Wales bid to join England in World Cup final

Published in Rugby
Saturday, 26 October 2019 04:35

Wales stand on the brink of history as they prepare to face South Africa in Yokohama on Sunday, bidding to reach their first World Cup final with old rivals England lying in wait.

This will be Wales' third semi-final and the second under head coach Warren Gatland, who will step down at the end of the tournament.

That will bring to an end a glittering 12-year tenure which has yielded four Six Nations titles - including three Grand Slams - and a first stint as the world's number one-ranked side.

This is also likely to be a final World Cup for some Wales players such as captain Alun Wyn Jones, an inspirational leader who will join Italy's Sergio Parisse as the second-most capped international of all time with 142 appearances, including nine for the British and Irish Lions.

Wales have been building up to this moment for years and, with many believing this is their best chance yet to win a World Cup, Gatland is urging his players to seize the moment.

"I have got two games to go as the Wales coach and I want to enjoy these last two games, and there are probably nine or 10 players who won't be involved in another World Cup as well so they have got to relish that opportunity and be excited about this," he said.

"You have got a chance to do something special in your life and these chances come along very rarely and you have got to grab them with both hands.

"When you want something bad enough and you really, really want it then it can happen.

"We have a group of players that really want to do a good performance on Sunday and hopefully get to the World Cup final."

Standing in Wales' way are a resurgent South Africa side, who pummelled their way past hosts Japan in the quarter-final.

Having slipped down the rankings in recent years, the two-time world champions seem to be on their way to reviving past glories since Rassie Erasmus was appointed head coach in 2018.

The former Munster boss has the enormous Springboks forwards back to their muscular best, while the likes of scrum-half Faf de Klerk and wing Cheslin Kolbe have provided the stardust to help their side claim notable results such as last year's series win over England and a draw in New Zealand during this summer's Rugby Championship.

South Africa will be without the electric Kolbe against Wales because of an ankle injury, which Erasmus admits is a "big blow".

S'busiso Nkosi takes his place in the Springboks' only change from the victory over Japan.

Wales have multiple injury woes of their own, with full-back Liam Williams and back-rower Josh Navidi ruled out for the rest of the tournament with ankle and hamstring injuries respectively.

Leigh Halfpenny replaces Williams and Ross Moriarty comes in for Navidi, while centre Jonathan Davies returns having missed the quarter-final win over France with a knee problem.

The teams

Wales: Halfpenny; North, J Davies, Parkes, Adams; Biggar, G Davies; Wyn Jones, Owens, Francis, Ball, Alun Wyn Jones (capt), Wainwright, Tipuric, Moriarty.

Replacements: Dee, R Carre, D Lewis, Beard, Shingler, T Williams, Patchell, Watkin.

South Africa: Le Roux; Nkosi, Am, De Allende, Mapimpi; Pollard, De Klerk; Mtawarira, Mbonambi, Malherbe, Etzebeth, De Jager, Kolisi (capt), Du Toit, Vermeulen.

Replacements: Marx, Kitschoff, Koch, Snyman, Mostert, Louw, H Jantjies, Steyn.

Officials: Referee, Jerome Garces (France); Assistant referees, Wayne Barnes (England), Ben O'Keefe (New Zealand); TMO Ben Skeen (New Zealand).

What they said

Wales head coach Warren Gatland: "If we can make the World Cup final with the playing numbers we have got, it would be one hell of an achievement.

"It's one step at a time. We have got a challenge on our hands on Sunday against a side that has been improving.

"I think they have definitely improved under Rassie in terms of going back to some of the things they are good at, their strengths.

"I am excited about it. I'm more looking forward to this game than I was last week, and more confident about this game than we probably were against France."

South Africa head coach Rassie Erasmus: "I think we have been under pressure to redeem ourselves for the last couple of years. We've been number five, six and seven in the world over the last three or four years and we've had some proper hidings against almost every team since 2015.

"We've lost to Italy, we've lost to Japan, we've been beaten by 57 points, 39-3 by Ireland. Some people have lost a lot of faith in us at different stages.

"We've got a different challenge which is to get respect back and so people start believing in us again. That was the pressure for us.

"Now we're at the stage where we want to be number one in the world again. Now there is internal pressure and expectation and that's different."

The ground

International Stadium Yokohama is a 72,327-capacity ground which will host both Rugby World Cup semi-finals and the final.

It opened in 1998 and hosted football's 2002 World Cup final, in which Brazil beat Germany 2-0.

The ground has also staged several Fifa Club World Cups as well as rugby Test matches including last year's 37-20 win for New Zealand over Australia.

Match stats

• Wales have won each of their past four test encounters with South Africa, after winning only two of their first 31 against them.

• South Africa's most recent victory over Wales came in the quarter-finals at the 2015 World Cup. The Boks won the game on a 75th-minute Fourie du Preez try.

• South Africa won each of the previous two World Cup meetings between these countries, 17-16 in the pool phase at 2011 and 23-19 in the 2015 quarter-finals.

• South Africa and New Zealand are the only World Cup opponents Wales have only lost against.

• Following their quarter-final win over France, Wales were the only team in the World Cup who have won five matches.

• The only player to feature in all four recent Wales victories over South Africa is Cory Hill, who dropped out of this World Cup squad injured.

• Pieter-Steph du Toit, Steven Kitshoff and Elton Jantjies are the only Springboks to feature in all four recent defeats by Wales.

• No team in World Cup history has lost a match in a tournament and then gone on to win it. South Africa lost their opening fixture against New Zealand.

Tifft Out Of Hospital, Crafton To Race Sunday

Published in Racing
Saturday, 26 October 2019 11:00

MARTINSVILLE, Va. – Front Row Motorsports confirmed Saturday afternoon that driver Matt Tifft has been released from a local hospital after suffering a “medical condition” at Martinsville Speedway.

Tifft, 23, was transported from the infield care center to a local hospital roughly half an hour before the scheduled start of opening practice Saturday morning.

He was replaced by NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series driver Matt Crafton for both practice sessions, and Front Row Motorsports general manager Jerry Freeze confirmed to FOX Sports that Crafton will continue in the interim driver role for both qualifying and Sunday’s First Data 500 at the .526-mile Virginia short track.

A team statement released as the NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series race was beginning Saturday afternoon noted that Tifft had been released from hospital care.

“This morning, Matt Tifft was transported to a local hospital in Martinsville, Va., for further evaluations and tests after suffering a medical condition at the track,” the statement read. “Tifft was evaluated and released from the hospital and is returning home. Further updates will be sent when appropriate.”

Tifft is in the midst of his rookie season in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series and has one top-10 finish in 31 starts this year, a ninth-place finish at Daytona (Fla.) Int’l Speedway in July.

He underwent brain surgery in July of 2016 to remove a low-grade glioma tumor.

Aghakhani Stars During Lamborghini World Final

Published in Racing
Saturday, 26 October 2019 12:48

JEREZ, Spain – The action on the track at day one of the Lamborghini World Final was hotter than the temperatures that greeted the teams and drivers that reached almost 90 degrees.

When the pair of 50-minute races were over, a 16-year-old from Lamborghini Super Trofeo North America was halfway to becoming one of the youngest world champions in the series history while other cars from the series positioned themselves to also bring home a world title after Sunday’s action.

The first race of the day combined the AM and LB Cup teams from all three series, including North America, Europe and Asia.

Steve Aghakhani took the overall and AM class win in the first race and is now in a position to earn the title of youngest world champion in Lamborghini history. He has now won all three races he has run this weekend.

“It is a crazy feeling to think that,” the teenager said after the race. “I am excited to be out here and there are some good drivers out here that make each of these races challenging. It was a little hard trying to keep the tires safe (in the heat), but we were able to do that and come away with another win.”

Supercross champion Chad Reed earned the LB Class win. The native of Australia is in his first season of Super Trofeo and this was his sixth win of the year. He drove on his own after sharing a car with Justin Price in the last two races of the North American series on Friday.

“I’m trying to be a Lamborghini champion,” Reed said after his win. “It was fun out there, and that was the first race I have driven by myself. It was hard to find a rhythm today, but the other guys on the track had to do the same. So it was a good time today and we will see what happens tomorrow.”

McKay Snow finished second overall and in the Am class while Cameron Cassels was fourth in class.

The North American champion in the LB Cup – Mel Johnson – finished second in that class race with his teammate Thomas Lovelady.

Saturday’s second race featured the Pro and Pro AM class competitors. Sandy Mitchell and Andrea Amici finished a close second in the Pro race. Conor Daly and Brandon Gdovic in the No. 146, Precision Performance, Lamborghini Palm Beach entry was third.

Mitchell made a valiant effort to catch Europe’s Jonathan Cecotto at the end and crossed the line only .137 of a second behind the winner.

“That was one of the best battles I’ve had yet,” Mitchell said following the race. “We had a fantastic race finishing second and a great battle with the leading car. Plenty of door handle to door handle action. We looked like we were fast, so I am confident we can do well tomorrow. Starting on P2 tomorrow and ahead of our rivals. I think we are standing in good shape for tomorrow, and I’m looking forward to it.”

Damon Ockey and Jacob Edison, the North American Pro Am champions, finished second in class. Eidson drove the second stint and closed the gap, which was over 10 seconds at one point, to less than four seconds at the end on the eventual class winners – the No. 6 Imperiale Racing entry from Europe.

Rea Reigns Supreme In World Superbike Finale

Published in Racing
Saturday, 26 October 2019 13:14

LUSAIL, Qatar – Jonathan Rea put a bow on another World Superbike championship season by winning the season finale Saturday at Qatar’s Losail Int’l Circuit.

The victory, Rea’s his 17th total victory between superpole and regular races, was far from easy as he had to battle with Ducati rider Alvaro Bautista for the honor of standing at the top of the podium to wrap up the season.

Bautista led the field into turn one, but he ran wide and opened the door for Rea to snatch the lead away after the opening corner. Rea and Bautista found themselves knee deep in a battle for the lead, but Rea continued to lead the way.

By lap four the battle for the lead had settled down with Rea in the lead and Bautista trying to stay in the hunt. Behind them, Chaz Davies was now running third and closing on the lead duo. Michael van der Mark and Alex Lowes were fourth and fifth, respectively.

Bautista tried to steal the lead away from Rea with 13 laps left, but run wide in turn one and again allowed Rea to take the lead back. Bautista tried again two laps later, but Rea continued to hold the race lead.

With Rea and Bautista swapping the lead, Davies was suddenly right behind the leaders and in the hunt. Bautista, meanwhile, finally made a move stick and took the lead briefly in turn one. Rea returned the favor a few turns later, regaining the lead as Davies got ever closer.

Now back in the lead, Rea set about distancing himself from the Ducati pair of Bautista and Davies. He was aided by Bautista and Davies battling for second, with Davies emerging with the position with four laps left after slipping by Bautista in turn 15.

That proved to be the final pass for position in the top-three, with Rea holding serve to claim the victory in the season finale for World Superbike. Davies and Bautista completed the podium for Ducati behind the Kawasaki rider.

Behind the podium trio, Lowes crossed the line in fourth for Yamaha while Toprak Razgatlioglu finished fifth for Turkish Puccetti Racing.

R&A to build first ever women's changing facilities

Published in Golf
Saturday, 26 October 2019 08:59

The Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews is planning to add new women's changing facilities for the first time, according to BBC Sports.

This comes five years after a historic and overwhelming vote in 2014 allowed women to become members for the first time in the club's 260-year history. According to the BBC Sports report, women were not allowed to change in the clubhouse, instead using the Forgan House, just off the 18th green at St. Andrews.

The construction of the new facilities are part of a wider refurbishment, and will take "several years to complete."

"We are in the early stages of planning upgrades, including the installation of women's changing rooms," the R&A told BBC Sports. "We are consulting with members on the proposed changes before we finalize our plans. There is no firm timetable at this stage but it will be a phased program which will take several years to complete."

Sources: Saints plan to start Brees vs. Cardinals

Published in Breaking News
Saturday, 26 October 2019 13:24

Barring an unforeseen setback, the New Orleans Saints plan to start Drew Brees at quarterback Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals, sources said.

Brees has been out since Sept. 15, when he suffered a torn ligament in the thumb on his passing hand as he made contact with the outstretched hand of Los Angeles Rams defensive lineman Aaron Donald. Dr. Steven Shin performed surgery on the thumb the following week in Los Angeles, and the expectation was that Brees would miss about six weeks.

The Saints had the option of letting Teddy Bridgewater make another start before the Week 9 bye. The Saints are undefeated in Bridgewater's five starts this season. But in a decision that reflects how much NFL coaches value every game and make no assumptions, the plan is for Brees to start.

"We have a good team," a source said. "No. 9 [Brees] makes us better."

Accuracy and ball security would be the most significant concerns with Brees, who returned to practice this week with the expectation of playing. The emphasis will be on Brees getting the ball out quickly and trusting an offensive line that has proved to be among the best in the NFL.

The decision is not without risk. Arizona's Chandler Jones and Terrell Suggs have combined for 13.5 sacks, eight strip sacks and 14 quarterback hits this season.

Not only that, but Arizona leads the league with 15 forced fumbles. The Cardinals have forced multiple fumbles in five games

Brees, who did not appear to have any limitations on what he was able to do during the portions of practice that were open to the media this week, said on Wednesday that he just wanted to make sure that he was as comfortable, confident and accurate as he needs to be.

He said the decision would come down to "just making sure I can be me."

When Brees was asked if there is any greater risk of reinjury now than there would be two weeks from now, he seemed to suggest that is not a factor in the decision.

"I mean, listen, it's not fully healed I think until three months. But that internal brace obviously provides some stability and support, as does the splint," Brees said of both an internal brace that was installed when he had surgery to repair the torn ulnar collateral ligament on Sept. 18 and an external splint that he is likely to wear when he returns.

Meanwhile, Saints running back Alvin Kamara's status remains questionable after he practiced on a limited basis both Thursday and Friday with knee and ankle injuries.

ESPN's Mike Triplett contributed to this report.

Pelicans' Holiday out vs. Rockets with knee injury

Published in Basketball
Saturday, 26 October 2019 12:10

New Orleans Pelicans guard Jrue Holiday will miss Saturday's game against the Houston Rockets with a left knee sprain and should be day-to-day in his recovery, multiple sources told ESPN.

Holiday injured the knee on a drive with 5:18 left in the third quarter in Friday's loss to the Dallas Mavericks.

Holiday's ankle turned as he was fouled and his knee was injured in the process. He made both free throws and played the rest of the game.

Sources told ESPN that the Pelicans had an MRI done on Holiday's knee Friday night and it revealed no structural damage.

It was a relief for New Orleans, which is already without No. 1 pick Zion Williamson for six to eight weeks because of a torn meniscus.

Holiday has struggled from the floor in the first two games. He's averaging 10.5 points and 7.0 assists, but he's 8-of-26 from the floor and 1-of-9 from deep.

Holiday is spending a lot of his energy on the defensive end of the floor.

According to ESPN Stats and Information, Holiday, a first-team All-Defensive team selection in 2017-18 and a second-team honoree last season, is holding opponents to a 37.9 shooting percentage (11-of-29).

In the opener against Toronto, Holiday held Pascal Siakam to 0-of-5 shooting when he was the primary defender, and he held Luka Doncic to 3-of-9 shooting on Friday.

After playing at Houston on Saturday, the Pelicans host the Golden State Warriors on Monday night.

Top seed Roger Federer continued his quest for a 10th Swiss Indoors title with a 6-4 6-4 semi-final victory against Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece.

Federer, 38, has won his home title in four of the last five years.

In his 16th Basel semi-final, the world number three saw off seventh-ranked Tsitsipas, 21, in one hour, 18 minutes.

He faces 20-year-old Australian Alex de Minaur in Sunday's final, after he beat USA's Reilly Opelka 7-6 (7-2) 6-7 (4-7) 7-6 (7-3) in two hours, 33 minutes.

World number 28 De Minaur maintained his 100% record against the 6ft 11 American 22-year-old with his fourth victory against him this year.

Seven of the 10 sets they have contested have gone to tie-breaks.

Since his surprise defeat to Tsitsipas at the Australian Open in January, Federer has beaten Tsitsipas in their last two matches.

Whilst he conceded only six games in his two previous wins in the event and received a walkover in the semi-finals following an injury to Stan Wawrinka, Tsitsipas had contested two tie-breaks and his last two matches both went to a deciding set.

A single break was enough to give Federer the first set and he made an immediate break at the start of the next in building a 2-0 advantage.

Tsitsipas had a point to level at 5-5 but Federer soon secured his 50th victory of the season with a typically assured serve and volley.

The 20-time Grand Slam singles champion has won titles in Halle, Miami and Dubai this year.

Repeat success, surprise winners, the clock ticks down

Published in Table Tennis
Saturday, 26 October 2019 09:09

Poland’s Rafal Czuper and the host nation’s Cao Ningning, alongside colleagues Xue Juan, Zhang Bian and Mao Jingdian emerged the players to successfully defend the titles won the previous year in Beijing.

Rafal Czuper beat Russia’s Rasul Nazirov (11-6, 11-6, 13-11) to claim the men’s singles class 1-2 title; similarly, Cao Ningning the leading name on duty in men’s singles class 5, secured gold at the final expense of Great Britain’s Jack Hunter-Spivey, the no.2 seed (11-8, 11-5, 4-11, 11-8).

“I’m really happy with the way I played out here and really pleased to navigate my way through to the final beating some good players on the way. This was a big competition for me in terms of qualification for Tokyo and feel I handled the pressure well. It was a great end to the year.” Jack Hunter-Spivey

Likewise in the women’s singles events Xue Juan beat colleague, Li Qian (11-6, 14-12, 7-11, 11-8) to retain the class 3 title, Zhang Bian overcame Korea Republic’s Kang Oejeong (11-6, 11-2, 11-8) to emerge the class 5 champion; not to be outdone Mao Jingdian prevailed in class 8. Similarly, in an all Chinese final, she accounted for Huang Wenjuan (11-6, 11-1, 11-7).

Surprise winners

In each instance it was success for the top seeded player but as play progressed there were upsets.

Notably, in the women’s singles competition, in class 1-2 organised on a group basis, China’s Liu Jing finished in first place ahead of Brazil’s Catia Oliveira and Korea Republic’s Seo Suyeon, the top seed. Similarly, in class 4, Gu Xiaodan secured gold at the final expense of colleague and defending champion, Zhou Ying (17-15, 11-9, 9-11, 8-11, 11-8).

Following suit, in class 6, Poland’s Katarzyna Marszal, the no.2 seed, after accounting for Great Britain’s Felicity Pickard (11-9, 11-5, 12-10), overcame Iraq’s Naijah Imad Lafta Al-Dayyeni (11-5, 11-13, 11-9, 11-4) to secure the top prize. Similarly, there was a surprise outcome in class 11, like class 1-2 organised on a group basis, Sayuri Mio finished ahead of compatriot Maki Ito, the top seed.

Unexpected success

Meanwhile, in the men’s singles competition, China’s Chen Chao, Liao Keli, Zhao Yi Qing and Poland’s Igor Misztal, alongside Japan’s Koya Kato emerged surprise winners.

Chen Chao won class 6 beating defending champion, Germany’s Thomas Rau in the final (7-11, 10-12, 11-8, 11-7, 11-9), Liao Keli emerged the class 7 champion at the final expense of compatriot Yan Shuo (12-10, 5-11, 11-9, 11-4). In a similar vein Zhao Yi Qing, the no.2 seed, reserved the top prize in class 9; he accounted for Great Britain’s Ashley Facey-Thompson in the final (11-9, 11-6, 9-11, 7-11, 11-8), the semi-final winner in opposition to Japan’s Koyo Iwabuchi (11-5, 8-11, 6-11, 13-11, 11-5).

“I had to dig deep against Koyo. It was a good match but I had the upper hand in the end and managed to win. I started slowly in the final but I kept a cool head and managed to get back into the match but my opponent played well. Overall I’m happy with silver.” Ashley Facey-Thompson

Top spot against the odds for Zhao Yi Qing, it was the same for Igor Misztal in class 10 and Koya Kato in class 11. Not seeded Igor Misztal accounted for China’s Lian Hao, the top seed and defending champion (11-9, 12-10, 11-8), before overcoming the Czech Republic’s Ivan Karabec, the no.2 seed (11-7, 9-11, 8-11, 11-4, 11-6) to seal the title. Impressive from Igor Misztal, it was the same from Koya Kato, the no.2 seed, he overcame Korea Republic’s Kim Gitae (11-8, 11-8, 11-8) to emerge victorious.

Top seeds prevail

Meanwhile, in the remaining competitions it was success for the top seeds. In the men’s events, China’s Feng Panfeng secured gold in class 3, Frenchman Maxime Thomas in class 4, Zhao Shuai also from China in class 8.

Similarly in the women’s singles events, China’s Wang Rui prevailed in class 7, colleague Xiong Guiyan succeeded in class 9, Brazil’s Bruna Alexandre emerged the class 10 champion.

Attention now turns to the team events, play concludes in Huangzhou on Monday 28th October.

Gray Hopes ‘Discipline’ Leads To Strong Truck Debut

Published in Racing
Saturday, 26 October 2019 09:00

MARTINSVILLE, Va. – He may be a new face when it comes to the NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series, but Tanner Gray was a quick study during Friday’s practice rounds at Martinsville Speedway.

Gray, the outgoing NHRA Pro Stock champion, is making his Truck Series debut this weekend at the .526-mile paper clip and already has one of the likely keys to Martinsville success figured out, even if he hasn’t quite mastered the skill just yet.

“This place is really hard; it’s not easy at all. In fact it’s probably one of the more technical places I’ve been,” Gray told SPEED SPORT. “It seems to be super line sensitive and just takes a lot of discipline to run well. So, that’s something I’m still working on and that I need to get better at.

“For the most part, I think we’ve been okay. Even there in the last practice, I think we could be a little bit better, but we’ll just keep working at it and see how good we can get it. We were obviously quite a ways off Todd (Gilliland) and whatnot, but the realistic goal has been to come here and run top 12, and I think we can do that.

“We just have to get it a little bit better and I need to do a little bit better job of staying disciplined.”

Gray is no stranger to racing, having grown up as the grandson of noted NHRA Funny Car driver Johnny Gray and the son of NHRA Pro Stock driver Shane Gray, but as he put it, “circle-track racing was always where I wanted to be.

“Even when I was a kid and people would ask me at drag races if that was what I would do later on, I always told them, ‘I plan on going NASCAR racing.’ It took a little bit to get there, but hey, we’re here now.”

Somewhat jokingly, several people on social media have called the Martinsville track a good launching point for Gray’s NASCAR national series career, as it’s in essence “two drag strips and two U-turns.”

Gray rebutted that it’s far from that simple, however, adding that he’s spent a lot of time in preparation for this event and wants to be as successful as he can be at the end of the day.

“We got to test here (at Martinsville) once before this, and got a little bit of time on the simulator, so that definitely helped a ton,” Gray explained. “It’s always different when you show back up though, compared to being on the simulator. It’s not quite the same.

“I think it took me a minute to get back going again, so I need to do a little better job of adapting and picking it up faster.”

Tanner Gray looks on at Martinsville Speedway. (Jacob Seelman photo)

Gray picked things up fast enough to be fastest – briefly – in final practice before his time was later supplanted, but it was a fleeting moment of confidence for the 20-year-old.

“I actually saw it (on the scoreboard), but I knew it wouldn’t last,” Gray admitted. “Even at that point, we weren’t very good on that mock run. We actually came in and did another one. But yeah, I guess it’s cool for a minute to come and see your name up there, but I knew at the end of day it wasn’t going to stick. I was just focused on getting a little bit better.

“I’m excited, and I think we’ll be fast. Hopefully we can keep making it a little bit better and I can go out there and make some noise.”

Though he’s been on the national stage since he first broke into the NHRA drag racing ranks at 17, Gray admitted that he’s still got butterflies going into his first NASCAR race at the top levels of the sport.

“I’m definitely feeling a lot of nerves, for sure,” Gray said. “I wasn’t sure if I was even really ready to run this race or ready to make the step up. So it’s been lot of nerves to say the least, but I’m excited too. After getting the first practice sessions out of the way and kind of seeing where everything shook out, you know, I’m feeling good about what we have. I think I can be a little bit better than where we ended the day on Friday, and I think we can leave here with a really good run, as long as I go out and do my job.

“Everybody from DGR-Crosley has brought a really fast truck, and they prepare their stuff really, really well. So if I can go out there and do what I believe I can and stay out of trouble, then we’ll be all right.”
