SHEHEEN: Visiting The World Challenge Paddock

MOORESVILLE, N.C. — We had the opportunity to check out the Blancpain GT World Challenge America at Las Vegas Motor Speedway and a solid paddock, featuring entries from Ferrari, Porsche, Acura, Mercedes, BMW and Bentley, gave fans plenty to see.

While talking to a variety of team principals in the garage area, we learned that almost every car in the GT3 category, the top tier in the series, has a price tag around $500,000. In addition to the car, we were told it takes another $1.5 million to be competitive.

For top-level sports car racing that’s pretty reasonable these days. The tour runs seven weekends with two races per weekend.

The DXDT Racing squad, which runs a Mercedes-AMG GT3 for George Kurtz and Colin Braun, likes the flexibility of working with SRO Motorsports Group, which organizes the series.

Team members praised SRO officials for their willingness to listen and work with each team on their individual needs. This helps make competing in the series not only a success on the track, but off of it as well with business-to-business opportunities.

– The K-Pax Racing Bentley Continental GT3 is one of the most unique race cars in the series. Although the second-generation Continental is big in size, it doesn’t weigh any more than its competitors.

One reason is the carbon-fiber body. Bentley did a great job with the balance of the car, but the aero package is spectacular. Massive tunnels at the rear of the car give the big Bentley an aero advantage.

By the way, like a true British car, the Bentley race car is right-hand drive.

– Nate Vincent, who was second in the TC America standings behind his teammate Michael Hurczyn heading into the season finale, took us for a thrilling ride around the LVMS road course aboard his Team FCP Euro Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR.

The two-liter, four-cylinder turbo cranks out 350 horsepower and propels the 2,800-pound car to speeds north of 150 mph.

The cars come off of the Volkswagen assembly line and get shipped to Spain where they are prepped for racing. The Golf GTI doesn’t have ABS brakes but is equipped with a sequential gearbox and front-wheel drive.

The cars are delivered ready to race for around $140,000.

– The racing portion of Bike Week at Daytona Int’l Speedway has evolved significantly over the years.

For decades, the legendary Daytona 200 was the most prestigious motorcycle road race in North America. Factory race teams and their high-profile riders traveled from all over the world to Florida each March looking to add a Daytona victory to their résumés.

With the demise of AMA Superbike, the premier motorcycle road racing series in the United States, the Daytona 200 lost some of its luster and it’s not on the schedule for MotoAmerica, currently this country’s top level of motorcycle road racing.

Now, DIS officials have paired the Daytona 200 and the American Flat Track Series season opener to run on the same day — March 14.

The road racers will hit the big road course in the afternoon, with the flat trackers under the lights at night.

The doubleheader will provide a full day and night of racing. However, for those of us who remember the halcyon days of the Daytona 200, it’s more evidence it’s not the prestigious race it once was.

The biggest and most prestigious event of Bike Week is now the Daytona Supercross, which celebrates its 50th running next year.

– It’s rare when Porsche and Corvette racers see eye to eye. However, longtime Porsche wheelman Darren Law and well-known Corvette factory driver Johnny O’Connell are teaming up with their new Performance Track Day program.

The program is a fantasy camp for those who want to find the limits of their personal car and themselves. The first event is Dec. 8 at Apex Motor Club in Maricopa, Ariz., near Phoenix.

O’Connell and Law will attend each event, providing maximum coaching opportunities for drivers of all skill levels. If interested, visit performancetrackday.com.

– While hosting a special presentation honoring the late Jim Perkins for Hendrick Motorsports, I visited with Rick Hendrick about the new C8 Corvette.

Hendrick’s personal collection of Corvettes is one of the finest in the world.

When asked if he planned on bidding for serial No. 1 of the new eighth-generation Corvette during the upcoming Barrett-Jackson auction in Scottsdale, Ariz., he paused and said, “I might have buyer’s remorse if I get that one.”

Hendrick believes serial No. 1 of the new mid-engine Corvette could go as high as $2.5 or $3 million.

BCCI will be a "bit more practical" when scheduling matches in the northern parts of India during winter, board president Sourav Ganguly has said, in the wake of Delhi hosting the first T20I between India and Bangladesh on Sunday. Ganguly was addressing a question about consulting the Central Pollution Control Board in the future with respect to using Delhi as a venue.

Delhi has, for the last few years, struggled with hazardous air pollution and smog, with the peaks usually occurring in late October and early November. Presently, air quality in areas as close as 3km from the stadium is marked as hazardous. Pollution had interrupted the Delhi Test in December 2017 as Sri Lankan players started to fall sick, almost making the visiting team run out of players while fielding. Domestic matches have also been called off around this time of the year in the past.

"We've spoken to Delhi authorities in the last two days," Ganguly said at a media briefing in Kolkata on Thursday. "They are expecting the match to go through. It was already scheduled so we couldn't cancel it at the last minute. We came in on the 28th and it was too late to do anything. Because a lot of preparations go in matches - tickets, crowds, everything. So it's not possible to cancel matches in the last minute.

"I hope it goes through. But post-Diwali is a bit of a difficult time in the north because the winter comes in and [there is] a lot of smoke and dust and everything. So in the future when we schedule, especially the northern part of India in the winter, we'll have to be a little bit more practical. But fingers crossed."

Bangladesh players were seen training in a thick haze on Thursday, with batsman Liton Das wearing a mask during a fielding drill. India's Rohit Sharma said he had not had time to assess thing himself, but alluded to the 2017 Test against Sri Lanka and said it wasn't a problem for the home team.

"I have just landed and haven't had time to assess," he said at an event in Delhi. "As far as I know the game is to be played on 3rd and will be played. We didn't have any problem when we played the Test match here (against Sri Lanka). We are not aware of the exact discussion and I haven't had any problem."

KD: Draymond spat a factor in leaving Warriors

Published in Basketball
Thursday, 31 October 2019 09:55

NEW YORK -- Kevin Durant said his altercation with Draymond Green last November was one of many factors that ultimately led him to leave the Golden State Warriors for the Brooklyn Nets in free agency.

"I wish that wouldn't have happened," Durant said on Thursday.

Durant's comments came during a wide-ranging interview on ESPN's First Take, where the former NBA MVP discussed his free-agency decision, his rehab from an Achilles injury and his new teammate Kyrie Irving.

The on-court disagreement between Durant and Green happened after a loss to the LA Clippers last season. The All-Stars continued to exchange words back in the locker room, and Green ultimately was suspended for one game without pay by the Warriors.

At the time, Durant's free agency loomed over the franchise.

"Every day it was about my free agency," Durant said Thursday. "Every day was about my disposition as a player -- what I looked like on the bench, what I looked like during the games. It opened up a lot of nonsense that could've been avoided. But Draymond and I talked about it."

Green addressed the incident earlier this month during an interview with ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski on The Woj Pod. Green said his suspension caused him to question his standing with the franchise and that he started to tell himself, "Oh my god, the Warriors sided with Kevin Durant."

"I just had to accept the fact that I was wrong," Green said on the podcast. "And once I was able to get over my stubbornness and accept the fact that I was wrong, I was able to move on. I lost [Durant's] trust. How do I get that back? Not so we can win a championship or we can win some games ... but I actually loved this guy, like that's really my brother. And so not knowing what's next in our relationship bothered me more."

Durant said Thursday that both sides were motivated to "mend it fast," but each had his own process to do so.

In addition to his comments about Green, Durant doubled down on the fact that he will not be returning to the court during the 2019-20 season. The 10-time All-Star suffered a ruptured Achilles this past June during Game 5 of the NBA Finals.

Adriana Diaz features in Teen Vogue’s 21 Under 21!

Published in Table Tennis
Thursday, 31 October 2019 07:52

Triple gold medallist at the Lima 2019 Pan American Games, for the young Puerto Rican, it has been an impressive 12 months across women’s singles, doubles and team events.

Consistent winner

From the her debut on the grand stage at the 2014 World Championships, Diaz has been within touching distance of silverware – no matter the event. She won the women’s singles bronze medal at the 2014 Central American and Caribbean Games in Xalapa, as well as the silver with elder sister Melanie in the women’s doubles. The achievements combined well with the two gold medals she secured for her team and in the mixed doubles with Brian Afanador at the same tournament!

Achieving the no.3 spot in August on this year’s under 21 world ranking, her journey hit an early peak in 2016, when she succeeded at the Pan American Junior Championships in Burnaby and in the women’s singles event at the United States Open in Las Vegas.

It was a statement to the world that the Latin American athlete was a high quality act.

Currently in October 2019, ranked no.27 on the women’s list and no.15 on the under 21 women’s order, Diaz has consistently achieved. The Universal 2019 ITTF-Pan Am Cup in Guaynabo yielded yet another gold medal, shortly after she won the under 21 women’s singles title at the 2019 ITTF Challenge Spanish Open at Guadalajara.

The results have made her the highest ranked female player from Latin America at the age of 19; however, there are always disappointments. At the recent 2019 Latin America Team Qualification tournament for places in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, having beaten Brazil in the final at the Lima 2019 Pan American Games; facing the same trio of Bruna Takahashi, Caroline Kumahara and Jessica Yamada, they experienced a 3-0 defeat.

It may sound like a setback for the young Puerto Rican but remember she had just returned from the Uncle Pop Women’s World Cup and was no doubt jet-lagged; there is plenty to be optimistic about in the years ahead.

Teen (Vogue) Sensation heading to Tokyo

The year has clearly brought the Puerto Rican to the attention of the social media world, she is known to be very popular across Instagram and Twitter. Her inclusion in the Teen Vogue’s 21 Under 21 list is a direct combination of her on court performances and off-the-table influence.

As the first female from her country to qualify for the Olympic Games in Rio 2016, her targets have become multi-dimensional – with the advancement of her female colleagues through sport the primary factor.

“My biggest challenge has been placing myself among the top 30 women table tennis players in the world. Because coming from a country where table tennis isn’t a traditional sport, it becomes a greater challenge to achieve a good ranking and maintain it. If you want to achieve a goal, you have to work for it. It’s not going to happen by itself. You can’t leave it to luck. You have to work, fight, and trust yourself, no matter what.” Adriana Diaz

Confidence about the importance of determination towards your goals is the main difference seen in the athletes coming through at this stage. Diaz has made up her mind about competing at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games and could be a worthy inclusion for her country’s hopes of a podium finish.

Join us to take this opportunity to wish the young Puerto Rican an exhilarating happy birthday and follow her pursuits for more glory right here at ITTF and itTV!

If you could choose a combined XV from England and South Africa at this World Cup, you would choose all England players.

So in Saturday's final, if South Africa play exactly the same as they have done throughout the tournament, I think England can handle it.

I cannot see how South Africa's gameplan is going to work against a side who are going to match them physically.

However, there is a part of me that still thinks South Africa are going to do something a bit different. They have been lulling us in, saying they are going to do the same thing all the time.

The Springboks have got players there who can score tries and play expansively. I am not saying that is going to be enough, but England have got to be wary of that.

Head coach Eddie Jones has named an unchanged starting XV for the match, while Springboks counterpart Rassie Erasmus has got wing Cheslin Kolbe back after an ankle injury.

I think these are the six key battles that could decide the game.

Ben Youngs v Faf de Klerk

People would argue you should have scrum-half Faf de Klerk over Ben Youngs in a combined XV, but to manage the game at this level I would have Youngs all day long.

They have played each other a lot in the Premiership, with De Klerk at Sale and Youngs at Leicester, and I would not be surprised if the latter is thinking, 'why is everyone talking about this guy?'

If Youngs gets his forwards to dominate South Africa, he could make mincemeat of his opposite number.

If there is parity, then De Klerk is going to have to bring out some of his magic. He is very good at changing the tempo of the game. We have not seen the counter-attack, quick-tap penalties and quick line-out throws he is capable of yet.

De Klerk can be a superstar but he can also be a chink in the Springboks' armour. There will be more of Youngs' eye on De Klerk than the other way around and that might be to the England nine's advantage.

Billy Vunipola v Duane Vermeulen

South Africa number eight Duane Vermeulen has got 53 caps and England's Billy Vunipola has got 50 so they are as experienced as each other and both world-class.

Neither of them have absolutely smashed it this World Cup but maybe Vermeulen has the edge - Vunipola is going to have to step his game up to deal with him.

South Africa are going to compete for the ball a lot more than New Zealand did because Scott Barrett, who is usually a lock but was playing at flanker, was non-existent at the breakdown for the All Blacks.

England had flankers Tom Curry and Sam Underhill, who were over the ball constantly. Against South Africa, it is more well-matched in that area.

If either back row is dominant, that will determine the game.

Jamie George v Bongi Mbonambi

South Africa will look to put pressure on the line-outs. If they nick one or two early on, the seeds of doubt will start to grow a bit.

There will be lots of line-outs because South Africa will kick a lot and England will not be scared of kicking to touch either because they are good in that area.

You have got two top-drawer second-row partnerships who know the line-outs inside out. But which hooker has got it to nail the line-out throw under the most intense pressure?

In the middle of the scrum, with South Africa's front row you are going to be at it for 80 minutes.

When you are getting scrummaged hard every single time and getting challenged on the breakdown, then you have got to go to a line-out - that is asking a lot.

Under all that pressure, I would have England hooker Jamie George over South Africa's Bongi Mbonambi but I would not be surprised if the Springboks have George high up on their target list.

Jonny May v Cheslin Kolbe

Wing Jonny May is certainly going to get plenty of opportunities to run at Cheslin Kolbe and I think fly-half George Ford will target him in the air.

May is so good in the air you would be foolish not to pepper Kolbe a bit and see what his injury is like, whether he is fully fit.

If England choose to attack down the Springbok's wing, they will make some metres with May. But who knows whether we are actually going to see Kolbe with ball in hand against him?

So I think May wins this one because England will have more chance to tactically attack.

The benches

There are two brilliant benches but England have by far the better mix and balance of replacements.

South Africa go for six forwards and two backs. For this type of game, England have a better split of five forwards and three backs.

I think England will be in the lead and at some point South Africa are going to have to chase. That is very difficult when you have only got two backs on the bench.

If Kolbe went down early, do you put Frans Steyn - who mostly played at centre before this World Cup - on the wing?

If he does come on at centre, Steyn will not run round the outside of Jonathan Joseph or Henry Slade - no chance.

Whereas if England need to chase, they have got players who could create something from nothing.

The emotional battle

Before this World Cup, I had South Africa down as my second team because I heard the story about captain Siya Kolisi and his upbringing. It was phenomenal.

England are going to have their own emotional motivation. They have not won the World Cup for 16 years and went out at the group stage in 2015.

But maybe South Africa edge the emotional battle because of Kolisi.

HUNTERSVILLE, N.C – Joe Gibbs Racing has announced that NASCAR Xfinity Series driver Brandon Jones has signed a contract extension and will be back behind the wheel of the No. 19 Toyota in 2020.

After his second full season at JGR and fourth complete Xfinity Series season, Jones is ready to take on the senior role and keep building on his momentum from 2019 into 2020.

He made a major statement at Kansas Speedway earning his first career win in the Xfinity Series and the team feels they are poised to challenge for the 2020 Xfinity Series championship.

“I couldn’t be happier to be back and race in 2020 with Joe Gibbs Racing,” stated Brandon Jones. “I am very proud of my team and the huge strides and experience we have gained over the past two years. I am ready for this next opportunity and challenge. “

Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE Coming To Cup Series

Published in Racing
Thursday, 31 October 2019 07:13

DETROIT — Chevrolet will switch to the Camaro ZL1 1LE in the NASCAR Cup Series in 2020, replacing the Camaro ZL1, which made its series debut in 2018.

Camaro ZL1 1LE — based on the fastest, most track-capable production Camaro ever – will make its competition debut next February during Daytona Speedweeks, which opens the 2020 NASCAR season.

“The ZL1 1LE is the highest performer within the Camaro production-car lineup,” said Jim Campbell, U.S. vice president of Performance and Motorsports. “We took lessons from the production car and applied them to the new 2020 Cup car.”

Chevrolet engineers optimized aerodynamic performance by employing an array of tools, including computational fluid dynamics (CFD), simulation, and reduced-scale and full-scale wind-tunnel testing.

Camaro ZL1 1LE joins the Team Chevy family of racing Camaros already competing in NASCAR Xfinity Series; NHRA Funny Car, Pro Stock and Sportsman classes; Michelin Pilot Challenge GS Class; and Pirelli World Challenge GTS division.

The outgoing Camaro ZL1 debuted in 2018 and made an immediate impact by winning the pole for the season-opening Daytona 500. That accomplishment was followed quickly by a win in the Daytona 500 a week later.

In 2019, Camaro ZL1 has produced seven wins thus far and powered five Team Chevy drivers – Chase Elliott, Kurt Busch, Kyle Larson, Alex Bowman and William Byron – into the 2019 NASCAR playoffs.

Camaro ZL1 1LE brings a racing legacy to NASCAR. The 1LE debuted on-track and in the showroom in the late 1980s for the third-gen Camaro. Fourth- and fifth-gen Camaros also featured 1LE.

The current production Camaro ZL1 1LE – with its lighter wheels and dampers, thinner rear glass and a fixed-back rear seat – sheds more than a 50-pounds than a standard ZL1 Coupe and is powered by a 650-horsepower, supercharged LT4 engine.

Camaro ZL1 1LE builds on a winning legacy: Chevrolet has won a record 39 NASCAR manufacturer championships – including 13 consecutive titles from 2003-2015.

In addition, Chevrolet drivers have achieved a record 31 championships, including Jimmie Johnson’s seventh in 2016.

Camaro ZL1 1LE joins Camaro SS, which has been Chevrolet’s entry in the NASCAR XFINITY Series since 2013, winning 76 races, four driver’s championships and four manufacturer’s championships.

Hinchcliffe: ‘This Is Simply Our Next Fight’

Published in Racing
Thursday, 31 October 2019 07:55

INDIANAPOLIS – Popular NTT IndyCar Series star James Hinchcliffe has released his first public comments since the announcement that he would not be retained by Arrow McLaren SP for the 2020 season.

The announcement of Pato O’Ward and Oliver Askew’s signings with the team for the upcoming NTT IndyCar Series season left Hinchcliffe on the outside looking in, with limited options to try and secure another ride going into the winter months.

Two potential possibilities would be a third car at Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing or the second car at Dale Coyne Racing alongside Sebastien Bourdais.

Both Bobby Rahal and Dale Coyne told NBC Sports they have interest in Hinchcliffe, but Rahal noted that “while we would love to have James at some level, we don’t have the money at this point,” and Coyne added the he expects to re-sign Santino Ferrucci to race alongside Bourdais for next season, which would likely scuttle Hinchcliffe moving to DCR.

Hinchcliffe was quick to point out his surprise at losing his ride for next season, but vowed to fight back in hopes of still securing a place on the Indy car grid.

“It goes without saying that the happenings of the last 48 hours have been difficult. We were shocked to learn that we would not be in the No. 5 car for the 2020 season,” Hinchcliffe noted. “Obviously it’s very late in the game, but my team is working flat out to try and salvage a full 2020 IndyCar campaign.

“The support of the motorsports community has been overwhelming and is endlessly appreciated. We only get to do what we do because of the fans, and your passion is amazing,” Hinchcliffe added. “Disappointment aside, I still have my health, incredible family, friends and fans supporting me, and at the end of the day there’s not there’s not much a little maple syrup and a Leafs game can’t fix.

“We’ve been kicked down before and came back stronger. This is simply our next fight.”

Hinchcliffe remains under contract to Arrow McLaren SP, but is free to pursue other driving options for 2020.

This isn’t the first time that Hinchcliffe has had to battle back from adversity. In 2015, he nearly lost his life in a practice crash at Indianapolis Motor Speedway during preparations for the Indianapolis 500, sustaining serious injuries that required nearly a year of recovery.

Hinchcliffe came back to earn the Indianapolis 500 pole position the next season.

The 32-year-old Canadian failed to qualify for The Greatest Spectacle in Racing in 2018, but rebounded to win at Iowa Speedway later in the year.

Hinchcliffe finished a disappointing 12th in the standings this year, with only a single podium finish to his credit and eight finishes outside the top 10 in 17 races.

2019's best athlete Halloween costumes

Published in Hockey
Wednesday, 30 October 2019 12:20

Athletes are seriously bringing it for Halloween 2019. Some are doing traditional monster costumes. Others are looking to movies for inspiration, showing off as superheroes, villains or memorable comedic roles. A surprising number are dressing up as other athletes entirely. One thing's for certain: These costumes would be contenders at even the most competitive Halloween costume contest. We've got a collection of the best of the best if you're looking for some last-minute costume inspiration. First, DeAndre Hopkins nailed it as Aladdin:

Then Olympic gold-winning skier Lindsey Vonn set the bar for inside jokes, jabbing back at Philadelphia Flyers mascot Gritty. During an October game against the New Jersey Devils, Gritty had held up a sign that said "Lindsey Could Do Better" with arrows pointing at himself as her fiancé, defensemen P.K. Subban warmed up in front of him.

But Vonn and Subban got the last laugh this week:

But those aren't the only costumes that have been top-notch. Here's the best we've seen:

Defending champ Schauffele not slowed by flu at WGC-HSBC

Published in Golf
Thursday, 31 October 2019 02:57

Xander Schauffele isn't letting illness slow down his title defense at the WGC-HSBC Champions.

Schauffele outlasted Tony Finau in a playoff to win last year in Shanghai, and last week he tied for 10th at the Zozo Championship. But the days in between starts did not go well for the four-time PGA Tour champ, who arrived in China while battling the flu.

"You hear from my voice, I'm a little out of it," Schauffele told reporters. "I didn't play in the pro-am. I didn't play any practice round."

That lack of practice didn't affect Schauffele in the opening round, where he shot a 6-under 66 to move into a tie for third, two shots behind leader Haotong Li. His round included nine birdies, highlighted by a stretch of six birdies in eight holes on his outward nine.

Schauffele told reporters his goal for the day was simply to "hit it anywhere on the green" in order to get his round underway, but his opener became another example of beware the injured (or ill) golfer.

"Maybe I should just keep my flu going, and if I can rattle off a 66 every day, I think that would be enough," he said. "I think a couple more nights of sleep, I'll be in better shape. But it was a dream start with what things were looking like."
