Jonny Gray: Scotland lock nears Exeter Chiefs move

Published in Rugby
Wednesday, 01 January 2020 12:47

Glasgow lock Jonny Gray is expected to join Scotland team-mate Stuart Hogg at Exeter Chiefs next season.

Gray, 25, is set to leave Scotstoun when his contract expires at the end of the campaign, with the Premiership leaders his likely destination.

Having lost Hogg, Finn Russell, Josh Strauss and other key players in recent seasons, Warriors will embark on a major recruitment drive for next term.

They have agreed a deal to re-sign Leone Nakarawa until the summer.

The Fiji lock, 31, has been a free agent since being sacked by Racing 92 for returning late from the Rugby World Cup.

Despite being courted by clubs in France and England, he has chosen to return to Glasgow, where he excelled in a three-year stint until 2016.

The off-loading lock was pivotal in Warriors' run to the 2015 Pro12 title - their first and only major honour.

Gray, capped 55 times, was heavily linked with a move to Bristol Bears as his previous deal ran down in 2017, but opted to remain with his home-town club.

A former Warriors co-captain, he has made over 100 appearances in seven years for Dave Rennie's side, and has become renowned for his relentless work-rate and extremely high tackle counts.

Joining Hogg, who left Glasgow at the end of last term, at Sandy Park would offer him the chance to play for Rob Baxter's meticulously built winning machine who have featured in four successive Premiership finals, lifting the trophy in 2017.

Chiefs have won all four of their European Champions Cup matches so far this term, powering past Glasgow in Devon. The Pool 2 leaders visit Glasgow on 11 January.

Gray's departure would leave incoming head coach Danny Wilson a major hole in his pack, with the back-row understood to be an area where the new man is particularly eager to strengthen.

Marco Andretti To Test TQ Midget Again In Allentown

Published in Racing
Wednesday, 01 January 2020 14:00

ALLENTOWN, Pa. – Third-generation IndyCar Series driver Marco Andretti, the son of Michael Andretti and grandson of Mario Andretti, will demonstrate his driving talents inside the PPL Center on Jan. 4 when he shakes down a TQ midget.

Andretti, a 14-time Indianapolis 500 qualifier, will sign autographs for fans during the on track Fan Fest between 5:30 and 6:30 p.m., followed by some hot laps around the arena floor speedway prior to the start of the racing program at 7 p.m.

Those with free Fan Fest tickets will be allowed on to the racing floor of the arena to get a close up look at all the race cars competing that night as well as collect autographs.

These free Fan Fest tickets are available by clicking the “Fan Fest Option” when ordering tickets online or when purchasing them at the box office.

Andretti drove friend Kyle Lick’s TQ Midget for the first time two years ago inside the PPL Center and impressed onlookers. He’ll be back behind the wheel of Lick’s No. 8 on Saturday, prior to Lick driving it in the competitive program that will follow.

“I didn’t know what to expect but the car was very comfortable once I got it up to speed,” Andretti remarked after the Jan. 5, 2018 test. “I’d like to drive in one of these races, but I have contracts that don’t allow me to do that.”

Andretti noted at the time that the power-to-weight ratio of a TQ to an Indy car is approximately the same.

Andretti is a veteran of 14 Indianapolis 500s, with his best finish coming in his rookie year of 2006, when he was second to Sam Hornish Jr. He was third in 2008, 2010 and 2014.

Marco has two career NTT IndyCar Series victories, first at Sonoma (Calif.) Raceway in 2006 and again at Iowa Speedway in 2011.

TQ midget racing and Indoor Auto Racing competition are nothing new to the Andretti family. Marco’s grandfather Mario won a TQ event inside New Jersey’s Teaneck Armory in 1962. He also won in the TQ Midgets outdoors at New Jersey’s Pine Brook Stadium before embarking on his legendary, internationally-known Hall of Fame career.

Marco began racing in go-karts at the former Flemington (N.J.) Speedway, on an infield road course. He quickly advanced to become the youngest-ever Indy car driver (at that time) at the age of 19, as a teammate to his father Michael.

The Indoor Auto Racing Series fueled by VP Race Fuels opens its 2020 season Friday and Saturday inside the PPL Center in downtown Allentown, Pa.

Wild to host 2021 Winter Classic at Target Field

Published in Hockey
Wednesday, 01 January 2020 13:29

DALLAS -- The persistence finally paid off for the Minnesota Wild, who were announced as the host of the 2021 NHL Winter Classic at Target Field in Minneapolis against an opponent that has yet to be determined.

The NHL has been holding outdoor games since 2008, but the Wild have appeared in only one: a 6-1 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks at TCF Bank Stadium in Minneapolis on Feb. 21, 2016.

"[Wild owner] Craig Leipold has been ... to say 'persistent' would be a gross understatement, about getting a Winter Classic," said NHL commissioner Gary Bettman at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas on Wednesday. "We're excited to go. I imagine the temperature there is about 30 degrees cooler than it is here right now. But it should make for a great experience for the state of Hockey."

Target Field is home to the Minnesota Twins, and has a capacity of 38,544 for baseball games.

This is the second year in a row that the NHL has named the site of the Winter Classic without specifying the opponent. The Nashville Predators were announced as the Dallas Stars' opponent for the 2020 Classic weeks after the Cotton Bowl was revealed as the site.

As previously reported by ESPN, the Blackhawks, St. Louis Blues, Colorado Avalanche and Winnipeg Jets are in the mix as potential opponents.

The Blues appear to be the front-runner to face the Wild, having won the Stanley Cup last season. The Blues will host the NHL All-Star Game later this month. The Jets are the closest opponent geographically, but only two Canadian teams have ever appeared in the Winter Classic -- the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Montreal Canadiens. Chicago has made the most appearances (six) in NHL outdoor games, last appearing in the 2019 Winter Classic.

"Let the speculation begin," said Bettman, who said a decision would come in the next few months. "It's not a one-shot decision based on one factor. We look at a whole host of things: rivalries, who's playing well, geography. Will some teams travel better than others to a particular market."

Speaking of fans who travel, Bettman praised the more than 20,000 Predators fans who made the trip to Dallas for the Cotton Bowl Classic and said the NHL is working to get Nashville an outdoor game.

"We've been focused on trying to get an outdoor game in Nashville. We're not going to point fingers at anybody, but it's been difficult logistically in terms of when we might want to schedule. But I would like to see an outdoor game in Nashville's future at some point," he said.

Morikawa returns 'home' to Kapalua with fond childhood memories

Published in Golf
Wednesday, 01 January 2020 08:41

There was nothing else on Collin Morikawa's mind following his win last summer at the Barracuda Championship. Just happiness.

But not long after did he begin thinking about all the perks that came with being a PGA Tour winner, one of which was a spot in this week's Sentry Tournament of Champions at the Plantation Course. Unlike many of the stops on Tour, Morikawa has a track record at Kapalua.

"I played it when I was like 9 [years old], so it's been a while," Morikawa said. "I don't remember really anything from what I played it when I was nine. I just remember sitting right outside the clubhouse taking a family picture, and that's about it."

Morikawa's paternal grandparents were born in Hawaii, on Maui to be exact. He's got plenty of cousins, aunts and uncles who still live in the islands, and he made many trips back during his childhood.

"It just feels so relaxing, so much like home, and it's just such a good place to be," said Morikawa, who is making his first start since finishing T-22 at the Zozo Championship in October.

A few years ago, Morikawa came to Hawaii for New Years and recalls seeing the tournament courtesy cars, thinking "maybe one day I'm going to be that player" in one of those cars.

"It happens this year that I'm over here with a courtesy car driving around whether it be Lahaina, Sun Street, whatever, and I'm one of those players now," Morikawa said. "So it's kind of come full circle where as a little kid I'd look up, see these guys in these cars and now we're here."

Fowler sports matching pineapple-print outfit, bucket hat

Published in Golf
Wednesday, 01 January 2020 09:08

Nothing says "new year" like Rickie Fowler pushing the boundaries of golf apparel.

In each of the past two seasons, Fowler began his year by wearing button-up, untucked Hawaiian-style shirts. This week, Fowler will make his 2020 debut at the Sentry Tournament of Champions sporting another style of button-up.

The look is part of Puma's latest collection, Island Time, which features two signature prints inspired by the tropical vibes of Hawaii. Fowler wore the pineapple-print Islands Shirt during Wednesday's pro-am.

However, the shirt wasn't the only noticeable fashion statement made by Fowler, who also wore matching shorts. And while he typically sports a flat-billed hat and wore one on the course, Fowler traded that in for the collection's reversible bucket hat for his press conference.

Fowler will debut several other Puma collections this year, including at the Farmers Insurance Open, Masters, The Players, PGA Championship and U.S. Open.

4/10 Maguire among Man United's strugglers

Published in Soccer
Wednesday, 01 January 2020 14:24

Manchester United went into Wednesday's contest against Arsenal coming off two convincing wins, but that was far from clear judging by their start at the Emirates.

It took just eight minutes for the Gunners to take the lead, when Nicolas Pepe found himself in acres of space in the United box and finished off his chance. The performance level didn't improve throughout the first half, something United were made to pay for just before the break, when Alexandre Lacazette's flick from a corner forced a save from David De Gea, which saw the ball fall to Sokratis Papastathopoulos for a chance that he couldn't miss.

There was an improvement made in the second half as the Red Devils prevented any more goals going in, but they failed to give Bernd Leno any significant tests, Ultimately, it ended with a deflating 2-0 defeat.

Positives

It's hard to take any real positives from the first half because of how poor the performance was. However, a small slice of encouragement can be taken from the fact that there was an improvement made in the second, with the team actually giving Arsenal a reminder that they had a game to play.

Negatives

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer would have been keen for his side to get off to a quick start, but the early defending was poor. They really struggled to get any sort of hold on the game, feeling more like a supporting act in The Arsenal Show at the Emirates than a genuine challenger at times in the opening period. Even when they were on top, Leno wasn't tested too much.

Manager rating out of 10

5 -- It wasn't hard, but United did look better at the beginning of the second half than they had in the first, so Solskjaer must have said something productive at half-time. His decision to take off Jesse Lingard was a good one, although it can be argued that he should have made it even earlier. Overall, his team was outclassed and deserved to lose.

Player ratings (1-10; 10 = best. Players introduced after 70 minutes get no rating)

GK David De Gea, 5 -- It would be harsh to blame him for either goal. The Spain international got away with some questionable distribution from his feet on a couple of occasions.

DF Aaron Wan-Bissaka, 6 -- His battle with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was an intriguing one, although the Gabon international got away from him a few more times than he would have liked. Wan-Bissaka was one of few United players who maintained a respectable level of performance throughout.

DF Victor Lindelof, 6 -- Was unlucky for Sokratis' goal, as the ball bounced off him and into the Greek defender's path. Was unable to do much to ease United's struggles, despite producing some solid pieces of defending.

DF Harry Maguire, 4 -- He was very clumsy in his defending far too often. Had a chance to get a goal back towards the end of the first half but provided a tame effort.

DF Luke Shaw, 5 -- Was completely oblivious to Pepe's presence for the first goal and struggled to deal with the Ivorian throughout the first half. He did make an improvement in the second.

MF Fred, 4 -- His passing was really poor at times and he looked very ineffective throughout the game, making some sloppy attempts to win the ball back.

MF Nemanja Matic, 4 -- It would be easy to forget he was on the pitch at points during the first half, as Arsenal played the ball around the Serbian and his teammates. He made a definite improvement in the second half.

MF Jesse Lingard, 3 -- His performance was simply shocking, as characterised by his wastefulness going forward, poor passing and rash attempts at defending. He was eventually put out of his misery in the 58th minute.

FW Daniel James, 5 -- He did stretch Sead Kolasinac at times and showed plenty of energy, but struggled to have much of an impact on the game. Was replaced by Mason Greenwood before the hour mark.

FW Anthony Martial, 5 -- There was a clear effort being made to create and make something happen for his team, but it just didn't come off for him in the end.

FW Marcus Rashford, 4 -- He cut a very frustrated figure, as Ainsley Maitland-Niles marshalled him very well. The England international struggled to make any real impact.

Substitutes

MF Andreas Pereira, 4 -- Replaced Lingard in the 58th minute and hit the side netting with one of United's biggest chances of the game.

FW Mason Greenwood, 5 -- Replaced James in the 58th minute and provided a few bright moments.

MF Juan Mata, N/R -- Replaced Matic in the 81st minute and played a good ball into the box that Rashford failed to make the most of.

9/10 Arteta masterminds first win as Arsenal boss

Published in Soccer
Wednesday, 01 January 2020 14:20

Arsenal secured their first Premier League win under new manager Mikel Arteta tonight as they beat Manchester United 2-0 at the Emirates. Nicolas Pepe was able to give his side the lead less than 10 minutes into the game before Sokratis Papastathopoulos made it two just before half-time, with United being unable to hit back in the second half.

Positives

This was the most polished Arsenal performance we've seen in quite some time. They were playing liquid football at times but they combined it with the sort of gritty determination that you need to succeed and establish yourself as a real top-six contender. They were composed on the ball, too, which is more than can be said for so many of their teams across the last decade.

Negatives

There was an element of overconfidence that snuck into Arsenal's game which so nearly cost them several times. They looked more secure at the back but the nerves always seem to creep into their game as the minutes tick by, regardless of whether or not they're punished for it. They may have been clinical, but they could've had quite a few more if they were all at the races.

Manager rating out of 10

9 - Mikel Arteta seems to be really inspiring this team towards bigger and better things. He set the starting XI up with a really nice formation and structure, and the passion with which they were fighting for every ball was clear to see. His changes were daring and, in many ways, timed to perfection, which showcases the sort of potential he has as manager.

Player ratings (1-10; 10 = best. Players introduced after 70 minutes get no rating)

GK Bernd Leno, 7 - Bounced back from his mistake in the loss against Chelsea with a more composed performance, reaffirming why he's one of the best goalkeepers in the league.

DF Ainsley Maitland-Niles, 7 - His physicality and maturity on the ball has improved substantially over the course of the last few weeks.

DF Sokratis Papastathopoulos, 9 - Put in a really, really strong showing defensively and capped it off with a thundering goal to give the Gunners a 2-0 lead.

DF David Luiz, 9 - One of his best performances in an Arsenal shirt. Looked calm, confident and assured and didn't stray too far up the pitch.

DF Sead Kolasinac, 6 - Needs to work on his timing at the back but when moving forward he's able to add an entirely different dynamic to Arsenal's game. Played a leading role in the first goal.

MF Lucas Torreira, 8 - Looks like a different player under the tutelage of Arteta with great timing, stern tackles and pinpoint accuracy.

MF Granit Xhaka, 7 - Still needs to watch his temper but reassures this midfield unlike many other players within Arsenal's ranks.

MF Nicolas Pepe, 8 - Slotted home the opening goal of the game nicely and whipped in a great corner for Arsenal's second.

MF Mesut Ozil, 7 - Strong tracking back, pulled the strings as an attacking midfielder and rarely put a foot wrong all game long.

FW Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, 5 - Had a quiet and somewhat questionable day at the office from his finishing to his final ball.

FW Alexandre Lacazette, 6 - Busted a gut darting around the pitch and refused to give up, even though he couldn't quite grab himself a goal.

Substitutes

DF Bukayo Saka, 6 - Drifted back into a defensive stance when coming on and looked incredibly competent and assured in doing so.

MF Matteo Guendouzi, N/A -- Will continue to grow as he gets older but looks to be a step behind some of his competitors in the middle of the park right now.

MF Reiss Nelson, 5 - Was pretty quiet and had too many starring roles around him to really shine in any way.

Crimson Tide WR Ruggs in concussion protocol

Published in Breaking News
Wednesday, 01 January 2020 13:08

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Alabama receiver Henry Ruggs III is in the concussion protocol after a hard landing in which his helmet hit the turf at the Vrbo Citrus Bowl, Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban said after the game.

Ruggs, who had two receptions for 27 yards in Alabama's 35-16 victory over Michigan, dove for a deep third-quarter pass from Mac Jones and tumbled hard, hitting his helmet on the turf. He stayed down for a few minutes before Alabama personnel helped him off the field. He later walked to the locker room for further evaluation.

Including the bowl game, he has 40 receptions for 746 yards and seven touchdowns. Ruggs missed the Western Carolina game on Nov. 23 after injuring his ribs the previous weekend against Mississippi State.

Ruggs, a junior, is one of several draft-eligible Alabama players who decided to play in the bowl game. He said earlier this week that he would make a decision about his future after the game.

ESPN's Mel Kiper Jr. has Ruggs rated the No. 13 overall NFL draft prospect on the latest Big Board.

Source: Garrett to meet with Jones again Thurs.

Published in Breaking News
Wednesday, 01 January 2020 14:16

Jason Garrett will continue his discussions with Dallas Cowboys ownership about his future with the team on Thursday, a source confirmed to ESPN.

Garrett concluded a second meeting with team owner/general manager Jerry Jones and his son Stephen, Dallas' executive vice president, on Tuesday, with no announcement of a resolution.

Garrett's contract expires Jan. 14, but after Sunday's 47-16 season-ending win over Washington, Jerry Jones said he did not have a timetable for a decision. He did not seem to care that other teams, particularly in his division, would have a chance to start the hiring process before the Cowboys do if he opts to move on from Garrett.

Garrett is 85-67 as Cowboys coach but has won only two playoff games since 2010. He has had only one losing season (4-12 in 2015), but Dallas' 8-8 record in 2019 was the fourth .500 finish of his career. He entered the season knowing he had to win, but could not get the Cowboys into the playoffs.

Garrett has worked for the Cowboys for 13 years, including 9½ as head coach, and has a close relationship with Jones. On Sunday, the owner said working with Garrett, a former Cowboys quarterback, has been "a source of pride for me. It's an honor to have worked with him and to be working with him."

The Cowboys have not had a full-blown coaching search since 2007, after Bill Parcells retired. Jones interviewed a number of candidates back then, including Garrett, before hiring Wade Phillips.

The Dallas Morning News was first to report the Thursday meeting.
