more birdies and an eagle.

But he also carded four bogeys and a double, which came at the par-5 ninth hole after Johnson yanked his tee shot left into the native area. He also found the thick stuff off the tee at Nos. 12 and 14, bogeying both holes.

Johnson managed to save par from 20 feet at the par-5 18th, where his third shot went 5 yards, and salvaged a 1-under 72. It was just the 12th time in 36 career rounds at the TOC that Johnson had failed to shoot in the 60s.

Through 18 holes, Johnson is six shots behind leader Joaquin Niemann, who missed only one green in Round 1.

Go big on Short and Renshaw

Hobart Hurricanes v Brisbane Heat

Our XI: D'Arcy Short, Ben McDermott, Chris Lynn, Matt Renshaw, Caleb Jewell, David Miller, Ben Cutting, James Faulkner, Riley Meredith, Qais Ahmed, Ben Laughlin

NOTE: We might not always be able to tip you off about late injury (or other relevant updates)

Captain: Matt Renshaw The Hurricanes have bowlers in form and if they cash in on the early wickets, Renshaw, the Heat's top-scorer so far, will have a lot of overs to do his thing. And, let's not forget, he's picking up wickets these days.

Vice-captain: Riley Meredith Meredith is the joint-third best wicket-taker this season and he enjoyed himself when the Hurricanes last played at Bellerive Oval, picking up a clinical three-for. He also has the best economy rate among all those who have bowled at least eight overs in this BBL.

Hot picks

James Faulkner

On a pitch where 150 is par, Faulkner, who has seven wickets in three games so far seems to be the perfect all-round option. His runs could come in handy too.

Chris Lynn

After their collapse against Perth Scorchers, Lynn took it on himself to apologise to the fans calling their 109 all out display "embarrassing." He will be eager to make amends, and after his 94 against Sydney Sixers, you can't ignore a player of his caliber.

D'Arcy Short

After being picked for the India tour, Short will have plenty of eyes on him before he leaves the BBL. With two fifties already, he is in good touch and an out-of-form Heat bowling unit adds to Short's value. Could be a good pick for captain or vice-captain too.

Value picks

Ben Laughlin

He became the first bowler to 100 BBL wickets in the last game and is currently the Heat's joint-highest wicket-taker. If they can put a respectable total on board, he will be their main man for top-order wickets.

Ben McDermott

A fifty in the last game at the same venue should give you hope but the Hurricane's over-reliance on Short and his subsequent exit later on will mean McDermott will need to step up sooner than later.

Point to note

  • The Bellerive Oval pitch is best suited for batsmen who aren't quite big hitters but prefer to pace their innings cautiously. So choose your batsmen carefully and it also won't be a bad idea to pack your XI with death bowlers.

Georgia lands No. 6 overall prospect Washington

Published in Breaking News
Thursday, 02 January 2020 17:28

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Georgia added a five-star commitment on Thursday when tight end Darnell Washington announced his commitment to the Dawgs at the Under Armour All-America Game.

Washington, a 6-foot-7, 260-pound tight end ranked No. 6 overall in the ESPN 300, chose Georgia over Alabama, Florida, Miami and Tennessee and announced the commitment by revealing a Georgia onesie on his daughter.

"They all had great academics, facilities; it was pretty much the relationship and how much I trust having their offense getting me to the next level," Washington said. "When I first got offered by Georgia, some schools offer and stop talking to you, but at Georgia they built that relationship. They recruited me really hard."

Washington is only the third tight end to earn a five-star ranking since the ESPN 300 started in 2011. He joins Arik Gilbert, an LSU commit in this class, and Isaac Nauta, who signed with Georgia in the 2016 class. Georgia already had the No. 4-ranked class prior to this commitment, so it's safe to say the Dawgs will be moving up in the class rankings after Thursday.

Teammates Daniyel Ngata and Elijhah Badger, out of Folsom High School in Folsom, California, also announced their commitment to a Pac-12 team, both choosing Arizona State during Thursday's game.

Ngata, a 5-foot-9, 185-pound running back, is the No. 46-ranked recruit, and he chose Arizona State over Clemson, Oklahoma State, Utah and Texas A&M, among others. Badger is a 6-foot, 185-pound receiver, ranked No. 200 overall and chose the Sun Devils over USC and Oregon. Badger joins ESPN 300 receiver Johnny Wilson and four-star Chad Johnson Jr. in this class, and that should help Arizona State's offense in the immediate future.

Colorado also landed a commit during the game with ESPN 300 defensive end Jason Harris, the No. 84-ranked recruit overall. Harris is a 6-foot-7, 215-pound prospect out of Higley High School in Gilbert, Arizona. He's the top-ranked commit in the Colorado class and joins ESPN 300 running back Ashaad Clayton and ESPN 300 quarterback Brendon Lewis.

It wasn't just the Pac-12 that got good news on the day, though, as ESPN 300 quarterback Chandler Morris announced his commitment to Oklahoma. Morris is the son of Auburn offensive coordinator Chad Morris, who was recently let go as the head coach at Arkansas.

Chandler Morris had been committed to his dad at Arkansas, but he decommitted once his father was fired. The 5-foot-11, 170-pounder out of Highland Park High School in Highland Park, Texas, chose to go a different route other than playing for his dad this time around and picked the Sooners.

He announced the commitment by ceremoniously flashing the "horns down" signal with his hands, a gesture to Oklahoma rival Texas. With Morris committed, Oklahoma now has nine ESPN 300 commitments in the class and is adding Morris to a quarterback room that already includes the No. 1 dual-threat quarterback in 2019 in Spencer Rattler and former ESPN 300 quarterback Tanner Mordecai from the 2018 class.

Oregon also got in on the fun, landing ESPN 300 cornerback Dontae Manning. The 6-foot, 175-pound defensive back is ranked No. 23 overall and is the No. 2 cornerback in the class. Manning hails from Raytown High School in Raytown, Missouri, and gives Oregon seven ESPN 300 commitments, led by five-star linebacker Justin Flowe.

Sources: Ex-Twins C Castro agrees with Angels

Published in Baseball
Thursday, 02 January 2020 18:08

Catcher Jason Castro has agreed to a one-year, $6.85 million contract with the Los Angeles Angels, sources told ESPN's Jeff Passan on Thursday.

The contract for the left-handed-hitting Castro is pending a physical.

A nine-year veteran, Castro, 32, hit .232 with 13 homers and 30 RBIs in 79 games with the Minnesota Twins last season. In 825 career games, he has hit 86 homers, driven in 292 runs and averaged .231 per season.

A first-round pick out of Stanford in the 2008 draft, Castro played six seasons with the Houston Astros before spending the past three seasons with the Twins.

Castro rounds out an Angels lineup that added third baseman Anthony Rendon and should have top outfield prospect Jo Adell in the big leagues early this season.

Minnesota Miracle! Wild eager for Winter Classic

Published in Hockey
Thursday, 02 January 2020 15:37

ST. LOUIS PARK, Minn. -- The day after the Minnesota Wild were officially awarded the NHL's next Winter Classic, they fittingly had practice scheduled for one of the area's many outdoor rinks.

Eager to serve as a first-time participant in the 2021 edition of the league's signature regular-season event to be staged at Target Field, the Wild also couldn't help but think, "What took so long?"

The organization has long lobbied to host this annual in-the-elements New Year's Day game -- which began in 2008 -- touting a state where the sport's tradition is as strong as any in America with generations of skaters on frozen lakes and ponds and even hosed-down parkland.

"You just felt like the people here, they deserved one," left wing Zach Parise said after the workout Thursday that was open to the public in St. Louis Park, a first-ring suburb of Minneapolis.

The Wild did play in a Stadium Series game in 2016 at TCF Bank Stadium, but those don't quite get the same exposure or carry the same prestige.

"It was a little overdue, but we finally got one, and we'll all enjoy it," said Parise, one of three Minnesota natives on the roster.

The Wild lacked the brand power of most of the previous hosts, one reason the NHL has been hesitant to send the game to Minnesota. Dallas became the 10th different market to hold one when the Stars beat Nashville 4-2 at the Cotton Bowl on Wednesday in the southern most of the 29 outdoor games the league has sanctioned. There have been 12 editions of the Winter Classic, with Chicago, New York, St. Louis, Boston, Washington, Detroit, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and Buffalo all getting a turn. Chicago and Boston each had two, one in a baseball venue and one in a football stadium.

The league has yet to decide the opponent for Minnesota, but a Central Division rival like Chicago, Dallas, St. Louis or Winnipeg is a good bet.

"The memory of growing up doing it, I think that's the cool part," said center Eric Staal, who's from Thunder Bay, Ontario, just across the Canadian border with northeast Minnesota. "You did so much of it as a kid, for the love the game, just playing outside on the pond and fooling around."

The Twins have long been interested in hosting the event, so they were more than willing to commit to the necessary winterizing of the ballpark. The building, which opened in 2010, has ample indoor spaces and radiant heaters for those not uncommonly cold and wet April games, but it was not designed for January use.

The Winter Classic was previously played in baseball venues in New York, St. Louis, Washington, Philadelphia, Boston and Chicago. Target Field will be equipped to sell about 40,000 tickets, far less than the crowd of more than 85,000 who packed the Cotton Bowl on Wednesday. That was the second-largest crowd in league history, behind the Winter Classic in 2014 that drew more than 105,000 to Michigan Stadium when Detroit was the host.

"It's kind of serendipity that in our 20th anniversary season we get to host this outdoor game," Wild president Matt Majka said. "So maybe it's a good thing that we waited this long."
