The victory is McIntosh’s fourth in the annual Hangover event.

Cory Hedgecock finished third, followed by Riley Hickman and Logan Roberson.

Russia hands Canada 6-0 loss at junior worlds

Published in Hockey

OSTRAVA, Czech Republic -- Russia scored three opening-period goals on the way to stunning Canada 6-0 at the world junior hockey championship on Saturday.

Canada forward Alexis Lafreniere, who is projected to be the No. 1 pick in the 2020 NHL draft, also left the ice with the help of his teammates after picking up what seemed to be an injury to his left leg in the second period.

It was the worst defeat for Canada since the tournament became official in 1977. In the 1976 edition, when it was an invitational event, the team was thrashed 17-1 by Sweden.

"They played a great game," Canada captain Barrett Hayton said. "We weren't good enough. We got behind early again tonight and it's tough to come back. We have to be better, and we will be."

Alexander Khovanov, Pavel Dorofeyev, Nikita Rtishev, Nikita Alexandrov, Yegor Sokolov and Grigori Denisenko scored as Russia recovered from a 4-3 loss to the Czech Republic hosts in the opening game on Thursday.

Khovanov, Alexandrov and Denisenko added an assist each.

Goaltender Amir Miftakhov stopped 28 shots for the shutout in the Group B game.

Khovanov set the pace, scoring 1:44 into the game with the help of a lucky bounce off goaltender Nicolas Daws. Dorofeyev and Rtishev then put the Russian team in command with two more goals in the opening period.

Canada pulled off Daws for Joel Hofer after Alexandrov made it 4-0, 2:18 into the second period.

Daws allowed four goals from 18 shots.

But Hofer couldn't stop Sokolov and Denisenko increasing the Russian lead to 6-0.

Canada, which beat the U.S. 6-4 to open the tournament, next faces Germany on Monday.

All five teams in Group B have one win and a loss after two games.

In Group A, Sweden tops the standings after beating Switzerland 5-2 with Samuel Fagemo scoring twice.

Finland got its title defense back on track by routing Slovakia 8-1 in Group A with Aku Raty netting two goals. The Finns lost 3-2 in overtime to Sweden in their previous game.

The host Czechs were upset 4-3 by Germany in Group B, with Dominik Bokk scoring twice for the Germans.

Pogba's absence? He 'didn't feel right,' says Ole

Published in Soccer
Saturday, 28 December 2019 14:58

BURNLEY, England -- Paul Pogba was left out of the Manchester United squad to face Burnley because he "didn't feel right," according to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, but the midfielder should be available to return against Arsenal.

Pogba did not travel to Turf Moor ahead of United's 2-0 victory despite playing 45 minutes against Newcastle on Boxing Day. Solskjaer said the Frenchman was held back to give him more recovery time after more than two months on the sidelines with a foot injury but suggested the 26-year-old could feature at the Emirates on Wednesday.

"He's been out for a long while and he didn't feel right," said Solskjaer. "We'll just have to take our time and get him ready for next time.

"When you've been out for such a while it's always going to take time until you're 100%.

"He wasn't ready today because he's not had too many games and he's had two in a few days and he just needed another day's recovery.

"Today I felt Fred and Nemanja [Matic] played really well. I don't think many of you would have thought three or four months ago Fred would have been one of the best players at Burnley at Turf Moor but he was excellent."

Solskjaer will hope to have Pogba available to play Arsenal with Scott McTominay facing a spell on the sidelines with a knee injury. The Scotland international damaged knee ligaments during the win over Newcastle and left Old Trafford on crutches.

"I wouldn't expect him to be back within a few weeks," said Solskjaer. "I don't think we'll see him, it'll be more than that. But he's always proved before if you give him three weeks he's back in two, but I don't know if it's three or four weeks. It might be something like this. We've just got to find a way through it."

BURNLEY, England -- Manchester United ended 2019 with a 2-0 Premier League win over Burnley and in doing so ensured Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will begin the most important 12 months of his managerial career on a high.

Victory at Turf Moor means United will start the new year within touching distance of the top four, but it is how 2020 unfolds that will tell you everything you need to know about Solskjaer and whether he is the right man for the hot seat at Old Trafford. The jury is still out.

This is a team capable of beating Tottenham and Manchester City and losing to Watford. Back-to-back wins over Newcastle and Burnley is an encouraging way to end the year, but the supporters travelling to Arsenal in four days' time will do so still not knowing what to expect. This is where United are, but if the ultimate goal is to challenge for the title and the Champions League, they cannot continue to be here.

In 12 months, most of the lingering questions should have been answered. Is Solskjaer a good manager who has been hampered by a thin squad? Or is it the Norwegian, rather than his players, who lacks the tools?

By December 2020, he will have had the benefit of another summer transfer window. The gaps in the squad -- most notably in midfield and up front -- should have been filled and those not up to scratch should have gone.

This is a team in transition, but Solskjaer and the club cannot hide behind that indefinitely. Talk of visions and plans has been welcomed after six and a half years of shambolic recruitment, but it is only tangible results that keep wolves from the door. There need to be considerable strides taken in the next year.

Against Burnley, there was enough to suggest it is possible.

Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford scored again. The defence, anchored by £85 million Harry Maguire, kept a clean sheet for the first time in 15 league games. Brandon Williams, 19, was good and so was Andreas Pereira. David De Gea showed he is still one of the best goalkeepers in the world with a terrific late save to deny Phil Bardsley an equaliser.

Even in a state of flux, United were too good for Sean Dyche's side.

"We want to keep the momentum going," said Solskjaer afterwards. "Two wins now and good response after the disappointing game against Watford. We have not lost a game straight after we have lost another one, so happy with that. Good response from the players, they are learning.

"We're getting better and improving. We've had too many draws early on and it has put us in position we're in. We've only lost once each month, and if you go a month between every time you lose, it's not bad for a team that's learning. Tonight was a big step forward anyway."

United had to wait until the final minutes of the first half to score, but it was only by sheer fortune that Burnley managed to hang on that long. Rashford drilled a free kick at Nick Pope from 40 yards before hitting the base of the post with a whipped shot from inside the penalty area.

Martial thought he had done enough to open the scoring only for his shot to be cleared off the line by Bardsley. Williams' cross from the left then evaded everyone when it only needed a touch into the net.

A minute before the break and Burnley reached breaking point. Pereira's ferocious pressing caught Charlie Taylor off guard and the Brazilian rolled a beautifully weighted pass towards Martial, who scored his 10th of the season.

Pereira has taken more than his fair share of criticism from some United fans this season, but he has been impressive against Colchester and Newcastle this month, and he was again here. He looks far more comfortable as the No. 10 with the insurance of two others behind him.

It is easy to forget he is still only 23 and is yet to make 50 Premier League appearances. He has work to do to show that he is entirely at home at this level but the flashes of brilliance are becoming more and more frequent.

The scoreline would have been more comprehensive had Martial taken two second-half chances, both laid on by Pereira. And only De Gea's save from Bardsley and Rashford's 16th goal in his last 19 appearances for club and country, with the last kick of the game, made the result safe.

It is this type of performance, replicated again and again, home and away, against big teams and small, that will keep Solskjaer safe in 2020. He is facing a crucial year but it will, at least, start with hope.

Peter Siddle has announced his retirement from international cricket after a career that spanned 11 years.

Siddle, 35, played 67 Tests taking 221 wickets at 30.66, his last match coming in the final Test of this year's Ashes series in England. He was brought back into the squad for the current Boxing Day Test against New Zealand but did not make the final XI and told his team-mates of his decision before play on the fourth day.

In white-ball cricket he played 20 ODIs, earning a surprise recall earlier this year, and two T20Is.

Sources: Rivera is primary candidate for Redskins

Published in Breaking News
Saturday, 28 December 2019 12:00

Multiple league sources believe former Carolina Panthers coach Ron Rivera is a primary candidate for the Washington Redskins job.

Several people involved in league hirings say Rivera has been strongly considered, which a team source also believes to be the case while adding that ownership has been quiet about its plans.

Rivera, who will turn 58 on Jan. 7, is a minority candidate, so a team can hire him now without having to satisfy the Rooney Rule elsewhere in the process.

But Rivera, who led Carolina to three NFC South titles and a Super Bowl appearance in nine seasons, is expected to have options with multiple teams. The Panthers fired Rivera on Dec. 3 after a four-game losing streak. He went 76-63-1 during his tenure.

After his firing, Rivera said he "absolutely" planned to continue coaching.

"My intent is to coach again. I love coaching," Rivera said. "Not just coaching because it's about winning football games, but coaching because you have an opportunity to impact young men and people. And that's what I want to do."

It's uncertain whether Rivera has formally interviewed with Washington, which fired Jay Gruden on Oct. 7 after an 0-5 start.

This offseason is expected to feature a lighter coaching carousel than past years, with as few as four or five openings by next week. What's considered a weak coordinator pool overall helps the case of past head coaches such as Rivera and former Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy.

Source: Ravens, Peters reach $42M extension

Published in Breaking News
Saturday, 28 December 2019 13:18

OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- The Baltimore Ravens struck a three-year, $42 million contract extension with cornerback Marcus Peters on Saturday, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Peters has a made a huge impact during the best season in franchise history since being acquired from the Los Angeles Rams in October. He would've been the top free agent after the season for the Ravens (13-2), who have the best record in the NFL and have clinched the top seed in the AFC playoffs.

The extension includes $32 million guaranteed, which is 76% of total contract, a source told Schefter. It will pay Peters $20.5 million in the first year and allow him to hit the free-agent market when he's 29.

Baltimore acquired Peters from the Rams on Oct. 15 in exchange for a 2020 fifth-round pick and linebacker Kenny Young.

The best ball hawk for the Ravens since Ed Reed, Peters has been a key figure in Baltimore's defensive resurgence by returning two interceptions for touchdowns and breaking up a last-minute pass in Buffalo to clinch a playoff berth.

With Peters, who was selected to his third Pro Bowl this season, the Ravens have allowed the fewest points and second-fewest yards in the league.

Since entering the NFL in 2015, Peters leads the league with 27 interceptions and seven defensive touchdowns. Baltimore had targeted Peters in that draft before he was taken by Kansas City at No. 18 overall, eight spots before the Ravens.

By keeping Peters and Marlon Humphrey together, the Ravens have one of the best young cornerback tandems in the NFL. Humphrey could be in line for an extension this offseason.

This continues a trend by first-year general manager Eric DeCosta, who has said he wanted to make a stronger effort to sign players before they hit free agency. Peters is the seventh Ravens player to an extension since last offseason, joining cornerback Tavon Young, kicker Justin Tucker, guard Marshal Yanda, wide receiver Willie Snead, linebacker L.J. Fort and fullback-defensive tackle Patrick Ricard.

Sources: Marlins, OF Dickerson reach 2-year deal

Published in Baseball
Saturday, 28 December 2019 14:28

The Miami Marlins have reached an agreement with free agent outfielder Corey Dickerson on a $17.5 million, two-year contract, sources have confirmed to ESPN.

MLB Network first reported on the deal between the sides.

The 30-year-old Dickerson hit .304 with 12 homers and 59 RBIs last season for the Pittsburgh Pirates and Philadelphia Phillies, who acquired him on July 31. Dickerson had 42 extra-base hits and a .565 slugging percentage.

He becomes the front-runner to start in left field for the Marlins. Other candidates include veteran newcomer Matt Kemp, Harold Ramirez and Austin Dean.

Drafted by the Colorado Rockies in 2009, Dickerson won a Gold Glove in 2018 and was an All-Star in 2017 for the Tampa Bay Rays. He is a solid left-handed hitter with power to all fields, which made him an attractive selling point for the Phillies as well as future potential suitors.

Dickerson has a .286 career average with 190 doubles, 29 triples, 115 homers, 370 RBIs and an .832 OPS in 776 games.

Steven Berlin Rumbles With New Rage T-Rex

Published in Racing
Saturday, 28 December 2019 11:30

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Rumble in Fort Wayne racing weekend inside the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum is about much more than just the headlining national midget division.

Interspersed within are two swathes of 600cc micro sprints, several classes of quarter midgets and both caged and clone-style go-kart divisions, which often put on the tightest and closest racing of the week.

One of the notable names in this year’s karting field at the Rumble is Grafton, Ohio native Steven Berlin, who brought out a brand-new Rage Chassis No. 2 for the weekend and has found speed as he’s gone through the Senior Caged class in the three-day event.

The new kart, nicknamed T-Rex, is a fresh design from the Rage stable and one that Berlin said he’s enjoyed getting the chance to figure out.

He also enjoys the conversation that the kart’s code name has generated.

“It’s a really cool piece,” Berlin told SPEED SPORT. “The name of it actually comes from the owner’s granddaughter. Jeff Hoisington’s granddaughter loves dinosaurs and her favorite dinosaur is a T-Rex. So when he was thinking of a new chassis design and he was trying to think of a name of it, she always had a toy T-Rex and she was running around in his office … and that just popped in his head.

“I think it’s a perfect name. A lot of this stuff is new. It’s a new geometry, new chassis, new flex, new everything. There’s not anything the same from any of his old chassis. It’s working pretty well so far.”

Berlin values competing at the Rumble as one of the premier events of his season, something that he wants to play a part in every time he has the opportunity to do so.

“This is like the Super Bowl or the Daytona 500, at least for me, when it comes to the karting realm,” Berlin noted. “The competition is so close and so fierce. The difference between first place and not even making the A-main is roughly within three tenths of a second, so you have to be on top of your game every time you hit the track. If you have one bad heat race, you’re in the B-main.

“It’s very self-satisfying to know that you come in here and you race with the best of the best in the world of go-kart racing. If you can hang out with the best of the best and be competitive, that’s all you can ask for in my mind and it’s something I truly enjoy.”

While Berlin, a former Little Eldora Speedway track champion, is still seeking his first Rumble victory, going home with a trophy isn’t his sole objective this weekend. It’s been about trialing the new chassis as well to make sure all the bugs are massaged out of it going forward.

From Berlin’s eyes, that part of the puzzle is so far, so good.

“The goal for me has been just to make both A-mains, and once you’re in the show, anything can happen,” he said. “My goal driving the T-Rex was basically to shake it down and make sure everything that Jeff from Rage thought it would do actually happened, and so far it has held true to that.

“We have a few more setup changes we still want to test out, but I think that it’s more the driver trying to figure it out. I’m having fun, though. I really am.”

Eriksen 6/10 in engineering Spurs' comeback

Published in Soccer
Saturday, 28 December 2019 12:19

Tottenham Hotspur ended the calendar year with a 2-2 Premier League draw with Norwich City at Carrow Road on Saturday.

The hosts went into half-time 1-0 up thanks to a tidy finish from Mario Vrancic. Christian Eriksen curled home a free kick early in the second half to draw Spurs level, and after a calamitous own goal from Serge Aurier put Norwich back in front, Harry Kane won and converted an 82nd-minute penalty to ensure the points were shared.

Positives

You can't draw too many positives after failing to win a game that would've been identified as very winnable, but the resilience to fight back after twice falling behind certainly deserves a nod.

Negatives

In the absence of Moussa Sissoko and Harry Winks, Spurs were particularly poor when out of possession, and the lack of a destructive midfielder in the mould of Sissoko gave Norwich the encouragement they needed to impose their slick passing game through the heart of midfield. And at the risk of repetition, the manner in which Spurs are conceding goals is bordering on laughable.

Manager rating out of 10

6 -- Jose Mourinho was proactive at the interval and changed the Spurs shape to provide more support forKane, and the north Londoners were a much greater threat in the second half as a result, but work on the training pitch to improve the dodgy defence isn't working.

Player ratings (1-10; 10 = best, players introduced after 70 minutes get no rating)

GK Paulo Gazzaniga, 6 -- The keeper made a good save to deny Marco Stiepermann inside the opening 10 minutes, but could do nothing about Vrancic's tidy opener in the 18th minute, and was wrong-footed by Aurier's own goal.

DF Serge Aurier, 5 -- The Ivorian was unable to have as much influence in the final third than in recent weeks, and couldn't sort out his feet in time to prevent the ball bouncing off him and into his own net to put Norwich 2-1 up.

DF Toby Alderweireld, 6 -- Provided a brilliant long ball over the top of the Norwich defence to release Kane for an early Spurs chance, but his scruffy clearance cannoned into Aurier to put Norwich back into the lead in the second half. Booked in injury time for a late tackle.

DF Juan Foyth, 5 -- Started the game in uncertain fashion as he looked to impose himself physically on the Norwich forward line, and a poor touch inside his defensive third gifted possession to the Canaries on the way to Vrancic's opener. Replaced at half-time by Davinson Sanchez.

DF Jan Vertonghen, 5 -- The Belgian can count himself extremely fortunate that VAR denied Norwich a goal that came after the centre-half disastrously misread a long looping ball into Tottenham territory. Hooked at half-time, and replaced by Lucas Moura.

DF Ryan Sessegnon, 6 -- Would probably have found himself on the score sheet had it not been for a superb block from Norwich full-back Max Aarons, and while we didn't see a huge deal from the former Fulham man going forward, Norwich didn't have much joy down his defensive side.

MF Giovani Lo Celso, 6 -- It was an anonymous first half from the Argentine, but a lovely lobbed through ball for a disallowed Dele Alli goal in the second half was one of a handful of neat touches that suggest the loanee has something to offer this Spurs side. Taken off for Erik Lamela for the final 16 minutes.

MF Tanguy Ndombele, 5 -- The summer signing from Lyon really needs to be starting further up the pitch to have any influence. In his deep-lying role he defended poorly for Norwich's opening goal, and doesn't have the defensive instincts to effectively protect his backline.

MF Christian Eriksen, 6 -- Another Spurs midfielder who doesn't look comfortable in the heat of battle in the heart of the pitch, but provided a moment of real class as his free kick flew past Tim Krul in the Norwich goal and gave his side a pathway back into the game. Unfortunate to be booked for a coming together with Norwich sub Kenny McLean late on.

FW Dele Alli, 5 -- Horribly blazed a huge opportunity over the bar from just inside the penalty after just 11 minutes, and was unable to make the most of a brilliant Eriksen through ball when his shot was blocked early in the second half.

FW Harry Kane, 6 -- Forced an excellent save from Krul from 12 yards out after getting in behind the Norwich backline, but wasn't to be denied from the penalty spot to make the score 2-2.

Substitutes

DF Davinson Sanchez, 6 -- Gave the Spurs defence a touch more solidity at the back.

FW Lucas Moura, 6 -- A couple of bursting runs, but unable to create any meaningful opportunities, and booked for barging Aarons.

MF Erik Lamela, N/R -- Struck a swerving effort from distance that Krul was forced to tip over.
