Cardinals activate Molina (thumb) from IL

Published in Baseball
Tuesday, 11 June 2019 13:43

MIAMI -- St. Louis Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina has been activated from the 10-day injured list, and the team optioned rookie catcher Andrew Knizner to Triple-A Memphis.

The moves were made before Tuesday night's game at Miami.

Molina missed 11 games after being sidelined May 29 with a strained right thumb tendon. At the time of his injury, Molina led all major league catchers in games, innings caught, RBIs and hits.

He collected his 1,900th career hit May 25.

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Strikeouts are up, again, for the 14th consecutive year, but there are potential signs of a subtle shift beginning to take place, evident at the sport's highest levels.

Monday's Freeway Series opener between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Los Angeles Angels wasn't merely a matchup of the game's two best performers this season. It was a reminder of how the best ones -- at the right age, with the right technology -- can continually improve, even when the momentum is so profound in the other direction.

Cody Bellinger and Mike Trout were tied for the major league lead with 4.5 FanGraphs wins above replacement when the week began, but it was their improved strikeout-to-walk ratios that stood out most.

Trout averaged 40 more strikeouts than walks in seven full seasons heading into 2019, but has walked 13 more times than he has struck out this year. Bellinger struck out a combined 144 more times than he walked from 2017 to 2018, but has compiled one more walk than he has strikeouts through the Dodgers' first 67 games of 2019.

The Angels and Dodgers are among the best at this collectively, ranking first and fourth respectively in strikeout percentage. They stand as the two most selective teams in baseball, elite at a simple concept that is exceedingly difficult against this era's pitchers -- ignoring balls and damaging strikes. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts believes the rest of the sport might be starting to catch up, that the pendulum might finally be moving in the other direction.

"It's going to swing back," he said. "I've seen more guys trying to beat the shift with the swing, with the bunt, trying to put the ball in play. Guys are starting to make more of a two-strike adjustment. I think around baseball, managers, hitting coaches are talking more about it. I don't ever see it getting back to where it was before because guys still want to slug. But for me, that's what's going to make the really good players and the elite players remain elite."

Below is a look at how two of the best have made such a difficult enhancement.

Cody Bellinger

The most important numbers: Bellinger has clearly stepped into a different stratosphere this season, and one of the biggest reasons for that stems from his sudden ability to pulverize pitches traveling low and inside. Bellinger is a .438/.600/1.000 hitter on balls thrown in that location, a significant increase from the .220/.418/.380 slash line he posted on those pitches last year. His strikeout rate in that zone was 32.8 percent in 2018. This year, it's down to 20.

How he did it: Scouts have noted that Bellinger is standing closer to the plate, particularly with his back foot, which is giving him better coverage and has played a big part in helping him cut his strikeout rate from 23.9 to 14.1. Brant Brown, the Dodgers' assistant hitting coach, said there was never a conscious effort by Bellinger to move closer to the plate. "I think it was more comfort and where his direction goes with his stride," Brown said.

The question is: How is Bellinger able to do such damage on low-and-in pitches while standing so close to the plate? Bellinger smiled and shrugged. "I don't know, man."

Sustainability: Brown will point to Bellinger's improved two-strike approach as evidence that he can continue to keep the strikeouts down and the walks up. "I think that's the maturation process of the mental process of knowing what their put-away pitches are, where do we think they're going to throw you with two strikes, things of that nature. But also shortening up his swing, aiming to move the ball forward," Brown said. "And I think he's found out, too, even when he's in his two-strike approach and he's trying to either be shorter, or do less, when he still gets the ball on the barrel, there's plenty of power there."

Mike Trout

The most important numbers: With Trout, it's very simple: He's chasing less than ever (swinging at a career-low 16.7 percent of pitches outside of the strike zone) and swinging more efficiently than ever (making contact with a career-high 93.3 percent of pitches within the strike zone). He is famously simple-minded, and when analyzing opposing pitchers, the most important piece of information for Trout is merely which pitches they go to, and in which zones, when they're in trouble.

How he did it: Unlike Bellinger, who moved closer to the plate and reverted back to a swing that more closely resembled that of 2017, Trout hasn't made any noticeable mechanical changes. He credits his improved strikeout-to-walk ratio -- a clearly stated goal heading into 2019 -- to "experience over time, seeing guys more than once." Jeremy Reed, the Angels' new hitting coach, also alluded to a major point of emphasis from the new coaching staff.

"We stress passing the baton, I would say, and getting guys to understand that we can scare them out of the hitting zone and we can make them throw strikes," Reed said. "When guys scuffle in those areas, we remind them. And if there's areas that we need to work on behind the scenes, we do that too to try to get them back in the zone. We try to preach that being in the zone gives us a chance to do damage. Swinging out of the zone can only hurt us."

Sustainability: Angels manager Brad Ausmus offers a reminder that Trout is still only 27, which is an age when hitters can make dramatic improvements. "He's developing," Ausmus said. "You forget how young he is, really. He's been such a good offensive player for all of his years in the big leagues, and I think you forget that he's still learning as a hitter. He's learning what he can and can't hit well. I also think pitchers are a lot more cautious with him than they probably might be in the past."

Austrian world number four Dominic Thiem has offered to play doubles with Serena Williams at Wimbledon to put their French Open dispute behind them.

Thiem had accused Williams of showing "bad personality" after he was asked to relocate a media conference to make way for the 23-time Grand Slam champion.

"Probably it was not Serena's mistake. I find her achievements unbelievable, sensational." he said on Tuesday.

"I would like to make amends with her in Wimbledon or US Open mixed doubles."

Thiem, beaten in the men's French Open final by Rafael Nadal, now believes tournament organisers were to blame for the incident that saw him shunted out of the interview room where he had begun answering questions following his fourth-round win over Uruguay's Pablo Cuevas.

"In retrospect, it was funny that such an organisational mistake happened at a Grand Slam tournament," he added.

"What I do not understand is that it blew up so much."

Williams won the mixed doubles title at Wimbledon in 1998 as a 16-year-old playing alongside Belarus' Max Mirnyi, and teamed up with fellow American Francis Tiafoe in the Hopman Cup in January.

Thiem lost to Nadal in the French Open final for a second successive year last weekend and says he is confident on improving on previous displays at Wimbledon where he has only got beyond the second round once in five visits.

"Wimbledon is special, it is the most prestigious tournament in the world," he added.

"I want to show myself better than last year. At that time I was slightly injured and had to give up in the first round [retiring against Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis]. Now I see good chances to get relatively far."

Thiem will begin his grass-court preparations at the Halle tournament in Germany before Wimbledon starts on 1 July.

Commencing in 1996 in Kitakushu, the inaugural year of the ITTF World Tour, the event has always appeared in the calendar of the International Table Tennis Federation.

In what is now 23 completed editions of the tournament, prior to the success of Mima Ito last year, also in Kitakushu, the only Japanese player ever to have won the women’s singles title is Ai Fukuhara when she prevailed in 2013 in Yokohama.

One fact not in favour of Mima Ito, Japanese players do not have the best record on home soil.

Also, the only players to have retained the title are players who truly merit the award of being regarded as legends. Mima Ito is a fine player but perhaps has a step or two to climb before she can merit such an accolade. The only players to succeed in consecutive years are Olympic and World champions, China’s Wang Nan, always in Kobe, won in three consecutive years starting in 1999; also in Kobe, her colleague, Zhang Yining succeed in 2004, then the following year in Yokohama.

It is a second fact not in favour of Mima Ito.

Now in Sapporo she is the no.7 seed in an entry which is the strongest ever witnessed in the history of the tournament; the Chinese quintet of Ding Ning, Chen Meng, Wang Manyu, Liu Shiwen and Zhu Yuling head the order followed by colleague Kasumi Ishikawa.

Notably, of that selection the only player in a world ranking event that Mima Ito has not beaten is Chen Meng; significantly on the most recent occasions she has played the other Chinese members of the group she has won!

Recently at the Seamaster 2019 ITTF World Tour China Open she beat Ding Ning, last year in the final in Japan she accounted for Wang Manyu; also in 2018 in Sweden she accounted for Liu Shiwen and Zhu Yuling at the Seamaster 2019 ITTF World Tour Swedish Open.

Now of the three facts, is that the one in favour of Mima Ito?

Just one problem, China’s Sun Yingsha, who ended her progress at the recent Liebherr 2019 World Championships and Wang Yidi at the even more recent Seamaster 2019 ITTF World Tour Hong Kong Open, both appear in the qualification tournament.

A severe test lies ahead but if any player has the ability to stave off the prodigious challenge from China, it is Mima Ito; that fact she has proved in the past year.

Agadir, a major opportunity to make a mark

In the junior girls’ singles event, Egypt’s Hend Fathy is the top seed followed by Slovakia’s Ema Labosova, India’s Maushree Patil.

Next in line is Montenegro’s Manushree Patil pursued by Algeria’s Melissa Belache, the Czech Republic’s Martina Novakova and Lebanon’s Jennifer Khayat. The host nation’s Noha Arangay completes the top eight names.

It is a tournament in which to some extent underlines the reasons for the concept of the ITTF World Junior Circuit in 2002; one of the main themes being to give more young players the opportunity to compete on the international stage.

All are players who have yet to secure a place on an ITTF World Junior Circuit girls’ singles podium; the most successful being Hend Fathy and Manushree Patil; both competed earlier this year in Bahrain, both reached the quarter-final round.

Somewhat similarly, in a very strong field in February, Ema Labosova progressed to the third round in the Czech Republic, losing the Germany’s Sophia Klee. Very differently, for Melissa Belache, the Czech Republic’s Martina Novakova and Lebanon’s Jennifer Khayat, it is their first appearance of the year on the ITTF World Junior Circuit.

Undoubtedly, Ema Labosova is a major contender for honours, as are her colleagues in the cadet girls’ singles event; Slovakia fields the top four most prominent names. Laura Vinczeova heads the list followed by colleagues Emma Cincurova, Dominika Wiltschikova and Eliska Stullerova.

Overall a total of 19 girls will compete in Agadir, play commences with the team events; the individual events commence on Friday 14th June.

Wasps have signed winger Zach Kibirige from relegated Newcastle Falcons.

The 24-year-old, who has represented England at Under-20 level, is the club's 11th signing for next season.

Wasps director of rugby Dai Young said bringing in Kibirige was "simply too good an opportunity to miss".

He told the club's website: "Zach has lightning speed and power and has proven himself at the top level so I have no doubt he will add some real firepower to our flanks."

Details of Kibirige's contract have not been disclosed

His arrival at the Ricoh Arena follows the signing of fellow winger Paul Odogwu from Sale Sharks last week.

London Irish sponsor has 'concerns' over Jackson signing

Published in Rugby
Tuesday, 11 June 2019 10:32

A major sponsor is to voice concerns to rugby club London Irish over the signing of former Ulster and Ireland fly-half Paddy Jackson.

Diageo, which owns Guinness and is the team's main sponsor, said his signing was "not consistent with our values".

Jackson was found not guilty of rape last year, but had his contract revoked by the Irish Rugby Football Union (IRFU).

London Irish confirmed they are in "ongoing dialogue" with sponsors.

A spokesman for Diageo said: "We are meeting the club this week to discuss our serious concerns regarding their decision, which is not consistent with our values."

Last month, another sponsor, Cash Converters terminated its contract with London Irish.

A spokesperson later said the company was "committed to the highest possible standards" and there was "a series of reasons" for cancellation.

London Irish said the decision to part ways with Cash Converters was unrelated to the signing of Jackson.

In a statement, London Irish said: "London Irish's management were aware that Diageo would be releasing a statement regarding the meeting scheduled for this week.

"There has been ongoing dialogue with all of our sponsors regarding the Paddy Jackson signing, as part of our continued commitment to work closely with all of our partners."

Text messages

The IRFU's decision to revoke Mr Jackson's contract was linked to social media and text messages revealed in the rape trial last April.

In a statement after the trial, the rugby player said he would "always regret" the events of that night and apologised "unreservedly" for messages he sent in the aftermath.

He is due to join London Irish from Perpignan where he played in the Top14.

His former Ulster coach Les Kiss and Ireland coach Declan Kidney are in charge at the English club.

The player was given his Ireland debut by Declan Kidney in 2013 and went on to win 25 international caps before his high-profile court case.

Following the court case, then Ulster Rugby chief executive Shane Logan said he "could not envisage" him playing for Ulster or Ireland again.

However, IRFU performance director David Nucifora said last June that he would not rule out him playing for Ireland in the future.

WEST ALLIS, Wis. – More than 40 super late model drivers from 11 states will invade The Milwaukee Mile on June 16 for the running of the ARCA Midwest Tour Father’s Day 100.

Champions from across the short track racing scene have filed entries for the Sunday afternoon contest, marking the return of racing to The Milwaukee Mile for the first time in four years.

Four drivers that have garnered eight ARCA Midwest Tour championships will lead the charge for the Midwest Sunday. Two-time ARCA Midwest Tour champion Dan Fredrickson is the only one of the four to have tasted victory at Milwaukee, the 2008 and 2013 Champ won a MARS Series event in West Allis in 2004.

One of the few tracks that four-time champ Ty Majeski has not won on in his home state is The Milwaukee Mile. The all-time Tour win leader with 19 victories is coming off back to back ARCA Menards Series wins at Charlotte Motor Speedway and Pocono Raceway and came up just short of a third win at Michigan Int’l Speedway last weekend, surrendering the lead on the final lap as he ran out of fuel.

The two drivers with the most recent Tour success have been Andrew Morrissey and Dalton Zehr. Morrissey, the 2011 Tour champion, posted two wins last season, including a victory in the 49th annual Oktoberfest Race Weekend at LaCrosse Fairgrounds Speedway. Making his first Midwest Tour start of the season will be reigning champion Zehr. He comes into Milwaukee with three Tour wins to go along with numerous victories throughout the region.

Colorado’s Preston Peltier has thrown his hat into the ring for Sunday as well. The veteran driver visited victory lane in SRL competition at Irwindale Speedway this April. The 2010 PASS champion has five Easter Bunny 150 victories at Hickory Motor Speedway, in addition to big wins at the World Cup 300 and the Challenge Cup at Colorado National.

Another PASS champion that has entered is three-time and defending PASS South champion Matt Craig. Craig has nine PASS wins to his credit in his young career. Reigning ARCA/CRA Super Series champion Josh Brock will be making his first Midwest Tour attempt, while 2016 Southern Super Series champion and 2017 All-American 400 winner Donnie Wilson looks to add another marquee win.

Massachusetts’ Eddie MacDonald has also filed a surprise entry. He has four wins at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, another mile track, two in NASCAR K&N Pro Series East action and two in ACT competition. MacDonald has also notched an Oxford 250 victory and has won at Bristol Motor Speedway, one of his seven NASCAR K&N Pro Series East wins.

Others who have filed entries or are expected to file entries include ARCA Midwest Tour points leader Casey Johnson, Jeff VanOudenhoven, Bobby Kendall, Maxwell Schultz, Paul Shafer Jr., Ricky Baker, Boris Jurkovich, Rick Bickle Jr., Austin Nason, Carson Kvapil, John Beale, Ryan Farrell, Justin Mondiek, Gabe Sommers, Jason Weinkauf and John DeAngelis Jr.

Edwin McCain To Perform Anthem At Darlington

Published in Racing
Tuesday, 11 June 2019 08:38

DARLINGTON, S.C. – Pop music icon and Greenville, S.C., native Edwin McCain will perform the National Anthem for the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series Bojangles’ Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway on Sept. 1.

McCain will perform the anthem for the track’s 70th anniversary of the Bojangles’ Southern 500, which first competed at Darlington Raceway in 1950.

“With South Carolina being my home state, I’m excited to be performing the National Anthem at one of the sport’s biggest races of the year at Darlington Raceway,” McCain said. “I’ve always embraced my South Carolina roots so to perform at my home state’s NASCAR track is an honor.”

Called the “great American romantic” by the New York Times, McCain has built an enviable career over the past 20 years by balancing his massive pop success with the year-round touring schedule of a tireless troubadour.

His hit songs, authentic spirit and surprisingly affable sense of humor keep fans coming back time and time again for nights that feel more like parties with old friends than rock concerts. After recording two of the biggest love songs in the history of pop music and experiencing the success that comes with a television show on Animal Planet (Flipping Ships), McCain now performs upwards of 100 shows annually throughout the U.S. as a solo artist, with his full band or his acoustic trio. Recently, he’s added orchestras to his repertoire, performing with symphonies in select markets where he brings his powerful songs to majestic new heights.

Those enduring love songs (and wedding must-haves) “I’ll Be” and “I Could Not Ask For More” aren’t just for the romantic at heart; “American Idol” and “The Voice” contestants turn to Edwin’s ballads every single year to help them win over judges and fans alike (just ask last season’s AI winner, Nick Fradiani). Even Justin Bieber has been known to belt out “I’ll Be” during his own concerts.

2018 marked the 20th year of the success of “I’ll Be,” which topped the Billboard charts in 1998 and has proven to be a timeless classic over the past two decades.

“We’re excited about having South Carolina’s own Edwin McCain perform our National Anthem for the 70th running of the Bojangles’ Southern 500,” track President Kerry Tharp said. “It’s great to see South Carolina natives like McCain being involved in their home state’s NASCAR events. It means a lot to Darlington Raceway and the sport. Pre-race ceremonies for the Bojangles’ Southern 500 will be a can’t-miss opportunity for fans.”
