Oswego Sets Busy 70th Anniversary Schedule

Published in Racing
Wednesday, 01 January 2020 17:51

OSWEGO, N.Y. – Oswego Speedway officials have released the track’s 70th anniversary schedule, which will begin with a Memorial Weekend special on Saturday, May 23 and will be capped by Budweiser Classic Week 64 from Sept. 4-6.

The track’s weekly Novelis Supermodified and Pathfinder Bank SBS divisions will compete on all but one date a piece while special events are planned for the 350 Supermodifieds and the Sunoco New York Super Stock Series.

For the third year in a row, the 13-race title fight for the Novelis Supermodifieds will open with the Jim Shampine Memorial Twin 50’s on May 23 alongside a full card of racing for Pathfinder Bank SBS and 350 Supers, both of which will begin their points season that evening as well.

Following more than 200 laps of competitive racing on opening day, the speedway will bounce back into action one week later as the winged warriors of the ISMA Supermodified tour will be back in the Port City for the 50-lap Jack Murphy Memorial.

While the SBS division will support the ISMA Supermodifieds on May 30, Small Block Super teams will receive the night off on Saturday, June 6 as the speedway will welcome back the Sunoco New York Super Stock Series for their first of three planned appearances.

Additionally, Novelis Supers will be back on the calendar for their third full-point feature of the season set at 50 laps in distance. Supermods will be joined by the 350 Super class, which will also receive one week off following the Opener. The winged 350’s will go 25 laps while the full-fendered stock cars are set for 30-laps.

The following Saturday, June 13, marks the return of a familiar Oswego Speedway tradition over forty years in the making; Novelis Supermodified Twin 35’s. The twin 35-lap features debuted at the Steel Palace in June of ’76 and returned in 2014 following a long absence. A 30-lapper for Pathfinder Bank SBS will support the second double feature event of the season for Supers.

The third June event will be the Spring Championship program on June 20, with the Novelis Supermodifieds squaring off in a 60-lap main event.

Oswego’s Spring Championship will be headlined by the extra-distance feature for the big blocks alongside a 35-lapper for Pathfinder Bank SBS. The Spring finale is one of three 60-lap mains scheduled for the Supermodifieds in 2020.

Following the track’s traditional off week for high school graduation on June 27, the summer will officially begin with an even bigger one as the speedway has tabbed Saturday, July 4 for a four-division Independence Day Championship.

Racing action on Saturday, July 4 will be headlined by a 100-lap main event for the Supers; the first race at this distance since RoC Weekend of 2013. The day will feature an additional 100 laps of feature action, including the inaugural Sportsman Modified Xtra Money Race, plus regular programs for the Pathfinder Bank SBS and 350 Supers.

Novelis Supermodified teams will receive the night off on July 11 as ISMA Supermodifieds will be in action at Jukasa Motor Speedway in Ontario. While Super teams shift gears to compete north of the border, Oswego Speedway will still be in competition with Double Feature Night on tap for the Pathfinder Bank SBS and 350 Supermodifieds.

Those at the Oswego Speedway on July 11 will be treated to 80-laps of feature racing between these two divisions as both the Small Block Supers and winged 350 Supers are set to contest in a pair of Twin 20-lap main events in this co-headliner.

One week later, the 34th running of the 75-lap, $10,000 to win Mr. Novelis Supermodified takes center stage on July 18 alongside the 35-lap, $1,500 to win Mr. Pathfinder Bank SBS show.

Oswego Speedway will be off on Saturday, July 25 for Harborfest as well as the International Supermodified Ass’n’s annual Hy-Miler Nationals scheduled for that Friday and Saturday at Ohio’s Sandusky Speedway.

An extra Saturday in August will allow for four big shows to bring the Speedway down the home stretch of the championship schedule and things will get kicked back into high gear on August 1 with the second of three 60-lap Super shows on Summer Championship Night for all three Supermod divisions.

Saturday, Aug. 8 brings the second of three Sunoco New York Super Stock Series events on Retro Night at Oswego Speedway which will coincide with the Oswego Speedway Old Timer’s Reunion at Lighthouse Lanes. This date will also serve as a regular program for the Novelis Supermodified and Pathfinder Bank SBS series.

Novelis Supermodified and Pathfinder Bank SBS teams will then participate in another 50 and 30-lap show; their final of the season, one week later on Aug. 15. 350 Supers will also be on the schedule for the second to last point race of the year.

The battle to determine Oswego Speedway’s 70th Anniversary track champions will come to a close on Saturday, Aug. 22 with the return of $5 Admission Teal Palace Track Championship Night. The Supermodifieds will compete in a 60-lap championship to close the regular season, while the Pathfinder Bank SBS and 350 Supermodifieds will run 35 and 30-lap mains respectively.

Finally, the most anticipated weekend of the year will get underway on Friday, Sept. 4 as Bud Classic Week 64 begins with qualifying. Serving as the night cap, the Sunoco New York Super Stock Series will complete their slate at Oswego with the Dave London Memorial XII. Super Stocks will race 75-laps on Classic Friday.

Classic Saturday will have just a little bit different of a feel in 2020. For a fifth year in a row, the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour is back on the schedule with the running of the 150-lap, Toyota Mod Classic 150 presented by McDonald’s. While the ISMA Supermodifieds have served as the co-headliner in the past, the 350 Super Busch Classic 35 will now move to Sept. 5 under the lights.

The pavement season will come to a close on Sunday, Sept. 6 with the richest Supermodified race in the world; the 64th running of the Budweiser International Classic 200 for Novelis Supermodifieds. The Pathfinder Bank SBS division will also compete in the 29th Bud Light Classic 75 Sunday afternoon.

The conclusion of Classic Weekend does not mean the conclusion of racing at Oswego Speedway in 2020 as clay will cover the surface for the fifth consecutive year as NAPA Auto Parts Super DIRT Week XLVIII comes to town Oct. 7-11.

Tide's Tagovailoa to reveal draft decision Monday

Published in Breaking News
Wednesday, 01 January 2020 16:34

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Alabama coach Nick Saban said Wednesday he had not been told whether quarterback Tua Tagovailoa will return to school or enter the NFL draft.

But shortly after Saban addressed the matter after Alabama's 35-16 victory over Michigan in the Vrbo Citrus Bowl, Tagovailoa tweeted: "I'll be making my decision on the 6th.. God bless and Roll Tide."

After Alabama's season-ending win in Orlando, the biggest question remaining for the Crimson Tide is how many of their draft-eligible players will come back. The list starts with Tagovailoa, who suffered a dislocated right hip in November against Mississippi State, throwing his future into question.

Despite the injury, Tagovailoa remains Alabama's top-rated prospect on Mel Kiper Jr.'s Big Board, at No. 3. Miami Dolphins owner Stephen Ross, a big Michigan donor, was in Orlando and spotted on the Michigan sideline standing near where Tagovailoa -- with crutches -- was on the field taking in pregame warmups.

The Dolphins need a quarterback, and many project they'll take Tagovailoa.

Tagovailoa had been noncommittal about his future since the injury. The deadline for underclassmen to declare for the draft is Jan. 17.

"That's a decision that I think his family needs to make," Saban said. "And I'm sure when they make that decision, they'll let everybody know. I think it's our responsibility and our job to make sure that we give them all the information from an NFL standpoint, from a medical standpoint, from a rehab standpoint. And if there is any way that he could possibly be devalued because of his injury, what are the consequences of that and how does that affect his decision and what he does in the future. But he's been a great leader for us. He's a great player on our team. He was elected captain of the team by his teammates. And we just want what's best for him.

"I think that's my job with all the players, is to make sure they get the right information from the right people about what their status is so that they can make a business decision about what they do for their future. And that's what we're going to continue to do and we're going to continue to do that for Tua and his family."

Saban was then asked whether Tagovailoa would be ready medically for this year's April draft, or whether it would benefit him to come back to school for one more season.

"I'm not a doctor," Saban said. "I haven't operated on anybody's hip before. I'm struggling to be a good coach, which is plenty to do for me. That's a question for a medical person. We have a lot of hip specialists that have given the family a lot of information and we're going to continue to do that. Our medical staff has done a great job of getting Tua to this point and his rehab is going well, and that's what we're going to be responsible to try to help him with in the short term."

The underclassmen with NFL prospects far exceed Tagovailoa. Two players, linebacker Terrell Lewis and cornerback Trevon Diggs, opted to sit out the game. But Saban said nine juniors who received draft grades decided to play against Michigan, a rarity in an era when many draft-eligible players skip bowl games to protect their status.

One of those top-rated juniors, receiver Jerry Jeudy, ended with six catches for 204 yards and one touchdown and was named the game's MVP. Saban said, "He used this opportunity to showcase his ability, so it probably even enhanced his opportunities at the next level.

"I played football all my life, so I couldn't just sit out there and watch my team play and my brothers be out there," Jeudy said. "So I just wanted to go to war with my brothers like I've been doing the whole season. I love playing football, so I just wanted to come out here and compete with my brothers."

Jeudy, rated No. 4 on Kiper's Big Board, didn't give an update on which way he is leaning. Neither did receiver DeVonta Smith, who had 56 yards receiving and a touchdown and ranks No. 23 on Kiper's Big Board.

Smith said Tagovailoa's decision won't impact his.

"Not at all," Smith said. "I'm my own person, Tua's his own person. He's going to make a decision that's best for him. I'm going to make a decision that's best for me."

Alabama received good news Tuesday when linebacker Dylan Moses opted to return to school. But then a post on the Alabama football Twitter account, showing only a row of dominoes falling, got many wondering whether this was a message about other players, such as Tagovailoa, possibly returning to school.

"I don't know what everybody else is thinking," Smith said. "I don't know what everybody else's decision is, but you just have to see."

Central Tour Confirmed For King Of The Wing

Published in Racing
Wednesday, 01 January 2020 15:00

MOUNTAIN HOME, Idaho – King of the Wing officials have announced that the King of the Wing National Sprint Car Series’ Central Tour will take place July 3-5.

In addition to a two-day show at Colorado National Speedway, the series will travel 76 miles north to Intermountain Speedway (formerly Big Country Speedway) in Cheyenne,
Wyo.

Shortly after completing the 2019 races, Colorado National Speedway promoter Jim Nordhougen invited the tour back for a return engagement on Independence Day weekend.

Friday, July 3 will kick off with a 30-lap feature event, while Saturday, July 4 will feature a 40-lap headliner.

Jason Conn set the initial track record for the series on its first trip there in 2016 at 14.013 seconds, while two-time defending series champion Eric Humphries bettered that time by almost a half second in 2019 with a 13.542-second clip during the Saturday night event.

Bobby Santos won both races at the three-eighths-mile oval in Dacono, Colo., in 2019.

The three-day weekend will conclude Sunday, July 5 at Intermountain Speedway in
Cheyenne, Wyo., the first ever trip by King of the Wing to the quarter-mile oval.

“This will be the biggest show ever to come to Intermountain Speedway,” said track promoter Perry Kinard. “Our fans are in for a thrill; these are the fastest asphalt short track
cars in the country.”

Of note, the King of the Wing Sprint Car Series will not tour in the Southeast in 2020.

“We worked hard over the last month with the Southern Sprintcar Shootout Series and several tracks in South Central Florida. Unfortunately, the clock ran out on trying to secure dates,” said series director Tom Hartsell.

“We were up against the clock, it would be unfair to our teams to announce a date with little time to prepare,” added series founder Davey Hamilton. “We are now working with
the SSSS and the South-Central (Florida) tracks to get on the schedule in 2021.”

“The rest of our 2020 schedule is coming together and we are close to finalizing tracks in the Midwest and Northwest regions,” noted King of the Wing Administration Director Bill Adams. “As soon as we confirm the tracks, announcements will be made.”

Columbus' Tortorella fined $20K for officiating rant

Published in Hockey
Wednesday, 01 January 2020 16:01

The NHL has fined Blue Jackets coach John Tortorella $20,000 for comments he made ripping the officiating after the team's overtime loss to the Blackhawks on Sunday.

The league announced the fine Wednesday. Additionally, Tortorella was assessed a conditional fine of $25,000 that the league will collect if he behaves similarly through Dec. 29 of this year. The fine money goes to the NHL Foundation.

At issue was an apparent goal by Blue Jackets defenseman Zach Werenski at the horn ending the overtime period that seemed to seal a victory over the Blackhawks.

The Blackhawks were called for a too many men on the ice penalty with around 19 seconds remaining. The clock ran down 1.1 seconds after the play was whistled dead, but the time wasn't added back. Werenski put the puck behind Chicago goalie Robin Lehner on the ensuring power-play after the buzzer sounded. Had those 1.1 seconds been put back on the clock, the goal likely would have ended the game.

Instead, Chicago won in the shootout 3-2. During that shootout, Columbus goalie Joonas Korpisalo left the ice after trying to block a shot, and Tortorella said Korpisalo will be out "weeks'' with the injury.

"(The league office in) Toronto doesn't step in, refs don't do their freaking job and now we lose a game, and we lose our goalie,'' Tortorella said in his post-game news conference Sunday, which lasted 45 seconds before he left without taking questions. "So the chain of events, if it was done right, is that we don't lose our goalie and we win the hockey game. So all the goddamn technology, right? The technology and getting things right ... the stubbornness tonight, by the officials and by the league and Toronto, however it's supposed to goddamn work, screws us. "It's ridiculous. I'm not taking any goddamn questions."

Tortorella said Monday that he regretted airing his complaints publicly instead of handling it behind the scenes.

NHL vice president of hockey operations Colin Campbell said in an email earlier this week that Tortorella's comments were "unprofessional" and "unacceptable." Campbell said in a statement that it was a judgment call by the referee, who checked with the clock operator before denying the Blue Jacket's request to restore the time. He said NHL operations didn't see the need to get involved.

In other injury news, the Blue Jackets placed rookie forward Alexandre Texier on injured reserve with a lumbar stress fracture suffered in Tuesday's win against the Panthers.

The 20-year-old Texier will be out indefinitely, the team said. He has six goals and seven assists this season, both highs among rookies on the team.

In the corresponding roster move, Columbus recalled center Justin Scott from its AHL affiliate in Cleveland.

DJ: I should have 'probably about double' the amount of wins

Published in Golf
Wednesday, 01 January 2020 10:37

As he prepares to begin his 13th season on the PGA Tour, Dustin Johnson sits at 20 career wins.

With 261 starts to his credit, Johnson has won less than 8 percent of the tournaments he’s played on Tour. Adding in starts from other tours, Johnson has won 21 times in 283 professional starts, or about 7.4 percent of the time.

Compared to most pros, that’s pretty good.

“It’s so difficult to win out here,” Johnson said Wednesday during his press conference at the Sentry Tournament of Champions, where he makes his season debut after missing the entire fall recovering left-knee surgery. “The guys out here, they’re so good. You know, any week anybody in the field can win the tournament if they play really good. You never take it for granted because you don’t win that much if you think about the amount of times you play, so winning’s still special and it’s always going to be special for me.”

However, considering his talent level, Johnson believes he should have more wins by now, especially in the majors. Johnson’s 2016 U.S. Open victory remains his lone major triumph.

“Surprised? No. … But should I have won more? I think so,” Johnson said.

How much more? “Probably about double,” he estimated.

Johnson has won at least once in all 12 seasons he’s played on Tour. After winning four times in 2016-17 and three more in 2017-18, Johnson won just once last season. He did finish second twice, running his career runner-up total on Tour to 13. He also has amassed 96 top-10s on Tour and finished second or third 24 times worldwide.

While Johnson, 35, thinks he should have 40-plus victories at this point, he also reckons he has “a few good years left in me.”

“I know what I’m capable of and I know what it takes to win out here,” he said, “so for me a successful year would be obviously winning three or four times and competing in all the majors, putting myself in positions to win golf tournaments every week.”

Xhaka wants to remain at Arsenal, says Arteta

Published in Soccer
Wednesday, 01 January 2020 16:16

Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta has said Granit Xhaka will stay at the club after the Swiss midfielder produced a gritty performance to help his side to a 2-0 win over Manchester United on Wednesday.

Xhaka was in the firing line earlier in the season after he reacted furiously to fans booing him when he was substituted in a 2-2 draw at home to Crystal Palace in October.

The incident led to him being stripped of the captaincy and also saw him left out of the side by Arteta's predecessor Unai Emery for a month.

Xhaka has started six of Arsenal's last eight league games but his agent said last week that the 27-year-old was targeting a move to Bundesliga side Hertha Berlin.

Arteta, however, said the midfielder has told him he wants to remain in north London, also praising him for his performance against United, which was Arsenal's first win in five matches and took them up to 10th in the standings.

"I think he's going to stay. I really like him. If we get him on board he can be a tremendous player for the football club," the Spanish coach told a news conference.

"I love the way he is, the way he lives his profession. He is a great football player. Today he was excellent at cutting out passes and he made a lot of great passes. I like how focused he is, he's willing to learn."

Arteta endured a difficult home debut, with Arsenal conceding two late goals to lose 2-1 to Chelsea on Sunday, but he was pleased to get off the mark and praised his players for how they reacted against United.

"I am very pleased with the performance and even more with the result. I said to the players what you transmit to the fans is up to you," he said.

"I want to say thank you so much to the fans because of the energy they brought."

Arsenal see off Man United, but both have far to go

Published in Soccer
Wednesday, 01 January 2020 16:13

LONDON -- Manchester United arrived at the Emirates with hope and left fielding more questions, while Arsenal turned up with trepidation but began the New Year with a bang.

It should have been no surprise that a battle between two inconsistent teams should throw up plenty of surprises. Arsenal won 2-0, their first victory at home since October and United lost to big-six opposition for the first time this season.

Mikel Arteta has his first win as manager while Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was left to wonder how his team could have again taken a step backwards after the positivity of Christmas victories over Newcastle and Burnley.

It was after a 2-0 defeat at the Emirates last season that the wheels began to fall off for Solskjaer, ending a run of 12 Premier League games unbeaten after taking over from Jose Mourinho. United would only win twice again all season.

Plenty has changed in nine months since. Arsenal have sacked a manager and appointed a new one while Solskjaer has allowed players come and go. But in many respects things are still the same as they were then. These are two clubs treading water until what they hope is a brighter future can begin. Both are already looking ahead to the summer and the chance to bridge the gap with the best teams in the division. Just as in March, it was the Arsenal fans who again left the Emirates with optimism.

Arteta's Arsenal are already playing with a plan and a purpose and the doom and gloom created by a run of one win in 15 games has been temporarily lifted.

"I said to the players, it is what you transmit [to the fans]," said Arteta. "If it's positive, they will be positive, if it's negative, they will be negative. They are here to support."

For United and Solskjaer it was more of the same. Momentum earned with back-to-back wins against Newcastle and Burnley undone by a chastening defeat.

Next up for Arsenal and United are FA Cup ties against Leeds United and Wolves, respectively. It is anyone's guess what might happen. In the league, their hopes of finishing in the top four rest on whether they can string together a run of wins but it is a long time since either did that.

United have not won three league games in a row since February. Arsenal have been waiting since October 2018. On this showing Arsenal look more likely.

And as the New Year kicked off in north London, it was Solskjaer's side who began as the form team but you would never have guessed. United's start was so bad that their only killer pass of the first 45 minutes was from David De Gea to Nicolas Pepe to give the Arsenal forward the chance to hit the post from 20 yards.

By that time the visitors could have already been 4-0 down and it was only down to sheer luck and Arsenal's poor finishing that they went in at half-time having only conceded twice. Pepe got the first on eight minutes after Harry Maguire had made sure Sead Kolasinac was onside to cross from the left. The second came when Sokratis Papastathopoulos stabbed in from close range after Alexandre Lacazette had been left unmarked to flick on Pepe's corner from the right.

In between, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang volleyed over after Pepe had left Luke Shaw in a heap on the floor, Lacazette turned Maguire in the box but made a mess of his finish and Lucas Torreira shot wide from the edge of the area while Fred and Nemanja Matic were still wondering where the Arsenal midfielder had gone.

Buoyant at Burnley, all over the place at Arsenal -- this is Manchester United this season. A new year, but the same problems. Solskjaer does not know which team will turn up. Only Liverpool earned more Premier League points than United in December but this was a display that brought back memories of Bournemouth and Watford.

Arsenal, meanwhile, had conceded at least twice at the Emirates in each of their past five fixtures in all competitions -- their longest run since December 1965 -- and yet were able to keep United out. At Burnley, United looked comfortable in keeping a first clean sheet away from home for 14 matches, but here they looked devoid of any organisation or confidence.

That was partly because of how well Arsenal played. Arteta wants his to team to rush and press and Solskjaer admitted afterwards United had struggled to cope.

"They were the better team," said the United boss. "They were very aggressive."

"The challenge is to maintain it." said Arteta, pointedly, while accepting that the physical demands he has placed on his new players are already taking a toll.

Consistency still eludes Solskjaer, who said: "We always want to build on performances we've had but I can't fault the effort or the drive. It's a hard period. We've been on a good run but we didn't have enough today."

Solskjaer has previously suggested he is already planning for next season while the summer will be the first chance Arteta has to make wholesale changes. Until then the challenge for both men is to eek enough out of their squads to ensure rollercoaster campaigns end with hope their clubs are finally moving in the right direction.

Orlando Magic forward Jonathan Isaac suffered a hyperextended left knee during Wednesday's game at Washington, the team announced.

He will undergo an MRI on Thursday in Orlando and then be re-evaluated.

Isaac's legs got tangled as he drove to the basket at 9:57 of the first quarter and he crumpled to the floor, clutching his knee. He was taken off the court on a stretcher.
