Brogdon on Bucks exit: Pacers valued me more

Published in Basketball
Sunday, 22 December 2019 16:48

MILWAUKEE -- Despite his returning to Fiserv Forum donning a No. 7 Indiana Pacers uniform, there were no hard feelings toward Malcolm Brogdon in the former place he once called home.

Brogdon might have dipped from Milwaukee to Indiana, after a sign-and-trade in July, but he still received a warm reception from Bucks fans and ex-teammates on Sunday when the Pacers were introduced with "The Grinch" theme song.

However, at the end of the day, business is business in the NBA, and Brogdon made that clear.

"A few weeks before free agency," Brogdon said of when he considered leaving Milwaukee. "I had a pretty good inkling that things may not work out and things may not go in the direction that I thought they were going to go in, so I started to change my mindset and started to identify different teams and prepare myself."

"I would've loved to play for this team, if they had wanted me," he continued. "If they had valued me the way the Pacers value me. That's all I gotta say."

The Bucks played a video tribute for Brogdon at 5:57 in the first quarter Sunday, and he waved to the crowd afterward coming out of a timeout.

Brogdon, 27, spent his first three seasons in Milwaukee and was named NBA Rookie of the Year in 2017.

Entering Sunday's game, he was averaging a career-best 18.7 points, 7.5 assists and 4.6 rebounds in a new role with more ballhandling responsibilities.

"That's exactly what it is. It's about a new opportunity, a new challenge," Brogdon said of his desire for a bigger role. "Sort of being a leader of a team now is a totally different role, it's a way bigger role for me, but it's something I've been molded into and something I've prepared myself to do over the past three years.

"This is, I think, something that every respected NBA player wants," he added. "They want a team that they can call theirs, they want a team that they can still win at a high level, but they have the ball more in their hands and they can control more of the game."

Bucks coach Mike Budenholzer admitted to sometimes checking Brogdon's statistics in Indiana and hopes he played some small role in Brogdon's current success, but he doesn't feel any regret about how he used Brogdon in Milwaukee's system.

"I do, with guys you've coached, when I look at the box scores, I like to look and see how Malcolm's doing, purely on a box score basis," Budenholzer said. "It looks like he's been really good. I think, probably, the ball is in his hands a lot being the primary playmaker, playing the pick-and-roll, they execute their stuff really well."

Shortly after the Pacers' team bus arrived to Fiserv Forum, George Hill interrupted Brogdon's media scrum with a joke.

"You cut that ugly mustache off, that s--- was trash," Hill said, roasting Brogdon.

"I'm trying to be like you, you don't want me to look like you, bro?" Brogdon responded with a laugh.

Brogdon was unable to compete in the Pacers' first home game versus Milwaukee on Nov. 16, as a sore back left him a spectator in the Bucks' 102-83 win. But former teammate Giannis Antetokounmpo was looking forward to suiting up against Brogdon on Sunday.

Brogdon even broke out a pair of Antetokounmpo's "Black Iridescent" Zoom Freak 1 signature sneakers for the reunion in Milwaukee, as ex-teammates Khris Middleton, Sterling Brown and D.J. Wilson also embraced him with daps and hugs at half court during pregame warm-ups.

"Can you imagine this team with also Malcolm? He's not even an All-Star, he's a great player," Antetokounmpo said of Brogdon after the Bucks' 124-115 victory over the Bulls on Nov. 14. "But hey, man, everybody takes their decision. His decision was to go to Indiana and build a team over there. I think that was best for him."

"Definitely wish he was still here," Antetokounmpo added. "One of my friends, one of the guys that I always teased every day when I see him, call him ugly, we're just going back and forth. I'm going to miss that, but at the end of the day, you got to do what's best for you. I wish him the best, I wish his team the best."

Full house for Nigeria, celebrated names make their mark

Tajudeen Agunbiade was very much the name to note as experienced told.

Winner in 1999 in Johannesburg at the Africa and Middle East Para Championships, as well as later in 2007 in Cairo and 2019 in Alexandria at the African Para Championships; the crowning glory for Tajudeen Agunbiade was at the Sydney 2000 Paralympic Games. In class 9 he won the men’s singles title as well as partnering Adisa Tunde and Alabi Olufemi to men’s team success.

Now a decade later in Lagos, again in class 9, it was more gold. He beat colleague Francis Chukwuemeka (11-4, 12-10, 11-8) to secure the title, notably at the semi-final stage Francis Chukwuemeka had ended the hopes of Adisa Tunde.

Bronze for Adisa Tunde but for the one further member of the Sydney gold medal winning team, the top prize was secured. Anointed African champion in 2011 in Ismailia and earlier this year in Alexandria, Alabi Olufemi secured the class 10 title. He accounted for Algeria’s Bounedouha Karim in the only final of the tournament that was not contested by Nigerians  (11-8, 11-2, 9-11, 11-9).

More success for African champions

Success for reigning African champions; in the men’s singles events it was the same for Ahmed Koleosho and Victor Farniloye. Competing in class 2-3, Ahmed Koleosho secured the title at the expense of Olanrewaju Aminu (11-7, 11-6, 11-5); similarly at the final hurdle Victor Farniloye accounted Suraju Babatunde (11-8, 11-8, 11-9).

Both Ahmed Koleosho and Victor Farniloye are players with a history of success; in addition Ahmed Koleosho was also anointed African champion in 2015 in Agadir, Victor Farniloye in 2011 in Ismailia.

A similar situation applies to Nasiru Sule, he won the open wheelchair class in 1999 at the Africa and Middle East Championships; in 2007 in Cairo and in 2013 in Sharm El-Sheikh he struck gold at the African Para Championships. At the Valuejet Para Open, he beat Akingbemisilu Bolawa in the closest final of the tournament, to secure the class 5 top prize (12-10, 11-8, 11-13, 11-13, 11-7).

Adding to continental success, it was the same in the women’s singles events; gold medallist at the African Para Championships in 2007, 2011 and 2015, Chineye Obiora secured the class 5 title. At the final hurdle she beat colleague Christiana Ikpeoyi (11-7, 11-9, 11-9).

Striving for success

Titles for celebrated names; there were also titles for those striving to be celebrated names.

In the men’s singles, Isau Ogunkunle beat Emmanuel Chinedu (11-5, 11-6, 11-9) to claim the top prize in class 4; similarly in the women’s singles, there was success for Blessing Aiwekoe, Beauty Osarieme, Soremekun Atinuke and Kafayat Olaitan alongside Faith Obazuaye.

Blessing Aiwekhoe emerged the class 3 winner, accounting for Anne Alpunonu in the final (11-13, 11-8, 11-2, 11-3); likewise, in class 4, Beauty Osarieme beat Endurance Oboru (11-7, 11-9, 11-7), in class 7-8, Soremekun Atinuke defeated Maryam Ezeaputa (11-4, 11-2, 11-4).

Not to be overshadowed, in the title decider in class 9, Kafayay Olaitan overcame Mariam Popoola (11-4, 11-0, 11-13. 11-8); in class 10 Faith Obazuaye ended the hopes of Femitope Idris (11-3, 11-9, 11-3).

Review 2019: breath of fresh air

Published in Table Tennis
Sunday, 22 December 2019 14:36

The success brought to an end a quite incredible year for the teenagers both together and apart; players who underline and endorse the reason why we play sport. It’s fun; their attitude, their approach, their personalities, sheer delight. They play in a relaxed manner; that is no doubt a major reason why this year they did so well.

In women’s doubles events on the ITTF World Tour, most creditably they reached the semi-final stage in Hong Kong, Japan and Australia; in addition they were the runners up in Germany, prior to clinching the title in Austria.

Notably, the successes all came in the last seven months of the year starting in June; previously in May, they had won at ITTF Challenge Series tournaments in Croatia and Slovenia.

Furthermore, in early September they secured the junior girls’ doubles title at the Asian Junior and Cadet Championships in Ulaanbaator, before in December being crowned World Junior champions in Korat.

Oustanding but was not the pinnacle of the year when, prior to overcoming Korea Republic’s Jeon Jihee and Yang Haeun in the final in Zhengzhou, in the penultimate round they beat China’s Sun Yingsha and Wang Manyu, the winners at the Liebherr 2019 World Championships earlier in the year?

Almost departure at qualification stage

Equally, apart they secured titles. Miyuu Kihara won the women’s singles event at the ITTF Challenge Croatia Open. Miyu Nagasaki secured the under 21 women’s singles title at the ITTF Challenge Slovenia Open, as well as later being crowned both Asian and World Junior champion.

Success at the Asian Junior and Cadet Championships but just as the win recorded in Zhengzhou against the World champions was unique, so was the manner in which Miyu Nagasaki succeeded in Ulaanbaator.

Very nearly she did not progress beyond the initial qualification phase, had that stage been knock-out as opposed to group play, Miyu Nagasaki would not have advanced to the main draw.

In fact with the benefit of hindsight she was one point away from farewell. All played in the group phase but only first place meant progress to the knock-out stage. In the opening match China’s Kuai Man, the no.9 seed and favourite for first place, experienced a surprise four games defeat at the hands of DPR Korea’s Pak Su Gyong (12-10, 11-8, 8-11, 11-7).

Enter Miyu Nagasaki, she duly accounted for Pak Su Gyong in straight games (11-1, 11-6, 11-7); facing Kuai Man, Miyu Nagasaki needed just one game to secure first place. She succeeded, she won that one game, the second, one in which she saved games points; a four games reverse was the outcome (11-4, 14-16, 11-9, 11-6).

She lost her concluding match in the group stage but progressed to win the title; that must be a first!

Facing China

Defeat at the hands of Kuai Man, in the final of the girls’ team event against China, Miyu Nagasaki experienced defeat at the hands of Shi Xunyao. Otherwise, she very much showed her expertise against Chinese adversaries.

Most creditably on the ITTF World Tour in both Japan and in Sweden, she beat Zhu Yuling; in Ulanbaator, she ousted Huang Yingqi. In Korat at the NSDF World Junior Championships she overcame both Chen Yi and Wu Yangchen en route to gold; the former Miyuu Kihara had beaten in 3-1 defeat in the girls’ team final in Korat.

Worthy wins but despite China winning the junior girls’ team titles in both Ulaanbaator and Korat; the line-up in the junior girls’ singles semi-finals, suggests that situation may come to an end in 2020?

Unexpected line-up

Contrary to expectations, in both tournaments the only Chinese player to reach the penultimate round of the junior girls’ singles event was the pen-holder Wu Yangchen. In addition to Miyu Nagasaki, in Ulaanbaator, colleagues Kyoka Idesawa and Haruna Ojio completed the line-up; in Korat it was once again Haruna Ojio, the different name being DPK Korea’s Kim Un Song

Notably on both occasions it was a semi-final exit for Wu Yangchen, as Japan provided the finalists. In Ulaanbaator, Wu Yangchen was soundly beaten by Kyoka Idesawa, in Korat by Miyu Nagasaki.

A fine effort by 17 year old Kyoka Idesawa but she was upstaged by colleague Haruna Ojio; only 14 years old, in both Ulaanbaator and Korat, her defensive skills had mesmerised Shi Xunyao, the 2016 World junior champion and the player who has occupied top spot on the under girls’ rankings from August 2018 until relinquishing the illustrious position earlier this year in September.

In fact it was only Miyu Nagasaki who was able to combat the skills of Haruna Ojio; she prevailed in the semi-final in Ulaabaator, in the final in Korat.

Generations

Ten years ago a quite formidable group of Japanese female players emerged; at the London 2012 Olympic Games, Kasumi Ishikawa, Sayaka Hirano and Ai Fukuhara secured women’s team silver, the first ever medal for Japan at the prestigious quadrennial multi-sport gathering.

Since then, Mima Ito, Miu Hirano and Hina Hayata have appeared on the scene; now note the names Miyu Nagasaki, Miyuu Kihara, Kyoka Idesawa and Haruna Ojio.

Each group is surely benefitting from the one before? Can the latest class progress to even greater heights than their predecessors. In 2019 there was plenty of evidence.

Bruins' Chara to have more surgery on famed jaw

Published in Hockey
Sunday, 22 December 2019 13:41

Boston Bruins defenseman Zdeno Chara will miss Monday's game against the Washington Capitals to have more surgery on the jaw he broke in Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Final before returning for Game 5.

The team announced that he developed an infection and will have the plates and screws in the area removed.

"The area where the surgery was done got infected, which is kind of rare, but it does happen after six months," Chara said, according to the team website. "The decision was made to avoid maybe further troubleshooting with that area to basically remove all the plates and screws and clean it up. Pretty much the same [procedure], just instead of putting the plates in, it's gonna be taking the plates out."

Chara, 42, said he thinks he might miss only the Caps game, returning from the Christmas break for the Dec. 27 game in Buffalo.

Chara was hit in the jaw by a shot in Game 4 against the St. Louis Blues and suffered multiple fractures. He had his jaw wired together and was able to return to the series, wearing a full face mask, but the Blues ended up winning in seven games.

He said Sunday that he was experiencing tenderness in the area.

"We treated it, calmed it down and now it's just basically at that point where I think it's stable," he said. "But we want to avoid further possible repeat infections. We have to treat it."

'Unrealistic' to think City can catch Liverpool - Pep

Published in Soccer
Sunday, 22 December 2019 14:42

Pep Guardiola says it is "unrealistic" to expect Manchester City to chase down Liverpool at the top of the Premier League despite a morale-boosting win over high-flying Leicester.

City beat Leicester 3-1 at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday to move to within 11 points of Liverpool, whose domestic commitments were postponed because of the World Club Cup in Qatar.

Victory over Brendan Rodgers' side prompted questions about whether the reigning champions are still title contenders, but Guardiola insists Liverpool's form makes an challenge unlikely.

"When a team has 16 victories from 17 [games] it's unrealistic to think we are going to chase them," said Guardiola.

"It's unrealistic right now. We have to try to win our games, secure Champions League for next season and then you never know, no? "If they drop a couple of games, and we win and win -- I don't know. When one team lose one game in the last 53 or 54, I'm not optimistic that they are going to lose four or five in 10 or 11 games because they are incredibly strong."

City begin their hectic Christmas fixture list with a trip to Wolves on Dec. 27 before facing Sheffield United at the Etihad on Dec. 29.

Along with Wolves, Bournemouth, Newcastle and Leicester, City are one of five teams who have been scheduled to play twice in less than 48 hours and Guardiola is less than impressed.

"I wrote a letter to the Premier League to say thank you and we are going to the fridge after Wolves to get ready for Sheffield United.

"We are training [Dec.] 23 and 24. The night of 24 is off, the morning of 25 off. Then 26 training and 27 Nuno's team [Wolves]."

Losing pays off for Bengals, who clinch No. 1 pick

Published in Breaking News
Sunday, 22 December 2019 14:35

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. -- The Cincinnati Bengals officially hit rock bottom at Hard Rock Stadium. And many fans couldn't be more thrilled.

Cincinnati secured the worst record in the NFL this season and the top overall pick in the upcoming draft with a 38-35 overtime loss to the Miami Dolphins on Sunday. The defeat ensures the Bengals will have the top overall pick for the first time since 2003 regardless of what happens in the final week of the regular season.

Cincinnati was trending toward the ultimate prize for season-long futility long before its Week 16 trip to Miami. The Bengals lost their first 11 games, their worst start to a season since 1993. The drought ended in a 22-6 victory over the New York Jets, one of the other contenders for the league's worst record.

The Dolphins and the Bengals were the last two teams to pick up a victory this season. But after Miami beat the Jets in Week 9 and the Indianapolis Colts in Week 10, Cincinnati took the lead in the race to the bottom.

Entering Week 11, Cincinnati had a 54.6 percent chance of landing the first pick in the 2020 NFL draft, according to ESPN's FPI. Washington had the next-best odds at 19.5 percent.

With their performance on Sunday against the Dolphins, the Bengals eliminated the need for any more projections.

Miami scored touchdowns on its first two drives while Cincinnati's offense sputtered. The Bengals failed to pick up a first down on five of their seven drives in the first half. The Bengals couldn't score a touchdown on their only red zone possession of the first half and were 0-for-4 on third downs.

The Dolphins, who entered Sunday ranked 29th in scoring offense at 17.2 points per game, had a 21-6 lead at halftime that proved to be insurmountable. Miami opened up a 35-12 lead in the fourth quarter that was enough to withstand a late push by the Bengals.

Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton was 33-of-56 passing for 396 yards and four touchdowns. Dalton was benched earlier this season and had a 36.2 Total QBR for the season, the lowest of his career. Dalton's six-year, $96 million contract is set to expire after the 2020 season.

In his latest projection, ESPN's Mel Kiper Jr. has the Bengals taking LSU quarterback Joe Burrow with the top overall pick in the 2020 draft. Burrow, an Ohio native, threw for 4,715 yards and 48 touchdowns and won this year's Heisman Trophy.

The last time the Bengals selected first overall, they selected USC quarterback Carson Palmer after he won the Heisman in 2002. He was the Bengals' starter from 2004 to 2010.

Jackson mark leads Ravens to No. 1; Ingram hurt

Published in Breaking News
Sunday, 22 December 2019 13:55

CLEVELAND -- Lamar Jackson set a Baltimore Ravens record for touchdown passes while lifting the franchise to new heights in the regular season on Sunday.

Jackson carried the Ravens to the first No. 1 seed in their 24-year existence, throwing three touchdown passes in a 31-15 win over the Cleveland Browns. It was a day of celebration for Jackson, who broke Vinny Testaverde's single-season team record for touchdown passes with his 34th late in the first half.

The Ravens left FirstEnergy Stadium with some concern, however. Pro Bowl running back Mark Ingram limped off the field early in the fourth quarter with a calf injury and did not return. A source told ESPN's Adam Schefter that Ingram strained his calf, though the extent of the injury will be unclear until he has an MRI.

Ingram left the locker room in a walking boot and told ESPN's Josina Anderson that it was "helping me not to push off my foot and put pressure on my calf."

The Ravens (13-2) had been one of three AFC teams never to have earned the No. 1 seed. (The seeding system was instituted in 1975.) The only AFC teams not to capture the top seed are the New York Jets and Houston Texans.

Top seeds have dominated the NFL postseason recently. A No. 1 seed has won the Super Bowl in five of the past six seasons: the Seattle Seahawks (2013), New England Patriots (2014 and 2016), Denver Broncos (2015) and Philadelphia Eagles (2017).

This could represent the last time Jackson and other select players like Ingram, safety Earl Thomas and guard Marshal Yanda play until Jan. 11 or 12. Baltimore finishes the regular season next Sunday against the Pittsburgh Steelers and then enjoys its third first-round bye in team history.

In avenging their last loss of the season, the Ravens extended their winning streak to 11 games since that 40-25 defeat to the Browns on Sept. 29. The Ravens matched the team record for most victories in a regular season with 13 and set a regular-season franchise mark with their seventh road win.

The highest seed the Ravens have ever previously achieved was No. 2, which occurred in 2006 and 2011. This marks Baltimore's first first-round bye since 2011.

Jackson set his latest record with a late flurry in the first half. After struggling on his first four drives, he established the milestone with a 39-yard touchdown pass to Mark Andrews with 1:18 left in the second quarter. He then connected on two more touchdown passes -- 14 yards to Andrews and a 12-yarder to Ingram -- for his NFL-best eighth game with three or more touchdown passes.

Jackson surpassed Testaverde, who threw 33 touchdown passes in the franchise's inaugural 1996 season. Coincidentally, Jackson recently became the Ravens' first Pro Bowl quarterback since Testaverde, ending the second-longest current drought by one team. (The Miami Dolphins have the longest.)

Entering Sunday as the NFL leader in touchdown passes, Jackson is the front-runner for the NFL's Most Valuable Player. Jackson's 36 touchdown passes are the most in a season by a player before his 23rd birthday, according to ESPN Stats & Information.

Jackson is the fifth quarterback all time with 40 combined passing and rushing touchdowns in his first or second NFL season. He joins Patrick Mahomes (52 in 2018), Dan Marino (48 in 1984), Kurt Warner (42 in 1999) and Daunte Culpepper (40 in 2000).

Curry rejoins Warriors to continue hand rehab

Published in Basketball
Sunday, 22 December 2019 14:39

SAN FRANCISCO -- Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry is back with his team as he continues rehabbing a broken left hand.

The star guard, who suffered the injury during an Oct. 30 loss to the Phoenix Suns, had his first surgery on the hand on Nov. 1 in Los Angeles. He has been in the LA area over the last couple weeks after having a second scheduled procedure to take out pins and remove the brace he has been wearing. He has since begun the rehab process.

The timeline on Curry's projected return hasn't changed -- he was expected to be re-evaluated three months after the first surgery -- but the Warriors players and coaches are happy to have him around on a more consistent basis again.

"He's been doing basketball movements," Warriors coach Steve Kerr said after Sunday's practice. "He hasn't been shooting the ball, but he's been out on the floor doing a lot of lateral movement, jumping, that kind of stuff. And it's nice to have him in the gym; it just feels better when he's around."

Kerr is hopeful that Curry, who sat on the bench with the team during Friday's win over the New Orleans Pelicans, can start traveling again with the group in the near future.

"We'd like to have him with the team as much as possible," Kerr said. "I haven't talked to him about our next trip, but I'm sure he'll be around the team more and more now that he's allowed to be up here with our staff. He's been here now the last few days, every day working with our training staff. He's present again so I imagine that will stay the same."

The Warriors received some more positive injury-related news on Saturday after an MRI on rookie forward Eric Paschall's right knee came back clean. Paschall injured his knee in the first quarter of Friday's win after a collision with Pelicans guard J.J. Redick. Warriors veteran forward Draymond Green suggested after Paschall's knee injury that an extra week or two off wouldn't be a bad thing for the rookie, who has also been battling a hip injury over the last couple weeks. Paschall is averaging 15.4 points and 4.9 rebounds a game after being selected with the 41st pick in last summer's NBA draft.

"It's just been a tough couple of weeks for Eric," Kerr said. "I don't know that he needs a week off, he's just had a week off from the [hip] injury. And we got really good news [Saturday] with the MRI and the evaluations, so he fully practiced today and he's anxious to get back out there. Questionable for tomorrow we'll see how he's doing but all in all I'm just thrilled that he's not seriously injured, and I know he's anxious to get his season back on track."

Paschall went through Sunday's practice and could play again on Monday against the Minnesota Timberwolves.

"Eric is a big, strong kid," Kerr said. "The hip tweak was nothing major. The knee scare, just watching it on tape, it was pretty scary when a guy rolls up your leg and so just glad that it was not more serious."
