Todd-Horschel in five-way tie at top of QBE Shootout leaderboard

NAPLES, Fla. - Brendon Todd and Billy Horschel shot a 6-under 66 in modified alternate shot Saturday for a share of the second round lead on the QBE Shootout.

Rory Sabbatini-Kevin Tway (67), Harold Varner III-Ryan Palmer (70), Jason Kokrak-J.T. Poston (68) and Charles Howell III-Bubba Watson (66) also were 19 under. Ian Poulter and Graeme McDowell (65) were a stroke back. The tournament will close Sunday with a best-ball round.

Todd, the FedExCup points leader after victories this season at Bermuda and Mayakoba, ended up with Horschel when Brandt Snedeker withdrew because of an injured left ring finger.

''I knew when Brendon was going to be my partner when Sneds had to withdraw I got a better partner,'' Horshell said. Sorry, Sneds'', but Brendon's been playing really well, two wins, fourth-place finish. I was probably the happiest guy in the world at that point. I've known Brendon since college days, he's a great putter.

They had six birdies in windy conditions after morning rain at Tiburon Golf Club.

''Billy's hitting the ball really well, we're both putting two shots in the fairway,''Todd said. The tricky part is you're not putting every hole, so to get the speed of the greens down is just tough out there, but I think we ham-and-egged it pretty good.''

Lexi Thompson and Sean O'Hair were last in the 12-team field at 6 under after a 74.

Newtown wins title on Sandy Hook anniversary

Published in Breaking News
Saturday, 14 December 2019 16:04

Newtown High School quarterback Jack Street threw a 36-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Riley Ward on the final play of the Connecticut Class LL state championship game Saturday against Darien, giving the Nighthawks a 13-7 win and the state title on the seventh anniversary of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting.

The championship was Newtown's first since 1992. The school finished its season 13-0, while Darien fell to 11-2.

Vigils and church services were held Saturday in Connecticut to mark the anniversary of the shooting at Sandy Hook and remember victims of other gun violence since the tragedy in Newtown.

Twenty first-graders and six educators were killed at the school on Dec. 14, 2012.

Gov. Ned Lamont ordered all state and U.S. flags in Connecticut to be flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Saturday in remembrance of the victims.

"The tragedy that occurred that day is one of the worst in our history," Lamont, a Democrat, said in a statement. "But in its aftermath, we witnessed an unprecedented outpouring of humanity, hope, and kindness cascading into our state from over the entire world, spreading a message of love that we must proactively protect."

Sea, by ground: Perry runs for 304 in Navy rout

Published in Breaking News
Saturday, 14 December 2019 15:47

PHILADELPHIA -- Navy used a trick play to help reverse a rare losing streak against Army, and Malcolm Perry ran for a career-high 304 yards and two touchdowns in front of President Donald Trump in the No. 21 Mids' 31-7 victory Saturday at Lincoln Financial Field.

Navy (9-2, No. 23, CFP) won the Commander-In-Chief's Trophy for the 16th time and snapped a three-game losing streak to Army (5-8) in the 120th game between the service academies.

Navy leads the series 61-52-7.

Perry, the 5-foot-9, 190-pound senior quarterback, helped Navy's offense run away with another game for the record book. He ran for a 55-yard TD in the first half, added a 44-yard scamper and set Navy season records in yards rushing and total 100-yard games.

His most GIF-worthy play, however, didn't end up with his name on the scoring sheet. Perry took the snap at the 1-yard line, ran to his left and handed off the ball to receiver Chance Warren, who threw to Jamale Carothers for the score and a 14-7 lead.

It was Navy's twist on the Philly Special -- the Naval Special? -- at the home of the Philadelphia Eagles.

It was Navy's only passing yardage of the game. Perry, who was the game's MVP, didn't even attempt a pass, and Army surprise starting quarterback Christian Anderson threw just once.

Anderson wasn't listed on Army's two-deep depth chart and got the call over an apparently injured Kelvin Hopkins Jr., who had two rushing TDs in last year's 17-10 win over Navy.

Anderson sparked the Black Knights on the game's opening possession, scoring on a 5-yard run to cap a methodical 10-minute, 41-second drive.

Perry needed just four plays to even the score on a dynamic run that sent the Mids into a frenzy.

The Cadets and Midshipmen stood, saluted, bounced and cheered for the entirety of what's billed as "America's Game." Trump made a return visit for the second straight year; he was also at the 2016 game as president-elect.

The traditional Philly game drew 68,075 fans and ESPN's "College GameDay" was on hand.

With pride and patriotism stretched end zone to end zone, Trump sat on the Army side of the field in the first half and crossed the field to the Navy side for the second half.

Carothers crossed the goal line for a 5-yard score in the third that made it 21-3 and sent the Mids on their way toward clinching the CIC Trophy, awarded to the team with the best record in games among the three service academies.

Bijan Nichols kicked a 37-yard field goal, and Perry added a 15-yard TD run in the fourth.

THE TAKEAWAY

Army: The Black Knights rushed for only 122 yards after averaging 311.7 yards this season, good enough for second nationally. Army had to surrender the CIC Trophy after winning it in consecutive seasons for the first time in program history.

Navy: The Midshipmen are trying to finish the season ranked in the AP Top 25 for only the third time (2004, 2015) in the last 56 years. Navy has been ranked during the season four times in the last five years. The Mids also improved to 11-2 over Army at Lincoln Financial Field.

BIG WIN

Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo became the winningest coach in the history of the Army-Navy series with nine. Army's Earl Blaik went 8-8-2 from 1941-1958.

NAPOLEON OVERTHROWN

Perry passed Napoleon McCallum to set Navy's single-season rushing mark. McCallum held the record since 1983 with 1,587 yards.

Perry also became Navy's single-season record holder in total offense and with nine straight 100-yard rushing games. He also became the career leading rusher in the Army-Navy series.

UP NEXT

Army's season is over.

Navy plays Kansas State on Dec. 31 in the Liberty Bowl.

Sources: Suggs angling to be claimed by Ravens

Published in Breaking News
Saturday, 14 December 2019 15:21

Terrell Suggs, released by the Cardinals on Friday and eligible to be claimed on waivers Monday at 4 p.m. ET, will strongly consider not reporting if a team other than the Baltimore Ravens claims him, league sources say.

Any team that claims Suggs will owe him just over $350,000 for the final two weeks of the regular season. But Suggs doesn't care about that money; he cares about returning to Baltimore, which is his overwhelming preference.

With a 12-2 record, the Ravens have the NFL's lowest waiver claim, meaning every team will have the chance to claim Suggs before Baltimore. Knowing this, Suggs has told some people that he is unlikely to report anywhere other than Baltimore, wanting to finish his NFL career in the same city in which he started it.

The question is whether any contending teams that could use pass-rushing help -- and there are many -- disregard the wishes of Suggs, who started 13 games for the Cardinals this season. The answer will come sometime Monday afternoon.

Rendon on Dodgers: 'Hollywood lifestyle' not a fit

Published in Baseball
Saturday, 14 December 2019 16:46

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- The Los Angeles Dodgers approached this year's winter meetings with striking aggression, but nonetheless whiffed on the two biggest prizes in free agency. They offered Gerrit Cole a contract that reached $300 million, but watched him join the New York Yankees on a record deal. They expressed interest in Anthony Rendon, but learned that the sentiment was not mutual.

Instead, Rendon joined the Los Angeles Angels, who play 30 miles south in Anaheim, California, located outside of L.A. County.

Rendon, speaking during his introductory news conference on Saturday, spoke highly of the Dodgers organizationally, but said from the podium "the Hollywood lifestyle" of L.A. "didn't seem like it would be a fit for us as a family." Later, in a smaller scrum, Rendon, who was born and raised in Houston, was asked about his general hesitancy towards the state of California at the onset of the offseason and joked about the high tax rate.

"I just think environment itself," Rendon continued. "I think when people think about California, they think about straight Hollywood, that Hollywood glamour, whole bunch of flashes, so much paparazzi. But everyone said it's just the complete opposite here."

Rendon, also pursued by the Texas Rangers, agreed on a seven-year, $245 million contract with the Angels on Wednesday, putting him on the same roster as Mike Trout, Shohei Ohtani, Andrelton Simmons, Justin Upton and Albert Pujols.

The Angels had -- and still have -- a desperate need for frontline starting pitching and joined the Yankees and Dodgers in an aggressive pursuit of Cole. Moreno met with Cole, his agent, Scott Boras, and some of Boras' representatives at Angel Stadium on Sunday, before the start of the winter meetings from the San Diego. When the meeting concluded, Moreno asked Boras to stay for a one-on-one conversation. Moreno told Boras that Rendon was his prime target. He wanted Rendon to know he was wanted; that he embodied what Moreno considered emblematic of the Angels' brand.

"When I told Anthony that," Boras said, "I think it had a large impact on his decision making."

Moreno is an ardent baseball fan. Angels general manager Billy Eppler recalled often calling him in the middle of the afternoon to notify Moreno about a roster move and being asked, with particular excitement, "Are you watching this game?" Eppler never knew which one. Asked when he learned about Moreno's affinity for Rendon, Eppler chuckled.

"I don't know," he said, "four years ago?"

Actually, it was longer than that. Moreno had been hearing about Rendon since his days at Rice University and followed his path through the majors as he established himself among the game's best all-around players. When Cole agreed to a nine-year, $324 million contract with the Yankees on Tuesday night, the Angels immediately shifted their focus to Rendon. By late Wednesday morning, they basically had a deal in place. Later that night, it was done.

Trout reached out to Rendon shortly thereafter.

"Based on the exclamation points in his texts," Rendon said, "he seemed really excited."

Trout is one of only three position players who have accumulated more FanGraphs wins above replacement than Rendon over the last four years, along with Mookie Betts and Christian Yelich. In that stretch, from 2016 to 2019, Rendon batted .299/.384/.528, averaging 26 home runs and 101 RBIs. Last season, which ended in World Series triumph, he broke out, finishing third in National League MVP voting after batting .319/.412/.598 with 34 home runs and 26 RBIs for the Washington Nationals, who basically lost their chance of re-signing him when they gave Stephen Strasburg the same seven-year, $245 million contract.

The Angels have informed Rendon that they will add to their starting rotation and are major players in both the trade and free-agent markets, eyeing names such as Hyun-Jin Ryu, Dallas Keuchel and Corey Kluber. Rendon didn't necessarily play a position of need, but the Angels wanted to remain flexible with regards to adding impact talent.

"That's one of the primary elements of roster construction -- if you're not flexible, you can find yourself left out in the cold," Eppler said. "We identified a few players that we felt brought a lot of certainty and impact in this free-agent market. Anthony was clearly one of those players."

Rendon's deal came nine months after Moreno signed Trout to a nine-year, $426.5 million extension, which made the Angels the first team with two players averaging $35 million in annual earnings. The Angels are coming off a 90-loss season and are 10 years removed from their last postseason victory. But their moves this offseason -- adding Joe Maddon as their manager, signing Rendon and staying aggressive on pitching -- make it clear they're eyeing contention.

"I think he made a commitment to Mike," Boras said of Moreno, "and Anthony was a big part of fulfilling that commitment."

Kenyan sub-two star insists it’s “possible” he can lower his own global mark when he bids for historic fifth win in the UK capital next year

Eliud Kipchoge believes he could break his own world record when he bids to become the first able-bodied athlete to win the  Virgin Money London Marathon for a fifth time next April.

The Kenyan superstar, who created history with his groundbreaking run of 1:59:40 in October, has announced he will race in the UK capital once again in 2020 for the 40th edition of an event he has won four times in four appearances.

Kipchoge’s sub two-hour run in Vienna was not eligible to be considered for world record purposes, given the controlled conditions in which it was achieved, but he can see the two-hour barrier being broken in a big city marathon in the not-too distant future.

For now, the official world record stands as the 2:01:39 which the Olympic champion ran in Berlin last year and, though he insists there is plenty of training to do between now and the London race day of April 26, he won’t rule out going quicker come springtime.

“Absolutely,” was Kipchoge’s answer when asked if he could create yet more history in London, where he won in a time of 2:02:37 earlier this year which broke his own course record. “It is possible.”

Has what he achieved in Vienna in fact given him the confidence that anything is possible?

“Absolutely, yes.”

Kipchoge is undoubtedly the dominant force in world marathon and his achievements have gained recognition across the globe, with the 35-year-old currently in Britain to attend the BBC Sports Personality of the Year, where he will receive the World Sport Star of the Year award.

He is feted as a hero, too, in his native country, where he received a very different kind of medal.

“Everyone in Kenya is recognising me,” he said. “I can say it is a crazy time. There was no need for a big procession because the president honoured me with the national certificate. I was given the honour – the golden heart – the highest recognition by the Head of State.”

Just don’t expect Kipchoge to use his fame to follow the likes of Haile Gebrselassie into pursuing any sort of political career.

“I think it is good but I don’t want to go into politics,” continued Kipchoge. “I’m happy that running under two hours unified the whole world. Kenya came to a standstill for more than two hours. Unity as far as Kenyans and the whole world is concerned: that’s my happiness. Politics is out of the question for me.”

He added: “Fame comes with a responsibility and I think I’m enjoying it in a positive way. I’m doing what will be possible. It’s okay because I’m happy with my performance.”

The worrying news for Kipchoge’s opponents is that despite all of his success he is looking to keep improving that level of performance.

“I still have the fire,” he said. “Even if I am tired and have just woken up I just go for a run and after ten minutes the energy just comes.

“When I wake up every day is another challenge. I will take a big challenge in London next year to win for the fifth time, it is not easy. It is a big challenge now.

“I have shown the way to all that to break two hours is possible. It will not be so long before we see an athlete run under two hours in a marathon.”

As road running times continue to tumble, however, so the part being played by technologically advanced footwear is coming under increasing scrutiny. Nike have been at the forefront of those developments, with Kipchoge wearing next generation AlphaFly shoes during his 1:59 attempt. He insists, however, that any record breaking is being driven predominantly by athlete performance, rather than any products.

“I thank Nike for the good shoes, they are doing a great job, but you know that above all it is the person themselves,” he said. “I will give you an example. We have 10 teams in Formula One, with the great engines and the great tyres from Pirelli but only Lewis Hamilton is winning. Why? Because he is focused and he is a very good professional driver. I met him in Abu Dhabi and I realised that to win it is not the tyres, it is the person.

“You know, what makes a human being is his conscience.  If you don’t believe you can run fast, even in the best shoes you can’t do it.”

KKM Inks Buddy Kofoid For Full USAC Season

INDIANAPOLIS – Buddy Kofoid will go full time with Keith Kunz/Curb-Agajanian Motorsports in 2020, chasing rookie-of-the-year honors with the NOS Energy Drink USAC National Midget Series.

Kofoid has already impressed in his short time with KKM, winning in his very first midget race with the team at Jacksonville (Ill.) Speedway on Sept. 20.

He ran the entire four-race USAC California Swing in a KKM car as well, earning a best finish of sixth at Ventura (Calif.) Raceway. That result left Kofoid as the second-highest rookie finisher during the Turkey Night Grand Prix, behind only Cannon McIntosh, who will drive a KKM-prepared entry during the upcoming Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Nationals in January.

The 17-year-old won the Fremont (Ohio) Speedway 410 sprint car track championship this season in the Ed Neumeister-owned No. 11n and is looking forward to adding his name to the list of drivers who have wheeled a midget for the 11-time USAC championship team.

“I’m really excited to run for Keith and Pete next year with Keith Kunz Motorsports/Curb-Agajanian,” said Kofoid, who joins fellow rookie teammate Daison Pursley as a USAC full-timer for KKM in 2020. “I’ve always wanted to drive for them, and it’s been a fun experience so far this year. I’m looking forward to doing a lot more next year.

“They have a great reputation and have had some of the best drivers (in the past), so I know I will learn a lot.”

Kofoid joins drivers like Jason Leffler, Cole Whitt, Bryan Clauson, Kyle Larson, Christopher Bell, Rico Abreu, Tanner Thorson, Spencer Bayston and Logan Seavey as a pilot for KKM’s midget squad.

Previous USAC National Midget Series rookies of the years to have come out of the KKM fleet include Darren Hagen, Clauson, Larson, Abreu, Bell, Carson Macedo, Tanner Carrick and Seavey.

Georgia RB Cook arrested on alcohol charge

Georgia running back James Cook was arrested early Saturday after he was allegedly found to have an open alcoholic beverage in his vehicle.

He is the younger brother of Minnesota Vikings running back Dalvin Cook.

James Cook, 20, is facing charges of possession of an open container of an alcoholic beverage in the passenger area and driving without a valid license, both misdemeanors, following his arrest by the Athens-Clarke County Police Department.

He was booked at 1:46 a.m. Saturday and released on bond about an hour later.

Cook, a sophomore, has played in all 13 games for the Bulldogs this season, rushing for 176 yards and two touchdowns on 28 carries.

It is unknown if this incident will affect his availability for the Bulldogs' upcoming bowl game. Georgia faces Baylor in the Allstate Sugar Bowl on Jan. 1.

Party foul: Beer in stands costs Peters $14K

Published in Breaking News
Saturday, 14 December 2019 14:04

For Baltimore Ravens cornerback Marcus Peters, a celebratory drink cost him five figures.

Peters was fined $14,037 for drinking a beer after his pass breakup at the end of the game sealed the Ravens' 24-17 win against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday.

After knocking down Josh Allen's fourth-down pass at the Baltimore 1-yard line with 1:03 remaining, Peters jumped into a section filled with Ravens fans at Buffalo's New Era Field and shotgunned a can of beer as he lay back in their arms.

The NFL fined Peters for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Peters reacted on Twitter and didn't seem too fazed by the fine.

Baltimore clinched a playoff berth with Peters' heroics.

It was the latest big play by Peters, who was acquired from the Los Angeles Rams in October. He has returned two interceptions for touchdowns since joining the Ravens.

Trump touts pro sports option at Army-Navy

Published in Breaking News
Saturday, 14 December 2019 13:24

PHILADELPHIA -- President Donald Trump used his appearance at the annual Army-Navy football game to pitch to the players an administration policy change that clears the way for athletes at the nation's military academies to play professional sports after they graduate and delay their active-duty service.

To cheers in each locker room before the 120th playing of the game, he said he was giving those athletes with pro potential the chance "to make a fortune, and after you're all finished with your professional career, you'll go and you'll serve and everybody's thrilled.''

Turning to Army's coach, Jeff Monken, the president joked, "It probably gives the coach no reason to ever lose another game.''

A memo signed in November by Defense Secretary Mark Esper spelled out the new guidelines. It said the athletes must get approval from the Pentagon chief, and it requires them to eventually fulfill their military obligation or repay the costs of their education. The Obama administration put a policy in place allowing some athletes to turn pro and defer their military service.

In the Navy locker room, he congratulated the favored Midshipmen on "a hell of a season,'' but added, "You know, it's only a great season, you know it has to happen today, otherwise you wouldn't call it a great season. So you better go out there and play hard.''

With impeachment looming in Washington, Trump made the day trip to Philadelphia for the second year in a row for the storied game. Trump, who also went in 2016 as president-elect, is the 10th commander in chief to attend the contest.

In 2016, Army snapped Navy's 14-game winning streak and has won three years in a row. But the Midshipmen entered Saturday's game as a significant favorite. At 9-2, they ranked 23rd in the nation, while Army's Black Knights had a 5-7 record.

Trump was accompanied by Esper and the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Mark Milley. The president was on the field for the coin toss. The crowd cheered as Trump walked off the field after the national anthem. He put on a red Keep America Great hat. Still wearing the hat, Trump switched to the Army side of the field at halftime, as is traditionally done.

Among the other presidents to have attended the Army-Navy game are Barack Obama, George W. Bush, Gerald Ford and John F. Kennedy.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
