Hudson O’Neal Lands MasterSbilt Race Cars Ride

Published in Racing
Saturday, 23 November 2019 13:56

MARTINSVILLE, Ind. – After several weeks of uncertainty and job searching, Hudson O’Neal has found his next opportunity in dirt late model racing, and it’s a familiar one to his family.

The 19-year-old O’Neal will serve as the lead driver for the reactivated MasterSbilt Race Cars program, chasing the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series championship for the same team that his father, Don O’Neal, once piloted entries for several years ago.

The Crothersville, Ind.-based chassis manufacturer, which hasn’t raced on a national scale since a short-lived Lucas Oil tour run with Ray Cook in 2014, looks to contend for top honors on the road with the second-generation O’Neal.

O’Neal won the Jackson 100 at his home track, Brownstown (Ind.) Speedway, to pocket $15,000.

“This is a really good opportunity,” O’Neal told SPEED SPORT by phone Saturday afternoon. “It’s always a relief when you know you have a job; that helps and it definitely takes a lot of stress off my shoulders. But I think this is going to be good for not only me, but for MasterSbilt Race Cars. We have an amazing opportunity to do something for me and them here, by getting them back out on the road and to sell some race cars to hopefully get MasterSbilt back to where it once was.

“All in all, I think this is a great opportunity for me, Tader and all of the people who are serving as a part of this deal,” he added. “It all works out really well, I feel like.”

O’Neal admitted that Saturday’s announcement came together in the weeks following the World Finals at The Dirt Track at Charlotte, and that it was thanks to his father that he was able to slide into the seat for Tader Masters and the MasterSbilt operation.

“This all started with my dad; he’s had that relationship with the Masters family for a while and they’ve always meant a lot to the O’Neal family where we’ve always had a close relationship with them,” the younger O’Neal explained. “But it originally started with dad and was something that he was looking to do if his deal with Bowyer didn’t work out (Don O’Neal is still working on plans with CBR for 2020). All the cards just played right, with my deal not working out again. So it all just came together really nice.

“This is not something that I have thought about personally for a long time; it’s been about a two-week process for me and it maybe happening with me, and I’m just thankful it’s all working out.”

O’Neal will drive a yellow paint scheme and carry his now-familiar No. 71, nodding back to his father’s days with MasterSbilt, when Don O’Neal earned four top-five finishes in the Lucas Oil standings and won multiple crown jewel events, including two North/South 100s, the Dirt Late Model Dream, the Lucas Oil Late Model Knoxville Nationals and the Silver Dollar Nationals.

The move to MasterSbilt comes on the heels of Hudson’s departure from the Todd Burns-owned SSI Motorsports team, which recently announced it would not field a dirt late model in 2020.

O’Neal spent nearly four years under Burns’ tutelage and had a breakout year this season, winning four times with the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series  and finishing the campaign seventh in points.

Now, he’s looking forward to the next chapter with another owner that he and his family consider a close friend.

“It’d be nice to go out and light it up like we did this year. We won those four (races) with Lucas and then won the prelim at Eldora … but we also have to keep in mind that this might not happen overnight,” O’Neal noted. “There is a big learning process that we’ll have to go through with not only me, but for these race cars too. So it’s going to be really good to just kind of feel everything out.

“We’ll see what we have in our favor and go from there,” he continued. “We’ll kick it off during Speedweeks and see where all it goes after that, but I’m excited man, I really am.”

While full sponsorship for the effort is still in the works, the team will receive Jay Dickens engines from Indiana’s Jim Beeman, who will support the team during the upcoming year.

“We’ve had a great relationship over the years with the O’Neal family, and it’s definitely exciting to have an O’Neal back in one of our race cars,” Masters said. “The hope is that this works out well for all of us. It’s tough out there (on the road) though, and no one will cut you any slack or give an inch. You have to go out there and earn it. We have a long way to go to put this all together, so that’s what we’re working on now and we’ll start next season and see how we fire off.

“Hudson and I have talked about it and we both know that this deal is going to be an uphill battle, but we’ll both give it our best and see what we can do with it.”

ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. — Brendon Todd made six birdies on the front nine to seize control and shot 8-under 62 on Saturday at Sea Island to take a two-shot lead into the final round of the RSM Classic as he goes for his third straight PGA Tour victory.

Todd, who overcame a case of the full yips that nearly drove him from the game, is coming off victories in the inaugural Bermuda Championship and the Mayakoba Golf Classic.

He was at 18-under 194, two shots ahead of Webb Simpson (63) and Sebastian Munoz (66).

Tyler Duncan, who started with a two-shot lead, made 18 pars for a 70 and fell four shots behind.

Todd is trying to become the first player since Dustin Johnson in 2017 to win three consecutive starts.

NAPLES, Fla. - Sei Young Kim had only one birdie on the back nine and held on for a 4-under 68 and a one-shot lead over Nelly Korda, who made a charge going into the final round of the CME Group Tour Championship with the richest prize ever in women’s golf on the line.

Kim led by as many as five shots with three birdies over the opening seven holes, but when she stopped converting birdie chances on the back nine of Tiburon Golf Club, Korda made her move.

Korda began the back nine with three straight birdies, including a bunker shot she holed, and shot 31 on the back for a 66.

Kim was at 16-under 200 and will be in the final group with Korda. At stake is $1.5 million to the winner.

Rules official clears Todd's putter grip after miss

ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – Brendon Todd’s 8-under 62 Saturday at the RSM Classic was nearly perfect.

Todd, who leads by two in his quest to win his third consecutive event, was bogey-free for the day, hitting 14 of 14 fairways and 17 of 18 greens in regulation. He had nine one-putts.

The only time things didn’t go according to plan was on the 14th hole, but his concern had nothing to do with his swing or his game.

Todd narrowly missed his 11-footer for birdie and quickly noticed something wrong with his putter.

“I kind of ran my hands down the shaft in frustration,” he said. “There's this rubber end to the grip that I guess is rolled up and it can roll down, so I rolled it down on accident and I just wanted to make sure that wouldn't be a non-conforming club if I rolled it back up, or putted with it down.”

Todd called over a rules official who informed him his putter was still conforming and that he could continue using it.

Aguero could miss Manchester derby due to injury

Published in Soccer

Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero is a doubt for the derby with United after limping off during the 2-1 win over Chelsea on Saturday.

The Argentine, who has scored 13 goals this season, was forced off in the second half at the Etihad Stadium after a challenge from Reece James and is set to undergo a scan on Sunday.

City face Shakhtar Donetsk, Newcastle and Burnley before United's visit on Dec. 7.

"We will see but it doesn't look good," said Guardiola. "I think it's muscular. He thought it was a kick but i think he stretched a little bit.

"He is going to be out some days during the toughest part of our season."

Guardiola has already lost Leroy Sane and Aymeric Laporte to long-term knee injury and saw midfielders Rodri and David Silva also go off injured against Chelsea. Oleks Zinchenko remains sidelined.

"With Rodri and David they were problems with cramp and tiredness," said Guardiola. "Rodri went a month and a half without playing many games.

"This kind of game is so demanding because the physicality is incredible. That's why it happened."

Flamengo beat River to win first Copa Lib since '81

Flamengo won the Copa Libertadores for the first time in 38 years as they beat defending champions River Plate 2-1 with two last-gasp goals from Gabriel Barbosa on Saturday.

Defending champion River opened the scoring in front of more than 65,000 fans at Monumental Stadium in the 14th minute through striker Rafael Santos Borré, and the Argentine side looked good to become the first back-to-back winner in 18 years.

However, Barbosa, the striker on loan from Inter Milan, tapped in from close range with a minute left and then rifled home from the top of the penalty area to secure victory in astonishing fashion.

Barbosa was then sent off seconds before the final whistle, following a red card for River's Exequiel Palacios.

The result gave Flamengo only their second Libertadores triumph and means they will represent the South American confederation in the Club World Cup in Qatar in December.

The final in Lima was the first to be played on a one-off basis at a neutral venue in the tournament's 60-year history.

The match had originally been scheduled to take place in Santiago but was switched to Lima earlier this month because of political unrest in the Chilean capital.

The change came a year after the second leg of the final between River Plate and Boca Juniors was moved to Madrid after River fans attacked the Boca coach as it approached the stadium.

Fans of the red-and-black team might have an even more memorable weekend. Flamengo will win the Brazilian championship on Sunday with four games in hand if second-placed Palmeiras fails to beat Gremio. The Rio club will then lift its seventh national title, and first since 2009.

Man City beat Chelsea with show of character

Published in Soccer
Saturday, 23 November 2019 13:00

MANCHESTER, England -- Pep Guardiola's Manchester City have proven their footballing ability beyond doubt, but if this season is more a gauge of their character, they passed an important test by beating Chelsea 2-1.

There was a point earlier on Saturday when Crystal Palace were holding leaders Liverpool, meaning a City win would have closed the gap at the top of the Premier League to seven points. Instead, Guardiola's players had to recover from news of another late winner for the leaders, this time courtesy of Roberto Firmino at Selhurst Park.

Moreover, N'Golo Kante's 21st-minute opener for Chelsea meant City, who just 13 days lost 3-1 at Liverpool, had to come from behind to ensure the distance remained at nine. That they did so, sealing the club's 400th victory in the Premier League, sealed a move back into third place above Chelsea, and the character on show should not be underestimated.

It came at a cost -- Sergio Aguero limped off with an injury that could see him miss the Manchester derby, while David Silva and Rodri were also ailing -- but on a day when the passing was not quite as crisp and the chances were not quite as frequent, the champions found a way. Small wonder, then, that Guardiola hailed "a great victory." He is refusing to throw in the towel in his search for three consecutive titles, and his team served notice they do not intend to, either.

Guardiola spoke after the game about "suffering" and, pointedly, "determination." It felt like a fair summary given that midway through the first half, three points looked anything but certain. Willian had already fizzed a shot just wide of the far post for the visitors, when Mateo Kovacic flicked a pass over the head of Fernandinho and into Kante's path.

The French midfielder used the yard of space left by fellow countryman Benjamin Mendy to draw Ederson -- back in the City team after injury -- out of his goal and Kante rolled his finish into the net. Frank Lampard had his hand in the air long before the ball crawled over the line, just out of Fernandinho's reach. Aymeric Laporte, in the stands, winced at the defending. If City are to win the league, they need him back quickly.

The equaliser, nine minutes later, was fortuitous and against the run of play. A loose ball ricocheted off Fikayo Tomori and into Kevin De Bruyne's path and he needed another deflection off Kurt Zouma to wrong-foot Kepa Arrizabalaga. Not all goals have to be beautiful and not all title wins have to be achieved with 100 points.

"We scored a goal when they were better," said Guardiola. "Normally we believe you have to be better to score it, but in that moment they were better."

City's second, on 37 minutes, was far more pleasing on the eye. The hitherto quiet Riyad Mahrez collected possession on the right, then drove infield past Kovacic and Emerson Palmieri before firing a shot inside the far post. The goal was so good that it was applauded when the replay was shown on the Etihad Stadium's big screens.

In the space of eight minutes, Chelsea fans' chant of "champions of Europe, you'll never sing that" had been drowned out by a chorus of "champions of England, we know what we are" from the home support.

In the second half, Kepa saved from Mahrez and the VAR, Andre Marriner, ruled out a late third from Raheem Sterling, who late bemoaned his misfortune on social media. At the other end, Mason Mount came closest to an equaliser for Chelsea with a free kick that flashed wide.

Lampard, on his return to the club at which he played the final year of his Premier League career in 2014-15, can count himself unlucky that Chelsea suffered defeat in the league for the first time since Sep. 22. It said everything about the performance of his young team that City were restricted to just 47% possession, the joint-lowest recorded by a Guardiola-managed team in 381 top-flight games.

"There is always one thing in your lifetime that hasn't happened," the City boss said. "It happened. So, OK, I have another record, I won one game without possession. They are incredible team with Kante, Kovacic, Jorginho, so it can happen. Frank is a courageous manager. I try to judge managers, not good manager, bad manager, but a manager with courage to play."

After Champions League commitments in midweek, City and Liverpool each play three league games in seven days. The champions visit Newcastle and Burnley before hosting Manchester United, while the leaders are at home to Brighton and Everton, then visit Bournemouth.

It is such weeks that help decide title races and City -- with grit and fight rather than flair and beauty -- made sure they are still in the hunt. Guardiola would rather be the manager nine points clear but Liverpool, unbeaten in 30 league games, have the pressure of history on their shoulders as they look for a first title since 1990.

"We will see," Guardiola said when asked about City's title chances. It is not over yet.

NFL punishes 33 players for Steelers-Browns fight

Published in Breaking News
Saturday, 23 November 2019 14:10

The NFL has disciplined 33 players from the Pittsburgh Steelers and Cleveland Browns -- with fines totaling $732,422 -- as penalty for the brawl that broke out in the closing seconds of their game on Nov. 14.

The league on Saturday fined 29 players -- including Pittsburgh's Minkah Fitzpatrick and Cleveland's Jarvis Landry -- $3,507 apiece for "entering the fight area."

Browns defensive end Myles Garrett was suspended indefinitely and fined $45,623 for ripping off and swinging Mason Rudolph's helmet, hitting the Steelers quarterback in the head with it during Cleveland's 21-7 win on "Thursday Night Football."

Garrett lost his appeal this week and stands to lose about $1.2 million in salary for missing the six remaining games.

Rudolph, who was not suspended, was slapped with the biggest fine of $50,000. Pittsburgh center Maurkice Pouncey, who won an appeal reducing his suspension from three to two games, was fined $35,096 for fighting.

Browns defensive tackle Larry Ogunjobi was suspended for one game, but his $10,527 fine was rescinded upon appeal.

In addition, both the Browns and Steelers franchises were fined $250,000 each.

Fines collected go to programs for NFL former players.

Three Cleveland players were also fined for plays that happened before the melee.

Safety Damarious Randall was fined $28,075 for unnecessary roughness and was ejected for a hit to the head of Steelers receiver Diontae Johnson, which knocked him out of the game with a concussion.

Defensive end Chad Thomas was fined $21,056 for a hit on Rudolph. From the same play, cornerback Greedy Williams was fined $28,075 for unnecessary roughness on a hit that left Steelers receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster with a concussion, as well.

The Browns travel to Pittsburgh for the rematch Dec. 1.

Source: Westbrook's brother has tiff with Harrell

Published in Basketball

Russell Westbrook's brother was involved in a verbal altercation with LA Clippers forward Montrezl Harrell and escorted out of Staples Center after Friday's game, a source confirmed to ESPN.

The source confirmed that Raynard Westbrook traded words with Harrell after the 122-119 Clippers win over the Houston Rockets. Raynard Westbrook went onto the court during the incident, and he was ultimately asked to leave the arena, the source said.

No further action is planned against Raynard Westbrook, the source said, unless the NBA chooses to pursue the incident.

Yahoo Sports first reported on the Westbrook-Harrell altercation and the ejection.

Russell Westbrook, who missed a 3-point shot with 3.9 seconds left that would have given the Rockets the lead, was also seen trading words with Clippers guard Patrick Beverley while both players were at their respective benches after fouling out.

Westbrook and Beverley have a long-running feud dating back to the Houston-Oklahoma City series in the first round of the 2013 playoffs.

Mohamed ElShorbagy celebrates victory over Mohamed Abouelghar

Abouelghar tests The Beast but Coll goes down in straight games
By ELLIE MAWSON – Squash Mad Correspondent

World No.2 ElShorbagy showcased his mental fortitude to come from a game down against 26-year-old Abouelghar to reach his fourth final of the season, after winning both the China Squash Open and Oracle NetSuite Open titles, before losing out in the final of the U.S. Open last month.

Abouelghar, who was playing in his first semi-final of the season after struggling with a shoulder injury, began the match strongly to race into a 7-0 lead before ElShorbagy was able to get his first point on the board, before taking an 11-2 first game.

The 2017 champion ElShorbagy fought back with dogged determination in the second, when with the scores tied at 9-9, he pushed on to draw back level. The former World No.1 then continued to step further up the court and looked back to his old self as he roared himself to victory to close out a 2-11, 11-9, 11-6, 11-7 win in 49 minutes.

“There was a very crucial time in the second game when we were both 9-9 and I think after that game when I won it, I got into him mentally and physically a little bit,” said ElShorbagy afterwards.

“That’s the time when I pushed really hard at the beginning of the third, just to show him that it was going to take a marathon if you want to get through it and I think I got into him a bit mentally in that third.

“I’m playing my fourth final in five tournaments this season and it’s what I always require from myself coming back every year. I’ve been trying to stay as consistent as I can and being in finals is what I live for. Every season when I do well I have never had a team around me that has told me I have done well, it’s always a team around me that have looked at what I have done wrong this season and that’s what I think has always got me to the top of my game.”

ElShorbagy will face compatriot Gawad for the 15th time in their careers, and for the first time this season, for the PSA World Tour Gold title after the latter scored a comfortable 3-0 victory over New Zealand’s World No.5 Coll.

PSA World Championship runner-up Coll, who lifted the title back in 2016, was unable to find a reply to a free flowing Gawad who dominated the court with ease with his artillery of incredible shots to take an 11-8, 11-4, 11-3 victory and reach his 35th PSA final.

“I have been playing very good squash recently,” said Gawad afterwards. “At the US Open, even if I didn’t win it, I was happy with my game, and in Cairo, I really played some good squash. In the Worlds, I was pretty tired from the Egyptian Open, and somehow, I felt a lot of pressure there.

“I am playing with no expectation other than playing my best squash, not thinking about losing or wining, really, no pressure and that makes all the difference.”

The final of the Channel VAS Championships will take place tomorrow (Sunday November 24) at 15:30 local time (GMT) with the action shown live on SquashTV (rest of world), Eurosport Player (Europe only) and the official Facebook page of the PSA World Tour (Indian Subcontinent only).

2019 Channel VAS Championships at St George’s Hill, Weybridge, Surrey, England.
