Late hit knocks Baylor's Brewer out of Sugar Bowl

Published in Breaking News
Wednesday, 01 January 2020 21:43

NEW ORLEANS -- Baylor quarterback Charlie Brewer was knocked out of Wednesday's Allstate Sugar Bowl with a neck injury he sustained on a late hit by Georgia defensive lineman Travon Walker.

Brewer lay on the ground for several minutes, surrounded by athletic trainers, after he was hit while running toward the sideline during the fourth quarter. He was eventually helped to his feet and taken to the locker room on the back of a golf cart.

"They told me as I came in here that they were checking his neck, you know, C-spine," Baylor coach Matt Rhule said. "They said he cleared the C-spine just now. But that's what they were concerned about was his neck. He didn't exhibit any head symptoms, but I'm sure they'll continue to monitor him, though, after this and throughout the night just to make sure."

Walker was flagged for the late hit, and Georgia was penalized 15 yards. Jacob Zeno took over at quarterback for Brewer and completed four of nine passes for 23 yards and an interception. Georgia went on to win the game 26-14.

Brewer, who sustained a concussion during the Big 12 championship game last month, finished the Sugar Bowl 24-of-41 passing for 211 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

Rhule told ESPN that Brewer has sustained three concussions in his career. Brewer told ESPN before the Sugar Bowl that after he sustained that concussion on Dec. 7, he spent about a week in a dark room and didn't remember much about it.

"Charlie is just a competitor," Rhule said. "He's a winner. He's tough. ... It's scary when they're holding his head and all that, and he's laying there to stabilize his neck, and he's sitting there yelling to them to let go of him and let him go back in the game. He's just that kind of guy.

"He's a great player whose best football is ahead of him. We have to become better on offense quickly, and protecting him where he can stay upright is a major thing."

Rhule said of the game, "We got to the Sugar Bowl and just weren't quite able to get over the hump."

Georgia freshman receiver George Pickens was named the game's most valuable player after he caught 12 passes for 175 yards and a touchdown.

Bulldogs quarterback Jake Fromm, who went through an up-and-down junior season, finished on a high note, completing 20 of 30 passes for 250 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions.

The Georgia native, whom ESPN's Mel Kiper Jr. has listed as the fifth-highest-rated quarterback, brushed off questions about his future. Asked about the decision of whether to turn pro, he said, "We'll talk about that later."

Fromm has until Jan. 20 to declare for the draft.

An agent recently recalled the halcyon days for free-agent relievers, when teams aggressively bid on bullpen pieces -- and it really wasn't so long ago, in this rapidly evolving sport.

There was that winter, the agent fondly remembered, when Tommy Hunter got $18 million from the Phillies. At about the same time, the Rockies invested almost $100 million in Wade Davis, Bryan Shaw and Mike Dunn. A lot of teams seemed to flirt with the conceit.

That was before 2019, however, a year destined to be remembered for the juiced ball conversation -- but should be remembered for the reemergence of the starting pitcher as the game's most coveted asset.

January 2020: Olympic qualification tops schedule

Published in Table Tennis
Thursday, 02 January 2020 01:03

Staged from Wednesday 1st to Saturday 4th January, the Marvellous 12 forms part of China’s selection policy for the major events of the year, notably the World Team Championships to be staged in Busan in late March.

However, it is Gondomar in Portugal that eyes focus on the international scene. From Wednesday 22nd to Sunday 26th January, the ITTF World Team Qualification tournament will staged.

At the conclusion of proceedings nine outfits will qualify to each of the men’s team and women’s team events at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games; furthermore, each team will be entitled to confirm two players to compete in each of the men’s singles and women’s singles events.

Notable teams

Major contenders for honours in Tokyo, the likes of China, Germany and Japan have already qualified but there are most significant teams on duty.

At the Zen-Noh 2019 World Team Cup, the Korea Republic and Chinese Taipei were prominent, both bronze secured medals in the women’s team event, in the men’s team competition it was silver for Korea Republic, bronze for Chinese Taipei.

Both compete are listed amongst the 34 men’s and 30 women’s teams that will compete in Gondomar.

Pacific coast

Meanwhile, as play progresses on the Atlantic coast, it is the same on the Pacific coast; the Chile Para Open takes place in Santiago from Friday 24th to Sunday 26th January. Just as in Gondomar there is a Tokyo bearing; vital world ranking points are at stake.

The top ranked male athletes, not otherwise qualified, taking into account the quota for the individual event, on the ITTF Para World Rankings for Tuesday 31st March 72 men and 28 women will gain places for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.

Theme

Improving world status, it is very much the theme at the end of the month, the ITTF World Tour 2020 German Open commences with qualification on Tuesday 28th January. Moreover, there is an Olympic ring to the tournament.

Gold medallists in Rio de Janeiro four years ago, China’s Ma Long and Ding Ning appear on the entry list.

Fiji lock Leone Nakarawa has rejoined Glasgow Warriors until the end of the season after being sacked by Racing 92.

The 31-year-old was released by the Paris side having reported late from the Rugby World Cup.

Despite being courted by clubs in France and England, he has chosen to return to Glasgow, where he excelled in a three-year stint until 2016.

The off-loading lock was pivotal in Warriors' run to the 2015 Pro12 title - their only major honour.

He is available for their Pro14 trip to Benetton on Saturday, as Dave Rennie's men aim to improve on their fourth-place standing in Conference A.

A sevens gold medallist at the 2016 Rio Olympics, Nakarawa has won 62 caps for his country's XVs side, and was named in the 2015 World Cup team of the tournament.

"I've remained close with my ex-team-mates during my time in Paris and they played a big role in my decision to come back," Nakarawa told Glasgow's official club website.

"I'm really looking forward to working with Dave Rennie and the coaching staff. Glasgow Warriors play an attacking style, which suits the way I like to play."

Glasgow Warriors head coach Rennie, added: "Everyone knows how dangerous he is with ball in hand, and Glasgow supporters have fond memories of his previous exploits in a Warriors jersey."

Nigel Wray: Saracens owner retires as club chairman

Published in Rugby
Thursday, 02 January 2020 02:05

Saracens owner Nigel Wray has retired as club chairman with immediate effect.

Wray first invested in the club in 1995 and reclaimed full control in April 2018 by buying back a 50% stake sold to South African firm Remgro.

Saracens were deducted 35 points and fined £5.36m in November after an inquiry into business dealings between Wray and some Sarries players.

"As we enter a new year, a new decade, it is time for the club to make a fresh start," he said in a statement.

"I am not getting any younger and feel this is the right moment for me to stand down as chairman and just enjoy being a fan of this incredible rugby club."

He added that the Wray family "will continue to provide the required financial support to the club".

Edward Griffiths is returning to the club as interim chief executive for the next 12 months.

Saracens established themselves as the dominant force in English club rugby over the past decade, winning the Premiership title on five occasions and being crowned European champions three times, most recently when they beat Leinster 20-10 in last season's final.

But their reputation was severely tarnished by the financial scandal which emerged last year.

They were sanctioned by a disciplinary panel for breaching salary cap regulations in the past three seasons.

Saracens apologised for "administrative errors relating to the non-disclosure of some transactions" to Premiership Rugby Limited.

In a statement, Wray said the sanctions were "absolutely devastating" for everyone connected with the club.

He added: "It has been acknowledged by the panel that we never deliberately sought to mislead anyone or breach the cap and that's why it feels like the rug is being completely pulled out from under our feet."

The club initially indicated they would appeal, but later decided not to take the matter any further and Wray said they accepted the penalties "with humility".

They have won five of their seven Premiership games so far this season, but are bottom of the table on -12 points and are 18 points from safety.

Analysis

Chris Jones, BBC rugby union correspondent

Wray's legacy has been tarnished by the salary cap scandal, and it is surely no coincidence he is standing down just months after the breaking of the storm which battered his and the club's reputation.

However, Wray has had a seismic impact on English and European rugby over the past 25 years, both as the beating heart of Saracens and as a prominent and influential voice in the sport.

Wray has done as much as anyone to drag rugby union into the professional era. Without benefactors like him, the professional club game would not exist.

Sources: Crisis-hit United eye Longstaff, Can

Published in Soccer
Thursday, 02 January 2020 02:04

Emre Can and Sean Longstaff are among the options being considered by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as Manchester United deal with a midfield injury crisis, sources have told ESPN.

Solskjaer admitted after the 2-0 defeat to Arsenal on Wednesday that injuries to Scott McTominay and Paul Pogba would "play on our decision-making" during the January window.

McTominay is expected to be sidelined for two months with a knee ligament injury while Pogba needs surgery on an ankle problem and could be out for a month.

The United board will back Solskjaer with funds to bolster his squad, but only if long-term targets become available.

Longstaff was an option in the summer but Newcastle's valuation of £50 million proved too big a stumbling block. Can is out of favour at Juventus and keen to leave but United face competition from Borussia Dortmund.

James Maddison remains Solskjaer's top midfield target but there is acceptance Leicester will not want to do business midway through a season during which they are challenging for a place in the top four.

Aston Villa's Jack Grealish and West Ham's Declan Rice are also being monitored. Nemanja Matic is open to leaving Old Trafford in January after falling down the pecking order but it is unlikely he will be allowed to depart while Solskjaer is so short of bodies in midfield.

"Of course, it's playing on our decision-making when you've got two players out -- Paul out for a month and Scott for two," said Solskjaer after the defeat at the Emirates on New Year's Day.

"That will give us less options and we've got loads of games and important games. Still, it's got to be right and that's the point here.

"If he's available and it's possible, we'll do something, definitely. We're looking at one or two."

Meanwhile, United have moved to clarify comments made by Solskjaer that it was Pogba's "people" who decided he needed an operation.

Sources have told ESPN FC that scans carried out by the club's medical staff confirmed the 26-year-old would need an operation to resolve an ongoing foot problem and when the results were shared with Pogba's own specialist, it was agreed the Frenchman will have to undergo surgery "as soon as possible."

After losing the top spot in December, China’s Fan Zhendong returns to the pinnacle of the men’s world ranking as Xu Xin now appears at no.2. For the women, Japan’s Mima Ito has climbed one place to no.3 while Chinese Taipei’s Cheng I-Ching dropped from no.8 to no.10.

What about the others outside the top 10?

Newer and higher destinations

Taking a look at the top 50 names on the women’s world rankings, it is again a monumental leap for China’s Qian Tianyi and 2019 Hong Kong Open winner Wang Yidi.

A previous best last month in December, Qian Tianyi is on an upward curve, moving from no.43 to no.30 with her compatriot Wang Yidi climbing to her best ever ranking of no. 13 from no.18. It was a slight but momentous change for Puerto Rico’s Adriana Diaz, who reached her career high ranking of world no. 21. after rising one spot.

For the men, Korea Republic has two major movers as Jeoung Youngsik and An Jaehyun both climb, while China’s Zhao Zihao and Wang Chuqin achieved their career high listings. After having set some high standards in November and December, Zhao Zihao climbs from no.29 to no.24,  as Wang Chuqin advances from no.15 to no.12.

An Jaehyun is slowly rising into the top side of table tennis, as he exceeded his previous highest listing of no.40 earlier last month, moving now to no.39. But it was his compatriot and senior Jeoung Youngsik who climbed five spots from no.18 to get the world no.13 ranking for himself.

Movements aplenty down the women’s list

There were plenty of changes seen in the final 31 days of the decade, with some major unexpected rises and falls. On the women’s ranking list, Singapore’s Lin Ye reached new heights in December, meaning her climb to world no.58 from no.63 was well warranted.

However, it was to be a rough final month of the year for Japan’s Saki Shibata, who lost 11 spots to now be the world no.43. This was in fact down to the two major drops slightly higher up the list when China’s He Zhuojia and Korea Republic’s Suh Hyowon both dropped 5 places each and are now world no.18 and no.24 respectively.

There was good news further down the list for China’s Li Jiayi who climbed a mammoth 35 places to reach the world no.160 ranking, making her the biggest climber in the first rankings of the new decade. Following on her closely was her compatriot Qiang Zhang who also climbed 29 spots and now holds the no.106 rank.

Sadly for Noway’s Ma Wenting, it was the drop of 12 spots which brings her to no.186, edging closer to the dreaded 200 number. Belgian Lung Lisa and Italian Giorgia Piccolin both lost 4 spots and will want to push on in 2020 with her new rankings of no.126 and no.124 respectively.

Shake up in the men’s list

Moving beyond the top 50 in the men’s list, there are some names which caught the the eye – but not always for the best of reasons. Such is the double-edged nature of the World Rankings, where there are success stories, there are some who could not follow through on the promise.

But to start with the major positives, the success story of Ibrahima Diaw continues. He has again moved from a previous best of no.82 to no.76. This makes it the second month running, that he sets the highest world ranking ever achieved by a player from Senegal.

Moving from one career best to another, it is no different for Hungary’s Bence Majoros, who is the fourth-highest climber in this month’s rankings, attaining the no. 59 after gaining 10 spots. Just slightly above him in the rankings, France’s Can Akkuzu climbs to world no.71 after a stunning 27 spot-climb. India’s Manav Vikash Thakkar also climbed 20 spots to reach the world no.132.

The biggest rise however, is within the realms of the top 200, where two Chinese men rose 37 and a gigantic 90 spots respectively. Xu Haidong and Xiang Peng are now the world no.130 and no.138, shaking up the men’s ranking like no one else.

Naturally, because of these upward changes there were some butterfly effects down the list. Both Korea Republic’s Lee Sangsu and Japan’s Koki Niwa dropped three spots to reach world no.20 and no.15 respectively, as Sweden’s Kristian Karlsson and Portugal’s Marcos Freitas dropped a place each to no.25 and no.26.

The major losses, however, came for the likes of Korea Republic’s Lim Jonghoon, Australia’s Heming Hu and Japan’s Yuya Oshima.

Lim Jonghoon has lost 12 positions to now be the world no.43 and despite a strong performance at the Men’s World Cup, Hu Heming is now 10 spots down to no.84. Japan’s Yuya Oshima meanwhile, fell 96 spots and just about stays in the Top 200 at world no.198.

However, none of these come close to the 112 spot drop for China’s Liu Dingshuo who falls to no.227, after having dropped from no.51 to no.115 just last month.

Fan Zhendong made his way back to the top of the ITTF men’s world ranking, and is now the first-ever men’s world no.1 of the new 2020 decade!

He achieved this by the tightest of margins – only 440 points ahead of compatriot Xu Xin who held the top position in December by nearly the same number of points.

Fan capped off his stunning end of 2019 with the Agricultural Bank of China World Tour Grand Finals win, after having already secured the Chengdu Airlines ITTF Men’s World Cup, ITTF World Tour Platinum German and Austrian Open events all in a power-packed end to the season.

Men’s Singles Top 10

This change has put Xu Xin back at no.2, where he is followed by Ma Long, who was defeated by Fan in ITTF World Tour Grand Finals men’s singles title decider between two of China’s undisputed heavyweights.

Such has been the competition that there is no further change in the top five, with Lin Gaoyuan and Japan’s Tomokazu Harimoto remaining in their respective fourth and fifth places.

The progress of the top teenagers continues, as the young prodigy from Chinese Taipei has made the another noticeable progression; 18 year old Lin Yun-Ju has moved from a previous best of no.7 to a career high of no.6 after he reached the quarter-finals of the World Tour Grand Finals!

On his way there, he defeated Sweden’s Mattias Falck, who himself has risen to world no.8, which saw Brazil’s Hugo Calderano dropping a spot to world no.7. Capping off the rest of the top 10, there are minute after effects as Liang Jingkun has dropped yet another spot to world no.9 and the Chinese is followed by German legend Timo Boll who sticks to his no.10 ranking.

Women’s Singles Top 10

While there were slight changes at the top of the order for the men, the women had it all the same near the summit, with some big movers right below. China’s world no.1 Chen Meng is the first woman to hold that position in the new 2020 decade, and with her recent form, that might not change for sometime.

Her success at the World Tour Grand Finals in Zhengzhou meant she has now won the competition three times – equalling a feat achieved only once before by her compatriot Liu Shiwen, who dropped off one spot in the latest rankings to world no.4.

China’s Sun Yingsha meanwhile retained her place at world no.2 while her teammates, Zhu Yuling and Wang Manyu, have interchanged their positions – with Wang rising into the top five after her stunning silver-medal finish at the World Tour Grand Finals, and Zhu dropping out to the world no.6 spot.

Japan’s Mima Ito continued her rise in between the Chinese sandwich – now becoming the world no.3, after gaining one spot in December after she reached the semi-finals of the World Tour Grand Finals. The 19-year-olds Sun Yingsha and Mima Ito have yet again come out with the highest ranking of their careers to kick-start the New Year in splendid fashion.

There is no change for the “Queen of Hearts”, Ding Ning (no.7), but there are major movements following her. Singapore’s Feng Tianwei gained one spot to reach world no.8 ahead of Japan’s Kasumi Ishikawa, who also moved up to world no.9 because of the biggest drop in the top 10 that followed.

After having broken into the top 10 last month, Chinese Taipei’s Cheng I-Ching completes the rankings this time, losing two spots to from no.8 to world no.10 after a difficult end to her 2019.

A decade of success, two names stand out

Published in Table Tennis
Thursday, 02 January 2020 00:13

The fact is reflected on the world rankings; since January 2010, when the monthly listings have been published, the name of Ma Long has appeared at the very top of the order on no less than 64 times.

Similarly on the counterpart women’s list, during the same period, on 53 occasions Ding Ning has been at the very pinnacle.

Both are well clear of the field; one that if we consider the names of the players who have ascended to the top spot on the world rankings in that period is dominated by China; the notable interlopers on the men’s list are Germany’s Timo Boll and Dimitrij Ovtcharov, the women’s order is complete.

Timo Boll appeared at the head of the ranking on four monthly listings; for Dimitrij Ovtcharov twice his name was above all others.

China

Otherwise, it has been the might of China.

On the men’s rankings Xu Xin is next in line to Ma Long having appeared in first place on 21 publications. He is followed by Fan Zhendong 16 times, Zhang Jike seven appearances and Wang Hao, six such top spots.

Seven names at the top of the order in a timescale of 120 publications; for the women it is one less.

All Chinese names, second on the list to Ding Ning is Liu Shiwen with 33 monthly top listings, followed by Chen Meng on 12 occasions and Zhu Yuling nine times. Now retired from international play, Li Xiaoxia and Guo Yan complete the elite order. Li Xiaoxia during her illustrious career secured the top spot eight times, the name of Guo Yan appeared ten times.

Top ten

The fact that as an illustrious Chinese name retires, another is ready to step into their shoes is illustrated; the depth of talent is also underlined by the number of Chinese players who during the period have gained a top 10 listing.

In addition, on the men’s listings, of the current generation Fang Bo, Liang Jingkun, Lin Gaoyuan and Yan An have gained top ten places as for the now retired have Chen Qi, Hao Shuai, Ma Lin and Wang Liqin.

Likewise, for the women the names of Chen Xingtong, Sun Yingsha, Wang Manyu and Wu Yang have all gained top 10 places as have from a previous generation, Guo Yue, Fan Ying, Feng Yalan, Wang Nan and Zhang Yining.

It is now a trend followed by Japan; since January 2010 Tomokazu Harimoto, Kenta Matsudaira, Jun Mizutani and Koki Niwa have all appeared in the top ten of the men’s rankings as on the women’s listings have Ai Fukuhara, Kasumi Ishikawa, Mima Ito, Miu Hirano, Sayaka Hirano and Hitomi Sato.

Australia attack 'can compete with any era' - Glenn Mcgrath

Published in Cricket
Wednesday, 01 January 2020 23:40

Australia have a bowling attack to compare to "any era", Glenn McGrath has said, as the Test team targets a clean sweep of the summer powered by the performances of Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, James Pattinson and Nathan Lyon.

The season began with talk of whether Steven Smith could continue his Ashes feats (Neil Wagner has stopped that), then moved on to David Warner's run-glut against Pakistan and the emergence of Marnus Labuschagne as a world-class No. 3. Through all of that, the excellence of Australia with ball in hand has continued unabated. They have conceded over 300 just twice - Pakistan's 335 in Brisbane is currently the highest opposition total of the summer - while New Zealand failed to cross 200 in the first three innings of the current series.

The individual returns of the five bowlers this season make for impressive reading: Starc 25 wickets at 16.96, Lyon 17 wickets at 27.94, Cummins 16 wickets at 25.56, Hazlewood 11 wickets at 20.00 and Pattinson six wickets at 11.50.

Starc, who began the summer outside of the Test XI, has reaffirmed his Test credentials while Cummins has consolidated his position as the No, 1 bowler in the world. Hazlewood has missed the final two Tests of the season after picking up a hamstring injury in Perth, which gave Pattinson his chance in Melbourne, and he is set to play back-to-back Tests for the first since returning to the Test side during the Ashes. Who misses out when they are all fit will be a tough call for the selectors, although it's precisely that depth available that gives the feeling of Australia building a dominance that can last.

McGrath was part of one of Australia's greatest attacks when he joined forces with Jason Gillespie, Brett Lee and Shane Warne, and he believes this group has the same attributes.

"They are right up there, without a doubt, their stats prove that," McGrath said on the eve of the annual Pink Test at the SCG which is used to raise funds for the McGrath Foundation. "They are forming an attack that can compete with any era of Australian cricket.

"That spell on the [third] day [at the MCG] with Pat Cummins and James Pattinson, the way they bowled in tandem, was as good a fast bowling as you'll see anywhere in the world. To have Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood as well, four quality bowlers, throw in Nathan Lyon as well, it's as good a bowling attack as we've had. A lot people say New Zealand has been disappointing but I think a lot of that has been because of the way our bowlers have bowled. In Australian conditions they are tough to face, they will be tough to face anywhere in the world but especially at home."

The bowling attack came together well before the events of Newlands and even during the tough times Australia were generally able to field a strong bowling unit. They were repelled by a world-class India batting line-up last season - and did not have the volume of runs to work with, which has been the luxury this season - then during the Ashes the horses-for-courses approach meant a different collection each match, but this season there has been a consistency to the selection barring the Hazlewood injury, which in itself has highlighted the riches on offer with Pattinson's potency.

"I think it's pretty exciting that we can continually put three or four big strong fast bowlers on the park," Tim Paine said. "It's not something we can take for granted, we've got to keep working away and I'm sure Cricket Australia are behind the scenes, trying to develop more. We've just lost Peter Siddle who has been a great influence on that bowling group, again we're lucky that you've got your Hazlewoods and your James Pattinsons, Mitchell Starcs, that have played a lot of Tests.

"I think at the moment the three or four we're able to get on the park consistently are as a group of bowlers are right up there with as good as we've had. There's no doubt walking out to bat against our attack right now is a difficult prospect for even the best players in the world."

For those facing the onslaught it has been a daunting prospect with rarely any relief in sight whether with the old ball or new. "It's been an immense challenge," Tom Latham said. "It's been an enjoyable one, yes we haven't quite had the results from a batting point of view, but to test ourselves in these conditions against four world-class bowlers, it has been a challenge and that's the standard we want to reach."

After this series concludes in Sydney, Australia's next Test assignment is two matches in Bangladesh in June - which will be a good examination of the adaptability of the quick bowlers chosen - before the next Australian season which includes the mouth-watering prospect of the head-to-head with India's stellar attack, including Jasprit Bumrah, Ishant Sharma and Mohammed Shami, who proved too good last season. A lot can happen in a year - just ask this Australia team - but right now that has the prospect of a great tussle.
