Stewart Roars To Another Rumble Fast Time

Published in Racing
Friday, 27 December 2019 15:30

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Tony Stewart is still the king when it comes to qualifying a national midget on the concrete inside the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum.

Stewart blazed to his 13th Rumble in Fort Wayne fast time with a blistering lap of 7.723 seconds (77.690 mph) in the No. 2 Our Gang Poker VW-powered Munchkin midget around the sixth-mile concrete oval.

It marked his second straight time topping the Friday night qualifying session in Rumble competition.

Piloting the Jason Dietsch-owned Mike Streicher tribute car, Pennsylvania’s Tim Buckwalter was second-fastest in the 33-car field at 7.817 seconds (76.756 mph), followed by Stewart’s teammate and car builder Mike Fedorcak in third with a best lap of 7.876 seconds (76.181 mph) in the No. 97 Munchkin.

Former Rumble winners Jim Anderson, Derek Bischak, Justin Peck and Kyle Hamilton completed the top seven. In fact, six of the seven fastest drivers in qualifying Friday own at least one Rumble feature win.

Rumble rookie Troy DeCaire was eighth-best, followed by his two Randall Williams Motorsports teammates in Cap Henry and Joe Liguori.

John Ivy swept qualifying for the two 600cc micro sprint divisions at the Rumble on Friday, turning a best lap of 7.829 seconds () in his winged car and 8.152 seconds in his non-winged entry.

Dylan Woodling and Cap Henry followed Ivy on the winged 600 speed charts in qualifying, while Tyler Fitzpatrick and Tyler Lindsay were second and third, respectively, in non-winged 600 time trials.

Opening ceremonies for Friday’s Rumble racing program are scheduled for shortly after 7 p.m.

Kings' Fox (back) day-to-day after clean MRI

Published in Basketball
Friday, 27 December 2019 15:35

The Sacramento Kings said Friday that an MRI on point guard De'Aaron Fox's back revealed no structural damage.

Fox left the Kings' 105-104 overtime loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves in the opening quarter Thursday with what the team called back spasms. He is being listed as day-to-day.

Forward Marvin Bagley III also left Thursday's contest with a left foot injury. He will be evaluated by a foot specialist Saturday, the team said.

Fox, in his third season out of Kentucky, is averaging a career-high 17.6 points per contest this season, while shooting a career-best 46.5%. The Kings entered Friday with a 12-19 record and 1½ games out of eighth place in the Western Conference.

Source: Draft-bound Wiseman signs with agency

University of Memphis 7-footer James Wiseman -- a potential No. 1 overall pick in the 2020 NBA draft -- has signed with Excel Sports for his professional representation, a league source told ESPN.

Wiseman is ranked third in ESPN's most recent mock draft but remains a strong candidate to become the top pick in the June draft.

The formal agreement with an agent officially ends his college career, which concluded with Wiseman deciding to depart college instead of serving a 12-game suspension and repaying $11,500 in moving expenses that his college coach, Penny Hardaway, had provided his family in 2017.

Wiseman, 18, played three games for Memphis -- averaging 19.7 points on 77% shooting -- before the NCAA's suspension. With a 7-foot-5 wingspan, Wiseman has shown the ability to be a dominant presence on the offensive and defensive ends of the floor.

He will join Excel Sports, which represents many of the top players in the NBA, including Denver's Nikola Jokic, Boston's Kemba Walker and Cleveland's Kevin Love.

Wiseman will start preparing for draft straightway.

Giannis sits against Hawks due to back soreness

ATLANTA -- Giannis Antetokounmpo sat out the Milwaukee Bucks' game at Atlanta on Friday night because of back soreness.

Coach Mike Budenholzer ruled out Antetokounmpo, last season's NBA MVP and the second-leading scorer this season, before league-leading Milwaukee faced the Hawks.

"His back is something I guess would be in that category of something we manage and keep our eyes on, and sometimes it flares up," Budenholzer said. "Today it's enough that he can't play. But you're hopeful that it's not anything significant even though it is something that we kind of monitor on a regular basis."

Ersan Ilyasova started in Antetokounmpo's spot. It was too early to tell if Antetokounmpo also will sit out Saturday at Orlando.

Antetokounmpo was favoring his back while scoring 18 points and getting 14 rebounds in a loss Wednesday night at Philadelphia, but Budenholzer said the decision to hold him out was mostly precautionary.

"Except for that he's out tonight, I think he's been doing really well," Budenholzer said. "I think he's felt good and looked strong just even to kind of to the general eye test."

Antetokounmpo has missed one game this season, a home victory over New Orleans on Dec. 11 because of right quad tendon soreness. He is averaging 30.1 points and 12.9 rebounds.

Milwaukee leads the NBA with a 27-5 record.

Ryu introduced as 'next step' in Jays' title pursuit

Published in Baseball
Friday, 27 December 2019 16:38

TORONTO -- Hyun-Jin Ryu is the ace the Toronto Blue Jays needed to pair with a lineup flush with "baseball royalty."

That's the view agent Scott Boras has of the deal that brought the Korean left-hander north of the border.

Ryu agreed to join the Jays last weekend, with sources telling ESPN's Jeff Passan that the deal was for four years and $80 million. Ryu then flew in from Korea for an introductory news conference Friday, greeting a live television audience with a wide smile and a few words in each of his new home country's official languages.

"Hello, Canada," Ryu said. "Bonjour. I'm happy to be here, and I'm going to make the Toronto Blue Jays proud."

Ryu was 14-5 with a major league-best 2.32 ERA for the Los Angeles Dodgers last season. He started for the National League in his first All-Star Game and finished second in Cy Young Award voting to New York Mets ace Jacob deGrom.

Ryu's is the second-biggest free agent deal in Blue Jays history, trailing only the five-year, $82 million contract former general manager Alex Anthopoulos gave catcher Russell Martin in November 2014.

"This is the next step in what we feel is a plan to build a sustainable championship team," Blue Jays president Mark Shapiro said.

General manager Ross Atkins praised Ryu for his "insane athleticism" and his ability to get outs with different pitches in all four corners of the strike zone.

"You truly are fun to watch play," Atkins told his new ace.

Toronto needed a dependable starter to stabilize its rotation and help get the most from its crop of young talent, including four sons of former players, a group Boras regards with regal admiration.

"It was very clear from our conversations with Mark that the Blue Jays were willing to move forward and start building a base to complement the young players they have, and advance the royal youth to a level of championship play," Boras said.

Now, Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Bo Bichette, Cavan Biggio and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. have a starter they can rely on to keep them in games.

"We got one of the best pitchers in baseball," manager Charlie Montoyo said. "We're going to have a chance to win every time he takes the mound."

Toronto isn't the first place where Ryu has teamed with with a talented young core.

"When Hyun-Jin played for the Dodgers, you saw this happen with [Corey] Seager, with [Cody] Bellinger," Boras said. "We certainly expect the royal youth of the Blue Jays continues to grow at that pace."

Three or four other teams were in the hunt, Boras said, including the Dodgers, who had "competitive interest" in retaining Ryu. No suitor was more tenacious than Toronto.

"There's not a week that went by that Ross wasn't calling," Boras said.

That persistence made an impact on Ryu.

"Toronto was one that first pursued me, and continued to pursue, and that's why I'm here," he said through a translator.

Ryu is the fourth pitcher to join the Blue Jays so far this offseason. Toronto signed right-hander Tanner Roark to a $24 million, two-year deal, acquired right-hander Chase Anderson from Milwaukee, and signed Japanese right-hander Shun Yamaguchi from the Yomiuri Giants.

No starter won more than six games for Toronto in 2019, and the rotation ranked 22nd out of 30 teams with a 5.25 ERA. The Blue Jays went 67-95, finishing fourth in the AL East for the third straight season.

Ryu, who turns 33 in March, spent his first seven big league seasons with the Dodgers after coming over from South Korea and signing a $36 million, six-year contract before the 2013 season. He was effective the first two years but sat out the 2015 season and made only one appearance in 2016 because of left shoulder surgery and elbow tendinitis. He also missed time in 2017 with injuries to his left hip and foot.

Ryu reemerged with a 1.97 ERA over 15 starts in 2018 and accepted a $17.9 million qualifying offer from Los Angeles for 2019, when he threw 182 2/3 innings in 29 starts for the NL West champions.

Ryu, who wears jersey No. 99, was asked whether he was familiar with Canadian hockey icon Wayne Greztky, the last sports star to make a splash by moving between Los Angeles and Canada.

"Canada lent number 99 to LA," Boras joked. "With Hyun-Jin, we thought we'd return it back to Canada."

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

ENNIS, Texas – The Summit USRA Weekly Racing Series will be a Saturday night fixture in next year at the Big O Speedway in Ennis, Texas.

Racers in the USRA Modified, USRA Factory Stock, USRA Limited Mod and USRA Tuner divisions will compete for a stout national points fund as part of the Summit USRA Weekly Racing Series, plus lucrative regional and track points funds and strong offering of contingency awards.

Competitors at the Big O Speedway will earn points in the MSD Performance Southern Region presented by MVT.

Opening in 1985 as 85 Speedway, the popular quarter-mile semi-banked clay oval got a name change when Bridget Moon acquired the facility in 2018 from Roger Archer who operated it for the previous 21 seasons.

After many improvements to the 5,000-seat venue, the new and improved Big O Speedway opened during the final weekend of May in 2018 with a full schedule in 2019 to follow.

Now a member of the USRA family, the Big O Speedway will host an open practice at 12 noon this Saturday, Dec. 28 (weather permitting). The racing season is slated to kick off Feb. 22.

Woods, Koepka not in field at Tournament of Champions

Published in Golf
Friday, 27 December 2019 09:17

The Tournament of Champions will have 34 winners from 2019 competing next week at the Plantation Course at Kapalua, but two of last year's most notable winners will be resting at home.

Tiger Woods and Brooks Koepka have opted to skip the opening event of the new year. Woods is fresh off an exhausting and emotional week in Australia at the Presidents Cup where he captained the U.S. team to a rousing Sunday comeback to take down the Internationals. As for Koepka, he is still rehabbing his left knee he injured at the CJ Cup in October, that led him to withdraw from Woods' Presidents Cup team.

Joining Woods and Koepka as winners who did not commit by Friday's deadline are Shane Lowry, Rory McIlroy, Phil Mickelson, Francesco Molinari and Justin Rose.

However, 13 of the top 30 in last year's FedExCup standings are in the field, as are seven of the top 10 in the current FedExCup standings. In addition, 11 of the top 30 players in the Official World Golf Rankings are in the field as well, including top-10 players Jon Rahm, Justin Thomas, Dustin Johnson, Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele, who is defending his title next week at Kapalua.

Ederson 4/10 as City fall further behind Liverpool

Published in Soccer
Friday, 27 December 2019 14:49

Manchester City were subjected to their fifth defeat of the season, following a 3-2 thriller at the Molineux Stadium.

Pep Guardiola's side took the lead after 25 minutes, with VAR awarding 10-man City a penalty. While the initial spot kick was saved, Raheem Sterling was able to slot home the rebound from his second attempt, after VAR had ruled Conor Coady had illegally encroached on the first attempt. Sterling made it two in the second half, with a delicate finish from a devastating counter-attack to give City a welcomed cushion.

The away side led 2-0 against the run of the play, having lost Ederson to a red card after just 10 minutes. The lead was soon wiped out, however, with Adama Traore scoring from distance, and then assisting Raul Jimenez late on to set up a grandstand finish. There was one more twist to come as Matt Doherty popped up with a winning goal for Wolves in injury time to drop City down to third, 14 points behind leaders Liverpool.

Positives

After losing Ederson so early, it would have been easy for City's heads to drop, and for the game plan to be abandoned. However, that didn't manifest -- the visitors instead digging deep and playing well in possession -- in the first half at least. The mental resilience and fight will surely please Pep Guardiola on a day to forget for the gaffer.

Negatives

To have lost their starting goalkeeper at such a crucial stage of the season must surely take precedence over any other potential takeaway. Ederson's gung-ho goalkeeping style is so often effective, but when it goes wrong, it does so spectacularly. This mistake has, in all likelihood, handed Liverpool the Premier League title.

Manager Rating out of 10

6 -- The team selection from Guardiola included introducing Benjamin Mendy at left-back, potentially to combat the threat posed by Adama Traore. The Spanish boss had little choice but to take off Serio Aguero for Claudio Bravo, but the change appeared to have little effect, as the away side struck first from the spot. Mendy being pushed off the ball by Traore did directly allow Jiminez to equalise late on, but ultimately, the manager's game plan had to be scraped after just 10 minutes.

Player Ratings (1-10; 10 = best, players introduced after 70 minutes get no rating)

GK Ederson, 4 -- Red carded after just 10 minutes, following an all-or-nothing challenge outside the box on Jota. Rash.

DF Kyle Walker, 5 -- A difficult outing for the veteran right-back, who was tasked with endless defensive duties up against Wolves' Jonny. He struggled to deny crosses into the box in what was a very underwhelming display.

DF Nicolas Otamendi, 5 -- Rash, reckless, and partially at fault for Ederson's red -- another night to forget for the Argentine.

DF Fernandinho, 6 -- In testing circumstances, the 33-year-old was typically committed to cause, but will rue mistakes that led to his side's defeat. Aerially, he dealt with Wolves' pressure admirably, whilst also distributing the ball well when in possession.

DF Benjamin Mendy, 5 -- The Frenchman was superb defensively up against Traore in the first half. However, a calamitous mistake allowed the Wolves winger to cross for Jimenez' late equaliser. A true game of two halves for the error prone left-back.

MF Rodri, 7 -- A decent outing from the Spanish holding midfielder. Rodri was involved in all facets of the game, breaking up Wolves' attacks, before helping to launch City counters -- including a move than set up Sterling's second-half goal.

MF Kevin De Bruyne, 7 -- The Belgian was less impressive when compared to recent performances, but it was, nonetheless, a highly effective outing. Clinical passing, including an assist for Sterling's second, means that the 29-year-old can be one of the few relatively pleased with his contributions.

MF Bernardo Silva, 6 -- Playing in a much deeper role than usual, the Portuguese international was crucial in helping his side to retain the ball in the first half. From a defensive perspective, he worked hard, but was fairly ineffective.

FW Riyad Mahrez, 6 -- The Algerian winger was one of the most influential City starters, notably winning the away side's controversial early penalty. Coming after Ederson's red card, it was a huge moment for Pep's side -- and while his theatrics going to ground shouldn't be encouraged, his impact on the game was undeniable.

FW Sergio Aguero, 6 -- Lasted just 10 minutes, after acting as Guardiola's sacrificial lamb following Ederson's sending off.

FW Raheem Sterling, 8 -- The England international was persistently lively, troubling Wolves with dangerous movement in the absence of a recognised striker. His smart work was rewarded with a pair of goals, scoring on the rebound from his retaken spot kick, before delicately chipping Rui Patricio for his second.

Substitutes

GK Claudio Bravo, 5 -- Came on early to replace the dismissed Ederson. As we have come to expect, the stand-in keeper's distribution left much to be desired -- as did his handling of Wolves' free kicks.

DF Eric Garcia, 6 -- The young Spaniard replaced the most hated man in Wolverhampton, that being Mahrez, at half time. Playing as a third centre-back, Garcia equipped himself admirably in trying conditions.

MF Ilkay Gundogan, N/R -- Replaced De Bruyne as Guardiola looked to hold his side's 2-1 advantage. Ultimately, they did not and some of that blames falls on the German.
