Man Utd need more attack options - Solskjaer

Published in Soccer
Thursday, 12 December 2019 15:42

MANCHESTER, England -- Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer still intends to strengthen his attack despite Mason Greenwood's emergence this season.

Greenwood scored twice as United secured top spot in their Europa League group with a comfortable 4-0 win over AZ Alkmaar. The 18-year-old now has six goals in seven starts this term but Solskjaer is still on the look out for a striker.

"We're looking to strengthen in many positions," said Solskjaer. "If you look at our squad compared to others we're getting there but we need two or three players to have a squad with enough numbers to rotate throughout a long season and we'll see what we sign."

The bulk of Greenwood's minutes this season have come in the Europa League but after handing the teenager a first Premier League start of the season against Tottenham, Solskjaer insists he is ready for a prolonged run in the team.

"He played against Tottenham and he was class," said Solskjaer. "I'm not afraid of playing him in the Premier League, not at all. It is about sharing minutes and finding the right minutes. He is ready to play in Premier League."

Greenwood has work to do to displace either Anthony Martial or Marcus Rashford in Solskjaer's first XI but with a hectic Christmas schedule approaching, the United boss will be forced to rotate.

"I've probably said it all before, that's what he [Mason] does," said Solskjaer. "Tomorrow [Friday] he will probably go into training and score a few more. He has always done it.

"That is just natural for him. He is a natural footballer. The closer he gets to goal the more dangerous he is. Right-foot, left-foot, he is a nightmare for defenders.

"He needs to develop his heading. Then he can be a proper striker.

"I've seen a few good ones, I played with Wazza [Wayne Rooney], natural finishing he's one of the best I've seen."

Man United youth take advantage of Europa League opportunity

Published in Soccer
Thursday, 12 December 2019 15:46

MANCHESTER, England -- The gaps in the crowd at Old Trafford on Thursday were proof enough of Manchester United fans' attitude towards the Europa League. A cold night in December and a game with nothing riding on it does not help, but there is no escaping the fact that whether it's the supporters, players or even Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, no one really wanted to be here.

Thursday night football in the Europa League represents a failure for a club of United's size. It is a reminder that they weren't good enough to qualify for the Champions League, Europe's premier club competition, and have been forced to settle for second best. There is a reason why the value of United's multi-million-pound deal with kit manufacturer Adidas will drop by 20 percent if they miss out on Champions League football for two consecutive seasons.

The bright side, though, is that for now at least the Europa League suits Solskjaer.

With qualification from Group L secured after just four games, the United manager had the luxury of resting every senior player bar Jesse Lingard and Luke Shaw for the gruelling 6,000-mile round trip to FC Astana. Against AZ Alkmaar at Old Trafford, Solskjaer was able to give David De Gea, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Victor Lindelof, Scott McTominay, Daniel James and Marcus Rashford the night off. In their place were Brandon Williams, Axel Tuanzebe, James Garner and Mason Greenwood.

And therein lies the silver lining of a campaign in the Europa League: Solskjaer has been able to give his young players a chance.

Greenwood, in particular, took his against Alkmaar. With United already leading 1-0 thanks to a rare Ashley Young goal, Garner won the ball back in midfield and Greenwood lashed a right-footed drive past Marco Bizot from 20 yards.

Four minutes later, the 18-year-old was brought down in the box by former Southampton man Jordy Clasie and Juan Mata dispatched the penalty. Only another two minutes had done by when Greenwood jinked with way to inside the penalty area and beat Bizot at his near post, this time with his left foot.

Terrace chants are not always dependent of the truth, but "Mason Greenwood is dynamite, he scores them with his left foot and score them with his right" is fairly accurate.

Greenwood has scored six goals this season -- in just seven starts -- and four of them have come in the Europa League. The experience he's gotten in European competition meant Solskjaer felt comfortable handing him a first Premier League start of the season against Tottenham. It's unlikely that would have happened without the Europa League.

Just like UEFA's foreigners rule enforced during United's early campaigns in the Champions League handed chances to young players like Nicky Butt, Gary Neville and David Beckham, the latest batch of academy graduates are benefiting from a season away from the Champions League glare.

"You've got to make the most of the situation you're in and we knew this year was going to be one in the Europa League," Solskjaer said after the 4-0 win ensured United finished top of Group L. "They've had some great experience, these kids. They're developing and learning. They need games against men.

"The Under-23 league can only take you so far. They've taken massive strides forward. The Europa League has helped players like Brandon establish himself because you forget that he didn't even come on the preseason tour."

The question for Solskjaer now is how he handles the rest of the competition.

United know only too well that it provides a route back into the Champions League, having won it under Jose Mourinho in 2017. Fifth in the Premier League table and five points adrift of the top four, Solskjaer will have to balance progress in the Europa League and handing his youngsters more experience.

For now, the Norwegian is insisting the kids have earned the right to play against whoever comes out of the hat in Monday's draw for the round of 32, but heavyweights like Ajax and Inter Milan are likely to lurk in the latter rounds.

"The young players have not put a foot wrong," said Solskjaer. "They have not given me any reason not to play them. It depends on who's injured and who needs games. They needed games, but I felt quite confident we would win the group."

Solskjaer will hope this is his last season in the Europa League, but he has reason to be grateful for it this term. If it provides a springboard for the likes of Greenwood, Tuanzebe, Garner and Williams to become part of the next successful United team, then it will have served an important purpose. The Europa League is certainly not the height of European football, but it has got Solskjaer and his young guns flying.

Garrett hopes 'highlight reel' ends Cowboys' slide

Published in Breaking News
Thursday, 12 December 2019 14:17

FRISCO, Texas -- In an attempt to shake his team out of a three-game losing streak, Cowboys coach Jason Garrett took time during Monday's team meeting to show players some successful plays from the past two seasons.

"It was like a highlight reel," right tackle La'el Collins said. "They were all fantastic plays. Everything went well on them, offense and defense. So it just shows the type of team we have, the players we have. It's just putting it all together so that you see what it looks like when we do it the right way."

Garrett made a similar move after the Cowboys lost three games in a row after their 3-0 start to the season. The team responded with their most complete game of the season in a 37-20 victory against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Among the plays shown was last season's goal-line tackle of Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson by Jaylon Smith, Xavier Woods and Jeff Heath. Another was Dak Prescott's third-down, head-over-heels run in the playoff win against the Seattle Seahawks.

"I think he's just trying to convey that there's a way in which we need to play," tight end Jason Witten said. "We haven't played to the level that we expect, and I think it was just a reminder of, 'this is how we play.' A lot of that is like, whether you know football or not, look at these guys and how they're playing. It was a good reminder to start the week with 'this is who we are.'"

At 6-7, the Cowboys are in first place in the NFC East over the Eagles. Even if Dallas were to lose to the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday, the Cowboys would still be in a position to win the division and earn a playoff spot with wins in Weeks 16 and 17 against Philadelphia and the Washington Redskins, respectively.

"We got to get a win and we got to play well, simple as that," Prescott said. "Yeah, according to the playoffs and all that, [a win or loss] doesn't [matter], I guess. But if we want to give ourselves a chance to win -- and to win as we finish this season out and to win in that tournament -- as you get there, you got to get momentum going.

"Momentum is something serious. And if we can get it on our side, this has been a streaky team and, yes, you got to get that first one to get the second one. That's just the mindset: Let's focus on today, let's focus on the now, let's focus on this week and not worry about the rest. We'll worry about that when it comes."

Reports: Ex-Reds infielder Peraza to join Red Sox

Published in Baseball
Thursday, 12 December 2019 13:48

The Red Sox have agreed to a one-year deal with free-agent infielder Jose Peraza, according to a report Thursday by Robert Murray.

Peraza likely will fill a utility spot for a Boston team that isn't expected to bring back free agent Brock Holt.

The 25-year-old Peraza spent the past four seasons with the Reds. Known for his good eye at the plate, he hit .288 with 85 runs scored, 14 home runs and 23 steals in 2018, but those numbers dipped some this past season, when he posted a .239-37-6-7 line.

He was nontendered by the Reds earlier this month.

Peraza will bring versatility to the Red Sox's defense. Since breaking into the big leagues in 2015, he's played at least five games at every non-pitching position but first base, right field and catcher.

MLB Network reported that the deal is close to $3 million plus incentives.

Ford Extends Support Of Tasca Racing

Published in Racing
Thursday, 12 December 2019 12:10

DEARBORN, Mich. – Ford Performance, along with the Ford Customer Service Division and its brands Motorcraft and Quick Lane, have signed a multiyear deal with NHRA team owner and driver Bob Tasca III.

The new agreement extends a long relationship with Tasca’s Mustang Funny Car operation.

Thursday’s announcement comes on the heels of one of Tasca’s most successful seasons of his career. In 2019, the Motorcraft/Quick Lane team won two races in four final-round appearances in NHRA Drag Racing’s premier Mello Yello Series.

That effort, combined with an appearance in the NHRA playoffs, was a monumental feat for a team that just came back to full-time competition last year.

“It was my commitment to all of the fans and supporters of Ford that wanted to bring the Blue Oval back to professional drag racing to deliver a championship-level program,” Tasca said. “I’ve never been prouder of my team and the effort that was put in to deliver on the commitment that we would win and compete for a championship. We took the championship fight right down to Pomona this year. To be starting 2020 with a contract extension from Ford, with (crew chiefs) Jon Schaffer and Mike Neff leading an extremely talented crew, I’ve never been more excited to start a season.”

“We’re very excited about the competitive progress the NHRA program showed in the first year with the new Mustang body,” added Mark Rushbrook, Global Director, Ford Performance Motorsports. “Our goal is always to be championship-capable, and Tasca Racing was in the hunt for the title until the final race this year. We’re supportive of the new co-crew chief relationship with the team and are confident the technical collaboration between Ford Performance and team will lead to an even better 2020 season.”

Tasca finished fifth in the championship points standings this season. It was a news-filled year for Tasca, who reunited Neff and Schaffer as crew chiefs and reset both ends of his career bests in a brand-new Mustang body designed by Ford Performance.

His best marks for the 1,000-foot course now sit at 3.855 seconds (St. Louis) and 335.32 mph (Reading, Pa.).

The team sponsor relationship with the Motorcraft and Quick Lane brands will extend FCSD’s long support of the NHRA and the opportunity to reach its passionate fans.

“Bob has such great insight into what our goals are and has been terrific in helping us get the message out that there are jobs available at our Ford and Lincoln dealerships to the right audiences,” said Jasmine Pendleton, Marketing Manager for FCSD. “That skill is invaluable in a spokesman and we are happy to have him.”

Drydene Steps Up To Sponsor Scott Bloomquist Racing

Published in Racing
Thursday, 12 December 2019 12:41

INDIANAPOLIS – Drydene continued its support of grassroots racing on Thursday by announcing a sponsorship agreement with Scott Bloomquist Racing during the PRI Trade Show

The agreement will see Drydene become the primary sponsor of Chris Madden’s No. 0M and a major sponsor of team owner Scott Bloomquist’s No. 0. Both competitors will race full-time with the World of Outlaws Morton Buildings Late Model Series beginning with the season opening event on Jan. 3-5 at Vado (N.M.) Speedway Park.

Madden, who began driving for Scott Bloomquist Racing earlier this year after parting ways with Skyline Motorsports, narrowly missed out on the series championship two years ago and is hoping to turn the sponsorship agreement with Drydene into his first national touring title.

“This is a big step for us. We really appreciate Dave (Klinger of Drydene) and his company coming on board to make it happen,” said Madden. “Ever since we started this deal (with Bloomquist) we’ve been trying to figure out what we’re going to do. That seemed to be the question every week. Are we going to build cars? Am I going to continue to race as a team with them or am I going back out on my own?

“It was kind of up in the air and then when this deal came on board it just kind of answered all the questions,” Madden said. “Thanks to Drydene for coming on and helping us figure out what we’re going to do.”

Bloomquist, who was not present for the announcement Thursday in Indianapolis because of a scheduling conflict, won the 2004 series championship in his most recent full season with the tour. The winner of more than 600 features has been a regular with the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series for the last several seasons.

“It’s exciting,” Bloomquist said in a press release. “I have such a high-percentage win ratio for my first visits to tracks. It’s in the 70-some percent. There’s a number of tracks I haven’t been to, and I like that, that’s exciting to me. If I can come back and pull off a championship that would be awesome. Hopefully one of us will.”

Drydene has been heavily involved in motorsports sponsorship for the last two years. The company is the primary sponsor of Shark Racing drivers Logan Schuchart and Jacob Allen in the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series. The company also sponsored Brent Larson in the World of Outlaws Morton Buildings Late Model Series and Corey LaJoie during a NASCAR Cup Series race at Dover (Del.) Int’l Speedway this year.

It was announced last week that Drydene would also sponsor Ricky Weiss for the full World of Outlaws Morton Buildings Late Model Series schedule next year, giving Drydene three opportunities to claim the series championship as a sponsor with Weiss, Madden and Bloomquist.

Dave Klinger, president of Drydene Performance Products, explained that they saw a synergy between Scott Bloomquist Racing and Shark Racing that made working with the Bloomquist camp an easy decision.

“You have Bobby Allen, who is a legendary, and then you have Logan (Schuchart), who has been racing real well as a contender. He’s contending all the time to win. Then you have Jacob (Allen) looking for that first win,” Klinger explained. “When we started looking at it and we had an interest at looking who we were going to team with, it all started coming together.

“Scott Bloomquist, who is obviously still racing, but is very much like Bobby Allen. He’s a legend in the sport. You have Chris Madden, who is looking for that first national series championship, as is Logan. Then you have Ricky, who is new to the World of Outlaws and this level racing and hasn’t won with the World of Outlaws. We said wow, there is such a parallel with Shark Racing and Scott Bloomquist Racing.”

Saka 8/10 as Arsenal draw, top Europa League group

Published in Soccer
Thursday, 12 December 2019 12:52

Arsenal ended their Europa League Group F campaign by drawing 2-2 with Standard Liege, who surrendered a two-goal lead to deny themselves a chance in the competition's knockout phase.

Freddie Ljungberg's side were rather unfortunate to twice concede from deflected shots, but the all-action Bukayo Saka rescued a point for the Gunners by producing an assist and a goal.

Arsenal's point earned them top spot in Group F after Frankfurt spectacularly lost to Vitoria SC, who scored two late goals to win 3-2.

Positives

London-born teenagers Bukayo Saka and Emile Smith Rowe can leave Belgium with their heads held high.

Saka in particular carried the Gunners through the later parts of the second half and was rewarded with a spectacular assist and equally eye-catching goal to equalise.

Meanwhile, Smith Rowe's injection of pace aided the visitors' options moving forward.

Negatives

Woeful decision-making when playing out from back could've more than once resulted in Ljungberg's side conceding an embarrassing goal in the first half.

Arsenal's midfielders also struggled to retain possession while Lacazette's generally ineffective movement in front hardly inspired free-flowing play.

Manager rating (out of 10)

6-- Switched formation midway through the second half to play with a back four, a tweak which worked a treat as Arsenal went on to rescue a consolation point.

That said, Ljungberg had mostly young Saka's individual efforts to thank as the Gunners rallied from 2-0 down.

Player ratings (1-10; 10 = best, players introduced after 70 minutes get no rating)

GK Emiliano Martinez, 4 -- Poor first-half decision-making invited Standard to press Arsenal's back three and more than once, Martinez was caught making rash late decisions that were to the detriment of his team's ability to move possession forwards.

DF Sokratis Papastathopoulos, 4 -- Declined the opportunity to close down Samuel Bastien ahead of Standard's fortuitous opening goal. Like his defensive colleagues, his decision-making when playing out from the back was well short of the expected standard.

DF David Luiz, 5 -- Was evidently frustrated by the work of those in front of him and to say he carried some Arsenal players through the game would be fair. Passing improved as the game went on, though he wasn't immune to a trademark defensive error or two.

DF Konstantinos Mavropanos, 4 -- Would've wanted to make a bigger impact on his European debut having been limited to only EFL Trophy appearances this term. Poor when passing out from the back epitomised a poor performance from the Greek.

MF Ainsley Maitland-Niles, 4 -- Made rash decisions when under very little pressure to gift Standard possession when play really should've been moved forward. Neglected potentially dangerous runs to ease the hosts' pressure in their own half.

MF Matteo Guendouzi, 5 -- Became the pantomime villain to the home supporters when embarrassingly falling to ground while clutching his face, despite video replays proving no contact. Tackles were mis-timed and his movement in front of the back three hardly inspired forward play.

MF Joe Willock, 4 -- Worked hard in midfield to win back the ball, but flopped when it came to consistency. A dreadful error in the build-up to Standard's second goal did little to help his score -- and that error followed an early trend where possession was squandered far too easily.

MF Bukayo Saka, 8 -- Arsenal's star man on the night, though he must be more clinical in front of goal -- particularly when presented as many clear-cut chances as he had this evening. In the positive column, his runs were well-timed and executed professionally, and he was ultimately rewarded with a goal and an assist.

MF Reiss Nelson, 5 -- Did well on occasion to win possession from unfavourable positions but often gave possession away cheaply, most notably when Bastien was allowed a clear sight on goal to shoot and then score.

MF Emile Smith Rowe, 6 -- Injected a certain burst of energy into the Gunners on the right wing that aided the visitors' ability to open play up. Unlucky not to score when an early shot was toe-poked wide, but he generally lacked support.

FW Alexandre Lacazette, 5 -- Generally, didn't do the job a proven goalscorer should in the Europa League. Loose with possession, and his first touch wasn't the best either but it was his sloppy build-up play that was the most frustrating thing on the evening. Salvaged a five thanks to poaching a late goal.

Substitutes

FW Gabriel Martinelli, 6 -- Wasn't influential in either of his side's goals, but contributed enough in midfield to help peg the hosts back.

DF Calum Chambers, N/R -- Solid work defensively to block out Standard.

FW Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang N/R -- Came on in the concluding minutes and had little time to impact the game and grab Arsenal a winner.

Browns' Landry: I know OBJ wants to be here

Published in Breaking News
Thursday, 12 December 2019 12:19

BEREA, Ohio - Browns wide receiver Jarvis Landry said Thursday that teammate Odell Beckham Jr. wants to stay in Cleveland, despite reports and speculation that OBJ is looking for a way out.

"I think he wants to be here," Landry said. "I know he wants to be here."

Sunday morning, Fox Sports reported during its NFL pregame show that Beckham has been telling opposing players and coaches before games, "come get me" out of Cleveland.

Beckham, who declined comment on the report after Cleveland's win over the Cincinnati Bengals, had fueled speculation days earlier when he was vague about his future with the Browns beyond the 2019 season.

"No one knows what the future holds, like tomorrow," Beckham said then, when asked whether he wanted to be in Cleveland next year. "I couldn't tell you what's going to happen."

Landry, one of Beckham's closest friends dating back to when the two played together at LSU, was more definitive, even joking that he would "beat his a--" if Beckham were confiding in other people and not him.

"He doesn't want to leave, and he's not trying to leave," Landry said.

Beckham has gone seven consecutive games without topping 100 receiving yards, the longest such streak of his career. He has also been playing through a hip and groin injury, which has hampered how much he can practice during the week and has limited his explosiveness in games.

"It's not even about trying to go somewhere else," Landry said. "I think for him, he's been a leader, he's a guy that comes to work every day, he's a guy that's playing through injuries, all the things you want out of a player. Inside of this organization, he has a voice, he has responsibility to himself, to all of us, to go out there and compete each and every Sunday, and he does that."

Beckham has only two touchdowns, as he and quarterback Baker Mayfield have struggled to find a consistent connection in their first year together. Mayfield defended Beckham after Sunday's game, saying that the injury "wasn't handled right" by the team's training staff (Mayfield later apologized and said he didn't intend "to throw our medical staff under the bus").

Wednesday, Mayfield was also asked whether he thinks Beckham wants to be in Cleveland long term.

"I can't answer that for him," Mayfield said. "I mean, there's all the rumors going around. But I have my conversations with him and I know what we talk about, so I trust him wholeheartedly."
