One week has passed since the beginning of the signing period for college golf, and the majority of Division I junior players have signed their national letters of intent.

Stanford boasted the clear standout class on the men’s side, signing top-10 2020 recruits Karl Vilips and Michael Thorbjornsen along with Jake Beber-Frankel. On the women’s side, Georgia landed a standout class that included top-50 WAGR players Isabella Holpfer and Candice Mahe. Bale flag celebration angers Real Madrid fans

Published in Soccer
Wednesday, 20 November 2019 00:23

Real Madrid have labelled Gareth Bale's "Wales. Golf. Madrid. In that order" flag celebration "a joke in very bad taste," sources at the club have told ESPN FC.

Wales captain Bale was pictured laughing and joking with teammates while posing with the fan-made banner after his country secured Euro 2020 qualification in Cardiff on Tuesday.

The image has been front page news in Madrid, where the forward has faced persistent criticism of his injury record and questioning of his commitment to Real Madrid.

Senior club figures have told ESPN FC that there is "anger, but also indifference" at what they see as the latest in a long line of issues between Madrid and the player.

Members of the Real Madrid squad found the celebration funny, ESPN FC has been told, but are concerned that it could further damage Bale's already fragile relationship with the club's fans.

Bale has not played for Madrid since October, when he picked up an injury with Wales, before returning to fitness just in time for this latest international break.

On Friday he admitted to feeling "more excitement playing for Wales" than he does for Real Madrid.

"With Wales, I'm speaking my own language and feeling more comfortable" he said. "It's like playing with your mates down the park on a Sunday."

He added: "I've tried to get back as quick as I can. If there had been a Real Madrid game this week, I would've been fit. Maybe to them it doesn't look great but it's just a kind of coincidence."

Earlier this month Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane dismissed the possibility of a January departure for Bale, maintaining that he is counting on him "until the end of the season."

Club sources previously told ESPN FC that they would like Zidane and Bale to mend what has been a troubled relationship, recognising the difficulties involved in negotiating a sale.

Bale came close to leaving the Bernabeu this summer with Zidane's blessing, only for the club to pull the plug on the move.

Real Madrid return to La Liga action on Saturday against Real Sociedad with both sides involved in a congested title race where just two points separate the top five teams.

Macalister Wright, Jackson Bird blow away New South Wales

Tasmania 9 for 251 (Wright 104, Faulkner 49, Hatcher 3-46) beat New South Wales 131 (Sangha 23, Bird 6-25) by 120 runs

New South Wales ended their torrid one-day cup season with yet another loss, and their first wooden-spoon finish in 11 years, as Tasmania's Macalister Wright and Jackson Bird consigned them to a 120-run defeat in Hobart.

Wright put up a Man-of-the-Match performance, scoring a 118-ball 104 to take the hosts to 9 for 251 before Bird ended any hopes of an NSW win by razing through them to finish with career-best figures of 6 for 25.

Tasmania had lost their top three batsmen inside six overs with just 16 runs on the board, the damage caused by the Blues' quicks Liam Hatcher and Harry Conway. Wright, playing only his fifth List A game, helped Tasmania recover, getting his first runs punching Hatcher through extra cover for a boundary.

He scored steadily even as wickets kept falling at the other end and brought up his half-century off 63 balls. James Faulkner joined him and the duo added 109 for the sixth wicket, guiding Tasmania past 200. Wright brought up his maiden List A century off 114 balls and in the process, the 21-year old became the second-youngest Tasmanian after Tim Paine to score a domestic one-day cup ton. He displayed a wide range of strokes, mostly targeting the area behind square, during his knock. An impetus from the No. 8 Nathan Ellis - a 20-ball 25 - further helped Tasmania to a competitive total.

In reply, NSW openers Daniel Hughes and debutant Hayden Kerr were off to a positive start but Bird removed the duo in a span of 12 deliveries. He further dented them with a double-strike in the 11th over, removing Matthew Gilkes for 11 and Jack Edwards for a first-ball duck. From the other end, Simon Milenko dismissed Moises Henriques to leave the visitors reeling at 5 for 55.

A brief 31-run stand - the highest in NSW's innings - between Jason Sangha and captain Peter Nevill also saw its end when Riley Meredith struck to remove the former, while Bird returned to get his five-for with Nevill's wicket. He went on to record the second-best figures for Tasmania in the competition, behind Gurinder Sandhu's 7 for 56 last season, as Nathan McAndrew edged one to the wicketkeeper to become Bird's sixth victim. The last two wickets failed to put up any resistance as NSW folded for 131 in 32.3 overs.

Mourinho appointed Tottenham head coach

Published in Breaking News
Wednesday, 20 November 2019 00:11

Jose Mourinho has been appointed as the new Tottenham Hotspur head coach, the club announced early on Wednesday morning.

The former Manchester United, Chelsea and Real Madrid manager will take over at Spurs on a deal that runs until the end of the 2022-23 season.

Sources told ESPN on Tuesday that Mourinho was the club's No.1 candidate after they sacked Mauricio Pochettino following a poor start to the Premier League season with no other candidates seriously considered. Just hours later, Tottenham confirmed Mourinho as Pochettino's successor.

"In Jose we have one of the most successful managers in football," Spurs chairman Daniel Levy said in a statement. "He has a wealth of experience, can inspire teams and is a great tactician. He has won honours at every club he has coached. We believe he will bring energy and belief to the dressing room."

Mourinho is expected to meet the players at the Tottenham training ground on Wednesday although sources told ESPN that the Spurs squad had no knowledge of plans to sack Pochettino or replace him with the Portuguese.

The 56-year-old will assume full control immediately and is expected to pick the team to face West Ham for his first game on Saturday.

Mourinho returns to lead the third Premier League club of his career. He won three Premier League titles (2004-05, 2005-06, 2014-15) across two stints at Chelsea. From 2016-2018, he was in charge of Manchester United, winning the 2016-17 Europa League crown.

His time at United ended in December 2018 following rising tensions at the club, which saw the team make their worst start to a league campaign after 17 games since the 1990-91 season.

"I am excited to be joining a club with such a great heritage and such passionate supporters," Mourinho said of his appointment. "The quality in both the squad and the academy excites me. Working with these players is what has attracted me."

Overall, Mourinho has managed 305 games in the Premier League -- 212 with Chelsea and 93 with Manchester United.

Mourinho won the Champions League at Porto in 2003 and Inter Milan in 2010 before taking on the Real Madrid job. He failed to win the Champions League trophy with Madrid despite achieving domestic glory in 2011-12.

Pochettino, who moved to Spurs from Southampton in May 2014, led Tottenham to the final of the Champions League last season, where they fell 2-0 to Liverpool in Madrid.

"We were extremely reluctant to make this change and it is not a decision the board has taken lightly, nor in haste," Levy said in a team statement about Pochettino's sacking.

"Regrettably domestic results at the end of last season and beginning of this season have been extremely disappointing."

Tottenham finished in the top four of the Premier League for the past four seasons under Pochettino, who had become a much-loved figure among the fans and players.

Reacting to news of Pochettino's departure, Harry Kane wrote on Twitter: "Gaffer. I'll be forever thankful to you for helping me achieve my dreams. We've had some amazing moments in the last five and a half years that I will never forget.

"You were my manager but my friend as well and I thank you for that relationship. Good luck with your next chapter!"

Mourinho's first return to Old Trafford to face Manchester United will be on Dec. 4, with another former club, Chelsea, on Dec. 22.

Tom Richards on the attack against Richie Fallows

Joe Lee in battle with Declan James in his comeback match at SGH
By ELLIE MAWSON – Squash Mad Correspondent

World No.26 Tom Richards led a quartet of English stars into the second round of the Channel VAS Championships at St. George’s Hill after he beat compatriot Richie Fallows on day one of the PSA World Tour Gold tournament taking place in Weybridge, England.

Richards, a local favourite who trains at the St. George’s Hill Lawn Tennis Club where the tournament is taking place, was too clinical for his opponent as he utilised his knowledge of the permanent glass court to his advantage to down Fallows by an 11-8, 11-6, 11-7 margin.

“I’m lucky that I hit with guys that I know and like and I get to hit on this court a lot, which is a big advantage I think, because it’s very different to a lot of glass courts,” said Richards afterwards.

“The court is a lot different to how it plays normally. A couple of the other players told me that it was a bit dead. I believed them but having played on this court for years and years where it’s lively and bouncy, it’s a bit of a shock.”

Richards will clash with India’s World No.11 Saurav Ghosal in round two today. Joining him in the second round is Nottingham-born Declan James, who conquered wildcard Joe Lee in a tough battle to advance.

Declan James celebrates at the close of his match against Joe Lee

Lee, son of tournament promoter and St George’s Hill head coach Danny Lee, was making his first appearance at a PSA event in over two years after suffering with a serious back injury that saw him require two operations.

The wildcard displayed a stellar performance on his comeback on his home court, however, to put pressure on James, but it was the World No.22 who was able to prevail in three games.

James will take on World No.8 Mohamed Abouelghar for a place in the quarter finals in their first meeting since the Englishman claimed a shock win over the Egyptian at the DPD Open earlier this year.

“It doesn’t matter that Joe has had time out, I have huge respect for him,” said James. “Today, I knew that anything less than my best or 100% mental concentration then he would lap it up because it’s his home court and there is no pressure on him.

“I put pressure on myself and I expect a lot from myself so I’m very happy to win a match like this and be intense for the whole time. It was very hard, even though it was 3-0.”

Daryl Selby in front against Arturo Salazar

World No.42 George Parker and former World No.9 Daryl Selby were the other Englishmen to claim wins on day one after they defeated France’s Lucas Serme and Mexico’s Arturo Salazar, respectively. Parker won a massice contest with Serme that went to five games that lasted 77 minutes but Selby was pleased to get the job done in straight games in 29 minutes.

The longest match of the day saw Egypt’s Youssef Soliman and Spain’s Borja Golan go head-to-head in a gruelling 81-minute fixture with the Egyptian pushing through an injury struggle to book a second round slot against top seed and World No.2 Mohamed ElShorbagy.

The match saw both players push each other to their limits with some gruelling rallies on show. However, it was Soliman, who is 14 years younger than the experienced Golan, who was able to take the advantage and hold his nerve to convert the victory.

“He’s one of the most experienced players on tour,” said Bristol-based Soliman afterwards. “I knew it was always going to be a tough match. It doesn’t matter how old he is, physically he is so good and he always finds a way. I’m really happy to close out the fifth game.

“In the second game, I had a problem with my shin. It was like my leg was tight and planted in the floor, I just couldn’t move. I saw myself having to retire. But the physio worked on it and just released the tightness and I was able to go back on court.”

George Parker pushes through against Lucas Serme

Also advancing to the second round was Soliman’s compatriot Mazen Hesham after he also saw his match go the distance to five-games against England’s Chris Simpson.

The talented Egyptian was forced to battle from 2-1 down against the English World No.45 to reach the last 16 in a topsy-turvy match between the two players with the momentum constantly shifting.

Hesham started confidently to take the first game, before Simpson displayed his own shot-making abilities to absorb the pressure and take a 2-1 lead. It was not enough though as Hesham regained his composure to take the match in five and will now face Peru’s Diego Elias in the last 16.

“I’m really happy to be stood here,” said Hesham following his win. “I really love playing and I cherish every moment now to be honest. I’ve started to really enjoy my game and I think I’ve started to find my range a bit more, I’m playing faster and getting better each tournament.”

Malaysia’s Eain Yow Ng and France’s Mathieu Castagnet were the other victors of the day as they overcame Qatar’s Abdulla Mohd Al Tamimi and Spain’s Iker Pajares Bernabeu in two tough battles.

Al Tamimi struggled to repeat his outstanding form in last week’s World Championship in his home country as the tenacious Yow finished strongly to take the fifth game.

The second round of the Channel VAS Championships begins today (Wednesday November 20) at 17:30 local time (GMT) when the top half of the draw – including World No.2 Mohamed ElShorbagy and Peru’s World No.7 Diego Elias – begin their tournaments.

Miami, Nashville make MLS Expansion Draft picks

Published in Soccer
Tuesday, 19 November 2019 16:41

Inter Miami CF and Nashville SC made their selections in the 2019 MLS Expansion Draft, with Nashville immediately trading two of the picks.

Existing MLS teams were allowed to protect 12 players, with Homegrown players and Generation adidas signings -- players signed from a club's academy or who left college early -- were also protected. MLS clubs can only lose at most one player in the entire draft.

Inter Miami selected New York City FC outside back Ben Sweat, FC Cincinnati fullback Alvas Powell, LAFC midfielder Lee Nguyen, Columbus Crew midfielder Luis Argudo and Seattle Sounders goalkeeper Bryan Meredith.

"We're excited about what we were able to accomplish with this draft," said Inter Miami Sporting Director Paul McDonough. "We feel we are gaining momentum ahead of the 2020 season."

Nashville chose Minnesota United forward Abu Danladi, the No. 1 pick in the 2017 SuperDraft, Portland Timbers outside back Zarek Valentin, defender Jalil Anibaba from the New England Revolution, Atlanta United forward Brandon Vazquez, and Sporting Kansas City defender Jimmy Medranda.

Nashville then engaged in a flurry of moves. Valentin was sent to the Houston Dynamo for goalkeeper Joe Willis. Houston will also receive $75,000 in 2021 Targeted Allocation Money (TAM) if Willis meets certain performance-related incentives. Vasquez was shipped to FC Cincinnati for $150,000 in (TAM) in 2020 and $50,000 in incentive-based General Allocation Money (GAM) in 2021.

Nashville GM Mike Jacobs then raided his old club, Sporting Kansas City, by acquiring goalkeeper Adrian Zendejas for $50,000 in 2020 GAM and $125,000 in 2020 TAM plus an international roster spot in 2020. Nashville also acquired U.S. international left back Daniel Lovitz from the Montreal Impact in exchange for $50,000 in 2020 GAM and $50,000 in 2020 TAM, as well as an international roster spot.

Inter Miami's lone trade of the day saw them acquire the No. 3 pick in the 2020 MLS SuperDraft from FC Cincinnati in exchange for $150,000 in 2020 GAM.

Mourinho's first match in charge of Tottenham is away at West Ham on Saturday, with a return to Old Trafford to face Manchester United coming on Dec. 4. Mourinho faces another former club, Chelsea, on Dec. 22.

Jess Jonassen's blitzy 63 not out off 29 balls extended the Brisbane Heat's lead at the top of the WBBL table with a six-run win against the Melbourne Renegades at the Junction Oval. The Renegades gave the visitors a scare as they needed 21 from 12 balls, and later 15 off the last over, but they lost three wickets in the last four balls, including two run-outs, and fell short to remain on ten points. The Heat got a stable start from opener Maddy Green's 32 off 31 before Jonassen walked out at the halfway mark at 57 for 2. Wickets fell around her but Jonassen propelled the run rate from under six to over 7.5 per over by smashing six fours and three sixes. The Heat collected 42 off the last three overs, with five fours and two sixes from Jonassen alone to post a strong 5 for 153. The Renegades got a promising start with Danni Wyatt's 40 off 18 but once she holed out to deep midwicket off Amelia Kerr in the eighth over, the hosts found it tough to stay on top of the chase, with only two more batters able to score at more than run a ball. Jonassen finished with 1 for 27 from her four overs to be named the Player of the Match.

Sana Mir, Pakistan women's most-capped player, has taken a break from international cricket to "plan and reset my future objectives and targets". A PCB statement said Mir would miss next month's ODI and T20I series against England in Malaysia. Mir, or the PCB, did not specify her exact reason for the break or when she would be back in action.

"I have decided to take a break from international cricket and, as such, will not be available for selection for next month's series against England. I will utilise this time to plan and reset my future objectives and targets," Mir said in the release.

"My best wishes will remain with the Pakistan national women's team in the series against England and I am sure they'll produce their best cricket."

A training camp of 20 probables will begin in Karachi on November 21 before the squads for the ODIs and T20Is are announced on November 27. The team will depart for Kuala Lumpur on November 30.

The ODIs, part of the ICC Women's Championship, will be played on December 9, 12 and 14 before the T20Is on December 17, 19 and 20. All six games will be played at the Kinrara Oval.

The former Manchester United, Chelsea and Real Madrid manager will take over at Spurs on a deal that runs until the end of the 2022-23 season.

Sources told ESPN on Tuesday that Mourinho was club's No.1 candidate after they sacked Mauricio Pochettino following a poor start to the Premier League season.

"I am excited to be joining a club with such a great heritage and such passionate supporters," said Mourinho of his appointment. "The quality in both the squad and the academy excites me. Working with these players is what has attracted me."

Overall, Mourinho has managed 305 games in the Premier League (212 with Chelsea, 93 with Manchester United).

Mourinho won the Champions League at Porto (2003) and Inter Milan (2010) before taking on the Real Madrid job. He failed to win the Champions League trophy with Madrid despite achieving domestic glory in 2011-12.

Pochettino, who moved to Spurs from Southampton in May 2014, led Tottenham to the final of the UEFA Champions League last season, where they fell 2-0 to Liverpool in Madrid.

Tottenham finished in the top four of the Premier League for the past four seasons under Pochettino, who had become a much-loved figure among the fans.

Mourinho's first match in charge of Tottenham is away at West Ham on Saturday, with a return to Old Trafford to face Manchester United coming on Dec. 4. Mourinho faces another former club, Chelsea, on Dec. 22.
