KL Rahul's blazing half-century against Punjab gave Karnataka their third win in as many matches in the Super League of Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2019-20. Prithvi Shaw played a similar knock for Mumbai as they defeated Jharkhand in the other Group B game.

Meanwhile, in Group A, Haryana beat Delhi with the help of Yuzvendra Chahal's three-for and replaced Baroda at the top of the table. Baroda lost to Maharashtra earlier in the day.

Karnataka v Punjab

Rahul's unbeaten 48-ball 84 trumped Mandeep Singh's 76 off 50 balls as Karnataka beat Punjab by seven wickets.

In response to Punjab's 163 for 6, Rahul got Karnataka off to a flyer and despite Devdutt Padikkal scoring 2 off three balls, the duo added 33 in just 2.1 overs for the first wicket. Rahul kept going for his shots and brought up his fifty off 22 balls.

Along with Manish Pandey, Rahul took the side past 100 with a 60-run stand for the third wicket. Pandey fell for a 29-ball 33 but by then his side required just 25 from 29 balls, which they knocked off with 12 balls to spare.

Shubman Gill, who was released from the Test side along with Rishabh Pant on Friday, managed only 11 off nine balls, as Ronit More took 4 for 27, his best T20 figures.

Mumbai v Jharkhand

Smarting from their defeat against Tamil Nadu, Mumbai rode on Shaw's 39-ball 64 to take down Jharkhand by five wickets.

Chasing 171, Shaw targeted the arc between long-on and deep midwicket and took Mumbai to 50 in 5.2 overs. He got to his fifty off 28 balls with a straight six off left-arm spinner Sonu Singh before dragging a sweep on to his stumps.

Despite Shaw's innings, Mumbai still needed 64 from 36 balls. However, a 26-run 16th over took the game away from Jharkhand. It started with Shivam Dube hitting offspinner Utkarsh Singh for three successive sixes, and while Dube perished attempting the fourth, Siddhesh Lad smashed the fifth ball for four before collecting two off the sixth.

Earlier, Kumar Deobrat struck 58 off just 30 balls with the help of eight fours and two sixes, but once he was dismissed, Mumbai didn't let the other batsmen score freely. Jharkhand's eventual 170 for 5 didn't prove enough.

Maharashtra v Baroda

Ruturaj Gaikwad, Kedar Jadhav and Azim Kazi all scored in 40s before their bowlers skittled Baroda for 98 to give Maharashtra a 67-run win.

Continuing his good form, Gaikwad smashed seven fours and a six in his 27-ball 47 before he was trapped lbw by Swapnil Singh. Jadhav (47* off 42) and Azim (48* off 33) then added 87 in 61 balls in an unbroken third-wicket stand to take them to a competitive 165 for 2.

Baroda's chase never really took off. Samad Fallah dismissed Aditya Waghmode for a first-ball duck in the opening over. And when Deepak Hooda and Krunal Pandya too fell cheaply, Baroda were struggling at 37 for 3 in the seventh over.

Kedar Devdhar (27 off 20) was the only one to offer some resistance but once he was run out, the rest of the batting just collapsed.

Haryana v Delhi

Himanshu Rana starred with 59 off 40 balls as Haryana beat Delhi by 30 runs in the north India derby.

Batting first, Haryana lost their openers in the first two overs but Rana and Shivam Chauhan (47 off 31) added 105 in 66 balls for the third wicket. While they got out in back-to-back overs, the incoming batsmen kept finding the boundaries and powered the side to 181 for 6.

Navdeep Saini had an uneventful return from the groin injury, conceding 21 from three overs without picking up any wicket.

Bolstered by Pant's addition, Delhi would have backed themselves to chase the target down but the wicketkeeper-batsman ended up consuming 32 balls for his 28. By the time he got out, the asking rate had gone past 13. Nitish Rana showed some fight with a 25-ball 37 but it came a too little too late. For Haryana, Chahal was the most successful bowler, registering 3 for 27, his best figures in the seven matches he has played this tournament.

Ohio State gains on LSU; Oregon falls to No. 14

Published in Breaking News
Sunday, 24 November 2019 11:16

No. 2 Ohio State gained some ground on No. 1 LSU in The Associated Press college football poll and Oregon dropped out of the top 10 after being upset by Arizona State.

The Tigers remained No. 1 for the fifth straight week in the AP Top 25 presented by Regions Bank, receiving 50 first-places votes. The Buckeyes got nine first-place votes, up from five last week. No. 3 Clemson received three first-place votes. No. 4 Georgia and No. 5 Alabama also held their spots.

Ohio State is coming off a 28-17 victory over Penn State that dropped the Nittany Lions two spots to No. 11.

Oregon dropped eight spots to No. 14 after losing 31-28 at Arizona State. That allowed Utah to move up a spot to No. 6 and Oklahoma to No. 7. Florida, Minnesota and Michigan round out the top 10.

POLL POINTS

Alabama has now been ranked for 209 consecutive weeks, starting with the 2008 preseason poll, tying Florida (Sept. 9, 1990-Oct. 5, 2002) for the third-longest streak in poll history. Nebraska has the longest streak at 348 weeks (21 years, Oct. 12, 1981-Sept. 22, 2002) and Florida State is second with 211 weeks (12 years, Sept. 24, 1989-Nov. 11, 2001).

The Tide should tie Bobby Bowden's Seminoles this season and surpass them in next year's preseason poll. There are typically 16 polls in a season, counting preseason and final. At that rate, Alabama would pass the record Nebraska set under coach Tom Osborne in Week 5 of the 2029 season.

FYI, Nick Saban would be about a month shy of his 78th birthday.

IN

• No. 24 Navy jumped into the rankings, knocking out American Athletic Conference rival SMU.

• No. 25 Southern California finished its regular season by beating rival UCLA and jumping back into the rankings. The Trojans have had two previous one-week stays in the poll this season.

OUT

• Texas A&M fell out after a brief return to the AP Top 25. The Aggies lost for the fourth time, this time to Georgia. All of A&M's losses have come against teams ranked in the current top 16. It gets no easier for the Aggies next week. They will face No. 1 LSU and become the first team in the history of the AP poll, which dates to 1936, to face a No. 1 three times in one season. Playing the No. 1 team twice in one season has happened 30 times previously, and that's including seven teams that played one of those games in the postseason.

Texas A&M lost to No. 1 Clemson 24-10 in September and to No. 1 Alabama 47-28 in October.

CONFERENCE CALL

Big Ten -- 6 (Nos. 2, 9, 10, 12, 13, 19).

SEC -- 5 (Nos. 1, 4, 5, 8, 16).

American -- 3 (Nos. 17, 18, 24).

Big 12 -- 3 (Nos. 7, 11, 21).

Pac 12 -- 3 (Nos. 6, 14, 25).

ACC -- 2 (Nos. 3, 23).

Mountain West -- 1 (No. 20).

Sun Belt -- 1 (No. 22).

Independent -- 1 (No. 15).

RANKED vs. RANKED

No. 2 Ohio State at No. 10 Michigan. Is THIS the year Jim Harbaugh finally breaks through against the Buckeyes?

No. 5 Alabama at No. 16 Auburn. All eyes on Alabama backup quarterback Mac Jones in the Iron Bowl.

No. 7 Oklahoma at No. 21 Oklahoma State. Bedlam is for bragging rights and the Sooners' playoff hopes.

No. 13 Wisconsin at No. 9 Minnesota. The winner goes to the Big Ten championship game as West Division champion.

No. 18 Cincinnati at No. 17 Memphis. The Tigers need a victory to clinch the AAC West -- and a rematch at home with the Bearcats the next week.

Browns fans swing a helmet at Rudolph pinata

Published in Breaking News
Sunday, 24 November 2019 09:51

CLEVELAND -- Though Cleveland was set to play the Miami Dolphins on Sunday, Browns fans still had the Pittsburgh Steelers -- and last week's melee -- on the mind.

Cleveland tailgaters even had a Mason Rudolph piñata, and blindfolded fans tried to hit the Steelers quarterback dummy with a Pittsburgh helmet, according to video from Cleveland.com.

Browns defensive end Myles Garrett was suspended for the season for ripping off and swinging Rudolph's helmet into his head in the closing seconds of Cleveland's 21-7 victory Nov. 14. During his appeal with the NFL, Garrett accused Rudolph of inciting him with a racial slur, which Rudolph has denied through his agent.

Thursday night, Garrett stood by his claim in a tweet, which was followed by a statement from general manager John Dorsey, noting Garrett's "unquestionable integrity."

Before Sunday's game with the Dolphins, Browns owner Dee Haslam was photographed with Garrett's No. 95 on her cap in a show of support.

Cleveland travels to Pittsburgh next weekend.

PHILADELPHIA -- Offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer went to the trick-play section of his play sheet to give the Seattle Seahawks an early lead over the Philadelphia Eagles.

The play had Chris Carson taking a pitch to the right and throwing back to Russell Wilson, who found Malik Turner in between two defenders for a 33-yard touchdown. It was the first career score for Turner, who was undrafted out of Illinois in 2018.

Wilson now has 24 touchdowns to only two interceptions this season.

About a decade ago, I bumped into a newly professional player and asked about his first experiences in the minor leagues. "I've got to be honest with you -- I hate it," he said, before explaining how loose the oversight and preparation felt. After playing in a well-structured college program, he was shocked.

"It's like they throw you into the deep end of the pool and expect you to figure everything out," he said, before listing the many challenges that minor leaguers encountered. Finding food on salaries effectively below minimum wage. Getting enough rest through the long days of bus travel. Maintaining a weight-training program when some facilities had almost no equipment. Through all of that, trying to learn more about your chosen craft while playing on fields of varying quality.

Since that conversation, baseball front offices have changed dramatically, with a generation of staffers focused like border collies on efficiency -- pitch efficiency, swing efficiency, roster efficiency, per-dollar efficiency. And teams have recognized all the same things that the player outlined back then, creating the momentum for change which has led to Major League Baseball's recently revealed plan to significantly reduce the number of minor league teams, by 42.

Travis Stemler Lands New Dirt Late Model Ride

Sunday, 24 November 2019 08:00

LAKE ODESSA, Mich. – Travis Stemler has announced plans to partner with dirt late model car owners Chad and Kayla Anklam next season.

Stemler, the runner-up in the American Ethanol Late Model Tour standings this year, spent the last three seasons racing for Michigan-based Scott and Pam Phillips Motorsports.

In that time, Stemler drove to one American Ethanol Late Model Tour victory and one non-points feature win, along with two runner-up finishes in the standings the last two seasons. The team also enjoyed many top-five and top-10 performances during Stemler’s tenure.

“We had a great run, we had a good three years. We just, kinda, at the end of the year, just decided that it was time to go kinda separate directions in each other’s programs,” Stemler said.

Stemler went on to explain that one of the biggest contributing factors to the split was the travel time and distance between he and Scott and Pam Motorsports’ race shop.  He explained that it was nearly two and a half hours one way for him to work on the car and help get it prepared for the upcoming races.

His new ride with Chad and Kayla Anklam will be in the McCallister Cat Rentals XR1 Rocket. Stemler also says that he has already begun the process of preparing the car for the season ahead. The team has also purchased a new truck and trailer for travel.

Track owner Landon Stallard plans to pay a $40,000 points fund for the weekly divisions competing throughout the Championship Points Racing season.

I sure hope the racers are excited about the prospect of competing for a points fund that will pay that amount.

Smalling scores one, assists two in Roma win

Published in Soccer

On loan Manchester United defender Chris Smalling scored one and provided two assists in Roma's 3-0 win over Brescia on Sunday.

The Englishman, who joined Roma on a season-long in the summer, opened the scoring with a header from a Lorenzo Pellegrini corner, which found its way into the back of the net via a deflection from Brescia defender Andrea Cistana on 49 minutes.

On 57 minutes he turned provider as his powerful header back into the box from Justin Kluivert's cross was turned in by defensive partner Gianluca Mancini, who finished with a superb acrobatic effort over Brescia goalkeeper Jesse Joronen.

Nicolo Zaniolo thought he had added a third on 63 minutes but saw his goal ruled out as the video assistant referee (VAR) had adjudged the ball had gone out of play in the build-up.

But Roma did make it 3-0 on 66 minutes as another header from Smalling allowed Edin Dzeko to tap home a third from close range. The Bosnia international's goal was looked at by VAR for a potential offside, but it was ruled he was just on.

Brescia -- who were without star forward Mario Balotelli, who had been dropped following a training ground incident -- thought they had reduced the deficit on 86 minutes when Florian Aye had bundled home.

However, VAR intervened again due to a handball from Brescia forward Alfredo Donnarumma.

"It was the perfect start after the international break," Smalling said after the match. "We are coming into some big games now and go into Thursday [Europa League clash with Istanbul Basaksehir] now with a lot of confidence."

The victory saw Roma move back into the Champions League places ahead of Cagliari's clash with Lecce, while Brescia remain bottom.

De Boer on Copa hero: We called him Gabi-no-gol

Published in Soccer
Sunday, 24 November 2019 08:03

Frank de Boer has said Gabigol, Flamengo's Copa Libertadores hero, was known as "Gabi-no-gol" while the two were together at Inter Milan during the 2016-17 season.

Gabigol, who is on loan from Inter, scored twice in the 89th and 92nd minute as Flamengo came from a goal down to beat River Plate 2-1 in the Copa Libertadores final on Saturday.

- When are Liverpool in the FIFA Club World Cup?

Both he and De Boer joined Inter in the summer of 2016 with the Dutchman sacked after just 85 days in charge, while Gabigol -- real name Gabriel Barbosa -- made just nine appearances before being loaned out to Benfica.

"They [Internazionale] bought him for €35 million. I didn't know much about him, but they told me he was a fantastic player," De Boer told Fox Sport NL. "He thought he could do everything while standing still, playing indoor football.

"They called him Gabigol, but we called him 'Gabi-no-gol.' He joined us with two personal social media editors and a bodyguard but didn't do anything. The manager who came after me -- I left quite fast of course -- also didn't get him to play. And then he went back to Brasil."

Gabigol shot to prominence at Santos and was part of the Brazil team which won the gold medal for men's football at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro and moved to Inter that summer.

However, he scored just once and joined Benfica on loan at the end of the season, where he made just one appearance. Six months later, he returned to Santos, where he spent the next 12 months and slowly began to rebuild his career with 18 goals in 35 appearances.

But in 2019, he moved to Flamengo on loan and is on course to finish the season as the country's top goal scorer, as well as finishing the Copa Libertadores campaign as leading marksman.

De Boer spent just 11 Serie A matches in charge of Inter and suffered five defeats before his dismissal. He was then sacked by Premier League side Crystal Palace after four defeats and no goals in his first four matches.

In 2018, he was named manager of Major League Soccer side Atlanta United and the led them to the Eastern Conference final, where they lost 4-2 to Toronto FC.
