New Body Options For Granite State Pro Stocks

Published in Racing
Tuesday, 26 November 2019 15:00

CHARLESTOWN, N.H. – The Granite State Pro Stock Series will allow its competitors to use two new body options next season.

The new AR Revolution reskin kit, to be released at PRI 2019, will be legal for 2020 along with 5 Star’s Gen 6 body that was released one year ago. Both of these new body options will carry a 20 pound weight penalty for the 2020 racing season.

The Approved Body Configuration (ABC) bodies have been the same since 2002 when the ABC committee adopted the current set of rules. In 2019 5 Star released their Gen 6 body and the Granite State Pro Stock Series chose to remain with the ABC program. Now, with AR releasing their version, the series has made the decision to approve the new package.

“While we believe strongly in the ABC body program, we feel that the time is right to allow these two new options for our competitors,” said series president Mike Parks. “As things play out over the next year, we will continue to evaluate where we go in the future. ABC has plans for change in the next year or so and we will be watching that closely.”

As for the weight penalty, the series wanted to make sure that teams didn’t feel like they had to have the new body.

“The ABC program has worked very well for our series,” said Parks. “Both Nathan Kelly (head technical inspector) and I felt it was important that a team that didn’t need a new body, didn’t feel like they had to have one. Despite the fact that we are racing Pro Stocks we are still trying to keep the cost of racing in check.”

Fans of the series will get to see the new bodies for the first time at Claremont Motorsports Park at the end of April.

LPGA-LET announce '50-50 joint venture' going forward

Published in Golf
Tuesday, 26 November 2019 08:52

Ladies European Tour players voted Tuesday to run its tour as a 50-50 joint business venture with the LPGA.

The tours will combine to manage operations.

“Two teams, joining for one common purpose, will create opportunities we simply could not have pursued on our own,” said LET Board Chair Marta Figueras-Dotti. “At its foundation, this joint venture is about creating opportunities for our members to pursue their passion, and their careers as professional athletes. In just the 60 days since we began working on this joint venture, we have already seen a dramatic impact on our LET Tour schedule – an impact that will be a positive result for virtually all of our LET Members.”

The new partnership was formalized during the LET annual players meeting in Spain. LPGA commissioner Mike Whan was there to present the LPGA’s side of the partnership proposal to players. The LET and LPGA boards had already approved the venture, but LET players had final authority to make the deal.

“This is an exciting next step for the LPGA's mission to provide more opportunities for women in this game,” Whan said. “Over the past 10 years, the LPGA has had tremendous success partnering with other golf stakeholders, including the USGA, PGA Tour, European Tour, R&A and PGA of America, to enhance opportunities for women worldwide. We are thrilled to deepen our relationship with the Ladies European Tour in an effort to create the strongest possible women’s tour in Europe.”

Though it’s a “50-50 joint venture,” Whan said before leaving for Spain that the LPGA’s stake in the business would have limits..

“All proceeds stay in Europe, can't take any dollars out,” Whan said. “We can put money into the LET, but we can't take money back out, which I asked my board to support. I want to make sure the European Tour players know that this is not some American growth strategy.”

The LET has been struggling for the last four years, with tournaments and sponsorships falling away. Two years ago, the LET ended the four-year reign of its embattled CEO, Ivan Khodabakhsh, a former World Boxing Series CEO who saw seven tournaments fold up in 2017.

The LET featured just 15 tournaments last year, for roughly $14 million in total purses. That’s up to 20 tournaments this year, with the tour just announcing Costa del Sol as sponsor of its Order of Merit competition, with new bonus pool money part of the new “Race to the Costa del Sol,” the year’s final event.

Whan helped the LPGA emerge from its own financial struggles a decade ago.

“We have experienced incredible growth in women's golf in the U.S., and this is an extraordinary opportunity to accelerate and expand the game in Europe as well,” Whan said. “I'm excited that this is something we will build together, with the LET."

Tour officials said there’s a focus on seeking to “fast track” expansion of the LPGA schedule.

Dybala's end-line strike lifts Juve over Atletico

Published in Soccer
Tuesday, 26 November 2019 14:00

Paulo Dybala curled in a free kick from the unlikeliest of angles to give Juventus a 1-0 Champions League win over Atletico Madrid on Tuesday, which left the Spaniards with a battle to secure a round-of-16 place.

Juventus, already qualified, won the free kick just outside the penalty area and near the goal-line but the narrow angle did not deter Argentine Dybala who fired his shot over the wall and in off the crossbar in the 45th minute.

The Turin side, with 13 points from five games, made sure of winning Group D with one match to spare.

Atletico Madrid, beaten 3-0 on the same ground last season when they were on the wrong end of a Cristiano Ronaldo hat trick, were left on seven points after their second successive defeat in the group, one ahead of Bayer Leverkusen.

"We are often criticised for playing badly and winning but this time we played well and didn't win," said Atletico midfielder Koke.

"It's infuriating, we created chances and gave everything but could not win. We just need to put the ball in the net."

Ronaldo, troubled recently by a knee problem, had a quiet game, avoided taking any free kicks and hurt himself when he kicked the corner flag trying to keep the ball in play, but did not appear to suffer an injury.

Atletico created the better chances despite having less possession.

Thomas Partey volleyed wide from outside the area and Saul Niguez headed over from close range when he should have done better, then forced Wojciech Szczesny to make a difficult save with a shot which went through a crowd of players.

Dybala, however, was a constant threat to Atletico and capped his display with a memorable goal just on the stroke of halftime.

Atletico continued to carve out chances after halftime but Matthijs de Ligt held the Juventus defence together and the Dutchman made a superb last-ditch tackle to deny Angel Correa a clear shot on goal.

The Mattress Makers squandered their best chance in stoppage time when Correa sent the ball across the face of goal, but Alvaro Morata, with an open goal gaping in front of him, failed to make contact.

"We played really well in the first half but we gave away too many balls playing our way out of defence," said Juventus coach Maurizio Sarri.

PSG come from 2-0 down to draw at Madrid

Published in Soccer

Paris Saint-Germain stormed from two goals down with 10 minutes remaining to earn a 2-2 draw away to Real Madrid in their heavyweight Champions League group tussle on Tuesday.

The visitors knew that anything but defeat at the Bernabeu would confirm them as group winners, with both sides having been guaranteed qualification following Club Brugge's draw at Galatasaray.

However, PSG were second best for much of the match. Karim Benzema kept his cool to give the hosts the lead on 17 minutes as he finished off when presented with the ball inside the six-yard box after Federico Valverde had hit the post.

There was a huge talking point two minutes before half-time when Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois was initially shown a red card for a foul on Mauro Icardi.

However, following a consultation with the VAR, Portuguese referee Artur Dias overturned his decision and awarded the hosts a free-kick following a coming together between PSG's Idrissa Gueye and Marcelo earlier in the move.

Despite losing the reverse fixture 3-0, Madrid appeared in complete control at the Bernabeu when Benzema headed in a second on 79 minutes. But Kylian Mbappe pounced on a defensive error to pull a goal back just two minutes later.

And PSG were level on 83 minutes through a superb Pablo Sarabia strike. Gareth Bale had the chance to make himself a hero with the Madrid fans but hit the post with a free-kick in the fourth minute of stoppage time.

"We played a great match,'' Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane said. "We are not happy with the final result, but we are happy with how we played. We are happy with what we did for the first 80 minutes. If we can keep playing like this, I'll be satisfied.''

Former Madrid goalkeeper Keylor Navas making a few good saves to keep the hosts from adding to their lead.

"Real Madrid was the better team for many minutes tonight,'' PSG coach Thomas Tuchel said. "Real Madrid played quite well, with a lot of confidence.''

There was another worrying moment when Eden Hazard was replaced by Gareth Bale on 69 minutes after suffering what looked like a serious ankle injury.

"Hazard's game was spectacular. He got a knock. He twisted his ankle. I hope it's not much. We'll see tomorrow... he's gone to do the tests now and we'll see," Zidane said.

"We feel good about the performance but not the result because we still wanted to win, but I think we gave everything on the pitch as Real Madrid always do," Benzema told reporters.

"Little by little, we are starting to play together as a team."

PSG midfielder Marco Veratti said his side had been outplayed for sections of the game but praised them for their reaction.

"In the first half, we didn't play our game and suffered too much but it's hard to avoid suffering away to Madrid," he said. "Few teams win here.

"We were a little more courageous in the second half. Even though we gave away a lot of chances, we played like we know how."

PSG dropped points for the first time in this European campaign, with 13 points ahead of their final match of the group stage at home to Galatasaray. Madrid travel to Brugge on matchday six.

Mourinho's Spurs rally to book UCL last-16 spot

Published in Soccer
Tuesday, 26 November 2019 14:00

Tottenham rallied from two goals down to beat Olympiakos 4-2 in Jose Mourinho's first home match to book passage to the Champions League last 16 on Tuesday night.

Mourinho, who was hired to replace the sacked Mauricio Pochettino on Nov. 19, was overseeing his first Champions League match in charge of Spurs and found his team quickly down two goals inside of 20 minutes after Youssef El Arabi and Ruben Semedo scored for the visitors.

Mourinho's first decisive act, sending on playmaker Christian Eriksen for defensive midfielder Eric Dier after 29 minutes, changed the flow and Dele Alli's tap-in on the stroke of half-time proved crucial.

Tottenham, who beat West Ham 3-2 in Mourinho's first match in charge, then got back on level terms to start the second half when Harry Kane struck on 50 minutes after being set up by Lucas Moura.

"It was a disappointing start, we know we didn't come out with any energy. They got the early goal and then got the second and it was uphill from there," Kane said.

"The goal just before half-time changed the momentum. We knew we couldn't play any worse than we did in the first half."

Serge Aurier fired Spurs in front in the 73rd minute before Kane added his second to make it 4-2 in favour of the hosts to secure the impressive comeback win and all three points.

The brace makes Kane the fastest player to ever reach 20 goals in Champions League history, reaching the mark in 24 games, two faster than Alessandro Del Piero.

Mourinho, who won the competition with Porto and Inter Milan, shook hands with each of his players and applauded the fans who applauded back, if not singing his name.

The result puts Tottenham on 10 points, securing second place in their group behind leaders Bayern Munich and ensuring passage to the round of 16.

8/10 Kane, Mourinho moves spark Spurs comeback

Tottenham Hotspur turned a first-half two-goal deficit into a full-time 4-2 win against Olympiakos in Group B of the Champions League on Tuesday to book their place in the round of 16. In what was Jose Mourinho's first game in charge at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, fans' initial groans and grumbles turned to cheers and elation after Deli Alli's fortuitous first-half tap-in was complemented by Harry Kane's brace and Serge Aurier's late strike.

Positives

The hosts' ability to listen to what was evidently a strong half-time message from Mourinho must encourage supporters ahead of intriguing fixtures against Manchester United, Bayern Munich and Chelsea. They took advantage of Olympiakos' errors and proved clinical in front of goal during the second half.

Negatives

Defensively, Tottenham remain vulnerable, and they certainly cannot continue to rely on Kane scoring in every game to mask sub-standard performances from the back four. Danny Rose and Toby Alderweireld must be more aware to opposition threats; taking a moment to relax may not be the worst idea either.

Manager rating out of 10

9 -- Mourinho was forced into making several key decisions throughout the game that turned the result on its head. Made the brave move of taking off Eric Dier with only a half-hour played -- a move that proved clinical.

Player ratings (1-10; 10 = best, players introduced after 70 minutes get no rating)

GK Paulo Gazzaniga, 6 -- Found himself positioned too close to his goal line for Olympiakos' preventable first goal. No question he could've tipped the ball wide had he been placed a little higher. No criticism for the second goal, though.

DF Danny Rose, 5 -- Woeful front-post defending from corners in the first half contributed to Spurs' early downfall. Failed to mark the visitors' attacking players appropriately and poor touches led to additional chances. Improved in the second half.

DF Davinson Sanchez, 6 -- Like Alderweireld, showed no great urgency to close down Youssef El-Arabi prior to Olympiakos' opener. Recovered well to prevent what could've been a quick and embarrassing second, but squandered a second-half header that deflected off his shoulder when it should've been buried in the net.

DF Toby Alderweireld, 5 -- One of several players who can be blamed for Olympiakos' opening goal, but Alderweireld ultimately should've been the man to close down El-Arabi with greater authority. Lost Ruben Semedo, too, shortly before the visitors' second goal, which came from a set piece.

DF Serge Aurier, 7 -- Played similar to his defensive teammates in the sense that urgency was lacking -- he looked disjointed and unsettled. A different player in the second half, though, and deservedly struck a goal in clinical style.

MF Eric Dier, 4 -- Understandable why he was taken off by Mourinho after only a half-hour gone. Looked disjointed in midfield, but certainly wouldn't have been the only Spurs man that home supporters wanted off.

MF Lucas Moura, 8 -- Quiet first half, however showed a tremendous turn of foot to not only win a throw-in but proceed to advance to the right byline before delivering a well-placed cross to Kane for Spurs' equaliser. Understandably frustrated to be taken off when he appeared to be finding his feet.

MF Harry Winks, 6 -- Must improve on his attempt to win possession prior to the visitors' first goal, though admittedly wasn't the only home player at fault. Could be argued that he found himself outplayed in midfield; likely he will need to improve to win over Mourinho.

MF Dele Alli, 7 -- Grabbed a goal, but can take no credit for it -- a simple tap-in from two yards out following a defensive blunder eased the hosts' pressure. Excellent build-up play, however, prior to Spurs' match-winning goal -- brilliant creativity and vision.

FW Son Heung-Min, 7 -- Denied an equalising goal by an excellent save following a flicked-on header. Some great bursting runs through midfield, but generally lacked an end product. Worked hard and proved a nuisance to Olympiakos' defence.

FW Harry Kane, 8 -- A lifeless first half where time on the ball was at a premium, and Spurs' attacking threat suffered as a consequence. Improved for the second half, though, by linking up well with Alli and was rewarded with a typical poacher's goal in addition to a clinical second.

Substitutes

MF Christian Eriksen, 8 -- Stepped up to the task by getting on the ball when possible and creating chances for Tottenham while they found themselves in a serious lull.

MF Moussa Sissoko, 7 -- Came on when Spurs needed an injection of energy in midfield and delivered well. Strong performance that can be built on.

MF Tanguy Ndombele, N/R -- A calming figure in midfield to take the sting out of the game while Spurs held a comfortable two-goal lead.

Chris Silverwood to fly home early after family bereavement

Published in Cricket
Tuesday, 26 November 2019 15:20

England's head coach, Chris Silverwood, will fly home early from the Test tour of New Zealand after the sudden death of his father-in-law.

Silverwood is set to return to England on November 30, after the close of the second day's play of the second Test in Hamilton.

The team's assistant coaches, Graham Thorpe and Paul Collingwood, will assume responsibility of team affairs alongside Joe Root, the Test captain, for the remainder of the match, ahead of the team's flight home on December 4.

The news is a further blow to the morale of an England squad that suffered an emphatic innings-and-65-run defeat in last week's first Test at Mount Maunganui.

That Test was Silverwood's first as England head coach, and proved to be an uncomfortable introduction to the realities of his new role, as the team's batting frailties were exposed in both innings, and their lack of penetration with the Kookaburra ball was exploited in New Zealand's record-breaking innings of 615 for 9 dec.

Even before this latest news, it had been a difficult few days for the new coach, with the squad also dealing with the aftermath of a racial slur directed at Jofra Archer towards the end of the first Test.

There have also been renewed questions about Silverwood's partnership with his captain, Joe Root, following scores of 2 and 11 and another uninspired display in the field. His sad early departure means he will have little chance to address the issue prior to the tour of South Africa next month.

The Celtics say All-Star point guard Kemba Walker is probable to face the Brooklyn Nets on Wednesday (7 p.m. ET, ESPN) in Boston.

Walker was hospitalized after suffering a neck sprain Friday when he collided with teammate Semi Ojeleye during a game against the Nuggets in Denver.

He did not play in Monday's win over the Sacramento Kings.

Daniel Theis (ill) remains questionable to face the Nets, who won't have Kyrie Irving and are listing DeAndre Jordan (sore ankle) as questionable.

Bucks' Middleton to return Wednesday vs. Hawks

Tuesday, 26 November 2019 15:23

Milwaukee Bucks All-Star swingman Khris Middleton will return to the court Wednesday against the Atlanta Hawks in Milwaukee.

Middleton has been out since Nov. 10 because of a left thigh contusion. At the time of the injury, the team said he would miss three to four weeks.

"I've been feeling great this last week or two," Middleton told reporters Tuesday.

Coach Mike Budenholzer said Middleton will play limited minutes upon his return.

"Lot of credit to Khris," Budenholzer told reporters. "Our medical group does an amazing job. Just very happy, excited to have him. He's obviously a huge part of what we do."

Middleton, 28, is averaging 18.5 points, 5.7 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game for the East-leading Bucks (14-3).
