Richmond & Stallings Form R&S Race Cars

Published in Racing
Monday, 02 December 2019 17:15

CONCORD, N.C. – Veteran NASCAR crew chief Marcus Richmond has partnered with Steve Stallings to form R&S Race Cars.

The business, previously known as A&E Race Cars, will continue to build late model stock car chassis’ while also offering additional services including body hanging, building and selling parts and turn-key purchases.

R&S Race Cars will continue to be based in Cluster Springs, Va., with an additional location set to open in Concord, N.C.

“The late model stock car series is so competitive and there is so much talent at short tracks around the country, especially in the Southeast,” Richmond said in a press release published on Twitter Monday. “Steve (Stallings) had approached me about buying A&E together a few months ago and we decided the time is right to grow the business by continuing their tradition of building top-notch chassis, but also expanding our customer service to provide a turn-key experience for any level of racer.

“We want to serve our customers and give them a great product from new builds, to repairs and parts.”

Richmond is best known for his work in the NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series, where he has scored 10 victories as a crew chief for Kyle Busch Motorsports.

Stallings is a former competitor his owned his own business, Stallings Collision. His son, Blake Stallings, has also spent time behind the wheel of a late model stock car.

“I’ve worked in the body shop business most of my life and know what it takes to run a successful shop,” Stallings said. “We want to put a great product out that wins races, but also be a resource to help with set-up issues, body repair and parts. Marcus (Richmond) is really well known in the late model stock racing circles, so his expertise and knowledge will be invaluable.

“We’ve both been in this business for a long time, so it was a natural fit for us to team up and offer a full-service shop. We’re doing something we’ve always been involved in and that is our passion.”

Blackhawks investigating conduct of Crawford

Published in Hockey
Monday, 02 December 2019 17:35

Chicago Blackhawks assistant coach Marc Crawford will be away from the team as it conducts a "thorough review" of "recent allegations that have been made regarding his conduct with another organization," the team said Monday.

The decision comes two days after the New York Post published a story in which former NHL player Sean Avery alleged that Crawford kicked him during a game in the 2006-07 season, when Crawford was coaching the Kings and Avery was playing for them.

"He kicked me after a too many men on the ice call I took," Avery said. "He didn't have me serve it, we got scored on, and he let me have it. ... You know how I stand at the end of the bench? He came down and gave me a kick [in the behind] that left a mark."

Avery told the Post that he was on Crawford's bad side after an incident in practice a few days earlier.

"This was right after I [messed] up a drill and dumped the puck into the wrong corner, and it landed on Crow's head and cut him for six [stitches]," Avery said.

There has been increased scrutiny on the conduct of NHL coaches since allegations against Bill Peters came to light last week. Former player Akim Aliu alleged that Peters directed racial epithets toward him when they were in the minors 10 years ago. Peters admitted to the incident in a letter of apology to Flames GM Brad Treliving, saying the comments were made in a "moment of frustration." He resigned as head coach of the team on Friday.

As the Flames were investigating Peters, more allegations of misconduct surfaced. Former Hurricanes defenseman Michal Jordan said that when Peters coached there, he kicked him and punched an unnamed player in the head. Current Hurricanes coach Rod Brind'Amour -- then an assistant with the Flames -- told reporters that the incident "for sure happened."

Former NHL player Patrick O'Sullivan said on Twitter last week that he "went through awful things with my first NHL coach who knew my abuse background as a child." O'Sullivan debuted for Crawford's Kings in 2006-07.

Crawford, 58, is in his first season with the Blackhawks. He coached the Colorado Avalanche to the Stanley Cup in 1996 and coached with the Canucks, Kings, Stars and Senators.

Woods kicks off event with Hero Shot win in walk-off fashion

Tiger Woods is officially on a winning streak.

Woods kicked off his Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas by claiming the inaugural Hero Shot at Baha Mar, an event where he topped some marquee names hitting shots at a floating target from 130 yards away.

Woods, who took home his record-tying 82nd PGA Tour title the last time he teed it up at the Zozo Championship in October, outlasted Jordan Spieth, Bryson DeChambeau, Jon Rahm, Henrik Stenson and Gary Woodland in the exhibition, and he did it in typical Tiger fashion.

Going head to head with Spieth in the final round, the 15-time major champ ended the match with a walk-off bullseye on his final shot.

Woods shared his victory on social media afterward, jokingly asking if it counted as win No. 83.

Tiger Woods will be surrounded by Presidents Cup teammates at this week's Hero World Challenge, but it's Justin Thomas who will play alongside the playing captain during the first round at Albany.

Woods and Thomas are paired together for the opener in the Bahamas, which will begin Wednesday to facilitate travel to Australia for next week's team event. The 18-man field features 11 of the 12 U.S. representatives at Royal Melbourne, including Woods who won the Zozo Championship in October and Thomas who captured the CJ Cup the week prior.

Other notable pairings include defending champ Jon Rahm alongside Albany resident Justin Rose and former Open champs Jordan Spieth and Henrik Stenson together. The rest of the tee sheet includes nothing but red, white and blue - and potentially some pairing options for Woods next week in Australia.

Here's a look at the full opening-round tee times, with the field re-paired for each of the final three rounds based on score (all times ET):

10:40 a.m.: Jon Rahm, Justin Rose

10:51 a.m.: Kevin Kisner, Bubba Watson

11:02 a.m.: Xander Schauffele, Gary Woodland

11:13 a.m.: Bryson DeChambeau, Webb Simpson

11:24 a.m.: Patrick Reed, Patrick Cantlay

11:35 a.m.: Tiger Woods, Justin Thomas

11:46 a.m.: Rickie Fowler, Tony Finau

11:57 a.m.: Chez Reavie, Matt Kuchar

Sophie Devine named WBBL player of the tournament

Sophie Devine, the Adelaide Strikers and New Zealand allrounder, has been named player of the tournament for this season's WBBL after playing a starring role in the Strikers' progress to finals weekend.

Devine currently tops the run-scoring with 699 at 77.66 and a strike-rate of 130.16 including eight half-centuries. Her 28 sixes puts her well ahead of the next best of 19 from Lizelle Lee. She also claimed 16 wickets at 20.25 and an economy rate of 6.35

With potentially two matches to play should the Strikers reach the final on Sunday, Devine has a chance of eclipsing Ellyse Perry's record of 777 runs in last year's tournament. At one stage during the regular season she went 207 deliveries without being dismissed.

Devine earned votes in 12 of the 14 matches she played, finishing 13 clear of Brisbane Heat's Beth Mooney (35 votes) and Melbourne Renegade's Danni Wyatt (33).

Votes were awarded on a 3-2-1 basis by the standing umpires at the end of each match meaning a player can receive up to six votes per match.

Of the players to top the voting only Perry, whose campaign was ended early by a shoulder injury, will not be appearing at finals weekend in Brisbane.

Leading votes

1 Sophie Devine (Adelaide Strikers) - 48 votes
2 Beth Mooney (Brisbane Heat) - 35 votes
3 Danni Wyatt (Melbourne Renegades) - 33 votes
4 Jess Duffin (Melbourne Renegades) - 31 votes
= Meg Lanning (Perth Scorchers) - 31 votes
= Ellyse Perry (Sydney Sixers) - 31 votes
5 Jess Jonassen (Brisbane Heat) - 27 votes

A's non-tender reliever Treinen after down 2019

OAKLAND, Calif. -- The Oakland Athletics did not tender a contract to former closer Blake Treinen on Monday, letting the 2018 All-Star become a free agent.

The right-handed Treinen posted a 0.78 ERA in 2018, but that number ballooned to 4.91 in 2019. He was replaced by Liam Hendriks in the closer role as the low-budget A's earned the American League's top wild card.

Treinen was expected to command roughly $7.5 million in arbitration.

Left-hander Ryan Buchter and catcher Josh Phegley also didn't receive contracts. Lefty T.J. McFarland reached agreement on a one-year deal to avoid salary arbitration. He was claimed off waivers from the Diamondbacks on Nov. 4.

The A's announced the moves after completing a trade that sent switch-hitting second baseman Jurickson Profar to the San Diego Padres for catcher Austin Allen and a player to be named.

Treinen started the 2019 season as A's closer but wasn't nearly as consistent. He had a 6.14 ERA during a 19-game span from April 28 to June 20 before a strained pitching shoulder put him on the injured list. Once healthy and back July 3, Treinen didn't have a save over his next 27 appearances and posted a 6.17 ERA.

Oakland also said its other previously unsigned players were tendered contracts. That list includes the seven remaining arbitration eligible players: right-handers Chris Bassitt and Hendriks, outfielders Mark Canha, Robbie Grossman and Chad Pinder, lefty Sean Manaea and shortstop Marcus Semien.

Ronaldo skips Ballon d'Or to get Serie A award

Cristiano Ronaldo has won the Serie A player of the year award and was named in the Italian top flight's best XI.

Ronaldo was at the Gran Gala del Calcio in Milan on Monday to collect his prize, instead of attending the Ballon d'Or ceremony in Paris where he was third in the voting for best player in the world behind winner Lionel Messi and second-place Virgil van Dijk.

The Juventus forward turned up about an hour before the main award was announced, arriving more than two hours after the other guests.

For the first time at the Italian ceremony there were also awards for female players. Roma and Italy forward Manuela Giugliano won the top prize.

All the awards are voted for by a mix of footballers, coaches, referees and journalists.

Ronaldo signed for Juventus from Real Madrid in July 2018 and helped the Bianconeri to their eighth successive Serie A title in his first season at the Italian club.

The 34-year-old Ronaldo scored 28 goals in all competitions for Juventus, including 21 in the league.

Gian Piero Gasperini won the award for best coach after leading Atalanta to third place and a Champions League berth. Gasperini beat former Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri and Bologna's Sinisa Mihajlovic.

Information from the Associated Press was used in this story.

New Zealand 375 (Latham 105, Mitchell 73, Watling 55, Broad 4-73) and 211 for 2 (Williamson 96*, Taylor 84*) lead England 476 (Root 226, Burns 101, Pope 75, Wagner 5-124) by 110 runs

Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor capitalised on an end-of-term vibe on the final day at Hamilton, batting through the morning session - with the aid of some notable let-offs from England's fielders - to all but ensure that New Zealand will claim the spoils in this two-Test series, thanks to their innings victory at Mount Maunganui last week.

By lunch, Williamson was 96 and Taylor 84, having brought up his 7000th Test run, and his 1000th at Seddon Park. They had begun the day with their side in a small amount of strife, still trailing by five runs overnight and knowing that a flurry of early wickets could yet have given England a chance to put their foot in the door on the final day of the series.

That prospect never materialised, as the combination of a lifeless wicket and a tired England attack combined to give both men a chance to bed in from the outset. Apart from the chance to close out a notable series win, the partnership, 183 by the break, was a vital chance for New Zealand's two senior batsmen to get time in the middle before their next big encounter - the first Test against Australia in Perth that gets underway in just over a week's time.

England opened their day's work with Sam Curran and Ben Stokes in harness, the latter opting for a short-pitch assault from round the wicket to cramp both batsman for room. That tactic might have reaped an early reward in the fourth over of the day, when Williamson - on 39 - gloved a lifter down the leg side. Unfortunately, Ollie Pope behind the stumps was too flat-footed to take advantage, tumbling late to his left and shelling the opportunity.

If that was a bad miss, however, it was nothing compared to the incomparable low-light of the morning - a dropped catch so ghastly that it is sure to be replayed in Christmas compilations and Twitter memes for evermore.

The moment came in Jofra Archer's third over of the morning, with Williamson by now on 62 and eased sweetly through his gears. Archer, who has endured a tough campaign with just a solitary wicket in each of the two Tests, decided the time was ripe to roll out his variations, rather than beat a hole in the middle of an unresponsive wicket and attempt to challenge the speed gun.

So out came a superbly subtle knuckleball - Archer even changed his grip midway through his run-up, then dropped his front arm in his delivery stride to add a further layer of bafflement to what was about to come. Williamson responded with a startled prod to midwicket, raising his hand in apology to his team-mate as the bowler set off on a victory gallop, arms outstretched and smile as wide as it has been all match.

But moments later, he was obliged to look back in horror and disbelief, as Joe Denly made an unfathomable Horlicks of an chance that an under-eights fielder would have been embarrassed to let through his fingers. The ball had lobbed to him as if being returned from the slip cordon at the end of an over - and it slipped like a buttered crumpet clean through his grasp.

It was an iconically desperate moment - quite possibly the easiest chance dropped by an England fielder since Mike Gatting shelled Kiran More at Madras in 1992-93, a lob off the splice that he tried to blame on the sun in his eyes. And the reactions were priceless. Stuart Broad threw his hands to his mouth in horror, Ben Stokes at deep midwicket turned on his heel mid-celebration and averted his gaze. Williamson himself raised a quizzical eyebrow and allowed himself a wry grin.

And the effect of that let-off on what remained of England's competitive juices was like a drawing pin on an inflatable dinghy. Denly himself entered the attack soon afterwards for an apologetic (but actually quite serviceable) six-over spell of legspin, and Chris Woakes came and went in another economical but fruitless burst.

The only real jeopardy for either batsman concerned the encroaching bad weather, and their own quest for milestones. Williamson - who was belatedly startled by a Stokes bouncer and rattled on the helmet - suddenly upped the ante with lunch approaching, pulling a brace of boundaries through square leg to race to 96. He'll hope the rain stays away for a moment or two longer.

Cubs don't offer contract to infielder Russell

Published in Baseball
Monday, 02 December 2019 16:00

CHICAGO -- The Chicago Cubs tendered contracts for the 2020 season to six arbitration eligible players but non-tendered infielder Addison Russell. Russell, 25, becomes a free agent after five years with the team, his final two seasons marked by controversy.

The second baseman/shortstop was suspended for 40 games near the end of the 2018 season for violating the league's domestic abuse policies. Despite that suspension, the Cubs tendered him a contract for the 2019 season as he sat out the first 28 games of last season to complete his suspension. His on-the-field game suffered as he dealt with the consequences of his off-the-field actions.

He was demoted to the minors last summer not long after telling ESPN he needed to be "more familiar" with the signs. Russell's OPS dipped below .700 in 2018 and 2019 after several promising years to begin his career.

Cubs president Theo Epstein issued a statement regarding Russell.

"We decided to non-tender Addison Russell today simply because the role we expected him to play for the 2020 Cubs was inconsistent with how he would have been treated in the salary arbitration process," he said. "In the year since we decided to tender Addison a contract last November, he has lived up to his promise to put in the important self-improvement work necessary off the field and has shown growth, as a person, as a partner, as a parent and as a citizen. We hope and believe that Addison's work will continue, and we have offered our continued support of him and his family, including Melisa.

"In the last year, the organization has also put in the important work necessary to bolster our domestic violence prevention training for all employees, all major league players, all minor league players and all staff. We also offered healthy relationship workshops for the players' partners and provided intensive, expert domestic violence prevention training for player-facing staff. This heightened training and our increased community involvement on the urgent issue of domestic violence prevention will continue indefinitely. We wish Addison and his family well."

Russell was the NL All-Star Game starter at shortstop in 2016, the same year he helped the Cubs to a World Series title for the first time in 108 years. He hit a Game 6 grand slam, which essentially won the contest for the Cubs, who trailed 3-2 in the series at the time.

The next season, Russell compiled a .722 OPS while playing solid defense, though issues in his former marriage began to surface. The league's investigation concluded late in 2018 when he was suspended in September, but not for any one incident.

Russell was acquired from Oakland for Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel on July 4, 2014 in a trade widely praised for Chicago.

Cubs who were tendered contracts for 2020 include Javy Baez, Kris Bryant, Kyle Schwarber, Albert Almora Jr, Willson Contreras and pitcher Kyle Ryan. The Cubs also came to terms with righty Jharel Cotton, who they acquired from Oakland last week, for $640,000. The team also tendered contracts to 19 other players not yet arbitration eligible players.
