BBL previews: Adelaide Strikers and Brisbane Heat

Published in Cricket
Thursday, 12 December 2019 21:04

Adelaide Strikers

Captain: Travis Head

Coach: Jason Gillespie

Overseas players: Rashid Khan (Afghanistan), Phil Salt (England)

Full squad: Wes Agar, Alex Carey, Travis Head, Rashid Khan, Jake Lehmann, Michael Neser, Harry Nielsen, Liam O'Connor, Phil Salt, Matt Short, Peter Siddle, Billy Stanlake, Cameron Valente, Jake Weatherald, Jonathan Wells, Cameron White, Nick Winter, Harry Conway

Last season: 7th

The Strikers went from champions to second from bottom in a campaign that never really got off the ground with a four-game losing streak mid-season ending their hopes of a successful title defence.

What's changed for the season?

Gillespie has used his Sussex knowledge to bring in top-order batsman Salt, who briefly featured in the England T20I squad earlier this year. Ben Laughlin, a long-time part of the Strikers attack, has moved to the Brisbane Heat for family reasons, with Harry Conway coming into the squad. Cameron White, in what is likely to be the final fling of his career, brings winning experience from the Melbourne Renegades.

Australia impact

Head and possibly Michael Neser will be featuring in the Test side until early January, and Alex Carey will be lost to the ODI tour India mid-tournament. There is a chance that if Neser remains in the Test squad he could be released for BBL duty if not needed against New Zealand.

Player to watch

Wes Agar has been bowling very well in Marsh Cup and Sheffield Shield cricket this season and, after just two matches for the Strikers last summer, could get greater opportunity in this campaign particularly with the departure of Laughlin and if Neser is on Australia duty.

Key stat (Gaurav Sundararaman)

Rashid Khan's form might have dipped in other T20s and ODIs in 2019 but his performance in the Big Bash is extraordinary. In the last two seasons, Rashid has taken 37 wickets at an economy rate of 5.93 and 45% of his deliveries are dots.

Brisbane Heat

Captain: Chris Lynn

Coach: Darren Lehmann

Overseas players: Tom Banton (England - first eight games), AB de Villiers (South Africa - expected from January 9), Zahir Khan (Afghanistan), Mujeeb Ur Rahman (Afghanistan)

Full squad: Tom Banton, Max Bryant, Joe Burns, Ben Cutting, AB De Villiers (overseas replacement), Cameron Gannon, Sam Heazlett, Zahir Khan, Matthew Kuhnemann, Marnus Labuschagne, Ben Laughlin, Josh Lalor, Chris Lynn, James Pattinson, James Peirson, Jack Prestwidge, Matt Renshaw, Mark Steketee, Mitch Swepson, Mujeeb Ur Rahman (overseas replacement)

Last season: 5th

They had a lot of hype about them but failed to fire, missing the finals by a game. Their much-vaunted top order made a lot of bright starts but fizzled out quickly and the order was chopped and changed throughout the tournament. They saved their best work for the last two games with two magnificent chases but it was too little too late.

What's changed for the season?

A new coach and a few new bash brothers. Darren Lehmann, who led the Heat to the title in BBL02, takes charge again after Daniel Vettori stepped down. The signing of AB de Villiers and Tom Banton made a huge stir. They will play half the tournament each with de Villiers available for the finals. The Heat have the best batting line-up in the BBL but historically the best bowling teams have won the tournament and they will need to bowl well. Laughlin's return to Queensland from the Strikers having won a title in Adelaide is a nice addition.

Australia impact

James Pattinson's availability early in the tournament is subject to his Test duties but he could play more games than the Heat had planned for, given the form of Australia's incumbent Test quicks. Joe Burns and Marnus Labuschagne will be unavailable in the early part of the tournament but both may even struggle to get a game for the Heat given the batting depth. It is unlikely many Heat players will head to India with the ODI team, although Labuschagne was named joint player of the Marsh Cup and Australia may want to look at him in a second format if they experiment with the side.

Player to watch

Max Bryant is the obvious choice. He has so much potential but capitalising on starts and finding consistency as a young player is his biggest challenge. He has had a lean season in 50-over cricket for Queensland but a couple of early scores in the BBL and he could go have a huge tournament.

Key stat (Gaurav Sundararaman)

Tom Banton comes into this competition with very high expectations. Out of the 41 players to have faced 200 balls in powerplays in 2019, Banton has the best strike rate of 160. He scores big and at a brisk pace. The Gabba pitch could be perfect for Banton to showcase his skills.

Victoria batsman Jake Fraser-McGurk is one of three players with domestic experience to be named in Australia's 15-member Under-19 World Cup squad.

Fraser-McGurk, 17, made half-centuries on Sheffield Shield and List A debut for Victoria earlier this season, and has been named alongside fellow Victorian batsman Mackenzie Harvey, who played in the Melbourne Renegades' BBL triumph last season, and allrounder Liam Scott, who made his Shield debut for South Australia against Western Australia recently.

The squad also features New South Wales batsman Oliver Davies, who made headlines last summer after hitting six sixes in an over while scoring the first double-century in the history of Australia's boys' Under-19 championships.

Australia's squad will be coached by former Test opener Chris Rogers, with former Australia fast bowler Ryan Harris as his assistant.

Australia face West Indies, Nigeria, and England in their pool at the World Cup in South Africa. Australia have not won the Under-19 World Cup since 2010, which was their third triumph after the inaugural edition in 1988 and 2002.

Chastened Embiid powers 76ers past Celtics

Published in Basketball
Thursday, 12 December 2019 20:59

BOSTON -- Joel Embiid answered the criticism from a couple of Hall of Famers in the most productive way possible.

After Shaquille O'Neal and Charles Barkley said Embiid wasn't playing up to his potential, the 76ers center conceded that they were probably right. Then he produced one of his best games of the season: a season-high 38 points along with 13 rebounds in a 115-109 victory over the Boston Celtics on Thursday night.

"All of the stuff he has been dealing with he handled like an adult, with humility. And he responded in a dramatic way,'' Philadelphia coach Brett Brown said. "He was dominant, was a leader and one of his best games as a Sixer.''

Embiid scored 16 points in the fourth quarter, hitting 5 of 6 free throws in the final 26 seconds after Boston scored seven straight points to erase most of a nine-point deficit. With Philadelphia leading by four in the final 15 seconds, he blocked Daniel Theis' shot to help clinch it.

Earlier in the week, Barkley said Embiid is the toughest matchup in the league, but he doesn't take advantage of it. O'Neal said on the TNT broadcast that Embiid shouldn't settle for 22 points a game, his current average, but should aim for more like 28 or 30.

"I like when I get criticized,'' Embiid said after the game. "For them to say I have the potential to be the best player in the world, and I haven't shown that yet, I need to play harder.''

Celtics center Enes Kanter said he approached Embiid during the game and told him not to worry about the criticism.

"He's one of the best big men in the league,'' said Kanter, who scored a season-high 20 points with nine rebounds. "I told him, 'Hey, don't worry about it.' I told him to just go out and play your game.''

Tobias Harris had 23 points, eight rebounds and seven assists for the Sixers, who won their fourth consecutive game and their eighth in nine tries.

Kemba Walker scored 29 points for Boston, which lost at home for the first time all season. Gordon Hayward scored 19.

LATE RUNS

After helping the Sixers hang around for three quarters, Embiid dragged them to a 106-97 lead with just over two minutes left. Walker hit three free throws, then Kanter scored on a tip-in and Hayward hit a fallaway jumper to make it 106-104 with 61 seconds left.

It was 110-106 when Jayson Tatum made a rainbow 3-pointer over Embiid to make it a one-point game.

But Embiid hit his foul shots, and then gave the 76ers a stop on defense to help them pull two games ahead of rival Boston in the Eastern Conference.

"In the fourth quarter, I haven't been the closer these guys have needed me to be this whole season,'' Embiid said.

EARLY LEAD

Walker scored 12 points in the first quarter, when the Celtics opened an eight-point lead before Philadelphia scored eight in a row to tie it. Boston scored the final six points of the first and the first basket of the second to make it 36-28, but that lead didn't last, either.

It was a three-point game at halftime, then back and forth in the third before the Sixers began to pull away in the fourth.

TIP-INS

Sixers: Former Celtic Al Horford sat out the game with left knee and hamstring injuries. He received a standing ovation when he was shown on the scoreboard, and he acknowledged the crowd with a wave. Horford spent three seasons with Boston before opting out of his contract and signing with Philadelphia as a free agent last summer.

Celtics: Marcus Smart (eye) and Robert Williams (hip) both missed Wednesday's game at Indiana and both were unavailable against the 76ers. ... Hayward missed 13 games with a broken left hand, then got hit in the nose in his second game back, on Wednesday at Indiana. He was back in the starting lineup a night later, playing 37 minutes.

UP NEXT

Sixers: Host the Pelicans on Friday.

Celtics: At Dallas on Wednesday.

Top seeds in trouble!

Well who saw this coming? Chen Meng is down 1-3 to Qian Tianyi and the 16th seed is the one looking like sealing the deal here! Her off the net shots have dominated the world no.1, who really needs to pull herself together to have any chance of progressing!

For the top seed it is a similar situation – Sun Yingsha is now 1-2 (11-7, 9-11, 9-11) down versus 13th seed He Zhuojia. Are we about to see a double upset in the Chinese domestic?

Tianyi hits back, Sun starts well

Its a double domestic for the Chinese, as Qian Tianyi hit back against Chen Meng and has now a 2-1 (7-11, 11-8, 12-10) lead over the world no.1 athlete.

Over at the table, Sun Yingsha has just won her first game against compatriot He Zhuojia (11-7) and will look to push on from this to complete a swift win.

Ito claims epic win, Chen in control

In an epic conclusion, Mima Ito secured a momentous win over Cheng I-Ching (10-12, 11-6, 7-11, 11-4, 4-11, 11-3, 12-10), with the contest lasting over 56 minutes. Both athletes were in complete tandem against each other, winning a game each but the momentum of the sixth game for Ito secured the seventh and the match.

“I lost to her at Austria Open so I really wanted to win this time. Actually I performed normally. I had my chances today. It was really tough to lose. Mima Ito is very strong. I can feel she makes changes every time I play against her.” Cheng I-Ching

The world no. 1 Chen Meng is in fine form over at table 2, winning the first game 11-5 against Chinese compatriot Qian Tianyi.

Decider begins for Cheng and Ito

Japan’s Mima Ito has swung this match back and forth between her and Chinese Taipei’s Cheng I-Ching enough times to call it a pendulum – with a 3-3 score, the decider has begun.

Ito has looked the stronger of the two athletes on the counter attack, but Cheng is picking her moments to strike back at will. Who goes through to the quarter-finals?

Feng exits, Ito and Cheng battle

Chen Xingtong has completed a comprehensive 4-0 (11-3, 11-7, 11-9, 11-5) win over Feng Tianwei which means after Ding Ning’s exit yesterday, another major veteran has just been eliminated from the Grand Tour Finals.

“Feng has been making progress in recent times. She played really well in the previous encounters with my teammates Zhu Yuling and Chen Meng. I did not expect that I could take the match 4-0. I was prepared that today’s match could go into the deciding games.” Chen Xingtong

Meanwhile, Mima Ito and Cheng I-Ching are now locked at 2-2, with neither athlete in the mood to give up or back off – are we headed to a decider?

Favorites make stumbling start

Singapore’s Feng Tianwei will need to pull her socks up going forward today, as she lost the first two games to China’s Chen Xingtong (11-3, 11-7).

Over at table 2, Japan’s Mima Ito also lost the early lead against Chinese Taipei’s Cheng I-Ching, who surprised her by winning the game 12-10, having been 9-10 down. Having the levelled the scores since then (11-6), will Ito make a proper comeback?

Watch: Reed jabs back at Aussie crowd with shovel dig

Patrick Reed took some ribbing on Day 1 of the Presidents Cup and he gave some back on Day 2. But he didn't get the last laugh.

Reed was mocked by Australian fans at Royal Melbourne in relation to his sand controversy at last week's Hero World Challenge. During Friday's foursomes matches, Reed, paired for the second consecutive session with Webb Simpson, made a birdie putt at the par-4 11th. As he was putting, someone in the crowded shouted: "Miss!"

Reed responded with this:

Unfortunately for Reed, Marc Leishman also made birdie to tie the hole and keep the International team of he and Abraham Ancer 2 up. The Internationals won the next hole to go 3 up with six to play.

LSU QB Burrow wins Maxwell, O'Brien awards

Published in Breaking News
Thursday, 12 December 2019 19:35

Heisman Trophy favorite Joe Burrow will arrive in New York for Saturday's ceremony with a few new lines on his resume.

The LSU quarterback was honored Thursday at the 2019 Home Depot College Football Awards with the Maxwell and Davey O'Brien awards, given to the best overall player and best quarterback in college football, respectively.

In both cases, he beat out a pair of fellow Heisman finalists to win. Oklahoma quarterback Jalen Hurts was a finalist for both awards, while Ohio State defensive end Chase Young (Maxwell) and Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields (O'Brien) were finalists for the ones at their positions.

Before the show began, Burrow was also named the Walter Camp Player of the Year and earlier in the day the Associated Press named him its player of the year.

Here are the other individual awards whose winners were announced Thursday night during the show:

Doak Walker Award: Wisconsin running back Jonathan Taylor beat out Oklahoma State's Chuba Hubbard and Ohio State's J.K. Dobbins to become the first back-to-back winner since Arkansas' Darren McFadden in 2006-07.

Fred Biletnikoff Award: LSU wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase, the nation's leader in receiving yards (1,498) and touchdowns (18), was voted the winner over Oklahoma's CeeDee Lamb and USC's Michael Pittman.

Outland Trophy: Oregon sophomore offensive tackle Penei Sewell was honored as the best interior lineman. He beat out Wisconsin center Tyler Biadasz, the Rimington Trophy winner given to the top center, and Auburn defensive tackle Derrick Brown.

Chuck Bednarik Award: Ohio State's Young was named the best defensive player in college football. The Heisman finalist leads the nation with 16.5 sacks was honored ahead of Clemson linebacker Isaiah Simmons and Auburn's Brown.

Jim Thorpe Award: Junior safety Grant Delpit became the third LSU player in the last 10 years to be named the nation's top defensive back, joining Patrick Peterson (2010) and Morris Claiborne (2011). He beat out Georgia safety J.R. Reed and Ohio State cornerback Jeff Okudah.

Lou Groza Award: Georgia's Rodrigo Blankenship connected on 25 of 31 field goals, including 11 from 40-plus yards to win the award. Iowa's Keith Duncan and Washington State's Blake Mazza were the other finalists.

Ray Guy Award: Former Australian Rules Football player Max Duffy of Kentucky took home the award after he averaged 45.13 net yards per punt. He beat out Syracuse's Sterling Hofrichter and Houston's Dane Roy.

Jackson breaks Vick's single-season rush record

Published in Breaking News
Thursday, 12 December 2019 17:33

BALTIMORE -- Baltimore Ravens star Lamar Jackson set the most impressive record of his young NFL career on Thursday night, breaking Michael Vick's single-season rushing mark by a quarterback.

Jackson, the electric, dual-threat quarterback and NFL Most Valuable Player front-runner, eclipsed his childhood idol in the first quarter against the heavy underdog New York Jets on a chilly night at M&T Bank Stadium. He entered the game needing 23 yards to surpass Vick's mark of 1,039, set in 2006, and gained 27 on Baltimore's opening drive, breaking the record on a 5-yard run after a fake to Mark Ingram. He got around the right corner before taking a hard hit that landed him on his back.

The Fox broadcast later cut to a taped segment of Vick congratulating Jackson.

"Lamar, I just want to say congratulations on making history," Vick said. "One of many milestones that you will surpass in your career. Best of luck in everything that you do. You deserve it. Keep up the hard work, and I'll always be rooting for you."

With the way Jackson has run the ball this season -- from his spinning around two defenders on a touchdown run in Cincinnati to juking defenders off their feet on a weekly basis -- it had long been anticipated that Jackson would shatter Vick's record. Jackson recently said it would be "an honor" to surpass Vick, reiterating that the four-time Pro Bowl quarterback is his favorite player.

Jackson established the new standard for rushing quarterbacks in staggering style, doing so in his 14th game of the 2019 season (which includes not playing a full fourth quarter in four games). He entered Thursday's game as the leading rusher for the NFL's No. 1 ground attack and on pace to rush for 1,251 yards rushing this season.

Jackson, 22, broke the record despite not being at full strength. He was limited in a couple of practices this week and was listed as questionable after injuring his quadriceps five days earlier in a 24-17 victory over the Buffalo Bills.

What makes Jackson's achievement even more special is that no one previously got close to Vick's record, which stood for 13 years. Before Jackson began sprinting past tacklers, the most rushing yards by a quarterback since 2006 came from Russell Wilson, who ran for 849 yards in 2014 -- which were 190 yards shy of Vick's record. Last month, Vick acknowledged he didn't think his record would ever get broken.

Jackson and Vick are the only quarterbacks to reach 1,000 yards rushing in a season, but they reached that milestone in different ways. Vick's rushing yards were a near-even split between designed runs (52%) and scrambles (48%), according to ESPN Stats & Information research. With Jackson, 65% of his rushing total is off designed runs, most of which come on zone reads.

Jackson has repeatedly downplayed any individual milestones, saying his focus is on winning. But Jackson's running has been a major key to Baltimore's success. When Jackson has run for at least 70 yards in his career, the Ravens are 12-0 (entering Thursday's game).

Woody: If Lamar Jackson runs, he is going to get hit

Damien Woody dismisses Earl Thomas' complaints that referees need to do more to protect Lamar Jackson from dangerous hits.

What sets Jackson apart from Vick is his ability to also beat teams with his arm. In Vick's record-setting season, he threw for 2,474 yards and 20 touchdowns (75.7 passer rating). Through 13 games, Jackson had already surpassed those numbers, passing for 2,677 yards and 28 touchdowns (109.2 rating). He could become the first quarterback in NFL history to finish a season with 1,000 yards rushing and a passer rating over 100.

This isn't the first time Jackson passed a mark of Vick's. On Dec. 1, against the San Francisco 49ers, Jackson recorded his fourth 100-yard rushing game of the season, breaking a single-season record Vick shared. Last month, Jackson became the fastest quarterback ever in the Madden video-game franchise, with a 96 speed rating, moving him past Vick (who had a 95 speed rating).

Jackson's popularity has exploded in his first full season as an NFL starting quarterback. He is the current favorite to win NFL MVP, with 9-to-1 odds at Caesars Sportsbook. He tops all players in Pro Bowl balloting. He also watched one of his autographed No. 8 jerseys get presented to Pope Francis a couple of weeks ago.

Jackson has led the Ravens to the best start in franchise history. Baltimore (11-2), which entered Thursday as the AFC's top seed, can clinch its second consecutive AFC North title with a win over the Jets.
