Royals sign ex-All-Star Rosenthal to minors deal

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Kansas City Royals signed former All-Star reliever Trevor Rosenthal to a $2 million minor league contract that includes an invitation to big league spring training and up to $2.25 million in bonuses if he makes the major league roster.

The 29-year-old Rosenthal was dismal with the Detroit Tigers and Washington Nationals last season, going 0-1 with a 13.50 ERA in 22 appearances. It was a far cry from his 2015 form, when Rosenthal had a 2.10 ERA and 48 saves while helping the St. Louis Cardinals to a 100-win season and the NL Central title.

Rosenthal will be reunited with new Royals manager Mike Matheny, who was the manager in St. Louis during his best seasons.

Rosenthal has 121 saves and a 3.45 ERA in seven big league seasons. He also was part of the 2013 Cardinals team that lost to the Boston Red Sox in the World Series.

Who will pass the stiff European Cross test?

Athletes ready for a real challenge on a Lisbon course which looks set to provide an incident-packed day of racing at Bella Vista Park

European Athletics president Svein Arne Hansen described the venue for this year’s SPAR European Cross Country Championships as  “the most beautiful course I’ve ever seen” and the Bella Vista Park course has received the thumbs up from many of the athletes who are getting ready to compete in Lisbon.

There are twists, tight turns, many ups and a few tricky downs to negotiate throughout an undeniably arduous circuit which will prove to be a real test not only of ability but also endurance.

The downhill section which closes each lap and from which competitors will have to control their jelly legs as they finally hit the flat finishing straight could provide plenty of incident and may well see a few positions change hands as the races reach their climax.

British mountain and ultra marathon runner Tom Evans, making his debut at these championships after a remarkable performance at the UK trials in Liverpool, is a man used to dealing with a climb or two and he offered an interesting perspective.

“It’s dry so in theory it’s going to be fast but it’s very hilly and I think it’s all going to be about race management,” he said. “If you are efficient running downhill – where you’re still going fast but you’re actually recovering – that’s how to run this race.

“There will be people who haven’t run downhill who will think ‘actually I’m just going to throw myself down it’, arms going everywhere but in that situation your heart rate is actually probably going to go up and you’ll have no respite at all.

“It’s really cool course and I think it really suits a slower runner who has the confidence to be a minute behind the lead group at halfway.”

Evans’ compatriot Charlotte Arter, seventh in the senior women’s race in Tilburg last year and an athlete intent on improving on that performance, said: “The hills will hopefully suit me and I think it’s great that it’s a really testing course – it’s how cross country should be. There are no man-made obstacles – it’s just what the park has got to offer so I think it will be exciting.”

That was a view echoed by British team captain Adam Hickey, who said: “It’s a proper cross country course – and one us Brits should do well on. There are proper undulations and plenty of climbs, as well as a few downhill so it should be quite a full-on race.”

The presence of athletes such as European 10,000m and half-marathon record holder Julien Wanders merely adds to the intrigue. The Swiss is aiming to becoming his country’s first ever male European Cross medallist and knows he will have his work cut out, but he is far from daunted given where he trains in Kenya.

“In Iten it is hilly everywhere – there are no flat roads really,” says Wanders, who last competed at these championships as a junior. “I don’t know if my style of running is suitable for that, but I’m ready for that.

“I like to change my preparation, to not do the same and feel like I’m falling into a routine every year, so I thought after Doha (the IAAF World Championships) ‘what can I do to change my winter season?’ and I just decided it could be a good challenge for me to go back to cross country. I know I enjoyed it when I was younger and it feels good for me to be back in cross country.”

It looks like being one to remember.

Ospreys lose to Racing as nightmare start continues

Published in Rugby
Saturday, 07 December 2019 11:29

Ospreys' nightmare season plumbed new depths as they had a man sent off less than a minute into their latest loss, at home to Racing 92 in the Heineken Champions Cup.

Full-back Dan Evans saw red after just 37 seconds as his boot made contact with Teddy Thomas' face as he caught a high ball.

The hosts actually took the lead through Hanno Dirksen's try, but that was a false dawn as Racing scored four - including two for Thomas - to lead 28-7 at half-time.

That killed the game as a contest and, despite flickers of an Ospreys revival with tries for Ma'afu Fia and Aled Davies, Racing added two more of their own as they eased to a comfortable victory.

The unbeaten French side stay top of Pool Four, while a third defeat from three Champions Cup fixtures keeps the Ospreys rooted to the bottom of the group.

This defeat was the latest setback in a miserable season for the Welsh region, who have now lost nine out of their 10 competitive fixtures.

On the eve of last weekend's Pro14 defeat by Cheetahs, Ospreys bosses confirmed head coach Allen Clarke is no longer in charge of team affairs.

Assistants Matt Sherratt and Carl Hogg have since taken interim charge of the team, with former Wales boss Mike Ruddock helping on a short-term basis as a consultant.

Ruddock was watching from the stands at a sparsely-populated Liberty Stadium on this occasion and, while he will already have been aware of the Ospreys' plight, this was a sobering evening which laid bare the region's dismal state of affairs on and off the pitch.

Nightmare start for Ospreys

A match against Racing, the wealthy two-time Champions Cup runners-up from Paris, was always likely to prove difficult for the Ospreys, ravaged by injury and shorn of leading Wales internationals such as Alun Wyn Jones, Justin Tipuric and George North.

Their task was made infinitely more difficult after just 37 seconds when referee Frank Murphy consulted television match official Olly Hodges and sent off Evans after he had jumped to catch the ball and planted his foot into the face of France wing Thomas.

It seemed accidental on Evans' part, but that did not matter as Murphy dealt with the incident to the letter of the law and produced a red card.

Ospreys' initial response was impressive, sending Dirksen over in the corner for a converted try after Racing's Juan Imhoff was sin-binned for a deliberate knock-on.

But that numerical parity was short-lived as Ospreys centre Scott Williams was also yellow carded and, during his 10 minutes in the bin, Racing hooker Teddy Baubigny and wing Thomas crossed for converted tries.

Things got even worse for the hosts as they were temporarily reduced to 12 players when scrum-half Davies was sent to the sin-bin for a deliberate knock-on, compounded by the fact referee Murphy then awarded Racing a penalty try.

The away side were already coasting at this point and, when Thomas touched down for his second try and his team's bonus point-securing fourth, Racing had the air of a team gently going through the motions in a training session.

Trailing 28-7, the Ospreys feared a case of deja vu when, 18 seconds into the second half, Murphy turned to Hodges once again to consider potential foul play from Williams.

Ospreys respond

The Wales centre, yellow carded in the first half, looked like he might be in danger of getting a second - if not a straight red - after leading with his elbow as he braced himself for a tackle from Olivier Klemenczak.

Williams' elbow appeared to strike Klemenczak in the head, but Murphy reprieved the Ospreys player without showing him a card of any colour.

That let-off did not stop the procession from Racing, who extended their lead with a try for replacement Yoan Tanga-Mangene.

To their credit, the Ospreys did not simply unravel. They responded with tries for Ma'afu Fia and scrum-half Davies which reduced their deficit to 33-19.

But those scores never felt like harbingers of a genuine revival.

This game was already beyond them and a sixth try conceded, this time by Racing captain Henry Chavancy, was the final blow of yet another defeat for the Ospreys in a demoralising campaign.

Ospreys forwards coach Carl Hogg said: "It makes it very difficult when you lose a player in the first minute of the game and concede a couple of yellow cards… against one of the best sides in Europe.

"But credit to the players - in the second half they regrouped and showed a huge amount of character and spirit to battle back because it would've been very easy to fold.

"I think it [Dan Evans' red card] was unintentional, but nowadays any contact with the head and the player's going to be in trouble."

Tanner English Joins Riggs Motorsports

Published in Racing
Saturday, 07 December 2019 12:11

BENTON, Ky. – Dirt late model racer Tanner English has announced he will be joining Riggs Motorsports, effective Monday.

The second generation driver will immediately start prepping the Riggs Motorsports XR1 Rocket Chassis for the 44th annual Winternationals at East Bay Raceway Park in Gibsonton, Fla., from Feb. 3-8.

English will pilot the No. 81e machine for Riggs Motorsports, while Jason Riggs will be car No. 81 and his brother, Jack Riggs, will be No. 81j. In addition, Jake Little – who is the crew chief for Jason – will also jump behind the wheel for a select few appearances.

“I am excited to be partnering up with Scott and Jason Riggs with Riggs Motorsports,” English said in a press release on his website. “This will be a big change for me, as I will be able to work at the shop and race full time. It’s a brand new experience, as I usually have very minimal time after work to prepare for upcoming events.

“It will be great to have the opportunity to focus on racing and I think we will make a really good team,” English said. “I want to thank Scott and Jason for believing in me and giving me this opportunity to further my racing career. They are a great racing family with a very similar mindset to my own and I am looking forward to a successful 2020 season.”

Following East Bay’s annual Winternationals, the team will compete in a pick and choose type of schedule throughout the year – one that makes sense geographically and financially. The team plans toe enter most of the DIRTcar Summer Nationals events across the Midwest in June and July, meaning a run at the series title isn’t out of the question.

“Riggs Motorsports is very excited to add Tanner English to our team,” said team owner Scott Riggs, who has also fielded cars in the past for Brian Shirley, Scott James, Kevin Cole and others. “I have personally watched Tanner race since he was eleven years old. Tanner is a very talented racecar driver and will put in the work needed to be successful, but more important than racing – he is a good person and does things the right way. Riggs Motorsports has a big year planned starting at East Bay, as Tanner will drive alongside Jason Riggs and our newest racer – 17-year-old Jack Riggs.”

Stenson (66) claims Hero title for first win since 2017

Published in Golf
Saturday, 07 December 2019 06:29

It was a wild finish in the Bahamas, but in the end the trophy went to one of the few players who is not about to board a charter flight to Australia. Here's how things ended up at the Hero World Challenge, where Henrik Stenson held on for his first win in more than two years:

Leaderboard: Henrik Stenson (-18), Jon Rahm (-17), Patrick Reed (-16), Tiger Woods (-14), Justin Thomas (-13), Justin Rose (-13)

What it means: Stenson started the day one shot off the lead, but after Gary Woodland's early struggles he quickly moved to the top on a day when six players held at least a share of the lead, including the tournament host. The Swede made five birdies in his first 13 holes but was still trailing Rahm until hitting the shot of the tournament en route to an eagle on No. 15 that turned the event on its head. Stenson needed one of two special invites to land a spot in the field, but he's leaving the Bahamas with his first worldwide win since the 2017 Wyndham Championship.

Round of the day: Rahm made it clear he was not going to relinquish the trophy easily. The defending champ's bogey-free 66 was highlighted by a stretch from Nos. 14-16 where he made two birdies and an eagle to briefly take sole possession of the lead. Rahm was looking to win his third straight worldwide start, but instead he came up one short behind his former Ryder Cup teammate.

Round of the day: Stenson got off to a quick start with three birdies over his first eight holes, but his title chances were nearly derailed by par-5 struggles on Nos. 9 and 11. A lengthy par save on 11 kept him in it, and he holed a similar par putt on No. 14 as the noted ball-striker got hot late on the greens. It added up to a 6-under 66, matching the final-round effort of both Rahm and Patrick Reed, who would have been tied for the lead if not for a two-shot penalty he incurred Friday for moving sand with a practice swing.

Biggest disappointment: Woodland's chances for a title faded quickly as he played his first four holes in 4 over including a sloppy double bogey on the par-5 third hole. While he bounced back with five back-nine birdies to salvage a 1-over 73, the overnight leader faded to a T-7 finish and never really factored down the stretch.

Shot of the day: Moments after Rahm rolled in yet another lengthy putt one hole ahead of him, Stenson stepped up to a 259-yard 5-wood on No. 15 and flipped the script. His approach to the par-5 hit in front of the green and rolled up to inside of 6 inches, nearly going in for an albatross and setting up a tap-in eagle.

Quote of the day: "I guess I went one better." - Stenson, who was a runner-up at this event in both 2014 and 2016.

Gladbach stun Bayern with last-gasp penalty

Published in Soccer
Saturday, 07 December 2019 08:55

Borussia Monchengladbach stayed top of the Bundesliga on Saturday as Ramy Bensebaini scored twice, including a stoppage-time penalty, in a 2-1 comeback win over champions Bayern Munich, who dropped to sixth in the table.

Ivan Perisic gave the visitors the lead on 49 minutes, but saw his goal cancelled out on the hour mark by a Bensebaini header.

Algeria international Bensebaini later converted from the spot after Javi Martinez was sent off for bringing down Marcus Thuram in the box.

It was another wasteful performance from Bayern, who should have scored several goals through Thomas Muller and the league's top scorer Robert Lewandowski in a dominant first half.

Gladbach keeper Yann Sommer denied Bayern on a number of occasions, including by keeping the ball on the line with his fingertips at one point.

Bayern's Corentin Tolisso was taken off injured, and though his replacement Perisic delivered with his goal, that moment of quality from the Croatia international was not enough to secure a result.

The hosts sprung to life after Perisic's strike and took control of the game.

In an entertaining second half both teams looked for the winner, but it was Gladbach who got it in stoppage time to continue their spectacular title run.

Gladbach are on 31 points at the top of the league, while Bayern -- who suffered their second consecutive league loss -- dropped to sixth place on 24 points with the defeat.

Man City investigating apparent racial incident

Published in Soccer
Saturday, 07 December 2019 12:09

Manchester City said they were investigating a fan for alleged "racial gestures" made during Saturday's 2-1 derby defeat to Manchester United at the Etihad Stadium.

Television images circulating on social media showed a City fan making a gesture in front of United's Brazilian midfielder Fred during the Premier League game.

"Manchester City FC are aware of a video circulating on social media which appears to show a supporter making racial gestures during the second half of the match against Manchester United this evening," the club said.

"Officials from the club are working with Greater Manchester Police in order to help them identify any individuals concerned and assist with their enquiries."

The club said they were also working with police to identify fans who threw objects on to the field when Fred was taking a corner in front of them.

Fred appeared to have been struck by at least one object.

"The club operates a zero tolerance policy regarding discrimination of any kind, and anyone found guilty of racial abuse will be banned from the club for life," added the City statement.

United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said midfielder Jesse Lingard had also been targeted.

"I've seen it on the video, it was Jesse and Fred and the fella must be ashamed of himself. It's unacceptable and I hope he will not be watching any football anymore."

Anti-racist campaign group Kick it Out said on Twitter that they had received a high number of complaints about incidents at the game.

"We have been inundated with reports of alleged racist abuse from a number of individuals during this evening's Manchester Derby," said the group.

"We will be contacting both clubs to offer our support and hope swift action is taken to identify the offenders."

Rashford, McTominay 8/10 as Man United stun City

Published in Soccer
Saturday, 07 December 2019 12:06

MANCHESTER -- Manchester United recorded their second big win in the space of four days after beating Manchester City 2-1 at the Etihad Stadium.

After beating Tottenham by the same scoreline in midweek, a Marcus Rashford penalty -- awarded by VAR -- and a second from Anthony Martial put United 2-0 up inside half an hour against the reigning champions.

Nicolas Otamendi set up a nervous finish by halving the deficit five minutes from time, but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's team hung on to seal their first derby win since April 2018 and move to within five points of the top four.

Positives

Rashford is flying. He was in the middle of everything United did well in the first half as the visitors cut City to shreds and could have led by more than 2-0. Just like on Wednesday against Tottenham, he could have had a hat trick in the opening 30 minutes after converting his penalty, missing a decent chance and hitting the crossbar from distance. United look a different team with Rashford in this type of form.

Negatives

It will not feel important after a derby win at the Etihad Stadium, but United were close to their first clean sheet in a Premier League away game in 13 games and they could not quite hang on. Solskjaer will be disappointed that it was a set piece that let City back into it after his team defended so well for so long.

Manager rating (out of 10)

8 -- The United manager made two changes to the team that beat Tottenham, bringing in Luke Shaw and Martial for Ashley Young and Mason Greenwood. The plan was to concede possession and hit City on the break with the pace of Rashford, Martial, Jesse Lingard and Daniel James, and it worked. United were 2-0 up at half-time but it could have been four.

Player ratings (1-10; 10 = best, players introduced after 70 minutes get no rating)

GK David De Gea, 7 -- Didn't face a shot on target until 33 minutes had gone and United were already 2-0 up. Tipped a Rodri drive over the bar and made a good save from Riyad Mahrez.

DF Aaron Wan-Bissaka, 8 -- Made a good early block when Kevin De Bruyne had a sight of goal. Defended brilliantly and kept City's danger man, Raheem Sterling, very quiet.

DF Luke Shaw, 7 -- Thrown in for his first league start since August. Must have felt rusty but played well enough that Bernardo Silva was substituted in the second half.

DF Victor Lindelof, 7 -- Survived a penalty shout when Bernardo Silva's cross ricocheted off his arm and made a wonderful diving block when De Bruyne looked likely to score.

DF Harry Maguire, 8 -- Will be disappointed that Otamendi was allowed to head City back into it late in the second half but his positioning for most of the game was outstanding.

MF Scott McTominay, 8 -- Another big performance in another big game. The midfielder is quickly becoming undroppable and his bite in the centre of the pitch was vital here.

MF Fred, 7 -- Slick pass through a crowd to set up a chance for Dan James. Fortunate to avoid giving away a penalty on the stroke of half-time after handling Kyle Walker's cross as he slid to ground.

MF Jesse Lingard, 7 -- Had a shot saved by Ederson after being played in by Rashford. Hurried City's midfield with his energy in the hole behind Martial.

FW Daniel James, 7 -- Stung Ederson's palms with a shot inside two minutes and his pace was always a threat on the counter-attack.

FW Marcus Rashford, 8 -- Won the penalty with a driving run into the box and took the ball off Martial to score from the spot. Electric in the first half.

FW Anthony Martial, 8 -- Solskjaer said Martial wouldn't start but then he did. Forced Ederson into a good save at his near post before doubling United's lead inside half an hour with a well-placed low drive.

Substitutes

MF Andreas Pereira -- N/R

DF Ashley Young -- N/R

Baylor QB Brewer ruled out after helmet hits turf

Published in Breaking News
Saturday, 07 December 2019 11:48

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Baylor starting quarterback Charlie Brewer left the Big 12 championship game against the Oklahoma Sooners in the first half Saturday and will not return, coach Matt Rhule said.

Brewer's helmet hit the turf on a sack by Oklahoma's Kenneth Murray early in the second quarter, and he was slow to get up.

"He's out," Rhule told ESPN's Holly Rowe at halftime. "They're going to evaluate him and err on the side of caution, so he'll be out for the rest of the game."

After the play, Brewer was briefly evaluated by the Baylor training staff, but he returned for another offensive series. After that possession, head referee Mike Defee asked Rhule to have his training staff again examine Brewer, according to Rowe.

After the second sideline examination, Baylor sent Brewer to the locker room for further evaluation.

Redshirt freshman Gerry Bohanon entered the game in place of Brewer and led the Bears to their first touchdown drive of the day on a 33-yard pass to Tyquan Thornton.

Prior to Saturday, Bohanon, the No. 130 overall prospect in the 2018 ESPN 300, had made 10 career appearances, including eight this season, and had 257 career rushing yards and 131 passing yards. He relieved an injured Brewer and finished the Bears' win over Kansas State on Oct. 5, but he only attempted eight passes in the final eight regular-season games.

Brewer was 3-of-6 for 15 yards prior to leaving Saturday's game against the Sooners. He started every game for the No. 7 Bears this season, ranking second in the Big 12 in passing efficiency and fifth in touchdown passes (20) and passing yards per game (244.6).
