13 Races For DIRTcar 358 Modified Series

Published in Racing
Friday, 13 December 2019 15:23

INDIANAPOLIS — The 2020 DIRTcar 358 Modified Series schedule was released on Friday during the second day of the Performance Racing Industry Trade Show in Indianapolis.

It includes many fan-favorite events, plus a new exciting two-race Quebec swing.

Building off the success of 2019 the series will once again be a unified tour. The DIRTcar 358 Series championship will include points earned at drivers’ weekly home tracks, as well as points earned at each series event.

DIRTcar 358 Modified Series standouts like Erick Rudolph, Mike Mahaney, Dave Marcuccilli, Corey Wheeler and more will battle it out wheel-to-wheel across the Northeast and Canada at tracks like Fulton Speedway, Utica-Rome Speedway and Autodrome Drummond, all hotbeds for DIRTcar 358 Modified action.

The season kicks off on April 25 during the High Bank Holdup at Fulton Speedway. This highly anticipated event will boast a tremendous car count and incredibly close competition.

With Fulton sanctioning 358s in the Hoosier Racing Tire Weekly Championship, the field will be full of local and traveling contenders.

A pair of Sundays and Mondays mark the next four series races, beginning with a return to Utica-Rome Speedway in Vernon, N.Y., on May 10. Last year, 358 star and Utica-Rome regular Rudolph took the checkered flag at Utica-Rome.

Fast forward to mid-July and the 358 Modified Series heats up starting July 12 at quarter-mile Cornwall Motor Speedway, where Canadian, North Country and Central New York favorites will be on hand to contend for the win.

A day later, the series jumps back across the border stateside to Mohawk Int’l Raceway.

Mohawk has been a staple on the 358 Series since its inception in 1993. Kenny Tremont Jr. took the win at Mohawk in that inaugural season, while series star Dave Marcuccilli took the win there last year on his way to a fourth-place finish in points.

Two weeks later on July 27, the mighty 358s ride back across the border for a two-race swing through Quebec. The action starts at Autodrome Drummond, where promoter and driver Yan Bussiere will be eager to defend home territory.

Following on from Drummond, the series hauls over to Autodrome Granby to take on their local stars on July 28. Danny Johnson won the first 358 Series race at Granby in 2000 in the midst of an incredible eight-race series winning streak.

The series then returns to action on Sept. 11 at Can-Am Speedway. Can-Am has reconfigured its oval into a four-tenths-mile speedway for 2020. This will be the 358 Series first look at the new track.

One week later, on Sept. 18, Mohawk Int’l Raceway hosts its second 358 Series event of the year, making it one of two tracks to double up in 2020.

The DIRTcar 358 Modified Series takes center stage during the NAPA Super DIRT Week XLIV satellite events. Utica-Rome Speedway gets the pre-game party underway on Oct. 6. Last year, Super DIRTcar Series champion Williamson took the win over rival Rudolph.

The next day, Oct. 7, Weedsport Speedway’s NAPA Super DIRT Week Kick-Off Party sets the stage for the 358s. Last year’s race was won by Larry Wight in a thriller.

Thursday, Oct. 8 marks the date of the fan-favorite Hurricane 100 at Brewerton Speedway. The Hurricane 100 has been a staple of the NAPA Super DIRT Week satellite schedule since 2001, when Bob McCreadie drove to Victory Lane.

Finally, on Saturday, Oct. 10, the DIRTcar 358 Modified Series’ Salute to the Troops 150 takes the green flag at Oswego Speedway. Billy Decker won $20,000 plus in the 150-lapper in 2019, which will be remembered as one of the best in the race’s history.

Brockville Ontario Speedway caps the 358 Series schedule. Last year, Erick Rudolph claimed his third series championship, while David Hebert shocked the field with the lucrative win in front of a packed grandstand.

Li forced to replay shot after playing out of turn

MELBOURNE, Australia – Some early drama unfolded Saturday at the Presidents Cup, just two holes into the morning fourball frame.

After a wayward drive at the par-5 second, Haotong Li deftly weaved his second shot out of the trees, but the attempt was played out of turn. Justin Thomas, who was paired with Rickie Fowler, had Li replay the shot per Rule 6.4 of the Rules of Golf, which states, "in match play, the order of play is fundamental; if you play out of turn, your opponent may cancel that stroke and make you play again."

Li's (second) second shot ended up hitting a tree, and Li ended up not finishing the hole after Marc Leishman made par.

The International duo lost the hole to go 1 down and trailed the Americans by two holes at the turn.

Watch: Thomas miffed after Internationals don't concede putt

Justin Thomas doesn't appreciate having to putt gimmes.

The American star let the Internationals know that during his Presidents Cup fourball match Saturday at Royal Melbourne.

After pitching to 3 feet on the par-4 11th hole, Thomas had the short birdie putt left to win the hole and give he and Rickie Fowler a 3-up lead over Marc Leishman and Haotong Li. Expecting the Internationals to conceded the putt, Thomas was unhappy that no such concession happened.

After sinking the putt, Thomas looked at his competitors and used his putter as a measuring stick to show the putt was inside the leather.

It's unclear why the Internationals didn't give Thomas the putt. Earlier in the hole, Leishman asked an official to have Thomas mark his ball to prevent a potential backstop while Fowler prepared to play his second shot into the green.

And on the second hole of the match, Thomas called out Li for playing out of turn and forced Li to replay his shot. The Internationals ended up losing the hole.

Giannis to return as Bucks look to extend streak

Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo will play Friday night against the Grizzlies after initially being listed as questionable with a right quad tendon injury.

The reigning MVP and candidate to repeat missed Wednesday's 127-112 win over the Pelicans with the injury, the first game he had missed this season. He was upgraded to probable late Friday afternoon before the Bucks announced he will play at Memphis as they look to extend their win streak to 17 games.

Antetokounmpo has been on a tear to start the season, averaging 30.9 points, 13.2 rebounds and 5.5 assists in just 31.6 minutes per game.

The Bucks enter Friday's action tied with the Lakers for the best record in the league at 22-3.

Source: Cubs, Morrow agree to minor-league deal

Published in Baseball
Friday, 13 December 2019 14:38

CHICAGO -- The Cubs are bringing back oft-injured reliever Brandon Morrow on a minor-league deal, according to a source familiar with the situation.

Morrow, 35, last pitched in the majors on the final day before the 2018 All-Star break. He's been plagued with elbow issues ever since.

Morrow signed a two-year, $21 million contract with Chicago before the 2018 season after pitching in all seven games of the World Series for the Los Angeles Dodgers the previous October.

Morrow was 22 of 24 in save opportunities before going on the injured list. He spent the entirety of last season at the Cubs spring facility, attempting to get healthy, but eventually had nerve decompression surgery on Sept. 1. He's "full go" for spring training, according to the source.

Morrow is a 12-year veteran with a career 3.96 ERA as a starter then reliever. But he's had nine disabled/injured list stints over the course of his career. His deal pays him $1 million, plus bonuses, if makes it back to the majors.

Ospreys were humbled by Racing 92 for the second successive weekend in the Heineken Champions Cup, as the Pool Four leaders ran riot in Paris.

The French had a try bonus point before half-time as Louis Dupichot, Juan Imhoff twice and Simon Zebo crossed.

Tries from Luke Morgan, Lesley Klim with two, Luke Price and Shaun Venter claimed an Ospreys bonus point, their first point in four European games.

But they have now lost 10 of 11 matches in all competitions this season.

Second-half tries from Georges Colombe and Yoan Tanga ensured Racing were already out of reach before Ospreys' encouraging three-try revival in the last third of the game.

Racing had won 40-19 in Swansea last week and Ospreys could have been a try down within 38 seconds at the Paris La Defense Arena, but Maxime Machenaud had inched slightly in front of Dupichot as the Racing wing kicked ahead.

The Welsh side made the most of that let-off to take the lead through Morgan, putting the ball through the backs to allow the wing enough space to race clear down the left sideline for an unconverted try.

But Racing were soon level when Ospreys spilled the ball in midfield and Dupichot eventually capitalised to gather the ball and go over.

Ospreys were again caught out when Imhoff picked off Marty McKenzie's long pass to go under the posts, giving Machenaud a simple conversion.

A third French try soon followed as Dupichot took an inside ball, waltzing through a large gap in a disorganised defensive line, before sending fellow wing Imhoff under the posts again.

Ospreys could have reduced the deficit but Ashley Lloyd's loose pass went to ground with the try line at their mercy.

Racing had the bonus point wrapped up before half-time as Zebo tumbled over for the Ireland full-back's first try of the season, Machenaud's third conversion making it 26-5.

To their credit Ospreys came out for the second half with their heads up, but errors continued to suck all the life out of their efforts.

Racing continued to capitalise and replacement prop Colombe muscled his way over from close range for another converted try.

The visitors had no answer to Racing's power whenever they got within sight of the Ospreys line and number eight Tanga carried a couple of Welsh defenders over the line with him to score.

Namibia wing Klim at least capped his European debut for Ospreys with a try to ensure it was not all one-way traffic, his right-wing scamper matched by an excellent touchline conversion from Luke Price.

Price, on for McKenzie at fly-half, continued to impress as he took the scoring pass from Tom Williams to finish off another break on the right.

Venter added a fourth try to at least give Ospreys one point at the bottom of Pool Four, while the lively Klim claimed a deserved second of the night.

Ospreys forwards coach Carl Hogg told BBC Sport Wales:

"It was a bit of a rollercoaster out there. We came into this game talking about an attacking mind-set and I think early on we probably overplayed on the halfway area and gave away a couple of soft tries.

"But this group has shown over the past month or so they have real character and real desire to put things right.

"In the second half I think it was 40-5 at one point but we just kept going and still had that attacking intent. We set a target before we came here to score four tries and it's great to achieve that."

Racing 92: Zebo; Dupichot, Vakatawa, Chavancy (c), Imhoff; Volavola, Machenaud; Ben Arous, Baubigny, Gomes Sa, Ryan, Palu, Sanconnie, Chouzenoux, Tanga.

Scotland rugby union great Doddie Weir will be honoured with the Helen Rollason Award at the BBC Sports Personality of the Year show.

Weir, 49, was diagnosed with motor neurone disease (MND) in 2016.

The following year, he launched his charity, the My Name'5 Doddie Foundation, which seeks to aid research into the disease and improve the lives of those with MND.

The former Melrose and Newcastle Falcons lock won 61 caps for Scotland.

"I am honoured and humbled to receive the Helen Rollason award at this year's Sports Personality of the Year, especially when I look back at the remarkable individuals who have been recognised over the years," Weir said.

"My family and I are very much looking forward to attending the awards evening and celebrating another fantastic sporting year with friends and many of our sporting heroes."

Scotland second row Weir also represented the British and Irish Lions on their 1997 South Africa tour, and was famously described as being "on the charge like a mad giraffe" by commentator Bill McLaren.

In July 2019, he received an OBE from the Queen for services to rugby and to charity.

Weir will be presented with the award by the Princess Royal on Sunday.

"Doddie is an incredible recipient of this year's Helen Rollason award," said director of BBC Sport Barbara Slater.

"To come to terms with his own life changing diagnosis and channel his energy into raising over four million pounds to research the condition and a possible cure is nothing short of extraordinary."

The Helen Rollason Award recognises outstanding achievement in the face of adversity and was introduced to the show in 1999 in memory of the BBC Sport journalist and presenter, who died of cancer that year at the age of 43.

Previous winners of the award include Hillsborough disaster campaigner Anne Williams, charity marathon runner Ben Smith,Bradley Lowery and racing driver Billy Monger.

RCR Confirms Cup Series Crew Chief Lineup

Published in Racing
Friday, 13 December 2019 11:59

WELCOME, N.C. – Richard Childress Racing confirmed the crew chiefs who will be working with drivers Austin Dillon and Tyler Reddick in the NASCAR Cup Series on Friday afternoon.

After a breakout season with the No. 2 Xfinity Series championship team, Randall Burnett will once again team up with Reddick and lead him as a Sunoco Rookie of the Year candidate during the 2020 season.

Burnett, who has been atop the pit box at RCR for the last three years, spent time prior to that working with A.J. Allmendinger at JTG Daugherty Racing in the NASCAR Cup Series. He has led RCR drivers to one championship, six wins, 35 top-five finishes, 56 top-10 finishes, and six pole awards during his time as an RCR Xfinity Series crew chief.

Making the move to Cup is a well-deserved promotion for the Fenton, Mo., native.

“It’s exciting to be going back to the NASCAR Cup Series and continuing to work with Tyler next season,” said Burnett. “We had a lot of fun working together in the Xfinity Series while capturing the championship, so I’m looking forward to taking on the challenges of the Cup Series with him. Our goal is to win the Sunoco Rookie of the Year, which we’ll have some tough competition for next season, but also to get RCR back to the level of competition where I know we can be.

“We’d love to be competing in the top-five during the year and contending for wins, and I think it is possible if we put in the amount of work that I know we can,” Burnett added. “It’s going to be an exciting year for us all around, especially with great partners like Caterpillar on board the No. 8 Chevrolet.”

Justin Alexander, who spent the last year leading RCR’s R&D team, also looks forward to his crew chief position and leading two-time NASCAR champion Dillon in the No. 3 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE for the 2020 season.

Having found success with Dillon during the 2017 and 2018 seasons, Alexander feels that being back with the No. 3 team is the right move.

“It feels great to be teamed up with Austin again after a year of working in an R&D position,” said Alexander. “The relationship that we have been able to build over the years is one that I know can lead to more poles and wins.”

Alexander and Dillon have two marquee wins during their time together, the first coming at the well-known 2017 Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Just nine months later, the two found victory lane again in the kickoff to the 2018 NASCAR season, winning the 60th running of the Daytona 500 at Daytona Int’l Speedway.

“Both of these crew chiefs will complement each other because of their backgrounds, demeanors, and approaches to leading a team,” said RCR Vice President of Competition Andy Petree. “Randall and Justin are exactly who we need to bring both teams together to work as one, and due to the engineering backgrounds they both have, we’re looking forward to a strong 2020 season.”

Flyers' Lindblom has rare cancer, out for season

Friday, 13 December 2019 13:56

Philadelphia Flyers forward Oskar Lindblom has been diagnosed with Ewing's sarcoma, a rare type of bone cancer, and is expected to miss the rest of the 2019-20 season, the team announced Friday.

Lindblom, 23, will undergo further testing and evaluation next week and then begin treatment. The cancer was diagnosed by specialists at the University of Pennsylvania.

Ewing's sarcoma grows in the bones, or around the soft tissue around the bones. It primarily affects children and young adults.

The Flyers said they "will do everything possible to support Oskar and assist him in securing the best care available."

Lindblom has 11 goals and 7 assists in 30 games with the Flyers this season; he is tied with Travis Konecny for the team lead in goals. Lindblom missed the Flyers' last game with what the team called an upper body injury.

He had 17 goals and 16 assists last season, his first full campaign in the NHL. Lindblom, a native of Sweden, has 30 goals and 27 assists in 134 career games, all with the Flyers, who drafted him No. 138 overall in 2014.

Sources: Cespedes, Mets agree to amended deal

Yoenis Cespedes and the New York Mets have agreed on an amended contract, a source tells ESPN's Jeff Passan.

While he remains with the team, the settlement significantly lowers his salary from the planned $29.5 million. SNY was first to report news of the deal.

The 34-year-old didn't play all of last season while recovering from surgery to remove calcification on both of his heels. He's played just 119 games total since signing a four-year, $110 million deal before the 2017 season.

General manager Brodie Van Wagenen said last month that he was uncertain whether Cespedes would play in 2020.

Cespedes slashed .274/.328/.498 for his career and helped lead the Mets to the 2015 World Series and a 2016 playoff appearance.
