NBA: No media availability for rest of China trip

Published in Basketball
Friday, 11 October 2019 02:01

SHENZHEN, China -- Saturday's game between the Los Angeles Lakers and Brooklyn Nets is still scheduled to be played to conclude the 2019 China Games. However, the teams involved won't be talking about it.

The Nets' 114-111 victory over the Lakers in Shanghai on Thursday was able to happen only with a stipulation by the Chinese government mandating that no media availability of any kind be held at the game and that NBA commissioner Adam Silver cancel his pregame news conference.

The league is adopting the same temporary policy for Saturday's game in Shenzhen.

"We have decided not to hold media availability for our teams for the remainder of our trip in China," the NBA announced in a statement Friday. "They have been placed into a complicated and unprecedented situation while abroad and we believe it would be unfair to ask them to address these matters in real time."

The league is making this decision independent of Chinese authorities, sources told ESPN.

Both the Nets and Lakers are free to conduct their own media availability, according to a league spokesman. However, this media policy was already discussed with players and representatives from the NBA players' association, according to a league source, so the motivation to operate outside of the league's guidelines is negligible.

Saturday's game will be played approximately 20 miles from Hong Kong, which could cause tensions to rise in relations between the NBA and China considering that Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey's since-deleted tweet supporting Hong Kong protesters sparked the current unrest that exists between the sides.

Rays' Glasnow: Tipped pitches 'pretty obvious'

Published in Baseball
Thursday, 10 October 2019 22:38

HOUSTON -- The Houston Astros jumped on Tampa Bay Rays starter Tyler Glasnow from the outset Thursday in a clinching Game 5 win in their American League Division Series. It was almost as if they knew what was coming.

They might have; at the outset at least, Glasnow appeared to be tipping his pitches.

"I went back and looked, and it was pretty obvious," Glasnow said. "As far as the tips go."

George Springer led off the bottom of the first with a sharp single, a hit that not only started what proved to be the decisive Houston rally but was what teammate Alex Bregman called "one of the biggest hits of our season."

Michael Brantley followed with another single, sending Springer to third. Jose Altuve singled to right, driving in Springer with the game's first run and advancing Brantley to third. Bregman plugged the gap in right-center for a two-run double. Two batters later, Yuli Gurriel capped the rally with an RBI single.

The tally: Five base hits and four runs from the Astros' first six hitters of the game.

"I'm aware that there is speculation about pitch tipping," Rays manager Kevin Cash said. "It's something that we have discussed. It's a little tough to do that, make an adjustment in Game 5 of a division series. But at the end of the day, give the guys the credit that went up to the plate and put the ball in play and hit line drives. I think that's what did us in."

Bregman denied the tipping theory, saying that there are bigger issues to worry about when facing a pitcher with Glasnow's elite stuff.

"No, no, no," Bregman said when asked whether he detected something in Glasnow. "He's as tough to face as anybody; I think if you went around and asked everybody on our team, it was just a team approach today. It was just one at-bat after another.

"The ball that Glasnow throws, that cutter, the four-seam cutter that he throws is unbelievable. His breaking ball goes from your head to your toes quick. So I feel like, with him, you just had to pick a pitch and try to put a pretty good swing on it."

Glasnow settled down after the rough beginning and retired the last six Houston hitters he faced, before giving way to the Rays' deep bullpen. He, too, refused to blame the tipping for his issues early in the game -- mostly.

"I'm not going to say that was the reason why," Glasnow said. "I left some pitches that were there to hit over the middle of the plate. They are really good hitters. They can do things with [those].

"I don't care about how hard how you throw, they are good hitters. I don't know if that is what it was, but when I look back, it was pretty obvious."

'Locked in' ace Cole takes historic run into ALCS

Published in Baseball
Thursday, 10 October 2019 22:24

HOUSTON -- This was exactly the way Astros manager AJ Hinch scripted it.

Houston ace Gerrit Cole dominated the upstart Tampa Bay Rays for the second time during the American League Division Series as the Astros beat the Rays 6-1 at Minute Maid Park on Thursday, winning the best-of-five series 3-2. It was not easy.

"I'm exhausted after this series against Tampa," Hinch said. "We've got high emotions today. We played an incredibly intense game."

No one was more intense than Cole.

He went eight innings, holding the Rays to two hits and one run -- a solo homer by Eric Sogard -- and struck out 10. It continued a historic run by the big right-hander who, along with teammate Justin Verlander, is viewed as a leading contender for this season's AL Cy Young Award.

Cole held the Rays scoreless over 7⅔ innings in a Game 2 Astros win. His 15 strikeouts in that outing were just two shy of Bob Gibson's record for a postseason game. His 25 strikeouts overall in the series broke the record for the division series round, breaking the mark of 22 held by Verlander and Stephen Strasburg. Gibson (27) is the only postseason pitcher to strike out more hitters in consecutive outings.

Basically, Cole just never allowed a momentum-based Rays offense to get started while he was on the hill.

"The frustrating part is Gerrit Cole is on the mound on the other side and the run he's been on is second to none," Rays manager Kevin Cash said. "That presents its own challenges."

Houston moves on to play the New York Yankees in the AL Championship Series. Game 1 is Saturday night at Minute Maid Park.

The Astros jumped on Tampa Bay starter Tyler Glasnow quickly, collecting five hits and four runs from their first six hitters of the game. Jose Altuve drove in the first run with a single to right, followed by a two-run double from Alex Bregman. Yuli Gurriel drove in the fourth run with a single.

That was plenty of offense with Cole on the mound, who departed after striking out Ji-Man Choi with his 107th pitch of the night to end the eighth.

"I was feeling good," Cole said. "I wasn't thinking about going the distance. I was pretty locked in. It was one pitch at a time."

Cole still has not lost a game since May 22, a streak of 24 straight starts without a loss, during which he has gone 18-0 with a 1.66 ERA and 251 strikeouts, including his two playoff outings.

Cole: Astros responded to the Rays' test

Gerrit Cole is elated after the Astros eliminate the Rays in Game 5 and recaps the difficult series.

When Cole retired the Rays in order in the third on a grounder and two fly balls, it marked the first time since Aug. 1 that he had not struck out at least one batter in an inning, a stretch of 73 straight innings. According to Elias Sports Bureau research, it's the longest such streak during the expansion era (since 1961), and second place isn't even close: Pedro Martinez is next on the list with a 40-inning streak in 1999.

"We were tested and responded well," Cole said. "Had to get hit in the face twice. I like the way we answered the bell. Looking forward to the next series."

It was a good thing for Houston that Cole was once again on his game, because after Glasnow's early struggles, the run-stingy Rays locked down the Houston offense, just as they had done for much of the series. Beginning with Glasnow, the Rays set down 13 straight Houston hitters.

The Astros didn't collect another hit until a bloop single from Josh Reddick in the seventh. Houston didn't encounter a Rays reliever it could do damage against until the following inning, when Michael Brantley and Altuve hit back-to-back home runs off Emilio Pagan to provide the final margin.

"The Rays pitching staff was unbelievable to face," Bregman said. "I think the only time the ball looked that small was opening weekend of the year when we faced them. So they were really, really good. It was a really good test."

Still, while Hinch might have liked to see more runs tacked on through the game, the beginning of the contest was what he hoped for. After the Rays got to Houston's starters early in two Tampa Bay wins at Tropicana Field, Hinch called the Rays a "momentum" team. After Game 3, when asked how much of a boost it would be to get a quick lead in Game 4, Hinch said, "Playing with the lead in an elimination game on either side of the elimination is huge."

The Astros ended up playing with the lead for the entire game.

"We feel we are at our best when we got Gerrit Cole on the mound and in control of the game," Hinch said.

Everyone on the Astros, from Cole to AL MVP candidate Bregman to Hinch, went out of their way to congratulate a Rays team that they very much see as equals. Cash said he was understandably proud of his club, which in many respects outplayed the Astros for much of the series. In the end, though, the Astros had Cole and Verlander, and the Rays didn't.

"I think that's fair," Cash said. "That's a lot of it. Yes, that's a lot of it. We caught JV and then Gerrit twice. I mean, elite pitching like that can really quiet good offense. And we have a good offense. They played their part."

After a tough five games, the Astros have a quick turnaround to the next round. The Yankees will arrive on Friday and work out on the field at Minute Maid, several days after wrapping up their three-game sweep of Minnesota in their ALDS series. They are talented and rested, and they've spent the past few days watching the Astros battle Tampa Bay.

Nonetheless, the Astros are where they felt they were headed all along: one series win away from their second AL pennant in three seasons.

"They'll come well prepared," Hinch said. "They're healthy, and it's a quick turnaround. But sometimes I think there's too much gaps in these games. I want to play as many games as fast as we can. When there's any dead time during the playoffs, you get anxious.

"I'll play them tomorrow if they want to play."

Making an impact, top place twice

In the junior boys’ singles initial phase, Paul Szilagi was one of four players to remain unbeaten ahead of the highest ranked player in the group.

Notably, he accounted for Serbia’s Djorde Petrovic, the no.12 seed (6-11, 11-4, 8-11, 11-2, 11-9); a close call for Paul Szilagi, for Croatia’s Filip Borovnjak in addition to Chinese Taipei’s Tsai Li-Yang and Kuo Yu-Liang, life was only marginally less exacting as they toppled a seeded player.

Tsai Li-Yang beat Romania’s Eduard Ionescu, the no.5 seed (4-11, 12-10, 11-7, 12-10), Filip Borovnjak overcame Montenegro’s Filip Radulovic, the no.6 seed (11-8, 11-5, 10-12, 11-7) Similarly, Kuo Yu-Liang prevailed in opposition to Slovakia’s Kamil Pach (11-7, 11-8, 11-7).

Defeats but there was consolation, for all four it was their only defeat; thus second place in the group and progress to the main draw was secured.

Impressive performances

Most impressive efforts, it was the same in the junior girls’ singles event from Evelyn Ungvari, Bianca Mei Rosu and Serbia’s Katarina Gvozdenovic. In the initial stage of play, Evelyn Ungvari beat the Czech Republic’s Martina Novakova, the no.4 seed (11-7, 11-3, 11-8), Bianca Mei Rosu overcame Belgium’s Ana Sow, the no.7 (11-9, 11-6, 6-11, 11-2); Chrysi Fotiadu accounted for Slovakia’s Jana Terezkova, the no.8 seed (11-3, 11-4, 11-8).

Upsets in the group phase of the junior girls’ singles event, there were more; Slovakia the nation to suffer. Adriana llasova, the no.9 seed, lost to Bulgaria’s Ivet Ilieva (10-12, 12-10, 11-9, 11-9); Renata Kacenova, the no.10 seed, experienced defeat at the hands of Romana’s Ioana Singeorzan (11-9, 11-6, 11-5).

Disappointment but similar to their male colleagues who experienced problems, for all it was their only reverse; second place and progress to the main draw was achieved.

Successful day

First place in both age groups, it was the same for Peru’s Carlos Fernandez and Romania’s Andrei Istrate but as anticipated. In the cadet boys’ singles event they commenced play as the respective top two seeds, in the junior boys’ singles, Carlos Fernandez occupied the no.3 seeded spot, Andrei Istrate, the no.7 seeded berth.

A successful day for Carlos Fernandez and Andrei Istrate; in addition in the junior boys’ singles event it was the same for Croatia’s Ivor Ban and Lovro Zovlo as well as for Slovakia’s Filip Delncak, principal names on duty. Likewise, in the junior girls’ singles competition, Serbia’s Radmla Tominjak and Reka Bezeg secured first places as did Italy’s Eliza Armanini.

Upsets

Meanwhile, in the cadet boys’ singles event, notably in addition to Carlos Fernandez, Andrei Istrate and Paul Szilagi it was top spot for Norway’s Martin Frosch and Serbia’s Djorde Petrovic but there were surprises. Sokratis Giannoutos of Greece, the no.8 seed, was beaten by Spain’s Pau Loret (9-11, 8-11, 11-6, 11-2, 11-9), Romania’s Daniel Moldovan suffered at the hands of Sweden’s William Bergenblock (11-7, 11-7, 11-9).

Notably it was the only defeat for Sokratis Giannoutos and Daniel Moldovan; thus runners up spot was secured, more importantly a main draw place.

Surprise first positions; not in the cadet girls’ singles event. Additional to Chrysi Fotiadu, Evelyn Ungvari and Bianca Mei Rosu, it was top spot for Belgium’s Julie Van Hauwaert and Sara Devos as it was for Serbia’s Katarina Gvozdenovic.

SAPULPA, Okla. – With the grounds of the Creek County Speedway saturated by rain Thursday, Friday’s program at the John Christner Trucking Fall Fling presented by James Hodge Ford has been cancelled.

The event will now be a single night affair on Saturday, Oct. 12.

“We got hit with a few hard showers and we are pumping water off the track in anticipation of more in tonight’s forecast. With the rain and cold, we need a day for the grounds to soak up the water to where we can even get into the facility,” stated Creek County Speedway promoter, Steve Hahn.

Saturday Grandstands will open at 3 p.m. The driver’s meeting will be at 3:30 p.m., followed by hot laps at 5 p.m., with racing at 5:40 p.m. (CT).

28 Drivers Earn SCCA Runoffs Poles

Thursday, 10 October 2019 17:23

ALTON, Va. – Three days of qualifying at Virginia Int’l Raceway concluded Thursday evening during the SCCA National Championship Runoffs.

Twenty-eight drivers earned Tire Rack Pole Awards, with each competitor set to lead their respective classes to the green flag over the next three days as nearly 600 competitors attempt to win at the beautiful 18-turn, 3.27-mile circuit.

Tire Rack Pole Award winners each receive a commemorative sign and lapel pin, a certificate of achievement,\ and $500 to spend at Tire Rack.

With nearly 55 entries, Spec Racer Ford Gen3 is one of the two largest race classes this year at the SCCA National Championship Runoffs. Charles Russell Turner held the top qualifying time for the first two days. Brian Schofield stepped up to the plate Thursday and claimed the Tire Rack Pole Award by .172 seconds over Robeson Clay Russell, who was involved in an on-track incident Wednesday.

The largest field of this year’s 56th annual Runoffs is Spec Miata with 60 entries. Todd Buras set a time on Tuesday that nobody could beat the rest of the week, making him the Tire Rack Pole Award winner for the class. Buras grabbed the top spot by .061 seconds over Preston Pardus, and the top seven qualifiers all turned laps in the 2:14 range.

Production classes generated some strong performances over three days of qualifying. Jesse Prather set the fastest time over three days on his way to the E Production Tire Rack Pole Award. In F Production, Eric Prill set a fast lap Tuesday that nobody could beat the rest of the week.

In H Production, Vesa Silegren was the fastest driver after two days of qualifying. By Thursday afternoon it was Steve Sargis who eclipsed Silegren and claimed his second Tire Rack Pole Award in the class.

B-Spec kept things interesting during qualifying with John Phillips claiming the top spot Tuesday, but was unseated Wednesday by Alex Ratcliffe. Then on Thursday it was Frank Schwartz who claimed the Tire Rack Pole Award.

A fantastic fight also developed in American Sedan over three days. Gregory Eaton had the fastest lap to open qualifying. On Wednesday, Daniel Richardson turned a better lap. Thursday saw Eaton come back with a vengeance and put down a lap that earned him the Tire Rack Pole Award, his first in the class.

On Wednesday it was Andrew Whitston who set the fast time in Formula Vee. Nobody could better him Thursday, so Whitston claimed his first Tire Rack Pole Award in the class. Then in Formula F, Tyler O’Connor took his first Tire Rack Pole Award. Formula 500 was ruled all week by Tire Rack Pole Award winner Wiley McMahan.

Defending Formula Enterprises Runoffs champion Mark Snyder gathered up his second Tire Rack Pole Award in the class, but only by .217 seconds over Charles Russell Turner. And the Formula Enterprises 2 Tire Rack Pole Award went to Mark’s brother, Liam Snyder.

The thunderous GT-1 class is one of the fastest at each year’s Runoffs. Tony Ave, in the No. 4 Ave Motorsports Chevrolet Corvette, will lead that class to its start Sunday after claiming his second Tire Rack Pole Award in the class. Five-time GT-2 Tire Rack Pole Award winner Andrew Aquilante will be at the front of his field Saturday after qualifying a full second faster than anyone else. Aquilante also claimed the Touring 1 Tire Rack Pole Award on Thursday.

The GT-3 Runoffs race takes on special significance this year as it is also the final event in the new GT-3 Challenge presented by MPI. Drivers Jeff Dernehl, Stacy Wilson and Rob Warkocki are the three finalists in the running for the GT-3 Challenge Championship. However, it will be Michael Lewis who leads the GT-3 field at the start since he claimed this year’s Tire Rack Pole Award, his sixth in the class.

In Touring 3, defending National Champion Marshall Mast set the pace over three days on his way to the Tire Rack Pole. The Touring 4 class was much closer as the No.186 Flatout Motorsports Subaru BRZ of Nick Leverone held the top spot on Tuesday. Then it was T4 defending Runoffs champion John Heinricy who came to the front and took the Tire Rack Pole Award.

Elivan Goulart and his Lotus Exige had the fastest time after Tuesday’s qualifying in Super Touring Under. Defending class champion Kevin Boehm poured it on Wednesday and Thursday to claim the Tire Rack Pole Award by more than a second. Then in Super Touring Lite, Danny Steyn set a time Tuesday that nobody could best the following two days and earned his second consecutive Tire Rack Pole Award in the class.

Robert Iversen was in control of Prototype 2 all three days and took the pole. The class is close as the top five qualifiers all turned laps in the 1:49 range. In Prototype 1, Todd Slusher grabbed his second Tire Rack Pole Award after holding the top position all week.

SDW NOTES: Friesen Coming From The Back

Published in Racing
Thursday, 10 October 2019 17:50

OSWEGO, N.Y. – Stewart Friesen was hoping to lock himself into the top-six during  qualifying Thursday for the Billy Whittaker Cars 200 at Oswego Speedway, but that’s not what happened.

Friesen, who has to be at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway for Saturday’s NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series, qualified 19th at Oswego Thursday for the annual Super DIRT Week finale and will have to rely on a guaranteed starting spot earned at the mid-summer Albany-Saratoga Speedway Super DIRTcar Series event promoted by Brett Hearn.

When the 200 was run on the Syracuse mile, Alan Johnson won from dead last, so anything is possible, especially with Friesen at the wheel.

– Jimmy Phelps, who turned fast time in 358 modified qualifying, was seventh in the big block standings, missing locked in status for both races by a single position.  Mat Williamson (fifth and third) and Tim Fuller (third and fourth) did make the top six in both divisions.  Williamson, especially, has been on a roll this season and is a good bet in both events.

– Fourth in 358 qualifying went to Dave Marcuccilli, who graduated to the small blocks this year after many seasons dominating the Sportsman division at central New York tracks.  His arch rival in the Sportsman division, Rocky Warner, has garnered more than a dozen modified wins and the Fonda track championship so far in 2019, showing what a valuable training ground the Sportsman division is.

With large fields of relatively equal crate motor cars, the division forces drivers to learn to be smooth and carry their momentum through the turns, in the process preparing those who excel for advancement.

– Some star drivers have a tough row to hoe in Friday night’s qualifiers, which take the first eight drivers who are not already qualified.  Among them are Kenny Tremont Jr., starting 18th in his 358 qualifier and Ryan Watt and Rich Laubach, who go off 14th and 16th, respectively, in their big block qualifier.

– Rains in the last two weeks have made the pit and camping areas at Oswego a challenge, with some haulers and campers in mud up to the axle, though others are high and dry. Either way, enthusiasm is high, as those in wet places expect things to dry out by Sunday, when most will leave. If there is still a problem, a tractor is available to help them get out.

– We’ve seen a lot of things in our years at Super DIRT Week but it was notable that starter Dave Farney worked Thursday’s time trials clad in a T-shirt.  Some years he has on long underwear and a heavy jacket.

– Longtime Oswego track manager/promoter Dick O’Brien felt right at home Thursday, as the track was so black that it looked like asphalt. To the credit of the track crew, it was nearly as smooth. Hot laps and time trials had the left rear on Billy Decker’s pole-winning No. 91 looking a bit tattered, making everyone wonder about longevity in the 200, but as Decker optimistically stated, “The track usually changes three times during the feature and it usually works out.”

– One of New York’s most talented drivers was seen in the backstretch stands watching his brother race. That would be late model star Tim McCreadie, who has nearly won the 200 on a number of occasions, observing younger brother Jordan’s performance in the 358’s.  Neither Tim nor former winner Vic Coffey, longtime teammates in the Sweeteners Plus cars, were in action, though Vic’s son Kyle, an up and coming talent, carried on the team’s tradition of solid Super DIRT Week runs.

– How many other major events have the sponsor as a participant?  Car dealer Billy Whittaker, sponsor of Sunday’s 200, goes off 17th in Friday night’s first big block qualifier.

– Kudos to DIRTcar for running the group time trials in an order based on times in Thursday morning’s practice sessions, starting with the slowest and moving to the big guns last. We can remember when drivers at Syracuse drew for time trial order, with a chosen few putting their hand in the bucket already holding a late number to give them the best surface to run on. Change is not always good, but in this case, it’s more than welcome.

Dickinson Wins Race, De Angelis Claims Porsche Title

Published in Racing
Thursday, 10 October 2019 18:00

BRASELTON, Ga. – A few hours after scoring the first pole position of his Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge USA by Yokohama career, 17-year-old Riley Dickinson went on to take his first career victory in the penultimate round of the season.

Dickinson led from start to finish but had to hold off Roman De Angelis in the No. 79 Kelly-Moss Road and Race Porsche throughout. The youngster from New Braunfels, Texas, beat De Angelis to the line by 1.060 seconds.

“It feels great,” Dickinson said. “I mean, the entire team, we were working so hard pushing for this. It’s pretty cool to get it on the final weekend. We’ll push hard tomorrow and see what we can do.

“In the beginning, I was able to get a little bit of a gap, but lapped traffic still made it interesting. It was good. Roman kept me honest throughout the race.”

The runner-up result for De Angelis was more than enough to give the Canadian the 2019 GT3 Cup Challenge USA championship in the Platinum Cup class for Porsche 911 GT3 Cup cars built between 2017 and 2019. With one race still to come Friday morning, De Angelis holds an insurmountable, 62-point lead over No. 7 Wright Racing Porsche driver Max Root with a maximum of 35 points still available.

It’s the second championship in the matter of a few weeks for De Angelis, who last month wrapped up the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Canada by Yokohama championship.

“It feels good and I think it’ll feel even better tomorrow,” De Angelis said. “Hopefully, I can get another win. I was looking forward to hopefully grabbing one today, but I couldn’t pull it off — good job to Riley. I can’t thank the Racing for Children’s, Medical Properties Trust, Kelly-Moss, Children’s Hospital of Alabama team enough to put their trust in me again to run the car in 2019.

“After a bit of a struggle last year, we were able to one-up it off my good friend, Trenton Estep (the 2018 Platinum Cup champion). I can’t be happier right now. We won the Canadian and American and I think we’re the first one to do that, so I think that’s pretty huge.”

Alan Metni rounded out the Platinum Cup podium with a third-place showing in the No. 99 AM Motorsports/Kelly-Moss Porsche, prevailing in a heated battle for much of the race with Root. Metni also picked up his seventh victory of the season in the Platinum Masters class for drivers 45 years of age and over.

“Both of those are satisfying,” Metni said. “Max did an incredible job. He raced like a gentleman, and I know it had to be frustrating for him because I had an advantage on the brakes [all Platinum Masters cars have antilock braking systems]. But he did a phenomenal job, and I thank him for a great, fun race.”

The win coupled with a 12th-place class finish by Fred Poordad in the No. 20 Wright Motorsports Porsche means that Metni will wrap up his second consecutive Platinum Masters title as soon as he rolls off the starting grid for the race tomorrow morning.

Jeff Mosing finished second in Platinum Masters aboard the No. 68 Topp Racing Porsche, while Bill Smith made it two Topp cars on the podium with a third-place class run in the No. 42 Kung Fu Saloon Porsche.

In the Gold Cup class for Porsche 911 GT3 Cup cars built between 2014 and 2016, Sebastian Carazo claimed his 11th class victory of the season and wrapped up the season championship in the No. 27 NGT Motorsport Porsche. Carazo also has finished on the podium in all 15 races this season and now leads Rob Ferriol by 50 points, 511-461.

“It’s been a great season,” Carazo said. “I’m grateful for everything I’ve learned this year. The team has been with me the entire time. I’m at a loss for words. It’s been a great year.”

Ferriol finished second in Gold Cup the No. 5 Moorespeed Porsche ahead of Curt Swearingin, who finished third in the No. 17 ACI Motorsports Porsche.

Kraft: 'Can pray and hope' for Gronkowski return

Published in Breaking News
Thursday, 10 October 2019 17:33

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- Former New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski has yet to file his retirement papers, team owner Robert Kraft said in a pregame interview Thursday night on NFL Network.

Gronkowski has said he doesn't have plans to return, but Kraft said on the program, "We can pray and hope."

Gronkowski was not at Gillette Stadium on Thursday night for the Patriots' game against the New York Giants, but was on Fox's pregame show in his new role as an analyst. In an official statement Tuesday, Gronkowski said he was excited to "embark" on a new phase of his post-playing career.

He has also worked as an advocate for players to be allowed to use CBD products for pain relief. In an appearance in August, he said of his decision to retire, "I want to be clear to my fans. I needed to recover. I was not in a good place. Football was bringing me down, and I didn't like it. I was losing that joy in life."

In that same appearance, he said he could physically play, but mentally wasn't in a place to do so.

He described himself as "very satisfied with where I am in life now."

Spence in stable condition after Dallas car crash

Unified welterweight world titlist Errol Spence Jr. was in stable condition Thursday evening at a Dallas hospital after being involved in a serious one-car accident.

"Spence is awake and responding and is listed in stable condition," his representatives said in a statement. "He didn't sustain any broken bones or fractures but does have some facial lacerations. He is expected to make a full recovery."

The crash happened just before 3 a.m. Thursday, when Spence's Ferrari crossed a median into oncoming traffic and flipped over several times, ejecting Spence, who wasn't wearing a seatbelt, police said. Spence was taken to a hospital and placed in the intensive care unit.

"He is currently resting with his family by his side," his representatives said. "They want to thank everyone for their prayers and well wishes and are extremely grateful to the Dallas first responders who rushed to the scene to attend to Errol after the accident and the doctors who are taking care of him at the hospital."

Police said they're still investigating the cause of the crash, but they noted the Ferrari was speeding at the time.

Last month, the 2012 U.S. Olympian added the WBC welterweight title to his IBF strap with a thrilling split-decision victory over Shawn Porter in Los Angeles.

With his rangy athleticism and virtuosic skill, Spence, who is 26-0 with 21 knockouts, has attracted fans with a series of crisp victories in recent years. He won the IBF title in 2017 by stopping Kell Brook in England, and he defended it three times, culminating in a one-sided thrashing of undersized Mikey Garcia in March.

Spence, 29, of DeSoto, Texas, a Dallas suburb, emerged victorious from his bout with the veteran brawler Porter (30-3-1), which featured several wild exchanges and had the Staples Center crowd of 16,702 on its feet throughout the 12th round and roaring for both fighters when they embraced after the final bell.

Heading into the fight in which he was a heavy favorite, Spence had a lot of attractive options ahead, including a possible fight with the resurgent Manny Pacquiao and a potential bout with fellow unbeaten champion Terence Crawford after that.

ESPN's Dan Rafael and The Associated Press contributed to this report.
