ST. LOUIS, Mo. — Arizona Sport Shirts has signed on to become the title sponsor of the Gateway Dirt Nationals.
The event, held inside the Dome at America’s Center and features dirt late models, modifieds and midgets, will be known as the Arizona Sport Shirts Gateway Dirt Nationals presented by O’Reilly Auto Parts.
Arizona Sports Shirts has signed a three-year agreement to serve as the event’s title sponsor.
“I am very proud because I have had such a long working relationship with both of these companies and brands and the fact that they have taken on a bigger role I think says a lot about our relationship and our commitment to each other in the sport of dirt track racing,” said Cody Sommer, the event’s promoter. “Any time you have partners grow year after year with you it says a lot about what you are doing for them and what value they see in what you are doing, so that makes this extra special.”
The fourth annual Arizona Sport Shirts Gateway Dirt Nationals presented by O’Reilly Auto Parts takes place Dec. 19-21 inside the Dome at America’s Center.
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – NASCAR officials have declined to penalize NASCAR Xfinity Series drivers Cole Custer and Tyler Reddick for a pit lane scuffle after Saturday’s event at Kansas Speedway.
Custer and Reddick were upset with one another following on-track contact while the two were racing for the lead. The two voiced their displeasure with one another on pit road after the race, leading to the scuffle that also involved members of both crews.
No one involved in the scuffle, including Reddick, Custer or either of their crews, were penalized as a result of the incident. Reddick finished second in the race while Custer crossed the line in 11th.

The only penalty handed down by NASCAR following the weekend at Kansas Speedway was a lug nut. Chris Gayle, crew chief of Erik Jones in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series, was fined $10,000 because the No. 20 Toyota had one unsecured lug nut.
DETROIT -- A person familiar with the decision says the Detroit Red Wings have put defenseman Jonathan Ericsson on waivers.
The person spoke on condition of anonymity Tuesday because the Red Wings have not announced the move. The team did announce that Ericsson had been removed from injured reserve.
Detroit also recalled forward Evgeny Svechnikov from Grand Rapids of the AHL and assigned defenseman Alex Biega to Grand Rapids. The Red Wings put forward Adam Erne on injured reserve, retroactive to Friday.
Ericsson, 35, has played over a decade with the Red Wings. He had three goals and two assists in 52 games last season.
For his career, Ericsson has 27 goals and 98 assists in 662 games.
MANCHESTER, England -- Raheem Sterling scored a second-half hat-trick as Manchester City came from behind to thrash Atalanta 5-1 at the Etihad Stadium on a night that saw teenager Phil Foden was sent off. The Italian side went ahead thanks to Ruslan Malinovskyi's penalty before Sterling and Sergio Aguero shared five goals to put Pep Guardiola's side on the verge of qualification from the Champions League group.
Aguero equalised from close range after 34 minutes and added a penalty four minutes later to give City a narrow half-time lead. The home side dominated after the break and Sterling scored three times in the space of 11 minutes to ensure City -- who had Foden sent off seven minutes from time after picking up two yellow cards -- are one win away from sealing qualification from Group C.
The biggest compliment you can pay Foden is that in a team that also boasted Aguero, Sterling and Kevin De Bruyne, he didn't look out of place. The 19-year-old buzzed around Atalanta's penalty area, creating one chance for Aguero with a clever swivel around Andrea Masiello and showing quick feet under pressure to flick the ball to Sterling for City's third goal. Foden was given a rare chance and he took it. It wasn't a performance that should be remembered only for a soft red card.
With Aymeric Laporte ruled out until the new year with a knee injury, Guardiola is already running low on centre-halves so it doesn't help when his back-up options also pick up injuries. Rodri was signed in the summer as a holding midfielder but was pressed into action in the centre of defence at Crystal Palace at the weekend. He started there again on Tuesday, but lasted just 40 minutes before limping off with a hamstring problem. John Stones and Nicolas Otamendi have at least returned to fitness drills, which could mean moving back into midfield for Aston Villa's visit on Saturday.
Pep Guardiola, 7: The City boss said he had done his homework on Atalanta instead of watching Liverpool's draw with Manchester United on Sunday and it paid off. He was happy for the visitors, third in Serie A, to stream forward so his side could hit them on the break. The plan worked perfectly and his team are all but into the knockout rounds.
GK Ederson, 6 -- Misjudged an early punt into the box but otherwise had very little to do as City took control.
DF Kyle Walker, 6 -- Back in the team after missing the win at Crystal Palace. Atalanta had joy down City's right early on and Walker was left exposed twice.
DF Benjamin Mendy, 7 -- Booked early on for a lunge at Josip Ilicic. Did well to force Timothy Castagne to head over with the goal gaping.
DF Fernandinho, 7 -- Gave away the penalty after being squared up in the corner of the box before a clumsy challenge on Ilicic.
DF Rodri, 6 -- Started at centre-back for the second game in a row. Given licence to push into midfield but was forced off at the end of the first half after suffering a hamstring strain.
MF Ilkay Gundogan, 7 -- Asked to play at the deepest midfielder. Beautifully-weighted pass split Atalanta's defence for Sterling to score the fourth.
MF Kevin De Bruyne, 7 -- Quiet night by his high standards but still played a key role in the third by racing onto Mahrez's pass and cutting inside Berat Djimsiti.
MF Riyad Mahrez, 7 -- Ducked inside off the right touchline to fire a pinpoint pass down the channel for Kevin De Bruyne in the build up to City's third and made the fifth for Sterling.
MF Phil Foden, 7 -- Making his second start of the season, he showed wonderful control to skip past Masiello and create a chance for Sergio Aguero. Sent off late on after picking up a second booking.
MF Raheem Sterling, 9 -- Clever clipped cross with his right foot for Aguero to score the equaliser, won the penalty with a driving run into the area all before scoring three himself.
FW Sergio Aguero, 8 -- Was a fingertip save away from giving City the lead before getting on the end of Sterling's cross to get the equaliser. Got a second from the penalty spot.
DF John Stones (for Rodri, 41), 6 -- A spectator in the second half.
DF Nicolas Otamendi (for Kevin De Bruyne, 67), 6 -- Picked up a booking.
DF Joao Cancelo (for Benjamin Mendy, 72), N/R -- Not on the pitch long enough to make an impact.
One day after a rattled Sam Darnold unwittingly told a national television audience he was "seeing ghosts" on the field, the New York Jets were seeing red.
The Jets were angry their quarterback's mic'd up comment was aired on ESPN's Monday Night Football.
"It bothers me, it bothers the organization," coach Adam Gase said Tuesday, 12 hours after a 33-0 loss to the New England Patriots. Gase acknowledged it's "part of the deal," coaches and players being mic'd for prime-time games, but he added: "Obviously, you never anticipate something like that happening. The fact that it did, it gives us pause to really cooperate anymore because I don't know how we can allow our franchise quarterback to be put out there like that."
Darnold played his worst game as a pro, committing five turnovers. In the second quarter, after his third turnover, he went to the sideline and said, "I'm seeing ghosts." The clip instantly went viral.
Essentially, Darnold admitted he was befuddled by the Patriots' defense -- an embarrassing moment, to be sure. He handled it well after the game, telling reporters he always tries to be honest with his coaches and that he needed to "see the field a lot better" against New England's blitz-heavy defense.
NFL Films determines which audio clips from mic'd up players are used on the air. The teams expect NFL Films to act as a gatekeeper, counting on its producer to disregard in-game comments that might cast teams and players in an unflattering light.
NFL Films had a representative at MetLife Stadium and cleared Darnold's "ghosts" remark for TV.
Neither the NFL nor ESPN, which has the freedom to decide which clips to use, had immediate comment on the matter.
Jets running back Le'Veon Bell rushed to Darnold's defense, writing on his official Twitter account that "the NFL screwed Sammy over."
The NFL screwed Sammy over...there's not one player in the NFL who's cool with having every sideline convo broadcasted to millions...there's a reason we've never heard other QB's frustrated on the sideline like that before...that's crazy, @NFL did Sam dirty as hell https://t.co/2XmYXNTNoL
— Le'Veon Bell (@LeVeonBell) October 22, 2019
The Jets were furious after the game. The Patriots, too, seemed stunned that Darnold's remark was allowed to air. Linebacker Kyle Van Noy asked reporters, "He really said that?"
Darnold was out of sync the entire game, throwing an interception on his first pass. He completed only 11 of 32 passes for 86 yards, including four interceptions. His passer rating was only 3.6, one of the worst in franchise history.
Gase said he expects Darnold to rebound. The coach saved his anger for NFL Films, although he didn't identify them.
"We'll be looking into that pretty hard," Gase said. "That's one of those things that I was really disappointed to hear about after the game. I don't know if I've ever seen that, where somebody that was mic'd up was basically ... a comment like that was allowed to air."
The Detroit Pistons will be without Blake Griffin until at least early November due to continued soreness in his knee and hamstring.
Griffin did not travel to Indiana for Detroit's season opener against the Pacers on Wednesday, with the team saying he will continue treatment and conditioning "for left hamstring and posterior knee soreness."
The Pistons say he will be re-evaluated the first week of November.
Detroit has five games in October.
Griffin, a six-time All-Star, appeared in 75 games last season for Detroit, his most 2013-14. He averaged a career-high 25.5 points to go with 7.5 rebounds.
The veteran forward played in Detroit's first two preseason games, then missed its remaining three. He did participate in part of Monday's practice.
"Still sore, day to day," coach Dwane Casey told reporters Monday. "We're going to be conservative. Whatever his body says."
EL SEGUNDO, Calif. -- There will be plenty of connections on the court when the Los Angeles Lakers face the LA Clippers on opening night Tuesday.
Clippers assistant coach Tyronn Lue, who used to coach LeBron James with the Cleveland Cavaliers, walked away from an offer to coach the Lakers this summer.
Lakers coach Frank Vogel used to have Clippers forward Paul George on his team with the Indiana Pacers.
Clippers guard Patrick Beverley was once cut by the Miami Heat when James was on the team.
Yet the talk after shootaround Tuesday focused on a pursuit that failed to connect -- James and the Lakers' attempt to land Kawhi Leonard in free agency before the star forward chose the Clippers.
James said he believed the Lakers would add Leonard to a team that already featured him and Anthony Davis "because I'm a positive guy," admitting he envisioned what that Big Three would look like.
"You ask me was I getting excited about it? I don't get too excited until things actually happen, but I thought we had a chance," James said. "That's all you can ask for. We put ourselves in position to have a chance to get [Leonard]. When he went to the Clippers, I thought that was just as cool. It was great for our league, and he had to do what was best for him. And we all respect that."
James wouldn't offer up much more than that.
"Um, we don't really talk about what happens on my phone," James quipped when asked what he said to Leonard during the recruitment process.
As for what ultimately swayed Leonard to sign with L.A.'s other NBA team?
"Man, how the hell can I answer that? I don't f---ing know," James said with an incredulous grin. "I don't know. I don't know. Ask Kawhi."
Davis was slightly more revelatory, rehashing his role in trying to pry Leonard from the Toronto Raptors, which he first explained to ESPN earlier this month.
"It was fun just to go through it, for me, with a player like Kawhi, trying to recruit him to come here. It was fun," Davis said. "We had one conversation, and I think he came out with a statement, or his uncle or something ... somebody said he don't really like all the recruitment and all that stuff, so I felt like I overstepped my boundaries.
"But it was a fun process. I would do it all over."
Davis said he hasn't communicated with Leonard since their summer dalliance. And like James, he has moved on from what could have been.
"He can do whatever he wants, obviously," Davis said of Leonard. "We thought that we had a chance, but he made a decision and we're going to face him tonight. He's a hell of a player, they've got a great team over there, so it should be fun."
It could be the start of an intense rivalry for Davis and Leonard.
Davis, 26, has one year left on his contract with the Lakers. Leonard, 28, can opt out of his Clippers contract in two seasons. Time will tell if the two of them will put down roots in Los Angeles.
In the meantime, they'll have four nationally televised matchups this season to compete for their home turf.
"It'll be fun," Davis said. "But we have a whole year to clash out and see who is the last one standing."
HOUSTON -- Major League Baseball said in a statement Tuesday that the league will interview relevant parties regarding allegations published Monday night in a Sports Illustrated article.
According to the report by SI's Stephanie Apstein, during the celebration in the Houston Astros' clubhouse after the team's 6-4 win over the New York Yankees in Game 6 of the ALCS on Saturday, assistant general manager Brandon Taubman turned to a group of female reporters -- including one wearing a purple domestic violence awareness bracelet -- and repeatedly yelled, "Thank God we got Osuna! I'm so f---ing glad we got Osuna!"
Last season, Astros closer Roberto Osuna, 24, served a 75-game suspension for violating MLB's domestic violence policy. Osuna, while a member of the Toronto Blue Jays, was charged in May 2018 with domestic assault; the charge was later withdrawn when the woman he is alleged to have assaulted made it clear she would not travel from Mexico to Toronto to testify.
The SI report Monday was corroborated by multiple witnesses present in the clubhouse at the time.
MLB declined to comment directly on the allegations, instead saying in a statement Tuesday, "Domestic violence is extraordinarily serious and everyone in baseball must use care to not engage in any behavior -- whether intentional or not -- that could be construed as minimizing the egregiousness of an act of domestic violence. We became aware of this incident through the Sports Illustrated article. The Astros have disputed Sports Illustrated's characterization of the incident. MLB will interview those involved before commenting further."
In a statement released Monday after the SI report was published, the club claimed the report was "misleading and completely irresponsible," adding, "Our executive was supporting the player during a difficult time. His comments had everything to do about the game situation that just occurred and nothing else -- they were also not directed toward any specific reporters."
On Tuesday, Taubman apologized for his behavior via a statement released by the team but maintained that his comments were misinterpreted.
"This past Saturday, during our clubhouse celebration, I used inappropriate language for which I am deeply sorry and embarrassed," Taubman said. "In retrospect, I realize that my comments were unprofessional and inappropriate. My overexuberance in support of a player has been misinterpreted as a demonstration of a regressive attitude about an important social issue. Those that know me know that I am a progressive and charitable member of the community, and a loving and committed husband and father. I hope that those who do not know me understand that the Sports Illustrated article does not reflect who I am or my values. I am sorry if anyone was offended by my actions."
