Rendon suspended 5 games for fan altercation

Published in Baseball
Monday, 03 April 2023 16:15

Los Angeles Angels third baseman Anthony Rendon has been suspended five games and fined an undisclosed amount following his altercation with an Oakland Athletics fan on Thursday.

Unless Rendon appeals, his suspension will begin on Monday night when the Angels open a road series vs. the Seattle Mariners. If he does appeal, his suspension will be postponed until the case is resolved.

The altercation came after Rendon went hitless in Thursday's Opening Day loss. He left the Angels' dugout on his way to the tunnel leading to the clubhouse when he stopped and confronted a fan sitting near the railing.

In a 12-second video posted on social media, Rendon grabs the fan by the shirt through the guardrails and accuses the fan of calling him a "b----." Rendon continues to challenge the fan as he denies the claim. Rendon then calls the fan a "motherf---er" and takes a swipe, which does not connect, as he lets go of the shirt and proceeds to leave the area.

Rendon said he couldn't comment when asked about the altercation on Saturday.

Former Wimbledon champion Garbine Muguruza says she will take an extended break from tennis until the summer.

The Spanish former world number one has only played four times this year, not appearing at all since January.

The 29-year-old, who has dropped to 132nd in the world, said she will miss the clay and grass-court seasons.

"Spending time with family and friends and it's really been healthy and amazing, so I am going to lengthen this period till summer," Muguruza added.

She reached the top of the rankings in 2017, and was third at the end of 2021, but did not pass the quarter-finals of a tournament last year.

Muguruza won her maiden Grand Slam title at the French Open in 2016 and claimed the Wimbledon title a year later.

Another week, another chance at a game of musical chairs at the top of the Official World Golf Ranking.

The big three — No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, No. 2 Rory McIlroy and No. 3 Jon Rahm — are back in action at the Masters, and the latter two have the chance to usurp the reigning Masters champ if either wins at Augusta National this week.

But they have to win… and get a little help from Scheffler.

According to Twitter's resident OWGR guru, Nosferatu, here’s what needs to happen for either to return to No. 1:

Rory McIlroy

  • Scheffler finishes worse than solo third, or worse than a four-way T-2
  • Regardless of Rahm’s finish

Jon Rahm

  • Scheffler finishes worse than solo fourth, or worse than a four-way T-3, or worse than a seven-way T-2
  • Regardless of McIlroy’s finish

No other finish will get McIlroy or Rahm to the top, and no other player has a shot at the top spot. That being said, here’s where some other top players could move to if they win...

  • To #2… Patrick Cantlay
  • To #4… Max Homa, Cam Smith, Xander Schauffele, and Will Zalatoris
  • To #5… Viktor Hovland, Justin Thomas, Sam Burns, Collin Morikawa, Tony Finau, Cameron Young, Matthew Fitzpatrick, Jordan Spieth
  • To #7… Tyrrell Hatton, Sungjae Im
  • To #8… Tom Kim, Kurt Kitayama, Hideki Matsuyama, Keegan Bradley, Joaquin Niemann
  • To #9… Shane Lowry, Jason Day, Justin Rose, Abrahama Ancer
  • To #10… Tom Hoge, Billy Horschel

Of course, we couldn’t forget the name on everyone’s mind at every Masters: Tiger Woods.

Woods could jump as high as No. 29 if he won his sixth green jacket, defying the odds. If he’s solo fifth or better, he’ll jump into the top 200, and if he’s solo second, he’ll move to No. 67. Not too bad for a guy who can only play a handful of tournaments a year nowadays.

Gaikwad, Conway and Moeen give CSK a happy homecoming

Published in Cricket
Monday, 03 April 2023 11:49

Chennai Super Kings 217 for 7 (Gaikwad 57, Conway 47, Bishnoi 3-28, Wood 3-49) beat Lucknow Super Giants 205 for 7 (Mayers 53, Pooran 32, Moeen 4-26) by 12 runs

A game high on entertainment ended with 35,000 boisterous fans celebrating Chennai Super Kings' and MS Dhoni's grand homecoming in style.

Despite piling up 217, the highest score of the season so far, the Super Kings had threatened to get outmuscled at one stage. Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway had helped Super Kings set a new record for the highest powerplay score at the MA Chidambaram Stadium - 79 for no loss - only for Lucknow Super Giants to better that score by one run.
But Kyle Mayers, who had been responsible for that blazing start, fell in the sixth over to Moeen Ali, Dhoni's trademark 'spin it to win it' mantra took over on a surface where dew - which Super Giants captain KL Rahul had believed would play a part in the chase - hardly had an effect.

The spin duo of Moeen and Mitchell Santner ended up with magical combined figures of 5 for 47 off eight overs to turn the game around. Moeen, who hadn't been called upon to bowl in Super Kings' tournament opener, finished with 4 for 26, with Rahul, Mayers and Marcus Stoinis among his victims.

The Moeen effect covered up for a nightmarish start for the seamers, most notably for Deepak Chahar and Impact Player Tushar Deshpande, who conceded 55 in four wicketless overs between them inside the first 10 overs.

But Deshpande redeemed himself with the key wicket of Nicholas Pooran, who threatened to pull off a coup, with Super Giants needing 62 off 25 balls. That, right there, was the game, which Super Kings closed out to eventually win by 12 runs.

Gaikwad tees off, Conway follows

Gaikwad began the season with a 50-ball 92 in Ahmedabad, and his follow-up was an equally blistering knock high on aesthetic value. This half-century came off 25 balls, as Gaikwad announced himself in his very first outing at Chepauk.

The highlight was the three sixes he hit in K Gowtham's first over, the fifth of the innings. This included a straight hit off the backfoot and an inside-out six over extra cover.

Conway wasn't far behind. He began with crunching off-drives off Avesh Khan and Mark Wood to get into full rhythm, and then unleashed a ferocious slog-sweep off Krunal Pandya. The pair brought up a century opening stand in eight overs with that hit.

Bishnoi makes a grand entry

Ravi Bishnoi had Super Giants heaving a sigh of relief when he struck with his first delivery in the 10th over. Gaikwad was deceived in the air and off the pitch as his slog landed in a backpedalling short third's hand. One brought two when Wood had Conway with a short ball that he miscued to deep square, where Krunal Pandya's athleticism made the catch possible.

Super Kings promoted Shivam Dube to No. 3, ahead of Moeen Ali and Ben Stokes, and he pottered to 5 off 10 before picking up the scoring. He hit Bishnoi for back-to-back sixes in the 14th over, before falling in the same over to a wrong'un while attempting a slog to the short leg-side boundary. Bishnoi would complete a key spell by picking up Moeen in his next over to finish with 3 for 28 off his four overs.

The Dhoni finish

Only twice in his 15-year IPL career has Dhoni hit the first ball of his innings for six; Super Giants have borne the brunt both times. Having come in with six balls left, he slashed Wood over third man for his first six. Then, in a shot somewhat reminiscent of Sachin Tendulkar's pull off Andrew Caddick at Durban at the 2003 World Cup, he got into position and swatted a pull that sailed over deep square leg. He now had the crowd expecting another, but that wasn't to be. When he sliced a catch to deep point, the party was over, but he had helped Super Kings blast their way to 217 for 7.

Moeen slices through LSG after Mayers' blast

Mayers has a touch of Chris Gayle to him. His reach, his ability to pick lengths early and swing through the line brought him massive returns as he went after Super Kings' erratic pacers. Chahar found no swing and Deshpande struggled for accuracy. Super Giants rushed to 73 for 0 in the first five overs. But Super Kings stormed back with three quick wickets from overs six to eight.

Mayers, who brought up a 21-ball half-century, and Rahul holed out to deep midwicket, while Deepak Hooda heaved one to long-on. Moeen and Santner were right in the game and Dhoni was able to exercise the kind of control he loves. Krunal Pandya and Marcus Stoinis continued to attack, but the enormity of the task at hand meant they had to keep taking their chances which eventually led to their downfall.

Deshpande redeems himself

A left-arm spinner to a left-hander is a match-up not quite up Dhoni's alley. But because the pacers had all proved expensive, and Moeen and Santner had bowled out, Dhoni had no option but to go to Ravindra Jadeja in the 15th over. It didn't help that Pooran was in sensational form.

After flat-batting Jadeja for a six over extra-cover, he followed up by reverse-sweeping a dart for a 97-metre six over the point boundary. It brought Super Giants' equation down to 68 off 30. Deshpande, who was then brought on for his second over, delivered a telling blow, getting Pooran caught at long-off in an over that went for just six runs.

That, right there, was the game for the Super Kings.

Auburn's Lee: Kidney issues kept her from meets

Published in Breaking News
Monday, 03 April 2023 13:58

Reigning Olympic all-around gymnastics champion Suni Lee says kidney issues kept her from competing in her final collegiate meets with the Auburn Tigers.

"I have been dealing with a non-gymnastics health related issue involving my kidneys," Lee said in a statement on her social media accounts Monday, providing detail to what she and Auburn previously referred to only as "a non-gymnastics health issue."

Lee missed four meets, including this past weekend's NCAA regionals in Los Angeles, where the Tigers did not qualify to NCAA championships in Fort Worth, Texas. Because Lee did not compete, she is unable to advance to Fort Worth as an individual.

"For my safety, my medical team did not clear me to train and compete over the last few weeks," Lee wrote, adding, "My focus at this time is my health and recovery."

Lee competed for two years with the Tigers after winning the Olympic all-around title in Tokyo, and she said she still plans to pursue a spot on the 2024 Olympic team. "In fact, this experience has sharpened my vision for the future," she wrote.

The 20-year-old announced in November that she would leave Auburn after this season to train for the Olympics. But on March 9, she posted on social media that she would miss her final home meet with a health issue. Auburn fans didn't know it at the time, but they watched Lee compete in her final home meet, where she took the vault title, against Georgia on Feb. 24.

Ex-IU coach Knight battling undisclosed illness

Published in Breaking News
Monday, 03 April 2023 13:58

Former Indiana Hoosiers coach Bob Knight was hospitalized over the weekend with an undisclosed illness, according to an email sent to former Indiana basketball players Friday.

The email asked for prayers and said the former coach hoped to return home soon. He was not listed as a patient on Monday at two hospitals in Bloomington, Indiana, where he lives.

The university did not have an update on Knight's condition Monday.

The 82-year-old Knight won three national championships, 11 Big Ten titles and 662 games at Indiana before being fired in September 2000 after he allegedly grabbed a student by the arm in a hallway. The incident violated a zero-tolerance policy instituted by the university following an investigation into accusations of physical and verbal abuse made by former player Neil Reed, who died of a heart attack in 2012.

Texas Tech hired Knight in 2001, and he stayed there until retiring in 2008 with a then-Division I-record 902 career wins.

Knight was succeeded by his son, Pat, at Texas Tech and moved back to Bloomington in 2019. Then, after vowing never to return to an Indiana University event, he relented on that promise by attending the Hoosiers' game against Purdue in February 2020, joined by dozens of his former players and former Purdue coach Gene Keady.

Braves promote Dodd; LHP will debut on Tuesday

Published in Baseball
Monday, 03 April 2023 13:56

The Atlanta Braves on Monday promoted rookie left-hander Dylan Dodd from the minor leagues, and the highly touted prospect is in line to make his major-league debut this week.

Dodd, who was 12-9 with a 3.36 ERA in the minors last season, will take the place of Atlanta left-handed starter Max Fried, who is nursing a hamstring strain. Dodd is in line to start Tuesday against the St. Louis Cardinals.

In related transactions, the Braves optioned left-hander Jared Shuster to their Triple-A affiliate in Gwinnett, Georgia, and to make room on the 40-man roster for Dodd, 24, Atlanta designated outfielder Jordan Luplow for assignment.

Dodd was told at the end of spring training that his major-league debut was on the horizon, so he's been preparing as such.

"We knew a decision was coming, and really I had no idea what to expect," he told reporters in Florida at the end of spring training. "I'm grateful for what they decided on. I'm super excited, and I can't wait."

The 6-foot-2, 210-pound Dodd played college baseball at Southeast Missouri State. He was selected by the Braves in the third round of the 2021 MLB draft.

Dodd will oppose St. Louis left-hander Steven Matz at Busch Stadium. The Braves opened the season by taking two of three games from the Washington Nationals.

White Sox's Hendriks starts last round of chemo

Published in Baseball
Monday, 03 April 2023 13:56

CHICAGO -- White Sox fans received a surprise gift at the team's home opener Monday when closer Liam Hendriks announced he is undergoing his last round of chemotherapy.

In a video message played on the scoreboard and posted to the team's official Twitter account, Hendriks said, "Happy Opening Day, Sox fans. Just want to let you know I'm starting my last round of chemo today. So, I'll see you guys on the South Side soon."

Hendriks, 34, announced that he was beginning treatment for non-Hodgkin lymphoma on Jan. 8. He missed spring training but as the season approached, a hopeful sign emerged last week when the White Sox decided against placing Hendriks on the 60-day disabled list.

"He is making very good progress," White Sox general manager Rick Hahn told the media late in spring training. "While we don't currently have a specific timeline available to share with you on his potential return, those of you that pay close attention to our roster will notice that we have not placed him on the 60-day IL, and that is on purpose."

Hahn reiterated those comments before the game, saying that while the club was unable to provide a timeline for a return for either Hendriks or injured reliever Garrett Crochet, both were progressing and "aren't on the 60-day IL for a reason."

Hendriks has gone 12-7 over his first two White Sox seasons with 2.66 ERA and 75 saves, second to Kenley Jansen for the most saves in the majors over that time span.

Sarah-Jane Perry says she will be drawing on the memories of her Commonwealth Games bronze medal at Birmingham 2022 when the British Open returns to the nation’s second city on Sunday after an absence of 22 years.

The 32-year-old, who has reclaimed her status as the England No.1 to depose Birmingham 2022 gold medallist Georgina Kennedy, has happy memories from her Commonwealth campaign despite losing to her compatriot in a brutal four game semi-final.

Perry showed resilience and mental fortitude to overturn a 2-0 deficit against Joelle King, the opponent who had defeated her in the final four years previously to claim a five-game encounter 14-12 in the decider, to capture arguably the hardest ever fought bronze medal.

Now with Perry counting down to her opening match against the winner of the Siva Subramaniam versus Chan Sin Yuk encounter next Monday she has no doubt about the difference her home Birmingham crowd can make.

The World No.8 seed said: “Absolutely I think the home crowd can certainly lift you when you are down and help you stay positive when you hear these people get behind you.

“I am not one for looking out at the crowd when I am playing, but you can still catch the feeling of the crowd and even if it’s a split crowd it still gives you a lift.

“You can only dig as deep as you’ve got but I think it helps you find something extra at the bottom of the well where you’ve been many times in training and all of that.

“It was pretty obvious how hard I had to dig at the Commy Games, particularly in the bronze medal match, and I don’t think the crowd could have helped me anymore than they did that day.

“So it will be a fantastic atmosphere for the British and I’m just really looking forward to it.”

Perry was a beaten finalist at her home open back in 2017 when she lost an all-English final to Laura Massaro 11-6 in the fourth in Hull and is still pinching herself at the return of the game’s oldest major to her home city.

The England No.1 said: “It’s incredible we have the British Open back here for the first time in quite a while and staying for three years as well is amazing and that is down to hard work from the PSA but also down to the commitment of the Birmingham City council.

“We didn’t want to lose the momentum on the back of the Commonwealth Games which was incredible for showcasing Birmingham and the West Midlands to huge audiences and a lot of people left the games thinking Birmingham was a helluva lot better than they expected!

“We have a lovely city centre and the investment has really come to fruition. So it is amazing to have the British in Birmingham again.

England’s Sarah-Jane Perry

“That said it will be a bit of a dog-fight with the first couple of rounds all on traditional courts at Edgbaston, which is not an ideal scenario for the tournament, but one that couldn’t be avoided this year.

Positive home vibes

“The positive in this is that it does involve a local club like Edgbaston Priory, which is one of the main clubs in the West Midlands, and it’s nice for it to play a major part in this British and I know they have sold out their days at Edgbaston.”

Perry, who is completing her preparations at coach Rob Owen’s West Warwicks stable this week in the company of Nele Gilis, Katie Malliff, Lucy Beecroft and Millie Tomlinson, admits that it will be a case of ‘where memories are made’ this next week.

She said: “I have incredible memories of the British Open, it is the one Platinum I have made the final of, so I have these memories banked and can really draw on how that felt and how much I want that again.

“So it has those great times for me and I know I will enjoy literally every moment playing in front of my home crowd with lots of people I know from the squash community and just sports fans that live near me and have bought tickets.”

Paying due credit

Perry was also keen to make a shout out to key sponsors who were also great supporters of last year’s Commonwealth Games squash event. She said: “It’s really important for me to thank all the local people who support squash in the West Midlands and there are a couple who have supported me in particular throughout my career personally.

“They massively stepped up to make the court in New Street happen before the Commy Games and are also supporting the British next week.

“Oliver Fincher at Aston and Fincher has selflessly put a lot into squash over the years as have a lot of other people in the Warwickshire scene but for me personally he has helped a lot but also made a lot of this a reality.

“There is also the squash group called ‘Squash United’ which is a collaborative that was founded to ensure squash took advantage of the Commonwealth games and maximise the legacy from it.

“They have also been very supportive, so many thanks to them as well.”

Ulster and Ireland back row Jordi Murphy has announced he will retire from rugby at the end of the season.

The 31-year-old joined Ulster in 2018 after coming through Leinster's academy.

Murphy won three Six Nations titles and scored a famous try in Ireland's first-ever win over New Zealand in 2016.

"I feel that the time is right and together with my family we are looking forward to the next chapter of our lives," Murphy posted on social media.

"To play for my boyhood club Leinster and my current club Ulster are experiences that I will always cherish.

"To represent my country will always be one of the highlights of my life.

"I look forward to contributing as best as I can to the team for the remainder of the season."

Murphy made his Leinster debut in 2011 and won three league titles and the European Cup in 2018, before departing his native province to join Ulster that summer.

He won 30 Ireland caps after making his debut in the 2014 Six Nations and played in the 2015 and 2019 World Cups.

Murphy scored three international tries, the most famous of which came against the All Blacks in Chicago in 2016 as Ireland defeated New Zealand for the first time in their history.
