Drydene Named Xtreme DIRTcar Title Sponsor

Published in Racing
Friday, 15 November 2019 09:13

CONCORD, N.C. — DIRTcar Racing officials have announced that Drydene Performance Products has been named title sponsor of the Drydene Xtreme DIRTcar Series ahead of its winter season opener on Nov. 24 at Cherokee Speedway for the Blue Gray 100.

A new series logo in the familiar red-and-white Drydene colors has been unveiled and Drydene will be posting a number of product awards at each of the series’ events, including five $5,000-to-win, $500-to-start, 40-lap features in addition to the $10,000-to-win season opener in Gaffney, S.C.

“Drydene continues to be impressed with everything we do in dirt track racing and the Drydene Xtreme DIRTcar Series provides us with a platform to carry that momentum through the winter with top-notch Late Model events at some of the finest tracks in the South,” said Dave Klinger, President of Drydene Performance Products

The Drydene Xtreme DIRTcar Series features a $45,000 cash point fund with $20,000 to the champion, $10,000 to second place, $5,000 to third place and $1,000 to any driver with perfect attendance. In addition to the point fund, any driver qualifying for all six races is guaranteed a minimum of $4,000, by virtue of the $1,000 perfect attendance bonus, plus six races at $500 to start.

Championship points will be compiled in unique fashion, giving each driver a mulligan, meaning if six races are completed, only the five best finishes will count. If five races are completed, only the four best finishes will count, and so on.

A driver is not required to run every race to have a shot at first, second or third-place payoffs. Additionally, in order to soften the blow of a DNF under traditional point systems, points will be awarded on the basis of 15 points for a win, followed by 13, 12, 11, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, and five points for 10th through 22nd, with two points awarded to all non-qualifiers.

Standard race formats will include group qualifying, three heat races with a top-two redraw and one Last Chance Showdown leading into the 40-lap feature. There will be one track provisional and one series provisional at each event.

Tire rules will include Hoosier 1350/1600 with a D70 emergency RR option, along with American Racer 48/56 with a 70 emergency RR option. Hoosier 1300 and American Racer 44 tires will be allowed only for the Blue Gray 100 Carolina Clash Super Late Model Series co-sanctioned event.

Charges against Maple Leafs' Matthews dropped

Disorderly conduct charges against Toronto Maple Leafs center Auston Matthews were dismissed Wednesday.

"I just want to reiterate again just how truly sorry I am for my actions and my behavior," Matthews said Thursday night, according to TSN. "I never meant to cause any distress to this woman, and I can assure you that I've learned from my mistakes and my actions."

According to the police report obtained by ESPN, the incident occurred May 26 at 2 a.m. local time in Matthews' hometown of Scottsdale, Arizona. A security guard was sitting inside her car outside the condo building where Matthews lives when she was disturbed by the sound of someone trying to open her door. She allegedly got out of her car and confronted Matthews, who she said was intoxicated.

As Matthews walked away, he "pulled his pants down, bent over and grabbed his butt cheeks," though he kept on his underwear, the woman told police.

Matthews signed a five-year, $58.17 million contract extension with the Maple Leafs in February. He was the top draft pick of Toronto in 2016, becoming the seventh American to be drafted No. 1. He was born in California and raised in Arizona.

SUN CITY, South Africa – Zander Lombard shot a 7-under-par 65 to overtake fellow South African Louis Oosthuizen and take a two-shot lead after two rounds at the Nedbank Golf Challenge on Friday.

Lombard, who has just one professional title and none on the European Tour, bogeyed the first but that was his only dropped shot of the day at Gary Player Country Club in Sun City. He collected five birdies and an eagle on the par-5 No. 10 to move to 11 under par and put himself in contention for his maiden tour title at his country's most prestigious tournament.

Oosthuizen led by three after a first-round 63 despite struggling with kidney stones. He couldn't take that momentum into the second round. He made three birdies and three bogeys for a par 72 to slip two shots behind.

Thomas Detry was third on 7 under, four off the lead, and Tommy Fleetwood moved up to a tie for fourth with Marcus Kinhult with a second successive 69. They were five off the pace.

Defending champion Lee Westwood, seeking a record-breaking fourth title at Sun City, went 1 over to slip eight shots behind Lombard.

Lombard came through qualifying school only last year and endured a run of eight missed cuts this year.

He said he decided to attack the course on Friday after starting with a 68. It paid off.

"We were just fighting for a birdie every hole, not looking at the leaderboard or figuring out if we were going to just make par," he said. "We were trying to make a birdie every hole. It was my mindset. I was being aggressive and being positive and it went my way today."

Race to Dubai leader Bernd Wiesberger was in sight of the leaders after a 3-under 69 put him seven shots behind in a tie for ninth.

Ernie Els, who has also won the Nedbank title three times, saw his early promise disappear. Els started with a 68 to be on the first-round leaderboard but he struggled with an 81 in round two, which included three double bogeys.

Sources: Man Utd make Haaland enquiry in Jan

Published in Soccer

Manchester United are ready to bring forward a formal approach for Erling Haaland after seeing the teenager's value sky rocket during the first half of the season, sources have told ESPN FC.

United are set to enquire about the Red Bull Salzburg striker's availability in January as fears grow that waiting until the summer could see his price increase even further and see them leapfrogged in the queue by European heavyweights including Juventus, Barcelona and Real Madrid.

- When does the transfer window reopen?
- All major completed transfer deals
- Could Haaland vs. Mbappe be next Messi vs. Ronaldo?

Haaland was earmarked as a target by manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer -- who worked with the teenager at Molde -- more than a year ago but a blistering start to the campaign has seen the 19-year-old become one of the hottest prospects in world football. He has scored 26 goals in 18 games, including seven in four Champions League appearances making him the competition's top scorer.

Sources have told ESPN FC he is already rated at more than £85 million by Salzburg. United, according to sources, are willing to explore the possibility of signing Haaland in January and loaning him back to the Austrian side for the remainder of the campaign in an attempt to avoid a bidding war in the summer.

Solskjaer is looking to strengthen his forward line and midfield following the summer departures of Romelu Lukaku, Alexis Sanchez and Ander Herrera.

Haaland is a key target along with Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho, Leicester midfielder James Maddison, Bournemouth striker Callum Wilson, West Ham's Declan Rice, Aston Villa pair John McGinn and Jack Grealish and Lyon forward Moussa Dembele.

United are prepared to spend in January but only if long-term targets are available. Solskjaer has been adamant there will be no panic spending despite sitting seventh in the table, nine points adrift of the top four.

Meanwhile, sources have told ESPN FC that United are yet to receive an approach from Roma to turn Chris Smalling's season-long loan into a permanent deal.

Smalling has impressed since moving to Italy in the summer prompting speculation that Roma want to keep the 29-year-old beyond the end of the season but a formal offer has not yet been submitted.

Heavy rain sees Durban's second MSL washout

Durban Heat v Paarl Rocks Match abandoned

Durban Heat were due to have played three matches in this year's Mzansi Super League (MSL), but they have yet to complete one thanks to the weather. Their home fixture against the Paarl Rocks was called off 10 minutes before the scheduled toss after the umpires deemed the outfield too wet following days of heavy rain.

South Africa's east coast has been affected by severe storms in the last two-and-a-half weeks, which have claimed 16 lives and seen the unusual occurrence of tornados. Up to 150mm of rain fell over the province between Thursday and Friday and though the worst is believed to be over, Kingsmead was in no condition to host a match. It has less than two days to recover, with the next fixture scheduled for Sunday morning at 10am, when the Heat are due to host Cape Town Blitz.

The home team will be desperate for things to be dry by then because they have yet to get their campaign underway. Their opening fixture against the Tshwane Spartans at home was washed out and the return match in Centurion interrupted by a power cut and then rain. The Heat have only played 7.1 overs of cricket in the tournament so far but looked good and had the Spartans 33 for 4 at the time.

Despite their poor fortune, the Heat remain off the bottom of the points table, in fifth position, with four points from their three matches. The Rocks have only completed one match and are due to play their third, on Sunday in Paarl, against the Spartans.

Ajinkya Rahane, Trent Boult and Mayank Markande have all got a raise in the IPL by being traded to other franchises before the 2020 auction next month. Rahane earned an extra INR 1.25 crores as he was picked for INR 5.25 crores by his new franchise Delhi Capitals, compared to the INR 4 crores Rajasthan Royals had paid for him in the 2018 auction.

Similarly, Boult earned an extra INR 1 crore in an all-cash deal, since Mumbai Indians paid INR 3.2 crores for him compared to Capitals' original outlay of INR 2.2 crores for him in 2018. Markande, the least experienced of the three, got the biggest raise among them, of INR 1.8 crores. His new franchise Royals paid INR 2 crores for him, after the double-trade from Mumbai, who paid INR 20 lakhs for him in 2018. Mumbai first traded him to Capitals, who then passed him on to Royals.

There were a total of 11 trades this time before the upcoming auction. The most high-profile one, apart from Rahane's, was of R Ashwin, who led Kings XI during the last two seasons and moved to the Capitals, who paid his 2018 hammer price of INR 7.6 crore. As part of the exchange, Capitals traded Karnataka spinner J Suchith to Kings XI for just INR 20 lakhs.

As part of the Rahane trade, the Royals got a pair of legspinners for a total of INR 5 crores: Rahul Tewatia (3 crores) and Markande (2 crores). During the trade, Markande also became the first player in the IPL to be traded twice between two seasons. He was in fact the first trade after Capitals bought him from defending champions Mumbai. In return, Mumbai bought West Indies allrounder Sherfane Rutherford (INR 2 crore in the 2018 auction) from Capitals.

Meghalaya stun Mumbai in Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy

Published in Cricket
Friday, 15 November 2019 10:05

A star-studded Mumbai suffered a shock defeat at the hands of Meghalaya in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2019-20, going down by six wickets against a team that came into being only last season.

Meghalaya, who have been a mid-table Plate League team in their brief existence, first restricted Mumbai to 157 for 6, and then chased the target down in 19.2 overs, riding on half-centuries from two of their professionals, Dwarka Ravi Teja (61* off 45) and Sanjay Yadav (55 off 44).

It completed an excellent day for Ravi Teja, who had got the wicket of Shreyas Iyer when Meghalaya bowled.

Mumbai had gotten off to a brisk start, with the opening duo of Jay Bista and Aditya Tare putting on a good stand once again with 73 in 8.2 overs, but a power-packed batting line-up was strangled in the second half of the innings. All of Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav and Siddhesh Lad could barely go at above a run a ball.

Both openers fell to medium pacer Swarajeet Das in the ninth over. Thereafter, Abhay Negi, Amiangshu Sen and Ravi Teja all struck, to deny Mumbai momentum or a big partnership.

Puneet Bisht got Meghalaya's chase off to a brisk start with 23 off 12, but Mumbai's opening ball duo of Dhawal Kulkarni and Shardul Thakur struck early to reduce them to 41 for 3 in the fourth over. That's when Ravi Teja and Yadav got together in a stand that yielded 92 runs in just 12.3 overs.

Although Yadav fell with 25 runs needed off 23 balls, Ravi Teja stayed till the end to steer the team home.

This was Mumbai's first loss in the tournament, and while the result didn't affect their place at the top of Group D table, but narrowed their lead.

Tamil Nadu bowlers rout Tripura

In a Group B match, Tamil Nadu restricted Tripura to just 79 for 8 in 20 overs, before chasing down the target in 12.1 overs with eight wickets in the bag.

Tripura's score was a lot more than they looked like getting when they had been reduced to 9 for 7 in 5.1 overs, in danger of being bowled out for a record low total. However, No.8 Saurabh Das and No.9 Neelambuj Vats both hit career-best scores to ensure ignominy was averted. Das made 44, falling off the last ball of the match, while Vats was unbeaten on 28, with their partnership worth 70 runs.

For Tamil Nadu, the new-ball duo of R Sai Kishore and T Natarajan did the majority of the damage. Sai Kishore had 4 for 6 in four overs, while Natarajan had 3 for 4.

Tamil Nadu sent Washington Sundar to open the batting, perhaps with a view to get the target quickly and improve their net run-rate, and Washington smacked 46 off 32. He was out with just four runs needed for victory and the promoted M Ashwin fell next over, before Tamil Nadu completed victory.

They now have 16 points, the same as Vidarbha, but a higher net run-rate and are therefore at the top of the Group B table.

Source: AB meeting with NFL lasted eight hours

Published in Breaking News

Wide receiver Antonio Brown's meeting Thursday with the NFL to address sexual assault allegations against him lasted about eight hours, and there could be follow-ups before a decision is made about his future, a source told ESPN's Josina Anderson.

The meeting took place in Florida. Brown has denied the allegations.

The NFL had three representatives at the interview, which was led by Lisa Friel, the source said. Friel is the NFL's senior vice president/special counsel for investigations.

The source said Brown felt it went well and that he was responsive to the NFL's questions.

Sources had told ESPN's Adam Schefter has reported that, barring a significant turn of events, Brown is not expected to play again this season.

Brown, 31, is being investigated by the NFL under its personal conduct policy following a lawsuit filed by his former trainer, Britney Taylor, that alleges she was sexually assaulted by Brown on multiple occasions. Brown also was accused of sexual misconduct at his home by an artist who was working there in 2017.

He has officially been served lawsuit papers from Taylor, sources told ESPN, and has hired attorney Camille Blanton to handle the case.

Brown has played in only one game this season -- Week 2 against the Miami Dolphins. He was released by the Oakland Raiders before the season and by the New England Patriots before Week 3, after it was made known that he sent text messages to the artist who accused him of misconduct.

He has filed eight grievances against the Raiders and Patriots, a source told ESPN's Dan Graziano. Brown is seeking $39.775 million in lost salary, bonuses and guaranteed money.
