After on the opening day of play accounting for Russia’s Maria Malanina (11-1, 11-4, 11-4, 7-11, 11-5), she beat Romania’s Bernadette Szocs (12-14, 11-9, 11-7, 11-6, 5-11, 11-8), before on the second day of action securing her place in the main draw by ousting Nadezhda Bogdanova of Belarus (11-7, 11-5, 11-7, 11-5).

Notably, Nadezhda Bogdanova was very much a player in form; in the previous round she had beaten Spain’s Maria Xiao in a thrilling seven games contest decided by the very narrowest of margins (11-5, 6-11, 9-11, 11-8, 5-11, 11-8, 14-12).

Most significant result

Without question the most significant result was the win against Bernadette Szocs, presently named at no.17 on the world rankings and the highest rated player on duty in the qualification tournament.

“I felt no pressure, I could play freely; I felt I had a good chance and I think the important fact was that my backhand was stronger than hers.” Yang Xiaoxin

The backhand is a major strength of Bernadette Szocs; in fact it’s a major strength of virtually all Romanian female players! The key factor, with regards to Yang Xiaoxin, is that she uses long pimpled rubber on the backhand, thus it made life difficult for Bernadette Szocs to establish a fast attacking rhythm to her play.

Similar scenario

Later, against Nadezhda Bogdanova, it was a very similar scenario.

“I enjoyed the match against Nadezhda, she didn’t play that fast, she’s young, she is a promising player.” Yang Xiaoxin

Significantly, it was the second occasion when Yang Xiaoxin had played Nadezhda Bogdanova; they had met at the 2018 Luxembourg Open, Yang Xiaoxin had also prevailed. However, it was the first time she had ever played Bernadette Szocs in an international tournament or any other competition for that matter!

A stranger?

However, is Bernadette Szocs a stranger?

Yang Xiaoxin commenced representing Monaco in 2013, having played for several years in the French League. Later on the ITTF World Tour she won the women’s singles event in Croatia and in 2016 in the Czech Republic; such evidence suggests a main draw place was no surprise.

“I think it was just fate that I eventually played for Monaco; now the aim is to compete in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, I was not eligible to play in Rio. I arrived in France in 2005 and played for Lys Le Cannoy. I played there for five years.”

Experienced gained but note the name of the player with whom during those years, Yang Xiaoxin practised.

“Bernadette Szocs was also a member of the team!” Yang Xiaoxin

Strangers, not all; Yang Xiaoxin was well acclimatised to the style of Bernadette Szocs; the place in the main draw no surprise at all!

Recently, Jörgen Persson has undertaken coaching roles on an ad hoc basis, most notably earlier this year guiding Mattias Falck to the final of the men’s singles event at the Liebherr 2019 World Championships in Budapest.

Jörgen Persson’s new role will focus on preparing the men’s team for the forthcoming 2020 World Championships in Busan and the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

Men’s captain

Peter Blomquist will continue as the men’s captain with overall responsibility for long-term planning; Jörgen Persson’s principal responsibilities will be coaching and player development. Resident in Halmstad on the west coast of Sweden, Jörgen Persson will thus have an extra eye on the players living and training that area.

“I am very proud and honoured over this renewed trust, it is always a big honour to wear the blue and yellow colours no matter if you are a player or coach. I am convinced that my knowledge and experience from my very long career will help our players in many ways. I have acted as a stand-in coach during the spring and summer and my feelings are only positive. It is great fun to be back on the international scene and I feel that the co-operation with both the players and coach Peter Blomquist has worked really well.” Jörgen Persson

Medals at recent tournaments

Positive from Jörgen Persson, it was the same from Mikael Andersson, the High Performance Director for the Swedish Table Tennis Association.

“It would be madness not to use Jörgen with all his knowledge and experience; no matter who is coaching or responsible we are in a really positive trend now with medals on the last five big championships.” Mikael Andersson

Women’s team coach

A new name in the men’s team coaching line-up, it is the same for the women. John Wall, who has been acting coach for the last months will now be hired until the Olympics in 2020.

“Working with the women’s team during the last months have been really fun. Now, I will have more time to work individually with all the players on the journey to Tokyo. It is a great group of women with young hungry players who are working hard to improve.” John Wall.

Significantly John Wall played in the top division of the Swedish League for Eslövs, Sparvagen and Rekord; recently he has been coaching elite level high school players

Ireland v Russia (Thu): Preview, team news and stats

Published in Rugby
Wednesday, 02 October 2019 02:06

Ireland aim to get their World Cup campaign back on track against Russia knowing only a bonus-point win will keep them on track for a quarter-final.

Despite defeat by Japan, Joe Schmidt's side are second in Pool A but Scotland and Samoa are just a point behind.

Schmidt makes 11 changes from last Saturday with fit-again Johnny Sexton captaining Ireland for the first time.

Russia, without a point so far, are captained by Vasily Artemyev, who studied in Dublin as a teenager.

Coach Lyn Jones makes nine changes from the 34-9 defeat by Samoa with six new faces in the pack.

Ireland have comfortably won the two previous meetings between the sides and go into the contest as overwhelming favourites.

Behind an all-Munster front five, Jordi Murphy will make his first appearance of the tournament just five days after landing in the country having been called upon to replace the injured Jack Conan.

Sexton, seen for many years as one of the team's key figures, earns his 86th cap as he partners Leinster team-mate Luke McGrath at half-back.

Kobe conditions could cause handling havoc

With temperatures in Kobe set to reach 28 degrees on Thursday, much of the short build-up to the game has focused around the conditions inside the Misaki Stadium.

England and Scotland have already won at the venue in this tournament, however both games were littered with an unusually high number of handling errors, down in no small part to the intensely humid conditions at the indoor stadium.

Sexton and hooker Niall Scannell have said that although the conditions will undoubtedly be factored into the team's thinking, Ireland will not be deterred from playing their usual game.

Despite last weekend's shock defeat, Schmidt remains confident that Ireland can still be a factor in the closing stages of the tournament.

"I'm still incredibly positive about this group," the New Zealander said.

"They are such a good group of young men that they are determined to make sure we get it right in these next two games.

"Then beyond that, it doesn't matter which team you play in the pool next door to us."

Russia playing for pride

Russia, playing at their second World Cup, have shipped 64 points in their opening two games scoring just one try.

However they did briefly threaten to spoil Japan's opening night party when they took the lead against the hosts, before crumbling in a one-sided second half.

Skipper Artemyev is one of three Russian players to have featured in all six of the country's World Cup matches so far.

The full-back will lead his side out as they look for an improbable first World Cup win against a wounded Ireland, looking to bounce back from their first defeat to a non-Tier One nation in 23 years.

The teams

Ireland: Kearney; Conway, Ringrose, Aki, Earls; Sexton (capt), McGrath; Kilcoyne, Scannell, Ryan, Kleyn, Beirne, Ruddock, O'Mahony, Murphy

Replacements: Cronin, Porter, Furlong, Henderson, Stander, Carty, Carbery, Larmour

Russia: Artemyev; Davydov, Galinovskiy, Golosnitskiy, Simplikevich; Gaisin, Perov; Polivalov, Matveev, Gotovtsev, Garbuzov, Fedotko; Sychev, Gadzhiev, Gresev.

Replacements: Selskii, Morozov, Podrezov, Ostrikov, Elgin, Ianiushkin, Khodin, Ostroushkosday.

What they said

Ireland head coach Joe Schmidt: "We've got some guys who have been very, very keen to be involved,.

"We do need to make sure everyone is ready. It is pretty tough with the six-day turnaround and the five-day turnaround."

Russia coach Lyn Jones: "We are facing probably the toughest challenge that Russian rugby has ever faced.

"The challenge for us is to make sure that we make life as difficult for Ireland and to score as many tries as we can."

Shock Japan defeat can motivate Ireland - Farrell

Published in Rugby
Tuesday, 01 October 2019 23:32

Ireland defence coach Andy Farrell has called on the side to use their shock defeat by Japan as motivation for the rest of their World Cup campaign.

Despite the loss, Ireland will secure a quarter-final spot with bonus-point wins against Russia on Thursday and Samoa on 12 October.

"I think a setback, you can use it in the right manner," said Farrell.

"They're not ideal but if you use them to your advantage they can be powerful."

Just five days after the stunning result in Shizuoka, Ireland have an opportunity to get their campaign back on track at Kobe's indoor Misaki Stadium.

Japan are in pole position in Pool A with nine points from two games, with second-placed Ireland sitting one point ahead of Scotland and Samoa.

Farrell recalls England's 2007 recovery

On Wednesday, Farrell - who will take over as head coach from Joe Schmidt after the tournament - insisted Ireland's World Cup aspirations were not over despite the disappointing loss.

"You can look at the last three World Cups, South Africa losing to Japan (in 2015) and losing in the semi-final 20-18," said the former England assistant coach.

"In 2011, France seemed to be disarray throughout that competition and there's a debate on whether they should have won or not in the final.

"In 2007 I was part of the England squad that got a thrashing off South Africa. There was a bit of turmoil within that camp and they managed to get to the final and (there was) a debatable try that was disallowed."

Earlier this week fly-half Johnny Sexton, who will captain Ireland on Thursday, said the short turnaround is in Ireland's favour as it gives them a chance to reassume control of their campaign quickly.

Since arriving in Kobe on Sunday, players and coaches have been keen to highlight their honest assessment of what went wrong in Japan and the unity of the team.

"After a few days of understanding the reasons why (we lost), we are in good spirits," said Farrell.

"We are back on track and ready to prove a point."

Aki backs Irish to 'step up'

Schmidt has made 11 changes for the Russia game, with Garry Ringrose named to start at outside centre again having played 80 minutes in both of Ireland's opening fixtures.

Bundee Aki returns to join the Leinster man in midfield after being withdrawn in the first half of the opening game against Scotland having failed a head injury assessment.

Given the nature of the last result, there is little Ireland can do against Russia that will restore confidence levels among supporters to the level it was before the Japan match, however Aki is confident the side will move their campaign forward on Thursday.

"What I've noticed about this team (is that) we grow together as a group," he said.

"As a team we always focus on ourselves.

"When the pressure is on and everyone is talking us down, everyone steps up."

Vegas West Series Race Moving To The Bullring

LAS VEGAS – Las Vegas Motor Speedway’s 2020 spring weekend received an overhaul on Wednesday, with the announcement that the ARCA Menards Series West Star Nursery 150 will move from The Dirt Track at Las Vegas to The Bullring at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

The track’s racing lineup will begin on Thursday, Feb. 20, with the Star Nursery 150 at the three-eighths-mile Bullring. The addition of the ARCA event gives LVMS four consecutive days of racing and brings the newly merged series – previously known as the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West – to the property’s short track for the first time since 2012.

“This is a great way to kick off our February 2020 race weekend, and we couldn’t be happier to come together with NASCAR and the ARCA Menards Series West to put this race together,” LVMS President Chris Powell said. “Star Nursery has been a valued partner of ours for many years, and we can’t wait to showcase The Bullring to a national audience with the Star Nursery 150. We’ve had a great 2019 season, and next year’s racing lineup is shaping up to be another record-setter for us.”

The Star Nursery-sponsored K&N Pro Series West race was a popular addition to LVMS’s September race weekend in 2018, when Sheldon Creed emerged victorious at The Dirt Track, and again there in February when Hailie Deegan made her way to victory lane.

The 150-lap Bullring race will be accompanied by a super late model open competition event, as well as features in other divisions.

The Bullring – constructed in 1985 and reconfigured in 2000 – previously hosted K&N Pro Series West races from 2001-03 and in 2011 and 2012.

ARCA Showdown To Conclude At Memphis

MILLINGTON, Tenn. — The ARCA Menards Series and the NASCAR K&N Pro Series will come together on Sept. 26, 2020 at Memphis Int’l Raceway to crown a series champion.

The inaugural season of the ARCA Racing Series Showdown, where drivers from the ARCA Menards Series and NASCAR K&N Pro Series will race against each other in a new and unique race format, will conclude a 10-race championship series at MIR in 2020.

The Memphis 200 will crown the ARCA Racing Series Showdown champion in NASCAR and ARCA’s only visit to the Mid-South.

“We and our race fans in the Mid-South are appreciative for the opportunity to host the Inaugural ARCA Racing Series Showdown championship weekend at Memphis International Raceway,” Memphis Int’l Raceway General Manager Justin Kamm said. “It will be an exciting conclusion to the 10-race showdown as we all see who will be crowned as champion Saturday, Sept. 26, 2020.”

ARCA To Feature Four Championships In 2020

Published in Racing
Wednesday, 02 October 2019 12:05

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – NASCAR and ARCA have announced a new championship format for 2020 that will see the continuation of three historic regional championship series and the coronation of a new fourth champion, all under the ARCA Menards Series banner.

The series provide an integral development step for young drivers who aspire to move up to the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series, NASCAR Xfinity Series or NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series; as well as a professional level for short-track veterans.

They will also provide continuity to three of the longest running high-level regional stock car series in the United States.

The four championships will be:

  • ARCA Menards Series East and ARCA Menards Series West will continue the traditions established by the Busch North Series (founded in 1987) and Pacific Coast Late Model Series/Winston West (1954) and currently competing as the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East and West. The series will feature an annual schedule of six to eight races and crowning of separate regional champions.
  • ARCA Menards Series – The 20-race ARCA Menards Series, founded in 1953, a mix of national-series combination events at venues such as Daytona Int’l Speedway and Charlotte Motor Speedway, as well as short tracks like Madison Int’l Speedway in Wisconsin and the Illinois and DuQuoin State Fairgrounds one-mile dirt tracks.
  • ARCA Racing Series Showdown – Ten races within the larger ARCA Menards Series championship will feature the best of the three series coming together to crown a Showdown champion.

“We cannot be more excited about 2020,” said Brandon Thompson, Managing Director, NASCAR Touring Series. “Both NASCAR and ARCA have worked extremely hard over the last year to provide a rules package and schedule that will serve as the foundation for the preeminent series for racing at this level. It was important for us to move the series forward while creating an environment inclusive for both the current long-term owners and drivers in the series as well as aspiring competitors.”

“What first started as a friendship between Bill France Sr. and John Marcum nearly 70 years ago took a momentous step forward today,” added ARCA President Ron Drager. “The amount of history and tradition these series are bringing together to form four elite championships for drivers is an amazing testament to the strength of this sport.

“We are proud and honored to be able to bring the ARCA sanction to the East and West Series; and we are looking forward to working with the race teams, tracks, media partners, fans, and sponsors that have helped those series achieve their long term success.”

NASCAR also announced if an East, West or current ARCA Menards Series car owner has a car that meets the 2019 rulebook, there will be a rules package that will allow them to compete in 2020.

“We’re pleased that we’re able to extend our racing sponsorships to include the ARCA Menards Series East and ARCA Menards Series West,” said Menards President & CEO John Menard.  “We hope that race fans throughout the country will further enjoy great racing action while also becoming familiar with the Menards brand by shopping at our home improvement stores located in the Midwest or at Menards.com”.

The 2020 ARCA Menards Series will officially begin on Saturday, Feb. 8 at Daytona with the Lucas Oil 200 driven by General Tire. It will mark the 57th annual ARCA visit to Daytona.

The Showdown will take the green flag with ARCA’s inaugural visit to ISM Raceway on March 6 as part of the national series’ event weekend in Phoenix, while the West will kick off the Las Vegas weekend with a return to the Bullring at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

West dates also include traditional events at Irwindale Speedway, Sonoma Raceway and All American Speedway in Roseville, Calif., and will crown its champion at ISM Raceway in November.

The East will race at Five Flags Speedway in Pensacola, Fla., as well as Toledo (Ohio) Speedway, Watkins Glen Int’l, and again be part of New Hampshire Motor Speedway’s annual Full Throttle Fall Weekend.

The East season will culminate with the championship race at Dover Int’l Speedway.

In addition to Daytona and Charlotte, the ARCA Menards Series schedule will include Talladega Superspeedway, Michigan Int’l Speedway, Chicagoland Speedway and Pocono Raceway, and finish the season at Kansas Speedway on Oct. 16.

The Showdown 10-race schedule features Salem Speedway, Lucas Oil Raceway in Indianapolis, Minnesota’s Elko Speedway, Bristol Motor Speedway, Iowa Speedway and World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway, and will crown its first Showdown champion at Memphis Motorsports Park on Sept. 26.

Complete schedules for all four championships will be announced shortly.

Tires: From Bias-Ply To Radials

Published in Racing
Wednesday, 02 October 2019 13:00

Since April 1989, radial tires have been the standard for NASCAR’s top-three racing divisions. Prior to that change in design took place, bias-ply tires were used from the days drivers first entered NASCAR events, offering good side-by-side racing and challenges that had to be overcome.

The terms radial and bias-ply describe the internal construction of a tire. Radial tires came to NASCAR because of improved durability, but also because they were becoming more prominent in the marketplace.

In elementary terms, bias-ply tires were built by placing fabric cords laid at opposing angles to the ply underneath it, creating a crisscross pattern. Most bias-ply tires were four ply, indicating they had four layers of reinforcing fabric cords. For track use, crew chiefs could use “stagger” — the difference in circumference between the left-side tires and the right-side tires — by under inflating the left-side tires and the right-side rubber. Heat also expended them, improving the car’s ability to turn left through fluctuating air pressure.

In 1948, the year NASCAR was founded, Firestone Tire and Rubber Co. provided tires for open-wheel racing and began branching out to NASCAR’s newly formed arena. Two years later, Johnny Mantz won the inaugural Southern 500 at Darlington (S.C.) Raceway on hard-treaded truck tires similar to those used in Indy car racing.

In 1954, Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. entered NASCAR with a plan to build tires for stock car racing. At the time, the majority of the circuit was made up of dirt and asphalt short tracks. Goodyear engineers. set out to create a tire that could withstand the high speeds generated at two relatively new superspeedways — Darlington Raceway, which was built in 1950, and the one-mile Raleigh (N.C.) Speedway that opened in 1952.

By the early 1960s, race tires were becoming wider and were designed to have more tread on the racing surface. The deaths of Jimmy Pardue in 1964 and Billy Wade in ’65 prompted the design of the inner liner, a tire within a tire that guarded against catastrophic blowouts such as the ones that took their lives. Throughout the mid to late 1960s, drivers Buddy Baker and Darel Dieringer bravely ran over objects on the track at high speeds to further enhance tire safety.

A tire controversy before the debut race at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway in September 1969 caused drivers to stage a walkout over safety. Firestone, the manufacturer of the tire, couldn’t made the tire hold up at high speeds. The company left NASCAR altogether in 1974. Its departure left Goodyear as the sole tire provider for the next 12 seasons.

Then, in 1986, a hostile takeover attempt and uncertainty of tire delivery prompted the sanctioning body to open the door to Hoosier Tire Co. While Goodyear employed 350,000 workers around the globe, Hoosier Tire Co., owned by Bob Newton, had only 16 employees in his Indiana stable.

H.A. “Humpy” Wheeler, former president of Charlotte Motor Speedway and a former representative for Firestone, knew the storm was brewing.

“It was reminiscent of the old Goodyear and Firestone days in Cup racing in the 1960s,” Wheeler said. “Then along comes Hoosier. I knew when they came in that tire was going to get real light. Hoosier ran a real soft tire and the softer you get, the faster you go. Goodyear didn’t want to take it that soft. The bias-ply tire was a much more comfortable tire to ride on for race drivers. Obviously, tire companies didn’t want them because they weren’t selling them as much. Both manufacturers got to the point where they were so on the edge their tires became prohibitively dangerous. And the tire companies never want danger.”

Entering Speedweeks at Daytona Int’l Speedway in 1988, Baker, Donnie Allison, Neil Bonnett, Lake Speed, Morgan Shepherd and Rick Wilson were among those using Hoosier tires.
