Yamaha & Attack Performance Unite In MotoAmerica

Published in Racing
Monday, 21 October 2019 13:13

COSTA MESA, Calif. – Yamaha is partnering with Attack Performance to field a MotoAmerica Superbike team next season featuring four-time and reigning champion Cameron Beaubier and Jake Gagne.

Yamaha Motor Corporation, U.S.A. is following a team structure model used by Yamaha Motor Europe in World Superbike with the announcement of its two-year agreement today with Attack Performance, the Richard Stanboli-owned team fielded bikes for Josh Herrin and J.D. Beach in 2018 and 2019, respectively, in one-rider teams in the MotoAmerica Superbike division.

Along with sponsorship from Monster Energy, the team will receive the full support of both Yamaha Motor Corporation, U.S.A. and Yamaha Motor Europe.

“When we started planning the new direction for our Superbike team, the first company we thought of was Attack Performance,” said Monster Energy Attack Performance Yamaha Racing team manager Tom Halverson in a team release. “They have the skill, desire and passion needed to win. Combining our resources, knowledge and personnel with theirs should make for a super-competitive organization. We will work closely together to make everything gel before the first race so we can start the season off strong. From there, we are confident that the team and riders will only get stronger and be in contention for another MotoAmerica Superbike Championship.

“Of course, having Cameron (Beaubier) back is key, and we are so pleased he has decided to stay in the U.S. and race with us for at least two more seasons. We are also very happy to have Jake Gagne join us as Cameron’s teammate. Jake is a very talented and popular rider, and I’m sure he will take full advantage of this opportunity and be in the hunt right away.

“Lastly, we wish Garrett (Gerloff) all the success he deserves. We will miss him in the paddock and on the track, but we are also very happy he is able to pursue his dreams and race with Yamaha on the world stage.”

It was announced earlier today that Gerloff will be moving to the World Superbike Championship with the GRT Yamaha team.

Beaubier, however, will be back, the 38-time AMA Superbike race winner hoping to earn a fifth MotoAmerica Superbike crown.

“I’m looking toward 2020,” Beaubier said. “There will be some changes within our team, but we will always have the same goal. I’ve been working with my crew chief Rick Hobbs ever since I started racing in Superbike back in 2014, but he is retiring this year. We had an amazing run together, and we are on to a new chapter. I am really excited to be working with Attack Performance. The guys at Yamaha, with the addition of Richard Stanboli’s knowledge, I feel confident that they will build a weapon out of the 2020 R1.”

“Everyone at Attack Performance is very excited to expand our partnership and collaboration with a great company, Yamaha Motor Corporation, U.S.A.,” Stanboli said in the team release. “We have worked with a number of OEMs over the past two decades, and our most recent experience with Yamaha has been nothing but rewarding. The R1 has been a fantastic machine that allowed us, as a private team, to effectively race for the top step of the podium and compete for the championship. In 2020, we will bring to bear everything we have learned, in combination with Yamaha’s wealth of knowledge, to the MotoAmerica Superbike Championship. We will settle for nothing short of the top spot at every single event.

“We are also excited to work with two champions, Cameron Beaubier and Jake Gagne. Cameron is a proven competitor who is a true deal closer. We have all watched him beat the competition with closing-lap charges that are nothing short of amazing. Jake is also a Yamaha champion with a wealth of talent and potential. His best days are right around the corner, and we are eager to help him.”

Gagne, who like Beaubier is 26 years old, raced a Scheibe Racing BMW to eighth in the MotoAmerica Superbike points a season after getting a taste of the World Superbike Championship with the Red Bull Honda team. In addition to his 2015 MotoAmerica Superstock 1000 title, which he won while racing a Yamaha YZF-R1, Gagne was crowned AMA Pro Daytona SportBike Champion in 2014 on a Yamaha YZF-R6.

“I could not be more thrilled to go Yamaha Superbike racing,” Gagne said in the team release. “I want to extend a massive thank you to Keith (McCarty, Motorsports Racing Division Manager for YMUS), Tom (Halverson), Jim (Roach, Technical Division Manager for YMUS) and the entire Yamaha family for their belief and nonstop support. It’s a dream come true to be aboard the championship-winning machine and surrounded by such a huge amount of experience and knowledge. I’ve been fortunate to have had my most successful racing years aboard a Yamaha, so I feel like I’m back at home.

“Also, I’m really looking forward to working with Richard Stanboli at Attack Performance. I’m filled with motivation, and I’m really looking forward to a productive off-season of training and riding. I know the Monster Energy Attack Performance Yamaha Racing team will be a very strong force the next two years, and I’m really looking forward to stepping in alongside my new teammate and reigning champ Cameron Beaubier. I know we will both do our best to bring home wins and move the whole package forward. I’m counting down the days till I get to swing a leg over the R1 and start spinning laps with the team. Thanks again to the entire Monster Energy Attack Performance Yamaha Racing team and all the great sponsors and supporters, as well as MotoAmerica and all the fans who keep us going.”

Hangtown 100 Event Format Revealed

Published in Racing
Monday, 21 October 2019 13:26

PLACERVILLE, Calif. – With the Elk Grove Ford Hangtown 100 fast approaching at Placerville Speedway, event officials have announced the format for the much-anticipated doubleheader Nov. 19-20.

As noted, the Hangtown 100 will feature a Trophy Cup style format that has been slightly modified. The number one theme, however, will be larger than normal inverts and points on the line each time a driver hits the half-mile oval.

On opening night drivers will draw randomly in a draft style format and then get to select which heat race to participate in and what order they will qualify in among that heat race.

The qualifying draft will be available on Facebook Live by visiting the Placerville Speedway page. Drivers will have a 60-second time clock to decide where they want to be placed.

Heat races will feature an invert of eight with the winner and top-two in points transferring to the A-main, with all others heading into three Last Chance Qualifiers.

The top-two finishers in each LCQ will transfer into the 30-lap Pure Crop 1 A-main, which will showcase the top-12 in points inverted.

During the final night there will be no qualifying held, as heat race lineups will be determined by points from night one.

The top 20 in points after heats go to the A-main, positions 21-36 in points go to the B-Main, positions 37-52 in points go to the C-Main, and all others move to the D-Main.

To cap the evening, the 100-lap Royal Truck Body main event will feature 24 cars, with the top-12 in points inverted, followed by the next eight in points lined straight up and then the four B-main transfers.

150 points will be awarded for first place, dropping three points per position thereafter.

The driver with the most total points after the night two A-main will be the overall event points champion. The overall Hangtown 100 points titlist will take home a $12,000 bonus, while the final night’s A-main winner receives $20,000.

“We felt like an event such as the Elk Grove Ford Hangtown 100 deserved a format that separated it from other shows around the country,” said Elk Grove Ford President Matt Wood. “Our format was designed with the fans in mind. Every time a driver hits the track, he or she is earning points.

“Our unique format makes every lap important and every race finish even more important.”

Fins to punish McCain for incident with Bills fans

Miami Dolphins safety Bobby McCain will be disciplined by the team for a verbal confrontation with a 13-year-old boy and for allegedly spitting in the face of another Bills fan following Miami's loss at Buffalo.

Coach Brian Flores said he discussed the incident with McCain on Monday, the day after the Dolphins' 31-21 loss. Flores wouldn't say whether McCain will miss playing time as part of the discipline.

Erie County Sheriff's Office spokesman Scott Zylka confirmed that police are investigating fans' complaints, working with the Bills and the NFL in reviewing stadium security video. The Buffalo News first reported the investigation.

The fan, 28-year-old Dylan Wentland, told The Associated Press he was standing at the ledge overlooking the tunnel when McCain ran up and spit in his face following the game. Wentland said he and McCain exchanged words before the game when McCain twice threatened to spit at a teen, once before pregame warm-ups and a second time while heading out to the field before kickoff.

Wentland told the Buffalo News that McCain's threat to spit on the teen came after the boy shouted to the safety that he was "irrelevant."

The Bills declined to comment. The NFL did not immediately return a message seeking comment.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Spurs' Murray agrees to 4-year, $64M extension

Published in Basketball
Monday, 21 October 2019 14:56

Dejounte Murray has agreed to a four-year, $64 million contract extension with the Spurs, agent Rich Paul told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.

Bonuses can push the deal to $70 million, Paul said.

Murray, 23, is part of the NBA's draft class of 2016 that is eligible to sign rookie extension deals prior to a 6 p.m. ET Monday deadline. The Spurs made him the 29th overall pick that year.

The point guard missed last season after suffering a torn ACL in the preseason but is healthy entering 2019-20. He joins a young backcourt that includes 20-year-old Lonnie Walker, Derrick White and Bryn Forbes.

Murray appeared in 81 games (48 starts) for San Antonio in 2017-18, averaging 8.1 points and 2.9 assists. He became the youngest player in NBA history to make an All-Defensive Team in 2017-18, after recording 97 steals and 31 blocks.

Sabonis agrees to 4-year, $77M deal with Pacers

Domantas Sabonis has agreed to a four-year, $77 million guaranteed extension with the Pacers, his agent, Greg Lawrence, told ESPN.

The deal could be worth $85 million with bonuses, according to Lawrence.

Sabonis, 23, is part of the NBA's draft class of 2016 that is eligible to sign rookie extension deals prior to a 6 p.m. ET Monday deadline. He originally was selected 11th overall by the Magic, then was traded to the Thunder on a draft-night deal, then was sent to the Pacers as part of the Paul George blockbuster in 2017.

Myles Turner signed a similar four-year deal before last season -- meaning the Pacers are locked into this frontcourt for the foreseeable future.

Sabonis is coming off his best NBA season, averaging 14.1 points and 9.3 rebounds for Indiana in 2018-19. He shot 59% from the field, which ranked seventh in the league.

Celtics' Brown agrees to 4-year, $115M extension

Monday, 21 October 2019 14:04

Boston Celtics forward Jaylen Brown has agreed to a four-year, $115 million contract extension, agent Jason Glushon told ESPN.

Brown, 22, is part of the NBA's draft class of 2016 that is eligible to sign rookie extension deals prior to a 6 p.m. ET Monday deadline.

Glushon and Celtics general manager Danny Ainge negotiated most of the deal's details over the weekend in Boston.

This is the first rookie-scale contract extension that Ainge has done since Rajon Rondo in 2009.

"Jaylen has made tremendous strides over the last three years and has become a fantastic player for us on both ends of the court," Ainge said in a statement released by the team. "He's a great person and hard worker who, at 22 years old, can score and defend against the best players in the NBA. Jaylen is a true professional who did a great job accepting his role last season, and he is a major part of our championship goals."

Brown, the No. 3 overall pick out of California, has steadily developed into one of the league's top young forwards. He's averaged 11.2 points in three NBA seasons, including 13.9 in last year's playoffs and 18 points a game in 18 playoff games in the 2017-18 postseason.

Brown was a starter for Team USA in the FIBA World Cup over the summer.

Zion undergoes knee surgery, out 6-8 weeks

Published in Basketball
Monday, 21 October 2019 14:47

Zion Williamson had surgery Monday to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee and is expected to miss six to eight weeks, the New Orleans Pelicans announced.

Coach Alvin Gentry said on Friday that he believed Williamson suffered the knee injury during the Pelicans' preseason game against the San Antonio Spurs last Sunday.

Williamson, the No. 1 overall pick out of Duke, was averaging 23.3 points and 6.5 rebounds while shooting 71.4% in the Pelicans' first four preseason games and averaging 27.3 minutes.

The 6-foot-7, 284-pound Williamson missed time in summer league after he banged his left knee in a collision with another player. After just eight minutes, the Pelicans shut Williamson down for the summer, although they said they were just being overly cautious.

Williamson suffered a mild right knee sprain during his only season at Duke. That injury occurred when his sneaker gave out just seconds into a game against North Carolina. He missed three weeks with the injury before returning in the ACC tournament.

Without Williamson on the floor, the Pelicans will likely turn to another rookie -- albeit a much older one -- to fill his minutes. Nicolo Melli, a 28-year-old Italian player, came to New Orleans this summer after a professional career that started in 2007 overseas.

He has played as Williamson's backup this preseason and has averaged 8.8 points and 6.0 rebounds in 17.0 minutes per game. His rebounding average is second on the team to Williamson's through four preseason games.

ESPN's Andrew Lopez contributed to this report.

Verlander to start Game 2; Greinke for Game 3

Monday, 21 October 2019 13:39

HOUSTON -- Justin Verlander will follow Gerrit Cole and start Game 2 of the World Series for Houston against Washington on Wednesday.

Zack Greinke will start for the Astros on Friday when the Series resumes at Nationals Park.

"Greinke gets to hit. That's going to be fun for him," Astros manager AJ Hinch said Monday.

Greinke has a .225 career batting average with nine homers, including three this season for Arizona before he was traded to Houston on July 31.

Houston plans a bullpen game for Game 4 on Saturday.

Wales have called up Cardiff Blues wing Owen Lane to the World Cup, although he replaces a forward after back-row Josh Navidi was ruled out by injury.

Navidi injured his hamstring during Sunday's 20-19 quarter-final win over France in Oita.

Lane, who can also play at centre, was part of Wales' extended pre-tournament training squad.

The 21-year-old made his Test debut in August's warm-up defeat to Ireland in Cardiff, scoring a try.

Lane's inclusion is expected to be confirmed officially by Wales on Tuesday.

The other option would have been the more experienced Scott Williams, but the Ospreys centre has not long returned to action after hamstring and back problems sidelined him for most of last season.

Coach Warren Gatland confirmed Navidi faced "at least a couple of weeks [out]", ruling him out of Sunday's semi-final against South Africa in Yokohama.

Wales have strong back-row options, including Ross Moriarty who replaced Navidi against France while flankers Aaron Shingler and James Davies also in contention to be named in the match-day squad.

But with several backs carrying knocks, Gatland has opted to strengthen there instead.

"Given we've got six back-rowers and we've got five fit at the moment, we've been a little bit short in numbers in the backs," Gatland said on Monday.

Jonathan Davies was a late withdrawal before the quarter-final with a recurrence of a knee injury, although Wales are hopeful he will be fit to face the Springboks.

Fellow centre Hadleigh Parkes has been playing with a broken bone in his hand, plus a shoulder problem.

Wales' other centre options are Owen Watkin, who partnered Parkes against France, or moving wing George North into the midfield.

They go into Sunday's semi-final hoping to reach the first final in Wales' history.

Wales finished third at the inaugural 1987 tournament and fourth in Gatland's first tournament in charge in 2011.

The Springboks ended Wales' interest at the 2015 event hosted by England.

Navidi is the second Wales player to leave Japan, with lock Cory Hill having departed without playing a game after failing to recover from a leg stress fracture.

Dragons' Hill was replaced by Ospreys' Bradley Davies while another Ospreys lock, Adam Beard, arrived late after recovering from appendicitis.

Valvoline Raceway Under Threat From Rail Project

Published in Racing
Monday, 21 October 2019 10:00

PARRAMATTA, Australia – Valvoline Raceway, one of Australia’s most well-known race tracks, may be in danger thanks to planned expansion of the Sydney Metro transportation system.

Track officials revealed Monday that the land where the track is located is part of a compulsory land acquisition to facilitate a new rail system, which will take passengers from Paramatta into Central Sydney, according to the Sydney Morning Herald.

The news comes after track owner Barry Waldron had begun negotiations with the Sydney Speedway land owners, Crown Lands, about a long-term lease for the facility.

“This is devastating. Absolutely devastating,” said Waldron. “I can’t believe that in all our dealings with the government through Crown Lands in our proposed long-term planning discussions (that) nobody thought to give us even a hint that this could happen.”

Metro Rail’s plans include the compulsory acquisition of 116 properties – 23 residential and 93 commercial businesses.

A large stabling yard and operations center for the single-deck, driverless metro trains will be built at the Clyde and Rosehill Industrial Estate, bounded by James Ruse Drive, the M4 Motorway and Unwin and Shirley Streets.

The Waldron’s current lease for Valvoline Raceway does not run out until June of 2026.

Several campaigns to save the venue have already hit social media, including a change.org petition and campaign with the hashtag #WeAreVR. In addition, track officials are planning a rally at the facility on Oct. 22 at 6 p.m. local time.

A forty-year staple of the Australian racing landscape, Valvoline Raceway is a hub for sprint car and midget racing in the Sydney area, including the Ultimate Sprintcar Championship.
